Speaker 1 (00:05):
What's up, Faithful, Welcome to the forty nine Ers that
you've got Mail Podcasts presented by Delta Dental.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
I'm Lindsay Flouries.

Speaker 1 (00:12):
Today in studio we have a tight End tandem. Eric
Sabert Jake Tanjis, welcome to the show.

Speaker 3 (00:19):
Thank you, Thank you for having us.

Speaker 1 (00:20):
Both of you guys are new faces to the forty
nine ers at fifty three man roster. How have the
faithful already embraced you five weeks into the season.

Speaker 4 (00:30):
I mean, I think you really see it in the
home games and stuff when we go out for warm ups,
just how excited and crazy all the fans are so
obviously I'm from the area, so I've just gotten as
soon as I figured out that I made the fifty three,
I got, you know, fifty hundred texts just like so
fired up for me.

Speaker 3 (00:47):
So I was really excited about it.

Speaker 5 (00:49):
I mean, you always see the people waiting outside the
gates here for autographs or just to see us, you know,
and that goes a long way. It speaks to the
the level of dedication that the faith will have for
us as players, and we do appreciate that.

Speaker 1 (01:06):
So especially for you, Jake, being a Bay Area native.
Is there anything you've seen on game day that is
a very uniquely Bay Area?

Speaker 4 (01:16):
I mean, I think some of the music they play
just in pregame warm ups and stuff, it's a lot
of Bay Area music and stuff like that. And when
I was at Cal, they played a lot of the
same stuff. So I certainly think that, you know, football
fans in the Bay Area are extremely passionate, especially when
you're winning games. So, I mean, it's been a great
experience so far.

Speaker 1 (01:37):
It doesn't always happen this way, but your Los Gatto's
product played at Cal. Now you get to play for
your pro career here.

Speaker 2 (01:44):
In the Bay. Like, what's that like for your family?

Speaker 4 (01:46):
Yeah, I mean my mom has just been so excited
every step of the way, because I mean I left
for a year and went to Chicago. She was so
and then I got signed back here and my mom
was just you know, over the moon because she got
to get to see more.

Speaker 1 (01:57):
So who was the first person you called when you've
foud out you made that fifty three?

Speaker 4 (02:02):
I think I called my dad and he was with
my mom, So they were just they were over the
moon and they texted all their friends and you know,
all my all my friends, dads and families and stuff,
and everyone.

Speaker 3 (02:13):
Was just super excited.

Speaker 1 (02:14):
I'm gonna put you on the spot here because you
did grow up a Cincinnati Bengals fan. But since you've
made the fifty three, how many of your family members
have you converted?

Speaker 4 (02:23):
Yeah, I mean, I think everyone in the immediate family.
I've converted my brother. I'm still working on a little
bit because he's a pretty passionate, you know, Cincinnati Bengals fan.

Speaker 3 (02:32):
So we're still working on him.

Speaker 4 (02:34):
But he obviously supports me, and he's met all the
guys and stuff, so he's he's really rooting for the
tight end room and he's just wishing the best for us.

Speaker 3 (02:41):
So he's a tough cookie.

Speaker 5 (02:43):
He's though, like he doesn't know anyone on the Bengals.

Speaker 3 (02:46):
That's true, that's true. That No, he we're working on him.
We're working on.

Speaker 2 (02:51):
Him, chipping away, all right.

Speaker 1 (02:52):
Eric, you're a Drake alum played in Iowa at the
same time as George Kittle, were also in the same
draft class. Did you have any relationship with him prior
to coming here.

Speaker 5 (03:02):
Yeah, Yeah, we we met a few times, like through
the draft process. I met at the Combine a little
bit Uh, we kind of just stayed in touch. We'd
game together every now and then, we'd meet up in
Nashville every now and then, and uh, finally year eight
we're on the same team together. So it's been it's
been cool, just kind of regrouping and you know, becoming

(03:25):
better friends.

Speaker 1 (03:26):
Word gets out that you've signed with the Niners. What's
the first communication you have with George?

Speaker 5 (03:31):
With George, I said, I was coming your way, buddy,
can't wait to see you.

