Speaker 1 (00:04):
It's time for a Big Blue Kickoff line.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
Tell you that you couldn't. Giants dot Com, York Giant
Track and the Giants Mobile part of the Giants Podcast Network.
Speaker 1 (00:23):
Let's go, Hi, Everybody, Happy Friday. Welcome to the Big
Blue kick Off Live, presented by Cadillac, the official vehicle
of the New York Football Giants. I am John, luxury vehicle,
New York Giants, part of Me. I Am John Schmelke,
joined by Paul Detino. Hopefully it's a elimination day today.
We'll see how that works later on. Today. Have a
Madison Square garden, folks. I am tight as a drum.
(00:46):
I will warn you I'm a little on edge. So
if I get a little stippy today, apologize. I got
sick kids at home. I'm sweating Nicks game tonight. I
haven't slept much for the last three days. Needless to say,
I am tight as a Paul, on the other hand,
is relaxing anty ready for a big concert tonight, not
even thinking about the Nick game. He's ready to rock
(01:06):
and roll and oh wheready to go here?
Speaker 3 (01:08):
Paul, Now, were you No? I'm okay, John? Not by choice,
of course. It is what it is. The show. Tickets
were obtained before the schedule came out for the second
round of the playoffs, and so I'm going to be
keeping track of the score and probably trying to sneak
as many looks at the video as I can, and
(01:28):
with any luck, will be okay if you're listening to
the music, but you're watching the game. Okay, she listened
to the show last night.
Speaker 1 (01:37):
Oh no, I didn't get your trouble, did I.
Speaker 3 (01:40):
No. Actually, I was surprised this morning when she said, so,
how are you going to watch the game on the phone?
Speaker 1 (01:48):
Because I didn't say anything.
Speaker 3 (01:49):
You didn't I was careful, No, but and I said,
and I was happy that she wasn't angry. And I said, well,
I'm kind of gonna check the score on you know,
on game cast, and and then you know, depending upon
how the game's going, I may sneak a little bit
of trying to you know, pull it up on the
(02:09):
phone and it'll be between my knees. And she's like,
all right, well, you better be careful. You don't want
them to throw you out. And I was thinking to myself,
that's exactly what I want them to do.
Speaker 1 (02:19):
I know Paul's gonna put it bright and loud, and
it'll hold it up in the middle of the auditorium,
so beam subsecure usher comes over to So you're gonna
have to leave? Okay, sorry, Paul speed walking out of
the theater.
Speaker 3 (02:31):
Where's the nearest action? Can you please take me there?
Speaker 1 (02:34):
I know you should. In fact, if you really want
to be smart about this, yes, you could like start
like a brew haha before the show even starts. You
can accidentally like bump into somebody, knock their drink over,
get into a little bit of a tussle, you get
the like pregame ejection. You get to go home. You'll
be home by eight fifteen, Nick Celtics, let's go.
Speaker 3 (02:57):
Yeah, that would that would go over really well. Hey,
I will say this. I will say this. I do
have confidence in them tonight. And maybe the best thing
that I could do is actually not be home watching
the game, because my stomach will be a knots if
I was doing that. So maybe it's better that this
(03:17):
works out this way. I'm trying to convince myself that
it's the lesser of two evils.
Speaker 1 (03:21):
I just don't want to sit for two straight days
this weekend with Game seven on Monday, like feeling like
I am today. I don't want anything. All I want well, yes,
I know right now, see this, this is completely switched now.
It went from the Knicks having nothing to lose and
the Celtics being the prohibitive favorites and having everything to
(03:43):
lose since the Tatum injury, that's now completely flipped. The
Knick's going up three to one and Tanna being hurt.
Now all the pressure is on the Knicks, yes, to
to kind of do what they need to do. And
that's why I'm as tight as a drum. Anyway, We've
done a ton of schedule things here, folks. I don't
want to do a ton more that. We already have
two calls in the line. I kind of want to
do a lot of calls today and just take your calls.
(04:05):
But before we get there, you and Sidetech had a
fun conversation the other day about whether or not a
the NFL should institute a draft lottery. Yeah, we talked
about it, and I mean, look from purely an entertainment standpoint,
right and getting people to watch a TV show, you
(04:27):
could do like two hours on that. Like the NFL
stretches out everything, take it easily to give you two
hours prime time. You know you give to make a
part of the combine coverage, right, you get everybody tune
into the combine because you're doing the draft lottery while
the combine's going on, Like, you could do a million
different things to make this thing work, which could be
a lot of fun. So you know, to me, I
(04:50):
would be okay with it. My big focus is, and
we've talked about this sadly more than we've wanted to
over the past few years. The last thing you want
to ask fans to do is want their team to lose.
That's the last thing you want. You don't want teams
to be incentivized to lose football games. So if they
(05:11):
can develop a system, and look, it's not perfect. The
NBA has tried to flatten their lottery odds to de
incentivize losing, and it hasn't had the opposite effect, but
it certainly hasn't had the intended effect they wanted to.
Six NBA teams were tanking from like November this year.
It didn't work. So the NFL is different. Like we've
talked about here, it's not the NBA teams generally don't tank.
(05:34):
That's not the way the NFL works with the physicality
of the game, the guys going out there. It's just
not a game that's conducive to that sort of approach.
It doesn't happen, it doesn't work. But you want to
incentivize winning games as much as you can, and if
you can, you know, do some type of lottery system
to flatten the odds, because the problem is that you
don't want to create categories either where a team is
incentivized to finish in the bottom six, or a team
(05:57):
is incentivized to finish in the bottom eight instead of
the bottom ten. It's hard, you know, it's a very
fine line to draw there to make the system work,
because you know, the NBA they tried to expand the
playoffs with the playing games and then flatten the odds.
But now teams are literally trying not to be in
the playing game so they get into the draft lottery.
So there's always unintended consequences of your actions that you
(06:20):
have to worry about. So I'm in favor of any
system that can deincentivize teams from losing games at the
end of the year, because that's the last it's just bad.
You don't want fans rooting for their teams to lose.
It's a bad look.
Speaker 3 (06:31):
It's horrible.
Speaker 1 (06:32):
It sucks from a fan standpoint. So that's why I
kind of land on it. I don't think it's a
huge problem in the NFL, but we've seen it as
a problem. We've gotten the calls on the show. So
if you can somehow make that less of a problem,
I'm all in favor of that.
Speaker 3 (06:47):
The bigger problem is the perception that teams should do it.
You get that collection of media or fans who want teams.
Speaker 1 (06:56):
To do the two I'm gonna be honest with you,
and that's horrible. Yes, but if I could wave a
magic look if the Giants draft went, great, But if
I could wave a magic wand then win one less
game in twenty twenty three and have the Giants gotten
Jaden Daniels, I would do that today, wouldn't you.
Speaker 3 (07:17):
I can't think that way, no, but.
Speaker 1 (07:19):
But that's my point. You don't want to have to
think that way. But that's the fact of life. That's
what it is.
Speaker 4 (07:27):
Like.
Speaker 1 (07:27):
If you go back and you know, have the Knicks winner,
I'll take the Giants out of it. If you want
to go back and you can tell me. All right,
the Nicks instead of winning seventeen games, they won sixteen games,
and they got Victor won Byana whatever. I know, they
weren't in that draft lottery, but just to give you
an example, right, of course you would do that that
fifteen years of Victor won Biana. Of course you would.
(07:47):
But you don't want to be in that situation. That's
the point. And the lottery system makes and look to
the NBA's credit their new lottery system, the team with
those worst records since they put the new lottery system,
it has not gotten theick before. I know it's worked
that way. So it'll with the NFL really not having
that much of a problem in that regard anyway, if
(08:09):
you add that in as a further DISINCENTIVEVI, you could
eliminate that thought at all. But even if there's still
a small chance you could get in the lottery, teams
might still do it anyway. So I just don't know
if there's a solution to the problem. To be honest
with you, my solution in the NBA is to have
a postseason tournament and those teams play for the first
pick in the draft.
Speaker 3 (08:26):
Oh wow, how about that?
Speaker 1 (08:28):
So, like you instead of having I would eliminate the
playing tournament completely. Instead of that, in the week leading
up to the playoffs, you have the draft lottery tournament
and you have teams compete the first pick in the draft.
I have a whole system worked out. It'll be great.
Speaker 3 (08:40):
That's cool.
Speaker 1 (08:40):
You can't do that in the NFL. No, you're not
paying eighteen nineteen games for teams to compete for the
first pick. That's not gonna happen. And again, different sport,
different games. But again that would kind of be my goal.
