This season has shown us all they need to get more great players and there’s no better place to do that than the first round. The fans agree the Cowboys need to make sure and keep those first-rounders and put less focus on the second round and beyond.

Speaker 1 (00:05):
The following.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
He is a production of Dallas Cowboys dot Com and
the Dallas Cowboys Football Club. Cowboys This is Cowboys Storyline
presented by Gillette, the official shave of the Dallas Cowboys.

Speaker 1 (00:22):
Here's Nick Eatman. Hello and welcome to Cowboys Storyline presented
by Gellette. I'm Nick Eatman. It's Monday, December twenty second.
Cowboys lose a tough one. I don't know if it's tough.
Maybe it's tough for you guys. Maybe it wasn't. But
they lost thirty four seventeen to the Chargers. Man, that

(00:45):
sucks nobody. I want to see them lose to more
than that. You know, it's one of those This is
one of those seasons where I can't remember remember the
Cowboys being out of it with three games to go,

(01:05):
and of course that happened Saturday night. And even in
the really bad years, like worse than this, it felt
like the Cowboys still had some kind of weird chance.
I mean, even the last game of the year, if
you remember in twenty twenty, I believe there was an
outside shot that they could maybe get in and then
they finished six and ten, but they still, you know,

(01:26):
we're fighting til the very end. So three games to
go like this, a lot of decisions, you know, most
teams don't have to make, or the Cowboys really haven't.
Haven't done that in a while, and so they're gonna
have to make some decisions based off personnel and who
they play and all that, and the players want to play.
Dak says, you know, he's going to play and all
that stuff. But we'll see, we'll see what happens here.

(01:49):
Short rest going into Washington. So Washington's banged up as
anybody in the league, it seems like. So it's gonna
be it's gonna be interesting to see how the Cowboys
kind of navigate this last two games going up against
Washington and the Giants are eight eight eight f five
two two nine seven. Let's go to Michael and Bowling
green Man.

Speaker 3 (02:10):
This is crazy. Three days from now, got to go
back on the go on the road, play another game.
Two teams that that are eliminated. I'm feel sorry for y'all.
Y'all got to go and watch two teams that you know,
both eliminated on Christmas. It's just I don't know, it's

(02:33):
just terrible, I believe, I mean, you know, I'll probably
watch it this still, it's like seems like a waste.
It's a it's a it's a holiday. But uh, let
me ask you real quick, what do you think about
that if Dak's last two games, if he does five

(02:54):
yards better than Stafford, it'd be the first Cowboys quarterback
ever to finished the season with the most yards in
the season, first one ever.

Speaker 1 (03:06):
Yeah, I have a hard time thinking that that he'll
get that many you know reps. I know that they
you know, Dak says he wants to play. But you know,
if you saw, I mean, they sat down seventeen and
they put Milton in, and you know, I think that
there's some people that want to see Milton going into

(03:26):
next year, to just see him a little bit more.
But he can sling it. I mean, he threw that
that deep ball to CD and it got negated because
it was a PI, but CD lined up off sides.
But yeah, if he you know, I'm I don't know,
I don't know what the Rams, if the Rams are
going to keep Stafford in, and I mean that feels

(03:48):
like they're going to have to play this out for
the for the you know, for the one seed or whatever.
I don't know, trust me, I know the Cowboys are
out of it, but on top of that, I don't
really know all the all the all the stand there,
But yeah, I mean I would have thought that at
some point in sixty something year, sixty sixty six seasons,

(04:09):
I guess that somebody would lead the league in the
Cowboys history with passing yards. But I know obviously had
some runners do it, but not not the passer, so
that that would be interesting. You know, I saw that
the stat where the Cowboys were actually found the stat myself,
so I didn't see it. I found it. But the

(04:30):
Cowboys that had two one thousand yard receivers, a thousand
yard runner in a four thousand yard passers only the
second time that's happened, and Dak is to be in
the quarterback both times twenty nineteen and then twenty twenty five,
and both times they didn't make the playoffs. So all
these stats, all these yards, all these this you know,
milestone type things, they don't lead to wins. And then

(04:54):
you know, Michael, I mean, thanks for saying that. I
guess about feeling sorry for us, but I mean I
trust me when I tell you, I mean, don't feel
sorry for me, like like you can feel sorry for
other people, what not for me. I believe me, nobody
loves Christmas Day more than me. Nobody loves being there
and with their family and the kids all over there

(05:17):
and the paper wrappers, everything and toys. I love that.
And it's it's going to be taken from us this
year on that day, But the next day it'll feel
the same, hopefully, hopefully it'll feel the same, and hopefully
it'll be the same, and it'll be it'll be great,
and you know, we'll talk about it more. Other people,
I guess call in about it, but I just I don't.

(05:40):
I don't feel bad about it, all right, Uh, davey
on and Illinois.

Speaker 4 (05:43):
Next, Hey, what's that big job?

Speaker 1 (05:46):
Hey? How you doing what it do?

Speaker 4 (05:51):
I'm all, I'm I'm not all right, but I'm okay.

Speaker 5 (05:56):
H m hm.

