Speaker 1 (00:00):
From a year ago that the wide receiver room really
looks a lot different right now with Devo gone, with
with branded uh you know, not cleared. How do you
feel about just your chemistry and working with the group
of wide receivers that are going to be opening camp tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
Yeah, I mean, obviously, I think we're gonna, you know,
need some work with uh, the new guys, the young guys.
The receiver room for sure looks different, and you know,
obviously every single year it's gonna be a little different.
But for me, this is a crucial time to continue
to work with those guys, the new guys, and you know,
for timing purposes and just getting to know everybody's body
(00:40):
movements and getting in and out of cuts and stuff
like that. So, uh, big time a year for that.
But that's sort of been the case every year when
we get back and get back into you know, the
flow of things. But I think, you know, for the
young guys especially, it's it's gonna be cool to see them,
you know, compete and learn and go through just more
pressured situations and stuff and see how they handle that.
(01:01):
And but it's it's good for everybody across the board.
So definitely gonna be new. It's gonna be a challenge,
but a good challenge for all of us, and I'm
excited for it.
Speaker 3 (01:10):
Are you kind of leading forward to the possibility, well,
not the possibility, but being able to use training camp
to get used to throwing to these new faces. Is
that one of the things that when you think about
training camp you're really looking forward to.
Speaker 2 (01:21):
Yeah, I mean, obviously it's a it's a growth period
to get to week one of the season, and but
within that we get to see guys, you know, step
up to the occasion when you're going against the top
guys on our defense and we get into some periods
where you know, we're replicating third downs and uh, every
(01:41):
little thing matters, and so I think it's really good,
you know, for obviously the young guys, the new guys
you know, to come in in our system, and then
for me to be able to execute and throw them
a ball and tight coverage, and it's it's just a
great time of year to to you know, build chemistry,
but also see who's willing to compete and be ready
to you know, be a guy come week one in
(02:01):
the season. So that's what excites me and I know,
everyone in the locker room is excited for those moments too.
Speaker 4 (02:07):
Worked with Jacob Poeing and Ricky Pearsel before Mini Camp.
Did you work with any other receivers between.
Speaker 5 (02:13):
Then and now?
Speaker 1 (02:15):
No?
Speaker 6 (02:15):
On our team, it was just those guys. Yeah, it'll Tennessee.
Speaker 2 (02:21):
Yeah, obviously got some work with Kittle, Mason Flyne shout out,
But the receiver wise was just Ricky and Jacob in
Florida early in the off season.
Speaker 3 (02:32):
So George and the other tight ends that were out there, correct.
Speaker 2 (02:36):
Yeah, yeah, they obviously at George's place. It's just a
bunch of tight ends and and everything, but really good
work that we got.
Speaker 6 (02:42):
So I was excited about that.
Speaker 7 (02:43):
From a training perspective, did you do anything different during
the downtime here or what what kind of was your was.
Speaker 8 (02:49):
Your process this up?
Speaker 2 (02:51):
I mean, you know, pretty similar honestly to the last
couple of years. You know, I got my guys in
Florida and their whole training program and stuff that they
do for quarterbacks, So just sticking to that and then
you know, throwing like we said, you know, Kittle and
a bunch of other tight ends and stuff. So I
think it was really nice to you know, get work
in with you know NFL caliber uh tight ends, just
(03:13):
the work that they come in ready to to do
every single day and throwing the move in targets and
stuff like that. So that was a little bit different,
which was awesome. But outside of that, I go about
my process the same that I have years past with
my quarterback stuff and weight room things and speed training, uh,
just to get ready for the volume of what training
camp in the season looks like anything specific that you
(03:33):
or wasn't anything specific that you wanted to attack this offseason, honestly,
just continue to work on my mobility and stuff. I
feel like I'm somewhat more of a stiff you know quarterback.
That's not a bad thing, but something that I always
try to work on is just you know, my you know,
my my arm and mobility with that and keeping it
you know, stretched out and stuff. But outside of that,
(03:55):
it's more so you know, making sure I'm on top
of my mechanics when and throwing to the sideline deep ball,
you know, some some running things and making sure I'm
in shape with my legs. So I mean those are
all little things that I just try to hone in on.
Speaker 6 (04:11):
Stiff quarterback what do you bet?
Speaker 2 (04:13):
I mean, just like just mobility wise, like my arm
and stuff. I feel like I'm like a compact quarterback
and so just making sure I'm stretching and trying to
not be loose, loose or anything. But a guy who
you know can make certain arm angle throws and stuff
like that. So working on that.
