Speaker 1 (00:09):
Welcome to Between the Horses, presented to you by your
Southern California Toyota Dealers. I'm Kirsten Watson alongside Jab Long,
Maurice Jones Drew. It is Week four, but before we
get ahead to the exciting matchup in Chicago against the Bears,
we have to go back to week three, the home opener,
A huge win against the rivals forty nine ers, A
comeback win. When you guys think about just that one,

(00:31):
where does that win rink for you all when it
comes to the regular season, A comeback win and just
the performance that this team had to put themselves in
a better position to start the season. I'll start with you, JB.

Speaker 2 (00:41):
I'm not trying to avoid the question, but can we
acknowledge greatness in the building? First? This year he's joining
us with a magic number at what too?

Speaker 3 (00:49):
Two?

Speaker 2 (00:50):
How about the summer of show?

Speaker 1 (00:51):
Hey, it's been crazy, Oh my goodness, it's been crazy.

Speaker 2 (00:54):
Still drying off from that gatorade bath you got?

Speaker 4 (00:57):
Did they get you wet?

Speaker 1 (00:58):
Yeah? They got me.

Speaker 4 (00:59):
Why did they talk to someone bought that?

Speaker 1 (01:00):
I would say yes. However, it's just if we can
clinch tonight and the Dodgers can then it's going to
happen again today, so it don't even worry about.

Speaker 2 (01:07):
Handled it like the true professional that you have your
bonnet on.

Speaker 4 (01:10):
We can't get that pretty hairway.

Speaker 2 (01:12):
It's too late, busy time year though for you, and
glad to have you back in the RAMS environment, and
you picked the perfect moment. That one ranks pretty highly
for me.

Speaker 1 (01:23):
I'm jealous that I wasn't there. I'll be honest, very jealous.

Speaker 2 (01:26):
I mean, I think you got to kind of separate
into two categories, Like what it means for this season,
we don't know yet. It depends whether or not you
cash it in this week in Chicago, next week against
the Packers, and on and on. But zooming out bigger picture.
It's nice not to have to deal with the regular season.
That's so fine nonsense anymore, you know. I think as

(01:47):
they continue to kind of grow their audience, their fan
base and get bragging rights. You know, we previewed it
on this show last week, right, like the Escalator Gang
and all those sorts of things like this is what
rivalry football is all about. It's awesome. And next year
when you play the forty nine ers, you have you
don't have to answer to any of those.

Speaker 5 (02:04):
Questions, I think you're exactly right. It was bigger. It
is probably the biggest one for me, just.

Speaker 4 (02:10):
The biggest regular season, ye know, just just for on.

Speaker 5 (02:12):
A personal being from the Bay Area, living up there
all week, I heard from you know, I have my
sons in high school. My other one does youth. All
the coaches are Niners fans. Everyone's Niners fans. So I'm
just chirping left and right now. You know, I'm trying
to hold my own, but they you start to wear
you down after so long, and so to be able
to go back home this week and everyone be quiet

(02:34):
when I walk in to go back home, and my neighbor,
you know, to see his little Niner flag flat, and.

Speaker 4 (02:41):
Hey, how are you things going good? I hope your
day is getting better? Right?

Speaker 5 (02:45):
It just it just makes you feel good because I
remember as a player, not being a fan too, and
obviously working with the team and being around these guys.
It's a lot more than that, right, Like people's days,
especially like when they LEVI South and all that. But
that's just more on a personal note. But for a
team perspective, I thought it was awesome. It was awesome

(03:05):
for Jared verse to get after Trent Williams right, like
on a football aspect, you brought him.

Speaker 4 (03:10):
Into be physical, and he was physical. He won that battle.

Speaker 5 (03:14):
To bring Alaric Jackson a Lark Jackson to come back
and to handle Nick Bosa like, those are monumental wins
for this team because that's what you built this offseason for,
is to be able to beat the Niners and then
do it without your guys, right, And granted they didn't
have their guys either, but to do with the guys
you did it with makes this to me probably the

(03:36):
biggest regular season win off of coming off of you know,
not winning so many. I know last year you won
the last one, but no one really played, right.

Speaker 2 (03:44):
But I'm counting the last one too. Two game regular
season winning.

Speaker 4 (03:47):
I'll take it.

Speaker 5 (03:47):
I'll take it for sure, But I'm just saying more
for a psychological thing is their guys had to play
your guys, and this game mattered for both teams.

Speaker 1 (03:54):
I think that's actually really perfect segue though, because then
also when you look at starting zero to two is
one thing, but two pick up a win, one at
home against the Niners to now sit at one and two,
how much confidence can that bring, especially considering you do
have players who had to step up. There are a
lot of guys who are down with injury, So how
can a win like this really just kind of puts
you in a a good spot when it comes to

(04:14):
momentum and moving forward.

