Timp you, Rising Vision, Flurry Rage, take it over. Here's
Paul Calvic.
Speaker 1 (00:51):
I'm ready.
Speaker 3 (00:52):
I'm one hundred percent ready.
Speaker 1 (00:53):
I'm telling you I'm ready.
Speaker 3 (00:55):
And Ron Wolfley, it doesn't get any better than that.
Speaker 1 (01:00):
The field, all.
Speaker 4 (01:02):
Right, let's be honest. The race for best Super Bowl
commercial was more contested and competitive than the Super Bowl itself.
I mean the length of the national anthem. Ron Wolfley,
the over under went down to the wire and was
way more of a barn burner than Eagles versus Chiefs.
Taylor swift getting booed had much more of an edge
(01:24):
to it than anything that Chiefs brought. As the Philadelphia Eagles,
it's official, are built football tough. They are at top
of the NFL. And guess what tomorrow they're gonna throw
a parade to prove it. It's the Big Red Rage
presented by santan Ford and Gilbert. We are santan Ford,
Paul calvic here, Ron Wolfy there.
Speaker 1 (01:43):
Well, you knew that John Pattiz PAULI was going to
sing over over the a minute in twenty seconds, I
believe was the over and under was supposed to be
a minute twenty to me, you knew he was going
to go over on that one, right, I mean, what
guy is going to get up there in front of
the football universe and not get his fill if you
(02:04):
know what I mean?
Speaker 4 (02:04):
Okay, but to hold one note towards the end for
eight seconds and to repeat Land of the Free and
sing that three different times in a row of fishy
fishy as it. Some sports books paid the over and
some paid the under. That's how close it was, Ron
wolf Lake, boy, you're.
Speaker 1 (02:21):
All over that, Paully. It is incredible.
Speaker 4 (02:23):
I forget that we got a heavy hitter. Tonight, Justin
Peugh is going to be our guest here on the
Big Red Rage presented by Santan Ford and Gilbert, former
Cardinals offensive lineman eleven years in the league. I'm not
sure he's officially retired as of yet, and he's found
a very unique way to stay in the game. We're
going to talk about all that. We're going to get
his thoughts on the Cardinals, on Kyler, on the run, game,
(02:45):
on the trenches, and we'll get into the Super Bowl
in depth a little bit later.
Speaker 1 (02:48):
Wolf.
Speaker 4 (02:49):
But there's no doubt you win the line of scrimmage,
you win the game. And isn't that exactly what just
happened in Super Bowl fifty nine.
Speaker 1 (02:56):
Yeah, I think it's really appropriate that we have Justin
Pugh coming up Paul for that very thing right there, Man,
it was on display for all to see once again.
The Philadelphia Eagles won this game largely on the line
of scrimmage. Now, I know you could say, hey, Wolf,
what are you talking about? You know what? They shut
down Saquon Barkley. He had twenty five carries for fifty
(03:20):
seven yards. They shut him down right there. Yeah, you
know what You're right about that they did. But it
was still the commitment to run the ball that allowed
Jalen Hurts to make the impact in this game the
way that he did. I knew coming in BALI this
was going to be about Jalen Hurts. I thought it
was going to be more about Jalen Hurts than it
(03:40):
was Pat Mahomes. If Jalen Hurts went out and for
the most part played well, boy, you could see a
path where the Eagles were going to win that game.
Having said that, that's exactly what happened, and it was
because Jalen Hurts played so well.
Speaker 4 (03:55):
It turns out he led all ball carriers. He led
both teams in rushing with seventy two yard was rushing. Now,
of course, there was so much attention on Saquon Barkley,
and just Saquon Barkley commanding all that attention opened up
a lot of other things for that Eagles offense. There's
no doubt about that. But you look at the way
Howie Rosaman built that team, and to have five offensive
linemen who all got votes in all Pro voting, to
(04:17):
have that dominant defensive line where you could rush for
and drop seven and that's exactly what Vic Fangio did.
So it's all very intriguing and interesting and how it
all came to be, And honestly, a lot of the
build up was more entertaining than the game itself as
we tried to convey right there, including speaking of guys
who are staying in the game. Justin Pugh has his
(04:40):
own series on YouTube. We'll get to that. Jamis Winston
was a special correspondent for Fox Wolf and if you
caught any of this, the suit who gave him his
gig and gave him the microphone should get a raise
because it was highly entertaining as they put Jamis Winston
to work covering the Super Bowl.
Speaker 3 (04:56):
Hey, Jameis, I heard you been eating a lot of me. Yes,
have w bing a but I heard it is only
one of you.
Speaker 5 (05:03):
Well, Jamis, please take your time and eat me so
you can savor every moment.
Speaker 6 (05:09):
I see y'all, and I know y'all see me, and
we got cameras that can see y'all seeing me.
Speaker 3 (05:14):
So come and let me on the boat.
Speaker 1 (05:15):
This purd but drank his dank.
Speaker 3 (05:17):
Yes, it is nothing better than this. Oh my god,
can I help you with your celebration?
Speaker 1 (05:23):
All right? I know FM huge. We talk about to
touch our slide.
Speaker 6 (05:26):
I want you to slide to the lift, slide to
the right.
Speaker 4 (05:30):
Chris crowded to eat a w and walk off that thing.
It's not everyone who can give a touchdown celebration advice
to AJ Brown, and he actually use that advice and
used it in the end zone after his Super Bowl score.
Speaker 1 (05:42):
Paulie, what's amazing about this? I had to check this
out on YouTube because I didn't see it live. Okay,
when the Super Bowl is on, I get up and
walk around when the commercials come on. Okay, I walk
back when it's all done. All this stuff. I didn't
even see Jameis win say. I heard about Jamis Winston,
so I had to go check him out.
