(00:10):
This is Doctor Alan Schreck.
Thank you for joining us once againto this podcast series on the Holy Spirit.
We're looking at the Holy Spiritin the old Testament.
And in this podcast.
I'm going to look at one particular genreof literature in the Old Testament,
which was in the latterpart of the Old Testament period,
where it seems like the prophetic writingswere beginning to decline,
(00:35):
and replacing them and coming into greaterprominence were writings
about the law of about the last thingscalled apocalyptic literature,
and also wisdom writings, writings about wisdom.
So that's what I'd like to look at today.
We're going to we all need wisdom.
And you might say, what's common to all these
(00:58):
writings of the Old Testamentthat are called the wisdom literature?
They contain many insightsand what we might call pearls of wisdom
and of course, our topic hereis on the Holy Spirit.
So we're going to see how our wisdom
and the spirit rock are intertwinedin the Old Testament.
(01:18):
Now it's inespecially in this wisdom literature.
So, we're we're going to see it'snot always, like a clear delineation.
Here's spirit and here's wisdom.
And that's part of the, the beauty
and also the challengeof interpreting this literature.
But let's take some examples.
So if we ask we might ask the question, what is wisdom.
(01:39):
Well, first of all, we know thatwisdom is an attribute of God.
God is always a second thing we know isthat wisdom is a gift of God.
And we've seen this in our otherdiscussions of the Old Testament,
for example, that, messianic prophecy and,
Isaiah 11 two and three where it says,
(02:00):
The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon me,the spirit of wisdom
and understanding, and it goes throughthe sevenfold gift of the spirit.
So the spirit gives wisdom, wisdom as a gift of God.
And on the side of the spirit of the Lordrests upon him a spirit
of wisdom and understanding.
(02:20):
But the spirit is really
part and is part of the lifeof every person.
Turning to the oldest book of,writings of the wisdom literature,
the Book of Proverbs in Proverbs, chapter 20, verse 27.
It says, the lamp, a lamp from the Lord
is the breath, the net of man.
(02:43):
It searchesthrough his all his inmost being.
Many of you might be remindedof that other text of Scripture.
Your word is a lamp to my feetand a light to my path.
But here the lamp fromthe Lord is Ruach or Nashoba.
In this case, the breath of Godsearches our inmost being.
(03:04):
So there's a little pearl of wisdomfrom Proverbs.
Another thing we see in, chapter16 of Proverbs is a text
which is very practical about discerning
what is how we areled by the Spirit of God.
And so I'll read this, Proverbs16 one through three and nine
(03:26):
men make may make plans in his heart,
but what the tongue utters is fromthe Lord.
All the ways of a manmay be pure in his own eyes,
but it is the Lord who proves the spirit.
So it's almost like the discernmentof spirits.
The Lord testing the spiritsthat are in men.
And that goes on.
Entrust your works to the Lord, and your plans will succeed in his mind.
(03:51):
The man plans his course, but the Lord directs his steps.
Well that's wisdom.
Yeah, we can make our own plans, but.
And we do.
But it's really, Through discerningthe spirit, God will will lead us
if we seek to follow the guidanceof not just human wisdom,
but divine wisdomthat comes from the Holy Spirit.
(04:14):
Moving on to another, of the wisdom books.
The Book of Job is,sometimes considered a wisdom, book.
And, in the passage in
job, chapter 32, verse six and following,
it's a statement from one of the consolerof Jove named Elihu, who is a young man.
And at first he says,he holds back from giving his advice
(04:37):
as consolation to job because he's young.
And then he says, days should speak.
I thought, in many years teach wisdom.
So that's why
he didn't speak out right away, because he let the elders speak first,
but then he goes on.
But it is a spirit in man, the breath ofthe Almighty that gives him understanding.
(04:59):
It is not those of many days who are wise, nor the aged, who understand the right
though.
Therefore I say, hearken to meled me to set forth my knowledge.
So Elihu is pointing outa very important truth that, yes,
experience teaches us wisdom.
But really, as it as he says it,it is a spirit
(05:21):
in man, the breath of the Almightythat gives him understanding.
So in all of these texts,we see that, wisdom
is, a gift of the, the Holy Spirit. And,
an attribute of the working of the spirit.
I'd like to turn to,the Book of Ecclesiastics,
what now commonly calledcrack, the Book of Ciroc and Syriac 39.
(05:47):
And the first 11 verses talk
about how one might attain wisdom.