Speaker 4 (05:59):
It's going to be. It's gonna be along off season
once again. It's been thirty years of pain. But uh,
I really wanted to see the fight yesterday and I
don't know what happened. I just really don't. I really
don't understand how we have nothing on the line but

(06:20):
we still come out and come flat. We have two
halves of one half of good, good football, the second
half of just I don't know, spressing with the offense.
And I'm you know, last couple of weeks now we
started to look at Shotty light, what's up?

Speaker 6 (06:35):
What's up?

Speaker 7 (06:36):
Bro?

Speaker 4 (06:38):
The offense ain't really cooking like it needs to be
cooking because we already know the defenses. It is what
it is. We're gonna still for Murray out there, but
we need offense at least I do a little something. Yeah,
So it was a tough watch yesterday. So I guess
last class couple of weeks, we're gonna probably see that
that much, especially in the last game. I'm hoping they

(07:00):
play him in the Washington game, but we'll see how
long he goes. It'll be a blowout because there's two
teams that really got nothing to play for, really getting
to play for but thing washing on their third quarterback
of Mary. Other team make it back. But I really so,
I guess Christmas Christmas game? What what are the things

(07:22):
you're looking forward to see? Maybe before the future.

Speaker 1 (07:25):
Yeah, all right, all right, Davian, thanks thanks for the call.
You know, I mean for the for the future. I
mean when you when the first thing that popped up
when you said that was just revel I don't know,
you know, and now you got to make sure he's okay.
I mean, how you know he I think he's he's fine.
He's gonna be playing through him. He's a guy there

(07:47):
that you you want to you know, you want him
to get out there and get the reps and develop.
And you know, I'd like to see Tyler Giton get
back out there. I mean, just just because he and
I think he needs to. He needs to do that now.
It'll be interesting to see. But this Tyler Smith situation,

(08:08):
if he's going to play, I mean, it was out
of necessity and they wanted their five best linemen out there.
But something makes me think maybe, you know, maybe maybe
they do look at this long term. And I've said
all along, I think he's a guard. I think he's
I think he's amazing where he can do both. But

(08:32):
it's one thing to do both. It's another thing to
be elite at both. And there's a reason why Zach
Martin didn't want to do it. Jack Martin was pretty
adamant about it. I'm a guard. Could he play tackle?

Speaker 7 (08:44):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (08:44):
And he did a couple of times. Larry Allen moved
out there, Larry Allen moved back to gard and that's
where they were great and that's why they're both going
to be in the Hall of Fame, those two. If
Tyler Smith can be a great left tackle, okay, all
day long, let's do it. If he and they got
to make sure to the contract right, because they did

(09:05):
a contract for him being one of the best guards.
They didn't do that for tackle, so they got to
make sure his work and he even I think alluded
to that, like you know what what it is worth
is and all that. So long as that that's right,
I'm fine with that. However, but he's got he can't
just be a good left tackle. I mean wherever he's
going to be elite and all pro, that's where he

(09:25):
needs to be. And if he can do that, great,
But because I think you can find a guard, think
about if you were drafting late in the first round.
You're drafting late in the first round and try to
get a tackle, good luck, and they tried with Geiton
it's not working out yet. You get a guard in
the first round, even if it's late, you're probably gonna
get a really good one. So the value there, I'd

(09:47):
be okay with that. Again, the caveat is he's got
to be elite. He's got to be elite. I mean
wherever he is going to be elite is where he
needs to play. All right, Raza in Virginia is next Rosa.

Speaker 8 (10:00):
Hey, Chris, how you doing? Happy holidays?

Speaker 1 (10:03):
How are you doing?

Speaker 9 (10:04):
Nick? Nick?

Speaker 10 (10:05):
Nick?

Speaker 8 (10:06):
I know, yeah, good good good. So last time yesterday's game,
uh just gave me that. So basically I want to
just talk about because the holiday is my holiday wish list.
After watching yesterday's game, I would hope we get a
new DC just I don't know someone that. I just

(10:27):
think we need a new DC and just revamp that
whole defense. Another holiday wish list I would have is
we can sign GP with this offseason with no drama.
I would like to have a drama free contract negotiation
if that's possible. And then and then on Javonte Williams,
I think I wouldn't. I like him. I want to

(10:49):
go over like five million for him. I think the
past couple of years we've had two running backs that
hit us hit a thousand yards.

Speaker 11 (10:56):
That you know, didn't go over the banks.

Speaker 8 (10:58):
I think we can do that again or may be
draft a rookie in this draft, and then that's like
my offseason wishless and uh. And then just stack up
on defense and get this defense right for next year,
because I think if you can fun DP, this offense
has mostly basically all the pieces we need. We saw
that this year, and just you know, shack up on

(11:20):
defense and then let's let's see what happens next year.
And then I just one quick question for you. I'll
listen off there. What's your favorite moment you've had in
this rivalry Commander's Cowboys rivalry?

Speaker 3 (11:32):
Thank you?

