Speaker 1 (00:06):
From the Toyota Patio here at SOFI Stadium side of
this week fifteen show down between the Detroit Lions and
your Los Angeles Rams. Welcome to a new episode of
Between the Horns, presented by your Southern California Toyota Dealers.
I'm JB. Long with my buddies Maurice Jones, Drew and
DeMarco Farr. Four games to go, the Rams control their
destiny in the NFC West and atop the NFC standings.

(00:28):
Oh this is this is the good stuff. I can't
look at him right now. If he brings up standings,
I'm walking off the show. Really, Detroit, Detroit, Detroit.

Speaker 2 (00:36):
I feel the same way. I feel the exact same way.

Speaker 3 (00:39):
We had a conversation before you got here, and now
we're gonna dive into that. But the first thing that
that's made me feel good, got me all excited, was
control your own destiny.

Speaker 2 (00:47):
Yeah, that's what I like.

Speaker 3 (00:48):
I don't want I don't want anyone else to have
any control of what I'm doing. When I look at
all these scenarios, ir mouse to Marco, it says Rams
can clench with a win, not with the win plus
this or plus that. No we can control everything that
we need to control, and that, to me is the
most important thing.

Speaker 2 (01:05):
Is how about control the Lions? How about clinch That's
what I'm saying. Yeah, how about clinch penny sewell and
get off and make a play. How about that? They're
pretty good? Yeah, take two.

Speaker 1 (01:14):
Welcome to a week fifteen edition of Between the Horns
present about your Southern California toy dealers. With a win
against the Detroit Lions here at SOFI Stadium this Sunday,
your Rams can clinch a playoffs.

Speaker 2 (01:23):
He did it again. There you go. Look, it's gonna
be tough, it's gonna be fun, But this is what
you've been building for. When you think about it, I mean,
this is the NBA has an nd season tournament. You
might as well call this an n season tournament that
the next two weeks will determine pretty much everything, not
just for you, but for the rest of the league.
And I'm glad it's Detroit and then followed by that
next team. But it's tough. Your focus has to be

(01:45):
on football. Your focus has to be on you and
what you guys do, forget about the opponent. But this
is a fun time of year to be a Rans fan.

Speaker 1 (01:51):
It's like a dress rehearsal for January.

Speaker 2 (01:53):
It is.

Speaker 1 (01:53):
I mean, this Sunday's game is like a divisional round
contest that you earn the right to host, and we
don't want to have to go on the road for
the NFC championship game. But like ram Seahawks right now
projects as the NFC Championship game.

Speaker 2 (02:05):
So I completely agree.

Speaker 3 (02:07):
And when you the funny part is when you look
at what Detroit does and how they play on both
sides of the ball, It's a very physical ball game,
which the playoffs are always going to be right and
demarc you talked about being built for it, Detroit is
banged up on the defensive side.

Speaker 2 (02:22):
They have tight end issues.

Speaker 3 (02:23):
This is a great opportunity for you to go out
there and continue to play well like you did in
Arizona and really kind of put your stamp on it.
And I listen, at the end of the day, if
you if you play well in this matchup, I think
that you're going to be happy with the result that
comes Thursday, because this is going to be a great
setup for Thursday. Very similar team that wants to run

(02:44):
the football, very explosive receivers, physical defense, right, and so
it's just every game from here on out is going
to prepare you for what you're going to have to
deal with when you get to the second season.

Speaker 1 (02:55):
You know, another way it's like a playoff game, is
Detroit is desperate. I mean, this is not a nation
game for them, but when you talk to some Lines fans,
they feel like they have to win this game because
right now they're on the outside looking in. They lose
this one. Three games to go, it's going to be
a tough pathway to the playoffs. So if you want
to play a role in sending the lines to Cabo
here you go.

Speaker 3 (03:14):
Well, listen, how many times have we gone to Detroit
and guys sent home? It's personal, no disrespect, it's just
personal out here right now.

Speaker 2 (03:20):
Like, yeah, I remember the last one.

Speaker 3 (03:22):
Yeah, I remember they hit on Stafford that wasn't called
right maybe, yeah, Like this is not one of those games.
But this is a you want to play football, let's play.
And I think that's what the mantra is going to
be this week where last week goes more. Let's get
back on track, let's figure it out. Like you said,
it's not about them, but it is kind of as
well this time of year. We always try not to

(03:42):
take for granted the privilege of playing meaningful football in December,
and we mentioned it going off the air in Arizona. Right,
seventh ten win season in nine years on the job
for Sean mcfaith. They're on the verge of clinching a
playoff spot for this seventh time. The challenge this year
was to get more explosive in the running game. Right,
you wake up here in mid December and you've got

(04:03):
the best running game you've had since Todd Gurley in
twenty eighteen. Basically, another task was to get more efficient
in the red zone. Here we are with four games
to go, and you could make the case the Rams
have the best red zone offense in the league. So
much good and we don't know where it goes from here.
You can't always, you know, dictate the outcomes in January.

