(00:20):
Joining me here in the Broncos Podcast studio for today's
episode of Broncos Now is Fela Team reporter Film Malani. Phil.
Thanks for joining the showome On.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
Thank you very much.
Speaker 1 (00:29):
We missed you last week. I know, of course we
had Eric on, but.
Speaker 2 (00:32):
Wow, that's not as good.
Speaker 1 (00:35):
Well, Phil, how are we doing? Are you? Have you
recovered from Super Bowl Sunday yet?
Speaker 2 (00:38):
Yeah? What a crazy game.
Speaker 1 (00:39):
I know it really was so in the beginning.
Speaker 2 (00:42):
But Broncos fans probably charing for the forty nine ers,
of course, But I think that at this point, you know,
I think it's okay to just kind of resign, be
resigned to the fact that, look, Patrick Mahomes is amazing,
and like, let's just appreciate some of the amazing things
that you know, take place. I think with like any
(01:02):
player like him, who's really great. There's like a period
of time where you're like, I hate this guy. They're
not as good as the everybody thinks they are. Then
at some point you just kind of cross a threshold
and you're just like, all right, this guy's amazing. We're
just gonna have to deal with this, and let's just
like appreciate what he's doing. I guess for what it is.
Speaker 1 (01:21):
Yeah, you can't his ability at all exactly.
Speaker 2 (01:23):
Yeah, And now, you know, I think it's kind of
like a similar thing happened with nicolee Jokich. I think
in the NBA, where like people are like denying his
greatness for a long long time. Then he wins, you know,
the finals last year, and then you're like, Okay, he's amazing,
and let's just like accept this is the same kind
of thing I think with my homes now, where now
(01:44):
he's like clearly like he's in the top three. I
think of quarterbacks all the time. Already, He's only twenty
eight years old, and like the pairing of him and
Andy Reid togethers teemed to be like a perfect marriage.
So yeah, I mean, it sucks that he place for
the Chiefs, but you know, it's No, there's no denying
(02:06):
the fact that he's amazing.
Speaker 1 (02:07):
For sure, and it's fun to watch him play too.
Speaker 2 (02:09):
Yeah. Yeah, and it was like entertaining at the end.
Speaker 1 (02:11):
It was, you know, so it came down to the wire.
Speaker 2 (02:14):
I think the forty nine ers had some missed opportunities
early but.
Speaker 1 (02:18):
Didn't nearly kill you phil to see John elwayhand they.
Speaker 2 (02:22):
Did that, Yeah, why did I have to do that?
Speaker 1 (02:24):
I think it was interesting.
Speaker 2 (02:26):
I think it would be better for everybody involved if
like they had a former legend from each team sort
of on hand there to be able to walk to
deliver the trophy, you know, Like did you see at
the beginning where they were doing some of the intros
where like Jerry Rice did the video, Tony Gonzalez did
the video similar thing, I think to deliver the trophy,
(02:48):
you know, because it might have been cool for John
to be able to do that with the forty nine
ers and John Lanch was there, you know, and their
buddies and stuff. But the Chief Yeah, I just oh
my god. And I know Chiefs fans were relishing in
that and like and yeah, and it's just kind of
that kind of sucked at the end. Yeah, like that
(03:09):
but I like John in an uncomfortable spot too, so
just all around. Yeah, the second game was over, I
just turned off the.
Speaker 1 (03:17):
TV, so I like watching the trophy presentation and everything.
I just turned Yeah, I turned understandably though.
Speaker 2 (03:24):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (03:25):
Usher was great.
Speaker 2 (03:26):
She was really good.
Speaker 1 (03:27):
Give I thought really was.
Speaker 2 (03:29):
Yeah, Alicia Keys with the piano was amazing.
Speaker 1 (03:32):
Yeah, that was very outfit. Yeah, Chris came on so
many people.
Speaker 2 (03:37):
Definitely, I hit my demo, you know, and I'm like,
oh am I getting all now that Time show? Is
it targeting me? But yes, I thought I thought it
was cool. I put on the roller skates.