Speaker 1 (11:33):
Thank you well that that's an easy one RASA for me,
because I mean I've said all along, it's not just
a favorite game in the robbery, it's my favorite game
of all time in the history of working. Here is
the first game I ever covered, you know, for that
was a regular season game, and it was Washington nineteen
ninety nine. I mean, it's it's obviously my my favorite

(11:54):
and for a lot of reasons, because you know, I
love you know, I love college football, and I loved
watching rocket Ismael. I mean, rocket Is Mall was awesome, man.
I mean that I wasn't really a Notre Dame fan,
but I rooted for them just because he was just
such a fun player to watch, and so you know,

(12:15):
I thought they were gonna maybe get him in ninety
one and it didn't happen in the CFO and went
to other places all that, and here I am. I
start working for the team in ninety nine and they
signed Rocket and I'm like, wow, this is awesome. And
so that whole game, I mean, em and Michael Troy,
they they're the reason that the copies were down twenty one,
They're the reason they came back tied. A game gets overtime,

(12:37):
Rocket wins it with a seventy five yard bomb. I
mean that was my very first game first, you know,
road Trip and all that, and you're just like, wow,
this is what's going to be like and and it
wasn't really, but that was that was amazing and I'll
never forget that one. So that's my favorite game and
of all time. And so obviously the favorite Washington game.

(12:58):
Got a wishlist there in New DC. Okay, sign GP
and don't go overboard on Javante. I don't think they
will go overboard because I think they see what you see,
you know, like, Okay, we're gonna sign this guy for
cheap and he has a really good year. They you know,
Rico dal had a good year. I mean, so it's

(13:19):
three guys in a row, three different players have had
one thousand yard rushing seasons. It's the most in Cowboys history.
I think it tied another year. But they've never had four. Yeah,
because in fourteen, DeMarco Murray had a huge year, McFadden
in fifteen, and then obviously Zeke and sixteen. But they've
never had four consecutive guys that have had a thousand

(13:42):
yard seasons in a row. And then Tony Poler did it.
Rico Davante. I'd like to see Javonte back, but again,
like you said, it's got to be at the right
price on that one. All right, let's go back to
the phone line. Chris, call him up. I can't. I
can't pull it up. I know we have a color les.

Speaker 11 (14:01):
What's up, Less, what's up?

Speaker 9 (14:04):
Nick?

Speaker 1 (14:04):
How are you doing?

Speaker 7 (14:06):
Hey?

Speaker 10 (14:06):
I'm doing good man? Uh? My boys lost, but you
know whatever, but we still got next year. Always, I
want to I want to just go back to something
I said a couple of years ago, and I've just
been holding my my thoughts since then. I really believe
Tyler Smith for what we have right now, he should

(14:29):
be the left tackle. Rather have a good left tackle
than the left tackle. That's kind of questionable and maybe
not great, but good at least good. This would be
my lineup for the offensive line starting to starting a
training camp with what we have now. I know it's
changed because people could leave or whatever, but this would
be my starting lineup what we have now, Tyler Smith

(14:52):
at left tackle, still left guard, Phoebe Thinner, Booker, Guidon Uh.
If we don't half steal, I say putting Nate at
left guard, starting to let at training camp what we
have now. I also want to say something about what
I was talking about the other day about leadership and

(15:15):
trading people or getting rid of them, and they may
be a leader or whatever. No, we don't know that.
Nick Elsa's fans don't know that. But the people who
are evaluating them, the Cowboys upper echeline of whoever evaluates,
they should know who the leaders are. Okay, we don't know,
of course, but they should know and they should have
a replacement for them.

Speaker 7 (15:37):
If that's the.

Speaker 10 (15:37):
Case, Cowboys should win on Christmas. Merry Christmas, everybody go.

Speaker 1 (15:44):
Cowboys all right, all right, thank you, Lester. Yeah, I
guess you're carrying over a conversation from last week about
the leadership, and I can't remember exactly how how that
went down. And you know, leadership has done in its
own and different ways too. I mean, and that's one
thing I remember saying. But you know this, this team's

(16:06):
got to I said this on the radio this morning
and kind of turned into a rant, but I'll say
it again here. I think one of the things that
needs to change with this football team and the philosophy
and all that kind of stuff, there's one thing if
I'd like to see differently. I mean, yeah, I'd like

(16:26):
to see some some changes on maybe a little bit
more aggressive free agency wise, because I do think you
know that it's adapted a little differently now than it
has in the past. But I would like to see
a little less focus on the combine results and the

(16:49):
measurables and traits and all that stuff. And a guy
runs a four two nine, and this guy only runs
a four to four to one, okay, But who loves football,
who absolutely he hates to lose, Who is going to
put in every ounce of their time and effort to
go and be the best football player. I'm really tired

(17:11):
of seeing these second round picks, third round picks, these
guys that you're trying to steal first round talent. You're
trying to you know, this guy, Oh, he's just as
good as this guy, but he's in the second round
because of this. And then a lot of times it's character,
or it's an injury or any kind of off the

(17:31):
field issues or just whatever it is, just doesn't have
what it takes to be that first round pick, really
good player. I don't know, has it worked out? I mean,
really has it worked out? I mean Trayvon Diggs, I
don't know if you would even put in them in
that category. And you know, you're starting to see some
of the reasons why he didn't make it in the

(17:51):
first round, but you also saw some of the reasons
why he was that. You know, so he Trayvon Diggs
is kind of a tough one. But I mean some
of the other guys that they drafted in the second
round and third round like that, I'd rather not do that.
Give me a player that absolutely hates to lose, because
if you hate to lose, even if you're not as fast,

(18:12):
not as strong, whatever, but you're still a really good
player and you're gonna do everything it takes to win.
If you care about football, you're gonna care about football
on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday. You're gonna do everything
you can to go out there and succeed and overachieve.
And I think if you just look around, and body
language is tough to tell, but so many times you
look at these guys, it doesn't look like they care.

