Here's Paul CALVICI. I'm ready. I'm one hundred percent ready.
I'm telling you I'm ready. And Ron Wolfley, it doesn't
get any better than that right here, right now, in
real time, Ron Wolfley, do we have live Thursday Night
Football as we speak? We do, Paully, Am I talking
(01:13):
about the Hall of Fame game? No, we are talking
about the original Thursday Night Football. Wait for it. The
Big Red Rage Live from Cardinals Camp soon to feature
tight end tip Riman all presented by santan Ford and Gilbert.
We are santan Ford. And by the way, speaking of Thursdays,
as someone tweeted out, our long national nightmare is over
(01:37):
because the next Thursday without football January fifteenth, twenty twenty six.
Speaker 1 (01:45):
All right, Rondo, applause with that ball.
Speaker 4 (01:47):
That's more than a golf clap. You're right, yeah, it's
well done. All right, Paul calvic here, Ron Wolfy.
Speaker 1 (01:51):
There, PAULI, how you doing? You jacked up? You're fired
up because there is a football game going on right now.
I love the fact that those two teams, specifically the
Line and the Chargers big time culture, and that culture
is about physicality.
Speaker 4 (02:04):
That's true. That's true. If this team could resemble another
team's culture, the Lions and Chargers would be in that group.
There's no doubt about it. Yes, Although as for the
game itself, nothing says July NFL action like a Trey
Lance touchdown pass, which is what we saw to start
the scoring.
Speaker 1 (02:20):
So enough with that.
Speaker 4 (02:22):
Once again, we have real happenings here at Cardinals camp.
In fact, wolf wait for it, not one two days
in a row in pads, not once, but twice this
week you had Monday, Tuesday, soon to be Friday Saturday.
Let's call it the more friction update desk and listen
to your head coach Jonathan Gannon. Just talk about consecutive
(02:45):
days in pads.
Speaker 1 (02:47):
I like that.
Speaker 5 (02:47):
There are some sore soldiers.
Speaker 1 (02:50):
You know.
Speaker 5 (02:50):
That's a lot of banging within twenty four hours twice,
you know, but it's needed. We got to get calloused.
We needed some perturbation, as I would call it, some friction.
But we'll be smart and we'll adapt as we get going.
But I thought they did a really good job. And
what I'm grateful to the locker room is they practice
the right way and they protect their teammates. So it
is very physical, it is very violent, but we're practicing
(03:14):
the way that we need to to protect our teammates,
which is good.
Speaker 4 (03:17):
Do you believe in football shape. There's been in shape
and then there's football shape.
Speaker 1 (03:22):
There's no doubt about it, Paul. Of course, I do
believe that the human body callouses itself. That it does
that the more work you give it, the more contact
you give it, it does become very very calloused to
that kind of contact. And I'm wondering if that's what
jag was talking about when he was talking about friction,
(03:42):
We're just going to put the pads on more. We're
going to have more padded practices. I don't know, but
I do know this, PAULI. There are a couple of
people that are standing out right now, A couple of people,
a couple of elements to a football team that are
standing out right now. I don't know about you, but
early on, Marvin Harrison Junior has impressed me.
Speaker 4 (04:00):
I don't know about you, PAULI absolutely, but drill down
a little deeper, because I think everybody's now in the
edge of their seat. How where Why is he impressing you?
Speaker 1 (04:09):
Well, first of all, I've seen Marvin Harrison Junior right
now make more contested catches at this part of camp
than I saw all of last trading camp. Ding and
and Paullie. By the way, I've asked many people that
question as well. Have you noticed the same thing? Why
I get the same answer back? Your ding is what
I get back. That, to me is exactly what this
(04:31):
football team needs going forward. Marvin Harrison Junior to be
more aggressive, to use the mentality that he has to
that ball is mine and go get it. I've talked
about this. I talked about it all of last year, PAULI,
for the most part, Game three or Game four, I
was talking to you about Marvin Harrison Junior needing to
get more aggressive when that ball is in the air.
(04:53):
I have seen that so far early in training camp.
And I also have seen a little bit of chemistry,
a little simmer, if you will, between Kyler and Marvin
Harrison Junior. And that's gotta happen. It's got to turn
into a boil come September. But I see the simmer
right now.
Speaker 4 (05:09):
Any other names that have stood out, I'll go, how
about Mac Wilson Senior. You're thinking, Okay, it's gonna be
a transition to Mike linebacker. I mean, so far, so good.
It looks seamless. He looks regular season ready based on
the plays he's making. A mayor may not have had
a conversation with Mac Wilson Senior about his new and
improved D line and just how clean that D line
(05:31):
is keeping the inside linebackers. TikTok. There's that. There's Trey McBride.
He absolutely looks ready to play a game tomorrow if
he had to.
Speaker 1 (05:39):
Okay, Paully I'm just gonna jump on what you just
said right there. The defensive front is my second takeaway
right now. The defensive front is winning early in training camp,
right now now, Paully, once again, the defense typically is
ahead of the offense. They are early on, and it
makes a lot of sense as to why the offense
is acting. They have to act. The defense reacts, okay,
(06:02):
but when you have to act, that means you have
to execute, and that means you need all eleven guys
to execute and win in order for the play to
typically work. So that becomes a little problematic when you're
early in the training camp, early in the process of
(06:23):
being a team. I've seen the defense hammer the offense
and a couple of the padded practices. That front and
that defensive line is balling.
