This is Cowboys storyline presented by Gillette, the official shave
of the Dallas Cowboys.
Speaker 1 (00:19):
Here's Nick Eatman.
Speaker 4 (00:26):
Hello, and welcome to a Cowboys storyline presented by Gillette.
It's Wednesday, October twenty ninth. I'm Nick Email. Let's talk
some Cowboy football. They got a big game coming up
this week. They're all big games at this point, right,
I mean, every single game, depending on what you want
to do, they're gonna be big games. There's never not
a big game. I guess I should just stop saying
that because they're all important, especially when you're at this
(00:46):
point in the season and you're not winning as many
games as you want to, and it's kind of this
up and down roller coaster that we've learned to live
with here with the Cowboys.
Speaker 1 (00:56):
That this one.
Speaker 4 (00:57):
But this game, this game's going to tell you everything
of what what this this season is probably going to be.
That's why I do think it's maybe bigger than most
because if you win against the Cardinals, it's not gonna
tell you that you are a playoff team. Lose to
the Cardinals, and then I think it'll it'll tell us
(01:18):
that that they're not for sure, and and then they're
already on the outside looking in. But but you know,
just knowing what what awaits them with the schedule and
all that, I think it. I think this is a
very very big game. It's it must win. If they
don't they don't win it, then then it's probably you know,
you can just tell this is going to be a
long season because these teams ahead of them are way better.
(01:41):
The quarterbacks are way better than the ones you're gonna face.
So you got to take care of business at home.
The good thing is Cowboys have done that. They've been
really good at home. They scored a lot of points
at home. So that's how you have to That's how
you have to balance for a defense that plays like this,
you got to be really really good on offense. And
that's what we've seen, especially at home. All right, Eight
eight five, five two nine seven is the number to call.
(02:03):
And let's start it off with Gary in New Mexico. Gary, Hey, Nick,
how are you doing.
Speaker 5 (02:10):
I'm good man? How about yourself?
Speaker 1 (02:13):
Yeah, I'm doing good? Yeah? Thank you?
Speaker 5 (02:17):
All right, man, So back in the day. The Cardinals
used to play in some pretty big games. So can
you tell me the linebacker that once returned to kickoff
ninety seven yards for a touchdown against the old Saint
Louis Cardinals.
Speaker 1 (02:29):
Yeah, he, uh, he was.
Speaker 4 (02:32):
I don't know where he was from, but he but
he it was. It was like he was from Hollywood,
you know, Hollywood.
Speaker 1 (02:37):
Yeah, yeah, doubt.
Speaker 4 (02:39):
Now let me ask you did he Is that the
play that he dunked it over the goal post or
that was a different you know idunk.
Speaker 5 (02:47):
The dunk over the gold post. He first did that
when he returned an interception seventy seven yards for a
touchdown against Tampa Bay.
Speaker 1 (02:55):
Yeah, yeah, for sure.
Speaker 5 (02:56):
And then he got he got famous for doing it.
He did it in the NFC Championship over the Rams.
He dunked on them.
Speaker 4 (03:01):
So not a lot of linebackers are dunking on the goalpost.
I'm not saying they can't. But yeah, different, No, he was.
Speaker 5 (03:10):
He was a special player, man. And you know, I've
read a lot of the I'm a big historical guy,
so I read a lot of like autobiography. I've read
every autobiography of all those old cowboy players. By far,
Thomas Anderson's autobiography is the most entertaining. I mean, there's
some stuff in there that I mean, he could not
play today, and not because of talent, but because he
(03:30):
would be suspended all the time. But that dude, if
he could, and you know, the good news on him
is later on he straightened out his life and turned
the corner. But if he could have made better choices
as a young man, he would be in the Hall
of Fame. He was that good. But but anyway, onto
this year team, which unfortunately is not that good. I was.
I was not surprised at all by the result in Denver,
(03:53):
because you know, the Cowboys offense is good, but even
even the best offenses, when you on the road and
play elite defenses, they're gonna struggle and you're gonna have
to be able. If you're gonna be a championship contender,
you're gonna have to win some games seventeen to thirteen.
And if you look at the Cowboys Super Bowl years,
you know they got you know, seventeen thirteen wins, sixteen
(04:14):
to ten wins. So the Cowboys just aren't there yet.
And you got me thinking last week when we talked
about this whole trade scenario, trade deadline deal, and you
make some good points. And then I heard somebody on
the radio last week talk about trading both ones and
a two to get two all Pro players from other teams.
(04:35):
I don't know what the realistic deal of that is.
And then he said, then you build around that. My
problem is if you trade away that much high capital,
you don't have anything left to build around that. Yeah,
and this defense, I mean, this is a tough situation,
and the defense I think is so far off. My
thought on this right now is that you just play
(04:55):
out the season. Let these young guys like ez Rock
who go and develop take all of those first. You
take all your draft capital into the next year's draft,
You re sign George Pickens, You've got your offensive line
starting to be rebuilt. Now, you use that draft capital
and you draft defensive players, and you spend big in
free agency, and you try to overhaul the defense, because
(05:17):
I don't think trading away high capital for one or
two players is even I don't even think it's going
to help them in the long run. Now, the flip
side of that is is do you trust them to
draft defensive personnel? And the track record, the last few
years is that they struggle drafting defensive players. So I
don't know what to do. I just wish they would
do something better. But I'll hang up and listen to
(05:38):
your to your thoughts. I appreciate the call.
Speaker 1 (05:40):
Thank thank you, Gary.
Speaker 4 (05:41):
What's funny is that all of the things that you said,
I mean, it all makes sense. It's all one way
to think of it. Some people don't agree, but you know,
you can tweak some of the things. But then at
the end you're like, I don't know what to do.