Speaker 3 (08:51):
See, the trouble with this is that you're talking about
the NBA and the NFL the only two sports where
the whole tanking concept even comes into play. It doesn't
come into playing baseball, and it does not come into
play in the NHL.
Speaker 1 (09:03):
You're drafting high school kids are not going to be
on a roight team for five years.
Speaker 3 (09:06):
Same thing with the NHL. You're drafting European kids and
teenage kids and so forth and so on. So in
those two sports, there's no issue whatsoever.
Speaker 1 (09:14):
And then a superstar in the NBA or a great
quarterback in the NFL can single handedly change around. Yeah,
it's not like that in baseball. I don't. I don't
watch hockey enough to know. But in baseball, one player
doesn't do that.
Speaker 3 (09:25):
No, no, So I mean it's it's a it's a
it's an evil consequence of the systems that were built
in many years ago to say, Okay, the teams that
have the worst record are going to get the best
draft picks. And this has been going on forever and
ever and ever.
Speaker 1 (09:42):
It's worse since, by the way, give that's how you
create palent right, you want to give the worst teams
the best pay.
Speaker 3 (09:47):
But here's the thing, I never thought about that whole concept.
To me, it didn't even reach the bubbling surface, if
you will, until the NBA. And it was really and
I mentioned this the other day.
Speaker 1 (10:02):
It was Tim Duncan not ewing in eighty four no
till Yeah.
Speaker 3 (10:08):
Interesting, the Spurs. You know, Robinson had gotten hurt. We
got to call a caller who wanted to pawn off
the Robinson injury a little bit heavier than a lot
of other people did at that time. The Spurs were
not good, but they did tag.
Speaker 1 (10:22):
They absolutely tanked question.
Speaker 3 (10:24):
And that was the first time that I ever remember
when they went and they got Tim Duncan. And now
all of a sudden, they're pairing him with the Admiral.
Speaker 1 (10:34):
David Dramens could have came back that year and they
held him out.
Speaker 3 (10:37):
Understood correct, But what I'm saying is that was not
a good Spurs team. They knew it, and they had
the ability to make sure that they were going to
get Tim Duncan, and they did. That's where the whole
tanking thing first reached the surface. Up until then, I
don't ever remember hearing about any team in any sport
wanting to do poorly to enhance their draft pick. I
(10:59):
never remember hearing about that. And then when the Tim
Duncan thing happened, all of a sudden, now there was
a spotlight on the NBA and their draft because, uh oh,
let's see how many teams might do this, because look
how it worked out for the Spurs. And over the
course of time, there have been a lot of NBA
teams that have done it.
Speaker 1 (11:18):
It's almost irregular every year, and there's multiple teams that
exactly now, it hasn't worked a ton, and yet in
the NFL, I.
Speaker 3 (11:27):
Think it's only happened a few times. I won't go
into namon names or years or teams. I'm not going
to do that, but I could say it's it's been
relatively few times. A much smaller percentage of teams in
the NFL do it than they do in the NBA.
Speaker 1 (11:40):
I mean the Patriots City Drake Manathan last year.
Speaker 3 (11:43):
Like I said, I'm not going to go there.
Speaker 1 (11:45):
But they still won the game though, which is the
funny thing, because you never know what happens in the NFL.
Speaker 3 (11:49):
It's still not as prevalent in the NFL, not just
the points that's the point.
Speaker 1 (11:53):
Maybe one game at the end of the year. Maybe Yeah.
And again, teams don't generally do that. As players gonna
go out there, We're gonna play. You're not just gonna
sick guys, contracts not guaranteed. It's just much different. It's
a different sport. It doesn't happen. And we always say
that guys players are not gonna tank in the National
Football League. That's not how this works. So I don't
think again, I don't think it's a huge problem in
(12:14):
the NFL because I don't think it happens much, to
be honest with.
Speaker 3 (12:16):
You, But I don't think it does either.
Speaker 1 (12:17):
But you always do. And there's actually interesting and I'll
work this back to something I saw today Albert Breers story.
The NFL is going to vote the owners next week
on the various rule proposals. One of the proposals they're
gonna rode on is a change to the playoff seating format.
Speaker 3 (12:36):
Okay, where we've talked about that, it's.
Speaker 1 (12:38):
Just by record. If a team with a wildcard record
and a division record at the same record, the division
winner would get the tiebreaker advantage there, but it would
be just seated by record, straight up and down. You
would recede after the first round, so the best team
would automatically play the worst team. It wouldn't be bracketed
per se it would be reseeded. So that's gonna get
(13:01):
voted on next week. And I think the argument that
the schedule makers made is that, look, this will give
teams more incentive not to rest their starters at the
end of the year. And they went through a couple
examples last year the Texans, winners of the AFC South,
but they did not have a very good record. They
were locked into the four seed no matter what the
(13:22):
last year, last game of the year, but if they
if it was not seated by division winners, the wildcard
team or two or three could have had better records
than them. Okay, so they were playing. They could have
dropped as far down as seven if they would have
lost that game. But because there were division winner, they
had nothing to play for. But because you had if
(13:46):
you had the new system and a wildcard team could
jump a division winner, they would not have been able
to rest their players, or they might have had to
go to and visit the two seed in round one.
So I get that argument. I still like valuing winning
the division. I think that it's very important, but I
under I like that part of it. Would you give again,
you want to give teams incentives to play every game
(14:08):
every year because fans are buying tickets to games, they're
putting their hard earned money into it, and you want
them to have a good product when they go out
to the buildings.
Speaker 3 (14:14):
That is a legitimate way to think. I like what
you said about that, John, but I have always favored,
as you just said a moment ago, you're going to
play six games in your division based on the way
it's set up now with the divisions that we have
in the AFC and NFC, and when you have an
unbalanced schedule, you know you're only playing seventeen games and
(14:35):
you play six inside of your division. There there should
be a reward for that. And if you win your division,
you know, sometimes your division is going to be weak,
other times your division is going to be really.
Speaker 1 (14:45):
Strong, and the schedule does have to matter, and the
schedules within your division are similar. Right, there's only three
games different from the from the from the seventeen game schedules,
so it's fair to rank them. There's much more other
because they have similar records, much more fair. You're comparing
yourself to team in a really bad division that maybe
playing a bad division in the AFC, all of a sudden,
their record is gonna better than yours just because of
(15:06):
the teams they play, not necessarily the quality of the team.
Speaker 3 (15:09):
So I see both sides of that one.
Speaker 1 (15:12):
I like the the argument that they're making for it,
I think is the right one.
Speaker 3 (15:17):
Well, it's a great idea. I'm not sure how you
get there though, to really make it totally equitable, because
you know, to lose the division value.
Speaker 1 (15:23):
I think that's the problem. Nothing you do can never
be completely able. Always there's always you know, give, give
and take, and you know positive and minuses to everything
you can't have everything. There's always you know, takeaways and giveaways,
and you know, you get to make sacrifices. Nothing's perfect.
All right, let's get to the calls. Two on one
nine three nine four five one three two on one
nine three, nine four five one three were to have
(15:44):
full lines. We'll keep taking your calls the rest of
the show today, Folks. A lot of new names too,
which I'm excited about. Let's go to Jake in Ohio
State Country out in Columbus. Jake, what's going on?
Speaker 5 (15:53):
Hey, how's it going? Follows?
Speaker 1 (15:54):
Thanks for the call, No, thanks for calling it, Jake.
What do you got?
Speaker 4 (15:58):
So?
Speaker 6 (15:59):
Two things around Jackson Dart the first one. You know,
I've been following the NFL for close to twenty years now.
I know that's nothing in your ballpark ball.
Speaker 4 (16:10):
But I'm nonetheless it's okay.
Speaker 6 (16:13):
I have never heard of the SPS predictor thing.
Speaker 4 (16:18):
That has come out.
Speaker 6 (16:19):
Oh yeah, should people put any stock into that?
Speaker 1 (16:23):
Well, I'm gonna have to ask you guys what that is.
Speaker 3 (16:25):
All right. It's a it's a mathematical formula. It's one
of the analytics people.
Speaker 1 (16:29):
Okay, who have come up with what service is this?
Where does it come from.
Speaker 3 (16:33):
S SPS is what I I don't.
Speaker 1 (16:36):
SPS is the name of the service, okay.
Speaker 3 (16:38):
Yes, And what it is is they basically take a
player's college stats, his passing, his passing numbers.
Speaker 1 (16:47):
His Star predictor score test. That's it. Okay, that's it.
