Speaker 2 (00:23):
Let's go on.
Speaker 4 (00:24):
Hello everybody, and welcome to another edition of Big Blue
Kickoff Live, presented by Cadillac, the official luxury vehicle the
New York Football Giants. John Smoke and Paul Datino live
from Schmoke's hotel room here in Tempe, Arizona.
Speaker 2 (00:39):
We're about three hours or so away.
Speaker 4 (00:41):
From getting on a plane and flying the San Francisco
for the Thursday night football game. Giants, of course heading
into the game at owen one Niners R two. N Oh,
mister Datino, it's been a couple of long, hot days.
Speaker 2 (00:55):
What did I say? I was a one and one
one and one. Giants are one and sup one. Now
I said Giants are one and one, Niners are two
and oh, I'm sorry, I thought you said the Giants
were on one.
Speaker 4 (01:04):
Oh, Giants are one and one because they played two games,
so well, one one equals to and the forty nine
ers are two and all He's like, Paul's doing like
like weird like air traffic controllers, goes out. I didn't
want to speak. I thought I would just a hand signal.
That's fine, okay, Yeah, I didn't know what your hand signal.
That's okay, all right, Paul. So it's been a couple
of long, hot days here. Obviously, these short weeks are tough,
(01:26):
and this is not the team you want to have
a short week against either.
Speaker 2 (01:29):
You know, a football guy I talked to yesterday said
to me, a football guy, what does that mean? A
football gag guy, a football.
Speaker 5 (01:36):
Game, A guy who was a longtime coach. Okay, they
and said to me, you know, maybe this is actually
better for the Giants because I questioned him and I said,
how do you spend it? Well, I said, don't you
think it would have been better to play San Francisco
first and then Arizona on the short week?
Speaker 2 (01:55):
And he said, no, I see it the opposite way.
Speaker 5 (01:59):
And his reasoning was this, and he said it was
a very strong reason because both teams do not have
much time to prepare for each other. And he said
San Francisco one of the things that they usually have
in terms of an edge on their opponent is all
of the complexities and all of the different things that
they will do with their offense. And he said, given
(02:21):
that the game is only a few days away, the
Niners are not going to be able to put all
that stuff into their game plan this week. So he said,
figure they're going to have a smaller percentage or a
smaller portion of what is usually a very wide ranging
game plan to use against the Giants. So he said,
if I'm with Martindale going up against Shanahan's offense, I'm
(02:44):
actually happier that he's got fewer days to prep for
our game than the other way around. And I said, well,
I didn't think of it that way, But if you
really want to sell that to me, you were in
the game a lot longer than I was, I'll buy it.
Speaker 2 (03:00):
And that's where I'm at.
Speaker 4 (03:00):
Yeah, I mean, I guess I understand that to a
certain extent. But I'll just say this too. Wing Warrendale's
defense is Winging warren Dale's defense, right, So they could
have easily put in a bunch of stuff in the
offseason to get ready for this game, to be ready
to go as well, So we'll see how it goes.
Either way, it's gonna be a very difficult game for
the Giants. Obviously, short week on the road, you know,
(03:20):
you look at history, road teams on Thursday night football
always at a disadvantage because you lose a whole day,
right because we're traveling today, so it's not a full
day of preparation, while the forty nine ers are at
their facility and they get a full day of meetings
and everything like that. While this is a transition day
for the Giants getting out there to San Francisco. It's
a short flight, it's only a couple hours, hour and
a half, but still, you know, between the bus rides,
(03:43):
the equipment and gettingunloaded and reloaded all that stuff, it
just takes up time of your day to get ready
for the game. So and the other problem is that
the Niners just really good. You look at their team.
The offense is excellent, their defense is even better. Probably
you know, Brock Purty is undefeated since he took over
as starting quarterbacks.
Speaker 2 (04:03):
Fourth longest streak to start a career.
Speaker 4 (04:07):
The forty nine Ers are twelve to zero in their
last twelve regular season games.
Speaker 2 (04:12):
Also, pretty good.
Speaker 4 (04:13):
They've scored thirty or more points in their last five
regular season games, and they forced two or more takeaways
in each of their last five regular season games. And
that's not counting their forty point demolition of Seattle I
think in the first round of the playoffs last year.
So needless to say, the Niners are very, very talented
(04:33):
and we're gonna have to figure that out.
Speaker 2 (04:36):
Purty doesn't make mistakes.
Speaker 5 (04:37):
John, to be honest with you, that's the thing about Perty,
he just does not make mistakes. He's patient, he's poised,
He's got a great sense of timing, getting rid of
the ball just before he gets hit in the pocket,
so he doesn't take an inordinate number of sacks. He
usually makes right decisions in terms of where the ball
(04:57):
is going when he throws it.
Speaker 2 (04:59):
And let's his skill position.
Speaker 5 (05:02):
Players know how to get opened, they know how to
work with him, and when the ball comes their way,
they will complete the play.
Speaker 4 (05:10):
I mean, that's that's really what it comes down. And
not just complete the play. They'll complete the catch and
then they'll have yards after catch.
Speaker 2 (05:17):
Next.
Speaker 4 (05:18):
Gensatz had a number where I think Deebo Samuel was
number one in yak yards over expected. Christian McCaffrey is
like fourth. This is like in the league.
Speaker 2 (05:28):
Since twenty twenty two.
Speaker 4 (05:30):
And the other thing about party, and I thought Bobby
Ocarake put it quite well. He kind of talked talked
about him like he was a piece and he called
him a point guard. Right, That's how they're kind of
referring to him this week. And he just distributes the ball.
That was another great next Gen stat where since the
start of twenty twenty two, sixty seven percent of Brock
(05:51):
Perdy's downfield passes have been to either open or wide
open receivers. It's the highest rate in the NFL by
more than ten percent of any other quarterback. And I
think the third place guy is almost twenty percent behind
that number. And that goes back to the Shanahan scheme, right,
not only the talent, but you have guys that you
can move into different spots. Deebo Samuel, though he's only
(06:13):
been in the backfield five times this year, which is
less than usual, he can line up in the back,
he can line up outside. McCaffrey does both, obviously, he's
in the slot outside backfield. Ustchik can be lined up
on the line outside as a full back, George Kitto
can be on the line and outside and then throwing
the fact that they use motion more than seventy percent
of their plays and shifts to move the defense around.
(06:35):
Shanahan is just so good at creating open areas to
manipulate defenders to give Purdy Frankly easy throws. He is
zero big.
Speaker 2 (06:45):
Time throws this year according to Pro Football Focus. Zero.
Speaker 4 (06:48):
Do you know why guys are open all over the
field because of the scheme and the talent of the individuals.
Speaker 5 (06:53):
I think it's important that people understand when you say that,
I believe the definition when they go through that next
gen stat of being wide open is three yards of separation.
Speaker 2 (07:03):
Open is three to five, wide open is five or more. Okay,
there you go, correct. So, folks, we're talking about like
a canyon around the guys that that is open.
Speaker 4 (07:13):
Did you know what the old cliche is like, if
you have the yard of separation in the NFL, you're open.
Speaker 2 (07:16):
Well, this is not what this calculation. Okay, he's not
throwing guys open either.
Speaker 5 (07:23):
They're already very when the ball comes in, They've already
got like this big bubble of space around them.
Speaker 4 (07:28):
You know, the ol Vince Lombardi run the Daylight rock
Perty's throwing the day Yes, okay.
Speaker 5 (07:32):
Yes, And that's what really makes their their offense so
difficult to deal with, in addition to the fact that
they do a good job up front of their one
on one blocks. And if you watch McCaffrey when he
runs the ball, I mean, we've already talked about the
passing game, talk about the running game. For McCaffrey, all
(07:53):
he's got to do is look at the alignment, know
that his guys are handling their one on one blocks correctly,
and then he just slithers through the hole of the
open lane. Because it's not often that defenders work off
of the Niners offensive lineman's blocks.
Speaker 2 (08:10):
They do a really good job of holding their line
and when you.
Speaker 5 (08:16):
Have that as a running back, your job is so
easy because you just go where the play's designed to go.
Speaker 2 (08:22):
You know, one thing Shannan has done over the last couple.