(04:24):
But my goodness, everything the Rams did this offseason to
put themselves in this position came to fruition.

Speaker 1 (04:32):
Now go cash it in.

Speaker 2 (04:33):
Well.

Speaker 3 (04:33):
Also, let's talk about getting wins early, right, starting faster.
I thought that was a big one. Stacking wins, Like
if you start slow like last year, you're not in
this predicament you maybe where the Lions are trying to
fight your way into it.

Speaker 2 (04:44):
Here.

Speaker 3 (04:44):
You've done a great job of getting some tough wins early.
We were just talking about it again the Colts for example.
Imagine like we played the Colts when they were at
their highest. Now they lost Daniel Jones and they're trying
to figure their way out. Like so, you've played some
really meaningful football early in the year, and you've played
really a football and you talked about a JB on
the broadcast that the Rams have been in had a
chance to win every game they played in. What other

(05:07):
team can say that, right? What other team can say
every game we've played, we've had a chance to win.

Speaker 2 (05:12):
The Cardinals, but they lost every single game they were
they lost. But you're gonna make me knock on some wood, man.
I mean, you know, we're talking about stuff that haven't
happened yet. But I'm definitely with you on that. Everything
that you tried to get better at they have, Uh,
the inclusion of these tight ends, which changes so much.
This was the first game. Just going back to Arizona

(05:33):
for a hot minute, how many times did you say
Buddha Baker first time ever? Where he wasn't where he
wasn't a factor. I mean, when you put those three
tight ends out there against him, now you have the advantage,
it takes away the advantage for him. So there's so
much more to this offense. It has expanded. And like
you said, when you get in the red zone, you've
got two running backs that you have to worry about
and think about and respect. Then you've got receivers to

(05:55):
deal with and tight ends. That one to Parkinson that
he fit in there. I was standing right there next
to Sean McVay. He went right to DeVante Adams and
said that was because of you. And when you go
back and watch that tape, there are three guys watching them.
Their eyes all go to him, and the ball laces
right between them. So there's so much of a threat
and they're so I guess multiple it really on offense,

(06:17):
you can attack. The one thing I am worried about
with Detroit is Detroit can score with anybody. Yes, this
could turn out. I mean it could be like that
Monday night game in the Coliseum where it's an offensive explosion,
but there's great defense in the middle of it. So
there's plays being made. So I mean This is one
of those things. No matter who's in the lead or
how much you have a lead, never lose sight of

(06:38):
what's behind you. Because Jared Goff knows where the end
zone is, you know what I mean, and so do Stafford.
So this is gonna be a fun, fun game, and
it's going to go down to the last touch.

Speaker 1 (06:46):
Let's start there. You see this as a shootout.

Speaker 2 (06:48):
I do, I do. It just depends on what Detroit brings. Defensively.
They're so banged up, but you go back and look
at the Rams defense that first drive. They forgot who
McBride was for a hot minute. Once they figured it out,
locked everything up. But Detroit's a different animal. They've got
two good running backs that can beat you. They've got
two good receivers, and like I said, Jared Goff is

(07:08):
one of the best in the game, and they've got
great tackles, so they're gonna score points. Matthew Stafford playing
the way he's playing with that confidence level, you're gonna
need every bet of that versus Detroit. I don't care
if it looks like a dangerous pass. I love it
when he throws caution to win, because good things happen
so I think this has the chance to be one
of those shootout type performances with a lot of defense

(07:29):
mixed in between.

Speaker 3 (07:31):
I will say this, this is gonna be the fastest
team the Rams will probably ever haven't seen all year.
Right with the speed of Jamison Williams and Jamiir Gibbs,
that's his different type of speed. So you're gonna have
to count for that. Yeah, well yeah, penn a school.
But I think that I think that I think those
things nullify a little bit with the defensive line.

Speaker 2 (07:47):
But like.

Speaker 3 (07:50):
Forced Jared to throw outside that the numbers, that's like
that's always been the game plan. Like, don't don't let
them get the little gimmes inside. Force these guys to
have to catch outs and things on the outside, which
is going to force Jerid have to hitch and throw
the ball and then maybe you get you have a
chance to get there right like, but you have to
stop the run early. You have to force Jamiir Gibbs
or run inside. You can't let them like, you can't

(08:12):
give them a crease, you can't let them bounce it.
You got to force them to run inside. You have
to tackle David Montgomery and then you literally have to
force Jared to throw out. So that's the recipe of
beating the Detroit Lions. The teams that have beating them,
that's what they've done, right, They forced these guys have
to throw outside.

Speaker 1 (08:26):
And so I would just add interior pressure, which is
oh yeah.