Speaker 4 (06:34):
And as we hinted here on the big red ration
not long after the mandatory mini camp, the defense had
its way most of mini camp with the offense. That's
the way interesting, that's the way things started here at
Cardinals camp bat Kyler Murray. The bad news was he
had to meet the media after the offense definitely lost
that day. Good news is they remounted even better news
for Kyler Murray is that he has a new and
(06:54):
improved right guard. His name is Isaiah Adams. And I
asked the head coach earlier today what is seen out
of the second year third round pick through two padded
practices JG.
Speaker 5 (07:05):
Isaiah had a hell of a day, had a hell
of a week last week. Honestly, he probably won the
day on whatever our last day was. Truthfully, in my mind,
he was the all star of the day. I thought
just through team periods, through one on one through individual
played extremely well.
Speaker 4 (07:20):
And look, the defensive line has dominated at times, but
Isaiah Adams has not been losing in one on ones. No,
He's gone against Koalais, He's gone against Daris Robinson. He
has more than held his own.
Speaker 1 (07:31):
By the way, Paul was he losing last year from
time to.
Speaker 4 (07:34):
Time, Yes, last and some of the bull rushes he
would lose. Yes, And that's why he spent the off
season in the squad rack and deadlifting.
Speaker 1 (07:41):
Essentially, it is unbelievable to see Isaiah and how much
better he is right now. Let me also say this
quickly and in regard to my takeaways, twelve personnel is
going to be an absolute mother for the Arizona Cardinals.
When you have Tip Ryman and you have Trey McBride,
and you can go and run down situation first and
(08:02):
ten second and one to six, and you can run
twelve personnel out there, and Paulie, you can hammer the
ball if you want to. You can do that, or
you can actually throw the ball as if you had
eleven personnel out on the field. Why do I say that,
Because Trey McBride is that good of a receiver. Trey
McBride is that talented, especially once he gets the ball
(08:25):
into his hands. You could split him out, flex him
out into the middle of the slot like he was
a number three wide receiver, and let him run routes.
What are you gonna do If you're a defensive coordinator,
you're gonna sit there and look at twelve personnel and
you're gonna go, man, we need to give me a
big back. We need a linebacker in there. They're gonna
run the ball. Get a backer in there, they're gonna
(08:45):
bring that back around and then all of a sudden,
Kyler Murray's gonna go, you know what, Let's check with
me this thing. Let's go ahead and throw this. We'll
make that backer actually cover. How about that? Oh no,
we're gonna put a dB in there. We're gonna put
a safety in there. Oh yeah, that's you're going to
do in first and ten. Great, We're gonna run the
ball to James Connor and we'll run it right at
your safety. See this is with twelve personnel. The danger
(09:09):
of this for the Arizona Cardinals is for the defense,
not for them. It is an awesome thing.
Speaker 4 (09:17):
We're gonna hear from Buddha Baker a little later. He
was talking about the versatility, the positional flexibility of the defense.
Right now, all the different guys playing next to Mack
Wilson Senior, including even Zavian Collins. Interesting about that. Hey,
join the Bird Gang in Dallas Monday Night Football through

All Big ten guy. He hails from South Dakota. He's
a new dad. He's an expert of the pottery wheel.
(10:00):
He just went to tight end you. He's more interesting
than Kelsey or Kittle. Tip Ryman next.
Speaker 3 (10:14):
Drops back, dep throws far aside on a short pass
caught by Ryman, bounces off at a fender at the
forty two, and then shoved out a bounds at the
forty two. Tip Ryman's first NFL catch. The Cardinals run
bends the left side. He's got some root with the
thirty five up past the forty forty five.
Speaker 1 (10:31):
Oh what a great block by tip Ryman on the
back side as well. Oh, you can still hear the
screaming of the lad Are you kidding me? Light up
and suck the metaphorical beating heart right out of the Jets,
run it right down their throat. Oh my goodness, that
(10:52):
was a great job right there. Tip Ryman at the
point of attack just jacked up Aiden Hutchinson, put him
on wheel and buried them.
Speaker 6 (11:02):
Wow.
Speaker 4 (11:06):
Yeah, cram that vertical as the intensity level just went
way up here on the Big Red Rage presented by
Santan Ford in Gilbert Big eighty seven is in the house.
He is in the booth here at Cardinals camp. And
uh well, let's just say you're known for a lot
of things. Yeah, okay, intensity is one of them, no doubt.
(11:26):
Bad nicknames would be another. They're not bad, they're great, Paul.
I mean, look out this window right now. There are
names in the Ring of honor, guys who still won't
talk to you. Larry Fitzgerald, Adrian Wilson, Carson Palmer, you
know so. But I have a nickname. Yes, I'm gonna
go out on the limbit for Tip Ryman here to
four and henceforth? Who wants some?
Speaker 1 (11:48):
Who wants some? Who wants some? Paul? It's just so long?
Are you kidding me? Hey, you're calling him across the
locker room? Hey, who wants some? I mean, no, pay
it just it's too long.
Speaker 4 (11:59):
Maybe we'll call it end screen that you know. I'm
gonna tell Drew Patsy and you know, tight end screen
who wants some? Featuring Tip rymean? Tip?
Speaker 1 (12:06):
Were doing good? Thanks you guys. I'm glad. Okay, I've
just said Paul right now, you know what I'm gonna
come with right off the top. Okay, okay, what's your
weight at to seventy five? Yeah? Normal, okay normal. Last
year though I thought you were a little heavier. I
thought you were near to eighty. Yes.
