Speaker 1 (00:00):
Everyone. Mitch oltis Voice of the Chiefs. Here a reminder
that our Fantasy Draft podcast is presented by bud Light,
the official beer of the Chiefs Kingdom. Now we're on
the clock. The Kansas City Chiefs are now on the clock.
The Kansas City Chiefs first round selection with a fifty
and selection with the sixty third pick. The Kansas City
(00:23):
Chiefs have selected. We're welcome back to our Chiefs Fantasy Draft.
If you saw episode one, you know how it works.
If you didn't, here's what we're doing. Mitch oltis with
your Voice of the Chiefs. Really, I'm Sunny Weaver Junior
on draft day. Bad movie, by the way, but still
that's what we got. What we got people, What are
we doing here? What are we doing? We're gonna do
(00:43):
this or we're gonna do this. And with me's Matt McMullan,
a Chiefs reporter. But this is kind of fun. We're
looking back at sixty one years of Chiefs history and
who we would choose. We've got our big board and
so kind of fun. And episode one and this one,
this episode will be really interesting and controversial in light
of social media, because I got a feeling you and
I will both be criticized in this one. I think
(01:05):
you're right. So we'll recap what we did in the
first episode. We drafted our quarterbacks, we drafted our punter,
our kicker, and our head coach, kind of the foundation
of the team, right, And I'll recap quickly who I took.
I have Patrick Mahomes at quarterback, Lyn Dawson's my backup,
Dustin Colqwitz my punter, Johnston and Rud's my kicker, and
Hankstram as my head coach. And now we're gonna do
some skill positions, so running back, wide receiver, and tight end.
(01:27):
Each of us will draft three running backs, three wide receivers,
and two tight ends. This will be interesting because the
last episode we're both just scrambling basically to get a
quarterback and a head coach, and kicker and punter would
figure itself out. There's a lot of different directions we
could go with this with wide receiver, running back, and
tight end. It is in my episode one. I get
Andy Reid is my head coach, Boom Joe Montana is
(01:49):
my starting quarterback, Alex Smith is my backup. I've got
Harrison Butker as my kicker, and Gerald Wilson Thunderfoot as
my punter. So we're ready now for episode two. You
coin flip episode one if you want to go back
to it that that was a controversial coin flip. I
called your own Bettis. He's like, dude, what was happening
with that? Because that happened to me at the fifty yardland.
Was a Jeff Triplett or somebody screwed it up? So
(02:11):
am I going we're flipping again? Am I gotta go?
I gotta go first, get the first pick? Works all right? Good?
So we're in an episode two basically Draft second round again.
I'm Sunny Weaver junior on the movie Draft Day. I'm
going crazy. I got all kinds of things going on
in my life. I got some things going on in
the office that might not hr might not like, but
that's okay. We're going on here with episode two. So
I can either pick a running back with this number one,
(02:34):
pick a wide receiver or a tight end. And here's
where we're going. So let the controversy begin, because I
tried to find a player who could fill more than
one role, and so I'm going to pick the greatest
tight end to ever play in the National Football league.
Travis Kelsey. All right, Travis Kelsey, when you look at
the numbers, seventy nine hundred all purpose yards, but he
(02:58):
really is a wide receiver tied end. At the same time,
we have seen since over his career, and especially in
the last three years, the most successful three years combined
together in Chief's history, what he can do to defenses.
He beats corners, just look at the playoffs in twenty twenty.
He can beat safeties, he can beat zone, he can
beat man, he can block. He does it all. So
(03:20):
with the number one pick, Sonny Weaver Jr. Is taking
Chiefs and future Pro Football Hall of Fame the best
tight end to ever do it, Travis Kelsey with my
number one pick. Yeah, you can't go wrong with that.
I think it's funny because we've talked about this over
the years now, Travis Kelsey, I feel like nationally it's
still kind of pigeonholed into being a tight end. It's like, oh,
here's his numbers compared to other tight ends, and they're ridiculous.
