Speaker 1 (00:02):
I might not know much, but I know this much.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
It was really good to see the Cardinals back out
on that field. Phase three of OTA's we're talking offense
and defense both out there together, and we're going to
talk about who Connor, who's been winning the off season?
Who needs to pick it up? Because remember, you can't
win a job, but you can lose ground, and the
(00:25):
competition level has never been higher. Here in year three
of JG and Manti asin Ford all the above straight ahead,
it is Cardinals Cover two, Episode eight eighty seven, and
it starts now.
Speaker 3 (00:41):
Welcome to Cardinals Cover two.
Speaker 1 (00:43):
Who to Baker? What Heart? What rent? This guy's unbelievable.
Speaker 3 (00:47):
Cardinals Cover two is presented by Hyundai, proud partner of
the Arizona Cardinals and by Arizona Cardinals Podcast Visit Azycardinals
dot com slash podcast.
Speaker 2 (01:00):
He's in a ten half of five days in again
some more hurry magic.
Speaker 3 (01:04):
Whow here's Paul calvcright.
Speaker 2 (01:11):
We are most definitely not Craig Riolu who decided to
put the voluntary into voluntary offseason workout. Craig Griolu, Aaron Rodgers.
You know, the list really starts there in that order
Paul Calvc, Danny Sireg, Zach Gershman. Because it takes three
to replace Craig Rila.
Speaker 4 (01:28):
You just put Craig in the same bucket as Aaron Rodgers.
Speaker 2 (01:32):
You know, I don't want to profile these norcl guys,
but you know they sort of share some of that
same mentality, the lack of off season commitment.
Speaker 1 (01:39):
It really it goes for those guys.
Speaker 4 (01:41):
Craig told us he was going to Europe. Are you
saying maybe he's in a cave somewhere.
Speaker 1 (01:44):
I think it could be a darkness.
Speaker 4 (01:46):
Retreat, although we do know Craig has his phone because
he is staying on Twitter.
Speaker 5 (01:49):
Well, that's where the light comes from. It's the reflection
of the screen.
Speaker 2 (01:53):
I have to raise my game here. I mean the
level of knowledge already right now. So okay, I'm gonna come.
I'm gonna come hard and heavy right here. Do you
you know where the Darkness Retreat took place? Do you
know the setting? The sight of the Darkness Retreat? Because
it is a year round I don't if you use
the word resort, but you can go and get your
own darkness retreat as a civilian.
Speaker 1 (02:15):
I think it's just pretty dark. I don't know where it's.
Speaker 2 (02:16):
At Ashland, Oregon, Southern Oregon, right across the border, just
south of med for Oregon. I know because I lived
there for almost two years my first job out of school.
Speaker 1 (02:24):
So there you go. Maybe I'm guilty by association.
Speaker 5 (02:27):
How many darkness retreats did you do then? And there's
can't immerse yourself in the culture without taking part in it.
Speaker 2 (02:32):
There's thankfully it didn't exist back then, but they did
have the Shakespeare Festival. So the two of you, you
need to get cultured up. Okay, Danny does getting cultured.
You guys need to get cultured up in the Shakespeare Festival.
Google it up Ashland, Oregon. Why am I talking about
that one? We actually have a lot to talk about
at OTA's let's see here takeaways.
Speaker 1 (02:50):
Let's go around the horn, Zach.
Speaker 2 (02:52):
You are out there, from what you saw and what
you can report on. What can you tell us?
Speaker 5 (02:57):
Of course that's the tricky part is what you can
on it. So the first twenty twenty five minutes of practice,
and once again to echo how you started this, Paul,
it's voluntary. So there were a handful of guys that
were not there. Josh Sweat was not there. Kalai's campbell
was not there, Yell Defroholt was not there. Dalvin Thomlinson
and a handful of others. Walter nolan Id, the Cardinal's
(03:17):
first round pick, was working off to the side without
a helmet. He was with some trainers. But what I
can say based off what we saw in the field,
Darius Robinson looks fast at that defensive line room. That's
typically where we're positioned, is right underneath that tree, right
by the defensive lineman. And Justin Jones was out there.
He looked really solid. But coach Deebo I think was
the biggest winner because of just how active he is,
(03:39):
how loud he is, how vocal he is with the players.
He had his cleats on and it was definitely in
the trenches with him.
Speaker 4 (03:44):
A different vibe close up washing the defensive line practice.
Something that was interesting right in front of us, excuse me,
was defensive coordinator Nick Rowlis spent a lot of time
with those defensive lineman. That's not to say he doesn't
normally do that, or to say that once we left
that he didn't move around by any means. However, I
(04:04):
do think that is telling of you've got a lot
of new faces, You've got some players returning who didn't
play a lot of games. You've got a new coach,
and the man in charge of the defense definitely was
keeping an eye there. Justin Jones returning from a triceps
injury last year. He looked good. Balone Nichols, another name
that was not working out with the group, was off
(04:25):
on the side where trainers alongside right tackle Jonah Williams.
We're at the point where you want to get excited,
but you can't get too crazy, right Like, it's exciting
when you're seeing some offensive line combinations and then you remember, okay, well,
Evan Brown, who's played left guard, was taken steps at
center because they didn't have their starter yield to fro
hold out there on the field. So you kind of
(04:46):
have to take everything with a grain of salt. Elijah
Jones is another name that was out on the practice field.
Missed his entire rookie year with a foot heel injury.
Last year. We only saw him for a few practices.
