Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hellas Cowboys Football Club Cowboys.

Speaker 2 (00:06):
This is Cowboys storyline brought you by Gillette, the official
razor of the Dallas Cowboys.

Speaker 1 (00:15):
Here's Nick Eatman, what is up? Welcome to Cowboys Storyline.
It is Thursday, July thirty first, almost almost into August.
One more show here in July, Oxnard, California. This show
presented this year by Gillette, the official shape of the

(00:35):
Dallas Cowboys. And we're gonna have a quick show. I
know that this California is famous for a place that
is called in and out something. That's what our calls
are going to be. In and out. We're gonna go quick.
What a show we are going to have today. I'm
a little impartial, you know, partial to Waterburger. Uh you know,
official sponsor Burger I think of the Dallas Cowboys. But

(00:58):
it doesn't matter. Today's show is going to be in
and out. We got callers already. We're gonna go right
to it right now. Let's go Anthony and Miami. Let's
go Anthony, what's up?

Speaker 3 (01:07):
What's going on?

Speaker 4 (01:07):
That?

Speaker 5 (01:07):
To quick?

Speaker 6 (01:08):
My guy?

Speaker 3 (01:08):
What's happening?

Speaker 1 (01:09):
Anthony? The quick? How about that?

Speaker 3 (01:12):
And ask what I talk about? Let's do it?

Speaker 1 (01:14):
Do it?

Speaker 3 (01:14):
Let's do it. I'm doing pretty good. I think the
day they'll be an impassionate little speech on why I
love the Cowboys, and it's gonna be real quick. I
love the Dallas Cowboys. I love Jerry Jones. There's nothing
he can do that'll really hit me. I love all
you guys hanging with the boys, my crew that are
hanging bang with for seven years you now and Chris
two years talking with you. I love all the podcasts.

(01:38):
And it's nothing negative that can be stood about the
Cowboys that's done that's gonna influence me to dislike them,
to talk about them. And I've been hearing a lot
of people just, you know, just kind of sad and
sorrowful listening to the other TV commentaries and getting down
on Calboys, getting down on Jerry Man. All I can
tell you to do is support your team and love
your team and show the real fandom.

Speaker 1 (01:59):
That's it, all right, man, That's a good that's a
good call to start us off. And uh and I
think that's I think you know, you're preaching to the
to the choir on that when when I think for
people on this show, you know, these are die hard
fans and and and I think if you're a call
into the show, doesn't mean you're not frustrated, doesn't mean
you're not you know, you don't expect more, expect a

(02:21):
higher standard for what we've seen. I get that, But
you know, the ones that say that are still coming back.
I mean, I certainly get that, and I think the
Cowboys appreciate that. But they know where they need to
be and and they know that the standard for this
team uh is higher than what it's been. But I
think fans like you, Anthony, and fans like you know

(02:42):
whoever else is listening right now, fans like you, is
what what kind of carries them?

Speaker 7 (02:47):
Uh?

Speaker 1 (02:47):
And and we'll and we'll eventually get them over the top.
You know, they they they definitely need them, need you guys,
and so much appreciative for the call. Today. Let's go
to Brian in Kansas City. Brian's next. What's up? Brian?

Speaker 5 (03:00):
Good morning, sir.

Speaker 8 (03:03):
I'm doing great, man, So I'm gonna I know, we
got Shotty's press conference that's gonna cut us off today.
So just one question and I'll hang up and listen.

Speaker 1 (03:12):
H I'd love to.

Speaker 9 (03:14):
Know what your take is on all.

Speaker 8 (03:17):
These backup offensive tackles.

Speaker 9 (03:19):
You know, we've got a bunch of them.

Speaker 8 (03:20):
You know, there's you know, obviously they're all factoring in
right now. We hope that all the starters will be
back by day one, but that just maybe what you have,
you have you come you know, first of all, Nate
Thomas was a surprise to me as being the first guy.
As hey, we're going to give him the first shot.
Just whatever your opinion is, what you've seen and and

(03:41):
what opinion you've developed having watched him in person. All right,
thanks man, I'll talk to you later.