Speaker 4 (06:03):
Yeah, he's got tons of on camera charisma. He definitely
has a future in broadcasting if and when he so chooses.
So there's that, and then there's the start of the offseason. Okay,
super Bowl fifty nine is in the books twenty twenty five.
It is upon us. For example, today, three hundred and
twenty nine players invited to the NFL combine, including as
(06:24):
running back Cam Scataboo. By the way, not a surprise
the Headliners, Heisman winner Travis Hunter, the two top quarterbacks,
cam Ward Schadeur Sanders. That was news. The Jets announced
formally today that they have told Aaron Rodgers they are
moving on without him in twenty twenty five. So he gone,
(06:45):
Jets moving on, the new GM and the new head coach,
Aaron Glenn. And then here's one for your wolf. Do
you see where the Steelers reportedly have made inquiries to
the Jaguars about a trade for quarterback Trevor Lawrence.
Speaker 1 (06:58):
I did not see that ball.
Speaker 4 (07:01):
And there's a lot of speculation. Now, wait a minute,
it was a source out of the Jags organization, according
to the reporter. Are they letting it be known that
Trevor Lawrence is on the open market because the new
head coach, Liam Cohen would prefer to go elsewhere, And so,
especially in the shadow of the Luca trade, you wonder
if there's going to be some seismic happenings in the
(07:21):
NFL this offseason.
Speaker 1 (07:23):
PAULI, I don't think there's any doubt about it. I
think this is the way that it's going to go.
If in fact, you want to shop a guy, make
an announcement, you know, let it be known, and I
think that could be what is going on right now.
It's just a situation where it's very difficult if you're
Trevor Lawrence to remain focused on what it is that
(07:44):
you're doing, especially with all the change they've had. A
brand new paradigm is being brought into Jacksonville right now.
In terms of Aaron Rodgers, PAULI, man, it looks like
he is done. I think that he has done right now.
And one of the reasons why I say that, it's
because he's he's such a strong personality to bring into
(08:08):
a football team. I don't see him being a mentor
type guy to a younger quarterback. I don't see him
accepting that role. And because of that, I think it's
going to limit his options.
Speaker 4 (08:20):
Yeah, I agree, the distraction factor, right, the circus factor
that goes along with Aaron Rodgers. I mean, there could
be a lot to like in him being a mentor
and you know, maybe being a backup in all his experience,
But yeah, is it worth? Is juice worth the squeeze
on that one? Hey join the Cardinal season ticket waitlist

about the season ticket member benefits. Just go to Hazycardinals
dot com slash waitlist. All right, Justin Pugh, he is
next found a unique way to stay in the game.
We'll talk all about that. You'll hear about it when
we come back. It is the Big Red Rage, presented
by santan Ford and Gilbert. We are sandtan Ford.
Speaker 1 (09:02):
Man.
Speaker 7 (09:02):
Justin mydog man. I mean, I feel like New York
City should look at That's what I call him. He
going back home. We're going to New York this week.
You should hear him walking around the facility talking and
his whole accent is changing. You should have heard him
on the following David Talkerson about how you doing.
Speaker 1 (09:15):
Sweetheart on the pot.
Speaker 7 (09:16):
I said, Bro, you from Philadelphia doing, don't even tall
like that?
Speaker 1 (09:20):
Phi.
Speaker 7 (09:22):
It might just be something to happen you when you
go back to still familiar place. But he's definitely Tony
Belongi's right now. He's one hundred percent of New York
City right now.
Speaker 4 (09:30):
Hey, don't mind if I do. You know what I'm
talking about. It's the two man comedy team that always
was DJ Humphreys and Justin Peugh, and Justin Peugh joins
us tonight on the Big Red Rage presented by santan
Ford and Gilbert. We are santan Ford and there's a guy,
Justin Peugh who does hail from outside Philadelphia. Like, you know,
you don't have one of those nicknames, do you, Like
(09:52):
you know, like Tommy DeVito, right, he was Tommy Cutlet's right.
He swept through New York. And I mean, do you
ever go by like Justin Hogi or you know, Justin
bon Jovi, Justin parm I mean you never had a
nickname like that, did you?
Speaker 8 (10:05):
No? No, I never did. There definitely are you have
the Italians down there? I married into an Italian family
as well. My wife's family's Italian and they're from just
outside of Philadelphia as well. So I don't know what
I'm saying.
Speaker 1 (10:18):
There's there.
Speaker 8 (10:18):
You know, sometimes you go home, you start to if
anything in Philadelphia, you start saying wooter and things of
that nature. So I tried to hide that as much
as possible.
Speaker 1 (10:28):
Justin how are you doing, man? How are you?
Speaker 8 (10:30):
I'm doing great?
Speaker 1 (10:31):
Well.
Speaker 8 (10:32):
If I was down in New Orleans for the Super Bowl,
didn't go to the game, but I went down there.
I met up with a bunch of former players, guys
that I played with, played against, and really starting to
figure out what I'm going to do in the next
chapter of my life. Haven't officially retired yet. I'm still
weighing some options. But it was good to get down
there and see some friendly faces.
Speaker 4 (10:52):
You know, we like to build ourselves here in the
Big Red Rage as the original Thursday Night Football, but
you took Thursday Night Football to a whole new level
just and for those who aren't familiar, you launched the
Thursday Football Club and you went around every Thursday Night
Football game this year and just hung out with the fans.
You told the experience of an NFL game from the
fan perspective, and especially now that's the off season. If
(11:15):
you want to stay connected to the NFL, you just
go to YouTube. You search Justin Pugh or YouTube dot
com slash at Justin Pugh sixty seven. Give us a
quick description of what fans might find and what you
did this past season.