Speaker 4 (08:25):
Of years to deviate from their traditional system. He's actually
gone the more powering gap stuff in his run game.
This year, he's gone back to outside zone. Nearly half
of their runs have been outside zoned this year, the
averaging seven yards per carry on those runs, by the way,
so I believe they're running a lot of outside zone now.
And the other really good stat that Next Gen Stats
(08:46):
sent out. They do a big stat package for the
Thursday night game, so there's a lot of stuff in there.
I'm trying to find the number or here it is.
When the Niners are run out of eleven personnel this year,
they have eighteen carries for two hundred and six yards,
averaging eleven and a half yards per carry.
Speaker 2 (09:02):
It's crazy, It's ridiculous. And that's not a small sample side.
That's eighteen carries, you, that's a lot.
Speaker 5 (09:08):
When they get a hat on a hat, the defender
usually does not disengage to make the play.
Speaker 2 (09:13):
It's just that simple.
Speaker 4 (09:14):
Yes, all right, here's one thing I will throw out
there as a weakness on offense, because there aren't many
of them. But here's one that I'll throw out there too.
Their center and the right side of their offensive line
has struggled a little bit this year.
Speaker 2 (09:28):
All right.
Speaker 4 (09:28):
You have Trent Williams and Banks Aaron Banks on the
left side. Neither one of those players has allowed a
sack or quarterback hit. Banks has allowed some pressures, but
for the most part, left side of their offensive line
has been good. Right Jake Brindle, their center, has allowed
a quarterback hit and four pressures.
Speaker 2 (09:44):
Spencer Buford, their right.
Speaker 4 (09:45):
Guard, has allowed eight pressures in two games, which is
an astronomical number for a guard. And then their right tackle.
I remember they lost Kayleb McGarry in the offseason. He left,
so they have way killer McGary No, he was with
the Fouts.
Speaker 2 (10:01):
Mckiffitts. No, they' mkift's.
Speaker 4 (10:03):
I'm trying to think who their start at right tackle
was last year that they lost non important right tackle
Colet mckivitt's. He's given up three sacks, two quarterback hits,
and six pressures this year, so we know the Giants
are the only team in the.
Speaker 2 (10:14):
NFL without a takeaway or sack.
Speaker 4 (10:17):
I think if Wink can work some if you first
of all, you got to get himTo thurnal long first
of all. Okay, because and by the way, Niners number
one in the NFL this year, the average the was
seven yards per play on first down, So it's gonna
be hard to get them into those situations. But if
you can, I think you can attack the right side
of that offensive line and pass protection a little bit.
Speaker 2 (10:37):
And wreak some happy.
Speaker 5 (10:38):
The only problem with doing that, John is that that's
Proty's front side and he is so good at feeling
the heat and seeing the heat and getting rid of
the ball on time.
Speaker 2 (10:49):
Well, just in general, they get rid of the ball courts, they.
Speaker 5 (10:51):
Do, they do, And and like I just got done
last night, finished watching the entire Rams game and doing
the film breakdown on that, and I just you know,
one of the things I wrote down is that Purdy
has such a terrific sense of the pressure. He knows
just when that pocket's about to close and collapse on him.
(11:13):
He seems to have this little trigger that says, okay, boom,
that's when the balls got to come out. So if
they're not getting rid of it in quick game, he
still knows when to get it out. When he's back
dropping back into a full regular step drop and the
pocket's about to close, I'm marveling at him. And I
(11:33):
guess it's all those people last year when he was
a rookie and thrown into the lineup down the stretch,
and people were saying like, well, where did this guy
come from? How did people miss him? And the old
statement is, well, he didn't have the measurables, right, he
didn't have the canon arm, also.
Speaker 2 (11:49):
Have the great size.
Speaker 4 (11:51):
Last two years that Iowa State were not very good,
didn't have great numbers, right, all of that stuff.
Speaker 2 (11:57):
You look at him now, all of those wards don't
seem to show up. And he's also mobile. He can
make some players.
Speaker 4 (12:04):
He can make plays off schedule where he's you know,
that's the one thing Jimmy Groppolo could never do, right,
you got pressure on Jimmy. He kind of was not
the best when he dealt with pressure, and he couldn't
really scramble and create stuff. Perty can do that. So
it gives another kind of layer to that offense.
Speaker 5 (12:21):
The only guy that I could compare him to a
little bit. And I know I'm going back a little
remember the Cleveland Browns at Brian Sipe at quarterback.
Speaker 4 (12:28):
I do know Brian Sipe. I didn't really watch him.
He was he was a smaller guy in mid eighties.
Brian Sipe was a smaller.
Speaker 5 (12:35):
Guy, didn't have a cannon of an arm, but he
had that indability to get rid of the ball on time.
He could also move around, throw on the run, find
the receivers who were open. That's about the and in
some ways I'm sensing a lot of him in Purty,
but that's about the only guy that I could truly compare.
Speaker 4 (12:54):
Him to join us on Thursday, September twenty first at
BK Backyard in Brooklyn, New.
Speaker 2 (12:59):
York The bag K.
Speaker 4 (13:00):
Hey watch the Giants take on San Francisco for Thursday
Night football. Enjoy Modelo Drink specials, Meta Giants Legend and
Anthery Raffle to win game tickets and more. Visit Giants
dot com slash Bar network to learn more. Okay, that's
a Niners offense, Paul. Let's do the Niners defense here now. Okay,
also really good.
Speaker 2 (13:18):
It doesn't get any better, Joe. They're about they're about
six in pressure rate.
Speaker 4 (13:23):
They have four or f I'm sorry, five different defensive
linemen with at least six pressures on the year.
Speaker 2 (13:31):
Nick Bosa arrived.
Speaker 4 (13:33):
Three days before their first five days before their first
regular season game. He only played thirty something snaps in
week one, only had one quarterback hit. Well, then he
played sixty five snaps or so in week number two
and he no sacks, but he did have three quarterback
hits in that game and a lot of pressures. He
despite the fact again he showed up five days before
the season start. He is like a twenty eight percent
(13:55):
pressure rate, which is fit their sixth best of any
pass rusher in the league. So yeah, he's really good. Oh,
by the way, do you remember Javon Hargray from the Eagles.
They're really good defensive tackle. Well, they found money to
sign him in the offseason. He's really good. He joins
Eric Armstead, who by the way, also really good. And
then a guy both of us really liked in the
draft last year. Second year. This is two years ago,
(14:16):
so the twenty twenty two draft, Dray Jackson from USC
who has a lot of juice off the edge. He
had three sacks coming off the edge in Week one
and he's been very good off the edge. And then
then your guy Cleland Ferroll who didn't work out in
Las Vegas. He's had a nice little year. He is
four or five pressures. So again, it's waves of guys.
(14:38):
They do run stunts, they do not blitz a lot.
They want to try to get home with four And
I don't want to give Giant fans you know PTSD here,
but it's very similar to while the Cowboys run their
pass rush.
Speaker 2 (14:49):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (14:50):
The first thing that I noticed was that entire line gets.
Speaker 2 (14:54):
Off the ball very quick.
Speaker 4 (14:56):
Paul, I bought this staff for you, next gen stat
I'm happy you brought it up. Okay, both the defense
defensive tackles, Yeah, individually and as a group top five
get off.
Speaker 2 (15:04):
Rates and doesn't surprise me at all. So the tape
did not lie to it does not lie.
Speaker 5 (15:09):
I mean they are lightning off the line and that's
the first thing that jumps out at you immediately, like
a neon sign. The second thing that I saw, which
was very interesting, is that they are very much believing
in the horseshoe pressure package. They want their two ends
to get up field and meet at the back side
(15:30):
of the pocket. And what they can, what they're insisting
on is that their two defensive tackles get a push
so that your guy can't step up and gets crushed
at the back of the pocket. Now, what the Rams
did the other day, they had a number of instances
where they held the two defensive tackles at the line,
they couldn't get that front pressure. So Stafford was able
(15:53):
to step up a couple of times and then make
throws because the ends were meeting at the back of
the pocket, and Stafford wasn't there, he was in front
of him because there was that small hole where he
was able to step up. So I think that's a
huge key for the Giants is that they've got to
be able to make sure Daniel has the ability to
step into a throw or step up if necessary, because
(16:16):
those two ends are gonna do everything they can to
meet in the backfield.
