Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome back. It's Bills by the Numbers, where we let
the stats tell you where the Bills are at. We're
presented by a fan Juel make every moment more coming up.
The Bill's initial roster has been set. What were the
surprise decisions and where might the roster be a bit thin?
Steve has quizzed on week one Bill's history, and we'll
have our one burning question. Someone get the silver dollar
(00:22):
for the coin toss. I'm glad you could join us
here on Bill by the Numbers. He's Bill Ball, a
famous Steve's fast around Bills Radio played by Playmak Chris Brown.
And the Bill's initial fifty three man roster is set.
(00:45):
There could be some small tweaks here and there over
the first couple of weeks, but more than thirty players
were trimmed from the roster over the course of the
last week. And these three things. Thing number one is
what are your thoughts at first blush of the ross
as it currently stands.
Speaker 2 (01:02):
Mister past, when this roster is healthy with the what
we know about the practice squad included in that it's
easily the most talented roster they've had since the Super Bowls.
It's Wow, top to bottom, front to back veterans mixed
(01:25):
with rookies, youth, athleticism, pedigree. When this roster's healthy, it's
maybe the best, the most talented roster they've had in decades.
Speaker 1 (01:39):
Okay, so you took an overarching view there. I'm gonna
take more of a little more of a pebble level observation.
I felt the initial fifty three man roster heavy a
defensive line, light at linebacker. They only keep five linebackers
on the roster on the initial fifty three. Maybe that's
an area where they tweak it a little because you
(02:00):
need special teams players, as we know, heavy at the
defensive lie five defensive ends, five defensive tackles, and you
have two on the reserve suspended list that you're gonna
have to figure out when they come back during the
bye in week seven on the roster. Officially they can
start practicing or they can start meeting with the team
(02:21):
and doing everything but practice in week four. So there're
gonna be some things to figure out there. But I
found some of those numbers at those two positions interesting thing.
Number two, what was the biggest roster decision surprise?
Speaker 2 (02:36):
I gotta say this, you know what it was for me.
I'm gonna go off the board a little bit. I thought,
was Shaq Thompson making a squad and only five linebackers.
Speaker 1 (02:45):
So you thought if Shaq Thompson made the roster, the
only way that was gonna happen was if they kept six.
Speaker 2 (02:51):
Yeah. Plus I thought the youth and athleticism of the
guys they drafted and all the guys that were in
the room already, I didn't know if they would be
able to Shaq thoms will be able to hang in.
Speaker 1 (03:01):
There with these kids.
Speaker 2 (03:02):
But his veteran leadership, his ability, his instincts, he brings
something to the room. I thought three weeks ago when
camp started, or four weeks ago when camp started, I
was like, I don't know Shaq Thompson. And now after
seeing him play, you can plug him in and let
him play. Yes, he's good.
Speaker 1 (03:20):
Still has a lot of the athleticism that made him
such a successful player, you know in his younger games.
Speaker 2 (03:26):
That's the surprise for me.
Speaker 1 (03:27):
Yeah, I think eleven months removed from Achille surgery. I
mean the way he was out there making plays, hitting people,
I was like, Wow, I couldn't believe he looked that
good less than a full year off the Achille.
Speaker 2 (03:41):
That's what struck me about it, and certainly everything else
that you know, a lot of the draft picks are
here for all except one, I guess, and just the
tight ends kind of went. Yeah, that was like, chalk
chalk it in. Trubisky's your backup the runningroom. No change there,
(04:01):
Reggie Gilliams has a fullback still hanging on to this roster.
It's just so. And the offensive line, you knew that
maybe they'd maybe there'd be some rents through in the
offensive line. None of those front five guys were gonna move,
so for me, certainly the draft choices on the interior
and the defensive line kind of went as expected.
Speaker 1 (04:24):
Yeah, I know, we had this discussion on our daily
show One Bills Live, the conundrum they faced in terms
of are they going to keep five offensive tackles and
they did a little roster gymnastics, but they found out
how to do it, and that kind of surprised me
a little bit. Not the designations, the fact that they're like,
(04:45):
we're keeping five right now. Obviously Spencer Brown and Dion
Dawkins and then Ryan Vandermark and the rookie Chase Lund
and they put Tyland Grable on injured reserve designated to
return as he's still in con Rushian protocol, so he'll
get the full amount of time to really recover from what,
(05:05):
at least by the time the amount of time he's
been out seems like a pretty serious concussion. So he
gets another month to kind of ramp up and get right,
and then they may have to make a decision at
that point in time, like what are we going to do?
