Speaker 1 (00:03):
Hi again everybody on dan Hord and thanks for downloading
the Bengals Booth podcast. The sign your name across my
addition as we get reactions to Shamar Stewart being under
contract and on the practice field, plus a one on
one visit with Chase Brown and a look at the

(00:23):
first week of training camp with Bengals dot Com editor
Jeff Butch Hobson. The Bengals Booth Podcast is brought to
you by pay Corp, proud to be the Bengals official
HR software provider, by Alta Fiber future proof fiber Internet
design to elevate your home, business and community to a
new level, and by Kettering Health the best care for

(00:43):
the best fans. Kettering Health is the official healthcare provider
of the Bengals. Now here's a quick reminder that you
can have the latest edition of this podcast delivered right
to your phone, tablet, or computer by subscribing wherever you
get your podcasts. It's the greatest thing since the smell
of freshly made bread. I was driving through Norwood recently

(01:07):
when my nostrils detected the unmistakable aroma of fresh bread.
It brought back memories of when I lived in Syracuse,
New York. There's a place there called Columbus Baking Company
that makes Italian bread, and it might be the single
best smelling thing on the face of the earth. I'm
going to be back in Syracuse for an event in

(01:29):
a few weeks, and I might have to capture the
audio for this podcast of me walking into the Columbus
Baking Company and taking a deep, satisfying sniff. Ah. Now,
let's get to football. Moments after the Bengals selected Shamar

(01:49):
Stewart with a seventeenth pick in the draft, Al Golden
gushed over his elite physical traits and said he's a
young man that we're really looking forward to working with.
While he had him in defensive meetings during the off
season program, Golden never had the opportunity to work with
Shamar on the field, and when training camp opened this

(02:10):
week and Stuart still wasn't practicing, the team's new defensive
coordinator sounded concerned. I just feel like, you know, I'm
on hold right now. You know, I can't.

Speaker 2 (02:19):
I can't.

Speaker 3 (02:20):
I can't give him that wisdom or that experience of
those gifts. And at the end of the day, you know,
that's business, and obviously that's between his camp and and
and upstairs. But it doesn't, it doesn't doesn't make it easier.
You know, I want to work with him. I want
to help him be the best he can be and

(02:41):
make the greatest impact that he can make. And obviously
the sooner the better for that.

Speaker 1 (02:44):
Thankfully, the weight ended after just three practices. After a lengthy,
ended times acrimonious negotiation between the Bengals and the agent
for Stuart, the team's first round pick, signed a four
year contract on Saturday that includes a fifth year option,
and while it wasn't easy, Chamar says, there are no
hard feelings. End of the day, I'm happy to be

(03:06):
in Bengal.

Speaker 4 (03:06):
I'm I'm happy that I got driving here.

Speaker 3 (03:09):
You know, we have a long relationship ahead of us.

Speaker 1 (03:12):
You know, there's no bad blood. You know, this is
how things go sometimes. When Stewart walked onto the practice
field on Sunday, he was immediately greeted by defensive line
coach Jerry Montgomery for some one on one tutoring.

Speaker 2 (03:25):
Very hands on, I'll tell him, not very hands on.

Speaker 5 (03:27):
You don't let nothing slide.

Speaker 1 (03:28):
If you don't like something, you're doing it again, no.

Speaker 4 (03:30):
Matter how many times you messing up, you're doing it
over again.

Speaker 1 (03:33):
It's no secret that Chamar didn't have many sacks in
his college career four and a half to be exact,
in three years at Texas A and M. But Montgomery says,
too many people fixate on what Chamar didn't do well
and ignore where he excelled.

Speaker 6 (03:49):
We're literally talking about him missing sacks, right, But the
guy is violent in the run game. He affects the
quarterback at a high rate.

Speaker 7 (04:01):
When I say affected, he's back there right, first year playing,
truly starting, so he's just got to learn how to finish.
But more importantly, he's beating up on tight ends. He
is destroying tackles, run and pass. His effort and play
style is phenomenal. Like his effort to the ball is

(04:24):
he leaps? Okay? Now, like I told everybody, if he
affected the quarterback, meaning he got him off the spot,
or he had hits the balls out, are he scrambled
already missed some opportunities. But if he just finishes on
let's just say he gets I don't know, you call

(04:45):
it six seven sacks, you know what, He's not a
Cincinnati bank.

Speaker 1 (04:49):
In other words, Montgomery believes that Stuart would have been
gone before pick number seventeen. Jerry compares Chamar to a
first round pick he coached in Green Bay, John Gary,
who went to his first Pro Bowl last year.

Speaker 7 (05:03):
You know, he had all the trades, but he had
he had good pressure productions, but he didn't have the
sac production. Well, he gets to the league, he gets goos.

Speaker 6 (05:14):
Up, he's on an edge more than he's been in college.

Speaker 2 (05:19):
And then all of a sudden.

Speaker 8 (05:20):
He he has to productions, the No Po Bowl, those
type of things. So but again, like I said, if
he had the numbers would have been long gone. I'm
saying top five.