He didn't seem to be wearing any sort of brace
or extra gear, so that's good to see. And you
had will Johnson the rookie out there, and he looked
(05:07):
perfectly fine. And just for anybody who's seeing footage or whatever,
seems like Johnson already wears a sleeve on his right leg,
So if you see that in the future, doesn't seem
like that would be anything to get concerned about with
the need that he was dealing with in college.
Speaker 1 (05:22):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (05:22):
I had to do a double takeway twenty eight again.
Oh yeah, Elijah Jones just because and right away you notice, man, he.
Speaker 1 (05:28):
Is a tall corner. Yeah, it's one of the big
reasons they drafted him in round three year ago. He
is a legit six' two.
Speaker 5 (05:34):
CORNER i was talking with him a little bit during
the offseason and he said that he Liked Marvin Harrison.
Junior Like Darius, robinson has lived in the facility. Rehabbing
he came back for a few practices last season and
then ultimately they kept him on injured reserve after they
opened up his, window not activating him to the fifty
three man. Roster but he looks good out. There and
right now that cornerback room with Seaw Murphy bunting being
(05:57):
officially placed on THE nfi, list because that's happening. Now
you have to rely on your quote unquote veteran cornerbacks
in the. Room being the third year guys With Garrett,
Williams Darlink, thomas you have to expect so much From
max mellan. In even Though Elijah jones was not out
on the, field he was still in the. Building he
was still around the guys to understand what those meeting
rooms are. Like, now it's just going to be a
(06:19):
little bit of a different. Approach paul with.
Speaker 2 (06:20):
It and, Look Max, MELTON i thought had a strong
finish to last. Year really curious to see what he looks,
like what sort of reviews he gets from the. COACHES
i ASKED jg earlier today just about his assessment Will
johnson being a perfect scheme, fit and he just mentioned
some of the things that he.
Speaker 1 (06:37):
Did he knew.
Speaker 2 (06:38):
What Drew stan echo this as well on a Recent
Red sea. Report Wink martindale is defensive coordinator In. Michigan
is known for HAVING nfl level defensive schemes really, advanced really,
complicated and if you're able to master, that and it
was his second or third defensive coordinator in His michigan,
career then obviously he has THE iq and he has
(06:59):
the football, Knowledge SO i think all these things give
him an, advantage enhance the odds That Will johnson can
compete from day one to be cornerback, one especially now
in the absence OF smb for the rest of the.
Year SO i think all those things, combine the cornerback
room is just wide open right. NOW i think in
terms of a, Competition Starling thomas is an absolute, fighter
(07:23):
just the fact you know he started twenty two games
the last two. Years and THEN i mean there's a
legit half dozen corners WHO i think from the outside
to the, inside can make a run at a starting
spot by the time you get at the end of,
camp And i'm guessing all those corners are going to
get some significant snaps in the three preseason, games.
Speaker 4 (07:43):
Probably more so than we have seen in previous. Years
it's interesting because where we stand right now is it's
hard for you to argue or feel like you wouldn't
have a final roster that would Have, Johnson thomas and.
Melt you can only carry so many, cornerbacks especially with
(08:03):
the discussion we've had throughout the offseason of are they
going to carry a few extra defensive linemen given the
bodies and the money they have put into that position
room this. Offseason you have so much youth and still
talent in the cornerbacks room THAT i wonder are you
going to keep all three Of, Johnson melton And thomas
because you do want to absolutely keep the best players
(08:25):
you have on this team and players that are going
to give you the best chance to win. Games you've
also allocated a lot of draft capital and money and
attention into some of these younger cornerbacks that you would
imagine The cardinals want to. Develop so that is going
to be an exciting position battle of where is somebody
like Key Trew clark in his? Progression what do The
(08:48):
cardinals have In Elijah jones and considering he didn't see
the field at all as a rookie and adjusting, there
and you bring in these players to have a room
right now with eleven guys in that, Room it's it's
exciting because the opportunity is there to fight for a.
Speaker 1 (09:03):
Spot so It's phase.
Speaker 2 (09:05):
Three offense and defense can be on the field, together
but dal shalt not compete one on one against each.
Other not yet mandatory mini. Camp you can still go
receivers Against DB's right and the REASON i bring that.
Up if you're play in the, trenches guess, What you're
gonna have to wait until camp to truly make an.
Impression but if you're a corner or a receiver and
(09:25):
you get the mandatory mini, camp, yeah there's gonna be
opinions formed by the. Coaches can you stick with the?
Receiver If Max milton is getting out there and he's
Blanketing Marvin Harrison, junior or If Will johnson is keeping
up with A Greg dortch in, space then you're gonna
make a positive.
Speaker 5 (09:40):
Impression And Jonathan gannon said that this time of year
it's funny because you want to see who has the
advantage of the offense or the, defense And Jonathan gannet's
has a defensive. Guy you always feel like this time
of year that the offense has the advantage because when
you're doing these, drills you don't have the defensive backs
that are gonna be pressing the wide. Receivers you can't
fully get that until you put the pads on at
training camp and you're out At State Farm. Stadium same
(10:02):
thing with the offensive and defensive. Line you can only
do so much work when it comes to going against the.
Pads the, sleds whatever it. Is when we do get
out there At State Farm, stadium will definitely have a
better idea of what this.
Speaker 1 (10:15):
Is going to look.
Speaker 5 (10:15):
Like AND i think it goes all it goes all.
