(00:48):

and her favorite daughter and I have

(01:10):
12 year old daughter to be our producer anyway so welcome to the she room podcast
we're so excited to have you today this is our very first episode of mini and
it's It's Valentine's Day! Yes!
Why don't you tell them a little bit about how we got the name The She Room Podcast?

(01:34):
Okay, I think that's great. Funny story.
I created a room where I wanted to hide from my family and basically have a
room where I can find peace and have a moment to myself.
And I started calling it The She Room over a year ago.
I put a bunch of pink decor in the room,

(01:55):
and yeah so but then the problem is all of my daughters started coming in because
the room needed to be used because she never used it I did use it I made it
so pretty never used it I made it so pretty that I couldn't keep them out of it.
Anyway, then we decided to do a podcast and we were trying to come up with all kinds of names.

(02:21):
Nothing was coming to us. And you can pick it up from here.
We had a few names at first, you know, about three weeks before we started.
My mom was asking me, she was like, think of names.
What is our name going to be? And we tossed around a few ideas,
but nothing was really sticking.
And then we had one podcast name idea.

(02:45):
We were going to be the dream or dream podcast podcast, but the name is taken.
So it came while we were setting up the room and hit like it was just right. It made sense.
Like it was a room called the She Room. So immediately I knew that was the name
because and then we went and we got everything together.

(03:08):
Our social media pages, by the way, go follow us on Instagram.
Instagram the she room podcast yes everywhere
where there's social media we are there the links
will be in the description box make sure
to follow us so we just
love it right we're the she room and you
know where you're just i was thinking about this i haven't even

(03:30):
told you about this yet but i was thinking maybe we
can call those who watch us sheroes you
know how every podcast has followers the
followers shade room they have roomies right
yeah i like the name she rose i think
it's cool and then my little sister of course

(03:51):
she the the producer back there is she
doesn't like anything we come up with she's disgusted right now
she said she didn't approve okay
anyway so what are we talking about today producer what are we talking about
today why don't we celebrate valentine's day why do we why do you think i did

(04:13):
a little research on this because i didn't know for sure so what do you think,
I have no clue, so I'm going to let her take it away. No, I want you to try
to guess. Take one guess. Okay.
A lot of these holidays, typically there would be some type of figurehead or
person it was named after.

(04:36):
Okay. Like, there was, for Christmas, there's St. Nicholas, and then stuff like that.
So I'm thinking there's somebody out there named Valentino or something.
And he has a really good storyline. about some woman he fell madly in love.
And it's always a male figurehead, by the way. It's never a female figurehead.

(04:58):
I think she might have peeked at my notes. I don't know. She might be cheating a little bit.
But anyway, so I got some notes here. Let me pull it up. Okay.
Number one, first of all, no one knows for sure, for 100% certain why we celebrate
Valentine's Day or the history behind it. But I'll tell you some of the things that I found.

(05:19):
So basically, the Catholic Church apparently may have established St.
Valentine's Day to honor two
martyrs who were executed on February 14th by Roman Emperor Claudius II.
So that's, well, that's not romantic at all.

(05:40):
That's not romantic, but at least, you know, they were martyrs.
But wait, it gets better. and here are some
legends and legends rumors so one
of the legends was one of the valentines used to officiate weddings for roman
soldiers and apparently he wasn't allowed to do this so he was doing it in secret

(06:01):
but when he was martyred then he was labeled the proponent of love so that That was one of the legends.
Another one was apparently one of these Valentines, the one of the St.
Valentines, fell in love with one of his students that he was tutoring.
And he started sending her love letters. So that's another legend.

(06:26):
Okay. And that makes sense with like the little Valentine's Day card.
Right. Stuff to pass out in school.
And then the other guy sounds like Cupid.
Right. Right. You're right. And then there was one more.
Yeah, you're right. I didn't even think about that. One more I found and it
talked about the Catholic Church outlawed a pagan ritual.