Speaker 2 (04:16):
I think the most precious resource we have and all
walks of life is time. And I think that wind
brought you the time you need to hang in this fight,
to put yourself back on a track to play meaningful
football this season, and to get some of your key
pieces the time they need to rejoin you, whether it's
on the other side of the by somewhere in October,
when you have a chance to really go play for something.

Speaker 4 (04:37):
Yeah, you said it best.

Speaker 5 (04:39):
It allows like it's like the first step of having
a good day.

Speaker 4 (04:43):
Then you have a good week, then you have a
good month.

Speaker 5 (04:46):
Right, And so I think this win to see the
energy in the locker room, to hear a coach McVeigh
go up and be like, oh, like oh blank, what
a time, right, it was just a different type of energy.

Speaker 4 (04:58):
I felt like you, I had.

Speaker 5 (05:00):
A moral victory against Detroit. Oh, if we were healthy,
we played Detroit, we had a chance. Then you had
the debacle in Arizona. Then you come back and you
find a way to win. Now it's about can we
stack these wins each week? And while we're stacking, all
of a sudden, Cooper comes out of a cast up,
all of a sudden pooking.

Speaker 4 (05:16):
The coup is working out on the sideline like.

Speaker 2 (05:19):
All of Williams. You're starting corner.

Speaker 5 (05:20):
Yeah, yeah, like all these guys are starting to like
show back up and it's like we've we've added and
we talked about this JB a lot and curious you
you'd love this. But it's a blessing in disguise because
right now, why guys are getting hurt, these other guys
are getting reps. You're adding more depth to your roster
of guys are playing meaningful football. And when they come back,
it's like, oh to two Atwells here, we got to
find a role for him.

Speaker 4 (05:41):
Oh this guy did this, Oh this guy did that.

Speaker 5 (05:44):
And now we have depth, we can be a more
virgatile offense and defense going forward.

Speaker 2 (05:48):
I was having a really hard time seeing the blessing.
I was seeing most dis skies though down two touchdowns.
You know what I'm saying you and be both.

Speaker 5 (05:54):
I was like oh, I don't think I could use
this line again, but sure enough, the football gods they
were like, hey, two two Atwells down there somewhere, just
throw it up and he comes.

Speaker 4 (06:03):
Down with it.

Speaker 2 (06:04):
In part because you saw this, he was like John
snow there on NFL Network.

Speaker 1 (06:08):
Right, Okay, So I want.

Speaker 2 (06:09):
To ask him about the world.

Speaker 1 (06:10):
Can you just take us inside the studio of knowing
like you were the only analyst there were ten of
you guys. Yeah, you're the only one to pick the Rams.

Speaker 5 (06:18):
And you know what, That's how it is all the time.
And I'm okay with that. Like I said, I'm gonna
stand with the Ramley. I've kind of told myself, you know,
I'm the honorary CEO.

Speaker 4 (06:27):
I don't know who the CEO of the.

Speaker 5 (06:28):
Ramley is the organization of the fan base, but I'll
be him for right now, and I'll stand to the forefront.

Speaker 4 (06:33):
You don't have to be there. I'll stand by myself
as they all come at me.

Speaker 5 (06:36):
But when we win, just know I'm gonna rise up
like the phoenix from the ashes and I'm gonna shine
bright and yell Rams all day.

Speaker 4 (06:44):
So it was fun.

Speaker 6 (06:45):
Good.

Speaker 1 (06:45):
Have you been back in the studio, and what was
the reactions everyone just when you walked in, being like
mm hmm. I told you.

Speaker 5 (06:52):
I went back right after the game and one of
the stage producers, a big Niner fan, was there, and
I just, I don't want to rub it in your face,
you know, because they're all outside and they're all upset.
It's getting a nice wink and smiled confident. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
border I'm right there though, I'm right on the edge.
The toe is off, not the whole foot, but the
toe is off enough.

Speaker 2 (07:12):
I've told you this yet. But the crossing guard on
our way to school, his name's Q, is always wearing
Niners gear. He's got like the key chain, the shirt whatever.
My four year old has been giving it to him
all week.

Speaker 5 (07:23):
Would you see the wind that I'm talking about? Like
I needed that. I was down to my last leg.
I'm trying to tell you it's hard. It's hard out
here when you're when these Niner fans get on you many.
You can't let a fan base get you like the
Niners had us for a while, because now people just
start to raggle on you a little bit. And I'm
happy that our fans are players, even John Johnson got on.

Speaker 4 (07:41):
I saw a podcast where he was talking trash like it.

Speaker 5 (07:44):
Gets at you if you you know, you gotta find
a way to get out of there, and they found
a way, which is awesome.

Speaker 1 (07:48):
Yeah, it's bigger than all of us.

Speaker 4 (07:50):
Question.

