Speaker 1 (00:09):
Welcome to You've Got Mail, presented by Delta Dental. I'm
your host Brianna Janelle. In today's episode features forty nine
Ers offensive lineman Colton mckivitz. Now big news for the
offensive lineman this week he just signed a three year
extension with the team. Head coach Kyle Shanahan gave him
a ton of praise, calling him reliable, a true leader,
and a definition of a forty nine er. Now, in
(00:30):
this episode, Colton dives into his background and he answers
questions directly from the faithful. So if you'd like your
question featured in a future episode, make sure to follow
the forty nine Ers on social media to submit. Now,
make sure to subscribe to You've Got Mail on sirius
XM and your favorite podcast platform. Here's Colton mckivitz. When
I google your name, I see that a mural was
(00:52):
made in your honor, that is in a golf tournament
or more about that.
Speaker 2 (00:58):
So I grew up in I guess it's the dark town.
It's not even a town, it's like a It's Centerville, Ohio,
but it's Jacobsburg. It's so small. We claim the next
town down because they have the post office. So it's
pretty rural America, southeastern Ohio, kind of Ohio Valley area.
I was born in Wheeling, West Virginia, and I like,
(01:21):
in small town America, it's like, don't forget who you
are or where you came from. In the first couple
of years, I kind of did that, like I'd always
go back, but never was super involved in the community.
And now I'm at a point where I'm confident in
my football and confident where I am mentally physically, like
being married now my family like where I'm at. So
this year was the first year of me giving back
(01:43):
and we hosted our first golf scrambled the Cole Mckivit's
first golf scramble, which is crazy to think that there's
a golf name on it. Yeah, I mean we raised
over twenty thousand and had like one hundred and forty golfers,
So it was crazy for a first year and it
just shows what small town can do. And then the
mural they I mean, it's kind of crazy to think,
being as young as I am to have a jersey
(02:05):
retired only player in my high school to do it.
And then now a mural on the field house, which
is kind of the plan with what we're going to
do with the fundraisers build in a new field house.
So to already have that on there, it's a pretty
big honor. And I wish we had time to go
back and catch high school games. But it just shows
you know, when you do give back and you do
(02:25):
things right, that people get behind you. And it's cool
to pinch yourself to being an opportunity like the NFL
and come where I'm from and then to give back
and then they give so much more. It's you know,
you give one step and then give a thousand back.
So it's crazy to see a mural of my jersey
on there and who I am as a person on
a wall and at my high school and people see that,
(02:47):
so it's, yeah, it's just very blessed for me.
Speaker 1 (02:50):
That is so so cool. Congratulations on receiving recognition like that,
especially from your hometown. I know that could be so meaningful,
but like, not only are you giving back to your hometown,
you're giving back in your new hometown the bank, this
is where you live and breathe and work and in
San Francisco. This off season or should I call it
on the season on season you hosted a youth football
(03:13):
camp out there. That wasn't just a all right, here's
some T shirts and run around the field. It was
real intense. It was a multi day event. You worked
with you guys, You talked about mental health. You guys
were working out in the streets and doing O line
drills in the glass. Like, tell me more about that,
How that idea came to life and how you you know,
execute something like that.
Speaker 3 (03:33):
Yeah, So I'll.
Speaker 2 (03:35):
Kind of start where I met my mentor who came
in a year ago. Target's names his name. He runs,
some power and just absolute gem of a human. And
you know when we were told about a bear hunt
and I was like, all right, I'll go to Idaho
and meet this guy and going to a bear hunt.
Speaker 3 (03:53):
That's what I thought it was.
Speaker 2 (03:54):
Well, it turns out I figured out, you know, realize
that you're not who you say you are, Like a
lot of mental stuff, like just kind of recognizing that,
oh I haven't been working as hard as I was.