Speaker 7 (05:35):
He was by far the most explosive player in the draft.

Speaker 1 (05:39):
Would it have been nice for Stuart to take part
in every OTA mini camp and practice so far? Of course,
but he still has roughly forty days in three preseason
games to get ready for the regular season opener in Cleveland.
Here's Zach Taylor and what he's looking for from the
twenty one year old rookie.

Speaker 9 (05:58):
Improve every day. You know, just like any rookie, be
a consistent guy. Don't make the same mistake twice. We
know that there's gonna be some mistakes. There's gonna be
some some installed overloads early on in the process. It's
just making sure, Okay, I made a mistake on this,
I'm gonna make church corrective. I'm better there, and then
you know, plug the lead as it occurs somewhere else.
So again, he's got plenty of time, you know. It's

(06:21):
it's great to get him now when we can, because
we haven't even put pads.

Speaker 1 (06:23):
On, put pins on tomorrow.

Speaker 9 (06:24):
He's got seven practice perfor coplate Ullys, and there's play
a time to get him out.

Speaker 1 (06:28):
Of Nobody in the building knows Chamar better than his
former college teammate and close friend mckin lee Jackson, who
says the six foot five, two hundred and seventy pound
defensive end with four five three speed and a forty
inch vertical leap will have a major impact.

Speaker 4 (06:46):
He's a special guy. Pus a person out of background.
I see he came from, and I know where you
can go. I know what he can do for this team.
Like I said, he's really specially do like a walking transformer.

Speaker 1 (06:57):
He's like a unit.

Speaker 4 (06:58):
So and the thing is, I've seen that by that
if he is at eighteen, I mean it was crazy then,
but it's crazy nine. Its form more emotional. You know,
he's dangerous on the field, so you know, I'm just
I'm excited for him. Man, I got high to take
this for him, and I said, I'm gonna set the
ball high for him, and I'm gonna pushaby they to
who's their standard, you know, Like I'm saying, I'm more
excited for the other guys to see what's gonna happen

(07:19):
with him, because I've already seen it. Observe guy I
pushed a lot out of I mean, he was always
that they quick, the fast, like to get out the
ball type of guy. We had to push him to
this to be what he is now. Hey, you know,
I said, I'm really proud of what he came.

Speaker 1 (07:33):
The Bengals hold their first fully padded practice on Monday morning,
and I can't wait to see Stewart line up against
the Marius Mems and Orlando Brown Junior in one on
one pass rush drills. Now, let's hear from my next guest.
In his first game following an injury to Zach Moss
last year, Chase Brown had twenty seven carries for one

(07:55):
hundred and twenty yards and five catches for thirty seven more.
From that until the end of the year, he was
one of the NFL's most productive backs. Now, heading into
his third season, Chase is clearly number one on the
depth chart and expected to be one of Cincinnati's top
offensive weapons. I caught up with him one on one

(08:15):
this week. Chase, it certainly sounds like you are going
to have an increased workload this year. Did you adjust
your offseason in any way to prepare for the likelihood
of that?

Speaker 10 (08:26):
Every single offseason I go really hard, So no, not really.
I come in every single year expecting to earn a role,
you know what I mean, expecting to prove myself over again.

Speaker 5 (08:37):
And that's my mindset this year.

Speaker 10 (08:39):
And you know, coming into this year with you know,
as a starter, as a more established player, I'm just
looking to build on what I did last year and
helped this Upunians.

Speaker 1 (08:48):
A heavy workload would not be unusual for you. Going
back to your last year in Illinois, you had thirty
five or more touches in five different games. You have
forty one carries in one. Yeah, pare you for the
possibility of having a huge workload?

Speaker 10 (09:03):
Yeah, I mean, I guess you could say that I
was a workhorse in college and I can do it
in the NFL too, except now I'm a more dynamic player.
You know, my ability to run rows, my ability to
catch the ball, my ability to make plays and make
big plays is completely different than what it was in college.
So that's why I'm bringing to the team this year
is just my explosive ability and that home running, home

(09:24):
run hitting ability to.

Speaker 5 (09:26):
You know, put that ball and ends on any time.

Speaker 1 (09:28):
That game where you had forty one carries, I think
you also had four catches, What did you feel like
the next day?

Speaker 5 (09:35):
You know what I really Wasn't that sore? I mean,
I took care of my body in college, and I
take even more care.

Speaker 1 (09:43):
But now so.

Speaker 5 (09:45):
Heavy workload, you know, doesn't you know. I'm not going
to shy away from that anyway.

Speaker 10 (09:49):
I just take the responsibility to take better care of
my body, invest in my body, and I'll be just going.

Speaker 1 (09:55):
We're visiting with Chase Brown. You and andre Yosi Bosh
spend a lot of time together before practice, doing drills
things like that. Describe your relationship with him, because it
seems like at times you two guys are almost inseparable.