Speaker 1 (07:50):
It was a huge one. It was a huge win.
And now it's kind of but it does allow you
to kind of take a step back looking at the
bigger picture. It's still only week four in the regular
season when you look at what the NFC West like
at the moment. So the Seahawks are number one, they're
leading three. You know, everyone else sits at one and two. Though,
so what does this mean just if they can go
to Chicago pick up a big one on the road,
what could this mean when it comes to the standings

(08:11):
and even just the goals for a postseason run potentially
taking the division as well.

Speaker 5 (08:17):
Well, I think you always want to set yourself up
to be in a division run at the end of
the year. And so even though it's week four, you
only get seventeen opportunities, right, And that's the difference between
football and every other sport. Most other sports you get
eighty two, one hundred, whatever it may be. You only
get seventeen to these opportunities, so each one is special.
So winning this one at home gives you kind of

(08:39):
a springboard to have some confidence going into this week
and prepare for.

Speaker 4 (08:42):
A tough Chicago team.

Speaker 5 (08:43):
Like, offensively, they're finding their way a little bit. Defensively,
this might be one of the toughest defens we're going
to see here.

Speaker 4 (08:51):
They do a great job of stopping the run.

Speaker 5 (08:54):
They're physical, they get turnovers, they're ball hawks on the
back end. So you got to make sure you're precise
in everything that you do. And if you're able to
go in in Chicago and get one again, it's another
step another plus one and the confidence of we're doing
things the right way and we could we get to
come back to work and be happy. People don't understand
when you lose a game, it's hard to come back
to work. Like it's not it's like, yeah, you do it,

(09:16):
but the energy is not the same, Like you gotta
muster up the common like all the stuff that it
takes you to go out there when you come back
after the winner's like, what's the game plan this week?

Speaker 4 (09:24):
What we're we gonna do this, How we gonna attack
them this week how would like?

Speaker 5 (09:26):
And so every time you win, it just becomes kind
of contagious, of a contagious feeling throughout the building.

Speaker 2 (09:32):
It's a weird thing to say about a division that
has what three teams at one and two? We get that, right,
But I think there's four playoff contenders in this division.
And if you are fortunate to earn another victory Monday,
watching Monday night football is gonna feel a little bit different,
you know when they come back to work, because that's
undefeated Seattle at Detroit. If I'm not mistaken, and you
still got both your game's head to head against the Seahawks.

Speaker 1 (09:54):
Yeah, So it's definitely this divisions in anyone's hands as
long as you decide to go for and take it.
When you we get just the bye week this year,
it's week six. It's the earliest it's been in the
McVay area. And excuse me in the McVay era with that,
is it coming at the perfect time though? And just
considering what the next two weeks look like. You've got
the Bears this week, the Packers at home for Week five,

(10:14):
the bye week, is it best case scenario? Just considering
the injuries and guys who could be coming back for
week seven.

Speaker 2 (10:20):
I hope that's the narrative we're spending in a couple
of weeks. And I've caught a lot of side eye
this summer from MJD and just knowing what these first
five games look like and being like, hey, the Rams
can play really well, like really well, and b one
and four or two or three, like, as long as
they've got at least two wins at the bye. This
has been my refrain. You're in this thing because you
get a bye, you come back with two home games

(10:41):
in five days, just like last year against the Raiders
and Vikings, and you might get up to something. Now.
I don't want to lower the bar for this group,
but coming off their first win, if you can get
one of these next two or both of these next two,
you're exactly where I had hoped they would be without
knowing all the context of what they would be suffering from.

Speaker 5 (10:58):
Jamie's a logical one in this world relationship. I'm the
emotional one. I'm like, we should be.

Speaker 4 (11:03):
Five and oh, we're ready to go. We've looked right.

Speaker 5 (11:06):
But I definitely understand when you have that bye week
early two things can happen. One you could be a
healthy team. You get the bye week and you're rolling
and it hurts you as detrimental, right, Or it could
be the way it is now where guys are beat up, right,
and you got guys out, and that bye wee gives
you a chance to get guys back. And if you
can get guys back and build this roster the way
it was supposed to be built on paper, and they

(11:28):
perform like they've been performing, then you have something right.
And then you go into this after this bye week,
if you're able to get two victories all of a sudden,
like last year after Green Bay, it was like after
the bye week in Green Bay, it was like, oh,
like what's going on? And then they were able to
roll off one two and then it just went just
went down the way. And so you just want to
try to catch momentum. So early bye week can help you,

(11:49):
It can hurt your momentum, or it can help you
create momentum throughout the season.

Speaker 1 (11:52):
All right, with three weeks down now, I think it's
time we kind of do a little fun thing here.
We're going to go around the horn and we're gonna
talk about what we know about the twenty four Rams. Yes,
it's really in the season, but I think coming off
of a win against the Niners was very telling in
a lot of things. So I'm gonna start with you, MJD.
What is one thing that you think you have learned
about this team where they're at right now.

Speaker 5 (12:16):
The defensive line is serious, That's what I know. I
know that they will get after the quarterback, they can
stop the run, and.

Speaker 4 (12:24):
Jared Versus is the leader of this defense. I feel.

