Speaker 1 (00:03):
Happy Friday, Faithful, Welcome to the forty nine Ers You've
Got Mill podcast presented by Delta Dental. I'm Lindsay Polaris.
For today's episode, we are getting you better acquainted with
the forty nine Ers. Walter Payton NFL Man of the
Year nominee linebacker Curtis Robinson. He was announced as the
team's nominee in early December for the league's most prestigious honor.
(00:23):
The Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award recognizes
players to excel on the field and demonstrate a steadfast
commitment to creating positive impact beyond the game. Robinson is
a regular at the forty nine ers weekly Community Tuesday
events throughout the season, and for a second straight year,
led overall player Volunteerism ours. While Robinson has showed support
(00:45):
to many causes through forty nine Ers Community Tuesday events,
education is a consistent theme in his community efforts. Here
is my one on one with Robinson.
Speaker 2 (00:55):
Curtis, congratulations on your Walter Peyton NFL Man of the Year.
Speaker 3 (00:59):
None.
Speaker 2 (01:00):
I know the news is still pretty fresh. What was
your first reaction to the nomination?
Speaker 4 (01:05):
It caught me off guard, for sure, but it was
super exciting. It's something that I've definitely wanted and it
means a lot coming from this organization specifically, but I
mean for it to happen this year, I know the circumstances,
just me it means the world.
Speaker 2 (01:18):
This nomination is an honor that only thirty two NFL
players across the league. Yet you couple that with the
fact that you're coming from an organization filled with players
that pour into the community.
Speaker 3 (01:29):
What does this say about how the forty nine ers
view your impact?
Speaker 4 (01:32):
I mean, I'm appreciative that they that they view it
in a positive way. Like you said, That's really why
it caught me off guard, because I think there's so
many other guys who are just deserving, if not more,
of the honor, But I think they do value it.
I think I placed a really big importance on the stuff,
especially that the Foundation likes to focus on with education,
empowerment and stuff like that. So for me, it means
the world that they think highly of me.
Speaker 2 (01:54):
For the people that don't know your story, you signed
on to the practice squad in twenty twenty one, earned
a rough spot at the start of the twenty twenty
fourth season. Throughout that whole time. The community service has
been a really big priority for you. Why was that
so important as you're chasing your NFL.
Speaker 3 (02:10):
Dream as well?
Speaker 4 (02:11):
It's just something that's been important to me since I
got here. My mom is a Bay Area native and
grew up loving the Niners in the eighties and nineties.
So for me, once I signed here, it was always
important from the day I stepped in the building to
have a positive impact, whether it was on the field
or off the field, and I kind of found that
niche within the community service. Luckily, we have some good
(02:31):
mentors with Sion Michelle that have really helped me kind
of find my way. But it's always been really important
to me just have a positive impact.
Speaker 2 (02:39):
Even now as you are rehabbing from a season ending injury,
you are a regular.
Speaker 3 (02:43):
At the forty nine ers community Tuesday. You hardly ever miss.
How does that ground you throughout this time?
Speaker 4 (02:49):
It's funny because even after the injury, I didn't really
think about missing. I was disappointed even missing the few
when I was in LA for the surgery, but it's
just something that's been grained me. Now it doesn't it
just seems like that's part of my Tuesday routine, so
it doesn't seem super out of the ordinary for me,
but it has kept me grounded. It's nice to be
around other teammates all the time, especially out of the building,
with the also to be around the people of the
(03:09):
Bay area. I love being a part of this community,
and I've built relationships with people both in the South
Bay and even out in Oakland now and in the city,
so it's cool to be, you know, immersed in their
lives to kind of distract me from my day to day.
Speaker 2 (03:23):
The focus of your community outreach is education and helping
support educators and the students that they serve.
Speaker 3 (03:30):
Why did this cause become a passion for you?
Speaker 4 (03:34):
It's always been really important to me because my mom's
a professor, my dad was a coach most of my
life growing up, and so for me, I always saw
how they were able to give back in that sense
and how important education was to them, and then naturally
just became important to me. And I also saw just
how tirelessly they had to work to give me the
access to resources and opportunities to achieve my dreams, go
(03:56):
to the school I wanted to go to and then
eventually make it here. So for me, being in this
position now, it's really important to use my platform to
help you kids in this area who may not have
the economic background to allow them those resources.
Speaker 3 (04:10):
What's the best thing your mom taught you about giving back?
Speaker 4 (04:13):
It doesn't matter who you can affect, but if you
are able to give one person a chance that allows
them to have the potential to change their life, then
that's really all that matters.
Speaker 2 (04:24):
There's still a lot of chapters yet to be written
about the Curtis Robinson's story.
Speaker 3 (04:28):
But what is the legacy that you hope to build
as an NFL player.
Speaker 4 (04:32):
It's a really good question. I think I would love
to continue to have a really positive impact on the
Bay Area as long as I'm here and wherever I'm at.
But on the field, I just want to continue to
grow as a leader. I think this year I took
a huge step in that realm, and I think that
I can continue to work on that as well. But
I really just want to have a huge positive impact,
both in the locker room and off the field as well.
Speaker 3 (04:52):
Thanks so much, Curtis. I know everyone here at the
forty nine ers is carrying you on.
Speaker 4 (04:56):
Appreciate it.