Speaker 5 (10:07):
Yeah, I mean, we look for ways to better ourselves
every single day.

Speaker 10 (10:11):
Andandre and I connected and got really close in Atlanta
and does all the work that we put.

Speaker 5 (10:16):
In out there with our coach Drew.

Speaker 10 (10:19):
You know, that's uh that's time that really allowed us
to get to know each other, uh, get to know
how to push each other and uh honestly trying to
out do one another. We're we're both extremely competitive and
we're both trying to you know, you know, continue to
you know, increase our role in you.

Speaker 5 (10:35):
Know, such an explosive offense.

Speaker 1 (10:38):
I feel like maybe people are sleeping on him a
little bit. Do you feel the same way?

Speaker 5 (10:41):
Definitely. I mean Andre is capable of doing everything, but
you know, he's behind two superstar receivers, so I mean,
being a three in this offense is you know, that's
a pretty big deal. So, you know, I'm just proud
of him.

Speaker 10 (10:57):
And you know, his mentality that he brings to practice
every single day and his mentality of you know, trying
to get better on a daily basis is honestly on
like nobody else.

Speaker 5 (11:07):
So I'm excited for him and what he's about to
do this year.

Speaker 1 (11:10):
A week or two ago, Eagles got their Super Bowl rings,
including your twin brothers, Sidney. Yes, I know you love him.
I know you're thrilled for him. Are you a little
bit jealous?

Speaker 5 (11:19):
I no, No, I don't. I don't. You know, I
don't envy him in that way at all. I'm proud
of him. Honestly.

Speaker 10 (11:26):
He worked hard for that, the team earned that, and
you know, now it's our turn to go get ours.
So that's kind of how I'm thinking about it.

Speaker 1 (11:32):
So during this time of year, you guys are in
the building for eleven hours a day, whatever it is,
and you've got a six month old son. How are
you connecting with him during training camp?

Speaker 5 (11:45):
Honestly? Yeah, the honest answer is in not that much.

Speaker 10 (11:49):
He's to sleep in the mornings and when I get home,
he's pretty much going to bed. So I'm trying to
do as much as I can to help and make
sure even though I'm not there, I'm still present.

Speaker 5 (11:58):
And you know what's so great about my support system
at home is they understood. You know, my girlfriend, she understands,
you know, what what I'm going through and.

Speaker 10 (12:08):
How important camp is for not only myself but for
this team. So she's you know, taking out a big role.
But you know, we got a you know, our baby,
Sarah the babysitter Sarah, that's helping us on a daily
basis and allowing her to go to her own things.
So just grateful for my support system at home and
making sure that my little man is taken care of.

Speaker 1 (12:28):
How many people yell out to you, I've got you
on my fantasy team on a regular basis A lot.

Speaker 11 (12:33):
I mean on social media, whether I'm you know, getting
a smoothie somewhere or I'm trying to, you know, go
find some new clothes or something, and people always saying
something to me about fantasy football.

Speaker 5 (12:44):
So I guess. I guess people are drafting me this year.

Speaker 1 (12:49):
No doubt. Is it flattering or in some ways uncomfortable.

Speaker 10 (12:52):
No, not uncomfortable at all. I'm trying to embrace it, honestly.
I mean, made a lot of plays last year. I'm
under the same thing this year.

Speaker 1 (12:59):
So last thing for Chase Brown, Dan Pitcher said recently
that you are a top ten back in the NFL.
I assume you heard that or saw that. What did
you think? And is he selling you low?

Speaker 5 (13:11):
Selling me low?

Speaker 1 (13:12):
Yeah? Should it be? He's a top five bat?

Speaker 5 (13:13):
No, I appreciate him, you know, I think extremely high.

Speaker 10 (13:17):
Coach Pitcher and everything that he does with this offense,
and you know, just grateful that you know, he's uh,
you know, making me a big part of you.

Speaker 5 (13:26):
Know, what we're doing here. I'm doing everything i can
to you know, help this offense be more explosive.

Speaker 10 (13:32):
So just grateful that he trusts me, trust my playmaking ability,
and we're just going to continue to grow. But I mean,
I'm not even paying attention to you know, top ten.

Speaker 5 (13:41):
This top ten n I'm just gonna go out there.
I'm going to play, take.

Speaker 10 (13:44):
It one game at a time and we'll see at
the end of the season. A lot of those rankings,
I mean, a lot of its hype, so you know
what I mean. The Chase Brown name is just it's
just starting to get big. So we're just gonna keep
on building that up. And you ask me that same
question and then end of the.

Speaker 1 (14:00):
Season, consider it done. Appreciate your time to have a
healthy camp in a great season.

Speaker 2 (14:04):
Thank you.

Speaker 1 (14:05):
Before an in depth look at the first week of camp,
here's a quick reminder that the Bengals Booth podcast is
brought to you by pay Corps, proud to be the
Bengals official HR software provider by Alta Fiber future proof
fiber internet designed elevate your home, business and community to
a new level and by Kettering Health the best care
for the best fans. Kettering Health is the official healthcare

(14:27):
provider of the Bengals. Now time to look at the
first few days of camp with Bengals dot Com editor
Jeff Butch Hobson Butch, what is your number one takeaway
after the first four practices of Bengals training camp.