Speaker 5 (12:28):
I say that because there were a couple games, a
couple of plays in each game where he's pushed either
the tackle or the tight end into the backfield in
a run play and or as JB will say, almost
had the running back for a tackle for loss.

Speaker 4 (12:43):
Right Like literally each week it's.

Speaker 5 (12:45):
More and more plays like that, and he's talking, he's
backing it up. And then what he did against Trent Williams.
I mean the play where Trent cramps up and we
were like, oh no, he cramped up because he was
getting what he had to work.

Speaker 4 (12:57):
He didn't think he had to work. And so.

Speaker 5 (13:01):
The deep, the young defensive line, and Jared verse As
advertised read my mind.

Speaker 2 (13:07):
Oh okay, but I see get well, let me try
this one on for size, and I want to hear
from you in the comment section whether you think this
has legs or not. The Fearsome twenty twenty Foursome, Oh,
I like it because they've got young guys in the
pass rush and they're rushing with four and they're getting there.

Speaker 4 (13:20):
Now.

Speaker 2 (13:20):
I get it. The conversion rate has to pick up,
like pressures matter, but they got to start turning them
more into negative plays with the opposing offense, and they're
gonna get that chance. I really believe it this week
against Chicago. But when you look at the young four
they have up there right Verse on one edge, Young
on the other, Kobe in the middle, Braden Fist coming
alive in that second half. If you look at position value,

(13:41):
we all know what edge rushers are worth in this league.
Defensive tackle, the Aaron Donald effect. They're starting to get
paid too. Maybe the Rams, if they can keep this
nucleus together, growing, thriving, not having the blitz and still
impact the opposing pocket, maybe they've found that next like
salary cap cheat code right where they can build off
of this with f and second year pass rushers that

(14:01):
they've grown organically into like I'm super excited about that.
And I really like the challenge against Kleb this week
because he's gonna test you the same way that Brock
Purdy and that Kyler Murray did.

Speaker 1 (14:12):
Okay, So let me see if I get this right.
Fearsome twenty twenty four.

Speaker 2 (14:15):
Yeah, the Fearsome Forsom is like, you know what this
RAMS brand is all about?

Speaker 4 (14:20):
Four?

Speaker 1 (14:20):
I like it all right, Let's see if it sticks.

Speaker 2 (14:23):
I'll stay on defense for mine, okay, which is rush
and cover go together. And I'm just gonna take an
honest look in the mirror and say, the secondary has
a long way to go, a long way to go,
and this is a big week for them in Chicago.
Do you think whether Keenan Allen plays or not. Like, yes,
the pass rush can help them out in coverage by
shortening the clock on these opposing quarterbacks. But you can't

(14:44):
keep turning opposing receivers loose for one hundred yard games
and touchdowns.

Speaker 5 (14:47):
Man, Well, there was member in the game. There was
one where Brenda a Yuka is running down the field
by yourself. No one even had it. It was bad,
but it could have been worse, is what you're saying.
It could be much worse. I agree with you in
that situation. I just think again, health, getting Darius Williams
back will help a ton. It'll allow you to then
put Kobe Durant in the slot, and then you could
keep Quintin Lake in safety.

Speaker 4 (15:08):
You don't have to do as many moving parts.

Speaker 5 (15:11):
But that's the part of it, right, Like you lose
one guy and then all of a sudden, your third
guy has to play two, and then now your fourth
guy has to play three, and then like you're just
moving guys around when I think when they get healthy,
they'll start to pick up. But it also goes with
the conversion rate of the D line right rushing cover.
If you can start getting sacks, I can sit on
more routes and be, you know, be a little bit

(15:32):
more aggressive.

Speaker 2 (15:33):
How about on offense? What do you think you know
about the twenty four rams on offense?

Speaker 5 (15:36):
Oh my goodness, Well, you know first and foremost, I'll say,
you know, robotestin that word right there is the most
important word to us. My grandmothers to tell me when
I was a kid that whenever you're sick, just to
get you know, a little call here, get some robotesting Grandma,
my bone is sticking out of my arm. I need help,
just get some robotesting to fix it. The running game

(15:58):
is the rams robotesting for Sean. It will fix all
your problems.

Speaker 4 (16:03):
Right.

Speaker 5 (16:03):
The offensive line issues, granted, getting the larg back helps out,
but sticking with the running game when you're down two
touchdowns and running the football and doing all the things
opened up what in the second half. The play action
pass allowed to our to get down the field, allowed lanes,
allowing the.

Speaker 4 (16:16):
Protection to hold up.

Speaker 5 (16:17):
In that second half, there's a couple passes where there
was no one within three yards of Matthew Stafford because
they had to respect the running game, and so to
me being able to do that, being able to be
physical in that aspect, Kyroen running the way he ran,
all the tackles and tight ends and receivers blocking and
the guys firing off the ball and getting pushing guys
over pile. That allowed the pass protection to hold up

(16:39):
where Matthew Stafford had time to make those throws on
the field.