Speaker 3 (08:29):
Yes, yeah, interior pressure for sure. But offensively, I just
see the Rams. If you just run, if you execute,
you're fine.

Speaker 1 (08:38):
Let me come back to that. Let's go back to
contending with maybe the only other offense that's got as
much octane as you do. Right now, Okay, Defending the
run probably the other element I should have listed or
included when I was talking about being more explosive in
the Rams running game, being more efficient in the red zone.
Stopping the early down run was another big talk point

(09:00):
this offseason. It's why Puna Ford is a ram landman.
Has obviously been instrumental in that. This is the moment
where I think you try and pass the final exam
this week and next week in Seattle? Are you ready
for January? In that regard, this week is the final.

Speaker 2 (09:16):
This week is the one that you stay up all
night settying for.

Speaker 3 (09:18):
Oh yeah, we got a Cram question. We have to
have a group session. We need to cram here. Put
a ford. You have to own the A gaps. You
have to own the A gaps. If you don't own
the A gaps and make the plays like you made
in Carolina, in the Running Game and in Arizona, there's
gonna be some problems because these guys, no matter who
they are, David Montgomery or jamiir give, if they could
take it at the distance, they have the speed to
do it and.

Speaker 2 (09:39):
So destroy blocks. Yes, that's that's number one with Chris Shula.
And I like some of the stuff Dallas did, not everything,
because I think they scored forty four points against Dallas, right,
But I like their approach. They sent a lot of
five men and forced one on ones, which is great.
So if I'm Chris Shula, I don't feed Jared Verse
all this week, really and go eat absolutely and I

(10:01):
don't care if you make plays, just wreck them. Do
you know he hurt another tackle, He hurt another one.
That's the fourth one. He's hurt on a bull rush
where you try to anchor and something just goes wrong
and you walk off to the sideliner or limp.

Speaker 1 (10:13):
I'm glad you said that because I remember talking this
summer about all right, he's got speed to power. How
about just like bending the edge and being a speedy
rush guy. Maybe in theory that sounds good, but I
want Jared Verus to be Jared Verse. I want him
to do what makes him special, and that's what you're
talking about.

Speaker 2 (10:28):
So it's so funny when you watch him so first
he bullrushes tackles and they have to set on it,
and watching them go through that is it's hilarious to me.
The other thing is is when you get a puller,
a tight end especially that knows that he has to
come down on this dude, man, they telegraph it from
a mile away because they don't want to get hit
by him. So that's the type of stuff that makes
running backs bounce, makes guards pull up, and gives you

(10:51):
just that extra oms so you can get to the football.
So be that guy. Plus the interior pressure. Like I said,
I hope Braden Fist doesn't get another sack all year.
You know why, will be chasing that carrot right into
Levi Stadium. I mean, this dude will just wreck shop
and Kobe Turner two Poona Ford is my favorite player
on this football team. I swear to God, you can
teach tape off, how he gets off, blocks, how he

(11:13):
takes on, how smart he is, how he reads it,
where his hands are, and then how he disengages and
makes it makes plays. If you want to stop Jamar
Gibbs or whoever, first of all, control the a gaps.
Second of all, watch poone of Ford get off the
football and disengage and make plays.

Speaker 3 (11:26):
So this is this is I went back and watched
the Green Bay game two days ago, right just to
see kind of what Micah parsons. They literally just destroyed people.
In the running game. They were like, like, you're gonna
get some runs off here or there. But when they
when they knew that he was getting the ball, Jamir Gibbs,
it was like, we're not rushing, We're not rushing on
edges at all, We're going through people, and they just

(11:46):
they just dismantled them on It was it was a
third it was Thanksgiving right when they played, Yeah, and
they dominated that game. And so to me, that's what
I see in the rams is you have to force
Jared Golf to be one dimension. You have to force
Dan Camp to go on those fourth downs and then
collapse to pocket. You know he's gonna run the ball
on fourth down, so you have to collapse the line

(12:07):
of scrimmage. And that comes down to set in a
vertical edge. And what I mean by a vertical edge
is not running outside to make sure you can keep
outside contained. Like where I line up is where the
edge starts and it won't go any further from this point.
That's what's going to be important in this game.

Speaker 1 (12:21):
What element does this play in the matchup? This is
a different Lions roster than the Rams have seen in
the past few iterations because they've only got one roster
tight end right now. Anthony Ferkser is the only guy
they may add and supplement by Sunday. They do play
a six offensive lineman in that role, but no Sam Laporta,
no Brock Right. They've got the portfolio of receivers though,
And so if I'm a Rams fan saying I don't

(12:42):
love how Michael Wilson got off last week for the
Arizona Cardinals, this is the weekend where I'm worried that
the Rams secondary might be susceptible to the depth and
the speed of the line's portfolio.

