BAM! The power dies, the city goes dark, and - you know the fantasy: You’re fearlessly navigating the landscape like an action hero. But seriously, as Ice-T once said, “Shit ain’t like that.” I’m going to debunk some myths that are grounded in truth because let’s face it - most of us are more Michael Sera than Bear Grylls.

undefined

Lynn Jordan: Zero calories and a giant target on your back. (01:03):

Lynn Jordan: paper, but falls apart faster than a cheap tent in a (01:12):

Lynn Jordan: I put that out there because if (01:31):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: you're like me, this is the time (01:32):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: of year when many of us hike and (01:34):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: walk more because it's not (01:35):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: stupid hot. (01:36):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: And I wanted to be sure that everyone had that information. (01:38):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: But for this episode, I'm not (01:41):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: here to sell you a fancy (01:43):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: tomahawk or another questionable (01:44):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: or another questionable bag of (01:47):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: expired MREs. (01:48):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: My goal is simple and it's a heck of a lot more personal. (01:50):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: I'm here to help keep you alive (01:53):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: right in the place you already (01:55):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: call home. (01:56):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: The city. (01:57):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Whether it's an apartment or small house. (01:58):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Forget the wilderness fantasies for a moment. (02:01):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: We're talking about your apartment, your neighborhood. (02:03):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: When everything you take for (02:06):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: granted suddenly grinds to a (02:07):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: halt. (02:09):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: By the end of the next ten minutes, you'll know exactly (02:13):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: what quote unquote common knowledge will get you killed (02:15):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: and what actually works. (02:19):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: When subways stop, shelves empty (02:20):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: and the lights don't come back (02:22):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: on. (02:23):

Lynn Jordan: This isn't about fear mongering. (02:24):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: It's about smart, practical preparation for the world we (02:26):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: actually live in. (02:29):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Myth number one you must bug out immediately. (02:31):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Bugging out feels heroic. (02:34):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: It feels tactical. (02:36):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Picture it. (02:37):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: You a backpack. (02:38):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: The open road. (02:39):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: No traffic, no lights, no rules. (02:40):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: It sounds like freedom, doesn't it? (02:43):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: But here's the reality check. (02:45):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: You probably have kids. (02:47):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Urban highways become absolute parking lots within thirty (02:49):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: minutes of a credible emergency. (02:52):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Bridges. (02:54):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Bottleneck. (02:54):