Speaker 8 (11:27):
Yeah, so I pitched the NFL. I'm like, you guys
need someone in the trenches with the fans watching the
games from the stands, and ended up finding someone to
Actually I didn't have a sponsor. We didn't have a
sponsor on the show, and I just went to the
Kansas City Chiefs Baltimore Ravens Week one game, sat with
the fans, went to the tailgates, got to see kind
of how you know, how much fandom impact the community.
(11:50):
I went to the barbecue place, I went to the
downtown and got some you know, got Kansas City Chiefs. Overall,
I made it my one of my rules. I would
always I bought the home team, So I went to
Kansas City. I repped their gear. I refused to wear
some team's jerseys, like the Eagles. I would never wear
an Eagles jersey. But yeah, I got to sit with
(12:11):
the fan, they hear their story, and it was such
a great experience. I've been on the other side of
the equation for so long, and a lot of times
you get you know, you get lost in your own
reality and you just see everything through a player's perspective
or an organization's perspective. Sitting with the fans really changed
the way I view the game, and it's definitely something
I look forward to doing in the future.
Speaker 1 (12:33):
Justin Yeah, how much weight have you lost because watching
some of those Thursday night specials since you were doing
right there? I mean you've lost a ton of weight, dude.
Speaker 8 (12:45):
Well, I came back and played for the New York Giants,
like fifteen to twenty pounds heavier. I was playing left
tackle in the NFL. Twenty pounds heavier. I'm probably right
around two sixty five to seventy right now and probably
had to put fifteen twenty pounds on if the right team,
right organization gave me a call. But enjoying the knees
feel a whole lot better not being three hundred plus pounded.
Speaker 4 (13:09):
All right, So, eleven years in the NFL, justin Pere
is our guest. Five years with the Cardinals. You watched
the Super Bowl, and I mean it's hard not to
watch that game and say, win the line of scrimmage,
win the game, right, And if you're every other team
that doesn't have Patrick Mahomes, isn't that the answer? Just
winning the trenches? You know, kram At vertical with the
run game play really stout defense, and that's your formula.
(13:32):
Was that one of your big takeaways from this past
Super Bowl?
Speaker 8 (13:36):
Yeah? I mean the Eagles and I played against the
Eagles for years now and how they've always built their team.
I will say they stole a little bit of their
model from the New York Giants who started putting four
defensive ends on the field back with Justin tuck Osumanjora,
and then you look around the league when Aaron Donald
came into the situation of having a dominant interior rusher.
(13:56):
The Eagles just took it and have made it their
philosophy the last twenty years, and they dominated up front.
They didn't blitz a single time during that game, got
after the Chiefs offensive line. I mean, we heard from
DJ Humphrey earlier making fun of me, but I wish
he would have had a chance to go out there
and didn't have the injury bug if he could have
played for the Chiefs, because they could have used them.
(14:16):
They were moving their offensive line around and eventually Patrick
Mahomes can't do it all and it showed, and that
was obviously the the the difference in the Super Bowl.
Speaker 1 (14:27):
Justin have you ever seen a defense that, through the
course of an entire game didn't even bring five They
rushed for the whole time. You ever seen that.
Speaker 8 (14:38):
I've never experienced or seen that in my entire career.
I just think, Hey, if this ain't broke, don't fix it.
They're gonna keep seving a coverage and they're gonna plitz.
They're gonna, you know, not blitz. They're gonna rush four.
And when you have guys like Jalen Carter and Nolan
Smith and Josh Schwett and then Milton Milton Williams came
on their other defensive tackle, it's a it's a it's
(14:59):
as thing to see. The Eagles have always done that.
It's so impressive because think about this, Bryce Huffed their
highest paid defensive signing this offseason. They made him a
healthy scratch. They're paying him seventeen million dollars a year
to watch. I played against Bryce Huff last two years ago,
and I thought he was the best edge rusher as
(15:19):
the New York Jets had at the time. When he
went to Philadelphia, I said, oh my gosh, this is
a problem. Clearly he doesn't fit in the vict Fangio scheme.
Maybe the Cardinals should call the Eagles and try to
trade for him. But the fact that they were able
to do it with not even the top paid players
they had they let us on Reddit walk. They had
Bryce Huff as the healthy scratch. That makes it even
(15:41):
more impressive. Kind of a major tip of the cap
to Howie Rosenman, how they draft, how they manipulate cap,
and how they pay their players. They have just had
more talent on the field than most teams they play against.
Speaker 1 (15:53):
No doubt.
Speaker 4 (15:54):
Justin pe our guest, all right, so let's talk Cardinals.
You mentioned Djamfries. In fact, that'll be our segue here
about today's Cardinals. You had DJ on a recent podcast
a little while ago. I think it was Paris who
was getting ready to start his NFL career, And here's
what you guys talked about in terms of the Cardinals
franchise left tackle.
Speaker 8 (16:11):
I was at breakfast with and my wife the other
day and I saw Paris and I look up to him.
I'm like his little brother.
Speaker 9 (16:19):
I'm like, all right, mist all right, mister Johnson, if
you need help with anything, just let me know, let
me know.
Speaker 8 (16:27):
I'm here to. I mean, that starts making me think, like, man,
I gotta get my ass out of the league.
Speaker 4 (16:33):
So if you're maniaso for it, Cardinals GM and head
coach Johnathan Gannon and their philosophy is to build from
the inside out. Right, They're not taking you in the
first couple of rounds unless your hand is in the dirt.
That sort of makes sense in today's NFL, doesn't it.