(06:49):
And instead of having that pagan ritual, they designated St. Valentine's Day.
So I don't really know which one's correct, but, you know, I can see that.
Oh, and then another one I found was a poet started the whole Valentine's Day
thing when he wrote about it in a poem.

(07:10):
So I don't know. But what I do know is apparently people have been sending and
writing love letters for over 500 years.
So, yeah. So basically, I'm right.
Yeah, for the most part. i'm right anyway and
i'm always right so all right so what are you doing for

(07:30):
valentine's day besides going out with me well
y'all i really try to keep my daughters off my dates because they'd be trying
to come on come out and eat with me and stuff like that like it's my day well
since i am happily single i will gladly accept your invitation to go and be blind and And dined.

(07:54):
No, no. I'll tell you what she can do. She can stay home and watch the kids.
Absolutely not. You don't want to be texting her sister. Absolutely not. Yeah, for a fee.
Anyway, so what's our next topic, producer?
Black History Month. As you know, it's February, Black History Month.

(08:15):
And recently, Martin Luther King just had a birthday.
Rest in peace. Yes. And sadly, some news that, you know, we all received is his youngest son.
Yeah, Dexter. Who recently just passed. Dexter, sadly, he had,

(08:36):
apparently he had a lung illness.
So at least he's not in pain any longer. But it's sad that, you know, he wasn't that old.
He was, I believe, in his early 60s. Yeah. Yeah, you know, we just want to send
out love and condolences to his family,
his remaining family, and, you know, appreciation because his kids, you know, also...

(09:03):
Stayed in that realm of Black empowerment. They made a great impact on who we are as a people.
All right. So with that, though, how do you think we have advanced from, you know, Dr.
Martin Luther King Jr., he left this world in 1968.

(09:25):
And a lot of people say that, you know, we've come so far, which I do believe
we've come a long way, but how do you think that's going? Do you think there's
still room for improvement?
Oh, yeah. There's always room for improvement, but especially when we're talking
about racism, and especially in the United States, there's, yeah,

(09:50):
one could say a little bit of room for improvement.
I think, especially when it comes to like pay discrepancies.
I know when I do my research, because I had to do a dissertation on this to get my PhD,
there's such a huge gap in pay between Black workers and white workers.

(10:17):
And I think until we can really close that gap, we're not where we need to be in society.
So I Yeah, you know, that's true. And that's in every tax bracket.
I feel like even the wealthy, we've seen a lot of actors recently,
and a whole plethora of actors have come out saying that, you know,

(10:43):
they weren't paid fairly for the work that they've done,
which have been big, major and pivotal pieces of history.
Pieces of culture, I might say, for Black people especially,
but really anyone who enjoys entertainment.
You know, Monique came out years ago, before there was a movement, it was years ago.

(11:08):
Yeah, she came out boldly and said that, and she wasn't always received well
when she was making that known.
But, you know, I think, like you said, there's still a lot of room across so
many platforms or so many different genres where we need to close that gap.

(11:29):
So, yeah, I agree. We've come a long way, but there's still room to go.
What about schools, though? So because in schools, I mean, you know,
me growing up, I was a lot of well, by the time I got to high school,
I was often one of the only black kids there.

(11:49):
So we didn't get a lot of black history in school.
And the little bit we did get was sometimes embarrassing.
They made black people look like they were inferior, like we were inferior to other races.
Basis so a generation later when
you came through school how was that like for you well I
think it it a lot of it's the same

(12:11):
experience and despite it
being many moons ago in between my experience
but we don't have any moon I think it is a few years but I think it still feels
that way in in school like I
could still vividly remember being one of the only black kids in class and,

(12:35):
when black history month would roll around being embarrassed because I'm like okay people.
Are gonna be looking at me feeling sorry for
me or taking pity on me like like it's
something I should be ashamed of but really it
it was like the whole thing just why is

(12:55):
there just a month right of talking about
black people's and society yeah
that's the only thing they ever talked about slavery and they have maybe one
lesson or a couple lessons on dr king and that's it and harriet what generation
are you generation z all right so tell us about your experience parents, Peyton.

