Speaker 1 (00:00):
Countdown to Kickoff continues. The Jaguars and the Detroit Lions
coming up in Week eleven. Longtime NFL offensive lineman multiple
Pro Bowls. Now the analyst for the Lions radio network
is Lomas Brown. It's nice to visit with you and
boy when a game it's gonna be at Ford Field.
Speaker 2 (00:18):
How are you.
Speaker 3 (00:19):
I'm doing great, doing great man, as you know, in
the middle of the great season. So I'm hoping that
we can continue things here in Detroit.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (00:29):
It's been a heck of a run the last couple
of years for the Lions. It just continues so far
this year with this fantastic start. Let's start in general
with the way this team has really taken the personality
of Dan Campbell, at least it feels that way from
the outside looking in? Is that reality? Is that who
they are? Is Dan Campbell for real? And is this
(00:50):
what the Lions are?
Speaker 3 (00:51):
Yeah? Yeah, yeah, and yes, I mean this is what
they've built. They've been building it over the last three
four years here in Detroit, and this is the results
of what you see. It's the type of guys that
they draft, the type of free agents that they bring in,
you know, the foundational pieces of this team are set.
(01:14):
They made sure they took care of these guys, and
that's the one thing that you know if you come here,
if you play hard, if you're a team player, you're
going to get rewarded here. And there's just so many
positives that being a Detroit Lion now compared to how
it's been in the past. So from top to bottom,
I think everything has changed around here, including the culture
(01:38):
of the Detroit Lions.
Speaker 1 (01:41):
Culture helps when you have a big physical group on
both lines of scrimmage. Lomas you know that better than anybody.
And on the offensive line, I mean, it's a fantastic group.
The starting five up front. What has made them work
together so well as a unit on the old.
Speaker 3 (01:57):
Line, I mean what it is that chemistry. I mean,
you can't say anything negative about having chemistry. These guys
have been together for a while. We've added in Kevin Zeitler,
who's been just a nice fit after losing Jonah Jackson,
(02:17):
but the foundational pieces and Panay, Sue Taylor, Dicker, Frank
ragnow those guys have been there. Graham glasgow Out has
been here for a couple of years now, and he
was here before. So it's the familiar allelie that these
guys have with each other. It's the chemistry that they
developed along with being very good. And I'm telling you,
(02:41):
coach Hank Frehley he doesn't get enough credit for how
he keeps this group together. Even when one piece is missing,
He's able to plug somebody else in the dance Skipper
Kobe sores Doll and those guys don't seem to miss
the beats. So you have to give Hank Frehley a
lot the credit for the success of this offensive line.
Speaker 1 (03:03):
Thamas Brown with US Lions Radio Network and then the
two headed monster in the backfield really kind of balances
out this offense. We know about the skill guys down
the field, Jamison Williams, Amon Ross, Saint Brown, those guys
are fantastic in the passing game. But David Montgomery and
Xavereer Gibbs. Now, obviously you blocked for one of the
best running backs in the history of the game in Barry.
(03:24):
But I mean, these guys have two different styles. How
different are they? And you know there's trust, it feels
like in both of these backs no matter the situation.
Speaker 3 (03:34):
Well, to beyond this with too, JP, it's not really
I'm telling you people will find that out. When you
look at it, you hear or see them from a distance,
you think that they are really really big. Big difference
is in the style. But I'm telling you Jr. Mere
Gibbs runs the ball hard. He runs like a small
(03:56):
aversion of David Montgomery between the tackle. And then with
David Montgomery, he's the guy that I'm telling you he's
had the longest run, you know, out of those two
when he broke it for eighty yard last year. So
David has the big play capability too if you get
(04:17):
him out of the space. So it's so it's remarkable
how different they are, but how similar they are, and
how each of them are able to take parts of
each other's game and use it. Like I say, Jamerican
run between the tackle. He'll surprise people at how hard
he runs between the tackles. And David Montgomery will surprise
(04:40):
people how he could get to the edges. And once
he gets out there, he's the threat to take it
the distance.
