FC Nordsjælland fristede en tilværelse i miden af superligaen, da klubben gik ind til sæsonen 2011/2012. Morten Wieghorst, den cheftræner, der havde ført klubben til to pokaltriumfer på to år, var stoppet og assistenttræneren var blevet forfremmet. Han hed Kasper Hjulmand. Han havde en anden måde at være træner på – og nogle andre idéer til spillestil.
Sæsonen 2011/2012 startede ujævnt, men pludselig begyndte holdet at vinde kampe og knuse sine modstandere med en helt særlig måde at spille på. I sidste ende rakte det til et overraskende dansk mesterskab.
