Speaker 1 (00:00):
You know, we've had some legendary Atlanta Falcons players on
this podcast. We've had coaches and gms. We've had some
rising NFL stars too, But today we have what I
consider pioneers, really icons when it comes to southern hip
hop in the Atlantic music scene. So, without further ado,
because you can see them all here, I'd like to
(00:21):
welcome the members of Goody Mob, Big Get, Kujo, Cielo,
Timo to Bird Noises and Atlanta Falcons Podcast about football
and mostly everything else. Guys, Welcome, what's up? I love
it you guys have been doing your homework a little bit.
(00:43):
Um So, Guys, I am stoked to have you here,
and I really want to thank you for carving time
out of your schedules to join us. UM So, before
we get into your latest work, what you're currently focusing
your efforts on, um about the impact you've made on
hip hop in Atlanta, and talk a little Falcons football
(01:05):
at the end, I gotta ask you guys a quick question.
I gotta ask. I'm gonna ask each twenty y it's
really important. So I'm gonna just go in alphabetical order here.
All right, big Yep, I'm starting with you, what do
you think of the name bird noises? Be brutally honest
country boy tones? Great? You like it? I love it?
(01:28):
All right, cel bird noises? You dig it or hate it?
I think it's cool. I think you could have want
to step further. They called the show birst. Oh you
know what? That would grab some attention. I like how
you think? Um? All right, Coo Joe, what do you
(01:50):
think it? Bird noises? Bird no bird noises? I think
y'all would beg a little bit more different. You know
what I'm talking about? Heard? Yeah, you know what I'm saying.
I don't know. You know what I'm saying. Um, I
don't know. I mean a little bit deeper, you know
what I'm saying. But yeah, I'm a little bit deeper, man.
I mean I like bird I like birds. That's nice.
(02:12):
That's first. That's dope. Birds about about bird drill drill? Okay,
all right, give me something, Timo, Timo work for you
or not? Oh? Yeah? Well, you know, the bird noise
automatically connects with the bee man and the only thing
(02:33):
that I can relate to with love. I love it.
But when you're saying bird noises, that generalizes it. You
know too much? Like, you know, you have to be
specific on what is the noise of the falcon? You
know what I'm saying. Yeah, No, that's that's fair. That's right,
(02:55):
you're right. We gotta get back to the drawing board.
Baby on listen. Oh no, it's just close, you're close.
We're nineteen episodes in. But I just love the responses
so much. I keep asking everybody, so well, guys, let's talk.
Let's talk some uh, let's talk some soul food, shall we? Um?
It was twenty five years ago. When I think twenty
(03:15):
five years ago, and I think of the nineteen nineties,
when I think of the the Atlanta Falcons. When I
think of d I think a Dion Sanders. I think
at Tim mckaire. I think of Jerry Glanville. I think
of Jesse Tuggle the Hammer. I think a Swag, I
think attitude. I think of Dirty Birds. And when I
(03:36):
think of dirty Birds, I think of the Dirty South.
Right about twenty five years ago, you guys changed the
hip hop scene and you you establish yourself as the
South is the third Coast. So talk about soul food
at a time when you know hip hop was dominated.
I'm sure you guys have talked about this a lot,
(03:57):
but you know, La New York were dominating hip the
hip hop scene. But when you guys made soul food
and came out sell therapy and black ice, what's that
journey been for you since? And I let any one
of you kind of take it and and just and
then I want to talk about the impact it's made
on not just hip hop, for Atlanta in the South.
(04:19):
I'm now I get it now, the marriage between sports
and entertainment, because ultimately that they're one and the same.
But like, yeah, like you know, I think the connection
is um. You know, it's primal, you know what I mean.
You know, it's definitely cultural and communal, and so you
know that's the same with sports. It's all about team
(04:42):
spirit and city pride. And I believe that that was
our general you know attitude, you know, UM and going
into UH creating and forging a collective of local UH
and native artists of the city to really really represent
Atlanta to the best of our ability. Any one of
you guys who want to jump in on that, just
(05:03):
about you know, where you guys were twenty five years
ago in the importance of you know, being a voice
representing the artists of Atlanta. You're carving out your niche.
You know, went to Dirty South, so to speak, was good.
I want to just say that, go ahead, cool now.
(05:24):
I just want to say man that really it was.
It was perfect timing, and it was it was an
action bruining and waiting to happen, because I could definitely
say that as far as me, Coo Joe, Gibbs Clo,
we were all doing hip hop at that particular time.