Speaker 4 (16:21):
Yeah, and they have two very good tackles to compress
the width of the pocket as well, or rather the
depth of the pocket with Javon.
Speaker 2 (16:28):
Hargrave Eric Armistic. So they're good.
Speaker 4 (16:30):
So the Giants offensive line will be tested much more
than they were on Sunday, and it will be much
more like Week one against Dallas. And then they don't
have a ton of guys in the secondary. But Fred Warner,
we should bring him up, Paul. He is probably the
best inside linebacker in football. The guy's range is unbelievable.
He gets sidelined to sideline. His instincts in coverage, you know,
(16:52):
knowing where to be in zone, identifying target, stuff like that,
it's off the charts. And he's a good blitzer. So
he is a due, do everything middle linebacker. That every
team would like because he could cover tight ends, he
can play ZHN, he can blitz, he can pretty much
do everything you want.
Speaker 5 (17:08):
Yeah, there's there's absolutely no question three down backer. That's
why I don't know if you have a number on it, John, Again,
I don't study the numbers as much as I'm.
Speaker 2 (17:17):
Just watching the game. Yeah, I rarely saw them in dime.
Speaker 4 (17:21):
No, they they do, not know because they like to
have him and Dre Greenlaw they are two linebackers on
the field because frankly, they're just really really.
Speaker 5 (17:27):
They have such athleticism and range correct, so they don't
they don't go small with a lot of dime package.
Speaker 2 (17:33):
They don't.
Speaker 5 (17:33):
You know, they'll do some nickel obviously, but they're just
not gonna get caught a lot in din so, and
that's what makes it difficult, because you know, sometimes when
teams will overuse the dime because they're so worried about,
you know, your passing game or your ability to run
speed or quick game, then.
Speaker 2 (17:52):
You could bully them with the run.
Speaker 4 (17:53):
Not only nine point eight, I'm sorry, only zero point
three percent of their snaps second field was that low.
That's since the start of twenty twenty.
Speaker 5 (18:02):
Two holy well that again, that does not that number
does not surprise me.
Speaker 2 (18:06):
You're right on it today, poly dots.
Speaker 5 (18:08):
And but but it's scary, well, no, there's they're scary
good they are, they're scary.
Speaker 4 (18:14):
Yeah, and imagine one er, Drake Greenlaw is actually a
pretty dark good player.
Speaker 5 (18:17):
Yes, yes, So you've got these guys who they can
keep in in your obvious passing situation. But you can't
trip them up by trying to run the ball because
those two linebackers are gonna stick you. Yeah, and look,
they're gonna play a ton of zone. They have one
of the highest zone defense rates in the league. It's
a lot of Cover three and some Cover four snuck
in there too. They do play some Cover one. They'll
mix things up a little bit. They don't have you know,
(18:39):
the best, you know, top cornerbacks in the league.
Speaker 4 (18:43):
It's it's just not kind of where they've put a
lot of their resources. They more worry about. They have
a couple of good safeties and Tallanoa Hufanga, uh Taysehaun
Gibson is back there. And then at cornerback, Uh, I
believe it's Diamador Leonore.
Speaker 2 (18:58):
If I'm not mistaken, I have to double check that
one need too.
Speaker 4 (19:01):
And then you have Tarvarius Ward and Isaiah Oliver as well,
so those are their corners. Ambry Thomas is on the
injured list, we'll see if he plays. He's kind of
their fourth cornerback. But again, they play a lot of
cover three. They try to keep everyone kind of in
front of them a little bit. They don't want to
allow plays over the top. I think they've only allowed
three passes of twenty more yards this year, which is,
you know, top of the league, near the top of
(19:22):
the league. So that's maybe a spot where the Giants
can do some damage or the problem is that, you know,
unless you get just doing a bunch of quick early passes,
you're gonna have to protect long enough to try to
take advantage of some of that deep zone that they're
gonna play.
Speaker 2 (19:34):
I wrote down the following items.
Speaker 5 (19:36):
I said to me, I said, if you're gonna attack
this defense, Ward often gives way too much cushion. You
can get a lot of completions against Tavera.
Speaker 2 (19:44):
And again in front of him.
Speaker 4 (19:45):
That to me is the weak spot in terms of
their defensive secondary. Throw a lot at Ward as often
as possible, I wrote down, run off to the left
side of your offense if you can get wide all right,
because Bose is so interesting. He's a great player, but
he's so interested in getting upfield.
Speaker 2 (20:03):
If you can get.
Speaker 5 (20:04):
Wide around him to the sideline, you can run effectively
to your left side against the Niners defense. The other
thing I wrote down was throw outside the numbers all
the time. Do not throw into the middle of the
field against these guys, because those linebackers are going to
cause you trouble.
Speaker 2 (20:21):
That is not a good idea. So always try to
throw to the outside.
Speaker 4 (20:25):
With its short, quick perimeter throw is basically what you're
looking at. And then the other thing that I wrote
down was if did you watch the Rams. I guess
it was their first touchdown.
Speaker 5 (20:34):
They used the backside screen, okay, which was really sweet
because you know that the Niners are so good in
team defense and their pursuit is so good. The Rams
use the backside screen, which totally faked them out and
it turned out to be an easy touchdown. If I'm
the Giants, that play is going to be in my playbook,
(20:56):
and at some point in a key spot in the game,
I'm pulling it out. The Rams in the red zone
and they got a touchdown out of it. I would
like to see that play used by the Giants at
least a couple of times.
Speaker 2 (21:05):
And Niners don't blitz a ton.
Speaker 4 (21:06):
They will know they get home with their four and
not you know, put their secondary in the one.
Speaker 6 (21:11):
No.
Speaker 4 (21:11):
I wouldn't do it if I were them either. All right,
let's get to your calls, folks. Two on one nine
three nine four five one three, Uh, really quick. On
the injury report, we should mention that Dan Bryan dable
to speak yesterday, said they're gonna take sekuon Barkley probably
up until game time. It will be a game time decision.
I imagine it'll probably be similar with Andrew Thomas. We'll
keep an eye on that throughout the week as well.
The official injury report should be out today at some
(21:33):
point this afternoon, and o Jalari as well.
Speaker 5 (21:36):
And then Brettison with the protocol he said, very very
unlikely correct.
Speaker 4 (21:40):
And then we'll see what happens with Brandon Ayuk San Francisco. Yeah,
and we'll see what happens with Ambry Thomas out there too.
Brandon Yuk has been their top wide receiver this year.
Hike Strong to them, so something to keep an eye on.
Run our walk with Giants Legends. The Giants Foundations will

get on the phones. Two on one, nine, five, one three.
We have a full bank. Let's go to James and Georgia.
He'll lead us off today than Steve, then Vinnie, James,
what's going on?
Speaker 2 (22:22):
Hey, let's go Fellers at today.
Speaker 7 (22:25):
Good much much so. Last a couple of seasons ago,
I called about a lineup on like what would you
rather do? Scenario? Just putting your GM hat on, and
I think kind of now we're in the same scenario.
So my question I have a question that I one
more comment, sure if if you had to go with
(22:48):
the young lineup, because on Sunday I believe we probably
had like the youngest lineup offensive line in the league,
and they did a pretty good job. So would you
go with I think Glelenski might have, you know, answered
the question for us. But would you go with the
younger line now knowing that you're gonna not win as
(23:11):
many games as if you had a veteran in place
this year? But next year, you know you, with their development,
you're gonna guarantee yourself at least thirteen wins. Or would
you go with the veteran line now for this year,
now when you got a playoff team and then.
Speaker 4 (23:30):
James James James James j James James James. I'm gonna
stop you for a second. They're gonna play the line
that gives it the best chance to win. And I
don't know what planet you're guaranteeing yourself thirteen wins next
year if you play the young guys this year. I
would like to live on that planet, but I'm not
sure that planet exists. Look when Breton gets back, No,
James James James, No, I mean just because you play
young guys doesn't mean they're all gonna become really good players.