Speaker 2 (03:34):
How do you welcome you?

Speaker 5 (03:36):
You know, you know how George is. He's he's almost
friendly and open guys out there, so with with open arms,
I would say, he, Uh, he's been great for me,
he's been great. I think Jake kind of speak said
the same thing for everyone in the room. You know,
he he just embraces you and and helps you and
is all you can ask for in a teammate.

Speaker 1 (03:55):
Both of you have spent time with other organizations. How
does the culture and just overall feel of this team
and tight end room compared to the others you've been
part of.

Speaker 4 (04:06):
I would say, I mean our tight end room, we like,
we have a lot of fun together and we.

Speaker 3 (04:12):
All get along extremely well.

Speaker 4 (04:14):
And coach Flurry is very detail oriented and we get
all of our work done. But I mean, I've said
it before and like this training camp for me, and
like this OTA is leading up to training camp has been.

Speaker 3 (04:25):
The most fun I've had in a tight end room.
So I'm super appreciative of that.

Speaker 5 (04:31):
Yeah, I would echo that this room is great just
to be in, right. We we do have great times,
but we also work. You know, it's a room of
grinders and everyone gets what we're trying to do, what
we're trying to accomplish. So I think that combination just
makes it a special room as a whole.

Speaker 1 (04:47):
How do you strike that balance right taking care of
business on the field, but then you've got a personality
like George Kittle always bring a little fun to the room.

Speaker 4 (04:55):
Yeah, I mean I think it's pretty you know, like
if you have a bad day out there at practice
or something's pretty evid what needs to be fixed, and
I guess, you know, it's just us supporting each other
and you know, through mistakes we've made, pushing each other
to be better. And I think that's something that we
did extremely well for each other.

Speaker 1 (05:12):
Dur in training camp, Eric, You've made a name for
yourself in part because of your blocking abilities.

Speaker 2 (05:17):
When did you hone in on that part of your
skill set?

Speaker 5 (05:21):
I always say that's something that we're always working on.
It's really hard to do at the NFL level. I
got to give credit to, you know, previous coaches, the
coaches here, George I had a mentor in Logan Paulson,
who actually played for the forty nine ers a couple
of years back. So a lot of people. It's been
a culmination of a lot of things. But like I said,

(05:43):
we're always continually continuously improving on that because if you
think you've got to figure it out, someone will humble
you real quick. Like the guys on our defense, they're
really difficult to block. And you could have you know,
quote unquote perfect technique, but they'll expose you. So you
just got to figure out ways to adapt and keep growing.
And that's got to be the mindset.

Speaker 1 (06:02):
One of the things Kittle always says is it's very
fun to pancake successfully pancake block somebody. Do you have
a celebration for when you're able to do that?

Speaker 5 (06:12):
I don't know. I'm just like a big like you'll
see me on a film. I'll hit it like a
flex of me now and then if I'm happy about
the play. I'm not super outspoken, but just your standard,
you know, getting really happy with my teammates.

Speaker 1 (06:24):
Yeah, so Jake, for you, you really showed off your past
catching abilities during the preseason nine for nine, caught every
ball throw in your way. How were you able to
build that chemistry with Brock over the summer.

Speaker 3 (06:36):
I mean, I we really did get it.

Speaker 4 (06:38):
You know, he was here for for all of OTA's
which was really nice. So I mean we've just you know,
run a lot of routes, thrown a lot of balls,
and you know, I just always want to focus on
catching everything that gets thrown my way, just so the
quarterbacks trust me and they feel like it's kind of
like a safety net they can come back to if
they're ever in trouble or anything like that.

Speaker 1 (07:00):
So, off the field, have there been any unique tight
end bonding experiences you guys have been a part of.

Speaker 4 (07:07):
Yeah, we Uh, George took us to Jelly Roll concert.
That was really nice. I think that was like right
after training camp or right right after training camp.

Speaker 3 (07:17):
We had a little time off.

Speaker 4 (07:18):
So George always does a really good job of you know,
getting us together, whether at his house or at a
concert or doing something, and so I was really appreciative
of that, and it was.

