Speaker 1 (00:00):
And I just think that's indicative of who Dylan is
gaming and game out when when the game's on the line,
this guy's there's no moment too big, no moment too little.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
He's never too high, never too low. And it really
showed up for us this past season.
Speaker 3 (00:13):
It's the best podcast available on the best possible weather
day of Rookie Mini Camp. I think you can ask
for a little bit of chill in the air, but
in otherwise beautiful day. And we welcome you to another edition,
which we are taping on Friday, the ninth of May,
after the Browns just wrapped up their first day of
(00:34):
Rookie Mini Camp. That is Jason Gibbs. My name is
Andrews Siciliado. After so many people requested post combine that
we're side by side, standing next to each other again, Gibbey,
I'm glad you agreed to do it.
Speaker 4 (00:49):
Hey, you're the least I can do for you, Mike,
the least that I can do. By the way, it
is a perfectly beautiful day. Is amazing. I did find
the six feet of shade where it was about forty
degrees for Cleveland Brown's Daily earlier. If you asked my
home the girl, but they were whatever it is, what
it is.
Speaker 3 (01:08):
You gotta know they came out out of the shade
into the sun to watch a good practice.
Speaker 4 (01:12):
Eventually, yes, and by the way, practice maybe not over
for a couple of people out here.
Speaker 3 (01:17):
So if you can, and you know, Philly, don't you
can move over, please don't do it. But right back
here without his number twelve Jersey on that is, should
or Sanders getting some post practice work in. Let's talk
about the quarterbacks because obviously every one of the Browns
drafted rookies is here, including Mason Graham wearing ninety four
(01:40):
and Carson Swssinger wearing forty nine, and Harold fan And
wearing eighty eight and Dylan Sampson twenty two. You get
my point. Dylan Gabriel number five, Sanders is wearing number twelve,
except obviously Sands Jersey. Right now, the focus is on
the two quarterbacks. I'm not trying to just beat over
unf whatever. I'm not just trying to put the ball
(02:02):
in the middle of the fairway for the sake of
not taking an opinion here. They both look good day one.
Trying to get my words out, you get my point.
They both look good. Day one. They both look like quarterbacks.
Have played a lot of college ball, Gabriel at three
schools and jud Or Sanders at two schools. They both won.
They're both pros when it comes to the college game.
And I thought they both threw the ball well and
(02:24):
handle themselves well.
Speaker 4 (02:25):
Day one absolutely, considering that they arrived twenty four hours ago,
They've had a lot thrown at them. They've been in meetings, orientations,
equipment fittings, just trying to get the lay of the
land and how things work. And they've been in the
building since seven am on Friday morning when they had
orientation for the weight room and what's expected there, workouts,
(02:48):
walk throughs, and then an hour and a half practice
and they and they did exceptionally well.
Speaker 3 (02:54):
All of us, and I know all of you, have
been asking the same question, how is this going to work?
And who's going to win the job? We don't know.
It's May nine right now. Is a long time between
now and week number one. Is a long time between
now and training camp. If you are keeping score at home, don't, okay,
but if you want to know, we could tell you.
Dylan Gabriel took the first snaps and eleven on eleven.
(03:15):
I could tell you he probably did that because he
was the third round pick at ninety four and Shador
Sanders was the fifth round pick at one, And that
is how I expected it to go. They both got
the same amount of work, and eleven on eleven and
seven on seven, I thought they both threw the ball. Well, truly,
it's too early. It's May nine, and Kevin Stefanski just
(03:36):
said the exact same thing on the podium, So do
not read exactly like.
Speaker 4 (03:43):
It's only two of the four quarterbacks in the room.
Speaker 3 (03:45):
Right, Let's take us not here. Joe Flacco's not here.
At least they're here, but not out on the field.
Speaker 4 (03:50):
Yes, the veterans aren't here this weekend, though everybody will
get all acclimated with each other.
Speaker 3 (03:55):
On Monday.
Speaker 4 (03:56):
We'll throw them all in and let's see what happens.
Speaker 3 (03:58):
Dylan Gabriel throws a nice We have told you that
he throws the intermediate ball really well, gets the ball
out quickly. You can see him go through his progressions.
Its head is always moving. He looked very very comfortable.