So five offensive tackles out of the nine linemen, you
know you kept? That was something for me.
Speaker 2 (05:28):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (05:29):
Thing number three? What is your favorite thing about the
bills fifty three man roster as it sits here a
week away from the regular season opener? I think you
touched on it a little bit that you think it's
one of the most talented rosters. But what's your favorite
thing about it?
Speaker 2 (05:46):
How much younger they are from a year ago. He's
my favorite thing. Youth. Okay, they got some I think
they added some speed now. Obviously Max Harrison's a big
part of that if he gets back on the field
and can and just you know, is himself. Hancock is
a part of that. Dorian Stry wrong. As a part
of that. I like those guys in the backhand. They
bring something. And the youth up front as well. You know, TJ.
Sanders and Dion Walker are really intriguing to me. And
(06:10):
I think Joey Bosa as a veteran ad and I
just I just like the youth and athleticism they brought
to the table, and some of the guys from a
year ago, most notably Keon Coleman. He seems like a
different dude. I'm really excited to see him play.
Speaker 1 (06:31):
I'm I'm excited about the defensive line. That's where I said.
I mean, the youth and the talent they have there
might be as good as it's ever been in the
McDermot are you outline some of it? And that's without
Hoyt and Ogunjobi for the first six games. Add them
back into the mixed mid season, you could really have
a defensive front that is ferocious and unrelenting. They're just
gonna come at you in waves, which which is a
(06:52):
formula that worked very well for the Philadelphia Eagles last year. Right,
Let's not you know, dismiss that out of hand. So yeah,
I'm pumped about what the defensive line is gonna be
able to bring to the table this season. And then finally, Steve,
do you harbor any concerns that the roster might be
a bit thin at a given position or two heading
(07:13):
into the regular season.
Speaker 2 (07:16):
Yeah, your thin at corner your depth. I mean, Dorian
Strong is sitting behind Christian Benford, you got Trey White
and JaMarcus Ingram. Certainly, Max change is that when he
comes on, because to me, Max goes right up at
the top, if not with Christian Benford right next to
(07:38):
him or right behind him, he goes in at the
top of the food chain or higher up the food chain,
So that changes things automatically. So for a month they're
gonna have Dorian Strong and JaMarcus Ingram. Yeah, the defensive
secondary has been a concern. I don't think it's as
big a concern when they're all healthy, but they're not.
They haven't been all the way through training camp, so
we're kind of going with what we think is probably
(08:01):
the case, not that we know that is the case.
Speaker 1 (08:04):
I'm I'm hopeful that seeing Max Harston on IR designated
to return is an indication that they don't expect to
be without Trudeavious White, that's healthy for very long here,
He's still his status is still completely up in the
air for Week one until we get more information.
Speaker 2 (08:25):
And tells me their suspicions are that he'll be there.
Speaker 1 (08:27):
But yeah, I would tend to think his prognosis is
on the shorter side of the timetable than the longer
side with Max and look, they could be mutually exclusive,
but I kind of sense that one is tied to
the other. Sure, And so hopefully you know Trudeavius is
ready for the season opener against Baltimore, because if he's not,
(08:48):
that likely thrusts JaMarcus Ingram into the starting lineup. And
if that's the case, Max Harriston can't get healthy soon enough.
Time to pivot to the numbers game, where Steve will
be quizzed on Bills Week one history. Let's do it.
(09:09):
Question number one, Which NFL opponent have the Bills faced
the most in a season open?
Speaker 2 (09:19):
The New York Jets. It is not now York.
Speaker 1 (09:24):
I was stunned too, the Finns. It is the Miami Dolphins.
Seven times in Week one in their history they have
faced one.
Speaker 2 (09:32):
Another.
Speaker 1 (09:33):
Question number two, when was the last time the Bills
had a shutout? Victory in the season opening. It's been
a minute. I'll tell you that.
Speaker 2 (09:50):
It's been like like one man, not that old, okay, okay,
something like that. I don't even know ninety one we
did that, but I'll say like twenty twelve, like that
was it, the the New England game, the thirty one
(10:11):
nothing game.