(03:42):
He's a top five wide receiver in the NFL, and
it's crazy the Chiefs haven't met tight end. He's one
of the best I'm going to stick with the current
team With my first pick of this episode. I'm gonna
go Tyreek Hill because there's no better combination in sports
than Patrick Mahomes and Tyreek Hill. Think about Tyreek's numbers.
Most explosive player in the league. Know that, particularly with
Patrick Mahomes nineteen touchdowns of fifty or more yards since
(04:04):
twenty sixteen. That's most in the NFL by eight touchdowns,
So nobody gets close to touching him there. I look
this up. So Jerry Rice has the most fifty yard
touchdowns in NFL history with thirty six. Tyrika has a
shot at that record. So we'll see what happens over
the next several years here. But Tyrrek Hill could go
down as the most explosive player in NFL history, and
he's joining my team with Patrick Mahomes. Can't argue with
(04:25):
that pick. You took a one of my favorites once again.
But I'm gonna go and stay at the wide receiver
position because I'm gonna go with the guy of Kansas
City Chiefs fame that should be in the Pro Football
Hall of Fame and he gets discussed for years and
years and years and they still won't put him in
and he should and hopefully someday they will. But Otis
Taylor was way ahead of his time if you look
at what Otis Taylor was able to do again playing
(04:48):
in the sixties at nineteen sixty five draft that we've
done another feature on. But Otis Taylor could beat anybody
that was trying to cover him. And his play in
Super Bowl four where he catches the hitch route and
then take it all the way for the touchdown was
much like Damian Williams running immortality in Super Bowl fifty four.
So I'm gonna go with the guy that should be
in Pro Football Hall of Fame, but he's in the
(05:08):
Chief Ring of Honor, wide receiver, Otis Taylor. All Right,
I think that's a great pick, but also at the
same time to relate to draft to him kind of
like the Jacksonville GM right now. I didn't realize this
guy would be still be on the board, and I'm
trying to figure out why, and I'm just gonna jump
at him. Jamal Charles, I mean, he does not get
the credit he deserves as one of the greatest running
backs of all time, and that's because he didn't play
for a super long time. But you look at the
sample size of when he did play, it's absolutely bonkers.
(05:31):
More than seventeen hundred yards from scrimmage three times, more
than nineteen hundred yards from scrimmage twice. I hear your
phone buzzing. It could be a trade right now. He
was a dynamic receiver. He could get you one yard
between the tackles if you needed to, but he could
also break off a home run play. So Jamal Charles
was the absolute best in twenty thirteen, nearly two thousand
yards from scrimmage and nineteen touchdowns. He was unstoppable. Pair
(05:52):
him with Patrick Mahomes, Good luck stopping my offense. Nope,
I love taking one of my but I'm gonna I'm
gonna hit you with this next one. This will surprise everybody.
And that was the call because it came from my
people that and it was a telemarketer. So here's what
I'm gonna go with. And this will surprise some folks
and people have forgotten about this guy in Chiefs or
should I say Dallas, Texan history, because my third pick
(06:16):
of episode two is a young man by the name
of Abner Haynes. Here's where we're going with Abner Haynes.
Now you talk about Jamal love Jamal Jamal eleven thousand,
four hundred to all purpose yards, listen to Abner Haynes
twelve thousand and sixty five all purpose yards in less games.
Remember they're only playing fourteen games back then, forty six
(06:39):
rushing touchdowns, twenty receiving touchdowns, punt returned for a touchdown,
kick returned for a touchdown, and when you add in
all of his receiving and rushingtown, I now get three
players in one. I've got a returner if I want,
I've got the Jamal Charles Before Jamal Charles in Abner Haines,
he screwed up the coin toss, I know in the
(07:01):
nineteen sixty two AFL game. But Abner, the North Texas
mean Green. The Eagles are proud of you, and so
am I. Because you are my third pick of episode two.
I think that's an awesome pick. He's the guy that
scribbled down and it's perfect because you have If Andy
Reid is your head coach, can you imagine ab Haynes
on this Chief's team. I mean I wrote some notes
down in Abner Haynes because I was excited about him.
(07:21):
From nineteen sixty to sixty four, he ranked third and
scrimmage yards behind Jim Brown and Jim Taylor. Absolutely crazy.