Speaker 1 (03:49):
I thought I thought that was cool too, and the
ground kind of moved with them too, so it was
it was cool.
Speaker 2 (03:55):
Yeah, I thought that was really cool.
Speaker 1 (03:57):
I give it a solid eight and a half out
of time. Yeah, I thought it was really good.
Speaker 2 (04:00):
I think people at first were like, oh why Usher,
Like what you know, he hasn't play anything out in
a while. Yeah, But I was like, he's a great performer.
Speaker 1 (04:08):
I think he's about to drop a new album here soon.
Speaker 2 (04:10):
Yeah, or like a residency too, yeah or something. So yeah, yeah, yeah,
I think you're right, He's got to be like one
of the top five dancers of all time too.
Speaker 1 (04:18):
All the time.
Speaker 2 (04:19):
He's amazing dancer. So yeah, I thought the performance was
really cool.
Speaker 1 (04:24):
I thought so too. It was fun to watch and
that I think that Super Bowl was the most ever,
the most televised event ever.
Speaker 2 (04:30):
Yeah, most watched events watched in the US. It was
only behind the Moon landing in the US. So yeah,
that's crazy.
Speaker 1 (04:38):
Yeah, that is crazy. Yeah really for CBS. It was
fun to watch. Well, Phil, Looking back on the week
prior to Sunday, we saw that head coach on pay
and he kind of made his rounds at Radio Row
in Las Vegas and he was on Katum Show up
in Adams too. Oh yeah, just talking about yeah, talking
about the off season, talking about the draft, the combine,
the free agency coming up, all of that. I know,
(04:59):
he talked about how draft meetings are starting here on Monday,
which was yesterday, and just kind of gearing gear in
all that up, getting ready for all that. You know.
Speaker 2 (05:08):
I think that when the Super Bowl ends, it's kind
of like, okay, that season, the twenty twenty three season
is over, like sort of officially now. Yeah, And so yeah,
I mean anytime Sean talks to anybody, you're sort of
paying attention to just see what he has to say.
And this is gonna be a busy offseason, I think
for the Broncos. Yeah, fell short of their goal last year,
(05:28):
so I think anytime you're in that situation, you're always saying, Okay,
there's gonna be changes. You got to, you know, make
some moves here to get better. Certainly, you know, all
the attention this offseason is going to be on the
quarterback position, but you know, this team has other things
that they need to accomplish this offseason as well, and
you know the Combine is coming up in a couple
(05:49):
of weeks in and they got to be prepared and
get ready, you know, to make sure that they make
the most of that week. They're certainly interviewing players and
knowing what you're looking for and just I think having
a better idea of what what the goals are for
this offseason. You know that that's certainly underway now for
the Broncos, and the college bowl games are all over,
(06:11):
you know, and so now you can really start getting
ready for the Combine, and so much takes place that week.
You know, the whole NFL world sort of gathers in Indianapolis.
They kind of gathering at the Super Bowl occasion, and
then you know, a couple of weeks later at the Combine.
So it's certainly going to be a busy off season
for the Broncos now as the past season is in
(06:34):
the past. Now you can turn all your sites to
the Combine and the draft and free agency, and yeah,
it never stops.
Speaker 1 (06:40):
It never stops. I know there's been so much talk,
so many rumors about whether the Broncos are going to
trade up, trade back pick A. But you know, Sean
was even asked about that too, and he said, hey,
we're not getting swept up at all the crazy Yeah,
I need to evaluate. I need to do my own
evaluation first.
Speaker 2 (06:57):
That's always happens, especially the quarterbacks in the draft processed,
like just like these guys get talked about so much
and nauseum, and then all of a sudden, guys where
you're like, oh, like say, for example, like Michael Pennix,
the Washington quarterback, Like after the college football semi final,
people were saying, Okay, he's not even gonna make it
(07:17):
through halfway through the first round. Right then, he doesn't
have the greatest championship game and then after the senior
ball now people are like, oh, he's certainly not a
first rounder, So like, okay, he's still the same player,
do you know what I mean? So like how did
he go out? Yeah? Exactly. So I think that like
you could just ride this wave and get caught up
(07:38):
in it and just get a little bit out of control,
I think, And I think for the Broncos and having
a guy like Sean who's been in the league for
so long helps having a guy like George Payton in
there too with him. I mean, you could tell just
by talking to George he's just so level, you know,
he's not an emotional up and down kind of a person.
