Demystifying pre-production,the foundation for success.
Okay, let's start at the verybeginning. Pre-production.
This is the planning phase for your video

(01:24):
and honestly, it's where most of the magic
and efficiency happens.
Skipping the step is like trying
to build a house without the blueprints.
Before anything else, define your videos goals.
Who is your audience?
Are they stay at homemoms, technical engineers,
or on the go singles?
What message do you want to convey?
What action do you want themto take? Get clear on this.

(01:46):
Here's an example. Thegoal, brand awareness.
Audience, local familiesmessage fresh health emails.
It doesn't need to be complicated.
You just gotta start Next scripting.
Write out what you'regoing to say word for word.
A good rule of thumb is approximately 120
to 140 words per minute
of video depending on your speaking speed.

(02:08):
This helps you stay ontrack time, your video,
and keep your message concise.
Don't ramble. Now you can use Gemini
or chat GPT to help you write your script.
It can be hugely beneficial
and speed up the process for you.
For example, I primarily use Gemini,
but the script alwaysreflects my take, my voice
and my ideas.

(02:29):
I'll show you how to achievethis with specific prompts.
First, I create a Gemini gem.
That's a snippet ofbackground information.
You can feed Gemini beforeasking it questions.
This is essential to convey the right tone
for your ideal audience.
For example, I have a Gemini gem
that defines my idealaudience for a video,
and then I write my prompt like this.

(02:50):
Pretty simple. You can bemore detailed of course,
and provide it with far more information.
Just see what the output looks
and then adjust according to your needs.
This pre-planning andseeding the AI engine
before you write your promptwill help you keep the tone
and messaging in alignmentwith your ideal customer.
Next, I take my seed idea andI prompt it for an outline.

(03:12):
Once I have the outline,I add or remove sections.
Then I use it to write the script.
I edit the script, incorporatingmy own examples or stories
and add or remove sections as necessary.
Most of the time I add quitea bit of additional details.
However, having the AIengine write the first draft
of the outline and script takes a lot
of the mental lifting off ofmy plate, allowing me to go in

(03:35):
and add my spin and examples.
Storyboarding. This may sound fancy,
but it simply means planning your shots.
You don't need to be an artist.
Even simple stick figures, showing camera angles, props,
onscreen text, help visualizethe flow of your videos.
It's like a comic bookversion of your video.
I don't use a storyboard
because I just have not felt the need for

(03:57):
what I'm doing specifically
and often as I'm writing thescript, I'm thinking about what
to include in each section, which I suppose is sort
of a rudimentary storyboardprocess, if you will.
Booking and preparation.
This involves practicaltasks such as identifying
and securing your talent.
Who will be on thecamera now for my videos,

(04:17):
that talent's only me.
Then set your schedule.
When and where will you filmgathering your equipment?
What cameras, mics, lights do you need?
I'll cover the specificsof what I use shortly next,
prepare your location.
Is it clean, quiet, well lit?
Take the time here In pre-production,
we'll save you headaches, time and money later on.

(04:37):
It sets a rock solid foundationfor a successful video,
and over time as you do this,
several times you'll get more efficient.
I leave all my equipment in place.
Here's what that looks like.
It's pretty simple, butwhen I'm ready to shoot,
everything is already set.
My two cameras, my lighting, I don't have
to do this every time.
Next step is production, the actual filming.

(04:58):
This is where your planning comes to life,
even if you're just using a smartphone,
these practices are vital for lighting.
I have a large ring light thatI use to eliminate shadows
and inconsistencies in the light.
Those are inexpensive andcan be found on Amazon.
Audio visual quality,this is non-negotiable.
Before you hit record, test your equipment,
is your microphone picking up clear audio?

(05:20):
Now, in terms of the actualmicrophone, I use a lot
of Lear mic that I got on Amazon,
which attaches to my shirt.
The mic is directly connectedto the camera setup,
so my audio is as clear as you can get.
You need to have good audio.
People won't stick aroundif it's poor quality,
so make sure you nail this part.
Plus, here's a tip fordistributing your content.