Speaker 2 (14:43):
I love morning practices and I think the players do too.
After that, I would say they got to be pretty
happy with this bookie class. I mean the two guys
that have sitt out to me right away, to the
linebackers to meet you, Snighte and Barrett Catter. I think
the running back Taj Rooks has looked impressive anytime he's

(15:03):
touched it. And we'll find out about Fairchild their third
round and we'll find out about that pretty quick. But
you know, and Schimar just came in and you know,
so we'll get a beat on him. But right now,
my takeaways number forty four Demetrius Knight, They're going to
be happy they drifted them.

Speaker 1 (15:22):
I think my biggest takeaway so far is that Al
Golden was the tremendous higher and we thought it, but
now we're seeing it. Got to keep in mind every
day how good this offense is. So anytime the defense
has what is considered to be a win, or in
the case of today, like half a win, that says
a lot about Al Gold And I think he's the

(15:44):
ultimate attention to detail guy. I think the players are
buying in. There's an enthusiasm on that side of the
ball I haven't seen in a while. I feel very
confident in thinking. And maybe this is stupid to say
after four practices that the Bengals at worst are going
to be a middle of the pack defense instead of,
you know, near the bottom of the pack.

Speaker 2 (16:05):
If the middle of the pack, we're all smoking cigars, right,
I mean, I think the you know. I compared it
to Mike zimmers Higher. Two different guys, two different systems,
but both highly regarded defensive coordinators who have been asked
to come in and steady the ship for a great offense.
I think back to two thousand and eight, zimmer inherited

(16:28):
a bunch of nameless guys, had finished twenty seventh. They
didn't make many additions into eight, and they went from
twenty seventh to like twelfth, and then next year after
that they went forth and they started going to playoffs
with when they had quarterbacks like Carson Palmer and Andy Dalton.

(16:48):
They started going to the playoffs with competent defenses. I
kind of compare that to this, and you know, but
except we're talking about the best offense in a national
football league, whereas, like you know, back in the Zimmer era,
it was it was a good offense, but it wasn't this.

Speaker 1 (17:04):
Yeah, yeah, all right. You named some of the rookies
as guys that have caught your eyes so far, but
how about in general, who are some of the players
that have really stood out to you?

Speaker 7 (17:15):
Well?

Speaker 2 (17:15):
I thought a guy today at the end of the
the last the last rep of the day is rain
began to fall. Didn't that feel nice? TJ. Slayton made
it really had a real good pressure inside. They were
on goal line, and I put just enough pressure on
Brow to force and in completion and those were few
and five between because Joe was hot all day. But
to your point about Al Golden, you know, Joe sifted,

(17:40):
shifted all day and then when they started going at
the eleven and low red zone and then on goal line,
they stiffened up and the guys were hired to come by.
But I think t J. Slaton Slayton, you can feel
the difference that he provides. And maybe it's just because
he's wearing a DJ Readers number. I don't know, but
there hasn't been a guy like that since DJ Reader

(18:01):
and he's a presence. You've felt it, You've seen it,
and I think you felt it today when it went
go on.

Speaker 1 (18:07):
Badly needed and so far doing exactly what they need
him to do. I've got a few guys, most of
them are on defense. Cam Taylor Britt didn't do much today.
I don't know if you know the GPS suggested that
he needed a day of rest or what it is.
But in any case, I think he's been terrific so
far in camp. Logan Wilson looks healthy and frisky and

(18:29):
you know, the perfect guy to run Golden system. Fig
Newton I think has been impressive. I'm really impressed by
watching his leadership. I remember in the offseason Chuck Burks
called him the heartbeat of the defense and I tweeted
that and got some pushback from people thinking that that

(18:50):
was somehow a knock on the other guys when it's not.
He's just one of those guys. I don't think there's
anybody on the team that encourages his teammates more than
that guy does. So I love that. And then money Mack,
money Mac looks like Moneymack again. He hasn't missed the
kick yet. He's gone back to the way he kicked
it as a rookie with a slight draw, so it

(19:11):
kind of starts out towards the right, upright and winds
up right in the middle. Looks great.