Speaker 2 (16:41):
I'll echo that there's not an NFC quarterback I would
rather have for this year's team than Matthew Stafford, period,
point blank. Right. That's it, and it's not just because
of his arm talent. It's because of his mind. It's
because of his willingness to check to run when Kyen
is going like that. But did you see the player
highlighted this week that I wanted to show you, like
some of those stretch plays.

Speaker 4 (16:58):
Oh my god, he almost pulled a I'm trying to
get there.

Speaker 2 (17:00):
I mean, this guy is out there in his sixteenth season.
I know that's not his preference. No, that's not how
he wants to play, Like if he could design his day,
that's not what he wants to be doing. But he
did it against the Niners because that's what his head
coach and his offense wanted and needed. And did it
pay off or what?

Speaker 4 (17:15):
Man?

Speaker 5 (17:15):
Those runs were huge on our side zone and there
was a couple of them where I think Karen got
it on his hip, like right here, not in the
belly on his hips.

Speaker 2 (17:22):
Matthew's selling out. He's like, oh, Peyton Manning getting out
there trying to hand that football off.

Speaker 5 (17:26):
I love it though, Again, like I said, if you
can do that, you're stretching the defense in ways that,
especially that defensive ways they'd never been stretched before. Horizontally
and then you fake it and now like, where was
Fred Warner?

Speaker 4 (17:38):
How many times do you call Fred Warner's name on someone?

Speaker 2 (17:41):
Well, you said the fact that I noticed and felt
Verse more than Bosa. If you had told me that
before the game, I'd say, Okay, then they're gonna win
this one.

Speaker 1 (17:49):
They can win this one, and they did just that.
When you guys think about though, with gearing up four
a week four, I think one of the biggest things
coming out of this past week was there were no injuries.
Like that's huge right now? How important, though, is that
when you are preparing for another tough week in this league,
but knowing that you at least have some continuity that
you get to build off of.

Speaker 4 (18:08):
I think that that was the one it maybe rejoice.

Speaker 5 (18:10):
I think I started to dance when I heard that, like, hey,
no injuries, because if you look at what the Niners
that are going through right now, they have all types
of stuff going on. After that game. Yeah, there's a
lot of guys that are after these games. It's like
to hear the Rams say no injuries, It's like who okay,
Like we get the same five offensive linemen, we get
the same receivers, we get the same defense, We get

(18:31):
the same this and they get to learn how to
play with each other.

Speaker 4 (18:34):
Right.

Speaker 5 (18:35):
So I know as a running back, when I had
the same five linemen, they knew exactly how I wanted
to run.

Speaker 4 (18:39):
I knew exactly how they were going to block it.
And we didn't have to talk, right.

Speaker 5 (18:42):
Because we've repped these plays so many times and every
week again we talk about confidence. Every week you get
more confident in what you're doing. That's the most important thing.
So to have no injuries to be you know, they
always talk about the hottest teams in December. The hottest
teams are always the healthiest teams because they're always they
played to get yeah, their majority of the year to
get going. So if you can do that and stay healthy,

(19:04):
it's huge, all right.

Speaker 1 (19:06):
Now, Week four coming up, Caleb Williams, quarterback first a
number one overall draft pick this past year. It's gonna
be a tough one. What do you like about this matchup?
And how do you have to find ways to limit
him in this one?

Speaker 2 (19:19):
I mean, the play doesn't begin until it breaks down
when you're going against Caleb, right, Yes, And I like
seeing them have to throw at fifty plus times against Indianapolis.
But I'm also afraid of them throwing at fifty plus
times against the Rams, if that makes sense.

Speaker 5 (19:33):
Right, Yeah, I agree to disagree at the same time,
but we'll go ahead.

Speaker 4 (19:39):
I'll explain.

Speaker 2 (19:40):
Well, I have great respect for their skill group. I
think I can't come up with another instance where a
top quarterback has walked into a situation as favorable as
Caleb has at his skill positions. Now, his offensive line
is poorse and that's where I think the Rams can
really dictate terms in this game. But I don't know.
I feel like if he throws at fifty times, it's

(20:01):
gonna mean good things for the Rams. I feel like
he's gonna give you a chance to go out and
make an impact play on defense. And it especially means
that they're probably not leaning on you with their running game,
which I think there's still the upside potential for them
to be impactful with the bats that they have.

Speaker 5 (20:13):
Yeah, there's been a lot of chatter out of Chicago
about not running the football. They need to run it
more so expect them to come in very similar like Arizona's,
like we gotta get Marvin going.

Speaker 4 (20:23):
We need to cover Marvin then with three people that
if they got to get him going.

Speaker 5 (20:26):
So understand, we're gonna have to load the box because
they're gonna try to run the ball and if they
get success early, they're gonna stick with it. But the
challenge for me this week, and what I said I
somewhat disagreed, was it's.