I just think they should do it better. And that
kind of sums up everything about what this team. And
it's tough. I mean, what are the answers. I mean,
(06:03):
we got questions, we just don't have any answers. And
and there's a lot of different ways to go. And
I think by listening to some of that that you
said that I kind of fall somewhere in between some
of that. I do think that they should trade they
you know, try to try to try to do something.
(06:25):
Try to try to make a trade and do do something,
because you know, for for those that say they don't
want them to do anything, they're gonna want them to
do something. In free agency obviously every year they do,
and so this is kind of their way of doing
something in free agency. You're just kind of getting ahead
of the game. The problem though, when you're trading away
(06:46):
like you know, like like for instance, the Packers, you know,
you can sit there and say, well, yeah, we got
Michael Parsons, so he's worth two first round picks. True,
but he's he's a lot more expensive than to first
round picks. And so that's that's the thing when you
and you're not expecting to pay a lot for those
guys until maybe they get to their next contract. So
(07:07):
that's kind of the difference between if you trade somebody
trade a first round pick for a player and get
this contract. That's you're not getting a high, high, high
contract by even drafting them in the first round. So
from a team with the salary cap, I mean that
that's one of the reasons why the Cowboys aren't just
trading first round picks for for talent. They don't have
a ton of room on the on the salary cap
(07:28):
to do that. And that's that's what you need. What
you need to be a really good team is cheap superstars.
That's what you need when you get a quarterback that
hasn't hit that contract yet and he's playing great like
Jalen Hurts did or even Dak did early on. That's
a cheap superstar, cheap quarterback, and then you can build
them with other other players. And so that's what you need.
You need as many cheap superstars as you can. And
(07:50):
it's hard to do that if you're trading away your picks.
All right, I'm a in Napa, California.
Speaker 3 (07:55):
I'm a hey, what's up, Nate? Good morning?
Speaker 1 (07:58):
What's up?
Speaker 3 (08:00):
Man? I'm always just excited to get on on, you know,
on the line with yours. It's it's a hard man
to get hold of. So give you a little bit
of flowers. You're doing a great job, man, and listen.
You know, if I can't listen live, I was to
listen to the playback and always try to call in,
but I'd limit my calls to maybe about a hundred
because I am at work, so I figure out about
a hundred. It's like, all right, it's good now it's.
Speaker 1 (08:22):
Early over there. You get to work early. It's eight
o'clock in California.
Speaker 3 (08:26):
Oh I know, man, you know what is early? Bird
gets the worm? Man, you get it going, get it
going early, usually get out early. So that's my philosophy. Man,
I don't want to go back, so I'm going to
just go forward. Being a bunch of talk about trading players.
I mean, man, again to the flowers I want to
give you. It's just like you deal with all of
(08:46):
us fans and storyliners, like we're so emotional. Rob in Vegas,
like one one week he's all in after a win, like, yeah,
we got to make these trades on defense. Next week
he's like, horrible, there's nothing we can do to fix it.
So again, just appreciate you, know, you and Chris is
(09:07):
putting up with us all well, going forward.
Speaker 4 (09:11):
That but I'll say it after the call. But but
I thank you for saying that. Thank you for saying that.
It's not always easy, but it's fun. And but I'll
talk about that a little bit after after your other
point of question.
Speaker 3 (09:24):
Yeah, my point is just really quick. I'm with you
as far as like, Man, you know, at first, I
was like, let's not do anything. We should hold on
our owner and our GM has already said we're building
for the future. I know he said, you know, we're
always open for business, but he made it he made
it clear. You know, trading Micah is your best player
(09:45):
possibly or one a best player, you know, a way
to another team. And you look at it every week.
It's like, man, somebody needs to affect the quarterback, get
after him, push him, do something. And we're talking about
that guy and we traded them. So to me, it's
like been back and forth about do we pick up
a player? Man, I don't I don't know if we
(10:08):
find that player, you know, versus our draft picks and
what's worth it and what's not, and how we're so
banged up in the secondary. I'd like to see a
trade for like a Minka Fitzpatrick or something like that,
if we are going to do something. But I'm okay with,
you know, riding out with the offense and seeing what happens.
(10:30):
If we are going to ride it out with offense
and not make any changes with defense, let's get it
over quick, man. Let's get our offensive chance to get
out there as much as possible, and let's blitz, blitz, blitz,
just bring it, you know what I mean. Like, if
they're going to beat us, let them beat us, and
then let our offense get out there and give them
a chance because there's no reason. It's so painful to
(10:53):
watch twenty yard runs and these big pass plays where
the quarterback stands back there and it's just non affected.
It's like he's playing seven on seven with no pass rush.
So all right, all right, yeah, Nick, I appreciate everything.
You and Chris are doing a great job. I got
to send you some wine. Man, You're great. Love you guys, thank.
Speaker 1 (11:14):
You, thank you so much. All right.
Speaker 4 (11:17):
I love how you said from NAPA, he's got to
send us some wine. I don't drink wine, but I
know people that do, so I do. Thank you, Chris.
Speaker 1 (11:26):
I do. Yeah, you are kind of boogie like that,
all right, you know.
Speaker 4 (11:33):
Blitzing early, blitzing late, scoring early, I mean yeah, these
are all all things that you you know that that
you want to you want to see this this team do.
I think getting getting a lead, obviously, you know, changes
the course of the game. That's why it's so important
that you know, you can say, well, I wouldn't have
mattered if they got that touchdown early on. I disagree.
(11:53):
I think it does change the flow of the game.
And so I like having the ball to start the
third quarter. All but you know, at this point if
they feel like getting the ball. You know, if they
win the toss Monday night, they're going to take the ball,
probably go and go score and try to put the
put the pressure on Arizona. And I don't know if
I disagree with that. I just know, I know I
(12:14):
like having the ball to start the third quarter. But
I'm kind of good with with whatever at this point.