Speaker 2 (23:51):
Yeah, right, all right, you know what I'm saying. So
here's what I'm gonna say. They what go ahead.
Speaker 7 (23:57):
I'm not saying like I'm not saying like like Garret
garrantee and all that stuff, because that was your quote.
Speaker 2 (24:03):
That was your quote.
Speaker 4 (24:04):
It's guaranteeing thirteen wins up quoting you.
Speaker 7 (24:07):
Maybe maybe maybe I used maybe I'll miss used of
all word and guarantee. You know what I'm saying. But
I mean, like as far as when gms have to
make the prediction of well, we're going to cut somebody
doing with the prediction, with the projection predictions of a
younger guy, I'm not saying we're going to start the
(24:30):
best line now because they're obviously not choosing to do that.
If they put a lesser guy in that, they're going
that they're.
Speaker 3 (24:37):
You know, young.
Speaker 2 (24:38):
But and James, they didn't do that cut down the past,
you're not cutting it.
Speaker 4 (24:43):
They played Mark McKeith Marcus McKeithen last week because they
thought he would be better than Mark Lewinsky. That They
didn't do it for a future development project. They did
it because they thought he'd be better today.
Speaker 2 (24:53):
They needed to win the.
Speaker 7 (24:54):
Game, yes, right, right, right, right, So maybe this is
this was like the last time I asked the questions
like an off season more of an off season question. Yeah,
but I mean in this situation then, yes, I'm just
asking now that Lewinsky has kind of taken himself out
of the equation. And I do believe that gms do say, like, hey,
(25:16):
if we get these guys or and coaches, we get
this guy's the experience now, they will be better next year.
Speaker 5 (25:24):
Right, But you know, give us half a second. Here
the Giants are in the third week of the regular
season in twenty twenty three. Trust me when I tell
you these coaches are busting their butts all week here.
Whatever it is here we're doing. We were here three
days in Arizona. I can't even count.
Speaker 2 (25:43):
Yes.
Speaker 4 (25:44):
And also, Joe, she's not telling them to play here, no, no,
to try to figure out a way to beat the
forty nine ers. The furthest thing from their mind is
what's going to happen in twenty twenty four. Here, I
guarantee you of that. And second of all, Mark Len's
he played well last week. He actually played one of
his better games. Any concussion protocol he's playing again? Yeah,
oh no, he might. I mean, we'll see it. If
(26:04):
Thomas starts at left tackle, though you could see a
Zoo a left guard and McKeith and and right guard too,
you could.
Speaker 2 (26:10):
I don't just don't know about Thomas's availability. No, neither
do I.
Speaker 4 (26:13):
I'm not saying if if Thomas plays, I think they
would play a Zoo over Glewinski at guard, don't you probably?
I think so too. So that's something we'll keep an eye. James,
Now please go move on to your next point.
Speaker 7 (26:25):
Uh, it's all good if the air.
Speaker 2 (26:29):
Okay, But James, he didn't ask anything else. I know,
did you have one more thing? Yeah? I mean yeah,
he said, you another question of comment.
Speaker 4 (26:38):
Okay, Thank James, appreciate the call. Two O one nine
three nine four five one three. Let's go to Steven
New Jersey. He wants to talk about the old line
as well. Steve, what's going on?
Speaker 2 (26:49):
Steve? If you want to look at twenty four?
Speaker 5 (26:53):
No, I mean that's great, he's looking ahead, but uh,
there's there's a game to be played, Steve.
Speaker 2 (27:00):
What's Upboddy?
Speaker 6 (27:01):
How you doing? I was wondering how the Giants offensive
line is gonna stack Stacked up with the front seven
of the forty nine ers, it looks pretty bleak. What
type of plays can the Giants do to move the ball?
Speaker 4 (27:17):
Now, Steve, I'm gonna say this, and and just to
be fair, I don't care who your front is. You
go up against this forty nine Ers defensive front, your
outlooks going to be bleak. So this is not independent
to the Giants offensive line. Every every offensive line would
have their hands fill with with what the forty nine
ers do up front.
Speaker 2 (27:35):
Look, it's gonna be a rough go.
Speaker 4 (27:37):
I mean, they're gonna give up pressures, they're gonna give
up quarterbacks, they're gonna give up sacks. You just hope
that there they play well enough so that the line
confunction right.
Speaker 2 (27:47):
So so the offense confunction part.
Speaker 4 (27:49):
Of me just give Daniel Jones time, you know, don't
get him into that mode he was in by the
I don't know third drive of the game against Dallas.
The second his foot hit the ground on his three
or five step drop, he's thinking that he has to
run for his life. So I'm not asking for you know,
Daniel Jones to have a tea party back there, you know,
(28:11):
Pastor Croissan take a sip. But I am asking that
he's not like you know, speed three Daniel Jones. If
he stops moving in the pocket for less than three seconds,
he's gonna blow up. So that's kind of where I'm
hoping the offensive line can go just because of how
good the Niners front.
Speaker 5 (28:27):
Yes, I wasn't gonna go here this early in the program.
In fact, I was probably gonna save it for the
pregame show, different audience. I think, more than ever, Daniel
Jones has to play Superman for the Giants.
Speaker 2 (28:40):
To win this game.
Speaker 4 (28:41):
And I'll disagree with you, and what I'm talking about
is I think his es capability with you is going
to be the primary factor if the Giants pull off
this upset.
Speaker 2 (28:53):
Or even if they're really in a tight ball game.
Speaker 5 (28:56):
It's because Daniel Jones threw for three hundred yards and
ram for about eighty.
Speaker 4 (29:01):
Think about that first drive against Dallas, the way he
evaded the rush and ran for about thirty yards in
that first drive against Dallas.
Speaker 5 (29:08):
That's the kind of full game Daniel Jones is going
to have to have.
Speaker 2 (29:14):
And you remember what I said about Stafford.
Speaker 4 (29:16):
Especially by the way of Sakuon can't goby and without
that really tough run of the ball.
Speaker 5 (29:20):
Now you remember what I said about Stafford in the
Rams game last week, they.
Speaker 2 (29:23):
Gave him just enough room and a number.
Speaker 5 (29:26):
Of instances where he could take a step or two
and was able to get the ball out. Daniel was
going to have to be very instinctive as to know
when the heat's coming, how quickly it's come, a good
feel and have a great feel for when to get
that ball out and also went to move and went
to tuck it down and run. I'm telling you, if
(29:47):
the Giants are in this game, or if they pull
it off, it's gonna because Jones had a phenomenal night
and that's the only way I really believe the Giants
can steal this game.
Speaker 2 (29:57):
He's got to play huge. I mean you could. You
can always play the special team score, defensive score. You
can't game plan for that. I totally agree with you.
I'm with you.
Speaker 5 (30:09):
And by the way, I don't like Steve appreciate the
call and I don't like to do that. I don't
like to put a game on the quarterback shoulders and.
Speaker 2 (30:15):
Say he's got to play huge. I that's not a
good way to go into a game. But I really
think that's how you have to look at it.
Speaker 5 (30:24):
Well, yeah, and I and I said this, John, you
absolutely welcome to to to.
Speaker 2 (30:31):
Slap me backwards on this.
Speaker 5 (30:33):
I thought that Daniel Jones reminded me an awful lot
of John Elway in the second half against the Cardinals.
Speaker 2 (30:38):
I really believe that I saw a lot of John Elway.
I would say playstyle, yes, I think playstyle. Yes.
Speaker 5 (30:44):
He threw the deep ball, he hung in there when
he had to, he ran when he had to, and
ran forward for big yardage.
Speaker 4 (30:51):
When key spots. Just to be clear, you're not calling
him John. He played with that style.
Speaker 5 (30:58):
Yes, I saw a lot of that in what he
did against the Cardinals in the second half.
Speaker 2 (31:04):
He was also kind of good Josh Allen.
Speaker 4 (31:06):
Right, you know if you take the all the not
as RiskIE well, I said, good, Josh Allen, you take
the interceptions away, but you know, ran a lot, threw
the ball down the field and made a lot of
big plays.
Speaker 2 (31:17):
He's gonna need four quarters of that on Thursday. I
could not again.