Speaker 3 (16:51):
And they will interpret the guy's college numbers and say, okay,
if he falls within a certain range based on his
yardage and his completion percentage and his quarterback rating and
his passer rating and his touchdown and interception ratio and
(17:11):
all this stuff, they combine all that stuff and they
come up with a number, and then the number and
call her please chime in here if I don't have
it correctly, because I didn't spend a lot of time
on this, I did see it. And the number can
fit into one of three different ranges. One range is okay,
this guy has a chance. It doesn't necessarily tell you
(17:33):
he's going to be a great quarterback. What it says
is that he has a chance to be if he
falls in the highest range. Then if he falls in
like the middle range, well he doesn't have a great
chance to be very good, you know, but he could still.
Speaker 7 (17:48):
And then has to do with like fantasy football.
Speaker 1 (17:51):
Ycause it seems to be designed to predict fantasy's success.
But a lot of times that also will because.
Speaker 3 (18:00):
Quarterback numbers usually mean the guy has done very well.
Speaker 1 (18:04):
Oh wow, and Jackson Dart is fourth all time on
that list. Yeah, I'm seeing yeah right here, Okay, Yeah,
so I honestly had This is the first I'm hearing
of this. I'm dissiness.
Speaker 3 (18:13):
I caught up to it about forty eight hours ago.
Speaker 1 (18:15):
While the fact that Paul's ahead of me on an
analytics thing makes because I.
Speaker 3 (18:21):
Know what to avoid. It's kind of like if you're
allergic to beast things, you need to know to stay
away from a hive, you know what I mean.
Speaker 6 (18:29):
Anyway, the only reason I ask is because you all
do five hundred interviews leading up to the draft, and
all these people that are in the know and know
what's worth what, and I didn't hear anything about it.
And now this thing comes out and everyone's saying, oh
my god, Jackson Dart's up there with Lamar Jackson, and
I just don't want people to get ahead of their skis. Yeah,
(18:50):
this thing isn't worth anything.
Speaker 3 (18:52):
Well, I think, Look, I will only say this if
I read the report correctly from these four that I saw.
Speaker 1 (19:01):
Unfortunately it is blocked on the giants that worked without
guessing there's some gambling something involved. It's fantasy football, so yeah,
I can't even go to the website.
Speaker 3 (19:10):
But just just to give them a little bit of
wiggle room here, they're not guaranteeing if a guy has
a great SPS score that he's going to be a
great player. What they're saying is that there is a
floor and a good chance because he's got all of
the requisite numbers to potentially be a great player. They're
(19:31):
not equating one to the other. They're simply saying, we
think he's got a floor to potentially be that way.
So they they're they're giving you a little bit of
wiggle room there. And quite frankly, you know when any
quote analytics service that says they're all based on facts
and numbers starts asking for wiggle room, that should kind
(19:52):
of make you shake your head again.
Speaker 1 (19:55):
Based on what I'm seeing here, Jake, is that it's
designed to predict fantasy football stuff. So this is is
I would I would be leary. They don't. They don't
put from what I can again, this is basically what
I'm reading. I can only read third party stuff because
I can't actually go to the website. But it seems
like they basically, you know, combining a bunch of different
metrics and they put it into some type of regression probably,
and they come out with a score based on what
(20:16):
a lot of those you know, composite numbers tell you.
Speaker 7 (20:19):
You didn't they have to combine, like the receivers you have,
and like the offensive.
Speaker 1 (20:23):
That that's the thing, Like, that's why it gets very
difficult here.
Speaker 3 (20:26):
Analytics are always always.
Speaker 1 (20:29):
You have to put them in the right context. That's
what you have to do.
Speaker 3 (20:31):
They're always in a bubble. They have blinders on. Analytics
are strictly black and white numbers, and some people will say, well,
isn't that great because black and white numbers can be proven. Hey, look,
well here's the problem. There's so much that you've got
to take into context in the NFL because it's a
spider web and every strand affects another, so you can't
really do that. It's it's exactly counterproductive to the rational
(20:55):
that makes the game work.
Speaker 6 (20:58):
Time to get a second question, Yeah, alad, you got it. Okay,
So John, you had talked to some people about after Halloween,
after Thanksgiving as far as getting Jackson Dart in the lineup. Obviously,
this is based on a potential negative scenario with us
not doing so well. I wanted to see what we
got in him seeing the schedule, you know, the first
(21:21):
half is certainly a gauntlet. The second half is certainly
a gauntlet. We have the hardest strength of schedule, so
that's going to happen. What are your thoughts now seeing
the schedule on when it would be better for him?
Kind of looking at after Halloween we have more road games,
which I think, honestly could be a benefit because the
Giant Sans can get the boobirds out pretty quick. But
(21:43):
after Thanksgiving we have the buy to get them ready,
and then four opponents who don't seem like they might
be as difficult as some of the opponents.
Speaker 3 (21:51):
Who three home games in the last four. Though, you
were just talking about benefit of maybe having him on
the road three of the last four games home.
Speaker 1 (22:00):
Yeah, I don't think. I think Giant fans would be
patient with Jackson Dart whenever he happens to get on
the field. I don't think that would be an issue
where they would boo him out of the box. To
be honest with they that'd be really stupid if they did.
Speaker 3 (22:10):
But I don't.
Speaker 1 (22:11):
I don't think they would. Look, you always want to
have a soft landing for the rookie quarterback in their
first game. You always do. It's something that coaches always do.
You want to get him off to a good start,
so you know what that looks like. It depends how
the season goes and what these other opponents are looking like.
I'd avoid teams like the Lions and the Packers that
that that's for sure, and like the Eagles or forty
(22:34):
nine ers, So those are a lot of really good
teams kind of in that mix there. So look, again
I'm very literally to even like put a date or
a prediction on this stuff, because nobody knows Russell Wilson
could be great. The coaches are going to determine whether
or not Jackson Dart is ready and when he's gonna
go out there, I mean at New England twelve to
one or after the bye. Those would be kind of
(22:54):
like logical landing points for me based on a softer
opponent and what the schedule looks like. But again, it
all depends on how Russell Wilson does, Jake. It all
depends on how Jackson Dart's doing behind the scenes. I
don't want to put on data on this. I'm not
going to, uh, because that's going to be a decision
made by people that have a lot more information than
we do, and trying to figure that out now is
(23:16):
basically impossible.
Speaker 6 (23:17):
Yeah, thank you, I appreciate it. I'm happy with what
the Johns are doing. I appreciate all the work that
you guys do, and have a good rest of your day.
Speaker 1 (23:26):
Hey, YouTube, Jake, great call. Appreciate it. Good stuff. I'm
gonna have to do some research on this SPS score
thing now. This is interesting, so.
Speaker 7 (23:33):
I wouldn't spend too much time.
Speaker 3 (23:35):
I wouldn't either.
Speaker 1 (23:35):
Is it worth it to do a huddle on it?
Speaker 7 (23:38):
Maybe? I don't know.
Speaker 1 (23:39):
You think people will be interested in that. I don't know.
Speaker 7 (23:41):
The old fantasy thing. I don't know if we would
should do that.
Speaker 1 (23:45):
That's a good question. I don't know about that either. Yeah,
good question. I'm'n have to ask people about that, all right,
I'll look into that. I'm off next week, folks. I
don't expect anything soon. Two one, and it's not happening today.
Two one night, worried I four.
Speaker 3 (23:58):
Or five, don't anything that I I'm just a.
Speaker 1 (24:01):
Level setting for everyone out there of what that's going
to look like. All right, let's go to Marcus at Arizona.
He's up next on Big we'll kickoff live. Hey Marcus,
hey's okay?
Speaker 4 (24:11):
How you doing a good? Just a couple of things, man.
About the draft, whether or not the players workout or not.
I think that Joe Shane had a master class of
a draft fading back into the first round without giving
up anything really but a third and a free third.
(24:32):
Whether or not they work out, that was the right move.
As far as the schedule, I don't. I mean the
schedule was hard. Doesn't matter win or where we play.
It's year four, man. They gotta be good, right like
we got to contend. This is the year of optimism. Man.
We have a good quarterback either way. You know, da
(24:53):
Boll does good jobs with them. He'll get the most
out of them. We should be competitive. I could see
us winning seven seven games, and I think that saves
their job. Looking at the schedule, I think I'm gonna
go to the Week two game in Dallas because I
think that'll be a good game for us to show
(25:15):
who we really are, and then my bachelor party will
be in Vegas the weekend of week seventeen. Nice, So
we better be competitive because I want to go to
a game that means something late in the season. Right,
good stuff. I like all the players we brought in
(25:37):
in the draft camp. Scatibos a beast man. It's gonna
be fun to watch strong work. You guys, keep up
the good work. And yeah, let's just not boo everybody
while they're on the field all year long this time.
