Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, we made it to the end of the road,
our final road to the draft, because, thank goodness, it
is here this week. Because let me tell you, we've
talked about every little step of this road. We've done
infinity mock drafts, We've talked about a whole lot of prospects.
So now as we're here in this last week, these
last couple of days, even leading up to the draft,
we thought, what are some things that Bucks fans need
(00:21):
to know, need to think about. What have we learned
some of the kind of big themes, big picture ideas
going into this draft, and what are some things to
kind of pay attention to. So, first of all, reminder,
these are our picks for everyone at the moment, So
at the moment yep, of course can always change at
the moment, this is where we sit.
Speaker 2 (00:38):
So for you, Scott, what kind of is in your.
Speaker 1 (00:40):
Mind going into this week of some of those big things,
especially in all your years of covering this team, what
you've learned about this road at the draft.
Speaker 3 (00:45):
Yeah, we've covered a lot of topics. And then you
get to the end and you know you've gone through
a lot of smoke screens and stuff and you hear
these players rising and falling in draft stock. But I
think the thing that fans need to keep in mind
is that quarterbacks always almost always the big there's an
exception every rule. I think the Kenny Pickt draft of
a couple of years ago he was the only one
(01:06):
in the first round, and Malik Willison went all the
way in the third round. But most of them are
like last year. The last year was a bit of
an extreme with the six quarterbacks going in the top twelve,
which was unexpected. The first three going was not that
big of a surprise. Obviously, Michael PENNOCKX at eight surprised everybody,
and then you had Mike McCarthy and then Bo Nix
(01:31):
going twelfth. And the point is, when you start talking
about these quarterbacks that could go high on there's a
lot of question marks about guys like Shudur Sanders and
Jackson Dart. That's important for the Buccaneers and any other
team that clearly is not in the market for our
first round quarterback. So we want this phenomenon to happen again,
and I think that it will. Now the big camera
orders pretty much said a number one. I think the
(01:52):
big question mark is Shuder Sanders but even if he
drops a little bit, if he goes ninth or nineteenth
or something like that, that's still a to the Buccaneers.
And there's a lot of rumors lately that Jackson Dart
could make it into the first round, and so the
Bucks would support all of that. And even if some
of these guys don't go, the fact that in the
first round, the fact that they're getting a lot of
(02:13):
buzz for the top of the second round, like Tyler Schuck,
Jackson Dart, even Jalen will Row, that's good for the
Buccaneers for the second round pick. So just keep in mind,
if you're a betting man beat on the.
Speaker 2 (02:24):
Quarterbacks, it's always almost always happens.
Speaker 1 (02:26):
All right, what's our next idea, our next lesson here,
Professor Scott.
Speaker 3 (02:29):
But okay, when we started this road, did we ever
consider not taking the defensive player.
Speaker 1 (02:35):
It felt like every mock draft that we saw out there,
every discussion that was being had, it was almost just
a fore gone conclusion that, oh, the Bucks must be
taking a defensive And it's.
Speaker 3 (02:44):
Understandable considering they had let the fourth best offense in
the league last year, top five, and a lot of
categories and returning to every single starter. Yeah, and whereas
the defense struggled at times last year, and there were.
Speaker 1 (02:55):
Some more people left in free agency, more holes to
be filled.
Speaker 3 (02:58):
Popcially, it all made sense. And then Todd Bowles mentioned
something about receivers and offensive players at the owners meetings,
and then Jason light doubled down on that idea in
his pre pre draft press conference. And now even Bree
Dix put Matthew Golden and her last mock draft for
(03:18):
the Buccaneers in the first round. And so it's not
out of the question now if you ask me, I
would still be shocked if the Buccaneers went and receiver
in the first round, just because there's a lot of
really good prospects available on defense and areas of need
for the Buccaneers. And if I were the Buccaneers and
it got to the point where we had any or
several of the following of say Jade Baron, Donovan Azraku
(03:43):
and she had Campbell Steer still there at twenty one,
and a lot of the Rock drafts, you look at
at least one of those guys there. Personally, that's what
I would go with. I think the Buccaneers would love
to trade down a little bit because of how many
and I'm not even mentioning some other guys they probably
like like Maxwell Hairston the Kentucky cornerback. And so if
you could move back a little bit gain some draft
assets since they only have six picks to start with,
(04:06):
that would be ideal. I think the problem is, and
Jason Light's put some words to it the other day,
is that there may not be a lot of teams
wanting to move up. You got to have a partner, right,
So what you're hoping for maybe is that some of
these quarterbacks slide and people maybe want to jump up
a little bit.
Speaker 1 (04:21):
So try to snatch one of those. That's interesting. Okay,
what's our next idea here?
Speaker 3 (04:25):
Well, we just talked about it just a little bit.
Jason Light and the art of the deal Tristan.
Speaker 1 (04:31):
Murfs is always the first thing that comes to my
mind that that's like the I mean, talk about how
much that worked out and didn't have to necessarily give
up tons of stuff. So we've seen that Jason Light
doesn't seem like he does these like big moves all
the time the first round, yah, especially the first round,
but man like he has learned how to make this
little one one two spot jump really well.