Around it's an exciting time Because Jonathan gannon, said it's
the closest thing you're going to get to real football
as of like this point of the. Year but it's
an exciting time because you get to just see the
guys put on their, helmets be back out on the
grass running. Around you get to see the different body.
TYPES i, mean a guy Like Dante, stills he pointed,
out seem to be one of those players that lost
(10:37):
a lot of that body fat and looks really lean
but also really.
Speaker 1 (10:41):
Strong just all. Around it's.
Speaker 5 (10:43):
Exciting i'm sounding like a handful of players right now
that are just echoing their. Excitement but when all is
said and, done it's just a matter of doing the
mundane details now and turning those into successful things that
will translate come training.
Speaker 4 (10:57):
Camp it's interesting because watching the two sides of the
ball feels like vastly different things we are looking. For
the offense has such consistency from last year with the
players and the players that showed up that we're seeing
out on the, Field so it's a little bit different
of with the exception of maybe some interior offensive, lineman
(11:19):
which we're not really going to get answers this point
in the, offseason, Right Like Calvin beacham who's been playing
thirteen fourteen years isn't, here, Right those are things we're
gonna have to wait until training. Camp offensive line is
really the only position where you are keeping an eye
on what the depth chart could really come out to
be wide receiver a, little but the offense is more
or less set, right maybe who's going to be your BACKUP.
(11:41):
Qb the defense is a completely different. Story is every
position you can go through a battle of a veteran
or a younger player or two new veterans that have
been brought. In it's incredibly, exciting not to say that
it's boring watching the, offense it's just it's very different
stories of what you are looking for on both sides
of the, ball given how differ they are compared to
(12:01):
this time last.
Speaker 2 (12:02):
Year that is where my eye immediately went on offense
was to INTERIOR o line AND i, Looked, Okay Isaiah
adams and from a, Distance i'm, like has he been
winning the off? Season what does he look? LIKE i
apologize in Advanced Isaia. Adams what do you look like
from the waist? Down were you in the squad? Rack
what CAN i assess from?
Speaker 1 (12:19):
Here not? Much let me use my new phone to zoom.
Speaker 2 (12:21):
In not much? Help what AM i getting over? Here
and then that's When danny elbowed me in the ribs and,
said wait a, Minute Evan brown is the center Because
yeldfrohold isn't. Here so it was kind of fifty two
card pickup on the interior. Line BUT i still think
there is going to be a, battle AND i still
Think Hayden connor is going to be evaluated and given
(12:42):
every opportunity to compete for a starting guard.
Speaker 1 (12:46):
Spot that's just.
Speaker 4 (12:47):
Me you find a. Start see to, me WHEN i
hear that of a sixth round pick and you've got
veterans and you've got consistency on that offensive line for last,
YEAR i can understand if you want to say he's
fighting for a spot for backup guard guard of someone
else on this, roster or maybe if they Envisioned John
gaines as a guard slash, center that's where his competition
Is it still feels too early to commit to the
(13:10):
fact That Hayden, connor who we really haven't seen and
really won't get a good look At chill training, camp
is fighting for a starting.
Speaker 5 (13:17):
ROLE i think that the roster that we saw in
the game against the offensive line roster that we saw
against The New England patriots is going to be the
starting roster where you have right Tackle Joanah, williams left
Tackle Paris Johnson, junior and then you know from the
from the left, side you Have Evan guard at left,
guard yell Defro hold at, Center Isaiah adams at right.
GUARD i think that that's what you hope is the,
(13:38):
case because we talk about That kannuit there were so
many different lineups that they had because of the injuries
that the offensive line unit. Faced if you're able to
build that coninuity in that, consistency that's something that's going
to be. Important With Joanah williams working off to the
side right, now you're not really going to have that
in terms of the all five on the offensive. Line
BUT i think it's really exciting to See Isaiah adams
(14:00):
at right guard because from a distance he did look really.
Solid it was great to See Paris Johnson junior back out.
There kind of reminds you how big he actually is
when you get to see him next to all the
other offense. Linemen But Hayden connor has a, shot as
do all The day three. Picks Cody simon has a
great opportunity to compete for that green dot. Role Denzel
burke is going to have to claw his way through
(14:21):
that cornerback room that we, discussed and Then Keaton. Crawford
he shows why special teams mean so much to This
Arizona cardinals. Team But Hayden connor is not somebody to.
Speaker 1 (14:29):
Be slept on.
Speaker 4 (14:30):
Something. Though to keep an eye on the fact That
williams was working off to the side is where is
he at in his rehab? Process that timeline not something
we will likely get an answer for from the head. Coach,
however as we start to get through these, offseason these
last handful of, workouts is that's the, question because If,
williams let's, say is not ready to, go are you
(14:52):
relying on the Veteran Calvin beacham or are you going
to put your trust in your faith into your draft.
Pick And Christian, jones who only saw a limited amount
of snaps near the end of last.
Speaker 2 (15:02):
Season, Yeah Jonah, williams the target date Isn't july twenty
fifth or whenever the start of camp is going to.
Be It's september. Seventh it's week one In New. Orleans his,
experience he just needs to get. Healthy and To danny's,
point it's only when you get healthy that you can
truly make those gains in the weight, room get regular
season ready during your offseason. Workouts how much of his
(15:23):
workouts have those been curtailed because he had an earlier
injury to start the. Year, so, okay where's he?
Speaker 1 (15:29):
At we don't.
Speaker 2 (15:31):
Know they do Have kelvin beacham Now Christian. Jones without
Either beach Or Jonah, williams you Had Christian jones at right.