And basically it's it,Sarah talks about those,
wise people who are studying the law.
He it says in 39 one,he explores this person, explores
the wisdom of men of old,and occupies himself with prophecies.
(06:09):
He treasures the discourses of famous men.
His care is to seek the Lord is maker,to petition the Most High.
To open his lips in prayer.
To ask pardon for his sins.
Then, if it pleases the Lord Almighty,
he will be filledwith the spirit of understanding.
He will pour forth his words of wisdomand in prayer.
(06:31):
Give thanks to the Lord, who will direct his knowledge
and his counselas he meditates on his mysteries.
So basically, Sarah is saying that,
the one way to attainwisdom is by studying the law.
But even the study doesn'tbring one to wisdom.
It says if it pleases the Lord Almighty,he will be filled
(06:52):
with the spirit of understanding, and he will pour forth words of wisdom.
So again, spirit and wisdomare integral on in this text.
Now I'd like to turn to,what we might say is the climactic,
revelation of wisdomas related to the Holy Spirit
in the Book of Wisdom, the so-called wisdom of Solomon.
(07:14):
Even though this is attributed to Solomon,it was a work written
probably in the latefirst middle of the first century BC.
It was written in Greek, possibly in Alexandria, but, this, this.
So this is closeto the time of the Lord's.
Jesus is coming into the worldand one of the few things that we can see,
(07:36):
in this, in this beautiful writing
about the relationship of wisdomin the spirit.
I'd read from the first chapterof the Book of Wisdom.
The whole section is chapterone, verses one through 15.
But I'll start with verse four, because into a soul that plots evil,
(07:56):
wisdom enters not, nor dwells in a bodyunder the dead of sin.
For the Holy Spirit of Discipline flees
the seed and withdrawsfrom senseless counsels.
And when injustice occurs, it is rebuked.
For wisdom is a kindly spirit.
Yet she acquits not the blasphemerof his guilty lips,
(08:19):
because God is the witnessof his inmost self, and a sure
observer of his heartand listener to his tongue.
So, here we have that one verse.
For wisdom is a kindly spirit, literally, that is translated.
Wisdom is a spirit who loves man,
but out of an expression of God'slove for persons, for humanity.
(08:41):
He doesn't let sin just go by.
He is. He talks here about in verse five,
the Holy Spirit of disciplinethat flees the.
So obviously, folly and evil are the opposite of wisdom.
And it's the work of the spiritwho loves the human race to reveal the sin
(09:02):
and toso that something can turn from sin.
Now that's one function of the spirit.
But also in verse seven of, wisdom chapterone, it says, For the Spirit of the Lord
fills the whole world, is all embracingand knows what man says.
So there's another dimensionis the spirit, flees from the lives
(09:25):
of those who are wicked and deceitful, butthe spirit still fills the whole world.
That's also seen in the Book of Wisdom, chapter 11,
verses 26 through 12 one.
Which reads, but you spare all thingsbecause they are yours.
Oh, Lord, and lover of souls, for your imperishable
spirit is in all things.
(09:47):
So, part of what we learned in the wisdomliterature
is that the spirit pervades everything.
And yet in a person,he will flee from those
who did not liverighteously in an upright life.
And yet one who,as we've seen in, other reading there,
if you study God's law and seek him out,
(10:08):
a spirit of understandingwill be given to him.
Now, I'd like to to proceedto one final major
beautiful text from the Book of Wisdom.
And this is I actually,it's in wisdom, chapter seven, verses 20
through the end of the chapter
and beginning in and ending in, chaptereight, verse one.
(10:28):
This is actuallyeven though this book was written later,
in the biblical period,in the Old Testament period.
It's a prayer attributed to Solomon for,
for wisdom in fact, in in verses21 and 22.
It begins, I learned and theI is here, Solomon.
(10:49):
I learn both what is secretand what is manifest for wisdom.
The fashion are of all things taught me.
So then it goes on and speaks about what?
Wisdom?
The fashion of all things taught.
This writer Solomon here.
And what what is going to follow?
This is,
(11:10):
it's calling wisdom is called a spirit.
So here we have again, something that that, is very important
is the ideaof a personification of wisdom.
we saw that in the book of Proverbswhere it we remember
it says wisdom criesaloud in the street, in the open square.
She raises her voice down the crowded way.
(11:31):
She calls out at the city gates.
She utters her words.
How long as you simple ones you will.
You love an entity.
How long will you turn away at my reproof?
Lo, I will pour out to you my spirit.