Speaker 4 (31:20):
You need to play like you did for the second
half against Arizona for four quarters. A lot tougher against
that defense, mind you, because it's a much bigger challenge.
But yes, that's pretty much where we're at, all right,
Let's go to Vinny in Florida.
Speaker 2 (31:33):
He's up next to a van.
Speaker 3 (31:34):
Hey, how you doing.
Speaker 8 (31:35):
It's been a while, Johnny and Pauly Dotts, I think
a year.
Speaker 6 (31:40):
At worked.
Speaker 2 (31:41):
Good to hear your voice. Man, what's going on?
Speaker 8 (31:43):
Vin Yeah, I am excited. And when I think about
when the last time the Giant had a premier offensive line,
it was Super Bowl time, right, we won the Super
Bowl that year And I'm not making thes but hey.
Speaker 9 (32:01):
Get him in.
Speaker 8 (32:01):
Did a great job getting Andrew Thomas. He was ranked
i think fourth that year and he took him first
as a lineman. And then since then, Shane has done
a good job over the last two years. If Andrew
Thomas starts, we could we could have the offensive line
(32:22):
played its first game. That's gonna be the decades. Next
line for the Giants Thomas a Zudu, Schmid's mckeithon and
Evan Neil.
Speaker 2 (32:37):
Yes.
Speaker 4 (32:37):
Then, by the way, and by the way, I'm happy
you use the word could there because a lot of
those players do still have to prove that they are
good enough to be starters for the long term. But yes,
in the ideal scenario, you are correct.
Speaker 8 (32:50):
And if you think about it, there was a reason
that PAULI vetch you said, there's a reason mckeithon was
brought back. I saw him play. I had never seen
him before. Body wise, he's he's a big guy.
Speaker 2 (33:04):
He's a box he's a monster. He really he's a
box car.
Speaker 4 (33:07):
He doesn't move. He doesn't move great. He's not a
great movement skow guy. A zoo is a lot more
mobile than he is. But mckeithen's also is much bigger
than a zudo very.
Speaker 8 (33:15):
From Yeah, Zudo is a big guy too. I mean
he he is kind of dwarfs Bretterson and I'm just thinking, hey,
this is.
Speaker 10 (33:26):
Our lines for the next ten years.
Speaker 2 (33:28):
Yeah, and I and I checked it, and I checked it.
Speaker 4 (33:30):
By the way, I was surprised to see this when
I went back and I looked at his combine stuff.
I didn't realize a zoo with thirty four in charms
that that's probably why he was able to survive out
there at tackle with those.
Speaker 2 (33:40):
You know, he has a longer set arms.
Speaker 8 (33:42):
So appreciate you, guys. Let's hope we get we get
a big win this time, and thank you every day.
Speaker 2 (33:51):
Appreciate him man.
Speaker 4 (33:52):
By the way, I'm gonna We're gonna get to one
or two emails here. Big Blue Kickoff at gmail dot
com again, not Big Blue Kick Golf Live, just Big
Blue Kickoff at gmail dot com. I want to sure
letters that you have to type into your computer. All right,
So this is a question from Jamel. I wanted to
bring this up here because it kind of plays into
our last couple of calls. It's in the same theme,
all right. When Andrew Thomas comes back, should you think
(34:18):
about moving a Zoo out to right tackle in place
of Neil or leaving a Zoo at left tackle and
putting Andrew Thomas at right. I will veto the second idea.
Andrew Thomas is your left tackle. That's not changing m hm.
But is a Zuoo at tackle a legit long term
option here or not? I will give my answer first.
(34:40):
I will just say I think right now that is
not a consideration. I think they see a zoo more
as a guard and he's kind of an emergency tackle.
But down the road, if a Zudu comes out, if
it limber this way, he did good for he did
well for one game against Arizona when they do not have.
Speaker 2 (34:57):
A really good edge rusher.
Speaker 4 (35:00):
If he has to play left tackle against San Francisco
and he plays similarly well against the likes of Nick
Bosa and Drake Jackson, then we can have a different conversation.
But I need to see more before we start even
making that a consideration.
Speaker 5 (35:16):
Yeah, I don't think they want him to be a
full time tackle. They would much rather him be a
dominant guard for many years to come. But you know,
it's funny. We've talked over the years about different guys
who have moved out, and it goes all the way
back to Brad Benchon back in the eighties. Justin Pugh
(35:36):
was a guy who moved out to tackle, but then
went back to guard when he got to Arizona. We
saw David Dial play guard and play tackle. Over the
course of a guy's career, sometimes he just winds up
playing where he's capable because that's where the team needs
him to play. And I don't think the Giants feel
a that they have a great need to put him
(36:00):
out at tackle because they still believe in Neil and
then number two. I believe that they think is Zudu's
capabilities are much more valuable at guard because of his
athleticism and ability to come out and pull and do
some things from that.
Speaker 2 (36:15):
Spots just put it this way.
Speaker 4 (36:16):
When they drafted a Zoo too, Paul and we talked
to him a million times after the draft. They did
mention the fact that he was a versatile, but they
talked about him as a guard. They didn't talk about
him as a tackle. Now again, if he proves that
he can do it, okay, then we have another conversation
about it. But I don't think we're at that point yet.
A question from Josh. This actually came in about a
week ago, but I think it's a good time to
answer his question. He met, We mentioned that the team
(36:40):
is staying out west because of the Thursday game. Are
they staying in Tucson? And if so, are they practicing
at the University of Arizona like did a couple a
couple of years ago. So we're in Tempe, which is
right near the ASU campus, so Arizona State, not Arizona,
which is closer to Glendale and closer to the airport
for us to do I think only fifteen minutes in
the air right when we fly out here.
Speaker 2 (37:01):
It's pretty close.
Speaker 4 (37:01):
So yeah, we're we're on the we're on the campus
of Arizona State and the hotel here has done a
nice job.
Speaker 2 (37:06):
It's been great. They have the meeting rooms all set
up downstairs. They've been great.
Speaker 4 (37:09):
The food's been awesome, So the guys the hotel here
has really done a great job taking care of us.
Speaker 2 (37:13):
They hosted the walk through this morning here in the
conference room. They didn't even go to the bubble.
Speaker 5 (37:17):
Giants went and used the Arizona State Bubble of the
last couple of days and then did the conference center
walk through this morning. And you know, that's part of
what we talked about in terms of preparation. You know,
if the Giants had had the opportunity without having to
be vagabonds, you know, to make this vagabonds right like it,
(37:38):
to make this trip to San Francisco, they would have
at least had I don't know, what do you think
of shells practice, They certainly would have done more than
than a jog through or a walkthrough.
Speaker 4 (37:49):
I mean, they might have done a Thursday game. Maybe
usually just do jog throughs be to Thursday games. If
they were home, I don't know, they might they might
have done one shells. They might have maybe, I don't know,
it's hard to say. But in any event, we're just
talking about the absolute minimum of physical practice that you
(38:10):
could possibly imagine by doing walk throughs and jog throughs
and then you know, walking through in the conference room.
Speaker 2 (38:16):
I mean, come on, this.
Speaker 5 (38:17):
Is Dabel said that it's all about the details of
the mental this week. It's all about mental prep one
hundred percent.
Speaker 4 (38:23):
Maron won forty eight cent an email, And yes, I
know we have the calls online, but I want to
get some of these questions.
Speaker 2 (38:28):
They're relevant to this week's game.
Speaker 4 (38:30):
If Carter Coughlin, Paul, do you think if Michael McFadden
cannot go because of that injury he's dealing with the
stinger right, the shoulder injury, whatever it is, Carter Coffin,
Isaiah Simmons, do you think one of those are a
better option?
Speaker 2 (38:48):
Your thoughts well, First up, Dabel said he felt yesterday
that McFadden would be okay and expected that he would
be able to play, So that's first. But should that
not be the case, John, I'm probably inclined to go
with Simmons. I don't know how you feel, but I
would probably go there.
Speaker 5 (39:07):
As long as they feel confident enough that he's got
the playbook down and I know he was still limited
the other day.
Speaker 2 (39:13):
Nephn's have been so limited.
Speaker 4 (39:15):
I just have doesn't seem like they're ready to put
him in there for you know, give him a lot.