Speaker 2 (19:15):
If that's what he did his rookie year, keep doing it,
I think. And I guess maybe that was the kick
against Green Bay when he had the draw and he
thought he had stuck it in and made it to
beat the Packers, but it didn't. But Aaron Rodgers was
the quarterback that day. Maybe he'll stick it when Aaron
Rodgers was the quarterback of the Steelers and beat itim.
But yeah, you know, getting back the fig. I talked

(19:36):
with his family a little bit his rookie year. He's
an interesting guy. He he's the guy that speaks at
that speaks at the family gatherings, you know, big family
growing up in Louisiana and he's the guy they choose
and he's just an outgoing guy, very personable, and I
think that's exactly And Chuck's an interesting guy too, because

(19:58):
I think Chuck quietly done a great job. If you
take a look at that secondary, those are all the
guys that have been here since he's been here. I
think only Jalen Davis uh is here from that Super
Bowl secondary. Everybody else has been drafted or signed when
Chuck is here, and uh, you know, I think they've clearly.
I think this camp, we've seen their depth. I actually

(20:20):
talked to said something that Chuck today. I said, the
way you guys are playing reminds me of your first
camp And you remember when that's when a Woozier was
playing at a very high Pro Bowl level and Eli
Apple was all over the place. So Mike Hilton was
was was sticking with people. I kind of get that
vibe vibe with this group, you know, And it was
interesting that although you could see camp wasn't out there

(20:42):
because Joe Joe had his way. But then you know,
it's hard to uh, it's kind of get on the
DBS when seven on seven is a year for the
offense anyway, and that just isn't a quarterback over there
that's accuably the best quarterback in a game. With all
due respect to Patrick Mahomes, you know, I think Joe
was probably better than five more categories. So if you're

(21:05):
talking about pure you know, pure statistical by the position,
that's the guy. And so but you know, it's like
talking to Lemonta Parish the other day when he went
into the Ring of honor, the best, the best receivers
he faced, where Isaac Curtis and Charlie Joyner, those were
those are the best guys that he faced in his career,
he said, And may help them practice. And I think

(21:25):
the DB's you know a game is going to be
at the d at the beach after facing this guy.

Speaker 1 (21:30):
It's so true. There was a pass early in practice
today Burrow to Tea. He wasn't really open, but the
pass was that good and t is so big and
his catch radius is so crazy that even if the
coverage is as good as it can be, those guys
are so freaking good that they complete the pass anyway.

Speaker 2 (21:49):
I mean, he he burrowed just kind of shoulder fake
or whatever, just looked at Jamaira in the flat and
just shot it to Giseki, you know. And then on
another play he looks somebody else off and it was
and it was Jama, you know, down the scenam and
you're thinking, man, this is almost like it's almost like

(22:10):
a video game, you know. So but that's this is
this is training camp, right, Hoary. I mean, everybody's winning
the Super Bowl, and everybody's the first first offense, the
number one ranked offense.

Speaker 1 (22:22):
Maybe not the Browns. Have there been any pleasant surprises
so far? In your mind?

Speaker 2 (22:27):
There's one guy said to me who I trust, implicitly
said it's a little too early for surprises. But I
will say, uh, and I don't think McPherson is a surprise.
I thought he would come you know, I thought he'd
come out looked, you know, just I figured he'd do
what he does, going and just and tweak and put
himself in a garage. And he's done that. I think

(22:47):
what I kind of like to see a little bit
is the Jermaine Burton. You know, I think he really
he's you know, he looks like he's should have looked
coming out last year. But I think this is a
guy that he's just you know, he's been through what
I talked to Browning about this a little bit, and
his head's not spinning. He's been through a year, and

(23:10):
I guess you got to just kind of put yourself
in your own shoes, you know. Coming out of college,
you know, I couldn't tie my shoes. You know, I
think in a couple of years.

Speaker 1 (23:18):
I'm looking down at your shoes now to make sure
he can. Now.

Speaker 2 (23:20):
Yeah, well up the debate. Uh these uh, these these
what do they call him scratchers?

Speaker 1 (23:27):
What do they call him sketchers?

Speaker 2 (23:28):
Sketchers? Yeah, I probably got to get some of those.
I probably probably should have had them when I was
twenty two. But you can tell Burton seems to be
you know, he's he's caught everything thrown at him, so
you don't see him screwing up an assignment, you know.
So I think that, I mean, if he's if he's
the guy they thought he was when I draft him,
I mean, you know, they're gonna have to have they're
gonna have to pass a rule at the next meeting

(23:50):
about being able to use three footballs.

Speaker 1 (23:54):
And as as exciting as the prospect is of him
being you know that the player with first round talent.
Putting it all together, it kind of makes people forget
about Yosi Vash how good he is and what he's
going to contribute to the team this year.

Speaker 2 (24:10):
I mean, he he's he looks as good as he
did as he looked. I mean, I think he bulked up,
he bulked up in the spring, and he still looks
he still looks good. I mean, it's just a matter
of and And we talked about this and he said, look,
I'm not going to get I'm not going to.

Speaker 1 (24:27):
Get the opportunities.

Speaker 2 (24:28):
I'm not going to get you know, Jamais, Jamais here,
Teas here, Mike Kiseki's here. I'm not going to get
the opportunities. But when I get them, I have to catch,
you know, I have to. I got to be reliable.

Speaker 1 (24:41):
And I think that's what.