Should Or Sanders first snap and eleven on eleven was
from under center. A little bobble coming away from center,
which is often the case with college quarterbacks that work
predominantly in a shotgun system before they got here. But
(04:20):
you also got to consider you're taking a snap from
a guard playing center who is also fighting for a
roster spot. Here, those things already be expected. First play,
eleven on eleven, bobble the snap, kind of backpedaling. The
rush was there, he lofted it towards the sideline. He go,
oh boy. And then from that point on he got
in a rhythm. And yes, he was more comfortable talking
(04:41):
to Shador out of the shotgun. But when he was
in the gun eleven on eleven and seven on seven,
got the snap, got that ball out quickly, showed good
zip on the ball. I thought he was impressive.
Speaker 4 (04:54):
He was very impressive. Both guys they throw the ball
with ease, and they can throw it a great distance,
both of them with ease. There doesn't look to be
a lot of you know, throwing your whole body into
throwing a pass. You know, it's just they knew where
they were going with the football. They knew they had
to make plays, and they did, and they made plays
(05:16):
to wide receivers.
Speaker 3 (05:18):
To tight ends.
Speaker 4 (05:19):
You know, one guy we didn't talk about earlier Harold
Fan and Junior. I'm gonna keep bringing him up. It happens.
I got a video with it. But he looked really
good today. Again we're throwing on air, but the guys
are making plays when they needed to make plays.
Speaker 3 (05:32):
Yeah, I know you're gonna probably look back at this
and say, hey, of course all the rookies look good
day number when they did, they really did. And we're
not even talking about Mason Graham, who's wearing number ninety four,
the white defenses wearing white today, nor Carson Squestinger. Squesseinger
really moved well. It's hard to get a good read
on Mason Graham. I mean, look, defensive linemen aren't really
doing much here. No one's going to the ground. But
(05:55):
they both were comfortable on the podium. They've both been
great in the building. Checkout Brown social as well, and
all early returns good. We got all the focus on
the quarterbacks here. I want to pick it up on
the running backs for a second. Let's not forget about
those two guys as well. Second round pick and a
fifth ront pick, quinch On Judkins and Dylan Sampson. The
quarterbacks maybe didn't have a lot of interaction, right, talking
(06:16):
to Tommy Rees and Kevin Stefanski and Bill Muskray between
snaps here right, getting little finer coaching points about playing quarterback.
These running backs over here when they worked out pregame
were pre practice with Duce Daley quinch On Judkins and
Dylan Sampson had some great energy. I think they're gonna
be a fun, fun tandem to watch, already pushing each other,
(06:36):
already gone with coach. It was cool.
Speaker 4 (06:39):
Yeah no no, no, no no, And their personalities both come out.
I mean, we've had time with both guys. You're gonna
hear from both guys here in the coming weeks on
the best podcast available. But that's a fun running back room.
And those guys, I mean we watched when they when
they were going through the high stepping and then the sprinting.
You know, I think Judkins got the best of them
(06:59):
m hm the first couple times. But like spirited, good
fun practice. Saw some fullbacks.
Speaker 3 (07:06):
Yeah about a little full back yeah, like a little
full full back action.
Speaker 4 (07:10):
But but two guys that are really I think gonna
take this running back room to a different level than
it was a year ago.
Speaker 3 (07:17):
And this only a couple of hours after Browns GM
Andrew Berry was on the radio with our friend Ken
Carmen this morning on ninety two to three, and he
said it is his words, quote increasingly unlikely end quote,
that Nick Chubb will be back, not exactly a surprise
after the Browns took two running backs running backs they
expect to use a lot this coming season in the draft.
(07:39):
The door is still open because Berry said he would
never close it. My takeaway from it, Gibby, it sounded like, listen,
if we have an injury, if it's August September, we
need somebody else. If Nick is still out there, undoubtedly
staying in shape a year removed from the kN injury,
and Ab said the footy is healing fine. Yeah, the
(08:02):
door is still open. I just don't know that it's likely.
Speaker 4 (08:07):
Yeah, and I get it.
Speaker 3 (08:09):
It it sucks.
Speaker 4 (08:10):
It's hard to shake, Yeah, because Nick's done so much
for this franchise. And don't think the people in the
building behind us aren't appreciative of all.
Speaker 3 (08:18):
Everybody and every fan is as well.
Speaker 4 (08:20):
Yeah, but unfortunately it reaches a business point and you
need two sides, you know, to tango when it comes
to a contract and you know, maybe Nick's looking out
for his best interest, maybe the team's looking out for
their best interest. Right now as it stands on May ninth,
lot can happen. Nick Chubb's not with another team yet.
(08:42):
Let's see how it all shakes.
