God raised up leaders for the Hebrew people who were equipped and empowered for this task through an outpouring or anointing of God’s spirit.  Dr. Schreck talks about the prophet Isaiah and how he foresaw the Messiah, the greatest ruler who would possess the full charisms of leadership: the spirit of wisdom, understanding, counsel, knowledge, fortitude, piety, and fear of the Lord.

(00:00):
Hello, this is Doctor Alan Schreckreturning to our podcast series
on the Holy Spirit.
In my podcastseries, The Spirit and the bride,
and our last podcast host, we looked uponthe work of Rock, the Spirit of God,
anointing certain individuals or groups
with the gift of prophecy.
Today, I'd like to lookat another work of the spirit

(00:23):
that we see in the Old Testament, and that is the work of spirit.
The spirit of God raising up leaders.
Begin with a text from Genesis chapter 41,verse 38,
and it's about, Joseph, you know, the son of Jacob or Israel,
who is brought into slavery and soldby his brothers into slavery in Egypt.

(00:47):
And eventually becomes a leader.
How did he become a leader?
Well, Genesis 4138 says, the Pharaoh says, could we find another like him?
Joseph?
Pharaoh asked his officials, a man
so endowed with the Spirit of God.
So just as the Spirit of Godanoints and raises up prophets,

(01:09):
the same spirit empowers leadersto equip them for service.
In this passage, even the Pharaohof Egypt, who does not believe in or serve
the God of the Hebrews, recognizesthe Spirit of God in the slave.
Joseph, whom Pharaoh, because of this giftof his recognition of the Spirit of God,
he elevates of Josephto the position of leadership.

(01:32):
Second only to his in Egypt.
And then wewe further see, we've already mentioned,
other waysthe spirit has anointed leaders.
When the Hebrew people laterwere enslaved in Egypt.
God raised up Mosesto lead the chosen people out of Egypt
into freedomat the Passover and the Exodus.

(01:53):
And so,
not only was Moses a prophetspeaking the Word of God, but he was also
and, and and blessed by the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of God, to become a leader.
And we also saw in our last podcastthat the Book of Numbers explains
that when the leadership,
the burden of leadershipbecame too much for Moses to bear,

(02:14):
that God took some of the spiritthat was on Moses
and bestowed them on thosebestowed the spirit on the 70 elders.
And as the spirit came to rest upon them, they prophesied.
It's number verse.
Chapter 11, verse 24 and 25.
Of course.
Then at the end of, of Moses's life,a new leader was raised up.

(02:38):
Deuteronomy 34 nine says, Now Joshua,
son of nun, was filledwith the spirit of wisdom.
Since Moses laid his hands on him.
Just noting here, this is an
indication of another waythat the Spirit of God is conferred.
It's not always immediately given directlyfrom God, but Moses, conferred,

(03:00):
it seems the Spirit of God, upon Joshuawhen he laid his hands on him.
And we're going to see thatthat's another way.
The spirit is conferred in the Scripture, both in the old and the New Testaments.
As we go on in the history of Israel, there was also a period of time,
when the people of Israel, the Hebrewpeople, entered into the Promised Land.

(03:24):
At first they did not havethey were not ruled by kings, but
rather, people who were known as judges.
Now, these judges were not like judgeswho presided a court.
They were men and women who, were heroes.
They were called judges because theybrought justice to the tribes of Israel.
In the sense of vindicating their causeagainst their enemies.

(03:46):
And, FatherGeorge Montague, notes a number of these.
And the characteristic of the judges isGod raised them up
by sending the Spirit of Godupon them for leadership.
I like to quote Brother Montague, those leaders whose movement to act for
Israel is explicitly attributed to
the spirit of the Lord are of the out.

(04:09):
A Savior given to the Israelitesand in response to their prayer.
Jephthah, who through,
although born of a harlot, delivered Israel from the ammonites.
Gideon, who defeated the Midianitesin the process, showed that the Lord
can do better with a select remnantthan with an excess of human resources.
So Gideon was had the Spirit of God

(04:31):
rest upon him, and Samsonwhose legendary feats
are attributed to the spirit of the Lord, which first stirs in him.
And then, eventually his bodily strength
is attributed to the Spirit of God restingupon him.
So all of these were inthis could all be found
if you read the Book of Judges, which accounts how the spirit
of the Lord raised up these leaders, and there were women as well.

