Speaker 1 (00:05):
Welcome to the forty nine ers that You've got Mail
Podcasts presented by Delta Dental. I'm Lindsay Plaris, and today
we have a dynamic duo in studio, defensive lineman Chase
Young and Nick Bosa. Welcome to the show.

Speaker 2 (00:18):
Thank you, thanks for having us, and.

Speaker 1 (00:20):
You guys your first time first time podcast guests together.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
Correct, first time tandem podcast.

Speaker 1 (00:28):
All right, well we're gonna have some fun today, so
let's just get right to it. You guys have had
nine games on the field together. Now let's do the
mid year review. How has it been playing in the
NFL together compared to your Ohio State days?

Speaker 3 (00:44):
About to say is and I want to say it's
two different. Shoot, still learning, you know from this guy.

Speaker 4 (00:52):
We definitely got a got our college college career cut early.
I had a little injury, so we didn't truly get
to play because the only year we played together was
when I was when he was a freshman and I
was a sophomore. So now that we actually get to
play in a full season together and now we're about

(01:13):
to go in this playoff run, it's really cool.

Speaker 1 (01:16):
I see you guys always talking to each other about
I think past rushing techniques. How great is it to
be able to just lean on each other for that.

Speaker 2 (01:25):
It's good in the NFL.

Speaker 4 (01:27):
Yeah, you're constantly learning, and different players do do things differently,
different body types, different mindsets, and and just hearing from
from a really good player and then him learning from me,
you could always improve.

Speaker 3 (01:45):
Yeah, I mean definitely. I mean, obviously Nick, you know
the top two, you know, number one. You know, it's
I feel blessed with the opportunity just because obviously he
was real good ATL State and I will always pick
his brain. But now, you know, now we're in the NFL,
just hearing the things that he's just learned over you know,

(02:07):
his career being in the NFL, and you know, I
know those things can help me.

Speaker 1 (02:12):
What's the best piece of advice he's shared.

Speaker 5 (02:14):
With you, Chase, I would just say, get off.

Speaker 3 (02:20):
I think that's one thing that Nick always you know,
he says, yeah, you can do this with your hands,
but you know, regardless, if you get off the ball,
you should take care of yourself. So I feel like
that's the biggest, you know, number one thing I try to,
you know, keep on my mind when I'm.

Speaker 5 (02:36):
Out there to get off the ball.

Speaker 1 (02:38):
Nick, you touched upon this, but you guys only got
a season together, a full season, one full season together
at Ohio State. So how does that one season translate
into this long standing friendship that you guys developed.

Speaker 4 (02:51):
I think, you know, when when I was at Ohio State,
I was kind of coming up and coming into my
junior year, I was the guy, and then he came
in right after me, and I was he was kind
of like my little brother coming up. And that's kind
of how it is in college. You spend so much
time together and you look up to the guys ahead

(03:12):
of you, and then obviously I'm gone, and he takes
over and does a lot more great things that Iowa
State than I ever did. So he had an amazing career.
And then we went our separate ways and we're doing
our own things. We both battled some injuries, and so

(03:35):
we have a similar path. And now that this team
has brought us together, I think it's rekindled our friendship
and and I'm just happy to have him.

Speaker 1 (03:47):
Both of you had mentioned that you stayed in touch
over the years in terms of an NFL lifestyle. What
does that mean? You guys shoot each other at text
every now and then did you ever work off in
the work in the off season together.

Speaker 2 (04:01):
We, uh, we would keep in touch a little bit.

Speaker 4 (04:04):
I remember when I got hurt, he gave me a
call and I still remember what he told me and
it came true. So but yeah, I mean life comes
at you and and and we live in different places,
so it's tough. But now that we get to play

(04:25):
together and spend all this time together, it's really cool.

Speaker 5 (04:27):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (04:28):
I feel like in college, you know, when you go
through those gruesome workouts together, you go through camp still
kind of new, you know, that part of our life.
You know, we just get to college. That's our NFL
at the time, so still learning and being in you know,
being in that process, and you know, just being with
each other a lot, and me always you know, picking

(04:50):
his brain here and their action and you know, just
seeing you know, me as a young player coming in
just seeing you know, what is greatness looked like or
you know, would just want to, you know, be the
best look like. That's why you know, around Nick, you know,
just soak up everything I could. And I mean, you know,

(05:10):
definitely when he got hurt, I hit him, but it
was like it's kind of one of those things like
if I don't see Nick for two years, then I
see him one day, then it's like every Kendall's right.