I know me and Coo Joe were linked together. We
had a group called lumber Jacks at that particular time,
(05:44):
and we're also students at Mars Brown College, so we
were around a lot of people from New York, from
Detroit and Chicago and all over the United States of America,
and Atlanta really didn't have a hippop voice at that
particular time, and we didn't. I can't honestly say that
we knew that we were gonna feel that void, but
I can definitely say we were definitely putting forth for
effort to at that particular time. One of the first
(06:06):
songs me and Coo Joe came up with was called
Worse than the Second Verse. And I can remember what
all I talked about in my verse was about Atlanta,
you know, Atlanta being well was happening, you know what
I mean. And it was all about that. You know,
we went from Manhattan, you know, and that's like you say,
it was all about then from New York, all about
being from the West coast. They were beefing and they
did not see they did not see this this juggernaut
(06:29):
waiting to happen. And it's still happening. And it ain't
stopped slapping them since we still slapping them in by
the slab them some mote. So talk to them, Joe,
good to talk to him. Joe. And I think like
when we came with like the title soul food, I
think a lot of people could relate to soul food
coming up out of the style. Yeah, you know what
(06:50):
I mean. So you know, you're just gonna get a
heathen helping a fried chicken, macaroni and cheese and Cali Greys.
What we did was we actually walked into you know
what I'm saying, basic food groups, you know what I'm saying.
So we just tried to tie ourselves in with being
a part of the basic food group, but just really
having an identity in the South, you know what I'm saying,
(07:10):
because and right then Atlanta didn't really have an identity,
but with teams like the Atlanta Fives that we can,
you know what I'm saying, relate to ourselves too. And
you know I'm saying, have some of the gear and everything.
So people not only would were here where we're from
when they see it, you know, they were recognized by
it with the with the uniforms and with the tide
that we had, only they were recognized that he was
(07:32):
from Atlam before they even heard us talk. So you
know when we talked, that was that was one thing
that was hindering us because it was like y'all talk
country and you know what I mean, y'all Obama and
this and that. But you know, once they got the lords,
you know, we kind of grew on them. And and
(07:53):
I think and I think sports always it always was
in a twin because we always was real big sports
fans on the Dungeon. So you know, always when we
were creating soul food, you know, the Falcons was always on.
I mean, I could tell you Dean Sanders was a
big part of my my whole flock. Like Dean Sanders
used to be up in Magic City and the way
(08:15):
he used to dress and the gold chains, and he
represented everything about the street culture. So you know, me personally,
I think that the Falcons, the players own the team,
rising a lot of them people, you know, like they
really had big names in Atlanta and they were real
big personalities. So it really helped us. It helped us.
(08:36):
It gave us a lot of a lot of flavor,
you know, because we felt like people that was representing
on the Atlanta Falcons were real superstars. Like Dean was
a superstar in Atlanta. So you know, you know, his
his his style and his grace and things that he does.
It kind of transcends sports, you know what I mean.
So you know, I think we kind of we used
(09:00):
a lot of the stuff that was going on at
that time. You know, the Braids was doing great, everything
was doing great in Atlanta. So as far as us
and you know, creating in that in that atmosphere, it
really helped us and it gave us a lot of
energy man to stand up for Atlanta at that time. Right, Yeah,
that's right, that's I was trying to make that connection.
I didn't think I don't think it's it's a tough
(09:21):
connect at all. I think. I think when you think
of those teams and those personalities in your music, it
was intertwined. I mean, that's that's that's a fair way
to look at it. Yes, yeah, yeah, uh well go ahead, absolutely,
because even we get just mentioning uh uh, legendary Andre Risen,
(09:45):
you know what I mean. He was a liking rod
you know at that moment, and more or less a
kind of do it between you know, the the Arn't
community and the sports community, simply because um he was
a bigger name saint at the time than Tupac and
two Pock and mc breed shot that classic video. I
got to get mine at ajo Ros's house, and that
(10:05):
was a big thing from Atlanta at that time, you
know what I mean, like because it was Tupac, you know,
coming to the city being acknowledged and acknowledge of one
of our own at that time, and you know, of
course this relationship with Lisa Left Eye. They were the
biggest girl group and ultimately ended up being the biggest
girl group of all time, you know what I'm saying.
So yeah, yeah, so it wasn't hand in hand. Well,
(10:28):
when you think about the the impact you you know,
we're sitting here talk about the impact that you guys
had on Atlanta in the South and how people view it.
Um you know, going back now, you guys produce so
food to ninety five, still standing in ninety eight and
feel free to jump in if I get anything's wrong.
But I got World Party in ninety nine and then
(10:49):
One Monkey, Don't Stop, No Show and then Age Against
the Machine in twenty thirteen. That nie for you right now?