Speaker 8 (16:49):
It made a ton of sense. I think Paris Johnson
showed what he's capable of this year moving over to
the left side. Had a tremendous season. Unfortunate with the
injury towards the end, but the future is right there. Obviously.
You have fro Holt in the middle that got him
signed under contract. Jodanah Williams. I know they they were,
they were high on him and the injury and things
didn't work out great there will Hernandez got hurt. But
(17:11):
I mean, I really believe you build through the trenches,
and the one area that the Cardinals have lacked in
is on the other side of the ball with the
defensive line and continuing to build it. So there's there's
a there's a lot to talk about and a lot
to unpack trenches in Arizona. So I look forward to it.
But I would tell you that leftack was not an
area of concern for the next decade.
Speaker 1 (17:33):
Yeah, justin what about those schemes that they reson the
Cardinals are running and the skulls that they actually have
executing those schemes right now, when you look at the
Cardinals rushing attack, what do you see.
Speaker 8 (17:46):
Well, the one thing that you always have in your
rushing attack is Kyler Murray and his ability to pull
the ball. And I'm not saying he's gonna pull the
ball and he's gonna rush ten times a game, but
there's a point in time where you have to account
for Kyler Murray and he's able to neutral any box
that a team lines up with. I played with I
played with Eli Manning early on in my career, had
(18:07):
no threat of the run, and no one ever had
a safety. Year had to play for the zone key.
And then you had the way James Connor was running.
They were running a lot of gaps scheme where they
were running duo up front, where they were letting their
offensive line get bodies on. I think it was a
massive injury when Will Hernandez went down. He was playing
his best football of his career and they were running
some counter schemes with Will getting him out in space. Luckily,
(18:30):
you guys have Kelvin Beacham, who's been that veteran common
presence who could step in and play tackle. When Johan
and Williams went down and slide over to left tackle.
But I did love the way the team came out
and established a run, established identity because well, if you
know as well as anybody, when you come out and
you run the ball and you have that angry running
back in James Connor, you have Trey Benson back there,
(18:51):
who can be that change of pace guy, it really
sets a tone that when you come and play the
Arizona Cardinals, this is how we're going to make our living.
You got Tim Ryman, who was the rookie who's come in.
He's able to block and do things in space. So
I really love how the Cardinals are building their identity
because that's something that I think we lacked at times
when I was on the team.
Speaker 4 (19:12):
You know, Justin and Justin Pere is our guests here
in the Big Red Rage. When I explained the game
of football to Wolf, you know, I try and simplify
it for him is you know, it's quarterback, it's get
to the quarterback. It's protect that quarterback getting to the quarterback.
If you're the Cardinals, you're one of those teams and
there's plenty of them that don't have that premier pass rusher.
To what degree would you trade the house for a
Miles Garrett, to what degree would you pay big money
(19:35):
for maybe a Josh Sweat on the open market? How
how necessary, how urgent is it to try and find
that guy who can be premier double digit sack guy
year after year.
Speaker 8 (19:46):
Yeah, I mean, I think you have to look at
it from a holistic approach.
Speaker 1 (19:48):
Right.
Speaker 8 (19:48):
Obviously, Miles Garrett, you're going to trade the future. I
don't know if the Cardinals want to do that. They
have cap space and they have draft capital, so I
think this is a very strong defensive line draft. I
think you would the defensive tackles that got invited to
the combine this year versus last year. I think it's
almost double. You have Darius Robinson, who he took in
the first round last year. I would like to see.
(20:11):
You know, there's there's veterans out there like Khalil Mack
that potentially could be on the market. The Josh Schwetz,
the Milton Williams that have played for Gannon. I'm pretty
sure they both played under Gannon that know that system.
So I do I do like that. I would appreciate it.
I I really think you look at the draft as
a way to retool this defensive line. It's something that
(20:31):
I've talked about with Steve Kin, even when I was
on the team. They had it. They took a big
swing and they missed on on Robert Mdichi. They thought
that he was going to be that next Aaron Donald,
and he had he had some of the best get
off of any defensive lineman I've ever been around. Obviously,
it just didn't pan out, and we never had that
premiere interior rusher that struck any type of fear in
(20:53):
an offensive line. And I still look at this Arizona
Cardinals team like we need more on the defensive line.
I think last year we were ahead of maybe where
the plan would be. This is the season where the
Cardinals I think make the biggest jump, get over the hump,
get back into the playoffs, and I think it starts
with defensive line. Defensive line, defensive line. I love gard Deck,
(21:15):
I love David Collins or and start to like I said,
strike fear in the offense is when you play them.
Look at what you could do with just two draft
picks in LA with Jared Versu and Fisk, and how
that kind of change the narrative for the Rams. The
Cardinals had the ability to go out and do that
this year in the draft and in free agency.
Speaker 1 (21:36):
So justin when you look at Trey McBride, I look
at that tight end and I see a tight end
that is on the line of scrimmage. I see a
tight end that you can move off. He can be
the move tight end as well. But what I love
most about Trey McBride is he can be a true
stud tight end. When you watch him play, what do
you see good?
Speaker 8 (21:58):
I love Trey McBride does it all the dirty works.
He runs across the middle, he blocks. I mean I
talked about Tip earlier, but like you can leave tramc
bride out there an eleven personnel, which is three receivers
in one tight end, you can still run one back
power and he can hand then and he'll then release
and run by the starting safety. He is such a mismatch.
(22:19):
He's gonna be a guy that will be one of
the highest, if not the highest paid tight end in football.
And you're just happy he's on your team and not
on someone else's.
Speaker 4 (22:28):
You know, it's hard to believe. He just completed a
season where he had more catches in a campaign and
by the way in sixteen games than Larry Fitzgerald ever did.