Speaker 1 (03:46):
Thank you for the call. And obviously you know that's
a big deal with Tyler Geiton's knee injury. You know,
the prognosis there was four to six weeks. I think
it's five weeks to the to the game. Is it
five weeks today? Is that right? Thursday? Probably are five
weeks from today on the Thursday night game. So that's
kind of right there in the wheelhouse for where Guidon's

(04:06):
injury is. And even at that, you know, here's a
guy that needs reps. I mean, he just does. He
needs more than any anybody on the team. I would
think Tyler Goyton needs the most reps. And so he's
not gonna get those does that mean he's ready to
come back in If somebody in that group of Nate Thomas,
Awesome Richards a Keemadnagy, if those guys, if any of

(04:28):
those guys really kind of moved to the forefront and
and kind of take some ownership, you know, they have
a chance to maybe keep that job. We saw it
last year. Schumanidoga was a better option than Tyler Goyiton.
That's not what they expected, but that's what it was.
And when you got a sixty million dollars quarterback and
you've got an offense with a lot of playmakers that
you need that you need that left tackle spot manned

(04:50):
better than any other spot on the team, then you're
not gonna play favorites. You're not just gonna say, wow,
we want to play Tyler Guidon because he's the draft pick,
he's the first round pick. We don't want to look
silly here. You're you're gonna you're gonna play the guy
that's the best option. And so uh, it's it's here
for the take. And to answer your question, I'll say
this about Nate Thomas. Nate Thomas was probably a second

(05:12):
round third third round maybe, but even a late second
round projection. As far as talent. The problem with him,
and it wasn't just one thing, it was a ton
of injuries. He had a lot of injuries in college.
He just couldn't get over that hump. And then he
comes here and he gets hurt. But he's really really
smart guy. I check out his interview it's on our website,

(05:33):
if you can. Really really good kid, and it seems
like he's he's got his head on his shoulders really firmly,
really really smart guy. And I love, I love what
I see with him, But again, can you play? Can
you be the guy? Austin Richards now going into his
third year, But maybe it's because he's a he's a
little bit more of a veteran, But I I think

(05:55):
if they gave it to you know, Keem identity now
he got banged up a little bit too, but I
think he might be your best option there. But they're
they're gonna be looking at a lot of things. Don't
be surprised if they bring somebody in from another team
or make a trade. It's that important. And I think
if they did out a guy, it would be somebody
that could could go both both sides, you know, left

(06:17):
left tackle and right tackle there as well. All right,
let's go to Zach in Atlanta.

Speaker 10 (06:23):
What's up?

Speaker 6 (06:23):
Nick? And Oxnard? By way with Frisco?

Speaker 1 (06:25):
What's up with? What's up with you?

Speaker 5 (06:28):
Not a lot?

Speaker 8 (06:29):
Man?

Speaker 6 (06:30):
I have got two comments and then I'll get off
the line. I know we're trying to move today. I
appreciate so one, there's a cool raid pitcher sit in
front of all the fans, and I think it's half full.
When it comes to Brian Schottenheimer, I'm drinking the kool aid. Man.
He's got the team accountable. He's making them run after
saying he was going to throw you know people out

(06:52):
of practice, and I think he did. And yeah, I
just I wanted some new culture in the building. I
wanted some discipline, holding players accountable because we always have
a penalty at the wrong time in the past, like
fifteen years. So I like what I see so far.
The picture is half full. It's not full because we
got to see it in the season and beyond, but
I like it. Color me thirsty for some of that

(07:14):
Google aid. All right, now number two, with Micah in
the contract situation, we've got our rookie Donovan as ROKU
getting a lot of looks, and I think he's looking
good from the things that I hear and see. I
think when Micah gets back in the fold, I think
that's only going to benefit everything. We are already pretty
high on the pick and the player, and I think

(07:35):
all the looks that he's getting now Donovan is only
going to be better once Mike is back. So I'm
excited for that. And that's all I got. Man, You
all have a good.

Speaker 1 (07:45):
One, thanks, Zach, appreciate that really good call. Let's start.
Let me start backwards on that as a rokup, and
I guess i'll tell you in a little bit to
your first part about the glass half full, half empty.
I don't want to get too far down the road
on excitement on a pass rusher without real pads, without

(08:06):
you know, the one hundred percent contact like that. My
very first year working for the team, nineteen ninety nine, Wow,
it's up, it's been there, it's been around a while,
but they drafted a guy named ebenez Or Ecuban, and
Ebenezer Recuban can get around the edge. There's no doubt
about it. He was going to get around you the

(08:27):
problem was is what Sometimes he would get around you.
They would just push him all the way back to
the referee. You know, you think that you're there, you
think you're home free. Next thing you know, you get
shoved in the back and you can't actually get that
bend to get around the edge, and he knox you back.
And I think as Iraku and I only the reason
I bring that up is I always I'm just a

(08:48):
little bit cautious on that this early in the game
and just be like, yes, quick, first step, he's got
that bend, he can get around. Let's see how it
happens when when it's you know, full contact and and
the pads are on and these guys have a chance
to really get their hands on each other. But not

(09:08):
that he's not played football before, not that he's not
done it in college, and he was really really productive
at Boston College. I think he's an exciting prospect for sure,
Just like with anybody with anything, any position. I'm anxious
to see it when when the game start, the pads
come on. I want to see this one on one
drills against the rams. That's what I want to see,