Speaker 2 (12:54):
What say you, you know I have confidence in em
manual Forbes. I know that's where most people go to
when they think that the secondary is struggling or whatever
it is. The guy's got talent, you know this, But
you know how to play corner in this league with
the receivers that you're playing against, any laps and technique,
the balls right over your head and it's probably in
the end zone. So this is the way the Rams

(13:15):
play defense. They get after you if the ball gets out,
if you're not in the right position, you probably have
a chance to make plays. But I would bet on
him more often than not. But it has to come
down to pressure up front. And you know how much
Jared Goff loves a collapsing pocket. He hates it right,
So if you collapse the pocket, if you get around him,
and I'll say this for the corners, do a good
job early so you can do a great job later.

(13:36):
That would be my thing. Get incrementally closer to whoever
you're playing. You cannot cover either one of these guys
one on one. They're just too good, but you can
get slowly closer as the game gets longer and as
Jared Goff gets more effected. And this is the other
thing I liked about what Dallas did. They hit the receivers,
whether they had the ball or not. Keep making them
pick themselves up off the ground. They are fast, they

(13:57):
are tough, they got great hands, but they are human,
get tired, and they get beat up. So keep trying
to beat them up. It'll slow them down for the
fourth be good or at least so you can be
great later on, I.

Speaker 3 (14:07):
Would say, I would say for the DBS, it's less
about coverage and more about tackling when they catch the ball,
because that's where their Lions beat you. They're gonna throw
a fifteen yard in route, but then Jameson was gonna
take it one hundred and thirty yards to the house
like he's gonna outrun everyone to the corner. Or they're
gonna throw They're gonna throw a six yard hits to Amara,
same Brown on an option route and he's gonna break
two or three tackles and get thirteen. You just can't

(14:29):
allow that, right, You have to tackle as soon as
they catch the ball, tackle them, and which is gonna
allow the pass rush to continue to get better? Uh.
There the Lions when they when they're at their best,
well two things. When they're at their best, Jamiir Gibbs
playing wide receiver and he gets a mismatch, which we'll
talk about that in a second. But it's all run
after catch, screen game, quick end, slant deep, whatever it

(14:51):
may be, and it's catch the ball, get vertical right,
and so that's gonna be issue. But the other problem
I was gonna say, is Jamiir Gibbs playing wide receiver,
who's gonna cover that?

Speaker 1 (14:59):
Is that like McCaffrey type back off.

Speaker 2 (15:01):
That's problem.

Speaker 3 (15:02):
That's like they're now putting him out at wide receiver motion,
a man running different route combinations with him trying to
find a way to get him the ball in space,
and so that means your linebackers are going to have
to tackle or McCullough is gonna have to cover and
tackle in space.

Speaker 2 (15:15):
That's what I would do if I had a lack
of tight ends, I just move people around and get
the matchups I want.

Speaker 1 (15:19):
That way, I would just daydreaming about if I could
wave a magic wand and make Quinton Lake healthy for
this day.

Speaker 2 (15:26):
Yeah this game, Yeah, like the modern day game. That's all.
This is a modern day I'm a ros Saint rovers
Quentin Lake, Who are the Seattle guys, they look about
like I'm on Ross Saint Brown. There's Lockett. There was
another one who came before him. They are all these
little five to ten receivers that just give you problems.
He's another one. The only difference is he plays in Detroit.
I was the guy went to Stanford. Remember, Yeah, there

(15:47):
was a couple of them. Doug Baldwin was my god.
They're all five ten and just give you problems. Run
after catch.

Speaker 1 (15:53):
Same guy the one they got right now, and Jayson's
pretty bad.

Speaker 2 (15:55):
Yeah, no doubt him next week.

Speaker 1 (15:58):
Anything else on that side of the ball. Before I
switch to the Legion of Whom, which is a pretty
slick nickname.

Speaker 2 (16:03):
Legion of Whom. Yeah, we're good. Yeah, all right.

Speaker 1 (16:07):
So the offense for the Lions right there with the
Rams twenty nine points per game since Week twelve, Dan
Campbell has taken over the play calling duties. Let's talk
about their defense now, which is banged up, right.

Speaker 2 (16:17):
They're susceptible. They're banged up, but Godly hutch And is
still tearing the LD.

Speaker 1 (16:22):
Yeah, they can still get after the quarterback.

Speaker 2 (16:24):
And that's what they're gonna do.

Speaker 3 (16:25):
They're gonna play press man and They're gonna try to
force your quarterback to hold the ball long enough so
hutches you can get there.

Speaker 2 (16:30):
That's their game.

Speaker 1 (16:31):
They still play man this week, even as they are.

Speaker 3 (16:33):
They they did they That's who they are, That's who
Dan Campbell wants to be aggressive. He's gonna blitz and
that's why play action passing will be so important, right
to be able to have max protection and get guys
out on routes. But you have to This is gonna
be uh, it's it's it's the offensive lineman's dream. Oh yeah,
you can't be called. We don't want to hear your
name called here. If you're you're uh Lark Jackson, Well

(16:57):
your your name can't be called.