Speaker 3 (04:49):
Yeah, I don't think he moves up a lot in
the first round. I would say these are some of
the trades. I would say about Jason Light's trades throughout
the years is that most of them are going if
their trades up, they're going after a specific player that
has fallen enough that now they're in range and like,
we just gotta make it. We got to give up
something just to make sure we get this guy and
(05:09):
he doesn't get one or two picks before. So you
saw that with a bunch of offensive linemen in recent years,
like I think even Ali mar Patt, Yeah, Cody Mouth maybe, no,
I don't know, remember for showing him Alex cap A
lot of these guys, we traded up a few when
they got close to us. And like you said, with
Tristan Wurf's the Bucks from fourteen, they moved up to
thirteen with something to go, Well, why would you need
(05:30):
to do that because obviously you don't think that team
is going to pick him, but other teams can try
trade and yeah, then there's the idea of trading down, and.
Speaker 2 (05:37):
Everyone loves to do that. Then that's the problem is
finding someone else.
Speaker 3 (05:41):
Somebody's gonna pull it off. But I yeah, yeah, but
there's probably six or seven teams that would love to
trade down right now in the second half of the draft,
and not all of them are gonna be able to
find partners. So, uh, you don't know if it can happen,
But I think it would be an ideal situation for
the Buccaneers, who have a lot of different ways they
could go on defense and pretty deep pool of prospects there.
Speaker 1 (06:01):
Yeah, but there's a lot of people you might be
happy with and therefore happy to trade down with.
Speaker 2 (06:05):
All right, Next up, big thing to keep.
Speaker 3 (06:07):
In mind, all right, remember this trap isn't all about
the first round. So the Buccaneers, as I said, I think,
will probably go for a defensive player. You could go
all defense in the first three rounds and not really
you know, I.
Speaker 1 (06:19):
Don't think anyone will be super upset with that. Yeah,
depending on what the positions are and who you get
at those spots. Yeah, I can see it being several
rounds worth of it, and no Bucks fan is going
to be upset about that.
Speaker 3 (06:29):
Maybe a receiver though in the second or third round.
So just a couple want to highlight a couple of
positions that the Buccaneers could target with picks fifty three
and eighty four. I think we'll see again at the end.
There's four positions I got highlighted here. There's cornerbacks. If
the Bucks don't take a cornerback in the first round,
and a lot of guys like Johnny Barry and Will
(06:50):
Johnson and Maxwell Harriston and Shavon Ravel and Tray a
must a lot of those guys are going or not.
Tray a couple guys you might want to consider, thinking
about our Kansas State's Jacob Parrish and old missus Trey
Amos more likely a second round pick for Trey Amos.
Uh Parish should probably more like a third round pick.
But there's a lot of good cornerbacks out there, which
(07:11):
is even though in my most recent mock drafts not
out yet, I gave a Shotty Baron, I still think
they might decide to go a different route in the
first round because there's a lot of cornerback deugh.
Speaker 1 (07:23):
And if anyone has been watching Scott and I for
the past ten years, say it with me at home.
Speaker 2 (07:28):
In the back, you can have.
Speaker 3 (07:31):
Too many cornerbacks quality.
Speaker 2 (07:32):
Cornerback quality cornerbacks.
Speaker 3 (07:34):
Yes, you gound that out again last year we did.
Speaker 2 (07:35):
We will find it out every year. They're proven you're
right every year.
Speaker 3 (07:39):
I think our coaches know that they are trying. Yeah. Absolutely,
Todd Bole said it.
Speaker 2 (07:42):
From every team thinks the same thing.
Speaker 3 (07:45):
It's not easy. It's not easy to find, develop and keep. Yes,
that's fair linebackers. If the Buccaneers don't say land Geh
Cambe in the first round, you got UCLA's Carston Swastinger,
who's interesting. You love to say his name.
Speaker 2 (07:57):
I don't say that name.
Speaker 1 (07:58):
I'm telling you if we draft him'm gonna have to
really work and that that is such a tongue twister
for me.
Speaker 2 (08:01):
I just end up staying freshing year.
Speaker 3 (08:03):
He only had one year as a starter last year.
Name once he gets here, just call him former walk
on because he was a former walk Sure, he only
had one year as a starter, but his film is
so good from that one year that he's a He's
a guy to keep an eye on. And then South
Clear is Demetrius Knight. Now, both of these guys are
more of your prototypical off ball linebackers than Gid. Campbell's
more of a twiner, almost or a multi position guy.
(08:26):
Also wide receiver. We were talking about that. I talked
about him once earlier on the road of the draft
Draft Iowa states, Jalen Nole really really fast, can play
on the outside and give you you know, that deep ball.
Also a little works out of the slot a lot
if you need him to. We have Chris Goblin, so
we probably don't need him to do that a lot.
But he's really willing to go over the middle very
quick and uh will take hits. He's aggressive, he's he's
(08:47):
he's a nice player to add. And I don't think
the Buccaneers, I mean the Buccaneers Jason light and Todd
Bowles have said out loud in the last month that
they would like you know, they're thinking about receiver. Yeah,
which is interesting, And I think that has a lot
to do with looking ahead.