Speaker 3 (08:44):
Out, and listen if he does find another team. I
want Nick Chubb to find the best success, possibly because
all of us, all of you. I don't want nothing
but the best for that guy. I want it to
be here. Let's play make believe. If the Browns were
to sign Nick Chubb tomorrow with two young running backs
ready to go, with two young, productive, dynamic, you hope
(09:05):
running backs ready to go, and with Jerome Forte, I
was going to say, sure, obviously, who had his moments
and has had them the last three years, the first
three years of his career. It's fair to ask, you
only have one football, like, how many carries are there
for Nick Chubb? Sure, but I'd still love that back.
Both can be true. I just don't know right now
(09:25):
that it's going to happen.
Speaker 4 (09:26):
Exactly, And especially you have other needs at other positions
that you have to fill. And now you've got a
pretty crowded running back room. So we'll see how it
all plays.
Speaker 3 (09:35):
Out, kind of like the first day of school for
all of these rookies, including one of the quarterbacks who
were eleven at UCF, who were eight at Oklahoma and
at Oregon.
Speaker 4 (09:49):
Look you remember and all this.
Speaker 3 (09:50):
I had to look it up this morning. I got
by the UCF one but is now wearing number five
here for the Browns and earlier today give a you
get credit for setting this up. Had a really cool
sit down with not only the quarterback but a familiar
face from his past. It's kind of cool. I think
(10:11):
this is also a first. We've got Dylan Gabriel here,
the Browns third round pick, and Dylan, you want to
introduce the guy up.
Speaker 5 (10:19):
There on the screen, yep, the best head coach in
college football, Dan Lanning.
Speaker 3 (10:23):
Dan Lanning, the head coach of the Oregon Ducks. Coach.
How are you? Thanks for doing this?
Speaker 2 (10:27):
I'm doing great, doing great. Good to see you guys.
Speaker 3 (10:30):
What does it feel like? What does it mean to
you in your program to see this guy right here,
a third round pick? You're smiling here on his kind
of first day of school here at rookie Minnie camp.
Speaker 2 (10:42):
I'm so excited for him.
Speaker 1 (10:44):
This guy's worked his for so long to be in
the position that he's in, and he makes us really
proud here at Oregon.
Speaker 3 (10:50):
I can tell you that what does it mean to
be a Duck in the NFL?
Speaker 5 (10:53):
It means bunch, you know. I think the year we had,
but also just the people in that community and that
that whole organization just how much they care mix mix
it that much more meaningful, you know, being able to
represent them.
Speaker 3 (11:08):
You're kind of used to the first day of school.
You did it, you see, if you did in Oklahoma,
you did it Oregon specifically, What did that first day
of school and that one season there in Eugene do
to set you up for this moment this weekend? So much?
Speaker 5 (11:24):
You know, I even go to as little as verbiage,
you know, and the language that I was able to
learn within that building with Coach Stein, Coach Lanning, but
also just the way to work, you know, a professional
atmosphere that coach provided and then everyone just adopted that
mentality and that's why it's been a smooth transition again
here in Cleveland. A lot for me to learn, but
(11:47):
I think just being set up and prepared in that way,
being able to, you know, have that in college is
huge for me.
Speaker 3 (11:54):
Now, hey, Dan, you had seen him obviously at Oklahoma
and at U See, But when he got to campus,
when did you know that Dylan had it? Whatever it is.
Speaker 1 (12:02):
I think one of the best things Dylan did. I
recognized it early, and I mean you could already see
who the player was on film. But one of the
best things he did is how quickly he connected with
the people in the building.
Speaker 2 (12:12):
You know, and I'm not talking about just the players.
Speaker 1 (12:14):
His ability to connect with our equipment staff, his ability
to connect with janitorial staff, like whoever's in the building.
Dylan's that guy that when you walk in the room,
you feel really special that you get the opportunity to
have a conversation with him. And if you don't, if
you don't create that conversation, Dylan's going to create it
with you.
Speaker 2 (12:29):
He's going to walk up to you and introduce himself.
Speaker 1 (12:32):
And you know, you talk about people from the island
using the word o'hanna, like Dylan lives that every day.
Speaker 3 (12:37):
What does Oha mean to you?
Speaker 5 (12:39):
Not to quote Leland Stitch, but it is finally, you know,
it's it's just a way of life. You know, That's
how I grew up.
Speaker 3 (12:45):
It's natural to me.