Speaker 3 (07:30):
A lot of fun.

Speaker 4 (07:31):
So and he's good friends with Jelly Roll, so we
got to meet him and hang out with him.

Speaker 3 (07:35):
I think they lived near each other or something in Nashville.
But it was a lot of fun.

Speaker 5 (07:40):
Tight End. He was always fun.

Speaker 3 (07:41):
Yeah, I missed it this year.

Speaker 4 (07:44):
I went last year twenty twenty two or twenty twenty three.

Speaker 5 (07:47):
It was a great time and is kind of the
spear ahead of that as well.

Speaker 3 (07:51):
So, yeah, George, he was a little upset with me
that I didn't go this year.

Speaker 1 (07:55):
But what is the meeting of the minds that happens
at tight End? Do you like what trade secrets get
shared or like, what's the best.

Speaker 2 (08:02):
Part of it?

Speaker 4 (08:04):
I mean, I think the best part is, you know,
getting to meet other guys and tight ends that you're
just kind of building your network, right, And then you
also have like guys you've you know when I was there,
like you know, Rob Gronkowski was there, and all these
guys you grew up watching and you get to hear
them talk about, you know, how they see things, And
I thought it was it was super beneficial.

Speaker 5 (08:25):
So yeah, exactly the same. I think for me seeing
teammates I've played with, you know, in the past, and
learning from guys like legends like that, you know, Rob Rucossi,
Greg Olson, it's invaluable in an experience like you wouldn't
get it any other time. So it's really cool that
he does that.

Speaker 1 (08:44):
Obviously, select group of quarterbacks get invited to tight End You.
Is there anyone that you didn't expect to be catching
a pass from?

Speaker 5 (08:52):
Josh Allen? Was there less too?

Speaker 3 (08:53):
Yeah? Josh Allen was there the year I went.

Speaker 4 (08:56):
That was surprising, But then I think everyone else was
Niners quarterbacks for.

Speaker 3 (09:01):
The most part.

Speaker 2 (09:02):
That makes sense.

Speaker 4 (09:04):
It wasn't Brandon Allen, Brandon Allen can this year was
Josh there, Dobbs Doves.

Speaker 5 (09:09):
Who's not there?

Speaker 1 (09:12):
Yeah, I know there's a headliner for tight End You
at the end when it all wraps up. Do you
have a dream headliner you hope to see at a
future tight End University?

Speaker 3 (09:24):
I had, like a performer artists.

Speaker 5 (09:29):
I think travs should bring Taylor Swift.

Speaker 4 (09:31):
Yeah, I mean that seems like the logical, logical conclusion,
but uh, I don't know. Just some of those you know,
country artists out there, maybe like Cody Johnson or something
like that.

Speaker 5 (09:42):
Yeah, I'm just happy to be there.

Speaker 2 (09:45):
I'm just happy to be invited.

Speaker 1 (09:47):
All right. So, since you're both new to the pod,
the second part of this is we have our wonderful,
faithful fan base submit questions for both of you, taylored
specifically for you guys, because we.

Speaker 2 (09:57):
Let them know who's the upcoming guest. So we have
a few.

Speaker 5 (10:01):
All right.

Speaker 1 (10:01):
This is a staff pick. National tight Ends Day is
coming up at the end of the month. How do
you both plan to celebrate.

Speaker 3 (10:09):
Hopefully, I mean, how do we plan to celebrate.

Speaker 4 (10:14):
Touchdowns, touchdowns, big catches, first downs, pancakes, whatever, whatever they
asked us, whatever they ask us to do.

Speaker 5 (10:22):
Just performing at the highest level. That we're going to
pay homage to the holiday.

Speaker 3 (10:28):
And maybe get maybe get a cool T shirt.

Speaker 1 (10:31):
Says it has the shirt designing started.

Speaker 3 (10:34):
I'm not sure. I'm not George hand that handled that,
but yeah.

Speaker 2 (10:38):
I'm all right.

Speaker 1 (10:39):
This one is from John for the both of you.
What's your best George Kittle story?