Speaker 4 (20:38):
Time for you to get to the quarterback.

Speaker 5 (20:40):
You have more than opportunity to get to the You're
gonna the player is gonna break down.

Speaker 4 (20:44):
It always does with Caleb. That's where he's at his best.

Speaker 5 (20:47):
But it's time for you to not miss the tackle
like you did on Rock Party, or not miss the
sack like you did on Kyler Murray, or you gotta
convert this week. Right, There's been three weeks of us
not converting. It's time to convert these, especially against these
mobile quarterbacks. You convert on a couple of those sacks,
they start to come in bunches. Then all of a sudden,
you have confidence. Right, And again, I think the biggest thing,

(21:08):
and I'm gonna keep using the word confidence, is when
you play in the league and you're young, you gain
confidence by having success. The Brock Party play that lasted
like forty five seconds, you were going I thought I
was gonna give us the water.

Speaker 4 (21:19):
You were out of breath because he was just scrambling.

Speaker 5 (21:21):
All around, no question, as you should, but you had
two times to get them, right, you had, there was
two times to get them. Bradon Fist had him early,
you didn't get them. And then I want to say,
deared versus was coming back. He probably could have went
around the tackle or around that old line instead of
going underneath. But you had a chance to get him
in those situations. If you were to get him down,

(21:42):
you be more confident, like, Okay, go ahead, scramble around. Well,
this is something that we have to use because we
do have Kyler Murray in our division right that you
want to be able to. You do have Brock Purty
that moves around as well. If you can convert some
of those into sacks, confidence.

Speaker 4 (21:55):
Starts to go up.

Speaker 5 (21:56):
You talked about the O line especially, I wanted the
left tackle is you know, very similar what we had
and we want to.

Speaker 2 (22:03):
Do both tackles questionable so far this week in press.

Speaker 5 (22:06):
So if you can find a way to get to
Caleb and get him down, the confidence starts to rise,
and then you want him to throw the ball fifty times,
because now you.

Speaker 4 (22:15):
Know you're not tired. When you're getting sacks. It's like, oh,
oh I get a.

Speaker 6 (22:18):
Hey, let me get another one, come on third down,
let me get back out there, right, And so I think,
I think again it's just the confidence of making play
after play after play will definitely rise this week if they.

Speaker 1 (22:28):
Get an opportunity with kind of just going back. I
never're talking about the confidence on our end, but just
considering what Caleb Williams is able to do in week three,
having over three hundred and fifty passing yards, being able
to connect with Rome Odunze. When you think about just
kind of their dynamic that they're building over there, how
dangerous could that be for those two, two rookie players,

(22:49):
two top draft picks who could have a very bright
future in this space. What are you seeing from that?
The taste that we've gotten from that kind of there's.

Speaker 2 (22:57):
A ton of like latent potential there. And I hope
what we didn't see last week as the start of
something special between those two. You get Keenan Allen backed
in the mix, like another week on time on task,
like they can be a problem, but I still hope
that the version of the Bears, we're seeing as a
group that's turning it over more than they're scoring touchdowns.

Speaker 5 (23:16):
And I also want to say this, Remember the Colts
should have been up like two touchdowns at one point,
but they get down there in the red zone or
the five yard line and he throws that crazy pick right, So,
not turn the ball over offensively puts more pressure on
the Chicago Bears. Forcing them to have to drive the
length of the field against your defense puts more pressure
on them. When they get some energy and some you know,

(23:38):
some turnovers to which the defense causes allows him the
more opportunity. Now, yes, they're gonna be really good. Like
you can just see it already. They have something going on.
He looks for him when he scrambles. He doesn't look
for DJ Moore, He looks for Dooonda. So yeah, that's
gonna be scary. But we got to make.

Speaker 4 (23:55):
Sure that it's scary after this week.

Speaker 5 (23:57):
Right, make sure when you do scramblehen you start to
see them scram around, you have to plaster and stick
with your guy and let them go.

Speaker 2 (24:03):
It's not a comfortable test for week four, but I
think it's exactly the one the Rams need in this
moment right for all the things you described, and also
I think you said already maybe the best defense they
face this year.

Speaker 4 (24:13):
Oh yeah, for sure.

Speaker 2 (24:14):
I mean it's I was not expecting this to be
as much of a defense forward Bears group as they
have been through the first month of the season.

Speaker 5 (24:21):
Yeah, I mean there, and then they present different challenges.
Jalen Johnson is a very good, sneaky corner and the
way that they handled Houston's offense was insane to see
how the Bears beat them up, right, And so I
think this is a great test, a great challenge for
Sean and this offense of how are we going to

(24:42):
attack them right?

Speaker 4 (24:43):
How we're going to put them in position? Do they
have they seen guys like we have right on top
of that?

Speaker 5 (24:48):
And this may be an issue or not, But if
it's windy, it's going to be a problem. It's a
different type of Chicago is a different place, and we've
only been there when it's cold, which is you know,
I'm happy we get to go now and have to
be cold, But when it's windy it could be an issue.