Lynn Jordan: If you leave on impulse, you're (03:02):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: trading a secured apartment, a (03:03):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: stocked pantry, and no neighbors (03:05):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: for an unpredictable walk (03:07):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: through crowds that may include (03:09):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: desperate people who didn't prep (03:10):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: at all. (03:12):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: The smarter play is default bug in. (03:13):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Lock the door. (03:16):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Fill the tub while water still flows. (03:17):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Black out the windows and stay quiet. (03:19):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Remember, cities have layers of (03:22):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: support police, fire, NGOs, (03:24):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: non-governmental organizations, (03:27):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: and even the National Guard, (03:29):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: which. (03:30):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Well, if you live in the US right now Anyway. (03:31):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Help may arrive faster than you (03:34):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: can hike to an unknown retreat (03:36):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: that probably belongs to someone (03:37):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: else by now, or an area shelter (03:39):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: that is packed to the brim with (03:41):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: anxious and possibly dangerous (03:43):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: people. (03:44):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Conserve calories, conserve (03:45):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: heat, and let information come (03:47):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: to you instead of wandering into (03:49):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: a situation you can't scout your (03:51):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: home, with. (03:53):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Its familiar layout and stored resources, is your first and (03:53):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: best line of defense. (03:56):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: And since my podcast is geared toward the ladies, let's not (03:59):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: forget the most critical aspect. (04:02):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Safety. (04:04):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: If you think things are rough out there now, wait until (04:05):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: there's even less protection than we have currently. (04:07):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: That vision of the tough guy bugging out solo. (04:10):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: We know that it's a lot easier (04:13):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: for him than it would be for us, (04:14):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: especially if there's kids (04:16):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: involved. (04:17):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: So you must plan to bug in for (04:18):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: as long as possible, unless you (04:20):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: absolutely must evacuate, and (04:21):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: then your bug out game must be (04:24):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: tighter than your pants on (04:25):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Thanksgiving. (04:26):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: My next episode will be about that. (04:28):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Myth two Gear beats skills every time. (04:31):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: YouTube preppers love unboxing titanium sporks, don't they? (04:35):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Algorithms push Gear porn because it's shiny, affiliate (04:39):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: linked and easy to film. (04:42):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: It taps into that primal desire for a quick fix. (04:44):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: No shade. (04:47):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: To my fellow preppers who are gearheads, that information is (04:47):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: definitely useful, but a six hundred dollar pack does not (04:50):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: turn beans into calories or a tarp into shelter. (04:54):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Your brain does that. (04:57):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Your ingenuity does. (04:58):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Cities already contain the real survival tools. (05:00):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Water heaters hold forty gallons (05:03):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: of drinkable water if you filter (05:05):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: it. (05:06):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Hardware stores stock cheap bleach that can purify hundreds (05:07):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: of gallons of it. (05:10):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: And libraries and libraries have how to manuals. (05:11):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Spend just one hour learning to splice a water valve with a soda (05:16):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: bottle and a rubber band, and you instantly outrank the guy (05:19):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: who owns three tactical hatchets but can't tell you how to safely (05:22):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: start a small fire indoors. (05:25):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: gear can break, get stolen, or (05:28):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: are at the office when you're at (05:30):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: home. (05:32):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Skills, however, travel lighter than any gadget. (05:33):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: They're in your head, they're (05:36):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: part of you, and no one can ever (05:37):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: confiscate them. (05:39):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: They are the ultimate portable survival kit. (05:40):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Myth three disasters are a somebody else problem. (05:44):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Last winter, Texas proved that a (05:48):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: stable grid is a suggestion, not (05:50):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: a promise. (05:52):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: one frozen valve and millions (05:54):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: shivered in condos they thought (05:56):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: were immune. (05:57):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Complacency, my friends, is the city's most contagious disease. (05:58):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: It lets people go. (06:02):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: It lets people store zero water, zero food, and a flashlight with (06:04):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: half dead batteries. (06:08):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Then the elevator stops and they (06:09):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: suddenly realize apartments (06:11):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: don't magically stay seventy (06:13):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: degrees. (06:14):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Disasters are brutally nondiscriminatory. (06:15):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Heat waves kill more Americans (06:18):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: than hurricanes, and brownouts (06:19):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: can cascade into week long (06:21):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Blackouts. (06:23):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: When I have cursory (06:25):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: conversations with people (06:26):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: regarding prepping, they'll (06:27):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: often say something along the (06:28):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: lines of, "oh, I can't do that" (06:29):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: or "stuff like that won't happen (06:31):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: here." (06:33):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: What I'm really hearing is that they hope they won't get caught (06:34):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: out there with no food or water, or need to evacuate. (06:37):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: They hope that events like these won't happen where they are. (06:40):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: I have never understood people (06:44):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: who believe that a tragic event (06:45):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: won't happen to them or in their (06:46):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: town, and are devastated when it (06:48):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: does. (06:50):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: The belief that bad things (06:51):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: happen elsewhere to other people (06:52):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: is dangerous. (06:54):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Thinking that prevents you from (06:55):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: being ready should something bad (06:56):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: occur. (06:58):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: The only way to truly inoculate (06:59):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: yourself against this dangerous (07:01):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: complacency is to accept a (07:02):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: fundamental truth. (07:04):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: The next failure will include you. (07:06):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: It might not be tomorrow, but it will happen. (07:08):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Accept that and you'll actually fill that two dollar jug of (07:10):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: water sitting in the corner of your kitchen instead of (07:14):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: strolling past it. (07:16):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: You'll check those batteries. (07:18):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: You'll take that small but critical step towards being (07:19):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: ready Because it's your problem and your solution. (07:22):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Myth four food is