Speaker 1 (00:00):
Time for our weekly conversation with Pride of the Jaguars
running back Fred Taylor, And all right, Fred, here we go.
Week eleven Jaguars headed to Detroit. But let's briefly look
back to last week. The defense held the Vikings to
four field goals. They were on the field forever. They
hit three takeaways with some good things on defense, but

(00:20):
the offense was just awful. That's absolutely awful. Fifth worst
day in the history of the franchise. How do they
work themselves out of this? Are they cooked? Can they
get anything done on offense?

Speaker 2 (00:30):
I like that question. Are they cooked? That's what the
young kids are saying these days.

Speaker 3 (00:34):
Right, everything's cooked, and it seems in the most inopportune time.

Speaker 2 (00:39):
They are cooked.

Speaker 3 (00:40):
You know, we've seen and we've mentioned this before JP
many games this year. Let's just focus on his six
losses or seven losses, but six of them? No, actually, yeah,
eight losses. Where is my brain today? But I'm focusing
on his six losses by just a little over four
points twenty five point total, and that was six losses.

(01:03):
If we can just look at the errors that they
made in those moments, it's a sign of a team
that's been slowly boiling. I think they're now officially cooked
because they just can't seem to function. There's a hump
that they can't get over. There are so many opportunities
out there that they just seem to not be able

(01:25):
to grasp, and it continues to slip through the cracks.
And at this point in the season, you know you
are who you are. There's no one out there to
save you. We have backup linemen in there are no
other prospects out there. We have injuries that have mounted.
You know, the starting quarterback he's suffering the shoulder, missed

(01:48):
last week or miss last week's game.

Speaker 2 (01:51):
So there's so much out there.

Speaker 3 (01:53):
But the one thing that I do want to give
them credit for, on top of being cooked, they still
don't believe.

Speaker 2 (02:01):
You know, they're competitive, man. You got to give them
credit for that.

Speaker 3 (02:04):
These aren't just you know, you're not the brown paper
bag type team, the old Saints where your fans are
coming to the stadium bags over their head expecting a blowout.

Speaker 2 (02:17):
You know you're gonna go.

Speaker 3 (02:18):
You're gonna say, all right, I still believe in my team,
and you know, hopefully they can get it done today.

Speaker 2 (02:23):
And they keep people coming back somehow. But those are
the real fans, right, So.

Speaker 3 (02:30):
I'm encouraged to see that they're competitive and maybe we've
gotten our expectations high based on a year ago and
a year before that when they made that playoff run
two years ago. Then last year we said, well, Trevor's
injury and some other things kind of you know, got
in their way and they had that bad part of
the second half.

Speaker 2 (02:49):
It's the same team.

Speaker 3 (02:51):
You know, they hadn't got they hadn't improved from a
year ago, quite honestly, and.

Speaker 4 (02:56):
Taylor with us.

Speaker 1 (02:57):
This is really where the fall line of the season
because if they lose this week in Detroit, they are
guaranteed a losing record, no matter if they went out
after the bye week.

Speaker 4 (03:08):
And then the bye week's coming.

Speaker 1 (03:09):
Up, so there's a lot of you know, long term
questions to be answered. We'll see what happened, and this
is like, this is a very important game certainly for
a lot of reasons, and you know, they just need
to find a win somehow. It is tough though against
this Detroit team. Yeah, pound for pound, there they're right
there is.

Speaker 4 (03:29):
The best team in the NFL.

Speaker 1 (03:30):
They've got a lot of things going and let's start
an offense. Fred It's it's a resurgent Jared Goff. They've
got a running attack with two running backs. They've got
wide receivers that can burn the field. They've got a
tight end, a good play, they got an offensive line.

Speaker 4 (03:45):
I mean, this is like the complete offense.

Speaker 3 (03:47):
It feels like, yeah, no doubt, and I believe they
are the best team in the NFL. You look at
if a team can go into your stadium throw five interceptions, uh,
and somehow still find a way to come away with
a win. Those are signs of resilient, very good, capable

(04:08):
football team.

Speaker 2 (04:09):
And they're just coach well, you know, top down, they
coach very well.