(13:21):
Well, joined by kids three months, we learned absolutely nothing.
Nothing? No, they teach us nothing about black folks.
Absolutely nothing. I know they're teaching you about Dr. King.
Come on. No, they never do that.
They're not even teaching you about Dr. King now?
I don't know. I think I might need to call your school tomorrow.

(13:42):
They better teach you Well, that has been a thing, though.
You know, we've seen states like Florida start to kind of police what schools are allowed to teach.
It's starting to become like a kind of a major thing. Like, it really is.
It's like China erased history a little bit.

(14:05):
It gives me the feel of the Reconstruction era, where after slavery,
Black people made so many advances in the political arena and in voting and gaining power.
But then it was stripped away from them.
And then Jim Crow laws started coming up and things like that.

(14:28):
So it's a really scary thing to me when I started thinking about how they want
to roll back certain programs and certain things that help Black people.
And it puts me in the mind that, hey, if we're not careful, we can experience
that Reconstruction era after that again,

(14:49):
you know, where Black people were really starting to be oppressed.
And I think we really need to be careful of that. We need to learn from our
history. Okay, what's our next topic?
Celebrities that are dating. All right. So everybody recently has been talking

(15:10):
about Taylor Swift and Travis Kelsey.
And if they want to know if they're dating or if they're not dating.
Aren't they obviously dating? She goes to all his football games.
So, she started showing up at his football games, and it was kind of like a

(15:31):
talking point for Black people and white people because his previous girlfriend was Black.
And when he moved on, when they weren't together anymore, he started dating Taylor Swift.
And apparently a lot of the Swifties, I think that's what her fan base is called.

(15:53):
Apparently, a lot of them were harassing. Harassing who? I didn't know anything
about this. This is news to me.
But so what harassing her? How like what would they?
I think they were just like, you know, people can leave nasty comments.
And, you know, basically saying he upgraded when it comes to Taylor Swift.

(16:17):
And, you know, the things that people are going to say.
Well i don't know much about his ex but i guess maybe they were saying because.
She might not be as well known as taylor
swift yeah and i think just because he dated
one black woman doesn't mean that he has to
exclusively date all black women now

(16:40):
well yeah that's true but you know
and not to sound like stereotypical or
anything but he cut he he has this little little swag about him
where he looks like he dates black women
i'm sorry maybe but now that
i see him with taylor i don't see any swag you know
i don't see swag like that maybe it's me maybe it's

(17:02):
me you know i don't have he kind of has the i date black women no he definitely
when he was dating her so do you think maybe he like switched it up when he
started dating taylor because probably he He still has that little, like, lineup, though.
He looks like he goes to a blind barber. I'm just saying.

(17:23):
You know, his ex is a very pretty girl. A very pretty young lady.
By the way, if you are listening to us on the podcast, of course,
you can't see the pictures.
But you are welcome to go and Google Travis Kelsey's ex-girlfriend.
Yes. Okay, so she has a bachelor's degree in broadcast journalism from Pepperdine University.

(17:52):
And so I'm thinking that's probably where, it says she was working for ESPN,
but that's probably how, that probably is how they met.
But to be honest, nobody knew her.
Everybody knows who Taylor Swift is. Yeah.
You know, it's always going to and this always causes more controversy,

(18:15):
controversy between black and white people, I feel like, because now you have
a bunch of white people who are telling Sophie is saying how much he upgraded.
And then you have black people defending him and Nicole.
And I hate when that stuff happens. Everything doesn't have to be a black and

(18:35):
white issue. And doesn't. He could like every flavor. Right.
And, you know, who knows how long this Taylor Swift, Travis Kelsey thing is going to actually last.
Do you actually think it's going to last? Let's ask our producer.
I think there's going to be a breakup sometime.

(18:56):
I don't think there's going to be a breakup song in the next year.
One thing Taylor can do is make those breakup songs. All right.
Moving on. Moving on the topic. Who else is dating?
Let's see. You wanted to talk about Halle Bailey.
Oh, yeah. So Halle Bailey had her little bundle of joy.