Speaker 5 (10:46):
I mean recently, like you know, that guy is just
full of stories in himself, but recently we completed the
Warhammer forty K Space Marines campaign Xbox together.

Speaker 2 (11:01):
Please explain what that is.

Speaker 5 (11:03):
That's a that's a video game. And on our off days,
we're spending about like an hour on a mission and
we had a great time just killing hordes of alien zombie.

Speaker 1 (11:17):
This one is from Tyler to Eric.

Speaker 2 (11:20):
Notice you've got a full sleeve.

Speaker 1 (11:22):
What's the story behind the first tattoo and which one
is your favorite?

Speaker 5 (11:27):
Oh man, Okay, first tattoo. We've got a little s
on the back that just stands for my last name.
I think I got that when I was like nineteen.
My favorite tattoo, though, I've got a wolf on my forearm.
It's all been done by the same guy. Shout out
Stanny from Atlanta. But yeah, I know the wolf is sick.

(11:50):
I got an angel on her.

Speaker 3 (11:53):
He has an affinity for wolves.

Speaker 5 (11:55):
I have heard that he always makes fun.

Speaker 2 (11:56):
Of me for your spirit.

Speaker 5 (11:59):
Case.

Speaker 2 (12:01):
When did you decide that?

Speaker 3 (12:06):
I mean he had to be at a young age,
long ago, long ago. He also has a husky, which
is very wolf like dog as he's really reaching.

Speaker 2 (12:17):
Yeah, well, Jake, what is your spirit animal?

Speaker 4 (12:20):
Since I don't know, I don't know, maybe like a beaver,
very resourceful, good with his hand, you know, building things, grinder.
You know, a beaver can take down an entire habitat,
you know, with the dam it can really change the ecosystem.
So they're you know, unassuming but very very powerful animal.

Speaker 2 (12:44):
Underrated spirit animals.

Speaker 1 (12:45):
Okay, this is from Blend and for you Jake as
a by aurial local favorite food spot for breakfast, lunch,
and dinner in the Bay Area.

Speaker 3 (12:56):
Okay, so breakfast.

Speaker 4 (12:59):
Uh, there's a place called called Low Scatto's Cafe and
Lo sc Gattos. There's two locations. They have these big
cinnamon rolls on the weekend lunch. I gotta give a
big shout out to Lo Scautos Meats in the Scattos
it's like a it's like a almost like a butcher deli.
You can take you know, animals there, get them processed

(13:19):
and stuff. But they just make these massive sandwiches and
they're really good.

Speaker 3 (13:25):
Now dinner, you.

Speaker 5 (13:28):
Take animals there, I don't, but you.

Speaker 3 (13:30):
Can see them in there. You can see them hanging
up in there.

Speaker 4 (13:33):
Maybe mckivts to take an animal there. Yeah, if you
hunt something, you can bring it there. I've I've had
friends who who will go hunt with their you know,
on their ranch or whatever and bring a bring a
deer back or something.

Speaker 3 (13:45):
But dinner, that's a tough one.

Speaker 4 (13:48):
I would say my go to is probably Willard Hicks
and in Campbell. It's just just a steakhouse that make
some some pretty good steaks and they've got this baked
breathe that I that I absolutely love and I order
every single time I'm there.

Speaker 3 (14:03):
It's an appetizer. Okay, Yeah, so those are my spots.

Speaker 2 (14:06):
Good recommendations.

Speaker 3 (14:07):
Shout out to Low Scottish Meats.

Speaker 2 (14:09):
Sponsorship right here, Karen for the both of you.

Speaker 1 (14:12):
With flag football becoming an Olympic sport in twenty twenty eight,
is this something you'd consider being a part of most.

Speaker 5 (14:18):
Definitely, I mean, yeah, I'd love to be on that roster,
but we gotta be gotta be realistic here with.

Speaker 4 (14:24):
The I also don't I don't know how that's going
to logistically work out with like training camp and stuff,
which will be interesting to see how that plays out.

Speaker 5 (14:31):
I'll be on the behind the justin Jefferson's of the world.