You know, it's got to be hard to go to
work and have a thousand people booing you and telling
(25:58):
you suck every day go to work. So let's be better.
Speaker 3 (26:02):
Fans, Hold on, you said you're going to go to
the Dallas game in the Raiders game. Do you go
to home games too?
Speaker 1 (26:08):
Or no, he's already gone my fault, I said, thank you.
I was I was just curious.
Speaker 3 (26:12):
I was just curious as to the group of fans
who are in his section. What is there?
Speaker 1 (26:17):
Pierson? Hold on before you take that call. You know,
he mentioned how it must be bad going to work
that every time you come in and people tell you
that your stink. I want to curious what's that like
for you and whether or not that is hard for
you to come into work every day and deal with
that sort of stuff.
Speaker 7 (26:32):
Who's bullying me?
Speaker 1 (26:35):
I'll see he got the boot people cheer.
Speaker 3 (26:38):
Very impressive.
Speaker 1 (26:40):
All right, Let's go to uh Tim and Charles that
he's up next, and then Rocco you after that? Tim,
what's going on?
Speaker 5 (26:46):
Hey, John? Paul Well, I cheer for Pearson, just out
for his teams.
Speaker 1 (26:50):
Same here.
Speaker 3 (26:51):
I think that's a very well designed statement right there.
Speaker 1 (26:54):
Lance Meto. On the other hand, wait a minute.
Speaker 5 (27:00):
I already threw love out the lands, remember John.
Speaker 1 (27:02):
I know That's why I'm billying them.
Speaker 5 (27:04):
Okay, So anyway, so quick, three quick things. And also
I'm making plans to get to the game in New
Orleans with the friend of mine who lady friend of mine,
who used to play trombone and was the bandleader in
doctor John's band several years ago, so that she knows
the town. I've never been so anyway. So the first
(27:25):
thing is on the draft lottery. I don't think we
need it. I like it. I'm happy with the way
it is now. But if they do do it, I
would say one of two things one. I know you
don't like the brackets, but if they I don't think
I don't ever want to see if team would a
five hundred record ended up would have picked on the
top three. That's just not right. So either just there
are eighteen teams that don't make the playoffs, limited to
(27:47):
the bottom six teams, and you could figure out what
the tiebreaker is and the last one or the alternative
to that is if you do a full lottery, if
you did it with the rule that no team could
go down more than four picks, and that would keep
the team with the worst records from being higher than
five in the draft, and the team with the eighteenth,
(28:10):
you know, the the eighteenth you know, just missed the
playoffs can't go higher than fourteen. Yeah, the pro the
only problem you have with that's interesting way to balance.
Speaker 1 (28:20):
Yeah, the only problem you have with that is in teams.
Then you have teams that are going to try to
get into that bottom six or whatever where you want
to draw the line. They're going to try to get
into that bottom six at the end of the year,
and then you have you might have more teams trying
to lose now than before because you'll have more teams
that have a chance at that top pick, when now
it might only be one, two or three, But if
(28:40):
you have six teams that go on the lottery for it,
you might have ten teams trying to finish in the
bottom six at the end of the year. This is
why it gets very, very tricky.
Speaker 3 (28:50):
Yeah, it does.
Speaker 5 (28:51):
Well, what about my second thought of limiting it to
limiting to not dropping or advancing more than four picks
set that's.
Speaker 1 (28:58):
Not bad, but again, I think team will still try
to get into that range. Like so, if you can't
move up or down more than four picks, everyone's going
to try to get into the bottom five because at
the top overall pass.
Speaker 5 (29:08):
Because you have to you have to be plotting that
over like multiple games, and that that really I don't
think the NFL works like that.
Speaker 1 (29:15):
I don't think so either. I don't think so either, Tien.
But again, you're creating an incentive for something, and you know, yeah, honestly,
I think that might be the best idea.
Speaker 5 (29:27):
I think they should just lead the damn playoff brackets alone.
Everybody loves the playoffs the way they are. Like you said,
you win your division, strike the division schedules and like
this year, we have the toughest schedule. Next year we
play the NFC and AFC South. You know, it's it's like, yeah,
division winners should should have home field first game, or
maybe not home field, but you know they should they
(29:49):
should be seated as such. And the last thing is
a question for you guys. I know it's still up
in the air and we don't know what's going to happen,
whether Brian Daviles going to call the place where he's
going to let call the play. But I wonder if
you think that this goes into Brian Dables's decision. And
he's now got a young quarterback to develop from day one,
and obviously it seems they're they're really tightly intertwined. Do
(30:13):
you think that that factors into like he might say,
let me let cop can call the plays so that
I can spend as much time while the games are
in session, even you know, working with Jackson Dark getting
him prep and then you know, assuming Jackson is the
starter next year, he can always go back to calling
new plays again with Jackson start as his quarterback. Do
(30:36):
you think that's something that Tim Good figure into his thinking.
Speaker 3 (30:38):
I'm going to go a step further not only do
I believe, like this past week at the rookie camp,
you know, when Kafka had the walkie talkie he was
calling the plays in the seven on sevens. I don't
think there's any doubt that was one hundred percent on
Dabe's mind that during this particular practice session or a
couple of days that it turned out to be he
(30:59):
wanted to spend every minute that he could with Dart,
so it was better to give Kafka the play calling.
I absolutely totally believe that that was the case, one
hundred percent. But I think it's interesting Dable himself, when
he was asked about breaking up snaps during training camp
and the preseason. John you may remember this, he went
(31:21):
out of his way to say, look, I also have
two veterans who were coming into this system new too.
Speaker 1 (31:26):
You's got to teach those guys, right.
Speaker 3 (31:28):
He's like Wilson and Winston. These guys have been around
the league, but they're still learning my system. They're still
learning this offense. So those guys need some of his
attention as well. He can't just give it all to Dart.
And so I think if I'm Brian d Abel and
I'm not, but if I were, and I'm trying to
(31:51):
consider how all three of these guys need to get
coached up and need to get better acclimated to what
I'm doing, I would try to make as much time
as I could and alleviate as many bags as I
possibly could.
Speaker 1 (32:04):
I agree, But if he's calling plays, is he naturally
in more offensive meetings than he would be if he's
not calling place?
Speaker 3 (32:12):
I don't know that. It all depends on how he
gets his workflow schedule going.
Speaker 1 (32:16):
See. So that's why I think I agree with your argument.
I think Tim's argument is good too. I think both
of you guys makes a lot of sense. But does
Dabill think he's closer to the quarterbacks and works with
them closer if he's the one calling the place? I
don't know the answer. We can't answer, and we are
not going to get an answer to that.
Speaker 3 (32:33):
No, we will.
Speaker 5 (32:35):
Shout out one last With one last shout out, it's
everyone listening that Dan Orlovsky huddle. I mean I sent
that to several friends because you know people, see I don't.
I listened to all the huddles, but I know everyone doesn't,
and that, as I said to my friends, this is
a great analysis of dark strengths, weaknesses, weaknesses, and his
(32:59):
pitt potential development path during year one. So I encourage
anyone who's we've been excited about Jackson Dark and wants
to hear more about him to tune into that Giants.
Speaker 1 (33:11):
Yeah, I would say too. I don't know if you
watch him. Did you watch the Chase Daniel, Kurt one
or One's two tim? Yes, yes, I watched all, So
again I know I'm on with you. Tom. Appreciate the
call and for the fans out there like great quarterback
stuff from those guys. I purposely didn't get any of
those guys on. I tried to get Kurt on before
the draft, but he was on vacation in Europe for
(33:31):
two weeks. So once we got him, I ended up,
you know, grabbing as many of them I could once
the Giants picked their quarterback, and it was actually better
because I was able to just focus thirty minutes on
one guy.
Speaker 3 (33:42):
You knew they got it.
Speaker 1 (33:42):
If I got thirty minutes with Chase Daniel and I'd
have to do like four minutes on six different guys, right,
not the same. I got to do twenty to thirty
minutes with him, and Kurt, and Dan on one player,
So we really dug in deep on Jacksonville with all
three of those. You guys should go check him out.
Giants YouTube channel, Johnson the podcast, Giants dot Com, slash Podcast,
Giants app. Check them out.
Speaker 3 (34:02):
Great interviews, yep. I think one of the things that's
going to be very interesting here John, And it goes
to this whole quarterback thing. Do you have a guess
I haven't come up with one yet as to how
many reps, how many quarters, how many snaps each of
the quarterbacks will get during the three preseason games. I
(34:24):
haven't divvied it up yet.
Speaker 1 (34:26):
But all right, Well, one thing I know one thing
I thought about today. You can't you can't like you
are playing, not have anybody get nut. You're playing the
Patriots week three, you play them in November. No one's
playing that third preseason game. Throw that away. When you
play a team in the regular season, you rarely show
them anything in a preseason game.