(19:19):
And you may have been one of the people who suspected it.
Or you may have believed her claims that she.
Wasn't pregnant she did a decent job
no no she didn't really do a great all that
great of a job i have i i know people who were
calling her out for being pregnant since like probably
like well i guess i'm just slow because

(19:41):
but i didn't really know until right before
she had her baby yeah and then
and then i was reading some comments where they're
like do you see her lips and you
see the like shape of her face she's pregnant do you
see the glow I'm like and I'm
always one of the people who like to

(20:02):
like just sit back and watch because I'm like
really I'm like how do how do people be finding
this stuff like you never had a
baby but for those of us who have actually had a
baby we kind of know the signs a pregnancy
right well but a lot of people were saying

(20:23):
and like they saw it in her face
before yeah your body pictures were even yeah
I know that the face was but then this was
like first couple months and I'm like I don't see anything but then over time
there were pictures being and we'll we'll pop one up so you can see unless you're

(20:43):
on the podcast you'll have to but there there were pictures of her at like award shows.
And just appearances and her stomach.
You could tell that it was poking a little bit, even though she would wear baggy
clothes. Baggy clothes are always a giveaway, though.
Yeah, that's kind of like Rihanna. You know, first of all, it seems like people

(21:05):
always got the rumor that Rihanna's pregnant.
You know, right after she had her second baby, I heard the rumor again.
She's pregnant with a third baby, which I don't believe, by the way.
But who knows? Well, and, you know, as big as a thing as Rihanna being pregnant
was, I feel like it was kind of maybe even a little bit more.

(21:28):
I won't I won't even say more of a big event, but more just unexpected news
that Halle Bailey was because she was the mermaid.
Made well that's one you know people get
that and that and that has a lot to do with it being
tied to disney age right stuff like that

(21:48):
i guess do you think and and a lot
of people might say that she's just starting out
her career even though she's
had a career but like wow career is just
launching and then you know she's young i mean she
you know she had her baby with ddg the
a rapper and a lot of people to be

(22:09):
honest i had to look him up because and the first thing
that it said on there was that he was a youtube creator
i'm like because first of all why did they call themselves
these names like just
like rihanna's baby i don't even know how do you pronounce
that it just seems like a bunch of letters y'all i'm not.
Trying to seem old she's not as up to

(22:31):
date anyway but DDG I am
so you know there was a small little
spat before and and you know it didn't
really come necessarily from DDG
and Halle Bailey but DDG has
an ex-girlfriend I want to say her name's Ruby
Rose maybe I don't know a lot

(22:53):
of I'm not sure don't let me lie to you but one
of his ex-girlfriends apparently there was like just a brief moment of controversy
And people were so quick to come to Halle Bailey's defense and wanted to protect
her and shelter her and did not want him tarnishing her image.

(23:15):
Because she has so many things going for her.
You know, she's an actress, an amazing singer, just a talented young woman.
She's the little mermaid. And she actually is...
Well, from looking at her and observing her, she seems like a genuine, nice, sweet person.

(23:35):
So I think everybody was a little
bit, like, shocked from finding out the news that she did have a baby.
Be and so and because they denied it for basically
the whole pregnancy and then just
dropped a picture of the baby's

(23:56):
like hand well you i gotta tell you a secret but as a secret i kept you as a
you're not pregnant i oh no but when i was pregnant with you this is a true
story i kept up you as a secret until after I had you.
I mean, your grandmother knew, my mom knew, and my dad knew,

(24:17):
people in our immediate family who lived with us.
But as far as all the family outside, even those who were those family members
who would come visit us, they didn't know I was pregnant.
And so after I had the baby, I brought you home and I called your uncle Steve
and I said, I said, hey, y'all can come over and see the new baby.
And they were like, what? Stop playing.

(24:38):
She wasn't hiding me from the world. She was hiding the world from me, guys.
They're young. I'm really hoping that they can make it. And they seem like a nice couple, you know.
I saw the picture of him cuddling with her and the cat. They seem to have a great relationship.
I'm not a cat fan, but.