And you know where where when you think about the
impact and where you guys are now, what where are
you focusing your efference on right now? And what's what's
(11:12):
what's what's good are you working on now? And where
are you focusing your reference right now? Because there're a
lot going on, not just in Atlanta but all over
the all of the country. And so what what are
you guys what's important to you right now? Can you
talk about that that motivation you guys had back in
the mid nineties, what is that? What is that fire
now for you guys? I mean I just speak for me.
(11:33):
The motivation for me, it's just like just like what players,
it's the fans. It's the fans, because when you walk
out your house whether you're a musician or whether you're
a player, and people that gravitate towards you or toward
your your group or towards your team. Yeah, you know,
you don't want to let them down. So it's like
(11:54):
when I come out, when I come out, my bird now,
so my my bird hole. You know what I mean,
what a pucker hole? I see fans, Man, They're like,
oh man, you know, Goodie Mob did this for me.
I mean, GOODYMP changed my life, oh man. When I
was in cottage. Good MP helped me focus on you
know what I'm saying, what I had to do in life. Yeah,
And man, that that right there, man, and then you
(12:17):
coming up on twenty five years of that that it
even makes you even more love what you do, man,
and take more pride in what you do and perfected
as much as you can, man, because the fans are
waiting on it, man, and you don't want to let
them down. Man. So I think it's the fans that
really motivate me number one. Anybody else want to jump
(12:39):
in on that one? I think I think it's just
the timing. I think since Mark, since this new world
that we're living in, since the pandemic Heaven. I think
it gave Goodie Mob and all the members of the
Dungeon family. It slowed our world down. I think it
slowed the whole world down. Everybody got to look around
and see what's really important. And I think it was
the first time that we ever was all of us
(13:01):
was back home. But this amount of time, you know,
um and you know being home, I think we would
just spark with the movement. It gave us. It gave
us a new direction. It's like people learned and even
like the song Sale Therapy, the song grew during the pandemic.
It's bigger than it. It's as big as it was
when it first came out twenty five years go. Now,
(13:23):
So it's like it gave us motivation to go back
into the studio and create a new a new chapter
for Goodymorrow. Is that? Are you breaking a little news
here or you uh, you want to tell us what
you guys are working on here right now? It's a
new album. It's done, it's done, it's done. Yeah, what
what what what can we look forward to? What's the message?
(13:46):
You know? Where you guys talk about the critical juncture
we're at in our country right now, especially with civil
rights and social injustice, social justice. Goodiemore wouldn't come back
and speak about nothing else but what's important, what's the
order of the day, you know. So I mean with
that being said, I mean we're not We're only a
few weeks out and then everybody can start riding this
(14:08):
new good. Am there's new there's new good in more music, tease,
tease anything else on there as far as like maybe
title or or or some of the songs or some
of the messages. Uh the title, okay, all right, all
you can say comes in October second October, second October
(14:32):
second midnight, look forward. It's going it's going up new
good at all? Can't wait? What what what? What gift
saying is? That's like the tip of the iceberg, you
know what I mean, Like you know, it's it's one
thing to you know, build the anticipation, you know what
I mean, And it's another thing to actually meet the expectation.
And so first you have to meet the expectation, uh
(14:55):
of each other, you know, and you know all of
the internal affairs, you know, like as a collective effort.
So you know, I think we I think we satisfied ourselves.
I mean, I think that it was really monumental because
it's been you know, so long for us to get
back working with organized noise again. So it was it
(15:16):
was like we we did a complete one eighty coming
right back home to square one. That same that same
uh sentiment, that same uh solidarity, Uh, the same strength,
you know what I mean, Uh, and that same south
and southern sensibility. It's all there, that all the essential
oils you know inside of this uh you know of this,
(15:41):
this this offering, you know what I mean. And so
we're we're we're very happy about it to feel very
strong and confident about it, um going into the next
phase of the project. And so this is one of
those things just to give you guys just a little
you know, incentive to uh keep your your eyes and
ears peeled, you know, for the new project, coming new single,
am correct, Yes sir, yes, sir? Right, all right October second.
(16:08):
Can't wait, um, well, knowing everything that you guys have
done and and what you stand for and uh you
know the purpose behind your music, I can't I can't
wait to uh to listen to it, and uh I
think you've teased teased teased it pretty well. Um, well,
let me, let's let's pivot a little bit. Let me
(16:30):
which which one are you for? Is the biggest Falcons fan?
Are you all big fans? Are you all which gentleman?
I mean, I'm a big fan, win lose a draw man.