Speaker 1 (15:38):
Tackle that's.
Speaker 2 (15:39):
INTERESTING i think that room is loaded enough now Where
Christian jones is going to have To he's going to
have to show up and show out in year two
to be assured of a spot in the final fifty.
Speaker 1 (15:48):
Three when you.
Speaker 5 (15:49):
Draft a, guy you don't want to have to cut
your fifth round. Pick you, know right When september hits
when you have to trim it down to the fifty
three man, roster but you were hoping to See jones
was not going to start last, year regardless of the
injury that he. Had there was never a world where
he was going to be out on the field with
the fifty, three you, know starting in that case with
(16:11):
the with The Arizona cardinals. Offense but you want to
see what you have for him in the. Future he
was going to be a developmental, piece AND i think
from the Conversations i've had with, him he's talked about
how he's worked so much throughout the offseason and last
year was really a. Blur he had a severe foot.
Injury If i'm not, mistaken it was a lower leg,
injury and he had to go through a lot of
rehab and then once he got his, opportunity it was
(16:34):
in place Of Jonah williams and Then Jackson, barton who
also ended up getting injured last, year so he was
thrown into the. Fire AND i think something Johnathangan and,
said and it wasn't in relation To Christian, jones but he,
said the best way to learn is by having the,
reps and the best way to learn from those reps
is by having bad. Reps so you could actually learn
from those and not to say That Christian jones had
bad reps in the game against The Los Angeles rams
(16:55):
or the game against The San francisco forty nine ers
at the, Finale but at least he had some tape
to go off.
Speaker 2 (17:01):
Of, Right let's go back to your first, impression your first.
Takeaway what was the name you, Said Darius. Robinson we
learned a few things when he met the. Media one
he went on a recruiting trip To minnesota when he
was a high, scorer and his d line coach was
actually a player for The Golden, Gophers winston D latibou dare.
Speaker 1 (17:20):
The third that was.
Speaker 4 (17:21):
Impressive, dude, again.
Speaker 1 (17:23):
Coach dibo once you nail, it you don't go.
Speaker 2 (17:25):
Back it's sort of like at the, combine when you
run a forty and you nail, it you don't run
the second. One So i'm not attempting the pronunciation, Again,
prode how about the fact that Coach debo was wearing
cleats out. There it's just his energy was a whole different.
Dynamic you can see why he's a good fit Under Jonathan.
GANNETT i, mean you want, energy Coach. Debo but then
(17:46):
to your, Point zack About Darius robinson just in the
mundane drills are what you consider, routine everyday. Drills the
speed with which the velocity with which he was generating
and let's just say a player would goes maybe not
your mark to make the final fifty, three and then
D robin go right after.
Speaker 1 (18:05):
Him it was night and. Day you don't need me
be a professional talent evaluator to see the difference for.
Speaker 5 (18:11):
Yourself the explosiveness that you see when you Watch Darius,
robinson even when it is against just a, pad it
is truly. Remarkable and that's when you could tell the
difference between a first round pick and a first round
talent versus everybody else in that defensive line.
Speaker 1 (18:26):
Room just the.
Speaker 5 (18:26):
Speed and once again we weren't able to See Walter
nolan the third out there because he was working off
to the side with the, trainers But i'd be very
interested to see how they line up against each, other.
Yep and just in terms of their, speed the quick
twitch that they played the game, with their. Explosiveness BUT
i love with Coach, debo it's not just him wearing the,
quets which we were talking about on the side, There,
paul just how. Encouraging he was as. Well there were
(18:48):
so many guys that are on that borderline if they're
gonna make the fifty three or if they're potentially gonna
have to get the daunting tap on the shoulder Come
august to say, hey go up To manias And forts
office and bring your iPad with you or Your Microsoft.
Surface it's so fascinating because after every single TIME i
think about guys Like Anthony, GOODLOW. Pj mustard For Elijah,
(19:10):
simmons after every single drill they turned back around to
Coach debo and he was automatically giving them instruction right
there on the. Field you don't have to go back
to the. Tape you get to have that instruction and
that coaching right there on the. Field and then he
had him do it. Again in the past you might
have seen him again in the back of the. Line
now he, said you're doing it, again and you're going
right after.
Speaker 4 (19:29):
It that was the key is let's find the mistake
or WHAT i want you to, improve get a feel
for what it, is and then let's do it again
so that that's what feels comfortable for.
Speaker 5 (19:38):
YOU i, think what's So i've been trying to get
at this When i've been asking questions To john again
and a handful of the players about the unique factor
you have with a coach coming in from college to
THE nfl and how they're going to be transitioning to
that position. ROOM i THINK i saw it today because
of just the way that it wasn't, instructing it was.
Speaker 1 (19:57):
Coaching it was.
Speaker 5 (19:58):
Teaching it wasn't this is what you, do go do,
it this is why you do. It coach deebo is
breaking it. Down And i'm sure it'd be the same
exact thing with Coach Justin frye over there in the
offensive line, room but that's where you could really see
the difference and the players relate to, him AND i
think it's something that's so impressive when you have a
coach that has no problems throwing on their. Cleats Because
Darius robinson, said you could tell he's going through it with,
(20:20):
you and that means.
Speaker 2 (20:21):
Something once, Again Kalis campbell is eleven years older than
Coach debo for those who weren't, Aware and as far
As Darius robinson, goes it was pointing when he told
the media And i'm looking at the quote, HERE i
jotted it down roughly that last year was quote the
hardest year of my, life but the best.