He had won eleven the most Larry ever had one
O nine. We know Larry. Next year when it comes
time for the Hall of Famous, middle name is going
to be first ballot. And that's our setup to flashback
to an episode of The Big Red Rage, end of
the twenty nineteen season, and you were talking about fits
(22:52):
and what he means to teammates.
Speaker 9 (22:53):
When you think of one of the best teammates we
ever played with, I think Larry Fitzgerald's there. He knows
everyone's kids' names, he knows what your dog's name is,
he knows what you had for breakfast, and it goes
down and it just goes to show you he takes
the time out to have a conversation me personally. I mean,
he helped me get trees for my house. Just landscaping needs.
Larry Fitzgerald does it all.
Speaker 4 (23:14):
How are those trees doing. How are the trees doing
in the backyard.
Speaker 8 (23:18):
They're actually doing great. And it's raining right now, which
is an anomaly in Arizona, so the trees are getting
a little water. I don't know if I call them
I Fitzgerald's trees, right so that's they're doing fit. The
two Fit brothers out alf front are doing great.
Speaker 1 (23:32):
So justin what do you miss the most right now?
If you are going to be retired, if you are
officially going to retire, what are you going to miss
the most about the game?
Speaker 8 (23:41):
Locker room? Well, I think I think you probably could
attest to that as well. When you're gone, you can
just walk back into the locker room and bs with
the guys and have jokes. And yeah, when I say
locker room, one of the things the most of the
locker room, and I'll missing I used to host O
line dinners every Thursday at my house, non negotiable. Everyone
came to them and we talked about anything other than football.
(24:02):
We would talk a little bit about practice, or we would,
you know, make fun of a coach that was giving
us a hard time, or maybe joke about a scheme.
But it was like, hey, let's talk about your family,
Let's talk about what you're passionate about. Let's get to
know one another. Because if you love playing with the
guys that you're with and there's that camaraderie and there's
that gel, you play harder and that's the difference when
(24:23):
they say, game of inches, It's like who's going to
stretch a little bit further, who is going to push
a little bit harder, Who's going to hold onto that block?
And if you love the guy you're playing next to
and your job impact that person's job, I'm gonna block
harder for DJ Humphries to make sure when we run
our duo, we run our double team blocks. Because I
know his daughter, I know his kids, I know his parents,
(24:46):
and my success is his success and vice versa. That's
what I'm gonna miss most about the game. That's what
I love the most about it. The competition is amazing.
I'll try to find them in other ways, but the
camaraderie is something that I'll miss the most.
Speaker 4 (25:00):
Success is just gonna keep following you and your post
playing days. Justin Man. We appreciate every single moment of
folks are wondering what he's been up to lately. Once again,
go to YouTube and just search Justin Pew and you'll
find it. Justin Pew attends every Thursday night football game
to find the NFL's best fans. It's a great series
and we appreciate the time. Thanks Justin.
Speaker 8 (25:18):
I appreciate a guy always fun talking to you guys.
Speaker 4 (25:21):
We'll continue brother with a big red rage presented by
santan Ford and Gilbert right after this.
Speaker 6 (25:34):
Oh love protein, so just always protein, man, It's the
number one thing. The more protein the better, So always
always more protein. Good little eighty grams here, so it
works great. I want to go to just like a
Stonemason and just be like you, just chopping me up
some natural rocks and just need a hundred pounder, one
(25:55):
hundred and fifty pounds, two hundred pounder and two and
fifty pounder and just put him outside his decorations. But
we all know what they're for, so to be super fun.
Just be the alpha on the street. Just carry on rocks.
Speaker 1 (26:08):
Sounds sick.
Speaker 4 (26:10):
That was part of a preseason press conference he held
during training camp. We had asked him about his home.
Speaker 1 (26:16):
Jim.
Speaker 4 (26:16):
He as in the garage, very proud of his home gym,
the Desert Viking yelled to Froholdt and officiato and enthusiast
of protein. As you heard right there. There are two
guys in this world I know of that actually own
their own Atlas stones. One would be yelled to frohold
Cardinals starting center the other would be your older brother,
Craig Wolfle, a former contestant in the World's Strongest Man competition,
(26:37):
Ron Wolfley.
Speaker 1 (26:37):
That's right, he's gonna go lift the Denny Stones over
in Scotland at some point.
Speaker 4 (26:42):
That's to what degree was yelled to Froholdt. Maybe not
to us necessarily our Cardinals fan, especially in his second
year as Cardinals starting center, but around the league you
think he's a you know, underrated, maybe under the radar
a little bit. Just how good he is, you know,
how solid he's been as a Cardinals starting.
Speaker 1 (27:00):
Yeah, I think that's a good take, Paully. By you,
I really do, yell Defroholt is a guy who does
not get an awful lot of accolade. Yet at the
same time, if you watch him play, man, he is
rock solid. He is really really good. I'm not saying
he's the best center in the National Football League, not
saying that, but man, he is a good center. You
(27:22):
go ahead and you watch him play. And the other
thing I love about him is not just his physicality
when you watch him play, but also it's his mentality.
I'm told PAULI that he rarely makes a mistake, rarely
as a mental.
Speaker 4 (27:35):
Error, and as the quarterback of the offensive line, I mean,
give us a quick job description for those folks who
maybe aren't familiar. There's a lot more than just snapping
the ball and hitting the nose tackle right.
Speaker 1 (27:46):
There's so much communication that goes on, and it really starts,
for the most part, with the center. There are some
offensive lines that have well established guards that will be
the guy that will also help a center or call
make the calls himself, as there are some guys who
actually do that, but for the most part, it's always
been the center. It's one of the prerequisites to playing
(28:09):
the position well. You have to be smart. Paul and
yell to Froholdt is definitely smart. He communicates as well,
and it's interesting because there are times where Yell de
Froholdt will actually tell Kyler Murray what kind of protection
to run.