Speaker 2 (24:42):
He's focusing on, is just doing the right things and
being the guy who you know that Joe can always
turn to, which I think, you know, that's kind of
was Koseki last year, but I think Andre kind of
took that role. So, you know, here's the guy you
get the two playmakers. But if you get in a
jam and you need a play you know, I think
Yoshi has kind of grown into that and now he's

(25:03):
gonna have I was kidding with him, I said, you know,
fifty catches, and then we started thinking, well, you know,
that's a lot. I mean, Jamais coming off one hundred
and twenty seven. You know, he was hurting, still.

Speaker 1 (25:14):
Caught a lot of balls.

Speaker 2 (25:15):
He's gonna play seventeen games. So I think it's just
a matter of you know, Joe Burrow says it, everybody's
gonna have their game, and it certainly looks like Yoshi is.
Looks like he's got a few of them.

Speaker 1 (25:29):
What's the biggest position battle?

Speaker 2 (25:32):
That's a great question. I think I think Dax Sill's
your slock guy once he gets back from his ACL
and they really today he was his first shot in team.
A couple of snaps they've been, but they really been
kind of taking it ease with him. But I think
I think he's I don't think there's a battle there.
I think I think Hills your slot guy. You know,
it's it's got to be the right guy. See that's

(25:54):
a that's a really good battle with Cody Ford and
uh Lucas Patrick, two good veterans. Patrick is wasn't practicing.

Speaker 1 (26:02):
It looks like I think nothing serious.

Speaker 2 (26:04):
I'm told yeah, that's what Zach said a couple of days.
But you know, he's a great veteran who started a
fifty eight games in this decade for three different teams,
started opening day for three different teams, been around, knows
the game. Same thing with Cody. Cody saved it butt
last year. Uh not at right, gad, but it everywhere else.
And uh, you know, so he's proven to be a
formal guy. So that's a really that's a really big

(26:26):
that's a really big battle to watch.

Speaker 1 (26:28):
So let's get back to tax Hill for a moment.
They're obviously working him back in slowly. He was cleared
for the start of training camp, but coming off in ACL,
he's not, you know, running out there on every single
eleven on eleven snap, seven on seven. It's lined up
a few times in the slot, took part in some
eleven on eleven stuff today. Do you think that that
decision has been made that he is going to be

(26:52):
the starting slot corner or is there still a world
where fake Newton ultimately is that guy and Dax started
on the outside where he played so well last year.

Speaker 2 (27:02):
Boy, you know it sure looks like he's the slot
guy because like anytime they've had him.

Speaker 1 (27:07):
Out there, but it's been so few snaps, right right, right.

Speaker 2 (27:09):
But that's where he's been, you know, So I mean
Figures lined up on a slot a lot. I mean
he's getting a lot of those the snaps that Dax
doesn't get. Fig gets, and uh so, you know, you're
you're right, it is haired to see it. But I
don't think they had made a decision. I mean I
think they I mean, to me, Dax is a slot
guy because that's where they've put him. And I think

(27:31):
but I think they feel pretty comfortable with fig And
which is big because remember this is you know, Mike
Hilton just signed to Miami yesterday, so you got to
remember what he did for this team for four years.
So the fact that they've got two guys that really
feel comfortable and we haven't even talked about Jayalen Davis,
who you know, has always been here, hasn't played a
hell of a lot, but he's but he's always here

(27:52):
in the practice squadad or you know, he looks he's
looks like he's having a good camp again today. So
to me, the one thing about this This thing that
we're seeing is the depth, the depth of cornerback. I mean,
that's the hell of the corner room.

Speaker 1 (28:04):
It's a hell of a corner room. Dj Ivy got
a bunch of snaps with the ones today because Cam
wasn't doing as much. And he looks like a guy
that if pressed into service, wouldn't kill you.

Speaker 2 (28:15):
And he has. He was pressed into service last year.
I mean he was covering some he and uh uh
he and Marco uh, Marco Wilson were taking a lot
of Keith snaps last year during that five game winning streak.

Speaker 1 (28:28):
And Ivyes, he's rangy.

Speaker 2 (28:30):
You know, he can run, he's got the he's got
the long arms. I mean, uh, you know, like I said,
they're there. You know, it could be hard to cut
that room, but they've got And like I said, that's
something to be said about Chuck because he's developed every
one of those guys. I remember, he's told me one
of these he goes. I've watched at least three times
all these guys walk on the field, you know, whatever

(28:51):
they've done. So I think he's got this is again continuity.
And I think Al feels comfortable too. I think with
him and Joy in Kovacs because we haven't even talked
about the safeties yet. Probably the most bellagued unit, probably
the most criticized unit of last year, and they didn't
make a change, which is that was the surprising to

(29:11):
me about the offseason was no moves is safety, no
veteran safety. But I think and we've seen why, you know,
we've seen why al likes Gino. Smart guy can Blitz
has obviously enough ball skills. He led the AFC in
interceptions once battle. We know he's part in the pun

(29:33):
battle tested all but sixty games at Alabama. That's why
they're drafted him. So and I think they've played. I
think they've played pretty well. But to me, it shows
the continuity. You've changed the defense with Golden, but yet
to have Kovacs and Burkes the same position, coaches, guys
who Kovacs as a guy who is Golden's assistant linebackers

(29:55):
coach when he was here, when Gal was here the
first time. So that the kind of stuff to the
kind of continuity that that winning programs have.