(04:54):
Even though the work of the judge,Deborah, is not explicitly attributed
to the Spirit of Yahweh, she is called a prophetess.
Inspired by the Lord to prophesy in judgesfour four.
So, the point is that, even
in this sort of interim periodbefore Israel had a king,
it was the Spirit of Godthat raised up judges often

(05:18):
in response to the people's prayerwhen the people fell into disobedience.
They, you know, and and they were sortof seemingly abandoned by God.
They cried out to God,and God would send his spirit
to raise up a judge, to deliver themfrom the various hands of their enemies.
So but then after the periodof the judges,

(05:39):
we see thethe anointing, of kings by the spirit.
Another way that the Spirit of Godis spoken as coming to certain
people was by an anointing,a pouring of oil.
So this pouring of oil becomes a symbolfor the Spirit of God.
For example, the prophet Samuel, pouredfirst of all, oil

(06:01):
on the head of Saul, Israel's first king.
You can read that in one Samuel ten one
and then later upon Davidin one Samuel 1613, then Samuel,
with a horn of oil in hand, anointed himthat David in the midst of his brothers.
And from that day on the spiritof the Lord rushed upon David.

(06:23):
So, these leaders were raised upby the spirit.
Now, might mention here that,of course, Saul,
who was anointedas king, was not faithful to the Lord.
So the Lord, in a sense, withdrew, his the gift of the spirit from him.
In fact, there's an interestingsometimes he did respond to the spirit.

(06:45):
For example, in one Samuel 11 five
it said,The Spirit of God rushed upon him.
Saul. And he became very angry.
Some people say, well, does the spiritbring anger?
But, as we see in that text, he's angrybecause,
one of their enemieshad threatened to gouge out all the, right
eyes of all the Israelitesas, a form of retribution.

(07:07):
And Saul's wrath was kindledby the same spirit of God to deliver, to
rescue, these Israelites from from this,
this man, the harsh of the ammonites.
So there is,the Spirit of God can also stir up
righteous anger as as we'll see laterin the life of our Lord Jesus.
But also

(07:28):
there's, a passagethat sometimes is troubling to people
because it speaks about, Saulbeing having an evil spirit from God.
In one Samuel,chapter 16, verses 14 through 23.
It says in part, when the evil spirit from
God comes over you,he will play and you will feel better.

(07:48):
Well, itbasically says before that an evil spirit
from God is tormenting you.
How would God send an evil spirit?
And, Father Mulligan is.
But, Holy Spirit growthof a biblical tradition explains that.
This was at this timethere was not a developed theology.
And the Israelite in the people of Israel, knowing that God was sovereign, thought

(08:12):
that if there was evil in a person, somehow God is sovereign.
He has dominion over everything.
So if some something of evil was workingin Saul, it must have been from God.
Now, today we would say that, you know, this was God's permissive will.
God does not tempt anyone.
He doesn't send evil spirits.

(08:32):
But at this pointin the history of Israel, they
they they were simply attributingthe fact that Saul was,
was, in a sense, possessed by this evil
spirit is something that somehowGod must be in control of.
Of course, the other part of that is,
the way he's delivered from thisis they sent Jesse.
Jesse of the sons of Jesse of Bethlehem, mainly,

(08:55):
namely, David to play, the the harp.
And it says, whenever the spirit from God sees Saul,
David would take the harp and play, and Saul would be released,
relieved, and feel better, for the evilspirit would leave him.
So, even before David is anointed as king,
you could see that, he is used by God to,to free Saul from this.

(09:20):
You might say sort of a, a possession
now, but let's look at the personof, of of David.
He is, you know, the the great king.
The king, even though he also, sinned against God.
God was merciful.
He did not take his spirit awayfrom David.
In fact, he promised to the prophet Nathanthat the Spirit of God

(09:41):
would remain with Davidbecause he was repentant.
He he acknowledged when he sinned, seriously acknowledged his fault.
So God did not remove his spirit, the spirit of leadership from, from David.
One other thing.
I wanted to talk about whatthe Spirit of God does in the leaders.

(10:01):
And in this,I'd like to turn to the prophet Isaiah
in a very a text familiar to many of us.
Isaiah chapter 11, verses one and two.
It's a messianic prophecy.
About the the work of the spirit in well,
in the Messiah who is being foretold here.
And to quote Isaiah 11 one and two, there shall come forth a shoot

(10:24):
from the stump of Jessethat's a descendant of Jesse David's
father, and a branch from his rootsshall bear fruit.
And the spirit of the Lord shall restupon him.
The spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and of might
or fortitude, the spirit of knowledgeand fear of the Lord.