Speaker 3 (34:47):
So toy DeVito plays against the Patriots.
Speaker 1 (34:49):
I think I think Donald play. You think I don't
think we'll see Wilson. I don't think we'll see Winston.
I agree with that that that is pretty simple and
big time players will not play in that Patriots game either.
Speaker 3 (35:03):
Yeah, probably not.
Speaker 1 (35:04):
That would be surprised. Just again, that's what we've always seen.
If you play the team in the regular season, you
don't show them much in the preseason. That's just the
way it goes.
Speaker 3 (35:11):
I wouldn't mind seeing the first quarter, but again, I
would say if you could play them for first quarter.
Speaker 1 (35:18):
And just I would think Vanilla, you're getting at least
one I think second preseason game. You'll get a full
half from Russell Wilson, and they'll play a quarter in
preseason game number one, maybe into the third quarter in
preseason game number two, And in your mind, Dart owns
games in three to one quarter. In Game one, Dart
(35:42):
and Tommy will split the second half. Game two, Winston
plays the end of the rest of the third quarter
and Dart will finish the game in the fourth, and
then Dart does the first half in Game three and
Tommy maybe we'll do the second half in Game three.
Speaker 3 (36:02):
I haven't given it enough thought. I'm really really curious though,
once we get to late July and training camp. Training
camp is supposed to open, by the way, somewhere in
that third week of July is we always we always
know that, you know, as we see practice and camp.
And by the way, here's the other thing, we don't know.
No one has said anything, at least that I've heard
(36:23):
about a potential dual practice.
Speaker 1 (36:26):
Not heard a thing.
Speaker 3 (36:27):
The Giants, by the way, they're playing Buffalo, the Jets
and the Patriots and the three press.
Speaker 1 (36:30):
Again, it's not gonna be the Patriots because you're playing
them the regular season, correct, And the Jets they've only
done one of those before. I'm trying to think the
previous two years. Pearson helped me out here, Paul helped
me out the major joint practices were those between were
those before the first preseason game or between preseason games
(36:53):
one and two?
Speaker 3 (36:54):
Let's see Cleveland when when we went to Cleveland, lend
let me.
Speaker 7 (37:02):
Bring up my that was before the open Detroit came
to us last year?
Speaker 1 (37:05):
Yeah? Was that before the first preseason game or before
the second preseason game? I think I have it on
my calendar. Let me look, yeah, um, let's see July.
No nothing in July. It so don't have to be Augustum.
So it was the Lions last year, Pearson that came here.
That was the first preseason game, all right, the year before.
(37:29):
If we go back to twenty twenty three, that was
let's see August twenty three. Oh, that's what I was
looking at. I'm sorry, I gotta go back to twenty two.
I got my years messed up here. Twenty two. Let's see.
(37:53):
Why are the giant stuff not on here?
Speaker 3 (37:55):
For that's silly?
Speaker 1 (37:57):
It doesn't have me away, so someone must I came
here in twenty two as well, because that's what I
was going on here.
Speaker 3 (38:03):
I don't remember a lot about the preseason games, even
though I look forward to them every summer once they're
done on the Jets.
Speaker 1 (38:09):
One, they never did a full one against the Jets.
Speaker 3 (38:12):
Okay, no, that was just one day Pearson twice we had.
Speaker 1 (38:18):
Yeah, so last year it was the first game that
they did the major joint practices before, and then the
year before, let me just look that up one more time.
That was twenty three. Also, I did that the right
before in my own head here twenty three.
Speaker 4 (38:33):
That was.
Speaker 1 (38:35):
When we went to the Lions. Correct, that was also
the first preseason game, So I might guess that it
would be against the Bills.
Speaker 3 (38:43):
I would think it would be Buffalo just because.
Speaker 1 (38:45):
And my guest too, because there's a lot of stuff
going on this summer with FIFA and such.
Speaker 3 (38:51):
It'll be there.
Speaker 1 (38:51):
It'll probably be there.
Speaker 3 (38:53):
That's my guess too. Now, if you folks looked at
the Giants wallpaper that the social media department put out
out with the schedule, and they listed the Bills game
as a TBA, they didn't even have a date for
that game. Yet they do have dates for the Jets
game and for the Patriots game. I was curious that
maybe the reason that that Bills game is not is
(39:15):
not locked in stone yet in terms of the kickoff.
I thought maybe that might have to do with the
fact that they are potentially discussing.
Speaker 1 (39:22):
Yeah, I don't have some practice. I don't have a
day on that either. That would be yeah, I think
that's a and we would probably do the one joint
practice with the Jets like we've done the last couple
of years. I could see that they have a new coach.
Maybe they want to do more. I don't know, but
that would be a decision Brian Dable and Aaron Glenn
would have to.
Speaker 3 (39:38):
Now, the last time the Giants and Jets did want
it was down there. But because of what's going on
here this summer with the World Cup Club Club Tournament
or whatever. I don't know that they would necessarily want
to have the joint practices here.
Speaker 1 (39:55):
Because of the crowd.
Speaker 3 (39:56):
We might have to do a lot of traveling this
So my guess is if there is going to be
any kind of joint practice, it would probably be Buffalo.
I kind of concur with that thought as a higher possibility.
Speaker 1 (40:07):
But again, and obviously Brian Dable has a really good
relationship with the Bills and Sean Shane, O'Shane and Brandon Bean,
so it makes a lot of sense.
Speaker 3 (40:15):
It does. It does, So I'm really curious as we
get closer to that point how those snaps are all
divvied up and then and then I'm willing to make
a determination.
Speaker 1 (40:26):
I had not thought about the quarterback staff specifically. I
just knew that they weren't going to play anyone against
the Patriots because that's who you have in the regular season. Yeah,
I get I think what I'm mat that, I think
makes sense. I'll think about it some more as we
a closer, but I think that makes a bit of
sense in terms of how you want to map that out.
That way, you'll get Dart pretty much at least a
full game. You'll get Wilson three plus quarters, you'll get
(40:46):
Winston a little bit more than a half, and you'll
get Tommy almost a full game. So I think that's
not a bad way to do it. Two one nine
three nine four five one three Rocco on Long Island, Rocco,
what's up?
Speaker 5 (41:00):
What's going on?
Speaker 1 (41:00):
Guys? What's up?
Speaker 4 (41:01):
John?
Speaker 1 (41:01):
Good cold?
Speaker 8 (41:03):
Basically having spoken to you since the drift, Okay, and
I just wanted to I told you John Dart was
going to be a first round pick.
Speaker 1 (41:11):
I liked him.
Speaker 4 (41:12):
I'm happy the Giants got him.
Speaker 1 (41:14):
Hey, look, we said going in that it was a
coin flip who the second quarterback would be, whether it
would be Dart or Sanders, with Tyler Shuck having kind
of that outside shot at it, and it turned out
to be Dart.
Speaker 4 (41:26):
Yeah, listen, I like him. I'm happy the Giants got him.
Speaker 5 (41:29):
I thought the deal was good to move up.
Speaker 8 (41:31):
I know you were big unshook, but I think I
think at the end of the day, I think, at
the end of the day, at the end of the season,
whenever this kid gets his time in, I think the.
Speaker 5 (41:39):
Fans will be happy.
Speaker 8 (41:40):
I liked him in college, and I think he has
the tools to play it.
Speaker 1 (41:44):
No, look, I think Dart is actually, by the way, Rockall,
I think Dart's actually the safer player than Shook, just
because all the injury stuff in the age issues, which
Shook that to me is kind of like really a
high risk move there just because of everything around him.
So look, I think Shock's really good. But Dart has
all the talent in the world. He could figure out
all the tough mental stuff and on the field processing
(42:04):
instinctual stuff that requires an NFL quarterback to be good.
He can do it.
Speaker 3 (42:08):
It's that whole traits against production thing. Yeah, you know,
Todd's got more production. Shuck has really great.
Speaker 4 (42:14):
Traits, without a doubt.
Speaker 8 (42:17):
I also, uh, you know, I've criticized the team with
somebody previous drafts, not last year as much.
Speaker 5 (42:23):
I thought. I thought this year they.
Speaker 8 (42:25):
Did a good job in picking the players available on
the board.
Speaker 5 (42:31):
There it was no brainers, it was there. It was
easy picks.
Speaker 8 (42:35):
You know, it wasn't who is this guy? Uh after
their names were called. You know, I felt it was
a solid draft. I thought I thought he actually had
a solid seventh round pick that I think the tight
end was great value there. I don't even think he's
someone that you just look at just traits or special
team help. I think he's someone you know, he can
(42:56):
fight for playing time.