Speaker 1 (30:06):
I asked you for a pleasant surprise and I didn't
give one, but you just talked about him. It's been
Geno Stone to me, Uh, he wasn't very good last
year they cut his contract, but he's been good in
camp so far. There's been a pass break up every day.
There was the perfectly timed blitz that got so much
attention at the first practice. I'm I'm encouraged by what

(30:30):
I've seen so far from Geno Stone. I think this
version of him is why they signed him prior to
last year.

Speaker 2 (30:36):
Yeah, right, smart guy, get you lined up? Uh and
I and and also too. Uh, I guess we'll you know,
the minute the pads come on. You know, he's gonna
have to tackle. I mean, he he's talked about that
openly that he didn't have the kind you know, he
missed a lot of tackles last year. Can't do that
and uh so I I think that, Uh yeah, I mean,

(30:56):
first four days, guys that they need veterans. They need
the two veterans that they needed to step up and
play Moneymack and Stone have they have. They have stepped up.

Speaker 1 (31:09):
So the Shamar Stewart drama is over. Signed on the
dotted line yesterday, practiced for the first time today. He
missed three days of training camp. He was in the
meetings but wasn't on the field. During the OTAs and
the mini camps prior to training camp. In the end,
how significant was what he missed?

Speaker 2 (31:30):
I'm sure this is why Carrie Hobson is listening in
with THEO and Freddie Shamara's lot I get, got a
lot of ink, got a lot of attention. I think
what people forgot was that most athletic defensive linemen in
the draft in the last forty years or so, and
now they've got a chance.

Speaker 1 (31:51):
Well you better include Miles Garrett in that sentence, or
give me just the Bengals.

Speaker 2 (31:55):
I'm talking about relative athletic score that is comput.

Speaker 1 (32:01):
God knows who computes that. I'd be the math bomb.
He's been on my podcast before.

Speaker 2 (32:06):
Okay, well ask him where he had, Ask him where.

Speaker 1 (32:08):
He had he had a perfect score. Now Schamar did
not take part in one or two of the things
that they test for, and that helped apparently have the
perfect store. But bottom line is, if there are if
there's another guy as athletic or you know a handful
of guys, that's it. He's among the most athletic defensive

(32:29):
lineman ever coming to the league.

Speaker 2 (32:31):
So now now he's got to get I mean, now
we'll find out, what does springball mean? I mean, who
knows Shamar could come out and prove that springball means
absolutely nothing. It means something, obviously, But I think he
said it best.

Speaker 7 (32:43):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (32:44):
I guess when I talked to him after he signed,
and he said, you know, yeah, I have him been
on the field, but I believe in my physicality.

Speaker 1 (32:52):
I believe in I believe my ability.

Speaker 2 (32:55):
And he goes, I've got the I've been looking at
the plays, I've had the playbook, I've sat in the meetings.

Speaker 1 (32:59):
You know, I think that helped.

Speaker 2 (33:00):
So we're not talking about a guy that you know
wasn't here, right, you know, So and I you know,
he's been talking to these guys, he's been you know,
McKinley Jackson's one of his best friends, Mims. He's been
talking with Mims for day, text and everything, and so
it's not like he was gone. So I just don't
think and any you know, Jerry Montgomery is a veteran

(33:20):
defensive line coach who's been around. So I just don't
think this is you know, I just don't see anybody
getting overheated about the situation. You know, I think, yeah,
you know, I think you know, we haven't had a
what rookie holdout and maybe you know, fifteen years or something.
So I think that's part of it, you know, that's
part of it is Wow, we haven't had you know.

(33:41):
I try to tell people, you know, thirty years ago,
this was a daily you know, this was a daily
thing in training camp, you know, and it was other
side throwing bombs and he said, you know, they would
make this look.

Speaker 1 (33:50):
Like a tea party.

Speaker 2 (33:51):
So I just don't think it's a I think it's
a They get him for the fourth practice he's been here,
and I think that's pretty I think they I think
they're pretty happy that they've got you know, like Zach said,
no question, get him ready for the opener.

Speaker 1 (34:06):
My feeling is it essentially got done in the nick
of time. The pads go on tomorrow, so he has
not missed a padded practice yet. He's in tip top shape.
As you said, he was in on virtually all of
the meetings during the you know, the spring schedule until
the very last day of the mandatory mini camp, so
he's been around the team. He's one of the guys.

(34:26):
He's been in the playbook. Now it's going out in
the field and preparing physically, and again he hasn't missed
a padded practice. So had it extended into next week,
I think it would have been significant. But I really
feel like they got it done in the nick of time. Yeah,
I mean I think that.