(18:36):
It really doesn't. And they need more of those guys.
And so they're a little bit slower on their forty
time or a little bit less on their bench press,
They'll they'll figure it out. They'll be the ones in
the weight room all all year in March, April, May,
they'll be in here. They'll be in here and make
a tournament corner. From year one, year two, year three,
they'll do it. You got to get those guys. And again,

(18:58):
I don't care if if they don't maybe don't have
the same type of stuff. I mean, you still got
to be a good player. I'm not saying just just
draft all these you know, these boy scouts. I'm not
saying that. What I'm saying is is that they need
I think they need to shift the focus a little
bit on guys that absolutely one hundred percent care about football,
Because if you care about football, you're always going to

(19:18):
care and you're going to make sure that you don't
suck it'll you'll you'll go out there with a little
bit more pride, and I think that's something that definitely
needs to change. Let's go to break here on Cowboy storyline.
I'll be right back after.

It's the Cowboys storyline presented by Gillette, the official shave
of the Dallas Cowboys.

Speaker 1 (21:16):
All right back here on Cowboys Storyline presented by Gillette.
Let's get back to the phone lines. We got Josh
in Chicago. Josh what's up, Bud?

Speaker 11 (21:26):
Hey man, how you doing?

Speaker 1 (21:27):
I'm good? How are you?

Speaker 14 (21:28):
Oh?

Speaker 15 (21:28):
You know, I'm trying to get there there. Yeah, you know,
I usually try to be pretty quick in my calls,
but I might be a little long winded here. I apologize, right, Well,
I like what you.

Speaker 3 (21:38):
Were just saying.

Speaker 15 (21:38):
And I think Tyler Booker and Tyler Smith are some
guys that are kind of both. Right, they have the
physical traits, but they also love football and they study
and it's obvious, right, Like, I mean you're talking about
Tyler Smith earlier and just just look at him. I mean,
like he does it all, and he's smart and he
knows the scheme and he knows that what he has
to do.

Speaker 1 (21:57):
Can I cut you off real quick? Because those of
the guys that you drafted in the first round, because
because they love football and they have that and that
when you get to the second, third round, you're going
to miss something. And so that's that's kind of what
I'm talking about. Yeah, I love the first round picks,
but that leads me to another point. When you're done,
I'll tell you that later, yep.

Speaker 15 (22:15):
And I mean we got a good guy in the
fourth round before, right, But it's not panning out all
the time, and that's the problem. I read your article
and I'll try to link it up about the can't
be bend and break, and I think that's one of
the things that really concerns me about eber Flus into
the future and this defense is it's hard to evaluate.
Is it the scheme, is it the coach?

Speaker 5 (22:34):
Is it?

Speaker 9 (22:34):
The talent?

Speaker 11 (22:35):
Is it everything?

Speaker 15 (22:37):
And that's what concerns me about having two first round picks,
and a lot of people are saying we got to
go defense on both of these. Well, if we go
defense and eber Flus is still here and I'm not
trying to call for his job necessarily, but how do
we know we don't pick up a scheme guy and
end up with another Morse Clayborn. And that's what's really
kind of fearful for me, is what are we really
going to draft for in the future, because we don't

(22:57):
have a lot of picks, and I think we'll probably
get some compensive and we'll probably trade around and make
some more picks. But to what you're saying, you know,
you've got to get the right people who understand football
and want to play football and love this sport, right right,
And that's my biggest fear going into the next season
and my biggest concern. The other thing I'll say, and
I know you were saying at the start of the show,

(23:18):
but personally for me, you know, I deployed in twenty twenty.
I missed everything, all the holidays, all that stuff. I
think it's a load of crap to have football games
on Christmas. We don't need it as a society. We
just don't, you know, let people be home with their families.
So I hope you guys get home in time to
at least, you know, have some dessert or something or
dinner with your guys families and you know, at safe travels,

(23:40):
Merry Christmas and talk to guys next week.

Speaker 1 (23:42):
All right, thanks, Josh. I'm just different about that, I am.
I mean, I thanks for saying that. And believe me,
my wife's not happy about it. Okay. I think Chris
will say the same his wife. We're not really happy
about this situation this year. And you can say all this,

(24:04):
we can say whatever we want, sorry about how it's
going to be. But oh, I know I'll get a
phone call there at some point early in the morning
when we're in Washington and my wife's looking at Instagram
and Facebook and all these other pictures of their friends
and all this stuff, and we don't have that. And
then you know, to see whoever's playing, you know, hopefully

(24:28):
it's that, but I it's not, you know. I mean,
it'd be one thing if the game went meant a
little bit more, but that's nothing that you can predict.
I mean, Cowboys Washington this late in the season, you
would expect one of the two teams is going to
be fighting for something that's you know, asked for playing
on Christmas and all that stuff. Listen, I uh, it

(24:49):
just doesn't It doesn't really bother me.

Speaker 7 (24:53):
You know.