Speaker 5 (42:57):
At that position.
Speaker 8 (42:57):
I think it's just it was actually the for a
seventh round pick, uh, and you know, the only pick.
I mean, I know fans are gonna go crazy by
me saying it, you know, the scatable pick Listen.
Speaker 9 (43:10):
I liked him.
Speaker 5 (43:11):
I think he's a.
Speaker 8 (43:12):
Great running back in college.
Speaker 5 (43:14):
I have to see it to believe it.
Speaker 6 (43:16):
In the NFL.
Speaker 8 (43:16):
In the NFL more, it's just a faster, stronger game there,
you know. But I was just surprised. I know there
was a lot of talk of taking the running back.
I think the only one that I heard talking about
taking a receiver was you, John. I mean, everyone spoke
about a running back. But I thought the room was solid.
(43:37):
But I'm happy they took Statiboot. But when they weren't picking,
I was kind of like Oil's was right there, and
I thought that would have been a nice pick and
a nice fit to have him and neighbors and a
guy like Slayton on the outside and him and neighbors,
you know, interchanging from inside out. I think it would
(43:58):
have been a good look. I don't either way. I'm
happy with Skataboo, but uh, you know, play some you know,
real live games in the NFL and see how it
works out before I'm you know, it's gonna jump for
joy like some fans are.
Speaker 4 (44:13):
So that sick.
Speaker 1 (44:14):
Guys.
Speaker 4 (44:14):
I just want to say thanks for the.
Speaker 8 (44:15):
Draft reviews and all that.
Speaker 6 (44:17):
It's been great. I appreciate it.
Speaker 1 (44:19):
Thanks, Rock, appreciate the call. Good stuff. Roco looks scattter.
We're gonna be able to break tackles in the NFL
the way he did in college. Probably not at the
same rate. Better athletes, bigger players, different game, but he's
gonna be able to do some of it. And he
just runs, oh yeah to a tough style. I think
him Versusjalen Royals is actually an interesting conversation. I did
have Scatable. I think I had Royals as a late second,
(44:42):
early third, and i'd Scatable a little bit ahead of
him on my big board. But wide receivers a more
valuable position than running backs that can move things around
a little bit. I don't think the Scataboo pick was
a need pick. I think that was a. We love
the player, we think he can really help the offense.
And again I will maintain this Roco that if Giants
did not trade that ninety ninth pick to move up,
(45:03):
I would not have been surprised if that pick the
end up being a wide receiver.
Speaker 3 (45:06):
I think the one thing that a lot of people
are getting lost in when they think about Scataboo, he's
not just a bulldozer.
Speaker 1 (45:15):
No people missing short ass.
Speaker 3 (45:17):
Yeah, he has other skills. He can slash, he can cut,
he can avoid tackles with much more agility than people
are giving him credit for. And John we saw this
in the MIDI camp too. He catches the ball very well,
soft hands, does a nice job out of the backfield.
So he's not just a thumper per se. He's got
(45:38):
other facets that can be used in a diverse offense.
So you know, to me, that's that's why he was
the prime thumper for me in this draft. And I
wanted a thumper, and that's that's the guy I got.
But he's a thumper plus is really what he is.
Speaker 1 (45:55):
Yeah, he can do a little bit of everything. He's
not just a short yardage guy, you know what I mean.
So I think that makes a lot of sense. All right,
let's go to Vinie and Florida. He's on next non
Big B'll kick off live Avan.
Speaker 4 (46:05):
Hey, how you doing, guys, We're good.
Speaker 1 (46:06):
We got Hey.
Speaker 9 (46:08):
Before I get into what I got, I want to say,
go New York, Go New York. Go tonight against the Celtics.
Our biggest game in uh I would say since we
won a championship, it's our biggest game because we actually
I'm knocking on wood and not going to say.
Speaker 8 (46:23):
It, but I love this team.
Speaker 1 (46:25):
Now, I would say biggest game win in all series
is probably since they went to the finals in ninety
nine when they beat the Pacers with the four point
playout and Houston at the shot against the Heat like
this game. Yeah, and look, remember if they lose this game,
they still have the shot at it, right, they still
have a Game seven. Remember they be They beat Miami
as an eight seed in the Game five in Miami
that year. No game since then has surpassed the importance
(46:49):
of that game yet, I can, given the history of
those two franchises together, so this is still second to
that one for me.
Speaker 9 (46:56):
Yeah, I think tonight's tonight. I got to work till
ten o'clock. So I've got my DVR on and watching it.
Speaker 1 (47:02):
Not not second, stay off the phone, Vin, stay off
the phone.
Speaker 9 (47:06):
Bro, I'm gonna decline every call that comes in.
Speaker 8 (47:10):
Could either way.
Speaker 1 (47:11):
So it was funny then you bring that up. So
this happened to me on Saturday. I had to coach
my daughter's like football game, and I assumed someone was
gonna yell something to me at the game and I
was gonna kind of found out the score. I actually
managed to get home without finding out to score. I
had take I had to take my smart watch off.
I had to take my phone off. I had to
face it down on the thing. I'm starting to watch
the game. A million texts are coming in. I'm like,
(47:33):
I don't know if they're happy text. I don't know
if they're mad text. I can't look at them. And
I got through the game, and obviously game three that
was not a very good result. Hopefully the result will
be better tonight, Reddy, Where do you live?
Speaker 5 (47:44):
I live in Saint Augustine, Florida.
Speaker 9 (47:46):
I'm from New York originally, but Saint Augustine, Florida and.
Speaker 3 (47:48):
Now okay, Saint Augustine, Florida. Uh if the Giants are
not the Giants. If the Knicks should win this game,
you might be about a mile and a half outside
side the range of my voice, as I seemed, Okay,
maybe you might be about a mile and a half outside.
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (48:08):
You might actually hear Paul screaming to get kicked out
of the concert so you can go home and watch
the game.
Speaker 9 (48:13):
Yeah, there you go.
Speaker 4 (48:14):
Hey.
Speaker 9 (48:14):
The four n I wanted to call was about your
discussion regarding tanking. Yes, and I just hate the idea
of rooting to lose.
Speaker 3 (48:22):
Yes, thank you, Vinnie, thank you.
Speaker 9 (48:25):
And and you know, I look at the Giants game
that they beat in the in the Cults last year. Ye,
and I think karma played. And I'm gonna say God
brought good to these Giants because of this instead of bad,
because if they lost that game, we would have cam
(48:46):
Ward and who knows who else. Because we lost that game.
We won that game. We've got Abdul Carter, Jackson Dard
and what we have Alexander. We might have picked a
different defensive tackle in the second rounds because you wouldn't
have traded or what have you. But having Abdul Carter
(49:09):
is the ultimate calmer. Because we didn't give up and
quit on a game.
Speaker 3 (49:14):
You know what, Vinnie, And let me just throw this
out at you, and you're certainly entitled to disagree. But
one of the other theories behind the whole tanking thing, right,
is that all we're going to get the number one pick,
and we're going to get the lock, stock and barrel,
superstar Hall of famer, who's going to change the franchise around. Well,
(49:35):
how many busts have been in the first round or
have been first overall picks in the NFL draft? You
know it's not a sure thing, So why would you tank?
Make yourself totally miserable as a fan, want your team
to lose, and then all it really does is give
you a chance at drafting a guy who's never played
(49:56):
an NFL snap and may turn out to be JaMarcus Russ.
Speaker 9 (50:01):
Yep, yep, that's true.
Speaker 3 (50:04):
I mean, so like, what did what? What did you
lose for? Why did you make yourself so miserable when
then you wound up putting yourself in purgatory by drafting
a number one overall bust.
Speaker 1 (50:14):
Or you could get paid me.
Speaker 5 (50:19):
A thing on.
Speaker 9 (50:20):
Facebook it's called Giants three six six, and that that
can't be run by anyone who has any interest in
the Giants because they're always rooting for tanking.
Speaker 4 (50:30):
The season's over.
Speaker 9 (50:31):
After two and three we go too, and four, the
season is over. I mean, you, guys, I think it's
more of an age generational thing. You know, I'm sixty.
We think differently than than today's mentality. And I truly
believe karma is going to be good for you if
you give it an honesty, try to win, and you
(50:53):
don't win, you're going to be rewarded, where if you
try to lose on purpose, not gonna happen.
Speaker 1 (50:59):
Thanks, Thanks, Vin. I wish that was true, But then
you saw the Dallas Mavericks won the NBA Draft lottery,
So I don't think it works that way. Well, just saying,
let me say this.