Speaker 4 (28:24):
And we remember that one glorious year with Rodney Hudson,
how valuable he was as an all Pro caliber center
and just how critical that is to any quarterback. All Right, So,
the one constant in the off season in the NFL
for any team any year is change. And the Cardinals
saw Clayton Adams get a promotion get named the offensive
coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys. That's a feather in his
cap and Jonathan Gannon assembling that staff. So now Justin
(28:48):
Frye comes in new offensive line coach. Garnered quite a
reputation as one of the best in the game in
Ohio State. He was there for three years, including during
the tenure the career of Paris Johnson Junior. So what
do you make of a new on line coach in
that room?
Speaker 1 (29:03):
Wolf, Yeah, that's going to be really interesting to watch.
Can I just say quickly, Polly right now, just congratulations
of Clayton Adams.
Speaker 4 (29:10):
Yeah, no doubt, what.
Speaker 1 (29:11):
A big deal that is right there. Again, what a
feather in the cap for JG and his staff where
Clayton Adams is now an offensive coordinator, And you know what,
it's testament to the play of the offensive line for
the Arizona Cardinals. Once again last year. I know they
could have done better. I know they were banged up,
(29:32):
there's no doubt about that. But the Arizona Cardinals' ability
to run the ball garnered an awful lot of attention
for a guy like Clayton Adams. So I just want
to say that quickly Paully right off the top, and
right now, the offensive line room appears to be in
great hands with Justin Frye. And the reason why I
(29:52):
say that is because he has been the offensive line
coach for the Ohio State Buckeyes and now he's stepping
into the National Football League where Paris Johnson Junior is
going to be there, and who knows who else might
actually be there after the draft, pall, who knows? Is
it possible the arizond Cardinals identify Josh Simmons and say,
(30:14):
we're gonna go ahead and we're gonna draft this guy
because not only can he play tackle, he can play
guard as well. He's got position position versatility right now,
and you know how this team values that.
Speaker 4 (30:28):
Speaking of Ohio State, Paris Johnson there he was his
second year in the league, after he had a rookie
season or right tackle where he played every single offensive
snap as a rookie, came back as a franchise left
tackle this year. And here's Jonathan Gannon late in the
season on his second season by Paris.
Speaker 10 (30:45):
I thought he played well, you know, he switched positions.
You know, he keeps the quarterback up right and he
moves people in their und game, you know what I mean.
And he's smart and he's the character that you want.
And I think he's still as sending. I know he's
extremely motivated and disciplined and fired up to go into
this offseason. What he wants to work on and improve
(31:05):
that those aspects of his game that he wants to
take the next step. But very pleased where he's at,
and again I think that he's going to continue to improve.
Speaker 4 (31:14):
We heard Justin Peugh a little earlier in this show
talk about how the Cardinals have set at left tackle
for the next decade. That's that's his opinion. Where else
yeld A Froholtz starting center. Jonah Williams, he's on the
comeback trail. You figure, at least right now you have
him penciled in is your right tackle. He's under contract.
Let's talk about those two guard positions. Will Hernandez obviously
a premier name who's pending to be a free agent. Yeah,
(31:36):
and then Evan Brown he had a one year deal.
He started the entire season of left guard. So what
do you make of the interior line right now?
Speaker 1 (31:42):
Yeah, PAULI, you know, there's some very interesting things going
on right now once again, Will Hernandez. He's got to
recover from that ACL. I wonder if Will Hernandez might
be better served if you flip them over and let
him play left guard. Let him play on the left
side coming back. But boy, do I want to sign
Will Hernandez. I don't know about you, Bwi. I mean, boy,
(32:05):
if you could get him. You know, unfortunately for him,
his injury came at a very bad time for him
in terms of free agency and getting paid by somebody else.
But right now, that's something that I think will benefit
the Arizona Cardinals if they can sign Will Hernandez. You
know what, Paul, if there was one free agent signing
(32:26):
that I'd love to see Manti asen Ford here in
year three, year three. We know Mony's not big on
free agency. Ball, He's not. He's bigger on the draft
than he is free agency. Would you agree with that?
Speaker 4 (32:37):
Ball in facts as a kid saying yes.
Speaker 1 (32:39):
Okay, yes, So maybe a Trey Smith. Do you go
ahead and just say, you know what, Trey Smith, the
guard for the Kansas City Chiefs. We're gonna break the
bank on this one right here, if in fact he
is a free agent, because they have a franchise tag
as well. But Trey Smith, if he hits the market,
if we splurged on one position, that would be the
(33:01):
guide want.
Speaker 4 (33:02):
And there are like a half dozen free agent guards
who are gonna be out there. I was coming through
it the other day, so I'm guessing it's on the radar.
We'll see. If not, it's definitely feasible, possible, plausible. The
Cardinals at number sixteen overall, invest in a guard you
can plug and play for the next decade. I think
that would make a lot of sense.
Speaker 6 (33:23):
Wolf.
Speaker 4 (33:24):
Look, there's just a return to the run game period.
Speaker 1 (33:26):
You know.
Speaker 4 (33:26):
Go back to Clayton Adams. You know, if you're Dallas,
what did you fail to do last year? Among a
lot of things, but first and foremost on offense, you
couldn't run the ball. Indeed, look at the Cardinals last
two years, both year's top ten in rushing number two
each of the last two years in yards per carry. Yes,
so Clayton Adams is able to list that on his resume. Boom,
Dallas is really interested. Look at the Seattle Seahawks. They
(33:48):
just can Ryan Grubb after his first year, why they
finished twenty eighth in rushing. They bring in Clint Kubiak
and what's he talking about. We're gonna run Kenneth Walker,
We're gonna run Zach Charbonay. So it just seems to
be this trend in the league right now.