Speaker 6 (12:24):
Last year was last year. My way was seventy five
to eighty okay, and then this year it's seventy two
to seventy seven. So okay, same kind of float, in
the same range.
Speaker 4 (12:34):
Really so, so that's because there's more tight end screens
in your future, right, you gotta be a little more
fleet of foot.
Speaker 1 (12:39):
Yeah, that's right, that's right.
Speaker 6 (12:40):
Yeah, someone give you the play.
Speaker 1 (12:42):
But yeah, so tip, how was your summer? Your summer?
Did you get a little downtime, did you get away? Yes?
Speaker 6 (12:49):
Yeah, so summer was really good. Week after Mini camp,
back up to South Dakota, some family time. There's new
babies in the family, so we got family photos. That's right,
the whole night.
Speaker 1 (13:00):
Yes, sir, yes, sir.
Speaker 7 (13:01):
In his congratulations his name is Brooks, Brooks, Yes, yes,
got some yeah, got a middle name, yes, Jackson, same
as me.
Speaker 1 (13:13):
Very cool man.
Speaker 6 (13:15):
It's been good.
Speaker 3 (13:16):
Then.
Speaker 4 (13:16):
The second biggest highlight of your off season was tight
end you Yeah, and see Taylor Swift right, did you
see Taylor Swift?
Speaker 6 (13:23):
I think from Afar maybe, but no, that was not
a that was not included in the highlight as far
as my memory goes.
Speaker 4 (13:30):
What was tight end you all about? It is the
first time or what stood out the most?
Speaker 6 (13:34):
There's a lot of camaraderie and it was cool as
far as like you think about a lot of different
position groups in the NFL or in football in general
and across the league. Team to team, guys are buddy
buddy with each other and there's a lot of camaraderie
going around and I just don't know that any other
position group is quite like that, right, So everyone is
(13:54):
rooting for themselves. If one tight end wins, if one
gets paid, the rest of us win, you know. And
so it brings good, good group mentality and good camaraderie
to the position group itself within the NFL, but just
football as a whole, honestly.
Speaker 1 (14:10):
Okay, So Tip, you're one, I want you to compare
and contrast year one to year two and how you're
feeling mentally right now from year one and what you
did going into year two.
Speaker 6 (14:24):
Really good question. I mean, so you're one OTAs to
through midway through training camp like we are right now
versus the same timeline this year. As far as confidence goes,
that's up. That's up a lot. And when you're confident,
you know, you play free, you play better, you I
know the offense way more. And so it's like I'm
(14:44):
not thinking of every single little thing. I'm able to
kind of flow a little bit more, which is, you know,
you let your best self out when you're not thinking.
It's paralysis by analysis is real. So a lot less
of that and a lot more just playing free.
Speaker 4 (15:00):
If a rookie today came up and said, all right,
what's the biggest thing I need to know about the league?
In seventeen regular season games, what would you tell them?
What did you learn in terms of just an entire
season in the NFL.
Speaker 6 (15:12):
Now, this varies for everybody, but for me, it's about
the process, and it was about the mental process and
the physical process every single day of like parceling out
your days and what that process is to get you
ready for.
Speaker 1 (15:25):
A game day.
Speaker 6 (15:26):
And you know this well, but how you get yourself
back from getting in multiple car crashes on Sunday, right
and then getting your body back and making sure all
the while because I mean seventeen eighteen weeks. That's a
long long time to be trying to peak, if you will.
So getting your body to stay strong, to keep weight on,
(15:49):
to be able to move people and hit hard and
have the body armor as well, that's a process, and
so you have to be dialed in. And so for me,
it's about the day to day and understanding how these
little little things that just I'm laying brick by brick
by brick, and over eighteen you know, with preseason included
(16:10):
what twenty three weeks or something, these add up to
big parcels. And so just understanding like where you want
to get your edge within the week, to get yourself
ready to go for Sunday every single week and let
that add up over time.
Speaker 1 (16:23):
Yeah, that is Ah, that is so cool. Well done
by you. That's a creative approach. Let me just ask
you in twenty twenty five, right now, where are your
thoughts in terms of where do I want to get better?
Speaker 6 (16:36):
So a big emphasis for me was my feet and
my hands as far as consistency of them being placed.
And like last year, let's say pass pro and run
blocking as far as all the blocking components go, my
hands will get a little inconsistent at times, and so
that's been a big emphasis for me to strike and
(16:58):
not to you know, wrap around, and it looks silly
too when I do that, so it's better. I usually
win more when I strike. I'm trying to do that
and consistent with my feet and my especially my second step.
My second step gets a little long sometimes. So I've
been really emphasizing one two quick in the ground before contact,
(17:19):
and then you know, driving on contact. And then a
big one was pass pro, being like an extra tackle
out there on pass pro. And so that's a lot
of stuff that I've been working on and I've seen dividends,
you know, with with those those areas that I've emphasized.
Speaker 4 (17:35):
So I'm grateful for that, you know. Paris Johnson Junior
were on board with Tip Ryman. By the way Cardinals
tight end his rookie year. He went against Miles Garrett,
Micah Parsons. He went against Nick Bosa, Aaron Donald twice.
Just crazy, right, Who were a couple of dudes you
went against last year? Just name a couple of names.
Speaker 6 (17:54):
Yeah, I mean, Nick Bosa was He's just he moves
different than a lot of them. Aiden Hutchinson was really good.
I was gonna. I was really excited for Khalil Mack,
but I didn't get to block him that much. There
weren't many things where I was lined up across from him.