Speaker 1 (24:55):
We know that there's a hypocrisy when it comes to
the NFL and what they care about with with you know,
concussion protocols and things like that and safety of the players.
But you know, if they can find a way to
tap into them at market and play on a Tuesday night,
they you know that that made sense. They probably would
do it. But I just look at it from a

(25:17):
standpoint of the obligation and Dak said it perfectly. I'm
not trying to be like Dak. I mean what he
said about him obligated to go out there and play.
This is what we get to do. But but for me,
and I've always said this about Thanksgiving and I'll say
it about Christmas. You know, there are people that's their tradition.
They watch the games. They have you know, family, and

(25:39):
they you know, they eat and all that stuff and
they watch football. That's what they do. There's some people
that do all their Christmas and then that night they
go to the movies. There are some people that are
going to be flying on airplanes and on Christmas Day. Well,
somebody's got to do it. Someone's got to fly it,
someone's got to work it. Someone's got to work the
movie theater. Someone's got to be get the games. Someone's

(25:59):
got to do it to give these people, you know,
their tradition. And I'm okay with that. For me, I'm
okay with that. I'm okay with that obligation. I mean,
we have a really awesome job. We really do. I mean,
it's an awesome job. I got to take my daughter,
who you know, eighteen years old, she's in freshman in college.
She comes down, she gets to go to the game.

(26:20):
She was at the game yesterday. She sit there. Need
to scoot over a little bit. You know, we we
have to do this interview. Stoo over, you have to
go hang out with Lady Wilson for a little bit,
get a picture and take out. She thought that was
the coolest thing ever, you know, and it was. And
so my job has gotten me and to do some
really cool things. My family's got to do some cool things.
It's just their sacrifices. And some of the sacrifices are

(26:42):
you're not there on Thanksgiving, or you're never there on Thanksgiving,
and sometimes you're not there on Christmas. It doesn't matter
what the game is. And I'm okay with that. Then
I'm not saying everyone is or whatever, but you want
to be you want to call in today and talk
to some of these people that are going to be
in Washington, and yeah, they'll they they might take you
up on that and be like, yeah, feel sorry for me.
Me personally, I'm okay with it because I understand what

(27:06):
what comes with the job. And I'm telling I mean,
I haven't missed the game in twenty five years. I'm
about to wrap up twenty five full years of not
missing the game. So and there's been Christmases, there's been birthdays,
There's been things happening, and this is what we do.
This is what we do, and so i'm i'm I'm
fine with it, and I'll be there and it'll be

(27:28):
press box food and Washington will be awful, but it'll
be you know what. We'll get home soon enough. Sorry,
guys for the rant Keep ranting today, Lewis and Langston, Oklahoma.

Speaker 16 (27:39):
No blessings, man, I understand. I definitely understand traditions and
traditions right, So blessed, blessed to see y'all because I
know y'all do. Y'all do what y'all do, and we
get to do what we do. So thank y'all for
all the.

Speaker 15 (27:51):
Whole work that y'all do.

Speaker 1 (27:53):
Thank you, and thank you for saying that.

Speaker 16 (27:55):
Well I was calling because lord, how's and man, oh man,
I don't know what I watched yesterday. I mean, I
ain't even gonna talk about the defense anymore. The defense
is the defense, but I think I bought it up
a couple of weeks ago, and it's starting to become
an issue to me. I love Shotty play calling the
first quarter, quarter and a half and then I know,

(28:21):
like the game gets out of hand. And you kind
of got a shotgun and then fill.

Speaker 10 (28:25):
It out and stuff like that.

Speaker 16 (28:26):
But I feel like there's times where they get inside the.

Speaker 6 (28:29):
Red zone and they just go to and I.

Speaker 16 (28:31):
Don't know if it's da checking out of plays or whatever,
but yet again, you have this nice size running back,
you got a nice size full back, you got a
nice backup, fast runs back up, But then you constantly
throw the ball all the time. And I'm not saying that,
like I said, maybe it's what to look for and
stuff like that, but like, I feel like they don't

(28:52):
want to run the ball inside the twenty yard line.
And like I said, I'm not a coach, I'm a
thigh line coach. I'm looking from the outside end and
stuff like that. But at times I feel like and
like and I kind of and I guess I'm gonna
be talking out the side of my neck with this
one because I watched them do the Hunter a Lifty

(29:13):
play and Hunter Lifty gets stuff and I'm like, well,
he was two hundred and forty pounds.

Speaker 7 (29:18):
I mean, what would.

Speaker 16 (29:19):
Javonte would have done. But at the same time, I'm
kind of looking at it, like you get inside the
red zone and you throw a past and then you
get the flag be holding and maybe if you would
have rained, you might not get the flag or running
or I mean, and so it's frustrating all the way around,
and I know everybody's frustrated. You kind of start guess
second guests for yourself. But that's my biggest brace. I've

(29:42):
become like I'm starting to enjoy the play calling, but
then at the same time, I'm like, I almost can
tell once they get inside the twenty, they might not
run maybe once, maybe two more times, and then it'll
be all of that show. And so I mean, you
pay him sixty million dollars and you want him to
do all of the stuff, but sometimes you gotta let

(30:03):
somebody else rely on, you know, getting his zone. And
like I said, I'm not even gonna start on the defense.
I'll let somebody else talk about it. But like I said,
blessing to you guys, Mary Christmas, Happy New Year. If
I don't get in anymore, and thank you for letting me.