Speaker 5 (05:19):
There, like it's always all Uh So I feel like
that's how it is.

Speaker 1 (05:24):
You both ended up going number two overall in the
draft in your respective years. Was there ever a time
that you let yourself imagine, hey, we might be playing
on the same NFL team one day.

Speaker 3 (05:36):
I would have never I would have ever thought we
would have paid the same thing, especially going number two.

Speaker 4 (05:42):
Yeah, I mean, I'm seeing what he did his junior
year at I have said that was all right.

Speaker 2 (05:49):
The opponents forever.

Speaker 1 (05:53):
So you get the news that Chase has now been
traded to the forty nine ers. What's the first thing
that goes through your mind?

Speaker 4 (06:00):
I think George called me, and uh, I just FaceTime
or did you FaceTime me?

Speaker 5 (06:06):
Everythink you called me?

Speaker 4 (06:07):
I called him and I was just like yes, bro,
But yeah, it was It was weird because I heard
that they might trade him, and I was shocked by it.
But then they treated uh swat but just to be
able to add him and and uh, I'm go on

(06:27):
this run together. It's it's definitely a fairy tale type situation.

Speaker 1 (06:32):
Chase, how is having Nick in this locker room helped
you acclimate that much faster?

Speaker 3 (06:36):
Oh, you know, anything I needed or you know, meeting
room left right. Definitely feels good knowing that somebody I
know that I can just ask you know, not that
if I can ask anybody else, but uh, feel more
comfortable obviously first day in you know, like Nick, we'll
be doing right now basically. Oh and the definitely definitely

(07:00):
hoped and made it a lot easier with me just
coming in.

Speaker 1 (07:04):
As you both sit on this couch, you are very
chill personalities. You see you both out on the field,
total opposite. When does that switch flip for you too?

Speaker 2 (07:16):
I think, I mean right when you go out there,
I'll play like that.

Speaker 5 (07:22):
Morn into the game. It'll start to feel a little more.

Speaker 2 (07:25):
I mean, Chase is a little more bubbly personality than me.
I'd say, you're just a little shy right now.

Speaker 5 (07:32):
I'm just a little tired.

Speaker 1 (07:35):
Well. Kyle Shanahan has said on multiple occasions that you
give speeches.

Speaker 4 (07:40):
Yeah, I mean, once you've been through a lot in
the league, you just have the wisdom and you want
to share it with guys. Because I've been close many times,
and if you feel like if you don't share what's
on your mind, you're doing them a disservice. So Kyle

(08:01):
threw me into that role a couple of years ago,
and I like it because it makes me think throughout.

Speaker 2 (08:07):
The week of what I'm going to tell the team.

Speaker 4 (08:09):
And there's so many weeks in a season that it's
hard to think of some new especially when like you,
maybe you play a huge game against a top opponent
this week and then you have a down kind of week.
You need to be up for every single week to
get to where we want to go. So just finding
different ways to bring the energy. And it's not like

(08:30):
I'm raw ra getting everybody hyped up. I'm just saying
what's on my mind.

Speaker 1 (08:35):
Are you saying it how you're speaking to me now,
or do you get a little bit more hyped? Pretty much,
He's consistent. Chased in your forty nine ers debut, you
found your way to the opening walk out with the
bump box. So where does that come from?

Speaker 2 (08:55):
Didn't take him long.

Speaker 3 (08:56):
Honestly, I just feiled it. I mean, you know, I
didn't want to not be myself coming on to the team.
I had to talk with Eric Armstead. I called him captain.
He was like, yeah, bro, Like when I first got here,
he was like, yeah, Bro. You know, you know, I'm

(09:17):
kind of you know, I don't talk too much on
the field, you know.

Speaker 5 (09:20):
You know Nick, you know, he's kind of just consistent
and playing.

Speaker 3 (09:23):
But he's like, Bro, we need we want your energy,
like we feed off we want feed off of it.
And so he basically gave me the green light. After
he said that, I said, all right, let me just
would just be me.

Speaker 2 (09:35):
I don't know if it's a D Line thing, but
we're pretty chill group.

Speaker 1 (09:39):
We want to give a shout out to Delta Dental,
the podcast sponsor. Here Niners protect your teeth and your

Speaker 4 (09:51):
Having a guy like Chase I talked about that with
Eric too.

Speaker 2 (09:56):
Seasons are long and you do need somebody to bring
the energy.