Speaker 2 (25:02):
Can I tell you on something though? Is there a
school of thought where paradoxically the Rams are actually a
harder team to prepare for this week than they were
a week ago or even when they had Cooper Cup.
Oh yeah, like, now you gotta worry about two two out,
we'll running past you. Now you got to worry about
Hunter Long being in there at the point of attacking
a two tight end set, Like, what what are they

(25:23):
expecting from the Rams? It's a little bit more multiple,
if not complex.

Speaker 5 (25:27):
You have Parkinson too, Kobe Parkinson, who had a couple
of big catches and then they had the big drop. Right,
if he catches that ball, that's a first down. There's
more what happens when you lose your stars. There's not
guys you can key on, right. I remember this. I
don't know if they still do it, but they used
to put game breakers up at the beginning of the week.
These are the guys that we have to stop in
order to win, right, Normally that'd be pookin Nakoupa. This year,

(25:49):
Cooper Cup, Matthew Stafford, Kyron Williams. Well, now it's just
Kyron on there in Matthew Stafford. You don't know about
the other positions, which means you can't key and there's
not a guy to key on to say we want
to run this coverage to stop this guy. It's just
we got to run this coverage and we got to
be in these spots, right, And so I think that
that puts a lot of pressure on the defense. I'll
be able to kill on one guy in the passing

(26:10):
game to say, Okay, Cooper Cup, we know he runs
these routes, this is what we want to stop.

Speaker 4 (26:15):
Well, no, no, no, it's not like that anymore.

Speaker 5 (26:16):
You have a bunch of guys who can run different
routes that can make different plays.

Speaker 1 (26:20):
When we look ahead now, and I know that we've
kind of dived in through just different parts and we've
kind of hit on some keys to victory, But if
you had to really kind of key in on something
specific when it comes to this matchup the Rams and
the Bears in Chicago, we've talked about it. Best case scenario,
it's Chicago and September, not Chicago in December. Wind could
be a factor, but I think hopefully weather should be

(26:42):
pretty good. Just upfront, what would you say is one
of the biggest things. Let's start with you JB. Just
kind of going into this one that the Rams are
going to have to focus in on and do well.

Speaker 2 (26:53):
I know it's top of mind for the fan base,
and that is playing with the lead for once. Like
the Rams have fallen behind by two touchdowns and all
three games so far, and in that sense, they're very
fortunate to be one and two. Bears are in the
same boat. I think the Bears have led for less
than eight minutes combined this season. So there hasn't been
a team in the history of football that hasn't wanted
to start fast. But I think the Rams, especially in

(27:15):
these circumstances, sure would be nice to go play for
a league with a lead for the first time this season.

Speaker 5 (27:21):
I think winning the turnover battle is gonna be huge.
I know that's always like the easiest one to do,
but you're gonna have opportunity officially to turn the ball over.

Speaker 4 (27:31):
And that's going to be important.

Speaker 5 (27:32):
And then on the other side of it, they do
a great job the ball over, so you got to
make sure you protect the football and don't throw interceptions
and don't do those things because again, you're playing a
rookie quarterback and you want They exposed him a lot
last week with fifty passes plus pass that's a lot
of exposure to a quarterback. So if you can find

(27:54):
a way to get him back in that number again,
you have.

Speaker 4 (27:57):
What you want.

Speaker 2 (27:58):
Yeah, they've got the lowest passer rating allowed this season,
I think because of all those takeaways in their secondary.
And I'm just gonna try and speak this into existence
here in between the Horns. The Rams are due for
a non offensive touchdown. They're overdue, and now that special
teams has turned a corner, I really believe that this
can be the week, if not on teams, maybe with

(28:19):
a defensive touchdown. It's been since Christmas against the Broncos
a couple of years ago since they've gotten points, gotten
a touchdown anywhere except their offense. So I'm hoping this
is the week.

Speaker 1 (28:31):
Stafford is twelve and nine all time against the Bears.
Is there something going into a magic where you're like,
I got this? I mean, he's always got I should
say that, but just knowing how good you are against
a specific.

Speaker 2 (28:43):
Team, Yeah, I mean, I don't think anyone in Chicago's
happy to see Matthew Stafford at Soldier Field because even
when he was playing with sub five hundred Lions teams,
he's come in there and found a way.

Speaker 4 (28:53):
Yeah, I agree.

Speaker 5 (28:54):
I think it's you know, I don't know if they
talked about what hotel you should stay in and all
that stuff, But I think when you have a familiarity
with the city and the hotel and the people, Like
when we used to go to India every year, I'd
be like, we're at the Marriotte right here, bro, Like,
I know what room I'm gonna be in, I know
how I'm gonna sleep tonight. I'm good. Here goes a
buck eighty. You know what's coming, right. But then if

(29:17):
we were to go to like to New England, I
don't feel the best. This is not the Marriott that
I'm used to. Maybe we stay at a boutique hotel.
Food maybe not be the same. So I think when
you play those teams in your division, you're always.