He's not listening because he's no no coache just said,
that's it, that's it. Let's roll. He just said, let's roll.
He had five hundred rushing and five hundred receiving yards
and three separate seasons. Yeah, it's incredible, very crazy, crazy good.
He's off the board. So what do I do. She's
fans need to go back and look at him, by
(07:42):
the way and realize because he's just kind of he's
under the radar and he didn't into his career with
the Texans and Chiefs, but phenomenal player. Again, these guys
were ahead of their time, multi all purpose guys and
Andy Reid guy, you're for sure. Yeah, that's perfect. That's
all kind of the point of all this, right is
to unearth these guys and learn about him. Um. Okay,
so I've taken Charles, I have Tyreek Kill, a lot
of explosive players on my offense so far. I'm gonna
(08:03):
go for an end zone guy, one of the greatest
tight ends of all time, a guy that in terms
of Chiefs history, Travis Kelsey is trying to catch up
to with all the crazy receiving yards and touchdowns and
stuff that he had in his great career. Of course,
I'm talking about Tony Gonzalez. Tony Gonzalez has the most
receiving yards in NFL history by tight end with over
fifteen thousand, also second most receiving touchdowns with one hundred
(08:24):
and eleven. He's largely responsible for what the tight end
position is today. I mean he changed everything. Think about
guys like Jimmy Graham. Jimmy Graham ply would be in
the NFL if it wasn't for Tony Gonzalez and the
road that he paved, and guys at Travis Kelsey are
all following what Tony Gonzalez did. So Tony Gonzalez is
going to join my team. Great end zone threat for
Patrick Mahomes. I'm excited about this pick. YEP, hard to
argue against that one, but I'm going to stay on
(08:46):
my multiplicity, keeping my roster doing different things. That's what
That's what bread Beach has done with the Chiefs, right.
So with my next pick, the fourth pick of episode two,
I am going to take Priest Holmes was my running back.
This way, I can play him an Admer Hayes at
the same time with Joe Montana quarterback and Andy Reid's
head coach, and Travis Kelsey's a tight end and Otis
(09:09):
Taylor wide receiver. Good luck, have a good night's sleep.
So I'm gonna pick Priest Holmes with my fourth pick. Honestly,
one of the great rushers. I gotta get that offensive
line to go with him too, but hey, we're working
on that on later episodes. But anyway, taking Priest Homes
like that backfield I got, Yeah, I was. I was
(09:29):
eyeing Priest Tomes as I was saying with Trent Green
in our previous episode, Priest Toms is the running back
I grew up watching. It was the two thousand three
squab and you rushed for what twenties seven touchdowns? And
I wanted to crush you emotionally with that pick because
I knew that was one of your emotional picks. Yeah
you are, You are crushing me emotionally here. Um. Priest
Holmes was an absolute man for like a three year span.
He was the best in the NFL. And I was
joining your backfield. I'm gonna follow your lead here and
(09:51):
go for a running back. I still I guess I
have Tyre Kiel wide receiver, but I still don't have
another wide receiver. I'm gonna running back then, I'm gonna
go with Christian A. Koyer the Nigeria in a Nightmare.
I'm kind of thinking about this because I know Jamal
Charles can get the yards between the tackles, but the
thunder and lightning combination of Jamal Charles and Christian mcquoi
would be completely ridiculous. And that's what I'm gonna go for.
He only played six years in the NFL, but those
(10:13):
six years were absolutely awesome. From nineteen eighty seven to
ninety two, he ranked sixth in the NFL and rushing
yards with four thousand, eight hundred and ninety seven had
forty rushing touchdowns in that span. If you need one yard,
he's getting it. There's no doubt about that. If you
look at like the stuff percentage of a lot of
the great running backs back then, guys like Barry Sanders,
they're really good, but they got stuffed quite a bit. Yeah,
Christian mcquoi a never did. He's gonna pair with Jamal
(10:37):
Charles in my offense. You can't stop him. You can't
stop him. No, that's a great pick. I'm with you
on that one. And yeah, you're gonna get a short yard.