I will acquaint you with my words.
So, that in the book of Proverbs123 is the first time
(11:53):
we see, like a personification of wisdom.
The Hebrew word for wisdom is Hawkman, and it's in the feminine.
So where is the prophetic word comes likea command, you know, thus says the Lord.
Wisdom comes as more of an invitation.
Wisdom is trying to appeal to,the desire of a person to be wise.
(12:16):
So, wisdom in Proverbs is personified
as wisdom crying aloud and saying,
don't turn away
from me, lo, I will pour out to youmy spirit.
I will acquaint you with my words.
So wisdom and the spirit are related.
And now we're going to see thisin the Book of Wisdom as I going
(12:37):
back to that prayer of Solomon, he'sgoing to tell us what he learned.
And as I read this, there going to be 21
specific attribute of wisdomthat are presented.
And 21 is what a perfect biblical number.
Perfect number, three times another perfect number seven.
And this is just it's sort of like,
(13:00):
the sevenfold gift of the spirit in Isaiahthat here we have another presentation
of sort of the perfection of the spirit
as seen in wisdom.
So I'll read this verse 2722
and following for in her that is in wisdom
is a spirit intelligent, wholly
(13:21):
unique, manifold, subtle,
agile, clear, unstained, certain,
not baneful, loving the good, keen, unhampered.
Beneficent, kindly. Firm.
Secure, tranquil, all powerful,
all seeing and pervading, all spirits.
(13:42):
So these are 21 attributesyou could look up in a Bible commentary
what one might reflecton the meaning of each of these.
But this isthis is in wisdom, who is personified.
You see that there is the spiritworking in all these different ways.
And to complete that text it goes
(14:03):
on, for wisdom is mobilebeyond all motion.
And she penetrates and pervadesall things by reason of her purity.
So there we have, you know,we've read passages in the wisdom
literature about the spiritpervading all things here.
It's wisdom.
Wisdom is, mobility under motion.
She penetrates and pervadesall things by reason of her purity,
(14:25):
for she is an aura of the might of God
and a pureinfusion of the glory of the Almighty.
Therefore, not nothingthat is solid enters into her, for
she is the reference of eternal light, the spotless mirror of the power of God.
The image of his goodness.
And she that is wisdom, who is one, can do all things
(14:46):
and renews everything while herself
during and passing into holy souls.
From age to ageshe produces friends of God and prophets.
Just don't stop there.
You know, we said this is said of wisdom, but isn't this true of the spirit?
The spirit who can do all things, who renews everything,
(15:07):
who passes into, holy souls, producing friends with God and prophets?
You could say that's true of wisdom.
It's also true of the spiritgoes on in verse 28, for there is nothing
God loves, be itnot one who dwells with wisdom.
For she is fairer than the sun, andsurpasses every constellation of the stars
compared to light.
(15:28):
She takes precedence, but wickednessprevails not over wisdom and deeds.
She reaches from end to end mightilyand governs all things well.
So, this is we'll be closing hereto seeing the
the wisdom literature gives ussort of a bridge to, the New Testament.
(15:48):
And the one hand, you could
ask, well, who is this wisdom who is personified?
Is it God? Is it Jesus?
Well, you know,Saint Paul says in one Corinthians 124,
the, Christ is the powerand the wisdom of God.
But we've also seenthat in these texts, oftentimes
wisdom is equated to the spirit.
(16:11):
The wisdom is a kindly spirit, a spiritwho is the lover of all.
The spirit hasall those wisdom, has all these attributes
which are really also attributesof the Holy Spirit.
So, two in in this
we can see as SaintPaul is able to say, for example,
that the,the spirit, that he prays that his readers
(16:34):
be filled with a spirit of wisdomand discernment for daily living.
So, one way of talking aboutGod's work is wisdom.
And wisdom is closely identified, related
to intertwinedwith the work of the Holy Spirit.
And as we close with the prayerthat I've been praying
at the end of every session, noticehow there is an appeal
(16:56):
that the Holy Spiritwould make us truly wise,
because the spirit is the person of God,who is also the spirit of truth
and the Spirit of truthis obviously related to wisdom.
So let us pray.
Oh God, who
by the light of the Holy Spirit, then instruct the hearts of your faithful.
Grant that by that same Holy Spiritwe may be truly wise
(17:20):
and ever rejoice in his consolationsthrough Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Thank you.
And, join us next time where we continueto study the Holy Spirit.
Spirit in the Old Testament.