All right, Brian and Kansas City's next.
Speaker 6 (12:21):
Good morning, sir, Hey Brian, how are you doing, good man?
Speaker 7 (12:26):
You know, I was thinking about you know, everybody's talking
about trades, and you know it makes sense. You know,
there's only a week left.
Speaker 6 (12:32):
Before the deadline, so I was thinking, you know, all
the big bold moves they've made over the years. Obviously,
Haley and Dion Sanders are the biggest, right and they
paid off big time, but you know there have been others.
Joey Galloway, Gry Williams. Amari was a big one. You know,
(12:53):
they just didn't pay the same dividends. But you know,
they've made a lot of those big, gigantic, you know,
swing for the fence moves.
Speaker 7 (13:01):
Yeah, sometimes they pay off and sometimes they don't, and
you just got to live with the results.
Speaker 6 (13:06):
If they don't pay off.
Speaker 7 (13:08):
But you know, those are the things that helped us
in the nineties get over the hump. You know, those
are the two moves that did it. Hey, I was
thinking for a double agent this week. I was thinking
the guy that revived his career, big, big Leonard Davis.
You know, May moved from you know, it's kind of
considered a bust on their team, and then you know,
(13:29):
came over and played guard for us and you know
had I don't know how many Pro Bowls in a row,
but I mean he hit like two or three Pro
Bowls in a row playing guard for us. That figured
you probably had a story on him other than you know,
you know, that's a guy that blocks a lot of light. Yeah,
I'll listen to what you got to say, off air man, Take.
Speaker 4 (13:49):
Care, appreciate that. Thanks for the call, Brian. Leonard Davis.
You know, Leonard Davis is one of those guys. And
I don't know how many there are. I have a
couple examples, but I mean he's one of those guys
where he's so big and strong and and you know
he played tackle in college and so you get to
the league, You're like, gotta have this guy right, and
we're gonna draft him second overall or third or fourth whatever,
(14:13):
you know, these these type of guys. And then he's
gonna have to play tackle because I mean, that's how
you justify it, and it doesn't really work out. And
then and then they turns out he's he's really a guard,
and I know you don't want to draft the guard
second overall at Arizona, but he's not a tackle, you know.
And and it happened to the NBA all the time.
They draft these guys seven to eight overall, and they're
really better coming off the bench. So you have to
(14:34):
wait till that next wave, that next contract to really
get the kind of player that they really are. Maybe
they're not a superstar, but or maybe they're not, you know,
the at the premier position in Leonard Davis. Robert Gallery
is another guy from the Raiders. I think once they
got moved him to guard, like this is where you're
supposed to be. And then as it got later on
Quentin Nelson from the Colts, they just drafted him that
(14:54):
that high and he's that good. And Zach Martin wasn't
that high, but he was still drafted high like that.
Booker as well, so it's fine to draft these guards.
I think Leonard Davis's example of that. The story that
I would say is the time that now I might
have told this earlier, when oh, now, and now I
forgot his name from uh, who's the guy we just
saw from the from the Ukraine, big old defensive tackle.
Speaker 1 (15:17):
His name escapes me.
Speaker 4 (15:18):
I can't believe that, but uh, we just saw him
the other day and he he body slammed. He body
slammed Leonard Davis into Jason Witten's ankle. They were kind
of just messing around one day at training camp and
he just say, oh, you can't pick body slam me,
and he did. He body slammed him right into right
into Jason Witten's ankle. That wasn't such a good idea.
(15:42):
But who who's my guy here? Being igor Olshansky, That's
what it was, igor Olshansky. I guess Chris isn't working today,
all right? Zach in Atlanta?
Speaker 8 (15:53):
Hey, what's up nicking Frisco?
Speaker 1 (15:54):
What's up?
Speaker 7 (15:57):
Man?
Speaker 8 (15:57):
What do we what do we want to talk about today?
Speaker 1 (16:00):
A punt return? I don't know.
Speaker 9 (16:04):
Yeah, we we could use some of those.
Speaker 1 (16:10):
In general, you know what I mean? Like, how about
just get off the field and actually have a punt return.
Speaker 8 (16:15):
Nice. Yeah, yeah, man, I obviously you set up the
top of the show. The Cardinals game is gonna kind
of be a big turning point for us.
Speaker 9 (16:27):
I have to win if we consider any sort of trades.
But I'm still holding my breath. I'm on records saying
I like Shoddy, but with a rookie head coach. I mean,
if there's any sort of wild card run to be made,
how's he going to navigate that? Obviously flues even if
we get a couple of pieces in there, do we Yeah,
(16:50):
there's so many question marks. We're all navigating this roller
coaster together. And that's what I like about storyline. I
feel validated in a lot of my frustrations. But uh man,
uh double agent for the week, piggybacking off of Brian
Kansas City. Can you take us back to the Emmett
Smith game when he returned to Dallas and when they
(17:12):
played Yeah, and that's all I got, man, take care.
Speaker 4 (17:16):
All right, man, I have a story, but but I
but I can't tell it.
Speaker 1 (17:21):
That's what sucks.
Speaker 4 (17:22):
I have a story about that game, and that's that's
kind of a tease. I'm sorry, but that, uh, that's
definitely not one for for the air.
Speaker 1 (17:30):
But man, that that that game, that was it, that
was just weird.
Speaker 8 (17:34):
You know.