J Patrick will love having him in the backfield. And
we know what Stram will do as your head coach.
So there's a lot of places to go here. Again,
I'm sitting here. I've got two running backs. I need
another running back. I've got one wide receiver. I need
(10:58):
two more of those, and I need an another tight end.
And that's where I'm going because it's one of the
most underrated players in the history of pro football, and
really one of the most underrated players in the history
of this franchise. And it's Fred Arbanis talking about a
guy again who was ahead of his time. Fred Arbanis
in ten years played in Super Bowl one end four
thirty four touchdowns. Was incredible. And I'm telling you Montana
(11:21):
just call me, and he loves this pick because he
needs he needs a tight end along with Kels. Kels again,
can be now all of a sudden, I'm gonna mess
with your yep yet, Joe, Yeah, I got it. Yeah,
tell Jennifer Hybit. Thanks. All right, So here's what we
got because I can now play those two guys together
and I'm gonna mess with your coverage. So I'm going
to take Super Bowl four champion tight end Fred Arbanis
(11:42):
as my second tight end. Okay, I like that. With
my next pick, I'm gonna keep kind of going with
a trend here I established with Patrick in Tyreek and Jamal.
Really it's finding explosive players. When you have Patrick Mahomes,
you can check the ball a country mile. You want
explosive players. I'm gonna pick up a Carlos Carson with
my next pick, blazing speed who could burn corners, average
eighteen point one at yards per catch in his career.
(12:03):
It's a franchise record. He had a stretch from nineteen
eighty three to eighty seven where he ranked seventh in
the NFL receiving yards. It's pretty good, almost five thousand
receiving yards, and in nineteen eighty three he caught eighty
passes for one three hundred and fifty one yards and
seven touchdowns. They guy could run out by any corner,
no problem at all. So if you're having to deal
with Pirae kill and Carlos Carson split out wide with
Patrick mahomestrowing the football. Good luck, yep. And that's You've
(12:26):
put me in a little bit of a spot here
because I've got Travis Kelciotis Taylor, Abner Haynes, Priest Holmes,
Fred Arbannis. Love that crew, Love my two tight ends
because I've locked that up. Because I'm gonna see what
you're going with your second tight end here at some point,
because that's where I had a hard time, because after
those three gets a little weird, I think you're gonna
love it by it, Okay, I'll probably love it so
but again, I'm looking for explosive players as well. And
(12:50):
here's where I've got to have your imagination because I'm
going to use this guy in the slot. I may
line him up with the Z at the receiver position,
but I'm gonna go with Joe Delaney. Okay, just the
two years he had. But we know the story of
Joe Delaney in the early nineteen eighties. What if that
dude would have been able to play ten to twelve years.
(13:11):
We all were thinking what could have been? But now
I got Joe Delaney, I've got Abner Haynes, I've got
Otis Taylor, I got Travis Kelsey and Priest Homes all
of a sudden, I am going to keep defensive coordinators
will not sleep any night that they play me. So
a bit of a surprise. But my third running back
because I've got Admer Haynes, Priest Homes, and I'm taking
the late Joe Delaney because watch me do some stuff.
(13:34):
Turn coach Reid loose Man. Just get that, all three
the same lineup at the same time. All right, you
go big, we'll run by you. You go little, we'll
pound you. We'll go it. We'll do it because we
still have priest Homes as my single back. So Joe Delaney,
we wish he could have played more years because he
would have been one of the greats of all time. Yeah, absolutely,
and part of kind of a wealth of great running
(13:55):
backs in Chief's history, which making my board for running backs,
it was really exciting because there's so many good players
that have played running back for this franchise. I'm not
going to go running back with my next pick, though,
I'm gonna go with Dwayne Bow at wide receiver, more
of a recent player. Obviously, three thousand yards seasons for
Dwayne Bow, including his rookie year where he had nine
hundred and ninety five yards. So basically for that thousand
(14:16):
yeard seasons for Dwayne Bow. He had that fifteen touchdown
season in two thousand and ten, which was incredible and
bets a franchise record that Tyreek matched this past season.