Speaker 3 (14:35):
Yeah, I imagine George, would you know, take that ticket?

Speaker 1 (14:38):
But is there another Olympic sport you feel that you
could excel in.

Speaker 3 (14:45):
What's the one where.

Speaker 4 (14:48):
Where they like like brush the ground curling and I
feel like I could do.

Speaker 2 (14:53):
That Winter Olympics.

Speaker 3 (14:55):
Yeah, oh my gosh, Yeah, that's crazy. That is is
it in Olympic sport?

Speaker 4 (14:59):
That's Olympics as Summer Olympics?

Speaker 5 (15:03):
Yeah, maybe like javelin or something.

Speaker 2 (15:09):
Just crow hopping underrated as well.

Speaker 1 (15:11):
This one from James to Eric, what is the most
uniquely Iowa thing you learned while at Drake?

Speaker 5 (15:18):
Oh? Uniquely Iowa. That's a great question. I think you
got to give a shout out to Casey's Pizza. Casey's
Breakfast Pizza. It's like a gas station, but they've got
like phenomenal pizza.

Speaker 2 (15:31):
Is this like a BUCkies type?

Speaker 5 (15:32):
It's like kind of like the kind of BUCkies esque,
but uh yeah, no, that pizza is good. So that's
I think the top. I think the Iowa folk would
understand what I'm saying. I think I'm right on that.

Speaker 2 (15:47):
What's on the breakfast pizza?

Speaker 5 (15:49):
I think it's just like sausage and egg and I
can't remember it so long ago.

Speaker 1 (15:54):
Now that you both live here in the Bay Area
in California, what is your in and out order, and
that is from Stephanie.

Speaker 5 (16:03):
All right.

Speaker 4 (16:03):
I usually just go double double grilled onion, animal fry,
chocolate shake, and then one more single cheeseburger with normal onions.

Speaker 3 (16:16):
Specific Yeah, I go.

Speaker 5 (16:18):
Two double doubles no onion, then a shake soft all right.

Speaker 1 (16:24):
Last one this is from Jessica. What is a hidden
talent you possess?

Speaker 2 (16:30):
For both of you?

Speaker 3 (16:34):
I can solve a Rubik's cube in under two minutes.

Speaker 4 (16:37):
It was pretty respectful, pretty respect Me and me and
Ronnie Bell have a you know, we compete a little bit.

Speaker 5 (16:44):
I've never seen Jick do it.

Speaker 3 (16:46):
I tried you.

Speaker 4 (16:49):
Well, I'll just stop by Shelby's office and she has
a Rubik's cube in there, and you know, I'll just
see if I still got it.

Speaker 3 (16:53):
You know, allegedly no one's ever seen it.

Speaker 2 (16:56):
We'll have to time. Just you eric.

Speaker 5 (17:00):
Hit and talent, I think, just being a really great
friend to Jake, he's a line.

Speaker 4 (17:10):
Yeah, he gets on his he'll get on his iPad,
you know, maybe on the plane or something, and he'll
be like photo shopping our heads on the like different things, like.

Speaker 3 (17:18):
Making some making some pretty cool pictures.

Speaker 5 (17:20):
Sometimes. Yeah, we're working on something for the tight end
room to hang up.

Speaker 4 (17:24):
Yeah, he's pretty good graphic he's a good graphic designer.

Speaker 3 (17:29):
Would yeah. Like he actually on the plane, I was
obviously admiring.

Speaker 4 (17:34):
His tattoos, and he's like, well, do you want to
see what you would look like with tattoos?

Speaker 3 (17:38):
So he like edited a photo and edited.

Speaker 4 (17:40):
Like a tattoo sleeve on me, and I was like,
all right, maybe maybe it's not for me.

Speaker 3 (17:44):
It didn't look quite right. And I sent it to
my mom and she's like, don't you do that?

Speaker 1 (17:49):
I thought, great, Yeah, so that's a pretty typical mom reaction. Well,
thank you both for spending the time on the pod today.
I know the faithful are going to enjoy getting to
know the both of you a little better and faithful.