Speaker 1 (30:17):
Write all right, thank you. You know you can sit
here and say, well, yeah, well as un more about
the defense is what it is. The defense is everything
you just said. Everything you just said about the offense
and the red zone and all these things. It's because
and you're like, oh, first quarter, it was pretty good
play call and all that. But then in that second half, Yeah,

(30:37):
what happened in the second half, Well, Shoddy realizes, Okay,
we're not stopping Justin Herbert. We're just not. I mean,
their punter hadn't even come on the field. So everything
we do has to go and score a touchdown and
all that because we're absolutely not gonna get the you know,
a stop on defense. So yeah, maybe they got a
little bit in the second half, but that's the mindset

(30:57):
it has to be. I mean, and so you kind
of just glossing over the defense because there's no helping him.
I get it. But it changes everything. It's everything with
what they're doing. And I'm not giving the offensive pass.
I'm not giving Shod yet a pass there. I would
run the ball a little bit more. I don't know
how many times I've seen Javonte Williams get stopped for

(31:19):
losses this year. You know, Hunter Lifkey, I was surprised
by that. I mean, that guy made a great play,
he really did. He made a great play to get
in there, and just and and stuff. It's it's almost
like you knew the play was coming, which it's not
like they run that very often. It was just an
outstanding play. Really, he really did. He got to given
credit for that, you know, because I I don't hate

(31:39):
the play call. I mean when did they run Hunter Lifkey?
I mean that that would have been a good play,
But the guy they made a better one. But Javonte Williams,
I'm with you. I mean, I'm running the ball down
there a little bit more. I think with especially with Booker.
I mean, Booker is he's a man child. Todd Brooker
is going to be a really really good player. That's

(32:00):
gonna be a great pick. That's kind of why I
want to keep Tyler Smith in the middle. I just
think those three guys, with Babe and Booker, Tyler Smith,
I think you have a chance to really be dominant
up front. I mean, they're going to continue to get it.
You got a guy in the third year, second year,
first year, they're going to figure that out and they're
going to be really really good. If you know, if

(32:23):
that doesn't happen, if you move Tyler Smith to tackle, okay,
I hope he's really good there too. But I'm I'm
getting another elite guard because I think I think that's
very important. But you got to run the ball with
him though, though too. All right, Ronnie in New Jersey's
Next Ronnie Nick.

Speaker 6 (32:41):
Good morning, Nick, Listen. I loved everything you said about
drafting in the second round and third round. Yeah, we
we've been going to guys like that since since I've
been watching uh tallboys, I think, and yeah, they got
to switch that up, switch that up. And this year
you can't get like, if there's to get a linebacker,
you got to get somebody that's actually really really good

(33:04):
and you know they's had experience, and you're gonna have
to get him in the free agency. You're gonna have
to spend money in free agency if you want something
like that. If we want to actually change, yes, this disaster.
Aside from that, do you know what, Nick, when you
were saying all that about these players and stuff like that, Man,
we need somebody like somebody that's crazy, somebody the opponent

(33:29):
has fear, that put fear into the opponent, Somebody that
can remember also spellman Jay Ratliffe on offense. We need
somebody like an Eric Williams, just one of those mean big,
and these guys weren't first round picks. Eric Williams wasn't
a first round pick.

Speaker 7 (33:47):
He was like, what a.

Speaker 6 (33:48):
Later in the draft for I'm sorry, yeah, third round okay,
so yeah, you can find guys like that. The last
the two best second round picks we've ever had its
Sean Lee and the Marcus Lawrence. Aside from that, we're
not I'm glad we have two first round picks. No, don't,
don't trade back. Don't trade back to get with Yeah, no, no,

(34:12):
don't trade back. You're not good at drafting in the
second or third round picks.

Speaker 3 (34:16):
That was my point.

Speaker 1 (34:16):
I was going to say to Josh in Chicago, and
I'm glad you said that. Running I totally agree with you.
Even if you have to sit on your hands for
the entire night on Friday and not have a second
or third round pick, I'm fine with that. Pick two
picks in the first round, get two first round picks.
Not only are you getting two first round players, but

(34:37):
you're getting two five year deals. That's what the first
round is. Five it's four years with the with the
option for the for the fifth. And you need that.
You need to have good players on the cheap, and
that's the only way you can. Really you can't guarantee anything,
but I mean there's a really good chance you're going
to do that by staying in the first round. I'm

(34:59):
not about now. If you are sitting at fourteen and
you've got five guys that you love, and somebody wants
your pick, and they'll give you number eighteen for it,
and you can get a third round or maybe a
late second for it, Okay, I mean, if you've got
five guys you love and you're gonna get one either way,
I'm okay with that. And you know, let's be smart

(35:20):
about it from from that standpoint and move back a
little bit and pick up some But I'm not getting
out of the first round, so I can get a
second and a third and take another guy that, you know,
another Sam Williams type or whatever, just just in hopes
that they're gonna be I need. I need more first
round guys that are going to be solid players. And

(35:41):
so even if I don't pick the second, third round,
I'll be fine with that. All Right, we gotta go
break one more time. We'll be right back after this.
All right, Cowboys fans, this one's for you.