(24:59):
She's not a cat fan. But much, much, much love, love, love, respect and well wishes.
Yo, we're rooting for you.
We're rooting for you. Come on, young people. Stick to it.
So we have another couple we're going to discuss. And this couple has been getting.

(25:21):
Some focus, too, because of who the male in the couple is and his dating background.
And you guys might be able to guess.
Because he's dated everyone in Hollywood.
Anyone who was single and available, he seems to have been with.
And I have to say this about him, though.

(25:42):
Most of them, I haven't heard them say anything bad about him.
Like he must be one heck of a boyfriend because they all seem to have good things
to say, even though he's dated like 100 women in Hollywood, it seems like none other than common.
But he's down dating Jennifer Hudson. And what are your thoughts on that?

(26:07):
Well, I don't really have too many thoughts on that. They're not.
I'm going to be honest. they're not like young two
of the people that well yeah they are more your age but
they're not old i just i've never really heard or followed up with common or
jennifer hudson and then come to find out you know he has like his his dating

(26:33):
background is a thing that's discussed That's like frequently he's dated Taraji.
He's dated Serena Williams. I know he dated Tiffany Haddish.
He dated Tiffany Haddish. I remember that.
Yeah. So he's dated lots of people. But yeah, so now he's dating Jennifer Hudson.

(26:53):
He's the panel of the show. I will say, even though I don't know much about.
Oh, and on the show is where they confirm their relationship.
Yeah. So it's serious. So it's serious.
But even though I don't know too much about either one of their dating backgrounds,
I will say that I think this relationship could work. Maybe even less.

(27:16):
I don't know. I hope it can work. Now, do you know Coco?
The singer Coco? Oh, yeah, Coco Jones. Coco Jones.
So I was looking on social media the other day, and I have to admit, I got upset.
As a woman in my 40s, the reason why I got upset, Yang, is because they were

(27:38):
trying to say that Jennifer Hudson could be Coco's mother.
Mother i'm like that's not that big of an age gap i don't know maybe big sister
coco jones and jennifer because they claim they they look alike i mean how old
is jennifer hudson she's in her 40s,

(27:58):
but coco jones is in her 20s i mean i know technically she could be her mother
but are they talking about appearance or well age.
I got offended because I'm like, don't be trying to age Jennifer Hudson like
that. She's still in her prime.
I mean, stand up for your crew.

(28:19):
I am going to stand up for them because y'all be trying to make us look older
than what we are. We still look good. She doesn't look old.
Yeah, so that's why I couldn't understand why they were trying to say.
She doesn't look old, but maybe they're strictly speaking on age.
No, they were trying to throw some shade. i'm
telling you they were throwing shade at jennifer and i

(28:40):
have to stand up for my girl i i don't
know i i didn't see that but maybe i'm
thinking like hearing you talk about that right now i'm thinking
maybe because they both are fantastic singers
and they they're both i like both
of them maybe that's what i said maybe it was a compliment it

(29:00):
was not a compliment because a compliment would have been
oh you know Coco and Jennifer look
like they could be sisters that's a compliment and
a shade or throwing salt or
shade or an insult would be oh look at
Jennifer Hudson she could be that girl's mama I don't
think I don't think so I think 40 and up club are a little butthurt right now

(29:24):
all right next topic produced what to do when lonely on valentine's well I'm
never lonely because all y'all always I can't even go to the bathroom without y'all.
Harassing me and even now why is
it that all y'all are always in my
business but I can't be in your business like when you don't want to be bothered

(29:49):
you just won't reply to my texts or phone calls but y'all think y'all can go
through my phone or do whatever you want what are y'all supposed to to do outside of your kids.
This goes back to, like, you're our parent.
Like, what? Okay, we do have a life outside of you. That's what I'm saying.

(30:10):
So, anyway, am I lonely on Valentine's Day? Never, because...
Well, you have a husband.
Well, I have a husband. We have to sneak out to get away from y'all.
What do single people do on Valentine's Day? What should they do?
I think single people on Valentine's Day should not look at others and feel some type of way.