But my first game was actually against von Miller and
(18:14):
aj Panessa at the Buffalo Bills, and so that was,
you know, a long time thing. Because South Dakotins, I
mean they watch either Vikings or Broncos. So a lot
of people growing up they watched the Broncos and that
happened to be the time when von Miller was there,
and so I grew up watching him, and so to
see him across the line, I was like, oh man,
(18:34):
we're here. It is It was an eye opening moment,
you know.
Speaker 1 (18:39):
So for me, Tip, I am really excited about run
down situation. First in ten second, one to six twelve
personnel by the Arizona Cardinals, whole personnel with Trey McBride
and Tip Ryman as the two tight ends that are in.
Why is that so difficult? Why does that make it
so difficul called for defenses. When I say twelve personnel
(19:03):
with Tip Ryman and Trey McBride in rundown situation.
Speaker 6 (19:07):
I mean because we can it's an obvious rundown situation,
but both Trey and I are very capable in the
past game hit him with a keeper, you know, and
make it look like a run anything like that, or
it's just versatility is the answer, right, because he's he's
incredible as far as his athleticism, his catch radius, all
the things. And I believe so as myself too. But
(19:29):
being a really powerful blocker, that that makes it a
you know, a threat to be reckoned with in the
run game too. So he's hitting beside the court seeing
there there you go to me, this is why I
love this twelve personnel. Are you kidding me?
Speaker 1 (19:43):
Yeah? Told me you want to run the ball. I
think I got two tight ends on the field pauleague
that can block very very well and do the job,
get it done. And now all of a sudden, I've
got two tight ends on the field as well. Eleven
personnel is one back, one tight end, three wide. Well
you know what, Trainment Bride is pretty much wide receiver capable. Yes,
(20:05):
I mean he could be a guy that could play
wide receiver and run some wide receiver routes. Yeah, and
he does. And because of that, it could be twelve
or eleven based on how the defensive coordinator is going
to look at that personnel.
Speaker 6 (20:19):
You bet you bet even thirteen shoot three tight ends,
one running back. I mean with Higgy, we've got a
good group there. Yeah, he can just spread it out,
do all the things. So it's we're confident as a
tight end room, you know what I mean?
Speaker 4 (20:32):
How about when it's you and Trey and then Marvin
Harrison Junior comes into the huddle. Is that thirteen personnel
with the.
Speaker 6 (20:38):
Weight he put on that's supposed to crossover?
Speaker 4 (20:43):
Some of the guys have been joking. Then when he
enters a huddle, it's an extra tight end. So there
you go.
Speaker 1 (20:47):
That's pretty good.
Speaker 4 (20:47):
Yeah, I think he was two twenty right, big boy? Yeah,
how much is this offense? How much do you feed
off James Connor? Because JG likes to say he's not
just a player, he's a mindset. He's a mentality. So
when you guys are running the ball and he's fired
up and he's trucking dudes and breaking tackles and he's
among the league leaders in that, I mean, what is
that like in the huddling on the field.
Speaker 6 (21:09):
You know, Jase's got this look about him, and he's, uh,
he's got this persona, this aura and uh and when
he especially when he gets fired up, and that usually
happens against the forty nine ers, right, and he he
gets this, he gets his mode and you can see
it in his eyes. And that's a dude is like
you know, you know, if he's fighting tooth and nail, like,
(21:30):
I'm gonna fight right alongside him, you know what I mean.
That's someone I would go in the dark alley with.
So so when you have that and a teammate, it
makes it all the more exciting to go in the
dark alley, you know, wherever it doesn't it doesn't matter, right,
So it's exciting and it's encouraging when you get in
those situations and especially when you see that look right,
no doubt tip you know, following.
Speaker 1 (21:52):
Up on what Paully asks you in regard to the offense,
right now, where do you think this offense needs to
take the next step?
Speaker 4 (22:00):
Oh? Man, that's a good question.
Speaker 6 (22:01):
I don't even know if I don't even know if
I have an answer to that.
Speaker 4 (22:05):
Okay, yeah, so.
Speaker 1 (22:07):
You think you got here. You're expecting this offense to
be good in all phases, all areas.
Speaker 6 (22:12):
Yeah, I mean preseason, every single team everywhere in the country. Right,
we all think we're gonna be good in every area.
But so we'll see when we cut the tape on
after Sundays. But you know, there's always room to improve.
So the answer is not like nowhere. The answer is
everywhere because we always can get better. But nothing jumps
(22:33):
off the page, you know what I mean.
Speaker 4 (22:34):
Yeah, I'll name a name that JG said earlier today,
and it's a guy that Tip Ryman knows better than
anyone on this team. Isaiah Adams. Yeah, he said. Isaiah
Adams was quote the All Star the two padded practices.
What have you seen last year versus this year? We
had Isaiah Adams on a couple of months ago and
he said he's up to nearly three twenty five. I
mean he does look stronger, and I mean he was
(22:56):
really against that D line. He was doing really well
on O line. D line.
Speaker 6 (23:00):
Yeah, no, he I mean a huge thing with with
Zay since I've known him, is if coaches are confident
in him and he's confident in himself, the dudes, the
dude's hard to stop and it's hard to get by
him as a d Lineman, right, So, uh, seeing his
confidence year one, a year two, and that's something we
talk about a lot that we both are feeling huge
(23:20):
again again with the playing free because you're confident and
then when you play free, you play better and stronger
and faster, and you hit harder and all the stuff.