Speaker 4 (10:01):
And I saw him how he carried himself in Washington
and he was always hyping up the offense, trying to
get everybody going, and I think that's really important.

Speaker 1 (10:13):
So other than Chase, is there another very big Personnellity
in that D Line group or is it just you.

Speaker 3 (10:21):
You get to know Grave is funny, Grave is a
character for real, You get to know all.

Speaker 5 (10:29):
Yeah, I think everybody really chilling her.

Speaker 4 (10:32):
I think playoff chase.

Speaker 1 (10:36):
Different level, be a little edgy.

Speaker 3 (10:40):
Okay, you know, I've never been here before, so it's
kind of like I'm just taking it, you know, day
by day. Obviously it helps when Nick, you know, has
been to the playoffs every year, he's been here all
just really can it's really mental, I feel like, and

(11:01):
just trying to, you know, slow walk your way up
to that first game because you know, we can't be
too hype right now, like you're gonna burn out, like,
you know, So where do I take my mind without
you know, without well still still being locked in, but
you know, still take my mind somewhere, but still not
getting too far out, you know, if that makes.

Speaker 1 (11:20):
Sense, That makes sense. Conserving it, Yeah.

Speaker 5 (11:22):
Just conserving it and what I should do.

Speaker 1 (11:24):
With my time and Nick, for you, you've been a number
one seed before. This is a totally unique experience. However,
with that seed locked up in week seventeen, how different
is this experience?

Speaker 4 (11:37):
Like he said, you don't want to get too high
or too low. You have a week off, but you
also want to stay locked in and it is a
mental thing taking that that step. Just every single play
is so big. And I love the playoffs because any

(11:59):
any so fishness that you have goes away in the playoffs,
Like I want this many stats, I want this that
I want. You just want to get off the field
and get the offensive ball like there's no other because
it's there's selfishness to the sport, like everybody's trying to
put food on the table for their families and make

(12:20):
as much money as they can. And we're obviously a
great team and and you're selfless among the team, but
when the playoffs come around, it's it's just do your job,
get off the field, and move on. And that's what
I love about.

Speaker 1 (12:37):
It from everything this team is said leading up to
the playoffs. So that's really been the selfless mentality that
the forty nine ers have had all year. How rare
is it to be a part of that type of locker.

Speaker 5 (12:49):
Room, right?

Speaker 4 (12:50):
Yeah, we do it pretty much all year, it seems like,
but compare to other teams, like there's so many great
players on this team that you can't try and stand
out and be and be the guy because you'll get humbled.

Speaker 5 (13:07):
So yeah, yeah, definitely be humble.

Speaker 1 (13:12):
Chase for you obviously a first time number one seed,
but also to be going into the playoffs with this
stacked roster. What is that like?

Speaker 3 (13:21):
Man, it's cool and you know, like a coach Shanahan,
he tells us, you know, now everybody's gonna praise us again,
and you know, everybody's so talented and this, this and that.
But at the end of the day, we have to
make ourselves. You know, we have to put that on
the field and you know, actually do it. So I
mean it's I mean, you know, we we have it

(13:41):
on you know, piece of paper. But at the end
of the day, I know I got to play that.
He got the best of my ability.

Speaker 4 (13:50):
Yeah, it's all about the two and a half hours
you're out on that field. No matter what kind of
players you got, you gotta be the best team for
four quarters.

Speaker 1 (14:03):
You guys will have the weekend off. How much of
that weekend are you dedicating to watching football and potentially
your divisional round opponent.

Speaker 5 (14:15):
I mean, I I'll watch some of it.

Speaker 4 (14:18):
It's just nice to watch other people battle while you're not.

Speaker 1 (14:25):
I got you.

Speaker 4 (14:25):
Your body is reproducing cells.

Speaker 1 (14:30):
Very scientific answer there.

Speaker 5 (14:36):
I'll be happy.

Speaker 2 (14:36):
I'll be watching the cells do the job.

Speaker 1 (14:39):
As your cells are replenishing. This is not vacation time.
But what do you guys get to do this week
that you wouldn't on a normal NFL week?

Speaker 3 (14:48):
I think it's a just being able to sit there
and just do nothing.

Speaker 5 (14:55):
The pleasure of just underrated. It'll be just underrated. The
pleasure of just chilling.

Speaker 4 (15:00):
I've been dying to get some reading in and I'm
finally able to do that because I'm not super exhausted.
And then yeah, just feeling fresh out on the practice
field is a good feeling.

Speaker 2 (15:12):
Hasn't liked that in a long time.