Speaker 9 (04:30):
You talk a lot about being the same guy every day.
I'm curious whether financial security and the responsibility that goes
with that the team is placed in you. It must
have changed your life some, but does it change your
approach or change anything about who you are?
Speaker 6 (04:46):
No.
Speaker 2 (04:48):
I mean, obviously the organization, that's their way of, you know,
showing that they, you know, put their trust and faith
in me as a guy to lead this organization, and
I'm very honored for that. Obviously, I've always believed that
I'm able to be that guy for this organization and
so but it doesn't matter how much I get paid. Man,
every single year, my process has been how do I
(05:08):
get ready for this game and any play or situation
that I'm put in. I this is my answer, and
I gotta go get to my answer and do that consistently.
Speaker 6 (05:18):
Find ways to win games.
Speaker 2 (05:19):
You obviously put a season together, get to the playoffs
and try to get and win a Super Bowl and so,
and that doesn't matter how much I get paid. So
for me, it's still getting better. The tape doesn't lie.
I gotta watch the tape, and and Shanahan, Kubiak, Lombardi,
they're all real with me about where I need to
get better and they push me with that, which I
love and so, but that's my mindset every single day,
(05:41):
doesn't matter how much I'm getting paid or or what
I'm gonna go out there, and anytime I step out
in the field, I'm the quarterback for the San Francisco
forty nine ers, and there's a standard that I got
to play at and a chip that I have to
have on my shoulder every single rep, every single day.
So I don't look at it any differently. I never
have and and I won't. So That's where I'm gonna
be at. Moving forward to.
Speaker 7 (06:00):
What's going on with Jawan Jennings and his contract and
how important is it to get that taken care of
so you can be on the field of you guys.
Speaker 2 (06:05):
I mean, it's extremely important. Obviously love JJ and what
he brings to our team. And to myself as a quarterback. Obviously,
we've had so much success together and anytime you see
something like this going on, you know, as a player,
it's like, man, like, let's figure out something so he
can get back out on the field and we can
continue to do what we've done.
Speaker 6 (06:24):
So obviously, I.
Speaker 2 (06:26):
Hope everything gets handled and everything, but I would love
my guy to be out there on the field with.
Speaker 7 (06:30):
Mean to like where he Sorry, can you remember the
first two times where he earned your trust on those
like third down throws or specific instances where you go, oh,
this guy's gonna be a good target for me.
Speaker 2 (06:46):
Yeah, I think Seattle. I can't remember if it was
my rookie or second year. I threw him, you know,
like an out route at four yards. It was like
third and seven and he broke like three guys off
him and then got the first down. I was like, okay, Like,
you know, Jan's a guy that's gonna fight until the
very last whistle or breath that he has, Like he's
a gamer man, and uh, obviously he's done that just
(07:08):
game after game. You know, he's he fights his butt off,
he blocks his butt off for everybody. It's not just
about Juwan like he's he's doing it for everyone on
the field and and for his team. So absolutely love
playing with him and his mindset every game man.
Speaker 6 (07:23):
So obviously have nothing but respect for Drawn and that's
my guy.
Speaker 4 (07:26):
So yeah, with so many new players and switch you
uh right now in the team, does the locker room
feel different energetically than it did a year ago?
Speaker 2 (07:34):
Yeah, I mean it's definitely different. We got new guys,
added young guys. You know, we definitely just got to
use this time to find out who we are as
a team as a unit. And but the energy is good,
you know. I think a lot of guys have come
in ready to to play for the for the Niners
and in this culture that we've built, and it's a
it's an exciting time. Obviously, there's gonna be some challenges
(07:55):
with it. I think this is gonna be a good
time of year to you know, go through some adversity
and and some some conflict and how do we figure
that out together? So but everyone's ready for it. We've
had a long offseason obviously not making the playoffs, so
a lot of guys are itching to get back and
compete and play football.
Speaker 10 (08:11):
So I mentioned coaches being real with you.
Speaker 8 (08:14):
Through the years, a.
Speaker 10 (08:15):
Lot of the guys have talked about I'm Shanning, and
I guess one of his best qualities is is honesty,
Like he'll tell you the truth even if it's hard.
Is there like anything you could share publicly of something
he said to you that was like, well, that's kind
of difficult to hear.
Speaker 8 (08:32):
But it was helpful.