Seeing Zay do that, uh, it's a it's a testament
to that confidence and playing free.
Speaker 4 (23:34):
All right. So Paully pencil Neck, I look out there
and I see Kolais and Dalvin Thomlinson or Josh Sweat right,
and a new and approved Darius Robinson, and here comes
Walter Nolan. And how much better is this defensive front
gonna be this year for the Cardinals defense? I mean,
when when teams see what your defensive front looks like,
it's gonna be night and day from last year, isn't it?
Speaker 1 (23:54):
I don't know.
Speaker 6 (23:54):
I will have to see it's gonna be on game day, right,
because I can't I can't speak for it. But shoot,
we're all in the NFL, right last year and this year.
Everybody's super talented. But but I'm expecting I'm expecting greatness
from our team, you know, and from myself and everybody
and everybody on board.
Speaker 1 (24:14):
Last question for me right here, Trey McBride, What have
you learned from Trey McBride.
Speaker 6 (24:19):
He's given me a lot of a lot of tips
and tricks, I mean even run game when I first
got here, and you know, helping me out seeing defenses,
seeing fronts differently and how we and our offense kind
of like to attack certain things and different nuances. He
was really helpful in that. And then you know, as
the as we go into year two and stuff, he's
(24:41):
been really helpful in my expanding knowledge continually of defensive
secondaries and just again nuances and different things as far
as that goes. So it's kind of shifted from when
I first got here kind of what he saw, you know,
because my deal was like really just run game. And
so now I'm kind of expanding more and I'm learning
(25:01):
more from him asking questions and I kind of see.
I can also see because my eyes are opened a
little bit, right, I know a little bit more so
I can hask O, what'd you see there?
Speaker 1 (25:09):
Why'd you do that?
Speaker 6 (25:09):
Because I maybe I did, wouldn't have noticed it last year,
but I noticed it this year. So he's been really
helpful as far as uh, as far as all the
nuances and how to attack certain things and what we
do as an offense here. Uh, that's that's particular. So
he's been a really good resource for me.
Speaker 4 (25:26):
Tip. We always enjoy it. Uh. If fans go to
Cardinals Bird watch the TV show or social media, there's
a segment there spirit animals, a right, players name their
spirit animals. Tip went with raccoon. So so uh, yeah,
all the fans go out there and Tip explains it
a little bit on camera. So we'll get into that.
We'll leave that maybe for next time.
Speaker 1 (25:46):
Yeah, all right, ye, thank you, appreciate it. Thank you,
thank you.
Speaker 4 (25:50):
We continue with a big red rage presented by santan
Ford and Gilbert.
Speaker 3 (25:53):
Right after this, looks over the middle throws knocked down
by Baker and complain.
Speaker 4 (26:05):
Kittle was the intendant receiver.
Speaker 1 (26:07):
And Baker broke up the past.
Speaker 4 (26:09):
Talk about your hand on it, Yes, footballs A couple
of familiar voices, yes, Buddha, Baker, the all pro Darren
Urban longtime Cardinals written Azycardinals dot Com and Buddha. You know,
(26:35):
I mean, it's all about the detail, especially on the
print side. You got to get it right and so
Buddha was quick to specify foot balls and so, yeah,
I thought the biggest media blooper in camp was this mustache.
But I think Deren just went to the top of
the power pole. What's your old saying wolf, Sometimes you're
the shish and sometimes you're the Kabab. I think Darren, well,
which would he be? Which what he'd be? The kabab? Right?
Speaker 1 (26:57):
And yeah, you want to be there and not the gabal? Okay.
Speaker 4 (27:02):
So originally we had Josh Sweat and Dalvin Thomas in
a highlight montage in there, but that was replaced for
obvious reasons right there, entertainment value. Thank you Darren for
taking one for the team. It is the Big Red
Rage presented by Santan Forward and Gilbert Special thanks to
Tip Ryman, who is excellent.
Speaker 1 (27:17):
By the way.
Speaker 4 (27:17):
I mean, you talk about precocious as a second year
tight end, are you kidding me? He's two seventy five
who wants some Indeed, he says he's playing with confidence,
and he talked about, you know, the hands and the
feet and the footwork, and I mean he he is
going to be a mauling machine this year.
Speaker 1 (27:34):
Yeah. The one the one thing we continue to see, Paul,
are big jumps from guys that are rookies to year two.
Big jumps that doesn't happen by accident, Paul. That's Manti
ausin Fort and his staff and JG drafting guys that
they think are built that way mentally where they will
make that.
Speaker 4 (27:54):
Big jump from year two and by the way, real
year one, real quick. Marvin Harrison junior. Okay, talk Darius
Robinson looks ridiculous. But but what about Trey Benson. Is
there not a buzz in that sideline?
Speaker 1 (28:08):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (28:08):
There is about Trey Benson last year to this year.
Speaker 1 (28:11):
Yeah, there's no doubt about it. Trey Benson. There's a
big buzz with him and what he could possibly bring
to James Connor in his game and how that will
help the Arizona Cardinals offense.
Speaker 4 (28:21):
So doubt. All right, So Buddha, thank you with that one.
By the way, I'm still standing by my NFL Defensive
Player of the Year prediction. You know why because if
this front seven is bawling out and keeping Buddha clean
and he's the Troy Polamalo of box safeties, I mean,
you think he had a career year last year, what
do you see what happens this year, especially when you
(28:43):
get guys like Josh Sweat, who, by the way, gave
Paris Johnson Junior all he could handle. And the one
on ones.