Speaker 2 (34:45):
You know, he said it best when he said, you know,
there's a difference, man, this is the National Football League.
And he said, when hen Orlando Brown Junior put hands
on him, you know, you know wow. And when amarusmim
has put hands on him at right tackle, he said,
it was like, you know, two bricks on his chest.

Speaker 7 (35:01):
You know.

Speaker 2 (35:01):
So he needs the time. He knows he needs the time.
These guys know he needs the time. I mean I
think that, you know, plus two what kind of and
you probably felt this too hoardy? This this is we're
kind of on fast forward here, not only because Zach
wants to get off to a good start and he's
really pounded that. But you know, they play next week,
they play August seventh, they play Thursday. This team's on

(35:25):
the road Wednesday.

Speaker 1 (35:26):
August sixth, you know, I mean ten days.

Speaker 2 (35:29):
Yeah, so they get out of the I mean, they
get out of this this thing. They got. Everybody's on
fast forward. So I think that was I think that's
a lot of the mindset too. This team is, you know,
this team is rapidly looking ahead to September seventh.

Speaker 1 (35:43):
One big contract issue down, one to go with Trey Hendrickson.
It was interesting at the pre training camp luncheon that
the Bengals hold every year, they so called Mock Turtle
Soup Luncheon, Mike Brown it publicly expressed confidence that he
felt that it was going to get done. Mike usually
doesn't say things like that unless he has a real
conviction that it is. So, what is your optimism level

(36:06):
right now that that Trey's going to sign?

Speaker 2 (36:07):
Well, like I said, I think they've always been talking,
you know, I don't think they've ever not talked. I
know they've got you know, I think probably a couple
of people are talking to Tree, you know. So I
don't think there's a there's not there's not been an
iron curtain falling down, which is the big thing. And uh,
you know, I think, like you said, you know, it's
it sounded to me like they were when Mike walked across, Uh,

(36:30):
when Mike walked across the hall to go to the luncheon,
that they had something almost done. And then I think
maybe when he got back to the office, who knows, Yeah,
maybe something changed that happens in this stuff. So I mean,
you know, if Mike Brown's optimistic, I'm going to be optimistic.
I mean, you know, these guys are this is what
these guys do. They do deals, they did Shamar. I
have no doubt they're talking to the county, why they're

(36:51):
getting the Shama done, and why they're also talking to
Harold Lewis Drey's agent. They're also getting stuff done with
the county. So it's a you know, there's always close
store meetings around here, so I mean there's always stuff
gets stuff gets done that you don't see in the headlines.

Speaker 1 (37:08):
When I heard Mike say what he said on Monday,
I came away with the feeling that, like the big
picture numbers are either done or close. And now, whether
it's signing bonus or you know, percentage upfront or whatever
it might be, those are the things that have to
be resolved. But for Mike to be that optimistic, like

(37:29):
the big numbers, I feel like that part is probably
either done or close.

Speaker 2 (37:34):
I mean, those small things get bigger as you get
closer to the season. So what seems like maybe a
small item to either side may not as you get closer,
as you draw closer to getting this thing off. But
it's uh, you know, we're like I said, they're optimistic
and they're talking beyond that. I'm not sure what else

(37:56):
you can say, just like I say, so you know,
you have to feel.

Speaker 1 (37:59):
Good that talking. So when I asked you off the
top for your number one takeaway, you started with morning practices.
They practice at ten am. They have a walk through
at the end of the day before everybody goes home.
Is that making a difference? Guys like it? But do
you think it's making a difference.

Speaker 2 (38:15):
We won't know until they won't know until Wap's doing
the radio show at in Cleveland on September seventh, and then, oh,
it was a stroke of genius because they won thirty
one to three. But the fact they like it, I
think is proof that you know, probably they did the
right thing. I mean from I mean, you know, back

(38:36):
in the day, you would do it just so to
get out of the heat. But nowadays, because of nutrition,
how these guys heat. I mean, these guys probably they
do just as much stuff warming up and warming down.
Then they do actually out in the field. So I mean,
you know, Jim and I was talking about how it's
good morning's great, got two hours to himself, but he's
also you know, doing other stuff in the gym, and

(38:57):
then he's getting something to eat, and it just seems,
you know, Gasecki was talking about that he's gives him
more time to do his own thing, you know. So
you know that's and you know, I was sold when
Burrow said I'm a morning guy. Okay, I mean, come on,
that's that's I think that's that's proof.

Speaker 1 (39:16):
It's uh, it's working well. To use your phrase, I
imagine you have some tapping to do. That's how you
describe writing your stories, so I will let you tap.
I appreciate the time as always.

Speaker 2 (39:31):
It's great to talk to Hordy. I think I've been
able to hear the two best voices I've heard in
a long time, Philip Bailey of Earth Wind and Fire
and Dan Horde, and both both get better.

Speaker 1 (39:44):
As the age. I will not start singing reasons right
now because it hurts my ribcage to try to hit
the high notes. Appreciate the kind words. See you tomorrow,
Thanks Fordy.

Speaker 2 (39:55):
We'll do it again.