I just I got off. I got off. I g
the other day with somebody I had post. I think
I might have posted the stadium or might have posted
(16:50):
my jersey or something. Yeah, and somebody said, you said,
that's okay, y'all still gonna lose. I said, I said,
it's okay, atl when I left it like that, you
know what I'm saying. So, I mean with me, and
I think it's I think it's kind of personal because
I'm from Atlanta. I'm born and raised in Northwest Atlanta,
(17:12):
So I'm from Atlanta. So I can't like another team
with me. I can't like another team that. I mean,
I had to go live in the other state to
like that team, you know what I mean. So I
mean that's how extra and excessive I am about it,
you know what I mean. But I'm just like I'm
I mean, I like how the A team players a
little lose, win lose a drawer. You gotta come back
(17:34):
the next day and you still gotta play. And I
like that, you know what I mean. It's not they're
not quitters and I'm not a quitter either, you feel
what I'm saying. So I mean, I'm a fan of
I'm a fan of that type of that type of
thought process when it when it comes down to it,
you know what I mean? Can I chime in on
that joke, y'all? I want to say something. I want
(17:56):
to say something really honest. I believe that, you know everything,
it's gonna be biased towards their team, you know what
I mean That that's that's a given, you know, But
I will say something really honest about Atlanta Falcons. Atlanta
Falcon fans. Sometimes we could be fair weather fair weather fans,
and in my correct gut, sometimes we can no man
(18:19):
like you know, um because for some reason like that,
I was like a gift and the curse. When we're strong,
we're strong. Did we have little little hiccups the moments
like we just had the other day at the game.
It's like, it's unbelievable. Sometimes I've seen people, you know,
be totally dismissive. You know what I'm saying, which is
(18:40):
which is you know, I guess it's probably just in
the heat of the moment of the emotion of something,
and that that's probably at the core of every shoe,
die hard sportsman. You could get upset. I've seen people
get the fighting, trying, destroying shape when their team when
they team loses. So I'm just basically saying it like that.
But you know, like you know, of course we got
(19:01):
unconditional love for the city and the team that represents
this city, you know what I mean. And so we're
going all the way back to Steve BARKASKI with this
Billy White shue. What I'm saying all of that, Yeah,
we go way back, man. It's it's it's in the blood, man,
you know what I mean. I mean, like I said
with me, if I see the Father's plan, I can't
(19:21):
root for the other team. Yeah, I mean, what kind
of what kind of person would what kind of fan
are you? You root for the next team? I mean,
I just can't. I can't fathom that it won't even compute. Well,
part of the reason I asked is because I wanted
to find out who who is the sounds like y'all
love the atl the dirty Birds, um but I gotta
(19:44):
ask you about the new the new duds, like what
do you think you're wearing? The new jersey? What do
you what do you think of the new Ducks? Oh? Man,
you know what you got the swag and y'all. I
love the admitted y'all did too. You know, y'all gotta
cut to where you can't grab on to it. You
know what I'm saying. Dvs can't grab like that on
it like that and they fit like a They fit
(20:07):
like a t. You know what I'm saying. But it's
a it's a fitted cut t and it's man, it's real.
The material is really stretchy man. I love it. Man,
I'm what it is today. Well, I go to day
asking if you had shoulder pads on or was it
when you're gonna put shoulder bay? I could get something
(20:27):
a little style phone than they stick up right right now? Man,
it's that ain't a real big so I take I
take it. Thumbs up y'all, y'all like the the new Duds.
I love ATR right here, that's boss right here. Atar.
I know, I know our instruction wanted to be too much,
uh in detail about what we were what we ain't
(20:48):
going on, but I wouldn't say this. Yeah, we just
shot We just shot a new video, you know, for
for the new single, and man I got I got
all of the throwback vintage uh foulcons. G it's crazy
like you gotta trip outa the city. Gonna love it
the city. They're not only just gonna love that, they're
gonna love us song. They'nae. They're gonna love to see
the Fourth Horsemen riding again. I love it. Well, you
(21:13):
guys are gonna have to come back on and talk
about it now because you just if you've you've given
us so much. Um, well, let's let's talk a little
bit about well, let's talk some falcons. Now, there were
uh these you know, we're two games in and uh
you know, how are you feeling about where they're at
right now? You brought up the game the other day.
Get get be honest, be unfiltered. What what do you
(21:36):
think about this team? It's got some parts now they
look good, they look good, they look good. But you know,
our problem is always been celebrating too early and not
finishing the third and fourth quarter. I'm out. You know,
you can't win the game in the first and second
football is won in the third and fourth quarters. So
you know, we just gotta stop, you know, celebrating at
(21:56):
the beginning and win the game and celebrate after we
win in you know, we got to get that together. Well,
I think the first game, from the first game to
this game, yeah, definitely an improvement. Yeah, definitely an improvement.