Speaker 1 (28:48):
Yeah, I mean, let's just put it this way.
Speaker 4 (28:51):
Josh Sweat definitely won one and then Paris won one.
And here's Josh Whatt just on the new guys in
that front seven and the defense in general forming a bond.
Speaker 8 (29:00):
Shoot, we all coming together. That message hasn't changed since
how you know, since I left. But it's just connect
with each other. You know what I'm saying. We all
care about each other and we're gonna do it for
one another.
Speaker 1 (29:11):
Yeah, you know what, PAULI, I really do believe this
could be a career best for Josh Sweat this year,
the year twenty twenty five. The reason why I say that, Pauli,
you know, eleven sacks, that's his career best so far
in twenty twenty two. But when you play for the
Philadelphia Eagles, quarterbacks get rid of the ball. Now they
(29:32):
know what kind of pass rush the Philadelphia Eagles have. Boy,
they're telling that offensive coordinator is telling that quarterback all
week long, man, get rid of that ball. Get rid
of that ball. They've got an excellent pass rush, right,
It's not going to be like that for the Arizona Cardinals.
It's not gonna be like that. Do I believe we're
gonna have a much better pass rush than what we've
seen without a shadow of a doubt, and Josh Sweat
(29:55):
is going to play a big part of that. But
it's not gonna be like that Eagles front four. So
for me, even though Josh is respected across the league,
he's not also gonna get the same respect in regard
that a Nick Bosa or Miles Garrett would get. Where
an offensive coordinator comes into the meeting on Monday and says,
(30:16):
the number one thing we have to do is block
this guy. Not at first, he's not gonna get that.
They're gonna take a prove it mentality, Josh Sweat. Prove
it mentality, Arizona Cardinals. You have the kind of pass
rush where you can rush four, drop seven. You're gonna
have to prove that to us, and the Cardinals are
(30:37):
going to be given that opportunity. I love Josh Sweat
taking advantage of that opportunity that's going to be in
front of him, because they will single him up on
the outside. They will They won't go ahead and put
a tight end always over there or chip block him
because right now he's got to earn that Trey Hendrickson
(30:58):
type of respect.
Speaker 4 (31:01):
Yeah, and then think about Trey Hendrickson. He had nearly
fifty percent of the Bengals sacks last year. That's not
even close on the Eagles. There's so many mouths defeat.
There's so many pass rushers on the Eagles. They're they're
taking they're bringing guys in and out let me And
we know Nick Ross and JG love to bring defensive
linemen in in waves, right, and they rotate guys in
and out. Do you think Josh Sweat, though, will be
(31:22):
more will get more reps with the Cardinals and will
be on the field longer than he was with the
Eagles because we know their tendency to always swap guys
out with the Cardinals.
Speaker 1 (31:32):
Yeah, you know, that's a great question, Baly, It really is,
because you know what does Josh Sweat think about that?
Speaker 4 (31:41):
You know that he's the premier free agent signing.
Speaker 1 (31:44):
JG talks about him all the time, being able to
set the edge and run down situation. How good of
an edge. He is at setting that.
Speaker 4 (31:52):
And he's a big dude. He is every bit.
Speaker 1 (31:56):
Is Paully. So again I think, yeah, he's going to
get the opper tunery to be out there on the
field where he'll get those rops.
Speaker 4 (32:03):
All right, speaking of big dudes, that's our segue too.
Dalvin Tomlinson remember this time, and we could go in
the big red Ragers said there's no way he's three
twenty five. The very next day they updated some of
the weights. They now listen to three thirty five. Mike
Shod I not tell you that, Paul I told you.
Speaker 1 (32:19):
Yeah, in I'm still kind of thinking of about that.
Speaker 4 (32:22):
Okay, a little light we'll see. But uh, here's the
GM on the Dave Pash podcast. Mani Asiforna what Dalvin
Thomson brings to the az D.
Speaker 9 (32:31):
The first thing that sticks out about Dalvin is just
the sheer size of him. I mean, he it's hard
for him to fit in a doorway. He's just so
big and long and wide, and so you know, I
think Dalvin's ability to eat up space, to take on block,
to defeat blocks, to find the ball, it really opens
up opportunities. Now Dalvin's gonna make his share of plays too,
There's no question about that. But he does a lot
(32:51):
of the dirty work that sometimes doesn't show up in
the you know, in the highlights and the box score.
But I know those guys that are playing around, I'm
sure appreciate what he does for the defense.
Speaker 4 (33:00):
Hey, ask Miles Garrett if he's going to miss Dalvin Tomlinson. Yeah,
in Cleveland. Dalvin Thomason had a career year in a
few ways last year, including eighteen quarterback hits. So, I mean,
he's an absolute stud against the run, but a lot
of guys consider him underrated in penetration, getting into the backfield, TFLs,
hitting the quarterback, harassing the quarterback, and so far he's
(33:22):
given every single Cardinals old lineman everything they can handle.
Speaker 1 (33:25):
One of them. Yeah, you know, PAULI just I was
writing down some of the players that really have made
an impression on me, at least on the defensive side
of the ball, Guys that are new here, whether it
was a free agent or as a rookie, and Josh
Sweat was number one. He was number one. I think
he's the obvious. Then Kalais Campbell really just watching Kalaiis
(33:46):
go upout his business once again, what a pro he is.