Speaker 2 (09:03):
Yeah he can, Yeah, it makes sense.
Speaker 1 (09:05):
I mean, you know Mike Evans, Look, he probably could
play till he's eighty, but maybe not. You know that
won't and so how long do you have Mike Evans four?
Speaker 2 (09:12):
And the same thing. We still as much as we
all love Chris, so excited he's back.
Speaker 1 (09:16):
We don't quite know yet what that'll look like, and
then you know either way again, like they've already been
doing this for several years, you're gonna someday need to
start replenishing thinking about those future years. And if I
love that they are so big and that they now
have such a clear idea of the type of player
they want to, I am that man.
Speaker 2 (09:32):
And so if you find and I am that man, even.
Speaker 1 (09:36):
If maybe it's not quite your biggest need right now,
I think they have learned to see you get a
Chris Godwin, that is, you know, you get a Mike Evans,
that these guys who are incredible on and off the
field and can transform your franchise for years to come.
I don't think anyone's gonna be upset if you're finding
the next Chris or Mike. Yeah, even if you thought,
oh man, I really thought the share would go defense,
(09:56):
if they turn into a guy like that, you're very
okay with wherever you took them.
Speaker 3 (10:00):
I love that point. If I were redoing this before
the show, I would probably replace one of those with
your I am that man point, because that's a great point.
And when you talk about how do you choose between
if you want an ed rusher and how do you
choose between Mike Green if he's there, Shamar Stewart, Donovan Azraku,
James Pierce. If you knew which one the guys liked
(10:23):
as and I am that man guy, you would know
the answer straight up.
Speaker 1 (10:26):
Yeah, as much as all of us on the outside
are wayne all. This guy's tape, this guy's forty, this
guy's whatever. They know whether or not they think he's
that man, that's what they want.
Speaker 3 (10:34):
That's that's a very important part of their draft process.
And when we have Jason come down after making drop picks,
I guarantee you you're going to hear him say this
guy loves football. This guy yeah, you know all the
aspects of im.
Speaker 2 (10:49):
All right, we got one final thing to rerun.
Speaker 3 (10:51):
I was going to also mention as receiver, Stanford's Elick
elick I you Minar, that's not an easy one to
say either. And then d T because Jason, I know
we have Vitavea and we have Kalijahkansi, and we have
some depth at that position, but they love to add
to that spot. He loves to add to the trenches.
He picked it in the first round in three times
(11:12):
in recent years. So I would not be surprised at
all if even though it's maybe not considered one of
our top needs. And a couple guys that could be
there in the second round include Tennessee's Omar Norman Lott
and Texas A and M's Shamar Turner.
Speaker 1 (11:27):
All right, so now here we have it, the final
of the points on our final of the road to
the drafts.
Speaker 3 (11:33):
How do you get immersed in this draft? I mean,
if you're like us, you've been having fun with this
for months, doing mock drafts, doing these videos, reading articles,
reading other people's mock trafts, listening to podcasts. The draft
is such a big deal, such a big deal, and
you're probably going to tune in for the first round
on Thursday night starts at eight, probably goes till about midnight.
Bucks are picking nineteenth, so maybe ten thirty eleven, something
(11:57):
like that, but there's a lot more they're On Friday,
it starts at seven pm. Again, probably goes to about midnight.
The Buccaneers are picking number fifty three, as we see there.
Maybe by then they will picked up some additional draft
app assets in the second and third round, so that
handles rounds two and three. On Sunday, It starts at noon,
(12:17):
probably goes to about seven thirty and that's rounds four, five, six,
and seven. And you can watch all this on three
different networks. Pick every single pick on ESPN, ABC and
NFL Network. So there's lots of ways to keep on.
There's also lots of ways to stream in, listen to
it on podcasts, listen to it on like serious XM.
(12:39):
I'm sure you're sure you can figure all of that out.
But there's innumerable ways to file this draft. It could
be an extremely important draft for the Buccaneers who feel
like they are real contenders with a couple of things
to resolve in the depth chart, and if they can
do that to an extent like they've done in the
last couple of years with all these instant impact rookies
like from Yai Yai Dyabi to Tyke Smith, it could
(13:01):
be you know what puts them over the top. So
this is an extremely important weekend for the Buccaneers and
if you want to watch it all, you definitely can.
Speaker 2 (13:08):
I like it all right, Well, that is it man
road to the draft. We made it to the end.
Speaker 1 (13:11):
Now again next week, what we are going to do
is a bit of a draft recap. So I don't
know if that's continuing on the road or you turning
or what that means, but we got one more thing
to button it all the draft. Yes, after the draft,
coming back here to advent Health Training Center, that's what
it is. And so we will do a recap show
next week to tell you about all these new additions
to the crew. Can't wait to find out who they
are after all of our discussions. But thanks so much
(13:31):
for joining us on this road to.
Speaker 2 (13:33):
The draft this year.
Speaker 1 (13:34):
Enjoy it Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and we'll talk to
you next week.