I just think we got caught off guard with the
own side kick, and I think we just I think
(22:16):
we just maybe just drew a blank or something right there.
You know, it's about staying focused, man, And it's easy
to lose focus. And I think I thought it was like,
oh man, what you're doing. But it's easy to lose focus, man,
in crucial moments like that, you know what I mean.
So I think this next game, even though it's a
big game with Chicago, you know what I mean, And
(22:37):
we got to when we got green Bay coming up next. Yeah,
I think I think we can do something with Chicago.
I think when we go in and and we we
typened up some of the screws and some of the
nuts and boats, man, and and watch out for that
next time, man, I think we can. I think I
think we're good, man. I think I don't like to lose.
I hate it. I hate we lost. I'm telling I
can't stand that. I hate it. On we got more
(23:02):
games coming. So, like I said, you gotta have a
short memory, right, a short memory. I got to chime
in on that too. Man. I think the coming I
made about being a fair weather fan, I think I
might have been just I got to just own up
to that. I think I was talking about myself even
more so because I was. I missed both games because
(23:23):
I was traveling the first game, that's I took the
first flight off taken in the last six months going
to handlesome business um. And then we were filming the
day of the second game, and once we we were
just we were celebrate. We were hugging, like, yo, happens
is up like nine, like you know or whatever, and
we was all excited about it because we were just
(23:45):
in the spirit of just you know, having a wonderfully
productive day and they were just developing, you know, being
built out just so nicely. So we were all in
a good in a great space. And then seconds later
they lost the game. And so therefore I just see
the actual game when I didn't, I didn't find it
necessary to go back and look at any highlights of
(24:05):
the lost. Yeah, you guys have kind of you know
when I look at you guys, you guys have climbed
the mountaintop. You know when you talk about what you've
done in the music scene, the hip hop scene in
the South, you guys have overcome and you guys have
reached it. What do you think when you look at
this team? It's Scott's like when you look at some
(24:27):
of the parts on this team, it's got It's got
Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley, and they got Todd Gurley
now and Matt Ryan and Grady Jared. They've got all
these great parts. What do you think this team? I
want to hear from goody Ma. What do you think
this team needs to do to get to the mountaintop?
(24:48):
Man me personally? Like I said the first two games,
you know what I mean. It's like I said the
first game, that score from this game, you see improvement,
you know what I mean? I say, continue doing what
you're doing and work on the mental the mental mistakes,
(25:09):
because one little mental mistake can cause you the game.
And we see that, you know what I mean. Just
like Gil said too about celebrating early. Yeah, man, I
can understand that you're playing the datas Cowboys and and
you up and you might got some some young players
on the team that hadn't experienced that. But that's when
you got your you know, when you got your og
like Hula Yo and Matt come in, you know what
(25:31):
I mean, and some of the defensive players to come in. Man,
it's like y'all calm down and it ain't over yet
until the three z rows on the club, you know
what I mean? So absolutely, state man, just stay focused, man,
and and minimize the mental mistakes. Man, do you think
you think I say no, I g no only fans
(25:51):
and no Magic City, and we're gonna be out right.
You guys got it? You got any prediction is? Uh? Look,
look with their two games in, you got four team
more to go. You guys saw the Saints fall last night. Yeah,
everybody's beating everybody's beatable. Yeah. Hey what what what? What?
(26:13):
What what do you think this team with fourteen games ago?
What's your expect expectation? But the Fathers yep, ten fo
okay ten and four finish? I like it. I think
we can win out on the vision. I think we
I think we win out of the vision and at
out the vision, I think we can really start really
(26:36):
talking about big novels like that, you know what I mean? Yep,
if yeah, we definitely get these next wins man, and
show these other teams that, you know what I mean,
We just not on paper it look good on paper,
you know what I mean? You can do it on
the on the on the grid eye too. I think
the boost confidence, back up, the morale back up, man.
I think we can do it all right, cel since
(26:57):
you promised to be a better lesson the fairway other
fans and better fans. What's your prediction for the Falcons
down the stretch and can we see any of you
guys at the games? If they start, there's gonna they're
gonna start letting fans back in October. So I was
just about to say that, say that too. I'm I'll
be so happy when that happens that that would mean
(27:19):
at large was starting to resume back to you know,
a little bit more normalcy at a time. I think
everybody will be able to appreciate that, and um, it'll