Speaker 4 (17:34):
I mean there's no there's no color that stands out
more for you know, you know, for the Cowboys than
than red. You know, I mean you ever seen a
red Cowboys ster? I mean, it really really doesn't happen
unless unless we get one of those college teams that
wants to have those three guys on the side signaling plays,
you know, in some weird colors, which it's kind of
(17:56):
stupid to me, but whatever. But but Emmitt Smith's wearing
red just it wasn't it wasn't right, didn't feel good,
and he uh, you know, I don't have a whole
lot of stories where he didn't play long. I mean,
he's gotten knocked out of the game quickly, and uh,
I'm not saying he begged out of the game, but
I think he was okay with that. I don't think
he was comfortable with that whole situation and maybe that
(18:17):
that whole season. Uh, but you know, he had a
record to pad and he did, he certainly did, and
he got he got it so far out there that
I don't. Nobody's ever gonna gonna get it, gonna touch that,
and that was important to him. It always was, you know,
and so that that's fine. I really don't have a
lot of story. I don't remember much about that game,
except for maybe maybe is that the game they had
(18:40):
two safeties. I think the Cowboys had two safeties in
that game, like uh, le Roy Glover and I don't know,
Kenyon Coleman or somebody had a couple of had a
couple of safeties. I mean, maybe the last time they
had two safeties in the same game. I could be
thinking of a different game. But it was a one
sided game.
Speaker 8 (18:59):
There was.
Speaker 4 (19:00):
The story was Emmit and he didn't play much in
The Cowboys were able to win the game. Maybe even
a fleet flicker, now that I'm starting to think about that,
maybe a long touchdown to Terry Glenn that might have been.
Speaker 1 (19:12):
Maybe not anyways, all right, let's keep going Steven and
New York.
Speaker 10 (19:16):
Hey, Nick, what's up?
Speaker 1 (19:17):
How are you doing?
Speaker 10 (19:18):
You're exactly right about that game too.
Speaker 8 (19:20):
Safety was the.
Speaker 10 (19:22):
Leroy Clover and Kenyon Coleman will played for us for
a little while.
Speaker 1 (19:27):
Nice. Yeah, the score of that game was the score
you remember the score.
Speaker 10 (19:32):
Oh god, you know what twenties it was. It was
one sided. I know that. I just remember Emma getting
hammered by it.
Speaker 11 (19:40):
Yea, Roy Williams.
Speaker 10 (19:42):
I actually felt bad. I really did.
Speaker 1 (19:44):
Yeah.
Speaker 10 (19:44):
And once a player leaves the Cowboys, I you know,
that's it. But I that's one of the games. I
was like, oh, man, I hope he doesn't come back.
Speaker 3 (19:51):
Yeah, and he didn't.
Speaker 10 (19:52):
And he didn't. So November fourth can't come and go
quick enough for me because I'm just this stuff on
Twitter I do. And all the trades the Twitter gms,
I get it. The latest one is trading one of
our wide receivers. I don't know if you've seen that
one going around. Here's the thing, and I'm I know
(20:13):
you don't agree with me, but I'm one who wants
to kind of stand pat. I don't want to do anything.
I just I think we are where we are right
now because of questionable drafting. Drafting. We want to get
players that I think we could have gotten in the draft,
but we've had some misses. And everybody, you know what
(20:33):
I mean. And that's the thing. Everybody gives us credit
when we make the good picks, and we've taken for
granted the offensive line because we have how many did
we hit one after the other on the offensive line?
Speaker 11 (20:44):
Right now?
Speaker 10 (20:45):
It got a little bit you know where you know,
you got to remember it. Well, we need defensive help. Okay,
it was Tristan Hill. There were guys who you look
back and you're like, wow, you know, there was some missus.
So that's why I want to stand pat But at
the same time, you know, you want to say, well,
keep the draft picks. Well, look at the recent drafts
that we've had. So that's why I think it gets
(21:06):
a little, uh, kind of a contradiction. Do you follow
what I mean?
Speaker 4 (21:10):
Yeah, I mean, and I'm kind of looking at you know,
anything past the third round is kind of a crap
shoot to me. So I mean to say, oh, you
whifted on that fourth round or fifth round pick. I mean,
but but you're I mean, I'm looking at the defensive
players drafted in the first three rounds last few years. Ezraku.
We'll see Revel, We'll see and then Kneeland and Leah
Fou okay, Mazzie Smith overshown okay, and Sam Williams and
(21:38):
then Kelvin Joseph Osa Chauncey Golston, Na Sean Wright. Yeah, sorry,
sorry I did skip over one. One player drafted Michael
Harrison's good pick.
Speaker 1 (21:50):
That's a good pick. How's he doing?
Speaker 10 (21:53):
Yeah? But also the guy yeah, just you know, because
I remember things, the guy who not too many well,
I'm saying not going to do a lot of people
were not thrilled about that pick because there were two
cornerbacks if you remember who the cow Yeah. People forget
that though, but you know the Cowboys.
Speaker 4 (22:10):
Lost both of them in the last three weeks.
Speaker 10 (22:14):
Yeah, I was just thinking about that real quick on
the trivia. I lived in New York. Obviously, I go
down to Dallas a lot of twenty fourteen. I go
down there. Excellent year for the Cowboys, but Romo was
out that game against the Cardinals. They lost. But early
in the game, I think it was Carson Palmers, the quarterback.
(22:36):
I pretty sure.
Speaker 4 (22:36):
I'm on the.
Speaker 10 (22:38):
Other side of the field. He throws a pick six
and the place is going nuts and everyone's chair. The
guy next to me says, who was that? I was like,
I have no idea, And it wasn't a branding Carr.
It wasn't you know. Anyway, The guy who picked it
off for a touchdown. Was only career interception he had.
Speaker 1 (22:57):
Tyler Pattman, Wow you're doing is that Tyler Patman?
Speaker 10 (23:01):
Tyler I remember?
Speaker 1 (23:04):
Wow.