(05:41):
If you're putting your videos on YouTube,
you can convert those into podcasts
with a simple button in YouTube,
so clearly if your audio is bad,
a podcast isn't going to work.
Well, to continue with that theme,
after rendering your video,
also export the MP three audio file
and create a podcast with iton Apple Podcasts, pod beans,
Spotify, and more.

(06:02):
However, let's return to microphones.
There are many options available including
Bluetooth microphones.
I've experimented withBluetooth microphones,
but I prefer being wireddirectly into the camera,
which eliminates technicalglitches like Bluetooth
disconnection or forgetting to turn it on
and then having to reshoot.
Now, if I film outside
and I'm walking aroundusing a selfie stick

(06:23):
and my phone, then I use Bluetooth mic.
However, inside at my desk,
I'm always hardwired into the camera,
which I know is feedingdirectly into the video
and provides excellent qualityaudio for the camera set up.
If you have a relatively newphone, you can likely shoot it
with your phone.
My pixel phone supports 4K.
I have started using twocameras, one for a direct shot

(06:46):
and a second camera for an angle
to break up the video Forthe direct shot camera
that is pointed directly at me.
I use a full frame mirrorlesscamera that shoots in 4K.
My second camera is an olderDSLR that does not shoot in 4K,
but I upscale footage inpost-production using Adobe Premier
Pro and it works great.
Again, you don't need 4Kfull HD at 10 80 p is high

(07:08):
definition enough to get you started.
Now, set up your shotis your camera in focus?
Many cameras have an auto focus feature
that locks onto the mainsubject or faces good.
Sound clear pictures are crucial
for keeping your viewers engaged.
However, in cases where ashort section is out of focus,
I'll splice in B roll
or a graphic overlay, a conceal,

(07:29):
any blurry sections if necessary.
However, remember that nothingturns someone off faster than
poor audio or blurry video.
Next is lighting. Properlighting sets the mood highlights
your subject anddrastically improves overall
quality production.
You don't need expensive studio lights.
Natural lights from a windowcan be your best friend.

(07:50):
As I mentioned earlier, I usea ring light that works well
to eliminate shadows.
Avoid backlighting where abright window is behind you
as it makes your subject darker,
and some tweaks on lighting can be done
during the video editing process,
but it's always best to start
with your ideal lightingsetting from the beginning,
styling, dress according to

(08:10):
what your ideal audience would expect.
Aligning with who you are, select colors
that align with your brand.
Use props that arerelevant to your message.
For example, for props, Ido have a trade show banner
that I keep in the background here,
which shows we're Google certified,
but other than that,it's just me at my desk
with minimal distractions.
Maximizing onset content while filming.

(08:33):
Consider capturing additional content.
This could be behind thescenes footage, great
for social media later,or B-roll as we call it.
B-roll is extra footage suchas closeups of your product,
shots of your team at work, details of your location
or I often include screenshotsand examples of our work.
B roll ads, visual interest,it breaks up your content

(08:55):
and keeps people engaged.
Here are some examplesof B-roll that I've used.
I use Camtasia for my video editing
and it offers B-rollthat I can easily grab
and drop into my videos.
Now, I have started experimentingwith AI generated video
to create B-roll when I can'tfind what I'm looking for.
That has been okay.
Here's an example ofan AI generated B roll.

(09:15):
I had Gemini create not bad, right,
and it's only going to get better
regarding AI generated videos.
As of now, most peopleprefer authenticity.
Anything not authenticcan turn people off such
as a whole video thatwas generated using ai.
However, using AI to helpcreate short sections of three
to five seconds of B roll works well

(09:36):
streamline post-production,polishing your content
after filming, its timefor post-production,
also known as editing.
This is where you refineyour raw footage into a
polished professional video.
This phase ensures continuity
and reinforces your brand consistency.
Visual effects.
This is where you cut outmistakes, trim unnecessary pauses,

(09:58):
adjust color to makeyour video look vibrant
and ensure clarity.
It's about bringing yourcreative vision to life
and aligning it with yourbrand's visual identity.
Now, I shoot video in raw format,
which looks quite unappealing, straight outta the camera,
but it preserves more details.
I then clean it up to makeit look bright and vibrant.
As you can see here, Iuse Adobe Premier Pro