Speaker 1 (10:12):
There you go. It wasn't twenty twelve.
Speaker 2 (10:14):
I don't know when that was.
Speaker 1 (10:15):
I was two thousand and three. So I'll get you
half a point for that one. We got half the information.
It was the you remember the score. That's good.
Speaker 2 (10:23):
Come on, that's pretty good.
Speaker 1 (10:25):
Sam Adams going back on an interception return. That was
the rumble big man rumble safety's name that we got
that week. Oh lawyer mlloy game, Yeah, gets a sack
on Brady pumping fist.
Speaker 2 (10:37):
People are doing nothing.
Speaker 1 (10:38):
They cut it. That was it. Yes, that was when
you knew that he signed on Tuesday before the game,
cut by the Patriots and he was their off season
workout champ.
Speaker 2 (10:49):
I mean he was like the guy that got awards
and they pumped him and they cut him.
Speaker 1 (10:54):
Yeah yeah, and then went on to win the Super Bowl.
Question that's in number three. What are the most points
scored by the Bills in a season opener in their history.
Speaker 2 (11:10):
More than thirty one.
Speaker 1 (11:11):
It is. And this I don't expect you to get
this because it's way back, but just give me a
number of what you think the point record is forty two?
You nailed it, Steve, it is forty two points. It happened.
Speaker 2 (11:27):
What I'm talking about?
Speaker 1 (11:29):
Where was it?
Speaker 2 (11:30):
What happened?
Speaker 1 (11:31):
It happened in the season opener in nineteen seventy five
when the Bills hosted the Jets, and they won forty
two to fourteen.
Speaker 2 (11:41):
That is half court, blindfolded shot for the money.
Speaker 1 (11:44):
I think you got it. I think you were turned around, dude,
right over the head. Do you know?
Speaker 2 (11:50):
Here's the thing.
Speaker 1 (11:50):
You know it's gonna be one there.
Speaker 2 (11:52):
Wow, it's gonna be one of those. It's gonna be
thirty five or some forty two, you know, one of
these touchdown and for year.
Speaker 1 (11:57):
Right, that was good? Oh how about a right now, Steve,
let's try to go. Let's try to go three and
a half for four. What is the largest margin of
victory in a season opener in Bill's history.
Speaker 2 (12:12):
That's got to be it forty two? That is not it.
Speaker 1 (12:15):
Really it was forty two to fourteen was the final,
So it's only a twenty eight point victory more than okay,
And I will give you a hint. Your crew did
it in a season opener, the largest margin of victory.
Think of a route Week one as forty eight to
(12:37):
three or something like that. Well, I don't need I know,
but I'm saying a season opener, I'll say, where you
just romped somebody.
Speaker 2 (12:53):
Thirty eight to three was the score, and I'll say
it was minding the Jets.
Speaker 1 (13:03):
Wasn't the Jets? This happened in nineteen ninety two season opener.
Speaker 2 (13:08):
Yeah, wait Rams Rams Rams forty one to three or
something like that.
Speaker 1 (13:14):
Final was forty to seven. Yeah, and your margin of
victory was thirty three points. That is still the record
and the margin of victory in a season open.
Speaker 2 (13:23):
That's the Vernon Turner game.
Speaker 1 (13:25):
That's also the game I was at LA right, No, No,
I was here, it was he was here.
Speaker 2 (13:29):
It's a game. It was a game I hit the
Vernon Turner in. And it's also the game that James
Lawtons at the all time record proving the yards by
a wide receiver.
Speaker 1 (13:36):
Did you separate Vernon Turner from the football no, oh.
Speaker 2 (13:41):
Separated him from the ground.
Speaker 1 (13:43):
Oh, okay, it's about it knocked him off his feet. Yeah,
it was the first thing that hit the ground. Your
shoulder blades.
Speaker 2 (13:52):
Good, it was. It was one of the all time
good hits.
Speaker 1 (13:54):
All right, that is the numbers game that's entertaining.
Speaker 2 (13:57):
I'll say this, that hit was so it was a
chapter in Vernon's autobiography. Vernon and I are good buddies.
Speaker 1 (14:03):
He's gonna have to good builds.