Speaker 1 (20:39):
Year of my.
Speaker 2 (20:39):
Life in the same, year he, SAID i definitely felt the,
lowest BUT i also felt the.
Speaker 1 (20:44):
Highest so obviously.
Speaker 2 (20:46):
Losing his mother mid, season the injury that robbed him
of what thirteen games or well less than, that and
then the fact That Darius robinson was also a first
round pick after only having played high school ball two
years and then three years after, that you're a first
round pick in THE. Nfl so those highs and those,
Lows but maybe most revealing is when he said towards
(21:09):
the end of the interview, session he, said you know,
what in, camp my tape was, hot and my regular
season tape the final six games was, cool MEANING i
was proud of the tape and the film THAT i
put out In. August and then WHEN i saw at
the end of the, season wasn't quite Me AND i.
Speaker 1 (21:24):
Think we'd all agree with.
Speaker 2 (21:26):
That what he looked like in, CAMP i mean, EVERYONE i,
MEAN i fully expected him to be a Starter week
one Of buffalo before he went down with injury, midweek
and by the end of the year you're, like, well,
yeah he's not quite one hundred.
Speaker 4 (21:40):
Percent that doesn't surprise me though by camp he had
had the rookie. Offseason he was having a lot of
good opportunities and reps throughout training camp and looked very.
Good so to then have that injury as a, rookie
that's what's. Key when he came back late in the
season and only played the final six, games he's not
coming back having a true foundation and experience playing in
(22:03):
AN nfl game and making sure that he is up
to speed on the playbook and the changes that have
been made from what he was physically doing on a
field all the way back four five months. Prior that's
a tough, transition and when you're talking about rookies through
a regular, season it is about that six to seven
maybe eight first games where you're, Saying, okay you've got
(22:25):
your legs under. You now you've adjusted to the speed
a little bit. Better let's try and see a little bit.
More So robinson didn't have that full. Opportunity it seems
like it's a great combination of where he is right,
now where he still has that chip on his shoulder
of wants to go out and prove he is deserving
of that first round, pick especially since he didn't have
(22:45):
a full rookie, Season but now on the other, side
he's got the, confidence he's got the, foundation and he's
also added some. Muscle so it seems like the best
of both. Worlds where it doesn't feel like a true
year two for the Defensive i'm in more year one
and a, Half but it sounds like mentally he's got
the right attitude for it and the desire to go
(23:07):
out and prove what he can. Do but he's got
a little bit more foundation physically in this playbook and
also in his.
Speaker 5 (23:13):
BODY i think you hit on the keyword being. Confidence
when he sat there in front of the, media it
was very reminiscent of one of his first few times
speaking in front of the, media just the excitement that
he had talking about. Football and when you go speak
to him last, season he still had the smile on his.
Face you can that smile does not, fade but you
could tell it was it was wearing on him a little,
(23:34):
bit all the stuff that he had to go through
with his mom, passing with the injury that he, had
moving to a brand new, city when you're away from
your from your, family he, well he mentioned it maybe
three or four times during the press. Conference just his
upbringing being From michigan and then going To missouri in
your first, year.
Speaker 1 (23:50):
You don't have.
Speaker 5 (23:51):
That he wasn't able to slowly go into it because
he had so much happening all at. Once but when
he sat, there it was the. Confidence there was a
moment where he was talking about his, offseason playing in
his preparation and all the different things that he was.
Doing and it trotted back my memory too when he
had His draft night press conference and he was talking
about his routine going into a game week and just
(24:11):
breaking it. Down you get to see that that's not
just the, smile but the happiness behind it because it
means something to him now that he's back on the
football field and he gets to have that fresh.
Speaker 2 (24:21):
Slate, yeah WHEN mani AND jg talk about looking for
players who are all ball At Darius, ROBINSON i, mean
you know that's evidence right, there That draft night breakdown
of his film.
Speaker 1 (24:31):
Work it's. Ridiculous here's the other.
Speaker 2 (24:33):
THING i was cleaning videot on my, phone new phone
by the, way quick, flex AND i was cleaning videout
and there.
Speaker 1 (24:39):
Was a, scuffle a, kerffuffle all.
Speaker 2 (24:42):
Right there was a skirmish in the dog days of
camp last, year AND i forget it was a couple
of randos who got, caught but THE d line AND
o line they came, together, okay and somebody shoved one
of THE d linemen and D rob got triggered. Instantly
(25:02):
and if you look and you zoom in on.
Speaker 1 (25:04):
The, video and it was. Tough it was this is
my old phone, now but you zoom. In De rob
jacked the dude and just shoving them all the. WAY i,
mean when he got, Mad you're, like whoa back?
Speaker 2 (25:14):
Off And i'm curious that he gets in that groove
because what did you tell the media at the end
of last. Season the first two or three games he,
played it was kind of chicken with your head cut.
Off gap integrity wasn't.
Speaker 1 (25:25):
There he was.
Speaker 2 (25:26):
Hyperventilating someone give him a brown bag on the. Sideline you,
know he's just a little out of his. Element he's
too calm. Down play the, game, Man your gap plays
will come to. You you don't have to seek and
destroy everything out on the. Field and then he revealed
that is And i'm looking at it. HERE i, Mean i'm,
shocked too. Bad this is audio only because if this
is a video. Podcast you'd see how poly pencil neck
(25:48):
is winning the off. Season but there was a weightlifting
term dexa. Scan then he threw out there AND i
looked this. Up dual ENERGY x ray absorbed tome of tree.