Speaker 2 (39:18):
May be forced to man. You know.
Speaker 5 (39:20):
Again, he said last week going into the Arizona game
that he had been given the entire playbook and feel
pretty good about it.
Speaker 2 (39:27):
We'll see.
Speaker 4 (39:28):
Greg Kudish wants to know if we think it's possible
if Dabel took over the play calling in the second
half against Arizona, because they seem to open up the
offense a little bit more. I really don't think that happened.
Brian dables that it hasn't. Mike kaf goes so saying
the plays into Daniel. According to Daniel, guys, look, Brian
Dabele works with Kafka on this stuff. It's not like
(39:48):
Kafka is doing it on his own and Dabel doesn't
put his input in. Trust me, Brian Dabele puts his
input in. So I'm sure they work. But I'm sure
they worked together in the second half. And yeah, they
certainly did try to get the down the field board.
There's no doubt about that.
Speaker 5 (40:01):
Who's the Villa's name who wrote Greg, Greg, Here's what
I would say, if you had been in charge of
this offense, you would have opened things up in the
second half too. So so that in itself, just the
fact that they started winging it downfield, that's not necessarily
an indication that something changed. The bottom line is they
were getting their butts handed to them, but they.
Speaker 2 (40:22):
Needed to get the ball downfield.
Speaker 4 (40:24):
And they figured it out, and the offensive line protected
well enough to allow them to get the ball down
the field with just something that I've tried to stress
this week after we killed them and the fans all
killed them for a week after Dallas that Jalen Hiatt
post corner Paul. That takes time. That's a three second route.
You need to protect other routes. Darren Waller had a
double hour. We kind of ran the little slant and
(40:45):
then he ran a little out off of that.
Speaker 2 (40:47):
He's a nice one too.
Speaker 4 (40:48):
These are not quick routes. The offensive line had to
protect in order to run those plays and they did.
Speaker 5 (40:52):
Now, to be completely fair, Arizona played a very simplistic defense.
They did not get fancied. They did we have to
get complicated and as the Giants were mounting their comeback.
Arizona didn't seem to adjust at all to do anything
to try to short circuit them. Yep, and we need
to at least put that into the puzzle too.
Speaker 4 (41:11):
Sure welly go subscribe to the Johns Little Podcast, folks,
A couple good episodes this week. I talked to Sean
o'howar yesterday we you know, did a little bit on Arizona,
but since he did the rapid Reaction of the day prior,

go check that out on the Giants Little Podcast. And I
think it's up our game preview. It's not up yet,
it will be shortly. I a chance to talk to

Jalen Hyatt Giants Rokie Wide Receiver.
Speaker 2 (41:34):
Go check that out.
Speaker 4 (41:34):

to the phones. Tom and Stratford's up next?
Speaker 2 (42:10):
Hi Tom, Hi, guys, Hi Jo.
Speaker 9 (42:14):
Tell me what jord and Riley didn't play this past Sunday.
Speaker 4 (42:19):
They decided that DJ Davidson was someone they would prefer
to have in there.
Speaker 2 (42:23):
Yep, I don't.
Speaker 4 (42:23):
I don't have a better answer than that. I don't
think Dable was asked about that over the last time.
Speaker 2 (42:27):
I don't remember him being asked.
Speaker 5 (42:28):
And I will tell you I was a surprised with
the list came out and I was like, oh, DJ's up.
Speaker 2 (42:35):
Yeah.
Speaker 9 (42:35):
I thought Riley played very well against the Run in
the first game, and I was disappointed to see he
wasn't in the next game. Do you think he'll play
tomorrow night?
Speaker 2 (42:46):
That's a good question.
Speaker 4 (42:47):
I mean, I don't know how many snaps you're gonna
get behind Leonard Dexter, Nacho and a Shawn anyway. I mean,
you're probably only gonna get a handful because those are
your first four guys up in those spots. So it's
a good question, Tom. I wish I had a better
it's a foy idn't. But you know, what it speaks
to is the depth of this team.
Speaker 2 (43:04):
Though.
Speaker 5 (43:04):
I just want to real quick say to you, the
Giants are really a matchup oriented team, more so than
they've ever been before. Because they have so much depth,
they're very willing to say certain guys are going to
fit better against certain matchup.
Speaker 4 (43:17):
Defensive past, they couldn't do that on defensive line. Depth
was such a weakness last year. It's something they knew
they had to advise this offseason.
Speaker 7 (43:24):
See.
Speaker 9 (43:24):
That's why That's why I agree with the caller from
Maryland who said, you know, our run defense is not
looking so good first two games, so you wanted to
go to a four to three, which is what I
would prefer because I think our alignement and we have
the depth in the line to handle a.
Speaker 2 (43:41):
Four to three.
Speaker 9 (43:42):
If they were to go to a fourth to three, though,
what would you have on the ends and who and
I guess you would have obviously Dexter one of the
defensive tackles positions. Would you put Lennon Williams out on
the end or at the other defensive tackle position.
Speaker 2 (43:58):
No, I mean it would.
Speaker 4 (43:59):
It would be your same in linement probably tom as
what you have in Nickel, where you would have Dexter
and Leo inside, and you would have Disease and Thibodeau
as your two ends.
Speaker 6 (44:08):
Yeah.
Speaker 9 (44:09):
See, I'm more concerned about, like, if we're facing a
running team.
Speaker 4 (44:13):
Well, I mean if if facing a running team, you
go with your five man front and you'd have Leo
Dexter and you know, either a Show or Nacho, and
then you'd have your two edge players outside.
Speaker 5 (44:24):
Yeah, okay, but you would you want to do I
think wants to do. He wants to put four guys
down in the dirt. He doesn't want to go with
three down, two stand ups and make it a five
man front. He's talking about a conventional four man Yeah.
Speaker 4 (44:37):
I guess I don't know why you would do that
though a different look, I guess. Okay, if you if
you're worried about a four man run heavy front, then yeah,
I would put Leo in one of the I would
put Leo and Thibodeaux outside, and I would have probably
a Sean and Dexter b R two inside tackles.
Speaker 2 (44:54):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (44:55):
If you're if your main concern is stopping the run,
that's what I would do.
Speaker 2 (45:00):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (45:01):
And then and then the other thing too, you know,
part of me and I know there's been a lot
of conversation about Thibodeau and and and he has not
been blitzing an awful lot during the first two games,
very little. As a matter of fact, he's been holding
the point of attack, he's been holding the line of scrimmage.
I'm curious, and we haven't had the chance to talk
(45:21):
to Wink this week. I'm curious as to his utilization
and what they're trying to do philosophically sometimes with that front,
because they must see something that's making them do what
they're doing. It's just not the typical send those guys
like mad dogs after the quarterback.
Speaker 2 (45:40):
I just think it's the matter of the way the
two games have gone. Maybe that's true.
Speaker 4 (45:43):
You're down there, you're down that big against Dallas. I mean,
by the time the defense had their second possession against Dallas,
already down sixteen to nothing. Yeah, you know, they trailed
twenty nothing to Arizona in the first half. It's not
like Josh Dobbs is running a bunch of five seven
step drops hit stuff in play action. So I understand
the lack of saxes is frustrating and concerning.
Speaker 2 (46:03):
Quite frankly, I get it.
Speaker 4 (46:05):
They you can still figure out a way to get
a sack or two even if other teams are getting
the ball out quick. One hundred percent agree, no argument,
But I think it's just been the type of offensive
days faced and the game flow the two games has
made it difficult to generate a pass rush.
Speaker 5 (46:19):
And the other thing, John, they are not doing anything
really well in terms of stop in the run these
first two games.
Speaker 4 (46:25):
And a couple and the one time, I don't know
if you watch this play when you rewatch the Giants game, Paul,
they had one of their few times they actually able
to blitz and stunt on a third down and like
a couple guys ran into each other and it just,
you know, tape Thibodeau was coming around on a slanty
almost runs into ol Karak and it just there wasn't
a lot of rhythm there.
Speaker 2 (46:45):
I don't and that's something they practice all the time.
During the course.