Speaker 2 (16:58):
You have to do what you've done.

Speaker 1 (17:00):
I mean, I mean, let's think back to Week one
last year, right, the position the Rams were in at tackle.
Those are dire straits to where they are now. They've
spent what a combined fifth round pick on their current
starting tackles and they're bawling.

Speaker 2 (17:16):
Jackson is a godsend. He's like Nate Landman, you got
but how about Glendon? So good coming in, but he
was ready. He's been an understudy for years you're ready
for your role, get out there. And his demeanor hadn't
changed a bit. That's what I love about him. You
can tell it. Just the light came on all of
a sudden and he was ready to start, and he
got reps to get started. But this is what was
funny about watching this tape. Tell me if you guys

(17:37):
this was the trap game in Arizona, because I'm watching
this tape versus the offense versus their defense, the Cardinal defense,
and I got mad because everything was working, everything was easy.
But here was the adjustment from the Cardinals. They just
backed off and bet that Matthew Stafford couldn't stay patient.
Yeah you know what I mean. So I would bet
if Detroit wants to come out and do what they do,

(17:58):
which is get after you and try to be man coverage.
Once you start losing to Puka and they start making
you pay and Davante and things are moving, I think
they'll do what the Cardinals did. They'll drop seven, back
off and force you to be patient and hope mat
Matthew Stafford is greedy that day. You think that's gonna happen?
Have you do? You know who their head coach is
you're gonna have to know, what I mean, if you're

(18:18):
getting beat, if you're good, they do that again, Dallas,
you're gonna have to I think, Yeah, I don't know.

Speaker 1 (18:23):
The Rams have a pretty demonstrated ability and willingness to
mash you at the running game too, if you want
to play light you.

Speaker 3 (18:30):
When you watch the Lions, like against the Cowboys, they
were like, oh, we know Ceedee Lamb and George Pickens,
they're gonna get theirs, but we're okay with that. We're
gonna still continue to get after you and blitz and
do different things. So I just if you watch the
tape and see how they play, it's just they're gonna
be aggressive. That's what they That's who they always been, right, Like, right,
you can't change who you are two years ago. You

(18:52):
were in the NFC Championship game, right, and so it's
like that's what that's what we were to get there.
Like I expect Dan Campbell to go for it on
fourth down. He will every time.

Speaker 2 (19:00):
I hope you're aggressive on defense when you're short handed,
that's gonna be fun.

Speaker 1 (19:03):
They're in an incredible fourth down drought right now, though,
So that's one of the weird things about looking at
and scouting this Detroit team is they they're still trying
to be who they've always been. But you can see
why they're on the outside of the playoff picture looking
in right now because it has not gone their way.

Speaker 3 (19:17):
And that's the part of being aggressive, right. When you're aggressive,
you have to live and die with it, Right, There's
gonna be times when you're gonna be twelve of twelve
on fourth down or eleven of twelve on fourth down
right now, where they like, oh of eight right on
fourth down in the last what three or four weeks, yep,
And that's they lose to Philly in Philly because they
didn't take a field goal. They went for a touchdown

(19:38):
on like a fourth and two from the three or
whatever it might have been, and they didn't get it.
And that field goal they would have had would have
made that game a one score game. They could have
went down and scored late, right, but otherwise they got
a PI. But like, when you're aggressive, if that's who
you are, if that's your DNA, you have to say
you have to stay with that. And that's why I
believe defensively, yeah, that's what they're gonna be. They're gonna
be an aggressive defense. They're gonna hold and they're gonna

(20:01):
try to whatever they can to get Hutcheson a chance
to get to the quarterback.

Speaker 2 (20:04):
And he's gonna get there. If you getting those obvious
passing downs, you respect him. He is a great pass rusher.

Speaker 1 (20:09):
But nobody's been better at staying out of those obvious
passing downs save for one game, save for one game
that was against Seattle, than the Los Angeles Rams. And
I think it's kind of maybe time to take a
deep dive on the state of this running game. We
talked about it off the top. This is as good
as it's been since probably twenty eighteen for the Rams
rushing attack. The offensive line is winning, they're getting removal,

(20:31):
and you've got two backs basically taking a fifty to
fifty split.