Speaker 3 (51:12):
Remember the year that New Orleans got Zion and the
Nicks wound up with a J. Barrett Well. Zion turned
out to be an injury plagued NBA player. Now, I
know he's done some good things and he's healthy.
Speaker 1 (51:24):
He's good though.
Speaker 3 (51:25):
Yeah, but how's that worked out for them?
Speaker 1 (51:28):
No, you're not wrong. All right, Here's here's an interesting
one for you, Paul. Let's say the Giants they get
the first overall pick. Let's play this out, Okay, okay,
and they took Ward tick Wart, Okay, and then they're
picking thirty third in round number two. I'm gonna list
the players that got picked in the second round. You
tell me to stop when you find the player you
think the Giants would have picked at thirty three. At
(51:49):
thirty three, right, you tell me stop. I'm gonna list
the players taken in the second round. You told me
to stop when I find the player the Giants would
have taken in your opinion. Okay, okay, you're ready. Yeah,
Carsion Swessinger, Jaden Higgins, Nick Emmin, Warie Quin, Shawn Jenkins,
Jonah SAVANAA Traveon Henderson, Luther Burden, Tyler Shook, TJ. Sanders.
Speaker 3 (52:18):
Sanders might have been.
Speaker 1 (52:20):
All right, I'm gonna go a couple more here, Alfred Collins. Yes,
in the second round, they might have Donovan Asaku.
Speaker 3 (52:31):
Oh, he would have been a consideration too.
Speaker 1 (52:33):
That's what I wanted to get to Azraku because I
think that's why I would have picked J. T. Toamalu Uh,
Terrence Ferguson, Will Johnson.
Speaker 3 (52:40):
It would have been a seven defensive player is who
it would have been?
Speaker 1 (52:44):
I would have been to me, it's a Araku, it's Sanders,
And I would not rule out just because there were
reports that he was here on a thirty visit Quinn
Shawn Jenkins. They did pick him back later, you know,
they you know, they wanted the running back. It was
a power back and it was a power back. So
I would not rule out Judkins there, but my board
(53:08):
as so, I guess the question is.
Speaker 3 (53:10):
Would you rather have my highest guy would have been
saying the question, would.
Speaker 1 (53:13):
You rather have Carter Dart or would you rather have
Ward as a Rocco? You don't have to answer that.
I'm just saying that's what the that's what the well,
that's what it would have looked like look like, Yeah,
which is interesting. It is so you get it. One
edge of the quarterback, which combination would you rather have?
Speaker 3 (53:34):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (53:34):
I wow, Carter's awesome, awesome, and you think the word's
going to be better than dark but you never know.
Speaker 3 (53:42):
And Carter will be more versatile than as Iraqa was.
Speaker 1 (53:45):
Yeah, I agree with that too, So it's a better player.
Speaker 3 (53:48):
So there's also you know, the positional flexibility there too
that you know that's that's a hell of a of
a scale to to try to weigh the the heaviest.
Speaker 1 (53:57):
Side, And of course you would have ninety nine in
the in scenario, you wouldn't have nine to nine in
the first scenary because of the trade. But yeah, just
I thought that was interesting little exercise.
Speaker 3 (54:07):
I'm definitely saying though it would have been a front
seven defensive player. There's no doubt in my mind. Yes, now,
I know, I know you threw junkins in there, but
I still think it would have been defense.
Speaker 1 (54:15):
Yes, I agree with you. I'm with you. All right,
let's go to Alex and Philly. He'll wrap us up
to the Alex.
Speaker 10 (54:21):
Hey, what's going on, guys?
Speaker 7 (54:22):
What's that?
Speaker 1 (54:22):
How are you good?
Speaker 5 (54:24):
Good?
Speaker 4 (54:24):
Good?
Speaker 10 (54:25):
I just wanted to just talk quick about the schedule
and things like that. I'm actually excited to start a
week one in Washington. I know everyone thinks like Jayden Daniels,
but you know, last year we were graham to no
hamstring away from winning that game, and especially we've had
some success in Washington. You know, last year was probably
(54:46):
the outlier. We've We've been doing good in watching even
when we.
Speaker 4 (54:49):
Weren't that good.
Speaker 10 (54:50):
We've been doing good in Washington, and I just feel like,
you know, getting getting the ball rolling somewhere like that,
a familiar foe that we have beat before, h could
jump start the season. And honestly, I don't know. The
schedule is what the schedule is. You know, it's if
you're gonna be a top team, you're gonna play the
top teams, right so you're gonna play them eventually, you
(55:11):
know what I mean. So as far as like the schedule,
I can see our defense keeping this in a lot
of games.
Speaker 4 (55:17):
I really do.
Speaker 10 (55:18):
On paper, we do have the talent and now we
just got to see if it messes together. You know,
Shane Bowen has to do his thing. But honestly, I'm
looking at the defense right now and doesn't have many holes,
doesn't have holes at all. Actually, you know, you could
argue maybe some depth pieces or maybe at the linebacker position,
but as far as a hole, that defense looks pretty
(55:40):
solid right now. As far as like the ingredients for
the defense, and I don't know, that gets me excited. Man,
It's what Giants football is about.
Speaker 4 (55:47):
You know.
Speaker 10 (55:47):
We can keep these games close, squeeze out a couple
of close games, you know, have it come our way.
And then I was doing a little research on like
toughest schedules, you know, teams that had them before. And
I seen even have the toughest schedule last year, the
third toughest. Russell Wilson and the Steelers had the third
toughest schedule ast right right, winning games right and tough division.
Speaker 4 (56:11):
We played them as well.
Speaker 10 (56:13):
You know, firth schedule thing is, it's I don't know,
it's you want you get to the Once you get
to the games, anything can happen, and all of a sudden,
your hardest schedule could turn into.
Speaker 5 (56:22):
The easiest schedule. So I don't know.
Speaker 9 (56:25):
I think I think.
Speaker 10 (56:26):
Regardless of how it ends up, I honestly think our
defense should be good enough to keep us in games.
Speaker 5 (56:33):
Now.
Speaker 3 (56:33):
I love your playing, by the way. I love your
plan by the way about being competitive and keeping games close. Now,
if the Giants only had Jalen Brunson.
Speaker 1 (56:41):
And Alex appreciate the call man, good stuff, Thank you.
Speaker 3 (56:44):
Pearson's over there shaking his head again.
Speaker 1 (56:46):
He can't help, so let me. I'm off next week
as long as he doesn't foul out twenty three throws
in a third quarter or something. By the way. I've
never seen that one before.
Speaker 3 (56:55):
Tell me about it now.
Speaker 1 (56:55):
The reps were not the reason they's lost that game.
All the open threes the Celtics at were. But I've
never seen twenty free throws at a quarter before. That
was that was pretty good.
Speaker 7 (57:02):
Yeah, I gotta stuff fouling, I guess, yeah.
Speaker 1 (57:04):
I suppose. Yeah, I'm sure that's all. That was just kidding.
So two things before I'm off next week. Yes, do
and you and Sidetack and Lance will hold it down
for us. Sure, good luck funding topics because there's no
ota is it. It's not a lot going on. No,
I've tasked Pearson week to help me creative with you guys,
So you guys can help figure that out.
Speaker 3 (57:23):
One more before well, next week is empty and then
the following week.
Speaker 1 (57:27):
That's when they come. Yeah, yes, yeah, so it's the
first t is the Dad at the memorial, right, so
it's two weeks away. Yes, I don't know. Less than that,
it's like we can have, Okay, we can have, we
can have. I think you'd be more excited for it
to come sooner. I'm trying to get here sooner for
I'd like it to beat tomorrow. I know, that's what
I'm saying. Anyway, two things I want to say. Number One,
he talked about the schedule. Let me put it this way,
(57:50):
and I've thought about this. We did our schedule review
show on FAM last night, which, by the way, you
can find on the Johns Total podcast feed later on today.
Sure it's up yet, it's only audio. You can check
that out. H I know fans are concerned about the schedule.
We've been very clear about how tough it is and
the opponents are very good. We've talked about that. Here's
the bottom line, folks. If you're gonna be a good team,
(58:12):
you gotta be good teams, yes, sir. So it's gonna
be a test. You'll find out exactly where this team is.
There's gonna be no hiding after the season where well,
you know, we want a bunch of games, but we're
not sure how good we are because you know, you
it was you know, didn't play very good teams. That's
that's not gonna be the case. You're gonna know exactly
where you are and what you are after facing this schedule.
(58:34):
That's a good thing. Okay. Now it's also gonna be important,
and we talked about this where while losses are disappointing,
and in the end, wins and losses are all that matters.