(08:01):
So I think that's important that you trust what your
scouts have been doing all season, You trust the game
film that you watch, you trust what you know and
meaning in the meetings, and if you fall in love
with the player during that time, I think it's important
to like stick to your convictions, you know, and be like, no,
I got to trust the people who are my building,
(08:23):
trust what I've seen, not get caught up in this wave,
because especially the quarterbacks in the first round, people just
go on this roller coaster and you could go crazy.
I remember the year Baker Mayfield came out, like all
of a sudden, he became like the obvious number one choice,
when like the whole lead up to the draft it
was Sam Darnold. So like, there's just all these kind
(08:46):
of crazy moves, and I think you can get caught
up in and what the media is saying, this team's
training up, this team's not training up. I think I
will say. The thing that's exciting about Sean is that
you never really know that's what he's going to do,
you know, so much in the past with the with
New Orleans, with the Saints, he's moved up. Last year,
(09:07):
the Broncos moved up to take Marvion mim So with
the Broncos sitting at twelve, you're like, okay, if they
really wanted to go up, they might be able to
do swing that. So, like, nothing's never off the table,
I think. So it's just an exciting time, and especially
with somebody like Sean, who you know, likes to mix
(09:27):
things up. I had little spice to you know what
the mixing interesting, Yeah, exactly, so that that kind of
keeps everybody on their toes. But yeah, you can get
caught up in the in too much of the media circus,
I think.
Speaker 1 (09:39):
I agree, well, Phil, talking about the combine, I know
it's only what less than two weeks away at this
point now, and I know you're going to be there
in Indianapolis, but I'm most looking forward.
Speaker 2 (09:47):
To, Well what then, I've helped put out the list
of I think it's like three hundred and twenty one
invites all the prospects, so I you know, I think
that came out today he said, so h there's gonna
be a lot of players there. I think that more
than anything though, the first like day and a half
of the combine, when all the gms and all the
(10:08):
coaches talk, you learn some little tidbits here and there,
what kind of decisions they're going to be making with
regard to free agency. Little tidbits come out here and there.
I'm always interested to learn about that, especially teams like
in key spots in the draft or with some big
free agency moves coming up. I think that you're paying
attention to see what other teams are saying, what your
(10:31):
team is saying. You know, I think Sean's going to
meet the media there, Georgia will meet the media, So
you like you kind of learned some little things because
it's the first like official press conference they've had since
the end of the season.
Speaker 1 (10:43):
Presser, so it was a month and a half ago.
Speaker 2 (10:46):
Yeah, exactly, So you kind of learn a little bit
through that process. And then I think for the teams,
you I don't know, it's always hard to know how
much stock you put into what you're seeing out on
the field. People call it like with the underwear Olympics.
You know, they're just out there just playing against air.
You know, they don't have it's not really football, you know.
(11:08):
And I always think the interesting thing for quarterbacks. Some
quarterbacks are like, I'm not throwing at the combine because
they don't have the timing with the people who they're
throwing to. It's sort of like a laboratory, you know,
where some of them might say, Okay, I'm gonna wait
until my protray, I'm going to throw it to receivers
I'm comfortable with.
Speaker 1 (11:27):
I think that's smart.
Speaker 2 (11:28):
Smart. But then on the other side, you might want
a quarterback who's got that competitive spirit who says, I
don't care who I'm throwing to, I can get the
job done.
Speaker 1 (11:38):
Very valid point.
Speaker 2 (11:39):
I could go out there and I can sling it around.
Speaker 1 (11:41):
It doesn't matter, it doesn't matter.