Speaker 3 (04:13):
They got all of the weapons at every position offensively, defense.
You know, they they take chances. You know, they're gonna
come in and say, hey, we're gonna play man, We're
gonna throw some blitzes at you, We're gonna pass rush you.

Speaker 2 (04:26):
Uh. You know what what's.

Speaker 3 (04:28):
Slowing him down a bit is you know, the injury
to Aiden Hutcheson. I Mean, he's just phenomenal in every
every sort of the way and the run.

Speaker 2 (04:35):
In the past, but he's not here, uh.

Speaker 3 (04:38):
And that helps the Jaguars a bit, but focusing on
the guys that are out there, they still have a
unit on both sides that are very much capable.

Speaker 2 (04:48):
You know, you got our old buddy over there, Mark Brunell.

Speaker 3 (04:52):
Who those guys that we visited two camps ago last
year's training camp just to be re see their operation.
Talk to coach Campbell, talk to the staff. They got
a staff full of former players, so they know the game.
I mean every position group has a former player coaching them,
so they kind of know what it takes to have

(05:14):
that hard to have that leadership, which is what's lacking
and a lot of locker rooms around the NFL because
all of the players are competitive, But how do you
get them to study more? How do you get them
in the building, how do you get them to focus
on what really matters? And those are usually that's the
small margin of error that you have to try to.

Speaker 2 (05:37):
Avoid.

Speaker 3 (05:38):
So those teams, I mean, they're very well coaching. They
get it done.

Speaker 1 (05:42):
Fred Taylor with US, Saverie Gibbs, David Montgomery have an
identical amount of carries this year. Yeah, it stands out
about their game. How are they different? And it seems
they're in lockstep.

Speaker 2 (05:54):
This is a real one two punch.

Speaker 3 (05:56):
You got David Montgomery who runs like Markshawn Lynch. You know,
he has his own beast mode like running style and
he can get get it done in the past game
as well.

Speaker 2 (06:08):
You know, vig checkdowns.

Speaker 3 (06:10):
He can run some routes, but he's not as dynamic
as Jamier Gibb because Gibbs he's the speaks. You know,
he's more of the I'm just gonna he's like the
Hussin boat in football. I mean he is lightning fast,
lightning quick. He has the moves, jump cut ability, he

(06:30):
catches the ball, he can run routes, run real will routes.

Speaker 2 (06:34):
So you're gonna see different matchups. If you think last week.

Speaker 3 (06:39):
The Vikings schemes up their tight ends versus Foyer Lukan,
I expect the Vikings to create some sort of matchups
in their running backs versus you know linebackers who has
decent speed but not great speed. So I expect to
see some matchups in the in the past game for forget.

(07:00):
But on the ground, they're both just amazing backs. I'm
a fan of both of them. I like Montgomery when
he was in Chicago even some years Ago. I like
Gibbs coming out of college. You know it was between
him and Bijon, and I like Gibbs when he was
coming out of Bama.

Speaker 2 (07:18):
So but I love Bijon too. I can love both
of them. I think it's okay.

Speaker 3 (07:24):
But hopefully for this particular game, the Jaguars, they've done
a really good job versus running backs, allowing guys under
one hundred yards for the most part. I think Saquon
if I'm charting it right, maybe the only one yard
rusher against right, Yeah, as a single back, the only

(07:45):
one yard rusher against. There have been other teams that
have gone over a hundred, but from a single back standpoint,
I believe say one. But the defense is done pretty
decent versus the run, and hopefully they can do that
which will help contribute to a win win possibility.

Speaker 1 (08:03):
Pret Taylor with US Jaguars secondary last week free takeaways,
they really shut down Justin Jefferson in that game.

Speaker 4 (08:10):
They made that a priority. No big plays. You know
they're on the field forever.

Speaker 1 (08:14):
But this week they've got the challenge again on the
outside with Jamison Williams who can burn it. And I'm
on Ross Saint Brown, who boy look out this this
is this duo is tough to tangle with. And what'd
you make of the secondary last week? It's a group
that's really struggled a lot this year.

