In this podcast episode, Dr. George Vergolias, an executive coach and forensic psychologist, discusses the significance of effective communication during high-stakes conflicts.
He introduces five core communication tools to help individuals stay grounded and articulate clearly when under pressure.
The tools are:
1) Pause and Anchor, to regulate the nervous system before responding;
2) Use 'I' Statements instead of 'You' accusations, to minimize defensiveness;
3) Seek Understanding Before Judgment, by asking questions to understand the other person’s perspective;
4) The 20-Second Timeout, to self-regulate and process emotions; and
5) Validate Before You Argue, by acknowledging the other person’s feelings first.
Dr. Vergolias emphasizes the importance of practicing these techniques and how they can improve interactions in various aspects of life, including work, home, and everyday situations.