Speaker 1 (34:00):
Absolutely, Paul am with you on this listen. You know,
I talk about the pendulum all the time and the
way that it keeps swinging back more towards the middle,
being a lot more balanced the traditional schemes being run
with the new schemes right now. But once again, you
need three guards because you know one of them is
going to go down at some point in time, whether
it's just two weeks or two months, at some point
(34:23):
in time, guards will go down. Will Hernandez is one
of those guys right here. But I also wanted to
point out Isaiah Adams Dings PAULI. Isaiah Adams kind of
in a very quiet way, really asserted himself at the
end of last season and got a lot more reps,
got that experience and oh, by the way, look pretty
(34:45):
good doing it.
Speaker 4 (34:46):
And he got stronger during the year. He spends the
off season in the squad rack.
Speaker 1 (34:50):
Yes, he is your sleeper. You're right.
Speaker 4 (34:52):
We continue the big red rage, resented by santan Ford
and Gilbert Back.
Speaker 11 (34:56):
Right after this, it's a third and sixteen for the
Chiefs and the shotgunsnap.
Speaker 3 (35:06):
From their own twenty four rolling out of the pocket.
Mahomes wines rap.
Speaker 11 (35:09):
It's intercepting at the forty They picked up by the
gene that comes to the near side of the thirty.
Speaker 3 (35:13):
Got a back of the truning break to.
Speaker 11 (35:14):
Tackle the ten to five to the pylon touchdown.
Speaker 3 (35:20):
He goes at got brick six.
Speaker 11 (35:23):
A thirty seven yard pick six of Patrick Mahomes first
and ten. The shotguns snap that they hand up and
Hurt drops back five winds up whole launching.
Speaker 3 (35:34):
Pass down the middle gets caught over the shoulder in
the end time touchdown. Smith and thin Man make it insurmountable.
Speaker 1 (35:45):
It's over.
Speaker 4 (35:46):
The Philadelphia Eagles have won Super Bowl fifty nine.
Speaker 11 (35:51):
They have pat the Kansas City Chiefs forty to twenty two.
Speaker 3 (35:55):
It's their second Super Bowl win in seven years.
Speaker 1 (35:58):
What a game? Want to see?
Speaker 4 (36:00):
Won a team the greatest Eagles team in modern history?
Eagles fans savlets.
Speaker 3 (36:07):
And wait your choice.
Speaker 4 (36:10):
That is Merril Reese. Eagles Radio preseed by Kevin Harland
on Westwood One and America, thanks Eagles for putting a
stop to Kansas City's three p There is one downside, though,
if I may offer the following opinion, we're already hearing
the new moniker NFC beast as in the division, because
the NFC East, here's your stinking stat is the only
(36:31):
division where every team has won at least two Super
Bowl titles. No other division even has all four teams
winning even one super Bowl. Because you have five by Dallas,
four by the Giants, three by Washington, now two by Philly.
So that is far more than any other division combined.
Speaker 1 (36:48):
Well, I would say, Paul, if the shoe fits, wear it.
Speaker 4 (36:53):
So okay, let's talk takeaways, let's talk You know, the
NFL it's a copycat league. What is some of the
best practices you saw out of an Eagles team that
is young? They are loaded. Yes, they have some offseason questions,
there's no doubt about it, but they have a defense.
We gave a lot of love to Jalen Hurts and
Saquon Barkley deservedly so, but Wolf, how about an Eagles
(37:14):
defense six sacks, eleven quarterback hits, and sixteen quarterback pressures.
Speaker 1 (37:19):
Pauly, it's amazing. That's where you got to start when
you talk about Super Bowl fifty nine and what happened
in Super Bowl fifty nine, you have to start on
the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball.
Once again, it's so integral to the Philadelphia Eagles to
actually line up and run the ball. That's what they
do offensively, and they did that even though Saquon Barkley
was getting stuffed for the most part, it's longest run
(37:42):
in the game was ten yards. Twenty five carries for
fifty seven yards. They continued to run the ball. Now
they had a lead. Granted they had a lead, but
they continued to run the ball. And one of the
reasons why they were doing that is because Jalen Hurts
needs to be in that kind of offense right there.
And Jalen Hurts is always going to be the fulcrum
point of this game. To me, I said as much.
(38:04):
I talked about it on the radio often. He was
going to be the fulcrum bully, the tipping point as
to whether or not the Eagles were going to win
this game or not. If he went out there and
didn't protect the ball boy, it was going to be
a long day, I thought for the Philadelphia Eagles, but
Jalen Hurts went out there. Not only did he protect
the ball, I realized he threw a pick and it
(38:25):
wasn't a great pick, There's no doubt about that. But
Jalen Hurts was the difference in this game. He got
protection in the pocket. Pat Mahomes did not get protection.
Flip it over look at the line of scrimmage. A
four man rush against Pat Mahomes rush for drop seven,
the exact same formula that the New York Giants used
(38:48):
to beat Tom Brady. That's exactly what they did to
Pat Mahomes.
Speaker 4 (38:53):
Yeah, you want to beat those elite quarterbacks, beat them up,
and that's exactly what they did. And you know, if
you drill a little deeper in next gen stats, did
they said Philly played zone coverage and all but two
dropbacks their pressure rate exceeded Pat mahomes completion percentage in
the first half. Right, and then you're Justin Pugh, they
didn't blitz once across forty two dropbacks by Mahomes. Even
(39:16):
Justin Pugh said he's never seen that before. So it
just powys to the ability to get home.