Speaker 4 (23:05):
You know what else I remember about Tyler Patman is
as Bryant thought that he could he could, uh, he
could throw some punches at practice one day and and
they got into it. And I don't know what Tyler
Patman is doing now, but he could be. He could
be in the ring somewhere.
Speaker 1 (23:22):
I mean he's got some hands.
Speaker 12 (23:23):
That was.
Speaker 1 (23:25):
Pretty sure, Tyler Patman. Yeah, it.
Speaker 4 (23:28):
Dez got into it and yeah, Des kept his helmet
on there, so yeah, Patman, but he did. Yeah, he
had that pick six. I guess that was early in
the game. Yeah, I forgot it.
Speaker 10 (23:40):
Yeah, and then another game was done after it was seven.
Not in the place going out. Cent was absolutely done.
Brandon Weedy was pretty sure Brandon Weed was our quarterback man.
Speaker 4 (23:51):
All right, thank you, Steve, appreciate that. All right, we
uh getting a little chatty today. It is probably my fault.
Were only at five calls. Got to take a break,
see if we can kind of pick up the pace
when we come back.

Dylan and Wichita falls. Dylan, what's up?
Speaker 9 (26:12):
Hey?
Speaker 10 (26:12):
Nick?
Speaker 16 (26:12):
What's going on?
Speaker 1 (26:13):
How are you doing?
Speaker 16 (26:15):
Pretty good man? All things considered from Sunday, but trying
to trying to stay positive somewhat, you know, yeah.
Speaker 1 (26:23):
For sure you can. Yeah, that's all you can be. Yep,
I haven't been to Wichita Falls in a while. I
need to get back there.
Speaker 10 (26:30):
Maybe how long has it been a.
Speaker 4 (26:32):
Couple of years? Maybe maybe if our my alumni would
actually have a good product on the field or the court, I.
Speaker 1 (26:40):
Might get a game.
Speaker 4 (26:42):
I know how I have heard those guys. Yeah, anyways,
what do you got Dylan?
Speaker 16 (26:48):
Uh? I haven't been able to listen to live, so
if I'm repeating something, I apologize, but I just wanted
to respond. I think it was Dylan from Florida asked
what are the bones to our defense? Are there any
bones to our defense? And I just want to say, yeah,
there are, Like we have a three headed monster in
our defensive tackle room. I mean Doron Bland is still
on the team, and I mean we haven't seen him
(27:09):
play all year since last year, but overshown two. You know,
these are legit pieces on our defense. You know, it
just hasn't killed together.
Speaker 1 (27:16):
Yeah.
Speaker 16 (27:16):
And the only other thing I'd add is, you know
it's easy for us to call for eber Flus's head
after what we've seen, and I know some fundamental things
have been missing, But I think that's just too convenient
of an answer, because I mean, I think the front
office when they let go of Jordan Lewis. I think
it hurt us a lot more than they thought it would,
and we just need to build around some of these
(27:38):
pieces we already have. And I just don't know if
going out and getting a new coordinator is going to
be the solution, going out and hunting down a new
coordinator installing another defense for another year. I just think
we should build around what we already have instead of
scrapping it and throwing it away. I don't know, I
just kind of want to hear Europe.
Speaker 4 (27:55):
Yeah, that's I mean, that's fair too. I mean, thanks
for the call, Dylan. And you know, thinking about this
just the other day. If if you know, let's say
that eber Flus is let go at some point, maybe
it's this year, maybe next year, whatever, you know. I mean,
the the narrative in a few years is going to
be they got him in here, here he comes in.
(28:16):
He's like, I got some players now, you know, I
got I got Michael Parsons, I got Trayvon Diggs. We
just resigned Osa, you know, we we we got some
we got some guys, you know, and the overshown will
be back, Doroan Bland.
Speaker 1 (28:28):
We're gonna sign him.
Speaker 4 (28:30):
I got some dudes, got veteran safeties, and it started obviously,
then they traded Mike away, and then you know, and
then Digs never really played much, and the safeties all
got hurt and I got fired, you know, And it's
more truth than that. But because I'm kind of I
don't want to be hypocritical here, but I'm just saying
that that's one side of it, Like especially the Michael thing.
(28:52):
You know, I come here, I'm installing a defense. Michael
doesn't ever show up, never practices, never here. We're trying
to figure is he gonna be here?
Speaker 1 (28:59):
Is he not?
Speaker 4 (29:00):
They gotta figure this out. Then they trade them. And
now now they got a bunch of pass rushers that
that are just okay, are just average at best. So
that's not really a fair narrative toward him. On the
flip side, we've seen defenses that they didn't have a
lot of players, a lot of injuries and all that,
and not as not as bad as this.
Speaker 1 (29:21):
They still figure out a way to kind of like,
all right, well.
Speaker 4 (29:23):
Let's piece this thing together, and we at least we
had an offense we could lean on and.
Speaker 1 (29:28):
Bend, but don't break. But they break.
Speaker 4 (29:31):
That's what that's the problem this This defense breaks, I
mean Ben's and it breaks. That's what's bad about this defense.
It's a bed and break defense. And I don't think
I've ever said that before. All right, Rick in Massachusetts.
Speaker 17 (29:45):
Hey, Deck, you do them good?
Speaker 1 (29:47):
How are you?
Speaker 17 (29:48):
I'm good, I'm good. I was thinking about this all
day yesterday, rading stuff especially from Patrick.
Speaker 9 (29:55):
No.
Speaker 17 (29:56):
See, there's a think angling as the safety clues. I know,
we have five safeties that are hurt whenever we only
got really one safety with Bell. They're going to try
to use some of the corners to practice all week
at safety. The other thing, too, is looking at the
other thirty two teams, their practice squads, see if they
(30:17):
have any safeties we could pull or whatever something like that,
or trade for a safety. Those are the immediate three
things they could do.