Speaker 2 (36:51):
The Cowboys storyline presented by Gillette.

Speaker 1 (36:55):
The officials all right, Welcome back to Cowboys storyline presented
by Toilett. This we do our Gellett Position Player of
the Week. How about Dak Prescott? How about that? I mean,
he's the guy that you know, he's out here and
he's doing it every day's leading and you know they
didn't they didn't have the best game in the second half.
I get that. I understand they didn't score and all that,

(37:17):
But you know, I think I think Dak the way
he's doing, the way he's playing this year, is not
just this week. It's sadly he's playing this year. And
that passed you through to George Prickens front touchdown him.
He can't put it, You couldn't hand it off better
than that, And so you know, I think he's having
a phenomenal year. Too bad he didn't get more help.
But and I understand that year sixty million a year quarterback.

(37:39):
He's playing like it, though he played like it this year,
but you understand that. But you know you need more
help and uh and and Dak definitely does that. But
when it comes to our Gellett Position Player of the Week,
I'll go Dak Prescott. All right, Chris and Saratoga Springs,
what's up?

Speaker 5 (37:53):
Man?

Speaker 7 (37:54):
Hey? Nick?

Speaker 11 (37:54):
How are you good? You not too bad? Another another
rough game? Do you have any up First of all,
do you have any updates on my boys Illinois with
the injury on him?

Speaker 1 (38:05):
I don't, but man, four days he I mean, you know,
four day rest and and the fact that he left
early and did not come back. I would I would say,
probably not coming back for this one. I'd like to
see him more. I'd like to see him play more,
but I if I had to guess, I would say
probably not this year. I mean this this week for sure.

Speaker 7 (38:27):
Right.

Speaker 11 (38:27):
I think if that catch would have been on Sports Center,
if the call stand, because that was the unbelievable one
headed catch and they called it back on that.

Speaker 7 (38:36):
I don't know.

Speaker 11 (38:36):
Tyler Smith hole that I see that that hole on
every single plane, every every NFL game. They called it
on him.

Speaker 1 (38:42):
But well, Tomash Smith wasn't happy about it either. I
talked to him about it. He was, he was. He
had some some words to say about that and how
the Chargers bake calls and how they they you know,
they they gave him that that call. Probably a little
different being on the outside than on the end. You're
an inside guard. You probably make that hold and it
probably doesn't get called as much as he does, kind

(39:05):
of on an island there at left tackle right.

Speaker 11 (39:08):
And I'm glad Shotty in the Brass are listening to
your show and taking my advice and moving that boy
to tackle because we, like I said, we don't have
a guard problem, we have a tackle problem. And I
thought he played outstanding first start there at the left
tackle position, so I'm I'm glad they moved him. And
I think I heard shot he said he's there for
the rest of the year, So I'm glad he's there.

(39:29):
We need help on the obviously on the tackle positions.
As far as the draft next year, a thousand percent
agree with you pick those first two rounds. You're not
trade and we need we need players, and players you
know very well with the first round pick, so we
need to keep those two picks in drafts, two first
round picks. Other than that great show, happy how they

(39:50):
to everybody on the show, especially you and Chris Bean.
You guys are incredible. You do a great job every
single day. Twenty five years of not missing a game.
That's that's incredible. So congratulations on that.

Speaker 1 (40:03):
Everybody, Thank you so much, thanks for saying that, And yeah,
and and you know, we'll we'll see, we'll see what
happens with with Tyler Smith. If this is a permanent move,
if this is just something to kind of get through,
uh that that game the rest of the season. Again,
I'm I'm not I'm okay with it. I'm okay with
it if if you if he can really be good,

(40:25):
if he's just going to be a good player, I
don't know about that. But Tyler Smith, first of all,
he's just he's the toughest guy. I mean, he's the
strongest guy on the team. I think he might be
the smartest guy on the team too. So he'll figure
it out. And he loves football. I mean, that's the thing.
He'll he'll he'll figure it out. I don't have I

(40:47):
have a hard time thinking he's just gonna be okay
at anything. Uh Seriously, j R. And Avondale Arizona, you.

Speaker 7 (40:56):
Other top more than another four something else by the defense.
But I like Tyler Smith as a guard because I
like Smith, Dobie and Booker in the middle of the field.
I think it gives da protection and you're talking about
going to be for years to come a great middle
of our offense. I just and about the defense. And

(41:18):
I'm not gonna talking about kens Murry today. I swaw
I wouldn't, But just the lack of improvement is what
I can't get by just no improvement. The same problems
it just week fifteen that existed Week one. On mcconkee's touchdown.
There's full receivers in that half of the field and
only three defenders. Nobody came over with konkey when he

(41:39):
came in motion. And this is just bad coaching. It's
got to be bad coaching because there's different players. I
know they know how to play, and I just don't
see how Matt Eberfluss and his staff are still on
this team next year. If they are, we got a
huge problem. I can't remember which call it was said.
When you start drafting players with this knowing what the

(42:00):
problem is, I think that gets in even more problems
that being tall that somebody else get on and pay
Merry Christmas to you and your family into all the
storyliners and go Cowboys.