Speaker 2 (20:34):
Now I'm Jay and tight ends and tight ends if
help the running game big time, good good, big a
bag time. So it's funny bringing up the Buddha Baker thing.
H t Ferg got himself a pancake on Buddha Baker
frame that that's awesome. Colby Parkinson has assumed that inline
tight end role and he's been blocking well Davis Allen

(20:55):
got a few pancakes in there, plus the old line
have They've done a good job of sifting through and
getting the right guy and giving these running backs a
chance to be successful. But you know, Kyen Williams is Kiren.
I mean, I don't trust any running back more than
him for a complete down running back or an all
three down. But Blake Korm is on one right now.
Yeah he is. See look at that face. He knows

(21:15):
what he is on one right now, and I would
I would ride that, but you have to be you
have to massage that out, not to mess it up.
To see what I mean, See he's on one right now.
Go ahead and ask the question, JB. I'm looking at
it from a defensive perspective. Nobody wants to hit that
guy asking question, JB. It's December.

Speaker 1 (21:32):
Are you start him? Are you giving them more carries?

Speaker 3 (21:34):
I'm I'm going to continue to be fifty to fifty
because again, you have to I don't think Karen Loss
is starting job. I think Blake Korm has done an
awesome job with his opportunities, and I think that with
this fifty to fifty split, it's important to keep that
going because that's going to run you through the playoffs, right,
And so when you're sitting here in this situation, you
still you still ask Blake Korman And I told Jamie

(21:55):
this before the show, like if that forty yard runs
not there, it's the same guy. That's the difference. That
forty yard run made that big of a difference. They
have the same numbers, similar numbers. They both scored a touchdown,
Like you're good, right that forty yard numbers just it's like,
oh right, he broke in. It was wide open. But
that was late in the game. I think I felt like,
you know, Cardinals were gone. They kind of was like
all right, where we had enough, right, Like let's go,

(22:18):
let's go home. But what I will say is the
play action, pass, the running game all looks the same.

Speaker 2 (22:24):
The drop back, it all looks the same. So you
don't have a beat on what's going on.

Speaker 1 (22:28):
I give Stafford so much credit for that. Yeah, the
way he's been willing to play this season. I think
we've talked about this with him before, Like he probably
prefers the shotgun or at least the pistol, but like
the under center rates and the amount of play action
that he's thriving on if you're gonna get man from
Detroit like you said, and they will and they're susceptible

(22:48):
to play action. This is a good matchup for the
Rams offense.

Speaker 3 (22:51):
But going to the running game, for whatever reason, defensive
defensive coaches think man stops the run. No, all have
to do is break one tackle the guy that's covered
me and I can go the distance.

Speaker 2 (23:02):
And that's where Blake Korm comes in. Right after Kiren's
warmed down, We're hits you with play action pass. We're
all over the field.

Speaker 3 (23:07):
We got you running, and then boof, we have just
a duo play that goes to the house because the
guy is out of his gap right and you have
that distance. And so when you can do all the
things that we've talked about from the screen game that
we've seen come back in to play with the tight ends,
the tight ends catching the ball, the receivers catching the ball,
the running backs on the checkdowns, the running game, the
play action pass, have one eye violation and man to

(23:28):
man and see what happens. Like it's over, it's a touchdown.
And so I just think everything is starting to come everything,
everything that we thought a couple of years ago when
you drafted Kyra in when you were going in this route.
All the thirteen personnel coming this year, it's all for
games like this one. Oh yeah, because this game is
gonna be one of those, you know, double chin shraft
type of games.

Speaker 1 (23:48):
Adan Hutchinson's a guy you don't want to beat you
on Sunday. How do you take him out of the
game plan.

Speaker 2 (23:53):
Same way you take Byron Young and Jared Verse out.
You get the ball out fast, and you run the
ball and you stay out a third long. But I mean,
it's gonna happen. And I mean, they're they're gonna make
plays Azelonis around forever. Yever, he's smart too, so they're
gonna make plays on you. But I mean, and I
hope that conversation wasn't so tough with Matthew Stafford about
being under center. This will help you, This will protect you.

(24:14):
This will make it so you can open up and
go to shotgun and fillay the field, you know what
I mean, and not get hit so much.

Speaker 1 (24:20):
If you want to collect checks to forty boom, let's
get you there that hard.

Speaker 2 (24:26):
But man coverage versus the run. Uh, the reason defenses
do that, the reasons we did that when I was
playing was it just gets you closer to the blocker,
you know what I mean, You're not off he he
doesn't have a dead run, and then you have to
make up that space. You are right there in his face,
so when he engages you, you can lock up and
go make a play. So it's not an end all
cure all for the run game. It just helps you
a little bit. We used to love that in Jack. Absolutely, yeah,

(24:49):
come on, come on, come on, this is what we need.
The problem is is you think it's run and it's not. Yeah,
and that's what the problem.

Speaker 1 (24:55):
And then in the passing game, DeVante is killing man
end zone. Yes, but to always have a quick answer
to Man because he can win from any position.

Speaker 3 (25:02):
Well that that goes back to last year and and Detroit, right,
who is that no one could win off of Man
that quickly? Right? And so the release of Devonte Adams
makes it like, oh, oh, you want to play this
man game. Everybody on the right, Davante on the left.
You rolled whatever roud you want to run.