Speaker 4 (30:28):
Yeah, and and kind of hope to get some of
these guys back, you know. I mean, Donovan Wilson should
be getting back soon, same with Juan Yer. Thomas Malik
Hooker is available to start his window back. I mean
he could return, but I don't think he's that. I
don't think he's there yet. So they're gonna get some
(30:49):
guys back. You're right about you know, they could still
bring another safety in the reason why I'm thanks for
the call, Rick, Let's keep it going back. The reason
why I think trading for safety could make sense is
that it's not just a problem for right now. I'd
have to look at the contracts, but I don't. I mean,
Donald Wilson signed three years ago, Hooker signed two seasons ago,
(31:15):
three three years ago, really three seasons ago. So both
those guys, I don't know if they're gonna be back
next year.
Speaker 1 (31:23):
So I think it's an issue. Safety is an issue.
Speaker 4 (31:25):
So if you're gonna you know, if you're trading for
somebody that can come in and help immediately and he's
gonna be here a couple of years, I'm fine. I'm
fine with that because you're gonna need some help at safety.
And that's not a position typically that you love drafting
in the first round. Now some maybe Green Bays pick
or wherever you're picking it, there's a there's a safety
that's worth it. Sure, I wouldn't be you know, it
(31:46):
wouldn't be against it. But I'm saying that, say, you
got to look at next year too, and safety might
be a positioned that you're gonna have a big need.
All right, Alex in South Bay.
Speaker 18 (31:55):
Hey, what's up there? What's going on?
Speaker 1 (31:56):
How are you doing?
Speaker 18 (31:58):
I'm good man, everything is good. I just want to
touch on something that was brought up yesterday because its
actually something I was thinking about. I was trying to
get in and discuss it. Someone had mentioned about no
punning and I kind of agree with that to an
extent because I want to focus on special teams. When
Bones was here, every time Anger tried it out to
the field, I stayed glued to my TV because there
(32:19):
was a fifty to fifty chance that Bones might come
up with the play to get those five yards or
whatever it was, fourth and whatever. Now when Anger trots
out there, I can go get a soda, I can
go to the restroom. I know it's going to be
a punt. What do you think about that? That's something
that it needs to be. I don't know about implementing
because I don't even know what the special team's coordinator is.
But is that something that you kind of looked at like, yeah,
(32:42):
that could be an issue or not an issue, but
it's something that should be looked at.
Speaker 4 (32:48):
Yeah, I mean, I don't think it's going I don't
think the special teams has been as as dynamic at all.
Speaker 1 (32:55):
You don't even know his name.
Speaker 18 (32:56):
Right, so I don't even know his name.
Speaker 4 (32:59):
Yeah, Nick Sorenson his name, and he's got you know
he's got he's got pretty much the same type of
weapons already.
Speaker 8 (33:08):
You know.
Speaker 4 (33:08):
Now now Turpin hasn't been there, that's been a big
big miss. When when Turpin's not out there, you know,
I think even you know, they haven't got off the field.
That's the problem. They don't get off the field for
the pump return because I think it's a difference, so
you can get off the field to have him standing
back there. I think he's a legit weapon, but that hasn't.
Speaker 3 (33:26):
Really happened as much, right right, I gotcha.
Speaker 18 (33:29):
And then last thing, I think, I wonder if Chris
can hit me with the here we go, because once
that started, I was never able to get one. If
I can hear one of those, and I'll get off
the line and have a good day.
Speaker 4 (33:39):
You ask, you receive, all right, let's keep it going,
doctor Sunshine.
Speaker 1 (33:43):
And for worth is next?
Speaker 19 (33:46):
Good morning, Nick? Are you doing I'm doing well? Nick?
You know, just talked to you last night, but I
wanted to call you today and with a thought provoking question.
We know we can commission rates about this seasons, but
as we as we can't and then after a while
it would be nice to think about something in the past.
So I'm want to fill a question that's you, okay,
(34:08):
a fantasy team of all Cowboy players from the beginning
of the of the of the franchise. I mean, I mean,
I go back to our I'm one of the few
people that remember Angel La Baron watching him on TV.
But if you could put together a fantasy team, and
I don't mean like fantasy that we play on the internet,
(34:30):
but where you had one player throughout the history at
each position, and you could only have one quarterback, one
right guard and pick the twelve players, and it might
be fun for your storylinebackers to participate too, to put
together their all time offensive defensive team at each position.
Speaker 1 (34:53):
Just going just all time or going back in.
Speaker 11 (34:56):
This all the time?
Speaker 19 (34:57):
Yeah, just your number, want you're tied end, and your
your guards and you tackle your quarterback everybody who would
you pick?
Speaker 4 (35:07):
Well, uh, yeah, that's a good one. That's something we'll
we'll we'll talk about what what would what would be yours?
I mean not all eleven, but what what would be
yours quarterback?
Speaker 19 (35:17):
Well, well, my quarterback would be Roger y uhm, it's
my running back. And uh my wide receivers are Erwin
and uh Death Bryant and Drew Pearson.
Speaker 8 (35:31):
Okay, and my.
Speaker 19 (35:32):
Tight end is is Wining and and my I'll just
go ahead and give you my my tackles are flows
Al Adams and Rachel right. Uh, Stepanovsky's my center. Larry
Allen and and Nate are my guards.
Speaker 1 (35:47):
Love it? Not gonna lose that many games with that offense,
for sure.
Speaker 19 (35:51):
Well, and wouldn't that be great if you could do
that and really have that game and it was somehow
simulated and flavorate packers they're all the time bar stars.