Speaker 5 (12:46):
It's just who I am and I try to display
that by just being myself. So it's it's good to
be able to represent Hawaii as well, and something I'm
very proud of.
Speaker 3 (12:57):
Part of the I think fitting in and assimilating and
getting to know everybody coach, Like you said, was the
mini van. When I was there for a game last
year in Eugene, everybody was talking about almost like you're
an uber driver, right that. You You got a minivan.
You didn't get the sports car with your nil money.
You got the van to take your teammates around campus
(13:19):
to get to know them. Yeah, it was.
Speaker 5 (13:22):
It was a unique way to, you know, just be
a representation of kind of who you are. And I think,
you know me going into Oregon h knowing that I
had to, you know, gain the team over in a
genuine way, I thought it was a fun way to
do so, you know, and for me it's I'm no
better than anyone, even though I played quarterback and you know,
(13:44):
to every single snap, so that that meant I'm not
too big or too small for anyone, and just take
advantage of every opportunity by being myself.
Speaker 3 (13:52):
Dan, did you get a ride in the van.
Speaker 2 (13:54):
I never rode in the van. I never rode in
the van.
Speaker 1 (13:56):
I saw the van a lot because Dylan spent a
ton of time that building. But I saw a lot
of other people riding in the van, which is great.
Speaker 3 (14:04):
Is the van here you bring? Can you ship the
van from Hawaii?
Speaker 5 (14:07):
It's a mystery right now, but we might have a
trick up our sleeve. Really might have one, so let's
just wait and see.
Speaker 3 (14:16):
Okay, but you talked about like Genny to know everyone
and try to blend in. You got out of the car.
I think it might have even been a van yesterday
in front of the building with a Guardian's hat on.
Are you now a Guardians fan, Dylan Gabriel.
Speaker 5 (14:28):
Well one, Joey Cantillo, Yeah, the picture Hawaiian a close
friend of mine, so excited to see him again. But
then also, you know I'm headed here to Cleveland, so
it went to my nearest lids got me a Guardian's hat.
And I know the Calves are doing well too, so
maybe there's a Calve's hat in my near future.
Speaker 3 (14:47):
As we record this. By the way, the Cavaliers are
down to nothing heading into Indiana for Game three, so
fingers crossed here. Yeah, come on on that one. You
said that you are built for this. Before you answer this, Dan,
how is because he's walking into a crowded quarterback room,
I'm talking about you in the third person here, Sorry, Yalan,
how is he built for this?
Speaker 2 (15:07):
Well?
Speaker 1 (15:07):
I when everybody I talked to in this process, draft process,
the first word.
Speaker 2 (15:10):
I always use with Dylan as poised.
Speaker 5 (15:12):
You know.
Speaker 1 (15:12):
I remember we're playing Wisconsin this year, and all week
in practice we talked about, Hey, in the third quarter,
when this jump around song comes on, we're gonna it's
gonna be like our fuel, right, We're gonna start jumping
around like crazy. I didn't realize at the time we
were going to be down in the game. It was
going to be fourth and nine, right, and we're about
to go step on the field and there's a and
during this moment, Dylan had an unwavering focus about what
(15:35):
he was about to do. And we run a play
and it's actually a busted play, and Dylan does an
unbelievable job of escaping and delivering it past the Terrence Ferguson.
Speaker 2 (15:43):
Through a really tight window.
Speaker 1 (15:44):
And I just think that's indicative of who Dylan is
gaming and game out when when the game's on the line,
this guy's there's no moment too big, no moment too little.
Speaker 2 (15:53):
He's never too high, never too low. And that really
showed up for us this past season.
Speaker 3 (15:58):
How are you built for this man with a credit
quarter who you're walking into.
Speaker 5 (16:01):
I've done it all my life, you know, and for me,
I'm it's my new challenge, but it's also refreshing, you know.
It's a new opportunity and one I look forward to.
There's a bunch of guys in this room, and you
can learn from anyone, and I look forward to doing so.
But you know, my my competition is myself yesterday? How
can I be better? You know, every single day? And
(16:22):
as long as I keep that focus and try to
continue to do that, I should be just fun all
right before we.
Speaker 3 (16:28):
Talk a little bit more about that, Dan, But I
know what you used to do or still do do
is you like to play the song, the music, whatever
it is, jump around of the team that you're getting
ready for. Like you just said, have you asked Kevin
Stefanski to play Renegade yet? Potentially before Steeler a week?