And he's kind of a big body receiver that kind
of helps fill out my receiver corps, you know. So
I have like the Burners and Tyreek and Carlos Carson,
and Tyreek is a complete receiver that can do everything.
But Dwayne Bow is a different kind of body than
those guys, and he kind of fills out my wide
receiver corps. Yeah, and if he would have played with
(14:37):
Patrick Mahomes might have been a little different, I think. Yeah.
So yeah, Patrick's gotta like that. Plus you got the
pound and ground. You got the ground and pound with
the Nigerian nightmare back. They're on your team. So I'm
looking at this. I've got my two tight ends and
I'm sitting here looking I've got my three running backs.
So now I've got to go wide receiver. I put
(14:57):
myself in a little bit of a hole, but I
really have because I'm going with these underrated guys. I mean,
tear up Google here, if you want to go to
find your favorite search engine and go well, I didn't
even remember. Yeah, think about because I'm gonna go with
Chris Burford as my pick at wide receiver. Okay, now
with Chris Burford, you got to go back in time. Here.
He averaged fourteen point one to catch Check what ty
(15:19):
Reek's doing? All right, So not the same guy, but
very effective. Fifty five touchdowns in only one hundred and
sixty three games. Do the math and extrapolate it out.
Fifty five touchdowns one hundred sixty three games. Chris Burford
again was ahead of his time. Chris, you're there with
Otis Taylor, one of your old teammates, in that wide
receiver room. Let's go love it have He's in that
(15:41):
picture on Twitter where it's the old sixties huddle with
Lynn Dawson and a much of those guys, and then
it's you see like Travis Kelsey and those guys. I'm
imagining that's what your team is right now, which is
really cool. Yeah, I think it's really cool. Now. We
talked about having EA sports like put these together, right
and then having Tyreek play like Chris. Yeah, well that
would be the dreams. Mario I don't know if it's possible,
(16:01):
but yeah, could put these teams together and we could
see how they would do. I mean, I think it'd
be awesome. I think we get out of COVID, we
get into the Tower Club. Let those two guys play
with our two teams. Yeah, and then we can badger
them because I picked a great team. And if Tyreeks
got my team and we wouln't play against ya, he
play against himself, Uh, then we could badger him and
you know, good after him. I think it's a great idea.
(16:23):
It's yeah, exactly where it's the where the engineers at
these teams. Any we were junior right now, it's good
and tight. Imagine people, what are we doing? People? What
I got? What's what's the coach's name in draft day?
I don't remember that guy, but so that guy would
be like Tyreek basically yeah, yelling at him like I
got you the players, man, I got you the groceries.
So let's go. All right, So I need to fill
(16:45):
a running back spot and a tight end spot. I'm
gonna round out my running back corps with Marcus Allen.
And this is kind of in the same vein as
when you got Joe Montana in the last episode. I'll
reiterate Marcus Allen was really good with the Chiefs. I
mean he was come Back Player of the Year's first
year he had an eight hundred thirty rushing yards and
nine touchdowns at thirty six years old. He still had
it when he was with the Chiefs. But I'm not
just getting the Marcus Allen that was with the Chiefs.
(17:07):
I'm getting Marcus Allen in this scenario because we make
the rules, because it's our draft. So Marcus Allen is
gonna round out my running back corps with the Jamal
Charles Christian Nigoye, Marcus Allen. It's gray one and that's
her digging in, thinking outside the box. That's what you do, Matt.
You saw your match stat So I've got one more
wide receiver to take and this one gets tough. You
(17:27):
got to dig in here and be imaginative, and that's
what I've tried to do with this team. But I've
given coach a lot of speed, right He's got Otis Taylor.
I got coachrut as my coach. He's got Abner Haynes.
We can do all kinds of stuff, but I need
a return game too, So I want to go with
Dante Hall, who's a wide receiver, kick returner slash here
with my eighth and final pick of episode two. You
(17:49):
got it the human joystick running four directions at the
same time. The numbers aren't huge here, but the affectiveness is.