Scan it can be a valuable tool for, weightlifters providing
detailed info about body, composition including muscle, mass bone, density
and body fat. PERCENTAGE i CHECKED gpt that just for, You,
(26:08):
zach BECAUSE i Know google isn't a thing. Anymore and
your your demo and so his decks of scan results my, Demo,
danny he went after my gro we're off was off the,
hook and so that's. CURIOUS i gotta do some more
digging on the whole decks of scan, thing because that's
that's new to.
Speaker 1 (26:23):
Me AND i guess that sounds.
Speaker 4 (26:24):
FUN i want to have that. Done what's my bone?
Speaker 1 (26:27):
Density that's, right you go in.
Speaker 2 (26:29):
There you, actually on second, thought what's that bone body fat? Percentage,
WELL i THINK i draw the line right. There actually
things you don't need to, know so, uh but think about. This,
Okay i've got a question for. You at what point
of the season give me the over? Under and when
The cardinals starting defensive line Is Dalvin thomlinson flanked By
(26:50):
Darius robinson And Walter nolan.
Speaker 1 (26:52):
The Third.
Speaker 2 (26:54):
Tomlinson in the two first. ROUNDERS i say they break
that out week four against the stink And seahawks in prime.
Time that's that's your starting defensive.
Speaker 1 (27:02):
LINE. O i.
Speaker 4 (27:05):
LIKE i like those. Three that's the thing is this
is those two. NAMES i don't doubt Of robinson And
tomlinson come week one or in your, case week, four
having a starting. Role Walter nolan the. THIRD i just
really haven't seen. Much, yes first round pick right showed
great things At Ole. Miss we don't know what it
is until we're gonna hear from the head coach next.
(27:26):
Week at this, point he's now starting working off on
the side with the. Trainer doesn't necessarily mean it's anything, major,
right but what is the progression throughout off season in
camp going to look? Like and not only how well
is he? Playing how well is Kalay Is campbell? Playing
how well Is Dante stills OR. Lj collier Or Justin?
Jones If jones looks like the player they wanted him
(27:49):
to be if he had been healthy all last, Year
it's it's not just a matter of Has nolan earned
a starting? Role is has he earned that more than
the four or five other players who have been here
and have experienced more than they. Have it's.
Speaker 2 (28:03):
Twofold it is amazing for two veteran guys who are
paid pretty darn good, money pretty pretty good, Money Ball
nichols And Justin, jones they're almost virtual unknowns in twenty
twenty five based on the fact they played a combined nine.
GAMES i, mean for two established free agents who were
(28:23):
rewarded by the team and brought into the, fold where
do they figure into the depth chart this? Year is
one of them even in? Jeopardy probably, not because a
guaranteed money and the salary cap consequences probably wouldn't be
worth it and wouldn't make that much sense from a financial.
Standpoint but once, again The cardinals of Broken camp each
of the last two years was six six defensive, linemen
(28:45):
and there are at least eight legit guys who could
be on ANY nfl.
Speaker 4 (28:47):
Roster it seems likely where we stand right. Now if
it's reminding me of the conversation we had last year
about running, backs right and we were, saying how on
earth do you not keep you don't need five running?
Backs do you keep? Winning The cardinals ended up Having
Michael carter end up on their practice, Squad but now
the conversation has become that with defensive, line so do
The cardinals have the flexibility looking at dbi's whether that's
(29:10):
one less, safety one less, cornerback right it's where we
stand right. Now it's how do you only take six
defensive lineman based on who's in that?
Speaker 5 (29:18):
Room it's it's VERY i want to go back to
something you just said, There paul About Justin jones Of
Blall nichols feeling like complete unknowns going into the, season
because that does feel like it's the case amongst us
as the talking. Pundits BUT i do Think johnthagannon's always
very intentional with his. Words he, doesn't you, know like
to hide things too. Much as a. Coach he was
(29:40):
always going to have the coach, speak you, know in
his back. Pocket but every single time we talk about
the defensive line, room he always brings those whose guys back.
Up he always, says don't forget about. Them AND i
think that that could be a coach defending his players
because he might realize that they're kind of the unknowns
in terms of the eyes of the media and the fan.
Base but with that being, said there was a reason
(30:03):
why he brought those guys in to begin.
Speaker 1 (30:05):
With last.
Speaker 5 (30:05):
Year those were the free agency splash moves of twenty twenty,
four so he saw something in. Them then back then
he saw something in terms of them being able to
Help ring Along Darius. Robinson nobody could ever expected twenty
twenty four to go the way that it did for
the three of. Them but with that being, SAID jg
sees something in those two. Guys it's just going to
(30:25):
be the the roster configuration of it. All that's what's
going to be, fascinating all.
Speaker 2 (30:31):
Right Then Drew petsen spoke with the media AND i
went back through it real, quick and near the top
of the press, conference here Comes Zach gershman off the
top rope with a big, question big big question About
Marvin Harrison. Junior something we've talked. About finally somebody asked, It,
zach was a, man take us through THE q and THE.
Speaker 1 (30:49):
A what was the?
Speaker 5 (30:50):
QUESTION i, asked you just do well out there for
a six Second Marvin Harrison.
Speaker 2 (30:54):
Junior and we've discussed this and how many different platforms
over how many different. Weeks How marvin told the media
at the end of last, season he kind of sort
of broke a string of games and then in week
seventeen and eighteen a a couple of productive Games division,
Games rams And. Niners and what Did marvin tell the.