Speaker 5 (16:47):
I haven't, but maybe we need to adopt that same
you want to do. Yes, I think that'd be a
good idea.
Speaker 3 (16:52):
Right, let's go back to draft night. We've seen the
video you that morning with a bird call where you
said bird said back to you that you were going
ninety four?
Speaker 2 (17:04):
Did you know?
Speaker 5 (17:06):
Well, I'll just say this, it was kind of a metaphor, like,
you know, a little birdie told me, you know, the
little birdie told me. Yeah, So I kind of used that.
But yeah, it's it's still a mystery. I think it's
funny that that had gotten out, but it's it's there,
and you know, just felt strongly.
Speaker 3 (17:24):
How did you Well, you and Kevin Sefanski clearly hit
it off, right, Yeah, tell me about that.
Speaker 5 (17:29):
Yeah, I think you know, he reminds me a lot
of coaches that I've had success with, and just a
guy who gives ownership and responsibility to his players. Very
mature and I say that in the coaching style and
you just get that right when you have a conversation
with him. So I'm excited that I was able to,
you know, walk into that and be able to learn
(17:52):
from the best.
Speaker 3 (17:53):
You also have Oregon legend Bill Muskgrave here as well.
Is he telling you stories of his glory days.
Speaker 5 (18:02):
He is and definitely a lot of funny ones. But
I think even that is such a cool way of
being able to connect, you know, us sharing you know,
Oregon and all the stories. And you know, even when
he came down on his on my private visit, you know,
he was able to come back home and visit and
see the big changes at Oregon. So it was good
(18:23):
and you know, I'm excited to work with him as well.
Speaker 3 (18:26):
Dan, What does the Oregon quarterback tradition mean being continued
by this guy?
Speaker 2 (18:31):
Yeah, he carried it on.
Speaker 1 (18:32):
You know, I'm really proud of what Dylan was able
to do here, and there obviously is a story tradition
here of guys that have come and played at Oregon
and done unbelievable jobs in their career here and then
let it carry over to the NFL, a lot of
guys having success. So Dylan's just furthering that legacy for us.
Speaker 3 (18:49):
And Dylan finally here when you step on the field
for the first time rookie mini camp, what will it
mean to start that journey and what do you expect
here for your rookie season.
Speaker 5 (19:03):
You know, a lot of excitement obviously, excited for this
new challenge and this new journey. But also you know,
for me, I just look forward to creating value and
that's in every single way, you know, and in the
locker room, on the field, and just what I bring
every single day. So you know, you create value, create impact,
and you finally to help the team win, and that's
(19:25):
in any role that ends up happening.
Speaker 3 (19:28):
Dan, I'm sure you've done this via text or maybe
even a phone call, but you got a final message
for this guy.
Speaker 1 (19:32):
I love you, brother, I'm so proud of you, and
I can't wait to see what you do.
Speaker 4 (19:37):
Man.
Speaker 2 (19:37):
You're You're the best out there, so just keep doing
your thing.
Speaker 5 (19:40):
Be you appreciate you.
Speaker 3 (19:41):
Like Dylan Gabriel, impressive young man by the way, I
love the energy between him and his coach.
Speaker 4 (19:47):
Yes, well, he's an intense man, intense in a good way.
I appreciate all the organ sid people helping us line
that up. What do you think by the way of
Kevin's fancy playing Renegade? Did you did you catch that?
Speaker 3 (20:02):
Because I asked Gabriel if he wanted to play, because
Landing played, you know, everyone else's song.
Speaker 4 (20:07):
I play Renegade the Monday after we beat the Steelers. Okay,
that's when I played my Rennick.
Speaker 3 (20:12):
Have we had this conversation that I thought it was overrated?
I know you should I not have this conversation on whatever.
I don't care what.
Speaker 4 (20:19):
They screwed it up the last time they did it,
okay in Pittsburgh.
Speaker 3 (20:22):
It is. It was underwhelming. This past year drives me crazy.
Do we agree it was underwhelming? Yes? Yeah, this is
not screw They screwed himself, I'm saying. All right. So
day one of the books a rookie mini Camp. We're
gonna have another practice on Saturday. On Sunday as well.
Media will be here, including yours truly, on Saturday as well,
so we'll have more coverage of Brown's Rookie Mini Camp
(20:42):
as we continue. So please stay tuned to all Browns
platforms for continuing coverage of your new Browns out here
on the Field. For Jason Gibbs, I'm andrews Ciliao. This
is like Twins all over again. It is the best
podcast today.