And then when I found this, I was like, okay,
And I used it all last year and had a
good year, and I was like and it was just
mental mental workshopping, that was it. No nothing physical with
(04:15):
with coach t nothing like that. And I saw what
it did for me. I was like, Okay, let's try
the physical out now. So I do the physical stuff,
and you know, after I figured this out and had
the confidence of where I was, I was like, I
kind of want to give back to who I was
in high school and I wish I would have had
this knowledge then. So working with Tea myself, we hosted
(04:39):
our first one in Idaho.
Speaker 3 (04:42):
I think it's Riggings Idaho. We did. I think we
had six guys.
Speaker 2 (04:45):
Three day longer one climbing in mountains and jet boating
and fishing and kind of like obviously I'm in camo
and I wear my Duck Commander hats and just it's
just that's who I am and like my outdoors and
that's where I find a lot of connection. So that
one pretty immersive. But for the Bay Area, you know,
I'm doing a lot of stuff at at city Hall
(05:06):
the mayor. That was one of our initiatives was to
get involved with PD. Well, one of our PD guys,
he's got an offensive line camp. Well, sure enough, he's
got fifteen.
Speaker 3 (05:17):
Guys ready to go. Wanted to give back.
Speaker 2 (05:20):
Obviously, like you said, we dive into mental health, you know,
teaching guys like it's only a perspective. We're not teaching many,
it's just what they're learning about themselves. We show them
the same workouts I did my first day. I couldn't
do two push ups to my fingertips.
Speaker 3 (05:33):
That's how hard these things are.
Speaker 2 (05:35):
And uh, you know, you just show like here's the
deficiencies where you're at, and like you're either gonna do
something about it or not. And you know, that's what
we ran Kerney while we ran Valley Hill with the
guys the same workouts I did, you know. And then
obviously the reason we're there is football. So that's how
we got on there. And it's like, here's this other
side of football. You don't see the mental side of it.
(05:56):
You break them down and show them who they are,
and then you take them out on the field and
teaching the techniques we do right out here on the
practice field. So it was just me giving back to
a fifteen year old Colt mckivts is what I wanted
it to be, and it's exactly what it turned out.
I mean, having the mayor there, I mean been coming
up and helping coach as well, and having a lot
(06:18):
of guys give time cook for us.
Speaker 3 (06:22):
It was huge.
Speaker 2 (06:23):
And I mean working on the streets, I've had multiple
people run next to me while running up the hills.
And obviously in the video you see the one lady
she gives a high five and going lunches with the kids,
like you don't see that.
Speaker 3 (06:34):
That's what's cool about the city of San Francisco.
Speaker 2 (06:37):
And for me to you know, I didn't know coming
from Ohio to California would be and then now being
here obviously six years and really diving into the city,
going up there four to five times a week, you
see what it's about and what the people about and
what it means to everyone. And I mean so they
jumped in and worked out with the kids, and so
for me it was just giving back to a fifteen
(06:57):
year old me and to.
Speaker 3 (06:59):
Be able to do that, so we cool. It's obviously
passion for me and I had a ton of fun
with it. I know they did, so.
Speaker 1 (07:05):
It was so cool. Yeah, I had the privilege of
being there and watching it all go down, and the
kids were so into it and you could see even
when they were getting pushed to the furthest extent. They
were just so honored to be able to learn from you.
How often could a high school, high school kid say
that in an NFL guy came in and trained them
not only on the physical side, but gave them that
(07:27):
really important mental perspective of what it's like and what
it takes to play the game. So really cool, major
props on that. Now, the kids also came out to
training camp and you guys got to see each other
for a bit. What was your favorite part of that experience?
And it's really connecting with these local guys.
Speaker 2 (07:43):
It's cool because like obviously off Trent's just transit the anomaly.
Like he's a silver bag. That's what he is. He's
been here for you know, fourteen fifty, I don't know
how many years he has been League, but like that's
who he is. Like that's like he's known by the world,
but for most of us, like you're not really known.
You got a few family friends or like a guy
you might know, uh from a shop or whatever.
Speaker 3 (08:04):
But like to have a group of.
Speaker 2 (08:07):
High school kids like cheering you on on the sidelines
and like.