In year eighteen, Dalvin Tomlinson was number three, and then
I wrote down Will Johnson number zero. I don't know
about you, Paully, this guy looks really, really good. And
I also put another rookie down, Jordan Birch. Those two
guys look good to me.
Speaker 4 (34:07):
You know. Jordan Burch really an unknown to a lot
of people, but he's a very similar body type to
a Zavon Collins. He can really move. He has a
lot of positional flexibility. I mean, we've seen Zavon off
the ball back at inside linebacker next to Mac Wilson
Senior and Buddha Baker was talking about how interchangeable so
(34:28):
many of the different parts are on the defense now,
not only the secondary him and Jalen Thompson playing strong
or free safety rabbits in the mix now, but guys
like Xavon Collins, Jordan Birch, you can mix and move
them all over the place. Mac Wilson Senior he can
come off the edge we saw at the end of
last year, or he can be in the middle. And
Buddha was just talking about how offenses are really going
to be wondering, wait a minute, who's playing where, what's
(34:50):
coming next?
Speaker 1 (34:51):
That's exactly right, Pauline, and I think that's what Nick
Rawlis wants. It's just amazing. Garrett Williams right in Dadrian Taylor,
Emerson Rabbit. Those two guys are so similar. They are
so similar they are. Their skill set, I think is
really really similar, and their mindset as well. They like
hanging out with each other and just watching them. They
(35:11):
position versatility, you can move them all over. This is
exactly what I think JG and Nick Rawlis are striving for.
Speaker 4 (35:19):
You know the other guy we missed a year two breakout,
Max Melton. Max Melton has looked really In fact, I
would say he's cornerback one right now. Him and Garrett
Williams when there's only two corners out there. They keep
Garrett Williams on the field. That's one thing I think
they decided Garrett Williams needs to stay on the field,
whether he's playing this con or outside corner.
Speaker 1 (35:38):
He's got a bully.
Speaker 4 (35:39):
And then there was a rep and in fact we
tweeted out Zay Jones came off the ball with some vengeance.
It was a one on one and we're standing right there,
right there, Yes, and he chucked Max Melton, who's stuck
with him, recovered and made the play on the ball,
and he.
Speaker 1 (35:54):
Chucked him where I would have said inofficial in a
game would have thrown the flag as an offense pass
interference push off, jacked him right in the chest and
then broke to the inside and Max was still there
on that ball and made that play.
Speaker 4 (36:11):
And you know, we're re encouraging, Max Melton said, along
with Rabbit at the end of last year, the defense
was so radically different from anything they played at either
Rutgers or at Texas Tech. So it took him a
while last year the scheme. But then Max Melton shared
with the media that Will Johnson has really adapted much
quicker than him to the scheme, and Drew Stann had
(36:32):
pointed that out a couple of months ago that Michigan's
defensive coordinator has NFL experience and was running an NFL
caliber scheme. So Drew predicted that Will Johnson would make
a very seamless transition to the league, and sure enough,
that's what Max Melton cited. And then Buddha brought up
Will Johnson on his own today seeing how good he's
looked and how he has not had a lot of
(36:53):
mental errors.
Speaker 1 (36:54):
Well, and that's why Jonathan Kennon as well. He loves
him some zero loves him some Will Johnson.
Speaker 4 (37:01):
Yeah zero going against eighteen. Speaking of you can get
ready for this season the Cardinals team shop. Get your
hands on the hottest Titans, including the recently drop Marvin
Harrison Junior Jersey. Go to Azycardinals dot com slash shop today.
All right, Wolf, we need your thoughts on the new
Cardinals Radio color analyst a Q Shipley. We come back,
Big Red Rage presented by Santan Ford and Gilbert.
Speaker 10 (37:30):
You are color commentating for the Arizona Cardinals this season. Congratulations?
Speaker 1 (37:35):
Probably maybe what does this mean?
Speaker 4 (37:38):
What does this mean?
Speaker 10 (37:39):
Have you always wanted to do color commentary?
Speaker 1 (37:42):
How expanse are you in this world?
Speaker 10 (37:43):
And how did this all come together?
Speaker 1 (37:45):
Yeah?
Speaker 11 (37:46):
I don't know if I've ever bet that's been a
dream of mine, per se. But I mean what I
do on your show is essentially that for offensive line
across the league, and now it's just going it live
at games, just for the Arizona Cardinals, which will be
really cool.
Speaker 3 (38:00):
It'll help me with in the Trenches segment.
Speaker 11 (38:02):
Obviously I'll get a first hand look at the air
Arizona Cardinals boots on the ground at every game. And
actually like Arizona Cardiners group, I think they've got one.
Speaker 12 (38:10):
Of the top ten groups in the in the in
the y.
Speaker 10 (38:13):
We know, yeah yesterday that we know that you think
that with the Arizona Cardinals. We completely understand by the
way you're gonna be on that plane. He's gonna be
on a plane. He's gonna be flying on the Cardinals
team plane.
Speaker 5 (38:26):
You know.
Speaker 1 (38:26):
Yeah, that's what happens here.
Speaker 4 (38:28):
It's the McAfee show, great stuff with a long time
analysts on that show and now Arizona Cardinals radio analyst
a Q. Shipley there with Pat McAfee. It is a
big red rage presented by santan Ford and Gilbert. We
are santan Ford and ship has big headsets to fill
replacing Ron Wolfley who was here so well, just to
(38:49):
recapital quick, was this something about twenty years where you said,
you know, I mean, you know, with the whole decision
to retire, I mean, you know, I mean you know
we've kind of blamed Pash, you know, I mean, really
you are you go ahead you and say, now day's fault. No,
but yeah, it was just time, I guess for you, right.
