Seit wann die Menschen Kuchen herstellen, ist nicht genau bekannt. Bereits die alten Ägypter kannten eine Art Honigkuchen, man hat sie als Grabbeigaben gefunden. Feines Gebäck kam erst mit der Verbreitung feinen Zuckers seit dem 16. Jahrhundert auf. Und seit Einführung von Kakao und Vanille im 18. und dem Backpulver im 19. Jhdt, gab es kein Halten mehr.