(10:46):
And his delightshall be in the fear of the Lord.
And of course, from this comes,in the translations, even though the word
fear of the Lord was mentioned twice, later translations would would, translate.
The last one is piety.
So here we have what we would callthe sevenfold gift of the spirit
wisdom, understanding, counsel, knowledge,

(11:08):
fortitude, piety, and fear of the Lord.
Now, later, we'll talk more about thisas this came
to be understoodin the Christian tradition.
But FatherRonnie are kind of amazing in his book.
Come, creator spirit, makes an interesting observation.
He he says to quote him on his book, pageone 676

(11:30):
present day exitJesus is unanimous in seeing this text.
Isaiah 11 one and two, as listingthe charisms that would characterize
the ideal sovereign, the Messiah who is to come.
Wisdom and understandingindicate shrewdness and skill.
Counsel and fortitude indicate prudencein governing and military valor.

(11:52):
Knowledge and fear of the Lordindicated a right religious attitude
based on the knowledgeand veneration of God.
That the sovereign, the king, would spread around him.
The presence of all these gifts inthe ruler would ensure a kingdom
where right would triumph, and the poorwould be treated with justice.
These are messianic charisms.

(12:14):
And so Father Kalamazoo goes on and say,the gifts listed here, therefore,
are in the line of the charismsthat bring about the ability to carry out
specific tasks for the goodof the community, as, for example,
to build and embellish the templewhich Solomon did, to win battles,
to see that justice is equitably doneto all and to prophesy.

(12:34):
They are not principally intendedfor the individual
good of the one who receives themfor his personal sanctification.
These are given rather for the directbenefit of the entire people.
And so given, in fact, to all of themcollectively.
So, an interesting point hereis the Holy Spirit
when he raises up leaders throughwhatever means through an anointing.

(12:57):
And especially upon the Messiah, who will be the great King.
He is able to govern the people byreceiving these gifts of the Holy Spirit.
We would call them later or later. Really?
Father Carl Mason is arguing. These are charisms.
These are are gifts of the spiritgiven to the king

(13:17):
and ultimately fully to the Messiahin order to rule justly and rightly
so, the Spirit of God is raising upleaders and equipping them.
Every society, every people, needsleaders, leaders with wisdom
and even the ability to speak and leadprophetically according to God's will.

(13:39):
In the Catholic tradition, every person is anointed
with holy oil, chrism at baptismand confirmation by which the Holy Spirit
comes to us to prepare for whatevertask God has ordained for them, for us.
Priests in their ordination are anointedwith chrism on their hands, a sign
that the Spirit of God Himselfanoints them with his power and wisdom

(14:02):
to serve and lead God's people, the church.
So to close, I would ask, are we awareof the anointing we have received?
We have received in baptismand confirmation?
Do we call upon the Holy Spirit to awakenand renew this grace in us?
And do we pray for our leaders, bothin the church and in the civil society,

(14:24):
that the Spirit of Godmay give them those gifts to guide
and strengthen them, to do God's will?
Sometimes I think we Catholics believethat the really,
really powerfulor important action of the Holy Spirit
is reservedonly for those who are ordained.
Sacrament only.
But remember when Moses said, no,when the spirit fell upon

(14:45):
the other elders, he said, would would theare you jealous for my sake?
Would that the Lord might bestowhis spirit on all of them?
Numbers 1129 and of course, this whole business of Moses
was fulfilled at the day of Pentecost, when all of the church of Jesus Christ
is anointed by the Holy Spiritto be a prophetic people.

(15:08):
The Spirit of God has come to all of usas Christ's gifts.
So do you see yourself as anointed
by God for whatever he calls you to do?
Well, let us pray.
Lord, you have given me your Holy Spirit
in baptism, confirmation, and the other sacraments.
We we

(15:29):
pray that the Holy Spirit will make uswilling instruments to do your will and
to fulfill our mission here in this worldto bring about the Kingdom of God.
Let us pray.
Come, Holy Spirit,
fill the hearts of your faithfuland kindle in them the fire of your love.
Send forth your spirit, and they shall be created,
and you shall renew the face of the earth.

(15:51):
Oh God, who
by the light of the Holy Spiritand instruct the hearts of your faithful.
Grant that by that same Holy Spiritwe may be truly wise
and ever rejoice in his consolationsthrough Christ our Lord.
Amen. Join us again.
And our next podcast.
We'll continue to speakabout the work of the Holy Spirit.
The Spirit of God,as revealed in the Old Testament.

(16:15):
God bless you.
