The Farm Bill is a major piece of legislation that comes up for renegotiation and passage every five years. While it is largely composed of nutrition assistance funds, it also plays an important role in ensuring safety nets for farmers. Dr. Bart Fischer, an economist and farm bill expert from Texas A&M University and I visited to unpack the implications of the bill.
Growing up as the fifth generation on a row crop and cattle operation in Southwest Oklahoma, Dr. Fischer now makes his home in College Station, Texas. Following an extensive career in Washington, D.C., he co-directs the TAMU Agricultural and Food Policy Center.