your first priority. (07:26):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Food is comforting, so we fixate on it. (07:30):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: It's a very primal fear, isn't it? (07:32):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: But here's the truth. (07:34):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: You can walk about thirty days on stored body fat if you stay (07:35):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: hydrated in the city. (07:38):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Water is the urgent variable one (07:40):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: broken main and every faucet (07:43):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: becomes decoration. (07:44):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: After that comes core temperature. (07:46):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Can you stay warm or cool at night without grid power? (07:48):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Solve those two issues and food becomes a logistics problem, not (07:51):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: a survival cliff. (07:54):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: You should have water stored (07:56):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: either in bottles or in space (07:58):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: saving packets. (07:59):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Yes, those exist, but if you don't, or if you've run out. (08:01):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Start with a simple three tier water plan. (08:04):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Drink what's in the kettle, then (08:07):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: the hot water tank, then the (08:09):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: toilet tank. (08:10):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: If desperate after proper treatment, of course. (08:11):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: For heat, throw every towel and sheet into the smallest room. (08:14):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Add candles inside a wide ceramic pot safely with (08:17):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: ventilation, and you've built a microclimate that buys time (08:20):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: without burning the place down. (08:24):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Eat the perishables first, then open the cans. (08:26):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Calories matter, but not on day one. (08:29):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Prioritize water, then warmth, then food. (08:31):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Myth number five you can just ration water. (08:36):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: The sip and survive mantra sounds disciplined. (08:39):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Measure every gulp like you're on Mars or something. (08:42):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: But here's the grim reality dehydration collapses judgment (08:45):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: faster than alcohol. (08:49):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Your brain literally shrinks. (08:50):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: A far better rule is to drink when thirsty. (08:52):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: City landscapes hide sauces most people ignore. (08:55):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: In offices, there's the water cooler, of course. (08:58):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: But did you remember that coffee machines can hold water? (09:00):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: The large commercial ones often (09:03):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: hold two gallons inside their (09:05):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: tanks. (09:06):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Vending machine coils collect condensation. (09:07):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: There may be a mop, bucket or two around. (09:10):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Not ideal, I know, but remember you'll be purifying it. (09:12):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Boil bleach or LifeStraw it, but get it into your system. (09:17):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Instead of nursing a thimble while your kidneys scream. (09:21):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Rationing works only when a (09:23):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: resupply date is guaranteed, but (09:25):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: in an open ended crisis, the (09:27):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: winning move is active (09:29):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: procurement, not monk level (09:30):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: self-denial. (09:32):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Your brain, your body, and your (09:33):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: chances of survival depend on (09:35):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: staying hydrated and thinking (09:36):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: clearly. (09:38):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Drink what you need while (09:39):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: figuring out where and how to (09:40):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: get more. (09:41):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: All right, quick pause, quick favor. (09:43):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: If this is making you rethink your entire survival strategy, (09:46):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: if it's sparking new ideas and rewiring your old assumptions, (09:49):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: then do me a solid. (09:52):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Follow my podcast and socials and YouTubers, hit those like (09:54):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: and subscribe buttons. (09:57):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: and more importantly, drop a comment. (09:59):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: What's the biggest, most ridiculous urban survival myth (10:01):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: you still hear repeated? (10:04):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: I genuinely read every comment, (10:05):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: and your story might just save (10:07):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: someone else from a very bad (10:09):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: day. (10:10):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Let's build a community of smart urban survivors. (10:11):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: So let's quickly recap before these crucial insights start to (10:15):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: fade into the background noise of the internet. (10:18):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: We covered a lot of ground and (10:21):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: hopefully we've shattered some (10:23):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: dangerous illusions. (10:24):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: First off, bugging out is a tool, a last resort, not some (10:26):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: knee jerk reflex. (10:30):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Your default. (10:32):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Your safest bet is almost always (10:32):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: to stay put to bug in, unless (10:35):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: your immediate surroundings are (10:37):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: literally on fire or actively (10:38):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: collapsing. (10:40):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Second, skills unequivocally (10:41):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: outweigh gear because skills (10:43):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: weigh nothing and can't be (10:46):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: confiscated. (10:47):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: All that shiny equipment is great, but it's useless without (10:48):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: the knowledge to wield it. (10:51):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Invest in your brain, not just your backpack. (10:52):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Third, disasters aren't some abstract problem for a quote (10:56):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: unquote other people. (10:59):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: They are intensely personal. (11:01):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: The only way to truly prepare is to act as if the next major (11:03):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: failure has your name on it. (11:06):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Fourth, when it comes to urgency, water and shelter (11:08):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: fundamentally beat food. (11:12):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Prioritize accordingly. (11:13):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: And finally, hydrate. (11:15):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Smart. (11:17):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Forget the sip and survive nonsense that leads to delirium. (11:17):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Drink when you're thirsty. (11:21):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Then proactively, aggressively find more water. (11:22):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Ultimately, urban survival isn't about looking like some hardened (11:26):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: prepper on Instagram. (11:29):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: It's about something far more (11:31):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: fundamental and far more (11:32):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: powerful. (11:33):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: It's staying alive, staying sane, and protecting your loved (11:34):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: ones in the small house or apartment you already call home. (11:37):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Lock that door. (11:41):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Fill that water bottle. (11:42):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Learn one new skill this week, (11:43):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: and you're already ahead of (11:45):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: ninety percent of your (11:47):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: neighbors. (11:47):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Thanks for listening. (11:49):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: Until next time. (11:50):
undefined

Lynn Jordan: This is the urban prepper signing off. (11:51):

The Brothers Ortiz

The Brothers Ortiz

The Brothers Ortiz is the story of two brothers–both successful, but in very different ways. Gabe Ortiz becomes a third-highest ranking officer in all of Texas while his younger brother Larry climbs the ranks in Puro Tango Blast, a notorious Texas Prison gang. Gabe doesn’t know all the details of his brother’s nefarious dealings, and he’s made a point not to ask, to protect their relationship. But when Larry is murdered during a home invasion in a rented beach house, Gabe has no choice but to look into what happened that night. To solve Larry’s murder, Gabe, and the whole Ortiz family, must ask each other tough questions.