Speaker 1 (39:22):
Yeah, well, Paully. What he was also talking about was
the fact that he's never seen a game where you
didn't bring five, right, five, which is pressure. I can't
call it a blitz. I can't do it, Paully. Six
to me or more, that was always a blitz to me.
You know what, where you can bring one more guy
than you've got offensive linemen, that to me is a blitz.
(39:45):
But bringing five has always been pressure. You just didn't
know which five were gonna come, but you knew they
were gonna bring five on a lot of third downs.
Not what the Eagles did. They lined up and rushed
four and drop seven. Man, it was incredible to see
the pressure they were able to get on Pat Mahomes. Paully,
(40:05):
have you ever seen Pat Mahomes rattled? Never? He looked
rattled to me.
Speaker 4 (40:11):
Absolutely, no doubt, no doubt. He didn't have any answers.
He was looking more at the pass rush than he
was downfielders receivers. You're absolutely right. And at the end
of the game Eagles were hoisting the Lombardi Jalen Hurts
had the Most Valuable Player trophy and here he is
after the game on his journey to the Super Bowl title.
Speaker 5 (40:28):
That same kid that went to national championship and lost
and went back and got benched and had to transfer
and had to go through this just unprecedented journey. And
that kid always kept the main thing, the main thing,
and I always was true to his vision and what
he saw.
Speaker 4 (40:46):
To me, it was his decision making as well. And
as I watched them, and Okay, this is going to
be a bit of a stretch, just because the Eagles
have such an elite defense and that was an absolute clinic,
but they reminded me of the formula, the way they
were playing and the way they were beating Kansas City,
the way the Cardinals were playing leading up to the bye. Yeah,
(41:08):
only three interceptions by Kyler in those ten games. Cardinals
were six and four. They were a top five run team.
They were playing good enough defense to stay in every
single game virtually. There are a couple exceptions Washington for example. Yes,
but to me, and then all of a sudden, something
changed after the buye for the Cardinals, namely the turnovers
and the two games where they won the turnover battle,
(41:28):
guess what, they won the game. The other five they
did not, and they lost.
Speaker 1 (41:31):
And Paulie not only that too, the Philadelphia Eagles. Did
they have a dual threat quarterback? Yep, they had a
dual thread quarterback Jalen Hurts. Eleven carries for seventy two
yards in the Super Bowl and a touchdown. How many
times you saw Jalen Hurts pull the ball down and
convert with his legs? That that, to me was something
(41:53):
that I thought was similar as well. The offensive line
for the Eagles very very physical in this games. They
used to run the ball, very physical, very the same
thing is what the Arizona Cardinals had before that offensive
line lost Will Hernandez. That was a very very physical
front as well. And I think Paula going forward, it's
(42:16):
only going to get more physical for the Arizona Cardinals.
That offensive line is only going to get even more
physical and bigger at the point of attack. We'll see
where that leads.
Speaker 4 (42:27):
I'm going to shout out real quick the two rookie
corners Quinnan Mitchell and Cooper de jen and he obviously
could have been a candidate for Super Bowl MVP. Think
about early in round two of the draft last year,
Wolf at number forty, Cooper de Jan forty one, kool
Aid McKinstry forty two, Kamari Laster had a great year
for Houston, then Max Melton forty three. If I'm Max
(42:48):
Melton and I'm watching those two Eagles rookie corners, that
is fueled the fire of this offseason. That is my motivation.
And you know what, I thought Max Melton played really
well in December and January. I thought he was an
ascending rookie at the end of last season.
Speaker 1 (43:00):
No, that's a good observation by you, Paul right there.
And also too, you saw how much zone they were
playing with Vic Fangio as well. Well, you know what,
the Arizona Cardinals are no stranger to zone coverage as well.
And you got to find those guys that actually play
well in his zone room. And the Cardinals have some
really really good young corners that are developing right now.
(43:23):
And not only that too, but Garrett Williams, who you
can actually move around. He can play the nickel, he
can play outside, he can play safety, and did play safety,
and a lot of cover two deep looks there was
Garrett Williams. So it's going to be really interesting to
see what the Cardinals doing. What Monti assen Fort focuses
on during the draft, And.
Speaker 4 (43:45):
How much better are the Cardinals corners if they get
this sort of pass rush that the Eagles corners enjoyed
right this year behind that Eagles run. And I bring
that up because we mentioned the NFL combine three hundred
and twenty nine players invited. Did you see the suite
from Daniel Jeremiah, NFL network analyst where he put out
just a couple of days ago. Quote last year, at
this time, I had potential starter grades on twelve incoming
(44:08):
defensive tackles. This year, I have twenty four starting grades.
Speaker 1 (44:12):
Oh, I didn't see that, Paul oh Man.
Speaker 4 (44:15):
He said, there's quote sick, a ridiculous amount of depth
at the D line position in this draft class. So
when you see the latest mock draft they came out
today in NFL dot Com, and there's five a day
every day, I get it. But they have the Cardinals
trading down from sixteen to twenty two, getting an extra
round three and round four pick, and then taking Michigan
defensive tackle Kenneth Grant. Okay, I could see that. I mean,
(44:38):
MANI has a reputation of trading down maximizing picks. I
could see that.
Speaker 1 (44:42):
Well, little advice of the guys that are going to
the combine if they take in a room right there
and they got two doors in a room and they
tell you, well, you know what's stripped down to your
jock boys wealth. Just do it. Everything's gonna be fine.
Trust me on that.
Speaker 4 (44:55):