Speaker 1 (25:15):
He will also mentioned a name earlier that I want
to circle back to, which is Terrence Ferguson, and I
think probably his subtle improvement in competing without the ball
in his hands is why he continues to get more opportunities.
But when I think about playing a press man opponent
man across the board, he's the weapon that he might
need to make a big third down catcher. Two on Sunday,
Terrence Ferguson, we who's.

Speaker 2 (25:34):
Going to cover him?

Speaker 3 (25:36):
I mean they when they come out in thirteen personnel
and they're in an ace formation and Terrence Ferguson is
the wide receiver, who are you going to have cover him?
Both of those dbs for Detroit aren't the biggest guys, right.
I want to say Roberson is what five nine? And
I think rock you Sin is what six foot maybe?
And that's a that's a that's a six to six
tight end that you're gonna have cover. Like to me,

(25:56):
I'm okay with that, Like give me that.

Speaker 2 (25:59):
Film. Yeah, Yeah, that's what I mean. You're gonna catch
them slipping every now and then. Just be accurate.

Speaker 1 (26:03):
Anything else on the offensive side against the lines deep.

Speaker 3 (26:06):
We have to talk about their version of Landman Jack Campbell.

Speaker 2 (26:12):
Oh yeah, my god, mister punch out, miss mister punch out.
When he punched the tight end from from Dallas. I
thought that was as salt. His knee was down. He
didn't have to hit him like that. Ball popped right out.

Speaker 3 (26:24):
So you got to make sure you have ball security
in this situation too, because they have a guy that
does the same thing that your guy can do.

Speaker 1 (26:29):
It sounds like you guys are both talking around the
point that the defenses don't need to pitch a shutout
in this game. Who can win an extra possession for
their quarterback and their offense might come out of here victorious.

Speaker 2 (26:38):
Absolutely. I think, like I said, if you the closer
you get to Jared and the more you speed him
up and the tighter you get coverage, wise you may
run into one and in the run game, just keep
trying to swipe at it. You never know when the
ball's coming out. And shout out to Kiren. And I
didn't say I didn't want to, you know, say Stark Korum,
I just like the competition. Shout out to Kiren with
ball security around the goal line. We see that he

(27:00):
almost They grabbed the football on him and he held
it so tight they whipped him around. Yeah yeah you
saw that right, Yeah, ultra important. So I mean running
the ball's great ball security. More important, they've done a
great job, all right.

Speaker 1 (27:13):
I got to circle back and apologize to MJD. Last
week on this show, I said, I don't know if
you really want the Packers to beat the Bears, and
I still think that argument holds. We'll see how it
finishes down the stretch. But your contention was just get
the Rams in control of their playoff faight right, which
is what they have now. And then this week when
headlines circulate that a grandfather is going to be playing
quarterback against the Seahawks and the Rams the next couple

(27:36):
of weeks, it said, Okay, I could see why MJD
just wanted control, because who knows what can happen with
the Colts, and you know, the Seahawks, and this league
is within San Francisco going to Indy next.

Speaker 2 (27:48):
This league is weird.

Speaker 3 (27:48):
I just I don't think I've ever seen a season
like this season, but I've seen others where it's like, oh, yeah,
this team is really good and then like Peyton Manning's
neck like falls apart, and then all of a sudden,
the Colts is like you may want these things. As
that happened, it's always best to have to control your
own destiny, though, Like I would hate to be the
Cowboys right now. I would hate to be the Cowboys.
The Cowboys need all this help for them to go,

(28:09):
and then the Colts get hurt.

Speaker 2 (28:10):
It's like the football guys don't love you as much.

Speaker 1 (28:15):
Does Philip Rivers have any chance at forty five?

Speaker 2 (28:18):
Come on, old Sam, you got it? Yes, sir, who
knows more football than Philip Rivers? Right now? Come on
off the couch, Marco and beat Seattle? Yes, come on, Philip,
I got you.

Speaker 3 (28:27):
Joe Flack right with you thirty nine and he was
off the He was on the couch for like six months.
My dog has been on the couch for five years.
He was about to go into the Hall of Fame?
Are you kidding? Like I told you, I believe, deep
down inside I can go out there and give you
a hundred easy.

Speaker 2 (28:42):
I believe. It doesn't mean my body can do.

Speaker 1 (28:44):
It doesn't mean it's true.

Speaker 3 (28:45):
It doesn't mean it's true just because I believe. Because
there's the everyone's delusion on their own right, And I
know Philip Rivers is probably out there a practice throwing
the ball, doing all this trying to be all good or.

Speaker 2 (28:54):
Give me one more opportunity here is no you did it.
You did it. That was different, though that was different.
Those are a whole different reason. Yeah, I just wanted
to hit Mike Martz, but that's all different too.