If you start the year poorly, but you lose those
you know, the games by a combined twelve points and
(58:58):
their field goal game teams that go down to the
very end. You catch some bad bounces, some bad luck,
but you're your in position to beat the Commanders, you're
in position to beat Dallas, you're in position to beat
the Chiefs, and you just happen to come up short
because you know, Patrick Mahomes made some crazy play, or
Jaye and Daniels has like some sixty yard touchdown run
or something like that, or Ceedee Lamb has some catch
(59:21):
like that. Stuff might happen. Just play well, Just play well.
If you play well, you're gonna figure out a way
to win some of these games, and you're gonna find
out a lot about this team. And I think that's
the most important thing. I'll say. Just go out there,
play well, try to beat these good teams, and let
the chips fall.
Speaker 7 (59:37):
What they may.
Speaker 3 (59:38):
You know, one of the things that I know we
always look forward to, John is when the Giants do
have those dual practices, like last year, we felt really
good about the practices against the Lions, and we thought
that that was gonna kind of give us a good
indication as to where things were gonna go. It didn't.
Didn't really happen that way. No, it did not, you know,
(59:59):
And that's why I hope that they do have them.
Speaker 1 (01:00:03):
Well again, I don't think we do. They just didn't
get to step up from the quarterback position they needed.
Speaker 3 (01:00:08):
No, no, But but I hope they do against Buffalo
because as much as I'm going to warn people to
kind of hold back a bit, I'm telling you now,
if they have practices with Buffalo and they go well,
I'll probably start getting a little excited.
Speaker 1 (01:00:23):
Okay, So off the COMMYE down there, Yes you will.
Second thing I want to say, and I've been I'm
still ruminating on this a little bit, so this is
a preliminary thought. I'll have more things to say once
I'm through with you know, watching OTA's and mini camp
and stuff like that. But you know, last year I
was very much in camp, spread them ounta and throat
all over the yard to figure out what you got
with Daniel Jones. It's not where I'm at this year.
Speaker 3 (01:00:45):
Good.
Speaker 1 (01:00:46):
This is more of a run the ball. Russell Wilson
likes running play action, throw it down the field. You're
not thinking of though, you're putting the ball down the
field to make big tas, even if you're passing volume
ridiculously high. I think you want to try to have
a very high average depth of target. But you have
(01:01:08):
two good running backs. Here's the word you have an
offensive line? The word you want to run the football?
Speaker 3 (01:01:14):
What balance? Have some balance on offense.
Speaker 1 (01:01:17):
Yeah, but I think with your quarterback that's what you're
looking for, right that's you don't want Russell Wilson drop
him back fifty times, he's gonna get sack. So that's
what you're looking for here. I think you want to
run a lot of play action. You want to run
the ball well to set that play action up. And
I think that's more maybe some more twelve personnel. That's
(01:01:38):
more what you want to look like this year with
the quarterback room that you have. And look if the
rookie quarterback gets on the field, When the rookie quarterback
gets on the field, you he didn't run a lot
of that under center play action in college. No, I
don't know. When he gets under do you, then you
have to shift to more of a shotgun RPO style
(01:01:59):
thing whenever that which, by the way, he ran a
lot of play action in college. It was just shotgun
RPO stuff. It wasn't under center r you play action stuff,
which is very, very different. So maybe that changes at
that point, but I still think you lean into running
the ball a lot and you play off of that.
And to the caller's point, your defense should be in
a position now with all your additions where you keep
them in the game. Last year, I wasn't nearly as
(01:02:21):
confident in your defense being able to do that, which
is one of the reasons I thought you had to
open it up a little bit.
Speaker 3 (01:02:26):
I know.
Speaker 1 (01:02:27):
So I think you can adjust your approach a little
bit this year, given what you're looking at with talent
on both sides of the ball.
Speaker 3 (01:02:35):
I love that you're enjoying my sauce in the Regano. Now,
this is really good.
Speaker 1 (01:02:40):
Well, I don't. I don't keep a uniform strategy no
matter that like you do. I actually I like to
adjust to my personality.
Speaker 4 (01:02:47):
I know.
Speaker 3 (01:02:48):
Hey, you know again, in all honesty, it's it's it's
just joking. Of course we're goofing off. But there's there's
no doubt you know that there are there are some
things as you try to climb off of the mat
to get to respectability. There are some core beliefs, in
some core foundations that give you a better chance to
(01:03:11):
make those first crawls if you will and defense, special
teams run the ball. Those are certainly things that will
help run. Yeah, those things will have a better chance
of getting you to respectability.
Speaker 1 (01:03:24):
Yeah, I'm with you one hundred all right, before we
say goodbye, Paul Knicks winner lose, they win, Pierson next
winner lose or Celtic. I should put this way, Celtics.
Speaker 7 (01:03:36):
Winner lose, Celtics lose.
Speaker 1 (01:03:39):
I think the Nicks are gonna win too.
Speaker 7 (01:03:41):
You know, all eight.
Speaker 1 (01:03:43):
People on ESPN's Get Up said the next are gonna
win today too.
Speaker 7 (01:03:48):
We all agree.
Speaker 1 (01:03:49):
Not good knowing. I joke knowing this next team, and
I do not want this to happen. They'll figure out
where to lose this game, and then they'll win Game
seven and bass because that's what they do. They just
this group needs to do things the most difficult way possible.
It's just the way they've been all year. They can't
make things easy on themselves. Although that's just sit back
(01:04:09):
and correct and get healthy and get rested and all
that stuff, so that would not shock me at all.
I want no part of a Boston game seven, and
I'm curious to see if those Boston role players and
non stars. I shouldn't say role players because Derek White
is a really good basketball player. Mm hmm. It's then
if they can keep shooting the way they did in
(01:04:30):
Game five, the last two games, it's going to be
very difficult. But the Knicks gotta figure out how they're
playing out without Tatum. The coach has to clean things up.
They need to get out of something out of the
guy that's supposed to be their second best player in
col Anthony Towns. You gotta get something out of the
guys supposed to be their third best player and Ogan
and Obi offensively mm hm. And you got to clean
up those open threes on defense. If you can do that,
Nick should win the basketball game. We'll see.
Speaker 3 (01:04:53):
I would gladly trade not seeing a second of this
game tonight because I'm stuck in a concert home for
the Knicks to put it away and win.
Speaker 1 (01:05:03):
And you can watch the replay when you get home.
If they went that's.
Speaker 3 (01:05:06):
Why I'd be very happy to give up the game
because I know I can go home after the concert
and find out that the Knicks won and then enjoy myself.
And by the way, I won't sleep.
Speaker 1 (01:05:18):
I will just be if they If they lose tonight,
I'm gonna be unpleasant days. Oh it's gonna be and
I have enough other stuff going on at home right now.
Or I do not need this piled on to what's
already going on.
Speaker 7 (01:05:30):
Will you sleep either way, Paul.
Speaker 1 (01:05:31):
Yeah, that's a good point.
Speaker 3 (01:05:33):
No, No, I won't. I'll either be very angry and
be up until five in the morning, or I'll be
very very happy and be up till four thirty in
the morning. One way or the other.
Speaker 7 (01:05:44):
What a life, and it is what it is.
Speaker 1 (01:05:46):
I will be there if anyone wants to say hello,
I'll be hanging out and around day. Should I give
the section? Then give the section right now?
Speaker 4 (01:05:52):
No?
Speaker 1 (01:05:53):
Better?
Speaker 3 (01:05:53):
You better?
Speaker 1 (01:05:53):
Not all right, I'll be up at at two hundred's
even with one of the baskets. You can work out
if you're there. But it should be fun. I can't
wait to go. No thanks to New Jersey Transit. By
the way, I gotta drive into the city now for
this today. Oh by the way, if you guys anybody
watching followed me on Twitter, you have a way to
get a three year old to take a mox oficillan,
please send me a tweet. I'm taking tips. It's not
(01:06:18):
been good human geyser. Would would would be the term
i'd use for how he's rejected the moxicillin. It has
not been pleasant. There's pink stuff everywhere, floor chairs, you
name it. He is, Oh, Grant has not been cooperative.
Oh willed the beast. I'm sorry, like the human equivalent,
(01:06:38):
you know, like in the zoo and the girls like
throwing their against the wall. It's pretty much that. That's
except it's peticillin or a box of cill it. It's
not you. No, he's smart. We tried to mix it
and yogurt, rejected. Tried to mix it in apple sauce.
He takes one taste, pushes it away, reject. Smart kid.
Speaker 3 (01:06:57):
Wow knows what he likes. He he won't take the
bluff I was.
Speaker 1 (01:07:01):
I was at my wits end yesterday. I lost it