Speaker 4 (46:48):
It can't be they have one session in every practice
where that's all they're doing. But I just think maybe
because they haven't had a chance to do it that
much because of the way the games have gone, that
they just haven't kind of hit their rhythm yet on
those types of plays.
Speaker 5 (47:00):
Anyway, I don't think i'd go with four man down
right now is an option.
Speaker 2 (47:04):
That would not be the way I would go. All right,
let's go to coach Marvin and Delaware he's up next.
Speaker 4 (47:07):
Hey, coach, and by the way, especially since they run
so much wide zone the Niners, you actually want to
have five guys out?
Speaker 2 (47:12):
Why at your front? A little bit? True, coach, what's.
Speaker 10 (47:15):
Up my two favorite guys doing?
Speaker 2 (47:18):
We're you great, coach? How are you all right?
Speaker 10 (47:22):
The four to three? I just don't think they got
the personnel to play a four to three. You don't
have the down lineans to play it and play it
consistently the way you want to play it. Either you're
gonna be one way or the other, either they stop
or rushing the ball. I don't I'm not a fan
of that. You're gonna play a four to three, then
draft four three players?
Speaker 4 (47:43):
And I agree Marvin, how about this, I'm wanna throw
I just thought of a different award.
Speaker 2 (47:46):
Is the other guy?
Speaker 4 (47:47):
What if you put Hattie at end and then you
have Dexter and Leo Insie you literally as literally what
I was about to say.
Speaker 2 (47:52):
I guess you could do that too, But I don't think.
I don't really think it's an option. So I don't
think we have to worry about it.
Speaker 10 (47:57):
I don't think they're going to do that. I think
that zero chance that happens.
Speaker 2 (48:02):
Yeah, I don't think it happens.
Speaker 10 (48:05):
Yeah, I'm not a fan of ward H being a
uh down for three defensive end either. It's just not
it's not a big threat to me, that's my opinion.
It's just not a big threat. It doesn't put fear
in anybody. They don't have that defensive end. You don't
have a Michael straighthand or talk of those dudes on
(48:25):
the degrease. So I'm not a fan of it. But
as we're talking about more pressure, we don't even know
what they're acting Thibodeau to do, are they because sometimes
they know you stop the run, worry about the run,
then you worry about the past. Well, he's not putting
his ears back and just going. I don't know how
you guys feel about it, but I because we're not
(48:47):
in the room. But I've never seen him do it.
But I would like to see him move around. I
would like to see him switch sides. Put him on
the on their left side.
Speaker 2 (48:57):
I've switched him a little bit. Coach actually played on
the left side a lot against Arizona.
Speaker 10 (49:04):
Yeah he did, okay, because I couldn't see it because
where I'm at the game wasn't I didn't see the game.
I was looking at it on red zone, so I
can only see or I could see some of the
highlights on it and see where he's coming from. So
that's that's good. Here, this is gonna be a tough game.
I'm gonna go to where Paul went. This is gonna
(49:26):
be a tough game. But but you know, I just
saw something more TV. I just saw the like ten
point underdogs. I think I think they can play a
good game just tomorrow night. The reason I say that
is because they're already out there by the West coast,
so it's not really a long travel. If they played
on the East coast this Sunday, they'd be still here
(49:48):
and they're gonna have to travel up to the West
coast and play. They're already out there in that time zone,
so I think that's gonna play a role. I'm hoping.
As complicated as to San Francisco's run game is, they're
very good at movement and motions and all those things.
(50:10):
I'm thinking myself, maybe I bring I don't give them
a lot of space as far as between the secondary
and in the line of scrimmage where because I think
it they may want to get the ball out quick.
So maybe the safeties can come down, don't play as
deep as they normally do, Maybe come down a little bit,
they close those gaps down a little bit. Maybe something
(50:32):
like that. I'm not sure. I'm just doing things against
the wall to figure out a way to slow them down.
That's the only thing I can think of it, because
this is gonna be a difficult task for them based
on the first six quarters we saw. But I'm encouraged
by the last two quarters I saw, and I'm gonna
(50:56):
When I said, I'm gonna go where Paul went and
he said he don't like doing that, It's okay to
put things on players, and I did last week. I
put it on Daniel on my Instagram. The first thing
I said was, this is not about Barkley like I
normally say, this is gonna be about Daniel Jones. And
Daniel Jones did come out and play well, outstanding, And
(51:19):
a lot of people talking about the play. Did they
switch who called? I don't believe they switched. I believe
what happened is in the locker room at halftime, Dable
may have said, we got to make a play. Let's
just go down the street. I go down the field
and make a play. Let him run a nine route
and get it up there. So when you are at
(51:39):
halftime and you're talking like that offensive line knows what's coming,
the bid receivers knows what's coming. Everybody on the team
knows what's coming. So you prepare. You prepare yourself mentally
physically when you get ready to go back there. Not
that they don't always do it, but it's different when
you're in play and you calling plays and then you say, okay,
let's run let's run a nine route and see if
(52:00):
we can get it downfield. And you know what's that
about a twenty five seconds you got when you get
that to go and do it. Compared the halftime. So mentally,
I think they came out and what did that do?
That just pushed them on their heels. Soon as Hyatt
got that pass, they were on their heels and you
(52:21):
could see.
Speaker 5 (52:22):
Let me ask you both the question, coach, Marvin and John.
I'm gonna ask both of you. I'm I'm thinking to myself,
the way that Ward plays, I could see Hyatt making
a move on him, getting him to bite, and then
running past him. If you hit Hyatt early on a
bomb like you did in the third quarter in Arizona,
what do you.
Speaker 2 (52:41):
Think that would do in San Francisco. That's the way
I'd want to see.
Speaker 10 (52:47):
That's where I was doing. I did that as a coach.
I wouldn't do it on the first place. I did
it on the second play. I would do it in
a play where we would have a half back option pass.
We'll do a sweet because they see us do it
and my films all the time.
Speaker 2 (53:01):
Mm hmm.
Speaker 10 (53:02):
But those good teams they haven't seen it where we're
come out in it. They see it's a sweet and
they and then I get those guys coming up. But
it's a half back option passed where I can get
the ball down.
Speaker 5 (53:17):
Yeah, don't wait for they don't wait to use the
play as a spark until after you're down.
Speaker 2 (53:23):
Try to make try to do that right right out
of the box.
Speaker 4 (53:26):
Hey, look, this is something that that Jonathan can see.
It says all the time. And you know mean, I'm
always in I think you have to throw the ball
down the field if you want to be a big
time offense in this league.
Speaker 2 (53:35):
I think you have to. And I'm with you, coach Marvin. Look,
I I'm with you.
Speaker 4 (53:38):
I think I think it's what you gotta do it
early and you got to make and this is what again,
jac says this all the time. You have to make
them fear your downfield passing game because it opens up
a lot a lot of other things you want to
do in your offense.
Speaker 10 (53:50):
That's right, And Paul, back to what you were just
saying about that, I don't even think this dude does
not need a double move. He was running by them fast,
he ran, He ran by two of them.
Speaker 2 (54:08):
Yeah yeah, and.
Speaker 10 (54:10):
Further downfield he would have scored.
Speaker 3 (54:13):
He had to weight on the ball.
Speaker 10 (54:14):
He out ran the ball.
Speaker 2 (54:17):
He's special.
Speaker 4 (54:19):
Yeah, it is amazing. And what by the way, he
is I think thank you, coach, appreciate the call we have.
He's run a deeper average route than any other player
in the league so far this year, Hiatt, So they've
chosen to use him in very specific circumstances. And he
also I believe has an average miles per hower on
this route, probably because they are all deeper routes. By
(54:41):
the way, there's the deeper the route, the faster you're
gonna run. So I think he has his fast I
think he is the fastest average miles prower on his
routes of any wide receiver this year. The problem is
that at your point on the double move. Double moves
require a lot of protection, I know. But maybe maybe
on a play action pass so buys you a little
bit more time to run the double if you get
him quickly there asleep. Yeah maybe maybe the not is
(55:02):
you're asleep early on and you hit him. Look, speaking
of which, you do have to come out of the
gate better this week. If you get down two scores
in the first half of this game, you're done.