Speaker 1 (29:05):
You know the value of being the one seed not
just the buy and the home rights throughout the playoff,
but when you look at the current picture, you would
be set up to face the winner of Tampa Bay
or Seattle, which if the Rams are the one seed,
maybe that becomes Tampa Bay or San Francisco or Carolina
or San Francisco. Like, that's a pretty good pathway. That's
what We've already played Tampa Bay here at SOFI Stadium.

(29:27):
We know what that looks like. Rams have already beaten
Seattle here at Sofi Stadium. They know what Sam Darnold
against this crowd looks like. I think those are prizes
worth fighting for. And not that anyone's disagreeing with that,
But this Sunday can clinch a playoff spot next Thursday,
can put you in the driver's seat for all your
big goals.

Speaker 2 (29:45):
Don't shy away from it. This is what you want, right,
this is what you build for. Absolutely, there's no shame
in talking about it, it's not I mean, cats out
of the bag. Now you know what's happening, and we
both all we all feel the same way about this.
If we're driving cross country, I want to make sure
I'm driving because I know what we're gonna get there,
that type of stuff. I trust me, I trust me,
and I would I hope this RAMS group trusts themselves

(30:08):
enough to put themselves in position to be great. If
you go back and look at just the last two weeks, Carolina,
how would you describe that environment and that game, Yeah,
wet nuggie. Then you go to Arizona, where everything's perfect,
you get a completely different, nine, completely different result. You
you almost run Arizona out of their own building.

Speaker 1 (30:26):
So, oh, I see where you're going with this equation.

Speaker 2 (30:30):
Correct. If anything screams, if we want to get to
where we want to get to and everything every team
talks about that, then what you need to do is
keep it right here. And you got two weeks to
do it.

Speaker 3 (30:40):
Hey, welcome to my side. I've been I'm telling you
I'd rather be at home. I don't want to have
to sleep in no one's hotel. I don't want to
have to get on the flight and go. I want
to be right here and do what I my routine.
If I wake up every morning and I like to
brush my teeth and have a coffee in my uh
and look out of my balcony, that's what I want
to do. I don't want to go and do something
I'm not comfortable with. And that's why the one seed

(31:01):
is so important, because we get to do what we
want to do in our building. There's no weather, we
know the surface, we know everything. It's familiar. And then
you go and play then and then when we have
to go and do other stuff, we'll do it. But
if I have to go to like if you have
to go to Carolina to play, you just don't know it.
All of a sudden, Carolina is freezing and it's raining.

Speaker 2 (31:21):
It is It's like I control the thermostat in my
house exactly.

Speaker 1 (31:24):
SOFI Stadium is kind of on one right now too.
The win against Seattle, the home win against Tampa Bay.
See if they can bring it again this Sunday against
the Lions. The finale in Week eighteen against the Arizona Cardinals.

Speaker 2 (31:35):
You've given LA what they wanted. You've got yourself the
best team in the league that everybody loves you, they'll
be here. It'll be a lowed, it'll be rackets, and
it'll be fun to be the a side. Like in boxing,
I get to pick the size of the ring, the
referee and the gloves keep it here. Oh yeah, the
next two weeks absolutely, and I get to pick the weight.
I want to catch weight. I want to be it's
your weight, better fact, lose ten pounds.

Speaker 3 (31:55):
Yeah, I'll end with this, Like we said in Carolina,
learned a lot about yourself in Carolina, right, you learned
a lot about being too aggressive or not being where
you're supposed to be and all these things. Remember that feeling,
remember that flight home. That that's that's what's going to
carry you throughout all these next couple of games, is
remembering what that felt like, because that just half a

(32:17):
step being out of space or out of place versus
this team. That's gonna be a touchdown, right, and so
just make sure that you're where you were supposed to be.
I think the Rams will take care of business.

Speaker 1 (32:26):
Good luck on Saturday.

Speaker 3 (32:28):
Yeah, we got a big one. You're nervous. Come on, man,
you got to be nervous. If I could, if I
could be honest with everyone here. I don't even know
where my single is up there it is. We got deuce, baby, Duce,
I trust me?

Speaker 1 (32:39):
What you would you say?

Speaker 3 (32:43):
You trust you? Absolutely? Trust me, Duce. Take me home,
Take it home, babe. We'll see how it goes, but
it's gonna be a good one for sure.

Speaker 1 (32:50):
What's the what's the stakes this weekend?

Speaker 3 (32:54):
Uh, Santa Margarita State Championship. I don't I don't know
the spread. I don't know if there's a spread around.

Speaker 2 (33:00):
But uh, Carson Palmer's over there and they have a
lot of he commits on that on that team, which
is funny, like it's weird, like Carson Palmer's there and
everyone's going to see. I thought we were not supposed
to do that. But that's neither here nor there.

Speaker 1 (33:12):
For Maurice Jones Drew for tomorrow, go far, I'm JB. Long.