Speaker 6 (08:34):
Yeah. I think just being consistent.
Speaker 2 (08:37):
And I think there's you know, plays that show up
that you know, come down to like fourth quarter decisions, man,
like if we make this completion here, we can run
out the clock and win the game kind of thing.
And you know, for me, it's like, all right, this guy,
like he's telling the truth, and that's something that I'll
always remember certain games, certain situation and there was a
(08:57):
couple that happened last year, but you know, he's just
real with me about it, and which I love. I
don't want a guy that's going to sugarcoat and say, oh,
a couple of plays here and there. For me, what
I want to hear is now we get in this
moment in the fourth quarter, like you're going to be
the guy that needs to make this completion and we
believe in you to do it, So do it. And
I love that. That's the kind of coaching that I
want and it helps me get better.
Speaker 8 (09:16):
So yeah, Cole mentions how to open the roster is
in terms of competition this year. You sense that also,
And how cool is that as a leader of this
team to see that our guys are fighting for these
wide open spots.
Speaker 2 (09:27):
Yeah, I mean it's obviously it's a I think it
could be a really good thing. Man, when you got
young guys come in, you guys come in. You know,
there's some obviously there's positions that are open for, you know,
someone to go and take.
Speaker 6 (09:38):
And it's not easy. It's the NFL.
Speaker 2 (09:40):
You have to go out and earn it every single day,
every single meeting, moment, you name it. And but I
think more than anything, this is just going to get
us ready for the fire that we're about to encounter
when it comes season. You know, you want to have
guys that are battle tested and they've been through the
moments and high pressured situations. You want a guy that
you can rely on. And so I think this is
a good time for all these young guys to compete
(10:02):
and we see, you know, who takes the next step
and can separate themselves.
Speaker 9 (10:06):
Good at buying extra time.
Speaker 11 (10:08):
Last year in the pocket is the arm flexibility thing,
different angles part of that to really kind of take
advantage of you know, you know getting out of the.
Speaker 5 (10:21):
Pocket and you know doing some of the things that
Patrick Mahomes is able to do.
Speaker 9 (10:26):
That sort of thing.
Speaker 2 (10:28):
Uh yeah, I mean playing the position of quarterback, there's
so many different arm angles. And I know you guys
have heard this, but yeah, there's you know, throwing, perfect timing,
perfect blocking up front, throwing in the pocket that seems
like it could be routes on air that's easy, but
the reality is you got eleven on eleven, You got
to pass, rush, you got different blitzes, you got guys
coming like down the middle that you got to throw around.
(10:50):
So yeah, when I say like working on arm mobility
and stuff, it's just maintaining what I've done the last
couple of years to be ready for those kinds of situations.
If I'm moving on the run, if I got to
throw around a guy, if it's a screen pass and
I got to throw a round up six' eight defensive,
end it's just being ready for those.
Speaker 6 (11:06):
Moments so that's WHAT i mean.
Speaker 1 (11:09):
Camp how did the veteran, guys the guys who've been
the main stays kind of band together about bringing the,
rookies especially on the defensive side of the, ball where
you have so many rookies who have a chance to
make significant. Impacts what do you guys have to put
on your shoulders to get them out climb?
Speaker 12 (11:26):
Hated you, KNOW i don't really think it's going to
take anything extra than what we've brought to the, team you,
know all these, Years to be, honest, LIKE i think
the key is to be is to be consistent setting
the tone every single, day and as the young guys see,
that they fall right in. Line you see it every single.
Year you, know guys just kind of come in there
like oh, shoot like all, right like this is how
(11:48):
it's supposed to be, done and they kind of just
fall in. Line and you, know you challenge those. Guys
but training camp is about. Competition it's about building this
thing from the ground. Up you, know every team around
the league right, now all thirty, two they're talking about
how they want to go and win The Super bowl
and it sounds, great but you, know it takes so
much time to before you even think about something like, That,
Right it's just about taking it one day at a
(12:08):
time and really just building it conversations with the.
Speaker 4 (12:11):
Young guys about what they need to be doing during
the forty days.
Speaker 12 (12:14):
Away, Yeah, NO i had a great. CONVERSATION i think
we beat it into the young guys more than anybody
in the, league, Honestly like just talking about what those
those forty days need to look. Like AND i remember
me And george sitting up here with the rookies sitting
where you guys were sitting and talking to them about
how we go about. It you, know there's there's different
ways to ge from POINT a to POINT, b but
(12:35):
more than, anything it's about just putting yourself in the
best position possible to compete in training.