Speaker 1 (04:48):
Lois Brown with US Lions Radio Network, let's flip it
out of the Lions defense. Aiden Hutchinson of course, is
done for the year. So how have they been able
to or have they been able to fill his production
or have we seen what they have in mind yet?
It seems like at the debut of somebody this week
might change that.
Speaker 2 (05:08):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (05:08):
Man, that's what we're hoping here in Detroit. That's what
we need here.
Speaker 1 (05:12):
Man.
Speaker 3 (05:12):
I mean again, it hadn't been it's been feast of
famine basically because they ain't been out and basically the
feast has been up the middle. With Aleen McNeil, that's
what we've been getting most of our pressure in our
sacks from the middle of our defense. He's been doing
an excellent jobs. He's just taking his game to another
(05:35):
level and Josh Pascal those guys, so we're getting significant
push up the middle. What we need is on the edges,
and that's where we're hoping that Zadarius Smith will be
that guy that can provide that edge pressure that we've
been missing every since Aidon Hutchinson is going down. So
you know, again, we don't want to put everything on
(05:57):
one player because it's unfair to do that, but man,
I think he could just be a huge piece to
how the Lions want to look later on down this year.
When you start talking about playoff football, and then when
you start talking about defensive football, so hopefully he'll be
able to just go in there and be just a
great fit with the rest of those guys, and you
(06:19):
could just see his impact immediately.
Speaker 1 (06:23):
Lomas, the back end of this defense is fantastic. It
feels like Herbie Joseph's tied for the league leading interceptions
with six of them. Brian Branch just runs everywhere. So
those two safeties alone, I mean, what are they bringing
the back end of this group? And you know, you know,
it feels like that's a big piece of what they
(06:44):
do on the back end here because those guys are
flying all over the field.
Speaker 3 (06:47):
Yeah, And the thing about it, Okay, you got one
guy and Brian Branch, who we can and we do
used all over the field. You'll see Brian that the
line of scrimmage, You'll see him in the line, back
of box, You'll see them deep, you'll see him anywhere.
He covers lot receivers. And you don't hear about a
safety that can do that. So we could put in
(07:10):
on slots, we can put them on tight ends. And
this guy is just excellent man that doing it. He's
all proing to making right now in his second year.
And then you look at Kirby Joseph Man, He's like
a center fielder back that nothing's gonna get past him.
He's our Mookie Betts. You know what I'm saying, Nothing
get past this guy. This guy could cover from sideline,
(07:32):
the sideline and deep and he's been excellent in the
end zone where like four of those picks have come
in the end zone, so that it's just been a
great combination. So when you have safeties like that, it
enables those corners that either play more aggressive, you know
what I'm saying, They could do different things at the
(07:53):
corner position because you got guys that are great in
the backfield that could cover for any mistakes.
Speaker 1 (08:00):
All Right, Loma's final thought with here. I was up
there a couple of times last year for games late
in the season, and just seeing the energy of the
city has behind the team of some success for the
first time last year in a long time. That's carried over. Now,
what would what would the city of Detroit be like
if they take this thing all the way to the
(08:22):
Lombardi Trophy.
Speaker 3 (08:23):
Oh my god, man, I'm telling you as you witness
and you see it on the road. If you know
that how we travel on the road.
Speaker 2 (08:34):
Think about all those fans that travel on the road,
all those fans that live in all those opposing cities
that we go to converging on Detroit.
Speaker 3 (08:44):
You know, with all with our population that we already
have here, don't forget we got Canada the five minutes
away from us, So we're gonna have the support of
another country that comes over and celebrates with us. Man,
it'll be epic. That'll be the word I used, because
it'll be something they haven't seen here. The Pistons have
(09:04):
done what they've done, the Red Wings have done what
they've done, and even the Tigers have done what they
did back in the eighties. But it'll be nothing compared
to the Lions winning the Lombardy. The parade would be epic.
Speaker 1 (09:19):
Thanks for the time, lovers, appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (09:22):
Good luck this week
Speaker 3 (09:24):