Speaker 3 (08:11):
My kids, bards, what's up.
Speaker 2 (08:14):
And it's just the coolest thing ever just to see
that and the support that like you giving them two
days of your time and effort and just being there
for them and like giving them something turns into lifelong fans.
I mean the one we call knee brace because he
had knee braces on but he uh, like he's got
a jersey and have me sign it and everything. But
(08:35):
just to see like those guys and what it means
how much they lit up.
Speaker 3 (08:38):
I mean it made me. It makes me light up
now even thinking about it.
Speaker 2 (08:41):
Like there's fifteen dudes you know her playing in high
school and go through high school. But like I'm the
they're my number one fans. So it's just super cool,
uh and mukes me. I mean obviously giddy, uh to
have those guys, another old Linemen supporting you. So it's uh,
I kind of a dream come true. They got your
little fan base, so it's cool.
Speaker 1 (09:01):
Speaking of the fan base, we took to social media
and had the faithful ask some questions for you. So
these are straight from your fan base. Now, off the top,
if you weren't playing football, what career do you think
you'd be in?
Speaker 2 (09:17):
Well, I went to school for Wildlife and Fisheries management,
West Virginia. I would say I would be in some
sort of pond management and maybe Missouri. Okay, Yeah, I'd
definitely agree with my professor who I had at West Virginia.
We'd be doing something together. But it'd be somewhere in
the outdoor space for sure.
Speaker 3 (09:37):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (09:38):
Really cool. That's where you thrive.
Speaker 3 (09:39):
Yeah, that is. That is my other passion.
Speaker 2 (09:41):
If it's if I'm not on the football field, it
is in the outdoors. Nature, anything to get me outside.
It's a very common place that I found a lot
of peace in.
Speaker 3 (09:51):
So it's cool. It's nature.
Speaker 1 (09:52):
Cool. Well, you are in alignment and you're you're outside
on a field, just on a football stadium with millions
of fans cheering for you. So what's your favorite thing
about being an alignment?
Speaker 3 (10:06):
You can go deep, you can go pretty.
Speaker 2 (10:08):
I mean, the cool thing about being an offensive offensive
lineman I said earlier is you have the responsibility to
protect people.
Speaker 3 (10:16):
That's what you're called to do as.
Speaker 2 (10:17):
A man is protect your family and your wife and
your kids and all that.
Speaker 3 (10:21):
But to be able to be in the one position
where your job is to protect the quarterback, protect the
running back. But it's just such a cool because we
almost celebrate.
Speaker 2 (10:29):
More with our own guys than we do like the
position groups or receivers or running backs when they score touchdowns,
just because like when we put something in the game plan,
it comes together. I remember you celebrating with Feliciano on
a on a touchdown because we picked it up how
we wanted to. So it's just a it's a really
awesome position group to be a part of.
Speaker 3 (10:49):
It's fun. We have a lot of fun.
Speaker 2 (10:50):
We can plan a lot, but we do the job anyways.
It's just it's kind of a cool job to protect people.
Speaker 1 (10:56):
I love it. Now. This question says, what is your
morning routine before a game? So pretty specific on a
game day, but do you have an everyday morning routine?
Speaker 3 (11:06):
Mm? Every day.
Speaker 2 (11:08):
It just depends on who's getting up earlier, Abby or
I who's taking the dogs out? And then well, I'll
stick to game days, so I'll get up, depending if.
Speaker 3 (11:17):
We have a walkthrough or not. I don't know.
Speaker 2 (11:19):
Seven seven thirty is somewhere in there. And then my
pregame meal every since college has been two fil A's with.
Speaker 3 (11:27):
Butter noodles and cheese and that's it.
Speaker 2 (11:30):
And if it's a morning game maybe or a one
o'clock game, maybe a coffee, but it's usually that in
a propel and then that's it.
Speaker 3 (11:37):
I will not straight away from butter noodles to.
Speaker 1 (11:41):
An engine, and that's what gets you going.
Speaker 3 (11:44):
It's just a routine.