Speaker 1 (39:06):
It was time, BALI no doubt. All good things must
come to an end. And this was a wonderful thing
in my life. And I'm just so thankful that I
get to walk away and say thank you to the
Arizona Cardinals for allowing me to not only play for
them seven years, three years in Saint Louis and then
(39:28):
out here in Phoenix of course seven years with the organization,
but also twenty years as their radio analyst. It just
has been remarkable and such a blessing in my life.
But man, did they now it with Aq Shipley Baly.
You know Ship I know him. This is a brilliant individual. Okay,
(39:48):
it's got a brilliant brain and bloody knuckles. And that's
why I love the combination because he is he is
super smart based audience, and then he brings the heat.
He knows what it's like to play on that line
of scrimmage and bloody up your knuckles, and I love that.
I expect him to embellish a little.
Speaker 4 (40:07):
Bit on that.
Speaker 1 (40:09):
Look.
Speaker 4 (40:10):
The elite analysts, they're all about the infotainment and That's
why you would go viral every year on NFL Network
because the rest of the nation would get treated to
Ron Wolfley, both the entertainment and the analysis, the credibility,
the substance. But then what goes beyond the x's and oh's,
and it's the ability to mix those two that really
(40:31):
makes more the best analysts in the league. Here's a
q Shipley in fact on bickleyam Rada Arizona Sports ninety
eight seven FM on being named the Cardinals radio analyst.
Speaker 12 (40:41):
Ship You know, me being able to tell my story
in a different, unique way. Obviously, I'm not going to
be Ron Wolfley's an absolute legend in the sport. His
voice is unmatchable, and I'm not going to try and
emulate that in any way, shape or form. I don't
think I could ever reach that. But you know, he's
fantastic what he does. I'm gonna pick it brand, I'm
gonna pick days Brand, I'm gonna pick all my buddi
(41:01):
who are kind of doing this thing's brain. And I've
been fortunate enough, like I said, to be able to
do this a little bit on the Maxfie Show. But
now it's just gonna be in a different role where I'm.
Speaker 4 (41:09):
Calling it live. All We'll be doing it live, Ship,
There's no doubt about that. And you know what, just
as long as you respect the sideline reports, Okay, we'll
be all good around here going forward.
Speaker 1 (41:20):
I can't wait for that, Polly, and thank you guys.
Will build your own little Kevin straight right there? Can
I just say right now, there are three positions in
the game of football that really take a ton of
intellect outside of the quarterback position, PAULI there are three. Okay,
center is one of them, and that's a Q Shipley
right there. Mike linebacker is another one, especially Green Dot
(41:43):
Mike Lan and number three is full back. Of course,
as we all know, Paul, it takes intellect and brutality
to play those three positions and do it well. It
takes intellect and brutality. And that's what I love because
because Ship has got him covered bad. He's got the
(42:03):
intellect and he's got the brutality. He's gonna kill it. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (42:07):
Well, he was a seventh round pick who played in
over one hundred games in the NFL, so he knows about,
you know what, exceeding expectations and it's quite a legacy
that you left behind. But he has equipped he has
a skill set, There's no doubt about it. Do you
have any free advice for Ship or any other messages?
Speaker 1 (42:24):
Yeah, I hear it is right here. Step all over
the sideline reporter. Don't worry about it. Yeah, but do
not step on Pash. That's what I would say to Ship. Ship.
Just let him breathe give him, give him that room
because David, you know how good he is on these calls. Man,
they are things of gold that hang in the air,
(42:45):
and you've got to give him a room. Don't be
the guy, that's all. Don't be that guy. Let David talk.
That's what I would say to Ship.
Speaker 4 (42:55):
Would you also say if AQ talks into the next play,
he will get cut off of me to correct, because David,
you ain't messing around.
Speaker 1 (43:00):
That's right.
Speaker 4 (43:01):
If the play starts, he's going with a play by play.
Speaker 1 (43:03):
That's right. That quarterback is under center. Stop talking.
Speaker 4 (43:07):
No, But he does have the pleasure of working with
a top five play by play announcer on the planet
in Dave Pash. There's no doubt about that.
Speaker 1 (43:14):
I just think the combination of you three on the broadcast.
Pauline A and A. You know, I rip you all
the time, but I mean this one hundred percent. You
three guys on the broadcast and omes of course being
the best in game producer you could possibly have in
the National Football League. I think the combination of all
four of you guys is really going to be fantastic.
(43:35):
So I look forward to that in a big way.
Speaker 4 (43:38):
Well, I have the pleasure of handling his first two broadcasts,
as we'll be doing radio for the first two preseason
games while Dave Pash will be on the TV side
with sam Acho.
Speaker 1 (43:49):
Sammy, I saw that.
Speaker 4 (43:50):
That's right me talk about high IQ. The moment Samacho
walks into the booth, he's the smartest guy in the room.
I know that way.
Speaker 1 (43:57):
Yeah, I got into what I love the fact that
he spend such a great ambassador to the game of football.
He really has. And what I also like about it
is everyone thinks football players are dumb. No, They're so dumb,
especially when they hear me and I'm out there yelling
and scraming and stuff like Sammy is you want to
talk about that intellectual? That's who Sam Macho.
Speaker 4 (44:19):
Is, no doubt, so no truth to the rumor you've
been recruited by the WWE Wolf that you you finally