Speaker 3 (12:40):
CAMP i guess head Coach kyle shitehand about like the
realistic expectations given it so many young guys can be
out there starting with you, guys from your perspective as a,
Leader are there anything that You're is there anything that
you're saying to them where it's LIKE i want you
to dial in on. This you need to pay att
it to, this this something that you need to do
(13:01):
and we can be successful and kind of Minimum, uh
what the World i'm looking for minimize those mistakes early.
Speaker 5 (13:07):
On.
Speaker 12 (13:08):
Yeah, uh to be, honest, UH i know a lot
of the narrative right now is that we're relying on
these these young rookies specifically to come in and play
meaningful minutes for, us which is is, True like we're
gonna need young guys just like we do every single
year to come in and and and have a role
for our, team whether it's, offense, defense special. Teams but
you gotta remember that they are rookies, too you, know
(13:30):
and that, uh we have a lot of guys who
we either brought in through free agency or young guys
who have been on the team who they need to
take that next step right like they need to be
able to to fill roles and be and be just
as as big a part of the team as the,
rookies and rookies are gonna be, rookies like you gotta
uh continue to teach them and coach them and they'll
that's the that's the coach's, job Right I'm i'm there
(13:52):
to to help leading guys as much AS i, can
but at the end of the, day like everybody's gotta
do their one eleven uh out.
Speaker 8 (13:58):
On the field SEE d winners this, Offseason.
Speaker 12 (14:02):
I've seen a lot of. Growth, HONESTLY i Think i've
seen a guy who's ready to take that next. Step you,
KNOW d has flashed in a big way through his
first two, seasons AND i think year three is that
is that year where it's, like, MAN i know the,
SYSTEM i know WHAT i needed to do in the,
offseason and now it's time for me to take control
and really and really put it on. Tape and So
i'm excited FOR. D. REALLY i think he had a
(14:22):
great OTAs i know that he's been working his tail
off to be ready for for training, camp and So
i'm excited to see what he's gonna.
Speaker 5 (14:30):
Do points last season where you, Thought, okay he's right
on the verge of kind of taking over that week
side role and THEN i don't know what an injury would,
happen then he, would you, know move. BACKWARDS i mean
where was he last? Year and do you see a
different player this?
Speaker 6 (14:47):
Year?
Speaker 12 (14:48):
YEAH I mean that's that's one of those things that
people don't really talk about a, lot is like just
being healthy enough to be out there and get those
reps and really. Compound, uh you, know putting things together
over and over and over.
Speaker 5 (14:58):
Again when you when you.
Speaker 12 (14:59):
Have an, injury it kind of sets you back and
then you kind of started back over from where you,
were and you're constantly playing his battle of trying to
like stay in, it staying in. Shape you, know you
can't just continue to get better at your, craft, right
and SO i think that's going to be the biggest
thing for. Him this training, camp honestly is just, man
just be out there every single day with intent to be,
better you, know and to really own. It you, know
if you want it to be, yours it's there for the.
(15:20):
Taking and you, KNOW i think that's that's the biggest
thing for. Him, man just playing with, confidence you, know
if you want to be that, guy man to go
out there and show your, teammate show show the, coaches
show everybody that you're, ready you.
Speaker 6 (15:31):
Know and So i'm excited for.
Speaker 4 (15:32):
Him.
Speaker 6 (15:32):
Honestly can you.
Speaker 7 (15:33):
Talk about how ready your ankle is now after you
rested mostly in the, Spring i'm guessing to stay off
it after what you did last, season and how you're
feeling coming into.
Speaker 12 (15:43):
Camp, Yeah, NO i feel. Amazing you. Know OTAs was
honestly had nothing to do with the. Ankle it was
just how my process has gone these last few years
of not having to be out there During phase. Three
BUT i feel the Best i've ever felt.
Speaker 7 (15:58):
What you went through last year to stay on the
field every game and.
Speaker 12 (16:02):
You, know, yeah, NO i mean it's crossed my, mind
especially going into in the camp, now like knowing like
during my, training like not having to even think about
it or worry about it is like it's a breath
of fresh. Air, honestly just to be able to go
out there and just be myself. Again But i'll have
time to fully reflect on all that stuff at the
at the very, End.
Speaker 4 (16:21):
What's something you wish you knew as a rookie.
Speaker 5 (16:22):
That you know?