Speaker 5 (55:10):
So I'm gonna tell you this right now, and and
you you know, you know this is not me. You
have to try to make this a higher scoring game
because You're not gonna beat the Nineers seventeen to fourteen.
Speaker 2 (55:22):
No, that's not happening.
Speaker 4 (55:24):
When I say at the top of the show, five
st regular season games are at least thirty points, Okay,
it's not gonna happen.
Speaker 5 (55:29):
You gotta score, yo, yo. This is gonna have to
be thirty one, twenty eight, thirty four thirty. It's gonna
have to be that kind of game if the Giants
have a chance.
Speaker 4 (55:37):
All right, So we got a couple more email questions.
Then I'm gonna get to you Tim as well. Don't worry,
we'll get to you well. First, Big Homie loke four
one three. First, he thinks Charlie iss an undercover Jet
fan because the way.
Speaker 2 (55:47):
He's negative about the Giants.
Speaker 4 (55:50):
Paul and I have met Charlie in person, we can
attest he is actually a Giants fans, despite his uh tendency.
Speaker 2 (55:56):
To be a little bit negative.
Speaker 4 (55:58):
His question is, with defenses like Dallas and the Niners,
don't you think you could help if Daniels started using
a hard snap coount more the same way Eli used
to back in the day and Aaron Rodgers used to
catch a lot of defenders off guard with that too.
Here's the problem. You can't do it on the road
in a loud building. You have to be able to
do it at home. Now, in Week one against Dallas,
I guess you could have. Unfortunately, that building got loud
(56:20):
for the Cowboys relatively quickly in that game because it
went so poorly for the Giants early. But yes, big homie,
that is something.
Speaker 5 (56:27):
You can do, especially with a team that gets off
the snap as quickly as they do with their front four.
But John is right, if the crowd gets into it,
it kind of eliminates that possibility. So you can have
to pick your spots to do it early in the
game while it's still close on maybe an early down,
so that maybe instead of a first and ten you
got a first and five. Yeah, because you were able
(56:48):
to create something.
Speaker 4 (56:48):
And just maybe they don't get quite as quick off
the ball. Maybe they're worried about the snapcount too. James Ballpall.
He says one underrated play from Sunday's game, Eric Rad's
fourteen yard punt return. Yes, when they were down twenty
eight twenty one. I know you're big on specials, so
I didn't give you a chance to reply to that.
Speaker 5 (57:04):
Yeah, it was It was a very important play, and
it's one of the reasons why I think the Giants
are going to keep Gray as their primary return guy,
because going into the season, they figured they give him
a shot.
Speaker 2 (57:15):
It was going to be a trial by fire and see,
you know, could you hold it down? And he made
good decisions and on that play he actually, you know,
got them some yards. And then James is funny.
Speaker 4 (57:24):
He goes, how about them apples Donnie from Queens because
Donnie is the one that's been calling up asking about
Gray Putt returns. But then he puts in parentheses, now
Grey's following Putt return at.
Speaker 2 (57:33):
Twenty eight twenty eight.
Speaker 4 (57:34):
That one was maybe a bit dicey, But let's focus
on the positive here, which I think is.
Speaker 2 (57:38):
Hey, they they got the ball, they got possession. That's
all the mappen. Yes, yes they did. But I you know,
that was funny. Here's a here's a good one.
Speaker 5 (57:45):
I don't know, I didn't look at your script yet
for the for the pregame show. Yes, uh, what do
you think is gonna happen if Blacklee doesn't play? Will
Breda be the bell cow? Or will they divvy things
up between Brightwell, Gray and breed and all three of
them are going to see packages, which is what I
think is going to happen.
Speaker 2 (58:04):
I agree with you. I think they divvy it up. Yeah,
and I there will. There might be a question in
fact or fiction over on there about I didn't even
look yet, even look at it might be that's a
one of them. But I think all three backs will
get touches in the game. I really do.
Speaker 4 (58:20):
Uh two o one nine three nine four five one
three two one nine three nine four five one three.
Speaker 2 (58:25):
Let's wrap this up with Tim and Charleston. Tim, what's
going on?
Speaker 4 (58:27):
I want to try to sneak a workout any here
before you can get on a plane in San Francisco.
Speaker 2 (58:31):
All right, gonna be tight. What's up? Tim?
Speaker 3 (58:34):
Hey, guys, I'm gonna be quick. Just I have a
couple of questions about guys from last year. You can
shoot it and give me your answers. Real rapid fire
here carrying seamers, still on the practice squad, right, yes, yes, okay.
So do you think it was more performance or is
it more he's still recovering?
Speaker 6 (58:51):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (58:52):
It was okay, Yes, I don't think he played well
enough to make the fifty three mckeithn doc your job
beating him out.
Speaker 2 (58:58):
Now if beav no keithan mcfatth mcfid. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (59:01):
Now, now if he maybe the performance has to do
with his health, I can't answer that question. But yeah,
it wasn't a deal where we're like hiding a beaus
he still injured.
Speaker 2 (59:09):
That that was not it. He didn't come out of
the box at two hundred fifty miles an hour and
that's for sure correct.
Speaker 3 (59:14):
And then I know you're out of time, so I'm
going to cut one out and go right to the
big one.
Speaker 2 (59:18):
Is it is sure?
Speaker 3 (59:20):
Daniel Bellinger? Now obviously game floll I think had more
to do both of first the first six quarters with
why I don't even remember seeing or hearing him. I'm
sure he was on the field a bit. But is
what do you think about about Bellinger and working him
in with you know, with Waller and the slot and
(59:42):
Dellinger in line and creating some you know, maybe some
open shots for Bellinger to get some first downs. I mean,
do you think that's a feasible part of the game plan?
Speaker 2 (59:53):
Yeah, good question, Tim.
Speaker 4 (59:55):
In week one, the Giants used twelve personnel, probably more
than they did in any game last year. It was
their primary personnel package. Yeah, so in week one they
used that a lot. I'm looking up week two now
because I actually did not check that for the game
against Arizona.
Speaker 2 (01:00:13):
It's a short week. I only have so much time
to look back at stuff. So in week two we
had a grouping a place. Well, I'm looking up right now.
I can say exactly what they did.
Speaker 4 (01:00:20):
So not a surprise, given they were down forty seven
of there that would be sixty eight offensive snaps. We're
out of eleven personnel, nineteen were out of twelve personnel,
and two were out of twenty two personnel, which is
two running backs and two tight ends.
Speaker 3 (01:00:37):
So how many targets has he had? Do you know that?
Off him?
Speaker 2 (01:00:43):
I can check that too.
Speaker 5 (01:00:44):
Here's what I will say, Jam, I do think that
you're gonna have to see some more two tight ends
because you're gonna need Bellinger to help out against that rush.
Speaker 2 (01:00:53):
I mean, that's just common sense.
Speaker 5 (01:00:56):
You know how dangerous that forty nine is run four is,
and if you can just give Daniel that extra half
a second, I think he's gonna be.
Speaker 2 (01:01:04):
Able to do something with the ball.
Speaker 4 (01:01:06):
So I'm not thinking that Bellinger is gonna be going
out much for passes even when he's in the game,
but on an occasional surprise, maybe he can catch a key,
a key one at a key moment. So he had
forty four snaps in week one, but just twenty eight
in week two, and again that's a lot of that's
game flow.
Speaker 3 (01:01:21):
Yeah, all right, thank you guys. I'll look forward to
the game tomorrow night, and if my fingers crossed that
we can at least keep it close and interesting into
the fourth quarter. That's my hope right now.
Speaker 4 (01:01:32):
Thanks Tim, appreciate the call, my friend, Giant fans. Tomorrow,

Do you have any final thoughts Ball before the game?
Real quick, let's just go have a blast.
Speaker 4 (01:02:33):
Yes, and just look just play good football again, you know,
I just just play good, solid Giants football. You still
might end up losing the game, and that's okay, but
I want to just feel good that the baseline level
of play for this team is much higher than it
was in the first six quarters of the season this year.
Speaker 2 (01:02:52):
In short, you'd like to see the Giants start to
formulate their true identity. Yes, correct, I think that's a
great point. Fortball, Latino. I'm John Shmouth.
Speaker 4 (01:03:00):
Thanks to Don back in the shop and again, go