Speaker 4 (36:03):
Yeah yeah, Now I don't know who they're you know,
obviously they get to do that too, and yeah yeah, yeah,
Michael there.
Speaker 19 (36:11):
So it's just the ultimate fantasy game. And I just
sound like you tell that out to you today, And
I hope, I hope the storylinebackers appreciate what you do,
because uh even amaze me con tribute you know, players
that I never even remember.
Speaker 1 (36:30):
Yeah, well that's why I got back grades in school.
Speaker 6 (36:32):
Right.
Speaker 19 (36:33):
Oh no, you didn't get that grade.
Speaker 1 (36:38):
That all right?
Speaker 19 (36:40):
You get a college agreement?
Speaker 1 (36:41):
Yes, all right, Okay, let's go to break here real
quick on storyline. We can come back right after this.

Just got a call.
Speaker 4 (38:12):
There from that was my dad if you if you
didn't notice that, that's his name is tam Baby goes
by Doctor Sunshine as well. And uh, I don't have
we don't have time to go through all the all
the like all time team. But to me, I mean no,
no real surprises. It's got to come down to how
old you are too, and and and any players that
you've seen. There's probably not a lot of younger Cowboy
(38:33):
fans that are going to sit there and be like
mel Renfro. For sure, mel Renfro, which me either because
I never saw him play, but I'm sure it was
pretty dang good. He's in the Hall of Fame. And
uh he played safety, corner, did a little bit of everything,
so he was good, but now you know, for me,
I'm Aikman would be the quarterback, and Aikman and and
Emmett and Drew Pearson and Michael Irvin and Witting and
(38:58):
then your offensive line, you know, I like flows l
for sure, Stepnowsky, Nate gotta go with Nate, Larry Allen
and another tackle probably Eric Williams. So that's probably pretty
much just that nineties offensive line for sure. All right,
(39:19):
let's go to Javan in Huntsville, Texas.
Speaker 11 (39:22):
Yes, sir, how are you doing it good?
Speaker 1 (39:24):
How are you?
Speaker 11 (39:25):
I'm all right? Two things? Just how much do you
feel like the defense is struggling based on a lack
of buying from the defensive players, because it seems like
sometimes they're they're out of position. How much do we
feel like it might be a little bit of a
hero ball where people are trying to make plays instead
of actually playing as a whole unit.
Speaker 4 (39:46):
I think there's there's something to be said for that.
I mean, I think that's kind of the world that
we're in, you know. I mean, especially when you when
you think about it, you get called up from the
practice squad, here's your chance you're elevating. You don't get
elevated three times, get elevated to come in here and play,
and you're gonna you know, you're not trying to go
make a play. Yeah, And I think I don't think
it's a it's out of spite. I think people are
(40:07):
trying to make plays. But sometimes you go try to
make a play and you end up you end up
getting the wrong gap and it's a thirty yard touchdown.
So yeah, I think that that happens a lot in
the NFL. It happens with this team too. For sure,
you got anything else you could.
Speaker 11 (40:25):
Oh the other question was, at this point, with where
we're at, how much better do you think we would
just be if we just start sending the kitchen think
at the quarterback, just get up there, mug the line.
Speaker 4 (40:38):
Yeah, I mean at this point, you know, that's why
I would have liked to have Trayvon Diggs back Digs
and Bland as you as your corners and then just
go just go stack the line and just get after him.
You know, that's what they should have done to me
with Carolina, that that that's unthinkable that they didn't just
just blitz Bryce Young all day long and he should
(41:01):
have won that game. I think but you know, just
stack the line and stack where you go down and
just say, all right, you just go go make plays.
And I don't think you would have done it on
a consistent basis for sure, But yeah, that's probably where
they're at, you know, and we'll see what kind of
changes they make. But I do think they're going to
have to, you know, get after these these quarterbacks because
(41:21):
if you just give them time, they're all going to
get open. Receivers get open, the quarterback's gonna find it.
So you have to help. I think by doing that
it helps your pass rusher and your secondary kind of
at the same time. And I have a problem with
my offensive line that I said, because I don't know
I'm not ready for that yet, because Zach Martin's got
to be on there, and I think Tyron Smith's got
to be on there. So I need to rethink that
(41:42):
a little bit. I might be playing guys out of position.
Larry Allen might have to play tackle for me. Sorry,
Flow love you. I'm good on that, maybe Tyran Tyron Smith,
but but good backup though, for sure.
Speaker 1 (41:55):
All Right.
Speaker 4 (41:56):
Dylan in Northport, Florida, Dylan, what's up? How you doing?
Speaker 11 (42:01):
You right?
Speaker 1 (42:03):
Didn't you already call in the show. I'm kidding, but.
Speaker 21 (42:05):
You know I wasn't gonna call, And then I had
the other the other Dyllan call and was talking about
my bones comment. So I had to just how to
clarify these bones the bone situation.
Speaker 1 (42:16):
Okay, you know we.
Speaker 21 (42:22):
Have bones, Okay, but we got like a collar bone.
We got some like Falange's right, we're missing femurs, we're
missing like a ribcage.
Speaker 7 (42:29):
Right.
Speaker 21 (42:29):
If over shown can come back, he can be a
major part of the defense, right, And I think Land
is important. Right, Maybe he's your collar phone. Colophones are important,
I guess, so, like we don't have like a do
like also got paid and he took a discount, so
Matt credit to him, I guess. But you know, he
got paid to kind of be a dude. And he
looks like he was a beneficiary of the mice apart
Micah Parson's effect like everybody else was. He doesn't look
(42:51):
like a guy who's going to take on double teams,
which he is right now, he's getting double team into oblivion.