Speaker 5 (31:13):
Media marvin told the media that he Felt Drew petsing
drew up a handful of different play designs intended just for,
him and it was it was different motions that he
used in in the game against The Los Angeles. Rams
both games against The, RAMS i, mean the first one
against The Los Angeles rams in week, two the off schedule.
Speaker 1 (31:31):
Played With Kyle.
Speaker 5 (31:32):
Murray the sixty yard touchdown that wasn't actually meant For
Marvin Harrison junior is part of the reason why his
stats went over the one hundred plus threshold and how
he got his second touchdown in that. Game but in
the game in week seventeen On saturday night Against La,
rams you got to See Marvin Harrison junior more involved
in the offense a lot of pre snap motions and
he pointed that out towards The i'm pretty sure it
(31:53):
was his exit meeting with the media that's when he
said to everybody THAT i was used a little bit.
Differently we haven't got to speak to offensive Cornair Drew,
Petsingsen SO i asked him exactly that what did he
notice from his times and he was saying How marvin performed,
well he progressed. Well but now they're going to year
number two and this is what the offense as a.
Whole you're able to dive deeper into. Things and that's
(32:15):
something That marvin even spoke, about how a dig rout's
no longer just a dig. Route it's looking at the defensive,
formation where's the safety at the, linebackers and being able
to diagnose all that while still running the, route not
just going through the motion of.
Speaker 1 (32:29):
It SO i.
Speaker 5 (32:29):
Do, expect And drew said that it's SOMETHING i would
likely continue to grow throughout the offseason with not Just
marvin but the entire offense as they're going into year
number three. Together but it's exciting and encouraging that they
started to notice something different In Marvin Harrison junior's game
and that they felt comfortable enough with putting more on
his plate towards the back end of the.
Speaker 2 (32:50):
Season, yeah there was an analytic that came out recently
and assessed the play of receivers across the, league And
Marvin Harrison junior was bottom five in terms of in.
Motion DeAndre hopkins was near the. Bottom we know that
from his years, here so it was. Interesting and the
other Thing Drew petsen told You zach was, yes we
(33:12):
did see more motions towards the end of the. Year
so is that in play for the course of this.
Season is that something that they instituted they, Liked we're
gonna see a more steady die to that, Perhaps BUT
i think that is interesting put him. In but it's
on a rookie to learn all the different. Spots you
have to learn the different receiver positions and what route
(33:33):
you're running after different. Spots and, oh by the, way
what you see pre snap from a coverage is not
where you're gonna see post. Snap so a receiver has
to be able to read the defense just like a
quarterback in a lot of. Ways AND i think that's
What marvin was driving at when he was talking to the.
Speaker 5 (33:46):
Media we talked about the confidence that you see When
Darius robinson's talking about. Football Marvin Harrison, junior you could
definitely see that as. Well in his press conference last
week when he was discussing just the amount of work
he's put in throughout the. Offseason that's another guy that
looks absolutely. Yoked and that's something THAT jg kind of
made the joke. About he, said should look at his
ham strings as, well which from our DISTANCE i couldn't
(34:08):
really get a good, view but he's.
Speaker 4 (34:10):
A little obstructed from the wide.
Speaker 2 (34:12):
Receiver JG's messed with the media when he says check
out his, hamstrings, right.
Speaker 1 (34:17):
Maybe he wants just looking at the wrong. Area he's
not serious about, that, Right that is his gallows.
Speaker 4 (34:21):
Humor, RIGHT i, mean to a certain, extent poking fun at,
it trying to not answer the. Question but maybe maybe
mhj's hamstrings really are as twitchy as we've been.
Speaker 2 (34:32):
TOLD i, mean we did get a semi. Compliment he
said he'd like the pace of the press. Conference the
media was bringing good. Juice but then what he fired a?
Shot what he Say it's about?
Speaker 1 (34:41):
Time, yeah it's about time he's been. Waiting it only
took us three. Years.
Speaker 2 (34:45):
Yeah by the, way the last question and answer From
Drew petson was interesting About Kyler murray and now they're
working in the off season With Kyler murray outside the. Pocket,
now not so much design, rollouts but when a play
breaks down in your escaping the pocket to extend the,
play keep your eyes. Downfield and Because Kyler, murray and
(35:10):
this is Something Drew petsing, SAID i think everybody agrees with.
This Kyler murray is one of those rare elite athletes
in THE nfl who when he does break the, pocket
good things can. Happen certain things can happen with only
a handful of guys who can pull it off. Athletically
kyler is one of those. Dudes so, now if you
can make a defense pay for bum rushing the pocket
and trying to get To kyler and you can get
(35:30):
outside that, pocket if you can increase your efficiency in
his throws and the completion percentage of when he gets
outside that, pocket Advantage. Cardinals AND i think that is
a big area where this offense takes the next. STEP i,
mean you were bottom thirty year ago in chunk, Plays
chunk pass plays your top, five and chunk run. Plays
(35:51):
so if you're trying to get that ball, downfield gets
twenty yards or more per pass, play which was hard at.
Time so The cardinals last, year then guess what a
great way to do it is When Kyler murray's buying
time outside the pocket and once corners start having to
cover for four or five six, seconds forget about.
Speaker 4 (36:09):
It personnel is not always the sole. ISSUE i will
be curious to see the more that we see players
out on the field throughout the off, season what part
of the passing game looks Different if it's pretty much
the same with who's throwing the, ball who's catching the,
ball and who's? Blocking is it what is being asked to?