(10:20):
to color correct my raw videos,
which only takes a few minutesto color correct each video.
However, when I rendera 10 minute 4K video,
it takes three hours
or more with the filebeing five to 10 gigabytes,
4K makes the files huge.
Once a video is color corrected,
all my actual videoediting occurs in Camtasia.
Once the video is colorcorrected, I export the file

(10:42):
and import it into Camtasia.
For more detailed editinghere, I cut ums and ahs
and graphic transitions
and add any additionalsound effects or music.
Sound effects oftenoverlooked but critical.
This involves mixing dialogue, adding narration if needed,
and choosing background music.
Effective audio mixingenhances the sound quality
of your video, making it professional in

(11:04):
keeping viewers engaged.
Bad audio, no matter howgood the visuals are,
is a deal breaker.
People won't stick around. Idon't use many sound effects.
That's probably an areaI could develop further
to make the video a bit more engaging.
However, all of my soundeffects are also created
or I capture them in Camtasia.
Graphic effects.

(11:25):
This includes animations, text graphics, lower thirds,
the text that appears on thebottom of the screen with names
and titles, and incorporatingyour logo graphics,
tie your branding together
and add a polished, more professional look.
They can also explaincomplex information visually.
Again, Camtasia is great for this
and relatively easy to use.

(11:45):
We also use cap cut for shortform videos that we post
as shorts on YouTube.
Next are transitions.
I use transitions betweendifferent points I'm making.
I have a standard set oftransitions, call out sound effects
and more that are allbookmarked so that I don't have
to find new assets each time,
and I would highly recommend bookmarking
or setting up your regulartransition sound effects

(12:08):
and more so that youcan be very efficient.
No need to reinvent thewheel for every video,
which speeds up the production process
because video is time consuming,so everything you can do
to squeeze more time outof the process, the better
strategic calls to action.
This is vital. If you'vewatched some of my other videos,

(12:28):
you know I've talked quitea bit about calls to action.
You have to tell peoplewhat to do next, such
as sign up call you, buy your widget,
or whatever you want themto do, so don't forget
to include strategicallyplaced calls to action.
Make it obvious and easy for them.
Often, this is at the end,
but you can also include subtle CTAs

(12:49):
as we call them throughout.
I include calls toaction in the beginning,
sometimes in the middle, and then also at the end,
budget friendly productionand outsourcing.
Now, you might be thinking, this all sounds great, Toby,
but I'm on a budget, andthat's perfectly fine.
Video production doesn'tneed to break the bank.
Your smartphone with good lighting
and sound can produce incredible quality.

(13:11):
Creativity often trumps expensive gear.
When it comes to handlingproduction, you have a couple
of options in-house production.
This gives you the maximumcontrol over your message,
branding and consistency.
You learn the skills, you manage the process.
It's often more costeffective in the long run
to produce content regularlyand edit it yourself.

(13:33):
We do all our own in-houseproduction and video editing.
We've become efficient and have done this
for over 500 videos.
Outsourcing. You can hire aprofessional video production
company or a freelancer, places like Fiverr or Upwork
or two places you can use to find people
who will edit your videos.
This can save you time andensure a highly polished product.

(13:56):
However, outsourcing can be tricky.
If expectations aren't met,
you must have strong pre-production plans,
script storyboard, cleargoals to communicate exactly
what you want to your outsource team.
Without it, you mightend up with something
that doesn't quite match your vision,
resulting in frustration andadditional costs and more time.

(14:17):
I have really never outsourcedany of my video production.
I have an in-house team memberswho handle video editing.
Okay, wow.
We covered quite a bittoday from the initial spark
of an idea to that final Polish video,
mastering pre-production,
having efficient production day practices
and streamlining yourpost-production editing are all the

(14:38):
keys to creating high qualityeffective marketing videos
for your small businesson an ongoing basis.
Processes are important as well
for helping you scalevideo, video production.
You don't wanna reinventthe wheel every time.
Video is an essential tool in today's
world of digital marketing.
Without a doubt, it willget your brand in front
of far more people

(14:58):
and will help you close more sales,
so don't let the technicalaspects scare you.
Start small experiment.
Remember that clear communication
and a strong plan are your greatest tools.
You just have to get started.I'd love to hear from you.