Speaker 4 (29:31):
You're comfortable because you go there all the every year.

Speaker 5 (29:33):
So hopefully it is the same hotel, same food, same people,
same place, same locker room.

Speaker 4 (29:40):
You go out there and make place.

Speaker 2 (29:41):
And hopefully same protection. Because I just think we got
a glimpse in week three of what his partnership with
McVeigh can mean in year four. Right, the first two
weeks we were robbed of that because there were just
turnstiles up front and he was under extreme duress. When
you can get him to three Mississippi, I just think

(30:01):
he's out of place right now where he has threaded
the needle perfectly between being aggressive, being lethal, but also
being protective of the possession. And this is a game
where if he checks to the right things, if he
makes the right decisions, and if you can keep him upright,
I believe good things are going to happen.

Speaker 5 (30:20):
You have to give a shout out to Bowlimmer and
Logan Bruss for stepping in no doubt and doing an
awesome job against hard Graves and all like.

Speaker 3 (30:28):
And even did it's coming off the bench like that,
I was so nervous and and and credit to the
staff and the developing Logan Brush from what he was
when he first got here to where he is now,
where he can step in and start and play a
whole game.

Speaker 5 (30:42):
That is huge, the development the Rams have done with it.
Like you said, they're guys developing pass rushers, but o' lineman,
DB's linebackers, Like, let's remember, these aren't guys that normally
play all the time that they played with. These are
guys that are more special teams guys or reserve role
guys that stepped in and had a huge role in
that game.

Speaker 2 (31:02):
This is where the Rams wanted to get to right
with Matthew Stafford, Circumstances don't have to be perfect for him.
He can elevate the other ten around him. He just
has to know who those ten are going to be. Right.
Like you saw in that second half, he can bring
out the best into too. He can bring out the
best in Jordan Winnington and DeMarcus Robinson. You know he can.
He can deal with Logan Bruss and aj protecting his

(31:25):
He just needs to know here on Thursday that that's
how it's going to be this weekend, because that's what
every quarterback needs, right Yeah.

Speaker 5 (31:31):
I mean the Tyler Johnson when he doesn't go up
the field and he runs over to him, he's like, hey, hey,
I need you to do this some some something.

Speaker 4 (31:41):
And then as he walking off, he was like, dap
me up. You're good. Right.

Speaker 5 (31:44):
That's leadership, because if you think about it, most quarterbacks
will be.

Speaker 4 (31:48):
Like what are you doing?

Speaker 2 (31:49):
Why didn't you do this?

Speaker 4 (31:50):
He's like, hey, we're good, don't worry about it. And
that was that was a big play early in the game.

Speaker 5 (31:54):
If he's able to scramble and make that connection, that
drive keeps going. And so to me, you talked about
the leadership and then the ability to develop the young
guys to play is huge.

Speaker 2 (32:04):
You know, he's the comeback king for a reason, right,
whether it's game winning drives, fourth quarter comebacks. I just
hope for the Rams sake that this isn't one of
those weeks where he's got to go get it in
the fourth quarter if need be, he's your guy. I
just hope this is the week that the Rams play
four quarters of complimentary football and he can lean on
the Chicago defense with his running game and kind of
shorten the game and get out of there with a

(32:25):
win as opposed to needing to have a flair for
the dramatic.

Speaker 1 (32:27):
Yeah, I think, well that is going to be the
biggest thing. The hope is they can start faster, get
things going, not play from behind, and they have a
leader in Matthew Stafford who has been nothing but lights out.

Speaker 2 (32:36):
Important question for you as our guest hosts, because this
has come up and I think we need your opinion
on this. Does this really look like a Reese's peanut
butter Cup to you because our audience, Yes, our audience
is pretty sure that that's it. It's a big piece.

Speaker 1 (32:52):
It's the ridges on the side, but they're delicious, so
I think it's a perfect coffee table.

Speaker 2 (32:59):
I think we all need an nil deal.

Speaker 4 (33:03):
But I knew that him writing not not.

Speaker 2 (33:05):
A verbal this Halloween season, I needed.

Speaker 4 (33:07):
Him writing, not a verbal agreement.

Speaker 1 (33:09):
I love it spooky in here. All right. Well, that's
a wrap for this episode of Between the Horns, presented
to you by our Southern California to a yoga deelers.
It's gonna be a fun one coming off of what
it was an electric performance against the Niners and hopefully
can carry that momentum into the Chicago Bears. So from
Kirsten Watson, J B. Long, Maurice Jones, Drew, we thank
you for joining and watching today.

Speaker 2 (33:31):
And go Clinch tonight.

Speaker 1 (33:32):
Oh fingers crossed. I hope So I'm a Dodgers fan now, Yes,