(36:31):
Them and the routes and the? Timing is it? Communication
is it the play? CALLING i think you could argue
on combination of all three to a certain. Extent but
from what we heard from players and coaches at the
end of last season and wanting and needing more from
the passing, game and there is clear belief from the
top down that they have the right people because they
(36:52):
didn't make changes in the off season personnel, wise what
changes are going to be made so that the passing
game does look different and is more efficient on a consistent.
Speaker 2 (37:01):
Basis, Okay i'll answer that at Least i'll take a
shot at here we, Go so in the off, Season
Calvic consulting disagreed with everyone's, Saying, oh we need the
speed receiver to take the top off and stretch of. Field,
yeah that's, great that's a luxury you don't necessarily. Need
cardinals have been, there had done, That Andy, ISABELLA Jj
nelson for, two A John brown who had a productive
(37:22):
couple of. Years i'm not Dismissing smoke because he was.
Good but what you need more desperately is more reliable
third down. Targets it can't be feast or, Famine trey
McBride or. Nothing you got. It whether It's Marvin Erson,
junior is a third down reliable, target whether It's Zay,
Jones Greg, Dortch Michael wilson, obviously you, KNOW i Think
(37:45):
Michael wilson's the first one to raise his hand and
volunteer for that. Role make me a third down target
with more. REGULARITY i think to that, degree you've got
to keep a pass, defense, honest targeting more guys and
e all that passing offense like you, Mentioned, danny especially
when it's thirty and you gotta have. It there's got
(38:05):
to be more options than Just trey. McBride because it
just seemed like if you didn't find number eighty, five
you weren't moving the. Sticks and so to, me that's
first and foremost when it comes to improving the pass.
Speaker 4 (38:18):
Game that is good coach. Speak coach one.
Speaker 5 (38:21):
Thing, quickly we talked about having a wide receiver that
could take the top. Off that is exactly What Drew.
Petsing he said absolutely With Marvin Harrison junior that he
feels he has the ability to do.
Speaker 4 (38:32):
That i'm still curious if That blair is already on
the roster In Xavier, weaver.
Speaker 5 (38:37):
That'd be awesome if it, is because he has the
skill set to do.
Speaker 1 (38:39):
It could be could be.
Speaker 4 (38:40):
Saw Some flash's last, preseason last training, camp.
Speaker 1 (38:44):
And then the last game or two he. Dressed he
was on a couple of.
Speaker 4 (38:48):
Targets its on a green. Bay we saw him because
that's When harrison had the, concussion, yep and he came
close to having some big. Plays all.
Speaker 2 (38:56):
Right so as you wrap it up here Without Craig
gril hashtag edition by subtraction in a cave the h
he has no. Idea it's like being in a. Casino
he has no idea what time it isn't and he
might be there as. Well we learned That Walter nolan
brought something in the d line. Room usually guys bring
donuts or you, know maybe some fast, food some sort of,
(39:19):
treat maybe some.
Speaker 1 (39:20):
Drinks he Brought epsom salt.
Speaker 4 (39:23):
Bags you've Never oh my, god help he brought some.
Speaker 1 (39:27):
Salt first, off it was dexa scan you know what
us salt.
Speaker 4 (39:32):
Though that is. Fantastic you you have a bath and
you Put epsom salt. In it's supposed to. Help it's
supposed to help you not be a sore and to
help you. Relax and depending on the, scent it can
have different effects of what you're trying to, reach if
you're trying to become more, calm whatever that might. Be,
OH i love a Good epsom salt. Bath are you
kidding that? ONE i actually?
Speaker 1 (39:51):
Know?
Speaker 2 (39:53):
Okay AM i not keeping up with the? Times aren't
these the toughest of the tough guys and they're they're,
there they're getting epsin salt Scented epsom salt so they.
Speaker 4 (40:01):
Can it's about. Recovery maybe what's.
Speaker 1 (40:03):
The next thing he's bringing in? CANDLES i, mean what's going?
Speaker 4 (40:06):
On that's a nice combination if you're really trying.
Speaker 5 (40:08):
To relax in the corner of that locker. Room you
might need a few candles after a.
Speaker 2 (40:12):
Practice zach did did you ever have to bring anything
into The cardinals content room as a young.
Speaker 1 (40:16):
GUY i don't think you.
Speaker 4 (40:18):
DID i need to change that retroactively my smile on.
Speaker 1 (40:22):
Personality, no that's not. Enough that's not going.
Speaker 4 (40:24):
To move the needle for.
Speaker 5 (40:25):
Us you, KNOW i like to look at, myself even
Though i've been called a seventh round draft pick once
in my. LIFE i Think i'm like the rookie that
doesn't need to have those responsible.
Speaker 4 (40:35):
AND i will discuss what you can bring next.
Speaker 1 (40:36):
Week, yeah that's. True the leadership. Counts i'm doing this
three years.
Speaker 5 (40:40):
Late Now i'm going to year number three with.
Speaker 2 (40:42):
This, well you, know there it's. Been we've been remissed
as The Leadership council and retroactively.
Speaker 5 (40:47):
Just as all my way to a second contract at this,
RATE i.
Speaker 2 (40:50):
Mean what's the statute of limitations for the? Irs seven?
Years you know you can get audited up to seven.
Years so that shall bring the donuts on the next
edition Of, Cardinals cover two
