TROJAN WAR - Historical Facts VS Legendary Fiction
On Traveling Through History, we take a look at the Trojan War, the historical aspects of it and the legends and myths from Homer's Iliad and Odyssey. The Trojan War is a mixture of fact and fiction, with archeological evidence supporting the existence of a city called Troy and its destruction around the Late Bronze Age, while the detailed account in Homer's Iliad—including the heroic characters, a decade-long siege, and the Trojan Horse—is largely considered fictional. While there was likely some form of conflict or conflict over centuries, the mythical scale and events of Homer's tale are not supported by evidence and may have been an amalgamation of various events or a later embellishment.
Archeological excavations at Hisarlik in Turkey have confirmed the existence of a Bronze Age city that matches the description of Troy. The city layer known as Troy VIIa shows signs of destruction and burning around 1180 BCE, a timeframe consistent with the Late Bronze Age collapse. There is evidence of contact between the Mycenaean Greeks and the city of Troy during that period. While the story is rich with figures like Achilles, Hector, Helen of Troy, and Agamemnon, they are considered to be entirely fictional or heavily embellished.