Speaker 2 (11:44):
I stick in and find whatever's working, and I stick
to it just because it works.
Speaker 1 (11:50):
So even if you have like a seven am call time,
that's your Oh.
Speaker 3 (11:52):
Yeah, it doesn't matter.
Speaker 2 (11:53):
I mean even for the preseason games we had at
five o'clock we were eating it. We had like breakfast
that morning before walk through.
Speaker 3 (12:00):
Same thing. It's game day. It's two file as and
butter noodles.
Speaker 1 (12:04):
I love it all right. Now, speaking of food, this
question says favorite cheat meal or bait area food spot.
You make your own butter noodles or you have the
staff do it?
Speaker 3 (12:14):
Is there anywhere makes a mean pasta?
Speaker 2 (12:16):
Here Stall is my guy too, he does my breakfastes
bait area spots.
Speaker 3 (12:23):
I would say that.
Speaker 2 (12:26):
China Rose is one of my favorite Chinese spots. If
we're gonna do Chinese, we're going to China Rows. And
then a cheat meal is Starboard. I mean I have
found Starboard and it is It is the best thing,
especially if we're like we don't want to go anywhere
or don't make anything.
Speaker 3 (12:44):
It's starboard immediately.
Speaker 1 (12:45):
It beats Chick fil A and all the other chicken shops.
Speaker 2 (12:48):
Chick fil A is good, but like there's just something
about it, like.
Speaker 3 (12:53):
Chick fil A is chick fil A.
Speaker 2 (12:54):
Like it's certain times you want it and then other
times starboard.
Speaker 1 (12:58):
Yeah, all right, I love it. Now we're rounding out
to the final questions. I gotta tell you there was
a lot here. Let me just list some of them.
Thoughts on Brock party, how much does Colt love Brock?
Favorite memory with Brock? Do you drive the Toyota Brock
got you? So I think they want you to talk
about or you know, maybe your Toyota that he gifted you.
Speaker 2 (13:21):
Yeah, I mean obviously we all love Brock. He's our quarterback,
but also a super awesome friend. He's hunted with me.
We've done commercial shoes with John Deer together, and a tractor,
I mean literally anything you can think of. I think
we might have even fished together. So we've done everything together. Yes,
we do drive Toyota. It is it's a lot of
(13:42):
fun to drive. Actually, for a Toyota, I'm a kind
of a diesel guy. Anyways, so to drive it, you
put in sport mode, A thing goes. But it was
a super awesome gift for your quarterback to give you
a car to your at least it's nuts.
Speaker 3 (13:55):
I mean I don't never guess. I mean it saves
me a car. Favit.
Speaker 1 (13:57):
So thanks Brock, Yeah, thank you Rock. I love it now. Finally,
we talked about this a lot throughout this podcast, but
our final question was from a fan and it says,
any advice for young athletes chasing their dreams.
Speaker 3 (14:11):
It's easier to say than it is to do, but
trusting yourself. There's a lot of self doubt in the world.
There's a lot of doubt in the world just in general.
Speaker 2 (14:20):
But I think once you can begin to trust in
your gut because usually most of the time you are correct,
and even if you're not, you learn from it.
Speaker 3 (14:29):
We all have scars.
Speaker 2 (14:29):
But I think when you start, you know, following other
people what they're saying about you, I think that's when
you kind of get lost and it leads to these
depression or whatever it is, whatever you're a person's fighting.
But believe in yourself. I mean, God put you here
on the earth for a reason.
Speaker 3 (14:45):
So you know why not.
Speaker 2 (14:47):
Opportunities available to everyone, and you know, don't lose that
faith in yourself.
Speaker 1 (14:53):
Beautiful Colton, thank you so much for connecting with the faithful,
for joining us on the podcast. You've got a brand new,
revamped cult in the kivots to start the twenty bucks.
You think you're mentally ready, he's physically ready. So we
can't wait to see you get to work.
Speaker 2 (15:07):
Thank you for having me and I can't wait for
next week