So I don't know where Kenny Clark is helping out
with that. I see him on the ground a lot
in fortune, But like, I just don't look at this
roster even unhealthy, with a lot of a lot of
guys that you can like count as cornerstone players outside
of maybe Bland and an over Jean. If overshone can
be just the same guy, even even eighty percent of
(43:13):
what he was, he'll still be a stud I think.
So hopefully he can come back. But whether they trade
for a guy or draft, do they need a cornerstone player.
They got rid of DeMarcus Lawrence, they got rid of
Jay Lou obviously make a Parsons. Those were all cornerstone.
Maybe not jay Lou, but Parsons and uh and d
Law were definitely cornerstone type pieces. And jaylu was a
really big locker room guy. So they lost all that
(43:34):
and they just they haven't replaced them, I don't think, unfortunately.
Speaker 3 (43:37):
Just yet.
Speaker 21 (43:37):
So that's what I'm looking for. As far as bones
bones go.
Speaker 4 (43:40):
Yeah, no, I hear them, and and that's an overshown
would be one of those type of guys. I mean,
if you're if you're saying, if you're if you're counting,
you know, DeMarcus Lawrence and and Jordan Lewis in that
group you're not talking about just Pro Bowl guys. You're
talking about cornerstones that are that are leaders that that
you know, set sets the tone for your for your defense,
(44:03):
not only how they play, but how they carry themselves.
So Overshown would be great at that. And I think
Deron Bland he's not a vocal leader, but I mean
he goes out and kind of does his does his thing,
and he you know, he's made some plays. He's he's
made some nice tackles this year too, on top of
like interception for a pick six and all that. So
so you you've got guys like that. I think Osa
(44:24):
would be there, but you know, dogs would be also
some guys that you need to You need some of that.
And and I think that's what Jordan Lewis was and
they they certainly miss miss him there, you know, in
that spot.
Speaker 1 (44:38):
But you know, you you've got to You've got to
find them.
Speaker 4 (44:41):
You know, these are third rounders, a third round pick,
and he developed them, d Law, second round pick.
Speaker 1 (44:46):
He developed them.
Speaker 4 (44:47):
That's what what this team needs and and and they
have with Deron Bland.
Speaker 1 (44:52):
But you got to get more of those.
Speaker 4 (44:53):
You need you need more of those, all right, Uh,
Lester in Minnesota will be our last call.
Speaker 1 (44:56):
Lester, what's up? Man?
Speaker 22 (45:00):
Hey, I'll be pretty quick because I got a lot
to say, so I'll try tomorrow, but I just I'll
use just say a couple of things right now. Hey,
I think that we need to as far as the
defensive line is all this rotation of the ends, I
think we just need to stick to a defensive line
of four, you know, four people then didn't rotate the
(45:22):
other people in UH as needed. And one other question
is is BB gonna play this week or what? Do
you hear them go? Cowboys?
Speaker 1 (45:32):
All right?
Speaker 4 (45:33):
Appreciate it, you know, d line rotation is is always tricky.
You know, you you want, I mean, you'd love to
have eight guys and you just go four and four
and just rotate them. And you know, when the Cowboys
won the Super Bowl, excuse me, when they won Super Bowl,
you know back in the nineties, those guys, I mean
they had backup. Leon Lett was back up, you know,
and and and Jimmy Jones and those guys that that
(45:54):
would just be coming in waves, you know after you
to see us. And of course Haley told where you know,
you had a lot of guys and that's what you want.
But if you don't have you know, if if there's
a huge drop off between one and two and you know, five, six, seven, eight,
(46:15):
then then obviously you're gonna have some some issues there
and and and we've seen it. We've seen it when
you have guys like Micah and d Ware, you're like,
all right, when they're not in there, You're like, wait,
what what's going on here?
Speaker 1 (46:25):
Why?
Speaker 4 (46:25):
You know, why is the offense going all the way
down the field? I mean when they need a break,
they certainly need a break. And so figuring out how
to do that rotation the right way is always is
always key because at this point, you know, unfortunately I
don't know, there's a big difference between one and eight.
Speaker 1 (46:44):
You know, that's and that's not a good thing.
Speaker 4 (46:47):
You know, it sounds like it could be if if one,
two and three were really good and then you know,
but that's not the case. And so when they're just
rotating to rotated and nothing really changes there, So all right,
and then bebe uh. I get the sense he's going
to be back. I mean, I know he he said
he told me last week, Hey, I'm gonna try to
(47:09):
play this game against Denver. Well, they that was maybe
never in the cards that they shut that down, but
with his his hopes of playing, and he did some
snaps with with the first team and he was kind
of they were rotating, so you would think, you know,
if you might have a shot at this game, they
hold you back.
Speaker 1 (47:27):
You got a whole other week in an extra day,
and he's needed. They need him, they need they need him.
Speaker 4 (47:34):
In the center there to to kind of help with communication,
help with with some of these big defensive line fronts.
So yeah, I think if he's ready to go, if
he's ready then then and I think he will. I
don't think this is a situation where you say, man,
one more game, you got to buy we Yeah, it
could be back. If we get one more game with
the bye, we then they're all coming back.
Speaker 1 (47:56):
Now, you know.
Speaker 4 (47:57):
I think this is this is a huge game. If
he's ready go play. Jerry Jones did say this week
that he thinks this will be the healthiest that the
team has been this year. So that being said, I'm
imagining that Beebie is gonna be one of those guys
that does come back. All right, good show, guys. We
had a little slow start, but we picked it up,
did a did a nice job with twelve calls, and
(48:17):
we'll see if we can do better than that tomorrow.
For Chris Beam, I'm Nick Eatman. We'll see you tomorrow
on Cowboys storyline.
Speaker 2 (48:24):
This has been a production of dallascowboys dot Com and
the Dallas Cowboys Football Club.