Speaker 3 (08:32):
You know, I thought collectively as a unit, you know,
when you go back and look at the Buffalow game,
look at a few other games, namely the Buffalo game
went they tried to play more zone and they got
picked apart. You look at how well they played last
week and their their zones zone scheme. They didn't allow
the big, big play. You know, they sacrificed big plays

(08:55):
to the tight end. But you know that's I think
they had a twenty eight yarded by Hocketson.

Speaker 2 (09:01):
And another twenty six yarder by Oliver.

Speaker 3 (09:04):
But from the receiver standpoint, you minimize the scoring our
opportunities by keeping those guys in front of you, but
you're gonna be vulnerable in other places. So I'll be like,
I like to see what the strategy is this week
versus a very great passing team in Detroit. Tyson Campbell
has to come and play montage. You know, he has
to make plays like he made in the end zone there,

(09:26):
Ben don't break. I don't mind that style. If you
can slow down this team and keep them to three
points here there, get a few turnovers. You should get
excited after seeing the five turnovers golf throw last week
versus detection.

Speaker 2 (09:39):
So but pass rush.

Speaker 3 (09:42):
Is gonna be key again, and it's not going to
be easy because the Lions have they have a really
solid offensive line.

Speaker 1 (09:51):
All right, Fred, final thought with you here Jaguars offense.
I mean you mentioned Trevor Lawrence's left shoulder issue.

Speaker 4 (09:57):
No word, who knows what's going to happen this week?

Speaker 1 (10:00):
If mac Jones is out there again, you know, how
does he take a step forward?

Speaker 4 (10:05):
And then big picture for Trevor, do you try.

Speaker 1 (10:09):
To fight back and get on the field this season
or at some point do you shut it down? I mean,
these are big questions moving ahead, not just for this season,
but for the next offseason to come.

Speaker 3 (10:19):
You know, I think from a competitive standpoint, what we
saw from Trevor a year ago with all of the injuries,
you know, we know he's a guy who wants to
be out there. You know, we know he wants to
lead the team and be that example of not quitting
so and he's always been that way. So from that standpoint,

(10:41):
I would expect Trevor to consider playing the rest of
the season as much as he can, you know, as
long as he doesn't set him back. I think from
a business standpoint, you know, you look at the record,
you look at where they are in the potential draft
standing and now which you know they're in the lead

(11:02):
to get the number one pick as of today. The upfront,
the front office have to make a decision. I know,
no one believes in taking the season, but from a
money standpoint, they just invested two hundred and fifty million
in his quarterback.

Speaker 2 (11:20):
You don't want to go out there and get him injured,
you know, worse.

Speaker 3 (11:22):
I don't know the severity of the injury now as
we speak, but you know, there's a lot of questions
that you are, a lot of conversations that we're not
privy too that are probably going on. So who knows
from that standpoint, But I know Trevor. He's gutsy, he's competitive,
He's a true champion at heart from his days at

(11:43):
Clemson and all that stuff. So I'm sure he wants
to play. It'd be hard to keep him out. Matt
Jones Mac Jones, he just got to keep getting reps,
you know, last week wasn't pretty at all. He had
some moments, but he had a lot of really bad moments.
More up the pressured situations late in the game, and

(12:04):
to hit Max's credit, the protection wasn't great at several
moments throughout the course of the game. Doug talked about sack,
the amount of sacking and longs they had to endure
that ended up being.

Speaker 2 (12:16):
Third and very long.

Speaker 3 (12:19):
So repetitions give you the confidence to go out there
and play lights out Mac first game in quite some time.
I just think he was a bit rusty, and then
the past protection didn't help that. Perhaps breakdowns all over
the field, and then that very interceptions or the interceptions

(12:40):
late in the game didn't help either. So I just
got to keep practicing and see how it works out.

Speaker 1 (12:46):
Hostile environment this week Ford Field against one of the
top teams in the NFL, the Detroit Lions. Will talk
to you after Fred, Thanks as always.

Speaker 3 (12:54):
You know where I'll be at ready right here, ready
to go with a win. I'm calling it all that
in a while, JP, you feel the win for the win, yes, yes,
they're gonna find a way. Duval in Detroit, we'll be
screaming duvall all the way back, and how about that