Speaker 1 (42:12):
All right, thanks Jay, I appreciate it. Yeah, then there's
gotta be some changes. I just I can't see. I
can't see how you would you would carry it over.
I don't I don't know what's the cell. I mean,
there's no way, there's really no way. And it's not
about people. I mean, I don't understand. They love Matt

(42:33):
Eberflus as a person and all that, but this year
it's just it just hasn't. It just hasn't worked at all.
And uh, you know, I think I think if they
move on, I think what you're gonna have to do
is you have to go back to that first press
conference after they traded Michael, and you got to remember
what was said, Uh, we got to stop the run.
You gotta stop the run. You can always generate pass rush,
but you gotta stop the run. They didn't generate pass rush.

(42:56):
They didn't. This scheme didn't. It didn't matter who it
was they were supposed to do that. That's what they
told us. And that's not a line we've heard before.
So it sounds like a new line, maybe from a
new coach that hadn't been here in a while. And
again I'm not saying that that's what eber flu said,
but that's what they told us, that you could always
generate pass rush. This team is twenty third in the

(43:18):
league past in sacks, and this is after the last
four years with when Micah was here, they were a
team that had that. They were in the top twelve
every year. They were in the top three twice. So
they got sacks and they traded away one of the
best players in the NFL, and they there was I mean,

(43:40):
that was a problem. The pass rush was a problem,
made the linebackers bad, made the secondary look bad. And
I think, you know, you obviously have to figure out
a way to get pass rush, and so if there
is a change made, I think it's gonna have to
you know, you have to look right there. All right,
let's go Lester again, Lester, what's up?

Speaker 4 (43:58):
Hey, Nick?

Speaker 10 (43:58):
I just wanted to make one work man. I forgot
to make we should be able to address all of
well not all, but a lot of our problems and
needs and the draft. And the reason why I say that,
remember what I said before, we had around three thousand
choices to draft from, so between that you should be

(44:18):
able to pick five to seven players to fit your
particular need.

Speaker 11 (44:24):
Go Cowboys.

Speaker 1 (44:25):
Okay, all right, thanks, that sounds good. Three thousand players
out there, you got about fifteen scouts, though, so you
got to find them all. You got to find the
right pick. And he also got to figure ot what
your defense is going to be, who your coordinador is
and all that, and what's your actual scheme in your
in your fit is going to be Zach in Atlanta.

Speaker 8 (44:45):
Hey, what's up?

Speaker 5 (44:46):
Nick?

Speaker 1 (44:46):
And Frisco what's up?

Speaker 5 (44:48):
And then you know, I declared earlier in the season
that we had to get right game against the Eagles,
which was, you know, it was a fun game, but
we are still to get right game for everybody else,
watch Washington come back to life and do something against us.
They probably will, but just the season it is, it's
hard to see the Bears with the first year coach

(45:12):
and the Jaguars with the first year coach just sore
to new heights and you know, we're still treading water
and feels like we don't have a lot of direction,
a lot of that's the defense. I'm hoping like everybody else,
that Shoddy gets his choice at DC. But all that
to say, I really wanted to come on and say

(45:32):
thank you to you, thank you to Beam, Merry Christmas,
Happy Holidays to everybody, But it, dude, storyline year one,
you ended with the wild card Green Bay game. You
have had last season and this season. Good community, but tough,
tough years to start this show, and you've done a
great job.

Speaker 1 (45:51):
So I just want to say thanks than I appreciate that,
Thank you, and you two thank you so much. You know,
the first year it was we were rolling. I mean
it was with the first game, first regular season game
with this show was forty to nothing against the against
the Giants, and the whole year was great, twelve and five.
It ended with with the worst loss in my time

(46:11):
with the Cowboys. The worst loss ever was the Packers
playoff game. I think it's the worst loss that I've
I've covered as a as a member of this organization.
And then from there it's you know, it's gone downhill
since then, two years obviously in a row of not
making the playoffs. So yeah, I think thanks for the
you know call and thanks to the y'all. I mean,

(46:32):
you can think me and Chris all you want, but
you know, without you guys calling and doing what you
guys do, I mean, we wouldn't have this show. So
I appreciate it. I know how tough it is, and
it's only gonna get tough for if if you know,
the Cowboys don't try to find a way to turn
this thing around and create some more excitement. But you know,
kind of the cycle that what we do, and we
will flip this thing around and and they'll do it again.

Speaker 14 (46:55):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (46:55):
But we've got two more games to go. And now
as far as shows go, we got tomorrow's show. Remember
it's Tuesday. It's Tuesday show, so it'll be quick, but
not too quick. You guys still call in because it'll
be our last show of the week, so it'll be
the last show before Christmas. I'd love to hear from you, guys.
We won't have a show Wednesday, we'll be traveling, some
of us will we'll be there, Chris and I'll be

(47:17):
in Washington. And then Thursday, obviously the game. Friday will
not have a show because it'll be Christmas for some
of us. And then we'll be back doing it again
on Monday. So we'll be back tomorrow. We'll do a
show tomorrow. We'll talk about whatever you want. We'll talk
about the Chargers game, look forward to Washington, look forward
to the draft, that's what y'all want to do, or
free agents here, whatever you want to talk about. All Right, guys,

(47:39):
been a good show, Appreciate it. Thanks for the positivity
and also just keeping it real for Chris be I'm
nick Etan We'll see tomorrow on Cowboys storyline.