And put him with my other cats. Put him with Delaney,
and put him with Abner Haynes and Otis Taylor and
Travis Kelcey in our baddest let it Fly. So we
remember your Joystick. We got your X factor Dante Halls
on my team. Plus I really like him. I think
that's a good point because I actually talked to Dante
(18:09):
earlier this week, and well, did I nice? Yeah, he's
a great guy to talk to you, especially, I mean
I grew up watching and you grew up calling his games.
He's still very involved in our community, which is awesome.
But what I think it's cool about Dante is if
you if you asked a random fan, what do you
think is Dante's favorite play as a Chief, He probably
think in the two thousand and three punt returned against
the Broncos, right when he ran all the way back
and then scored a touchdown. That's not his favorite play.
(18:32):
You know what his favorite play is, and he guesses
his favorite play was the play in two thousand and two,
I believe against the Broncos at Mile High when he
was at wide receiver and he had the two Broncos
run into each other because he was joking him out,
and he scored a touchdown on that play. And that's
his favorite play because it showed that he was more
than just a special teamer, which he's remembered for. He
was an offensive player too. And that's when the joystick started.
(18:52):
That's when I popped it out, like what does that
even look like? It's a joystick of the old you know,
the old video games, and that was that play. Yeah.
Plus he always wanted to be known as a wide
receiver too, just a kick returner. So yeah, well he
deserves it, and he'll get that opportunity on your team,
you see, will he'll get to touch the ball? Yeah,
a little, because I got some other touches. I gotta
get to some other guys here. But yeah, well it's
funny segue here. A guy that will probably not touch
(19:13):
the ball much on my team, but is very important.
And he was on those teams with Dante in the
early two thousands. My tight end who I think you'll like,
Jason Dunn. Yeah, I'm going with Jason jd that you got,
you got the Nigerian nightmare show if you get the
right unit on the field, and if Patrick was just
willing to let hand it off and let Dunn block
(19:33):
six guys. Yeah, yeah, I like what you're doing here. Yeah.
I mean for fans that don't know Jason Dunn was.
This is back on the day before it was every
tight end caught, you know, fifty passes for eight hundred
yards or whatever. This is back on the day where
a tight end that went out there and blocked, and
Jason Dunn was like the best blocking tight end in
the NFL. I tried looking at Pro Football focuses blocking
grades back in like two thousand and two. Unfortunately they
(19:56):
don't go back that far, but I have a feeling
he would be at the very top of those if
that was still thing. He was absolutely incredible. He's kind
of the forgotten man on a lot of those early
two thousands Chiefs teams because everyone remembers the offensive line,
but he was essentially an extension of that, and he
was really, really good. So you said it best. Jason
Dunn blocking for Christian Koya and Jamal Charles and Patrick Mahomes.
(20:17):
I feel pretty good about it. Unfair, so your three
running mix you're done then, so your three running backs
are Jamal Charles, Ushian mc koya, and Marcus Allen. Yeah.
So here's where the controversy begins, because now we're gonna
get hammered on. Here's where it starts because we both
left Ed Podolac and Mike Garrett off the board. He's on,
they're on my big board. But I was going with
speed and multiplicity and yeah, because I'm gonna I'd like
(20:40):
Abner Haynes blast from the past, Priest Holmes, why not?
And then when I look at Joe Delaney, I needed
some flexibility there. But high m a mention to Ed
Podolac and Mike Garrett of the sixty nine Chiefs at
won Super Bowl four and yes, Mike Garrett was the
guy that ran the ball in sixty five. Absolutely. Ye,
So there we go. There's episode two, Have a Way.
(21:01):
But now we're getting ready to episode three. Brett Veach
might join us for that one. Yeah, so you want
to be ready why don't be ready for that one,
but there we go. I got Travis kelcey Otis Taylor, Abner, Haines,
Priest Holmes, Fred Our Banist, Joe Delaney, Chris Burfor, Dante Hall,
and I got Jamal Charles at, Christian mccoyer, Marcus Allen
at Tyreek Hill with Carlos Carson at, Dwayne Bow with
Tony Gonzalez and Jason Dunn. Episode three. Don't want to
(21:25):
miss it,
