Its origins trace back to the Appalachian Mountains, specifically in the Allegheny Mountains, where the river's headwaters begin their journey across the landscape. This magnificent river has played a pivotal role in shaping the history, culture, and economy of the region.
The James River is at risk from 1,100 toxic storage sites, up to 5 billion gallons of coal ash and millions of gallons of crude oil traveling along the shore.