(30:30):
I think the rest of the year, the other 364 days, they're the sane ones.
The sane ones? Because they're not having to deal with another person.
I don't know about sane, but okay. First of all, I was a single mom for several
years, so I did have Valentine's Day alone.
I think you make the holiday whatever you want it to be.

(30:53):
You don't need somebody to have a great time on a holiday. Go out and buy your
own flowers. Buy you some candy. Love on yourself.
Have a self-appreciation day. Pick out a movie. Put on some fluffy socks.
Take you a bath with all the bubbles and relax.
Yeah. Go to sleep feeling like a million bucks.

(31:16):
And don't be sad. I'm validating. And go to sleep knowing nobody's cheating on you.
And you never know when your situation might change, right? Next year,
you might actually be with someone.
Life doesn't always stay the same. There will be changes, but you got to be open to it as well.
But for this year, if you are single and alone, go out and enjoy yourself,

(31:42):
whether it's at home with a movie or what have you. Just enjoy yourself.
Enjoy your best time. Or do what works for you. you go out.
Go be social. You know, you don't always need to go out with somebody. Go be social.
Yeah. Look up a speed dating thing. Do what works for you. Yeah. Do that.
Have fun. Have fun. You know how some people think, well, I'm going to propose

(32:04):
on Valentine's Day or I'm going to schedule my wedding date on Valentine's Day.
What do you feel about that?
I feel like when this guy I tried to propose to me on Valentine's Day.
It was, he got an absolute no.
Well, this is nice to me. I guess he should have had a podcast earlier. I'm just kidding.

(32:26):
I'm just kidding. No, I am kidding. Give us the tea.
I'm just kidding. There is no tea. Share the tea with us. No,
there are some cliche things to do on Valentine's Day. Like.
Like you said, proposing on Valentine's Day, been there, done that.
When I do finally get proposed to, I don't even need fireworks the whole night.

(32:50):
I just need something that makes me feel special.
I mean, if I feel like it's unexpected on Valentine's Day because it's so expected.
Some men say, well, why do you want to celebrate on that day?
It's just another Hallmark holiday. a day.
I show you I love you the rest of the year.
I think men say that because they don't want to spend money.

(33:12):
Yeah. Or they don't want to spend time planning.
Well, let me say, if you're going to have a woman, you're going to spend some
time planning and you're going to spend money.
That just comes along with the ball, you know, with the ball game.
You're going to do that. You got to be careful what you ask for,
because if you ask, say you want a woman, it, that's what you're going to do.

(33:35):
Me personally, anytime I can go out and do some shopping or pamper myself or
whatever, I will take it upon myself to go ahead and do that.
So yeah, I celebrate every holiday and it's simply because it's fun.
That's why I do it. And I feel like, you know, at the end of the day,

(33:57):
people should do what works for them. I could care less either way celebrate
it don't celebrate it you know for me.
It's more of a if I feel like a thing, like, you know, the the major holidays
like Christmas, you know, I celebrate.
I know a lot of people feel in some type of way about holidays and,

(34:19):
you know, depending on religion or whatever, or just like their own personal beliefs.
But I I can get down with the holidays because it is Black History Month.
We wanted to highlight this 16-year-old young lady who I just found out she's a third-grade teacher.

(34:40):
She's the youngest teacher in the United States.
And she graduated from college at Fort Neve. College? Wow.
Yes. She's an amazing young lady. It says she holds a bachelor's degree in early
child development and also earned two associate degrees from Oklahoma City Community

(35:01):
College and Langston University when she was just 14 years old.
It says she also completed two years of national teacher's professional development
training through the Thurgood Marshall Foundation.
I believe, if I'm not mistaken, that she's getting her master's degree this year.
So she's the youngest teacher in the United States, guys. What is her name?

(35:24):
But her name is Shania Muhammad.
We just wanted to shout her out, give her a special shout out.