Speaker 12 (16:23):
Now probably that everybody is a human being just like.
Me you. Know it's, LIKE i think the biggest hurdle
for a rookie is like that mental hurdle of, like all,
right my whole, Childhood i've been growing up watching these
guys ON tv and even in. College you, know you
watch players that you admire FROM afar and then you're
(16:43):
finally here and it's, like oh my, god That's George
kittle and oh It's christian. McCaffrey, oh my, Gosh Nick,
Boson it's, like you can't really like fathom putting yourself
on that same level as these as the type of
guys that have been there and done it and earned
it at the highest, level right and, so but at
the end of the, day they are human beings and
we were all rookie once and you, know you're here
for a. Reason you obviously have the talent to compete
(17:04):
at this. Level the only thing that we had to
our advantage is that, experience and so the quicker that
you can catch on to the plays and really realizing
that you, belong you can really let your honestly your
youth and you, know your ability to go out there
and compete and be a.
Speaker 4 (17:22):
Guy you can't believe it's day. One does it feel
like you've been chomping at the Bit january to get
here finally get.
Speaker 12 (17:29):
Sea. Yeah most definitely the longest off season of my.
Life you, know it was just like obviously not making the,
playoffs it it did feel.
Speaker 6 (17:37):
Long it wasn't.
Speaker 12 (17:38):
NEEDED i think everybody kind of got that a, recovery,
rejuvenation whatever you want to call it. To you, know
really feel that fire going into this camp AND i
fully expect it to be the most competitive and in
hard fought camp that we've.
Speaker 6 (17:52):
Had the best non.
Speaker 5 (17:53):
Footballa Tom lynch told the story Of you back in
twenty eighteen about him going into the locker room at
night one night. Picking the locker room was empty and
he found you sort of in the corner looking at
a knightpad studying. Essentially do you ever relay that to you,
Know Nick martin rookies and do you see any of
(18:15):
those guys doing that sort of studying that it takes
to really make an impact as a.
Speaker 12 (18:21):
Rookie, Yeah, NO i try. TO i honestly try to
be a help to any of the young players THAT
i can anytime they got questions and giving them that
feedback THAT i. CAN i THINK i, remember just as a,
rookie wanted to make SURE i was on top of
it in terms of the, playbook, because LIKE i mentioned,
before everybody else who's been here they have that experience
and the advantage of having been here and learned the system,
(18:43):
right so they're able to kind of just get right
in the flow of, like, man let me work on my,
craft versus a rookie you're learning the plays while trying
to get it trying to be in shape and trying
to work on your breaks and your. Punches it's like
it's so many different things you're trying to. Battle it's
like the last thing you want to think about in
a play is, like, man what's my? Assignment i'm. Saying,
so the more that you can study and catch up
(19:04):
in that way, mentally that's going to allow you to
now have a chance at competing and doing those those
little small minute details that we harp on every single. Day,
Right so, yeah, MAN i try to help it in
any WAY i.
Speaker 9 (19:16):
Can non football highlight of the of the off.
Speaker 12 (19:19):
Season non football, highlight you, know, honestly just having as
much time AS i did with my wife and my.
Speaker 5 (19:27):
Son it.
Speaker 12 (19:27):
Was it was amazing just being able to spend time
with them and kind of travel around do what we.
Do what we, did and you, Know i'm big on family,
time SO i missed that part the.
Speaker 6 (19:38):
Most when we.
Speaker 10 (19:40):
Metured camp With solid who's new but obviously not, new
is it?
Speaker 8 (19:44):
DIFFERENT i, MEAN i Guess i'm asking With wilks And.
Speaker 10 (19:47):
Sorens and by the time you guys got to, camp
did you feel, Like, OKAY i got a new? COORDINATOR B,
well on the same page or did it take a
while in the last two years kind of feel, Like,
okay we're a little more.
Speaker 12 (19:58):
Cohesive, yeah, NO i MEAN i feel like we were
in a great spot the last two.
Speaker 6 (20:02):
Years you.
Speaker 12 (20:02):
KNOW i think the ability to continue to play in
the same system through eight years now has been a
huge advantage for a guy like me or a guy Like,
bosa anybody who's played in the. System, like when you're
able to really continue to perfect your craft in the same,
system that's where you get. Better and so obviously it's
been different, coaches different, adjustments but at the end of
(20:24):
the day's playing in the same system has been a game.
Speaker 6 (20:27):
Changer cool, guys