Speaker 2 (14:04):
Great. He's one of the all time great guys and
his story is unbelievable. He wrote a book about Vernon Turner,
and I'm actually in it because of it.
Speaker 1 (14:12):
Yeah, oh, that's pretty cool. Yeah, that's a little the
tip of the old chap poo. It's mister tasker.
Speaker 2 (14:18):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (14:19):
We move along now to our one burning question. If
you had to pick a player on offense and a
player on defense to provide a sharp spike in production
in the twenty twenty five season, who are you picking
on each side of the ball.
Speaker 2 (14:39):
On offense, it would be Keon Coleman, the wide receiver.
I think he's gonna play. He plays seventeen games. He's
gonna obviously spike up in his production. I think he's
going to be a difference maker, not just overall, but
also in situational football. So keon on the on that
side of the ball, on the on the defensive side
of the ball. I think they're going to have a
(15:04):
Buffalo Bill defensive lineman go into double digit sacks in
the first one since Leonard Floyd did it. Who it's
going to be? I think I think Joey Bosa might
have twelve to fifteen sacks this year.
Speaker 1 (15:20):
That's a fifteen, it's a fat number.
Speaker 2 (15:22):
I think he might have twelve snaps this year.
Speaker 1 (15:25):
I also went keyon Coleman On offense, I think he's
going to have seven eight touchdowns. I think he's going
to look like a manchild out there this year. He
has been kept under wraps, and I think it's by
design because he is killing it.
Speaker 2 (15:43):
He has been impossible to guard and he's just been
a big, physical player. That's yeah. I think.
Speaker 1 (15:51):
So on defense, I am going Matt Milano. I am
going to speak this in to existence. This Wily Vett's
gonna play seventeen regular season games and he is going
to tear it up and just have all Pro numbers
again like he did in twenty twenty two when he
(16:15):
got first team or second team All Pro honors I
think it was, and.
Speaker 2 (16:19):
Just absolutely killed it. And then.
Speaker 1 (16:22):
When he gets back, Michael Hoyt, that guy was a
menace in the preseason. People are gonna forget about him.
And he's gonna come back in week eight after the bye,
and he's gonna look like a guy that's got his
hair on fire and they don't even have any hair
because he shaves his head.
Speaker 2 (16:40):
Yeah, he's that's a good one too. And he might
come back and him and Bosa, Bosa's on the field,
and that's going to be a hard new to to
contend with. They're gonna be that's a huge Just.
Speaker 1 (16:53):
Put a turbo package out there him, Rousseau Sanders.
Speaker 2 (16:58):
I have real high hopes for TJ. Sanders and Dion
Walker as well, high hopes for those two.
Speaker 1 (17:06):
They're on the come for sure. Our closing figure deals
with Buffalo's first place schedule by virtue of being a
division champion for the fifth straight season in twenty twenty four.
That is part of the reason why, for the sixth
straight year, the Bills in twenty twenty five will be
squaring off against both defending Conference champions for the sixth
(17:29):
straight year in twenty twenty Kansas City and San Fran
twenty twenty one, Kansas City and Tampa Bay, twenty twenty two,
Cincinnati and the Rams, twenty twenty three, Kansas City and Philly,
and twenty twenty four Kansas City and San Fran. Here
in twenty twenty five Kansas City and Philadelphia. Here's the
craziest part. No other NFL team has had this happen
(17:52):
to them more than twice since twenty twenty, while the
Bills have had it happened to them for six consecutive
seasons counting this year. That is amazing a lot. They're
still winning double digit games every year.
Speaker 2 (18:06):
That is it is amazing. It is something too that
when you think about the big picture of the NFL
teams like Washington, who kind of came from nowhere last year,
it's gonna be different for them. That's why Houston last
year took a little bit of a step back. They
had a first player sten years, they had a first
play schedule. It's weekend, week out. It's hard to answer
that bell against a really good opponent who's tough to
(18:27):
beat and doesn't beat themselves. The Bills do that constantly
with teams that are in the playoff hunt and in
the conversation every year or in the super Bowl or
in the super Bowl, they and the Bills answer that bell.
They have been They have been a tough out for everybody,
super Bowl champions and conference champions alike. This team is
(18:51):
a load.
Speaker 1 (18:52):
