Speaker 1 (00:07):
Welcome to the forty nine Ers. You've got mil Podcasts
presented by Delta Dental. I'm your host, Lindsay Polaris, Happy
new league year, and faithful. How are we feeling? The
forty nine Ers have been incredibly active in these first
two weeks of free agency, signing twelve new players to
the roster as of Friday, March twenty second. That's all
in addition to a slow of signings that took place

(00:28):
immediately after the end of the twenty twenty three season.
I had the opportunity to sit down with some of
the newest members of the forty nine Ers as they
came through HQ to put pen to paper. There are
a lot of big smiles and excitement from them as
they enjoyed their first day as a member of the organization.
If you want to see pictures and videos of those signings,
make sure to head to forty nine ers dot com
and our YouTube page. As you've probably guessed by now,

(00:52):
this is our free agency recap episode. Our first interview
is with defensive lineman Leonard Floyd. He's a veteran edge
rusher and Super Bowl champion. That's been last season with
the Buffalo Bills. Floyd is familiar with San Francisco because
he played three seasons in the NFC West as part
of the Los Angeles Rams. Here's his first interview as

(01:13):
a member of the Red and Gold.

Speaker 2 (01:14):
Oh it feels good to be here. I'm excited about it,
and it's been all those since.

Speaker 3 (01:20):
I got here, Leonard. In your first message to San Francisco,
you said, San fran I'm giving you my best yet.
What is that best that you're hoping to accomplish with
the forty nine Ers?

Speaker 2 (01:30):
Uh, the best yet, meaning like my best efforts as
far as anything that comes to the game, as far
as showing up earlier to work, get my work done.
Just anything to fit winning. I'm buying into that. I'm
selling out to do anything that pertains to win it.

Speaker 3 (01:48):
You're heading into year nine in the league. You've already
got the Super Bowl ring as you're fielding the offers
in free agency. What made the forty nine Ers the
right fit for you?

Speaker 2 (01:58):
Oh? What made him a right fit? It was because
they are a Super Bowl contended team, and I wanted
to come into a team where I knew I would
have a chance to not only to rush the quarterback,
but also the chance to win the Super Bowl, which
is those MC goal.

Speaker 3 (02:14):
You've already spent three years in the NFC West with
the Rams. In that time, seven meetings with the forty
nine ers. The only win was in that NFC Championship
game during the twenty twenty one season. What's your biggest
takeaway about the on the field product of this team?

Speaker 2 (02:28):
My biggest takeaway from playing them all those time is
this is all It's a team that come out with
guys this violent, physical and just grown man's football. That's
the type of that's the type of energy this ball
club blarance.

Speaker 3 (02:46):
When you look at your resume, one of the first
things that pops off the page. You haven't missed a
game in six seasons. What goes into being available and
healthy year over year?

Speaker 2 (02:57):
I just from something I learned from an old coach.
He always told me the best of the best ability
is availability, So always make sure I tend to my body,
make sure I stay on top of my body and
helps me get the games.

Speaker 3 (03:11):
You're being brought in to be available and help bookend
that defensive line along with twenty twenty two Defensive Player
of the Year Nick Bosa. How will your skill sets
compliment each other in order to wreak havoc on opposing offenses.

Speaker 2 (03:24):
I believe our skill sets will compliment each other. Well,
we both been guys who've been getting sacks in this league,
and I'm just gonna come in, man and do my job,
do my part, and that's to come in and help
them affect the game and get pressure on the quarterback.

Speaker 3 (03:40):
We talked a little bit about this off camera, but
what's your familiarity with Bay Area culture?

Speaker 4 (03:45):
Oh?

Speaker 2 (03:45):
My, the thing almost familiar with it is probably two
Short That's one of my favorite rappers growing up in
e forty.

Speaker 1 (03:54):
Before we meet our next player, a word from our sponsor, Niners.

Malik Collins comes to the Bay by way of trade,
so he's technically not a free agency signing, but certainly
a new face. The forty nine Ers sent the Texans

(04:14):
a seventh thron pick in exchange for Collins. He's entering
year nine of his career and was brought in to
help bolster the interior portion of the d line. He'll
have the opportunity to play alongside a defensive tackle Javon Hargrave. Malik,
unlike the rest of the players that are headed to
the Bay during free agency, you are arriving here via trade.
What was your initial.

Speaker 3 (04:35):
Reaction when you find out you're headed to the forty
nine ers.

Speaker 4 (04:37):
Immediately I was shocked. I didn't really I was like, dang,
they come out of surprise. But you know, it's no
better place for me to be with my skill said
and what this team already brings. I just want to
come in and contribute.

Speaker 3 (04:50):
Take us into that moment.

Speaker 4 (04:52):
What were you doing when you.

Speaker 2 (04:53):
Got the news.

Speaker 4 (04:53):
I was putting my car in part, I was leaving it.
I was leaving Houston Facility. I put my car in
part and I seen Miko call me. You know, he
thanked me fair for my services there, and he said,
I was going to a great organization with great people,
and this is the best situation for me, and I
appreciate it them. I thank him for that. Soon after that,

(05:14):
I start getting calls. My phone started blowing up, and
I booked my flight to get out here.

Speaker 3 (05:21):
Malik, you're a veteran. You're entering year nine, fourth stop
of your NFL career. What's the most exciting part about
that fresh start?

Speaker 4 (05:30):
Just what's been built here, what the GM giant Lynch
has built, what Shanahan has done here with Crystal Shart,
you know, somebody I'm going to play with my whole career.
He did my my pre draft stuff, he did my
pro Dade did my you know, my Top thirty visit.
It just comes for a circle, you know, and I'm
excited to be here, you know, being a Bay.

Speaker 3 (05:52):
A quick look at the tape. A couple of things
that stand out. That explosive first step for you, the
way you command double teams. What's the most important skill
well that you hope to bring to this defensive line?

Speaker 4 (06:02):
Get off the ability to win one on one disrupt
I don't think it's just one skill set. It's just
you gotta come in here and just be yourself.

Speaker 2 (06:11):
You know.

Speaker 4 (06:11):
It's not just bringing one thing. It's enhancing everything and
bringing it all together.

Speaker 3 (06:15):
We spoke about this off camera. You are familiar with
Javon Hargrave. You're gonna have the opportunity to play alongside him.
Think about that.

Speaker 4 (06:23):
I'm excited playing with a player of that caliber. Interior,
the type of respect and the type of command of
attention that he gets. I'm excited for what that might
look like for myself.

Speaker 3 (06:33):
You're coming from Houston to the Bay. What's the first
thing on your California bucket list?

Speaker 4 (06:38):
I grew up on Bay music, so E forty mac Dre.
There's probably some people off right know about like so
like Messi, Marv Mozzi. You know, we grew up around
all that type of music and being influenced by that culture.
So you know, I'm excited to be out here. I'm
excited to be a part of this organization, to be

(06:58):
in the city and impact this commodity any way I can.

Speaker 1 (07:02):