Speaker 2 (11:42):
Give me the football and I'll show up and I
can play wherever, with whoever whatever. So there's always like
a balance there of like what would you do as
a prospect, you know? And then I think that the
meeting rooms are so important because there's so much more
that goes into being a good football player than just
you know, your forty time or whatever. I think fans
(12:03):
get caught up in the forty time a little bit
too much. To me, as long as you hit the
benchmarks for your position, as long as you're athletic enough.
If you're a good football player and you're athletic enough,
then you're gonna make it in this league. So I
don't know how much occupant into that, but I think
the meaning times it's hard because that even is such
(12:24):
a controlled space too, where Okay, they've been working with
their agents. Okay, if they ask you this, this is
what you say. If this is what you if they
ask you this, this is what you do. But I
think good teams can find a way to get the
prospects off balance a little bit, and then you learn
exactly and somebody like Sean too. I think is really
good at that where, you know, I think that he
(12:47):
can ask some good questions and then kind of just
get them more comfortable and more relaxed, get to know
them the real player. And I think that that part
is important too.
Speaker 1 (12:57):
Yeah, I completely agree, Phil. You mentioned it earlier. NFL
and AWL their list of prospects that are going to
be at the combine anyone specifically that you want to
see that you want to hear from it.
Speaker 2 (13:06):
I think the first thing I always do is like
put in, Okay, which buffs are going to be there?
Only one buff? Xavier Weaver, the wide receiver receiver. Yeah,
Xavier Weaver. So I I so he the only that's
my only buff there said so.
Speaker 1 (13:20):
Oh, that's kind of a bummer.
Speaker 2 (13:22):
That'll change next year. I think I think that'll change
next year. But so that's the first thing I do.
And then I think, I mean it's sort of set
up for just see the quarterbacks, you know what I mean,
that's what you want to do, So see if they
if they throw, if they don't throw, what they're sort
of what their goals are going to be there? And
then you know, those top wide receivers in the draft
(13:44):
you know, what what are their forty times going to be?
What are they going to be able to do? And
then I always think about the players who aren't invited.
You know, I tend to think, Okay, gosh, there's definitely
some really good football players who did not get invited
to the Combine, Like I remember, Philip didn't get invited
to the Combine, and you know, that just starts that
process of developing that chip on your shoulder, you know,
(14:08):
and then they they are like, Okay, I'm gonna go
all out of my pro day. So you know, I
always think about those players who didn't get invited, and
you know there's gonna be a couple of guys who
didn't get didn't make it that are going to be
good NFL players. So absolutely, that's what I sort of
always think about it like.
Speaker 1 (14:25):
That, Well, there's so much coming up, phil looking forward
to it, looking forward to the Combine and the rest
of the off season. Years A kicks off now that
the end of the NFL season is officially over.
Speaker 2 (14:34):
Yeah, most definitely. I think it's a uh, it's a
time where you know, there's a lot of buzz and
what's gonna happen with free agency. The NFL has really
done an amazing job of making it a year round. Yeah, so,
like you know, combine in other sports is like not
a big deal, but it's a big deal for the NFL.
You know, free agency, in the draft, and it's just
(14:55):
a lot of lead up and uh, you know, I
think for the Broncos there's some big decisions that need
to be made and so players in in the building,
free agents and draft. You know, you heard Sean talk
about that, just that this is a process where you
got to evaluate all these different things, and especially when
you fall short your goal. You know, I think the
(15:16):
Broncos really wanted to make the playoffs last year. A
lot of disappointment for the way that the season ended,
especially after that five game winning streak. So I think that,
you know, when the season doesn't end the way you
wanted to, you're excited to get back to work and say, Okay,
let's get working on this. Let's get back to back
to it to make next year better.
Speaker 1 (15:38):
So before we know it, the players are going to
be back in the building.
Speaker 2 (15:41):
It always goes by yeah, exactly, so the process under
way here.
Speaker 1 (15:46):
Well, feel appreciate you joining the show today. I appreciate
your insight.
Speaker 2 (15:48):
Always fun.
Speaker 1 (15:50):
That's going to do it for this week's episode of
Broncos Now Broncos Country. Thanks so much for tuning in.
I'll meet you right back here on the Broncos Podcast
Network in YouTube next week for another episode. See you
all then,