(09:29):
both sides, offense and defense. Can't wait to see that. Uh,
You're gonna find out a lot about these guys. But
I'm excited about that. And then first part of your
question about you know, drinking the kool aid and excited
about it. What's really cool is from a national perspective,
when and I've seen I've seen this happen. When when
people show the videos of them and the and the

(09:51):
warm up lines and the dak on the horse, you know,
the little stick horse whatever, and having fun, it looks
like they're effing around. But the funny thing is when
you look at the Shottennhimer, he's not effing around. He's not.
I mean, look at what happened yesterday at practice. Listen
to some of that micd Up segment we put on there.

(10:13):
He's not messing around. He really isn't. And it seems
like he is all shooting baskets here and compete every
day and all that, but on the field, doing what
they're doing on the field, they're not messing around. And
that's the good part is is he's got a method
to it. He's having fun, but at the same time
they're over here busting their ass and he's holding them accountable.

(10:33):
And that's what you've always asked for You've always said,
I want a coach to hold these guys accountable, and
that's certainly what has happened in here. Let's go to
Michael in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Michael, what's that? How you doing?

Speaker 4 (10:49):
I'm doing good? Hey, in and out wit. This is
what I got this year. If you're a Cowboys saying
you gotta be excited region of Boom two Cowboys are playing,
are gonna play no nonsense, smash mouth football.

Speaker 6 (11:06):
Shoty.

Speaker 4 (11:07):
I mean he is up here. He's a player's coach.
During the music then all this, but then he lais
a hammer when people are not.

Speaker 1 (11:16):
Doing what they're supposed to do exactly.

Speaker 4 (11:18):
And I think the defense is gonna be take away,
take away, take away all season. It's gonna be exciting
all year.

Speaker 8 (11:28):
And if you got a.

Speaker 4 (11:29):
Fantasy football team, go aha, get pickings and CD on
your team, you will not regret. That's all I got.

Speaker 1 (11:37):
All right, Well, I will respectfully disagree that part. As
far as the having the two, I wouldn't do that
with anybody having two receivers on the same team. And
I say that because I feel like I've had like
a J. Brown or Davonte Smith or whatever. There's games
when that happens. Then there's gonna be games where guy

(11:58):
has two catches for ten yards. That's what I'm curious about.
It's all great right now with pickings. What happens when
he gets two catches twelve yards? They don't win? How's
that go? You know? And that's the same with any
one a one B scenario. But what you're hoping for

(12:18):
is get that, you know, like you guys are already
dealing with that glass half full, is that they're all
catching eight, nine, ten passes a game, get a touchdown
each and having fun. And I think it can it
can certainly be that way. But to kind of echo
what you're saying, and very similar to what I was
saying before that just about shot, he's doing a really

(12:39):
good job of balancing having fun out here at practice
but at the same time having a goal, being serious
about and intentional about what they're doing. And it is.
It is definitely showing. So all right, let's go to Mike.
He's a little further away. This this is Birmingham, England.
What's up, Mike?

Speaker 6 (12:58):
He nat.

Speaker 1 (13:01):
How are you doing?

Speaker 9 (13:02):
Yeah?

Speaker 8 (13:03):
Good, thank you.

Speaker 11 (13:04):
It looks like a lot of fun out there, and
it's really good to follow. Michael, one of the most
positive Cowboys fans.

Speaker 1 (13:12):
I'll do my best. The first four, the first four
calls here have been I mean, we're just I love it.
We got the pomp pomski out here today. I love it.
It's great. All right. Are you bringing the same kind
of sunshine mostly?

Speaker 11 (13:27):
Yeah, yeah, I have got one one question Mark. I'll
get to you. First of all, Nick, I haven't been
able to listen today so far, but I listened the
other day and you've been very modest. You haven't mentioned
your award, so congratulations on that.

Speaker 1 (13:41):
Thank you. I appreciate that. Thank you so much.

Speaker 11 (13:45):
On the topic of your writing, how are we getting
on with If These Wolves Could Talk? Volume two?

Speaker 1 (13:52):
I'm not I'm not there yet, but I have thought
about it. And here's the thing. When I when I
wrote that book in twenty thirteen, or actually just writing it.
When I was writing it, it was fifteen years of
working for the Cowboys, fifteen years, so naturally if the

(14:13):
you know one times two is to you know double that,
so I would think fifteen I would go when I
get to thirty years with the team, if I can
if I'm so lucky, maybe that's the time to do that.
You know, that's a good volume too. So I'm at
twenty men, like twenty seven years. This is my twenty

(14:33):
seventh season, so we're getting closer to that. So maybe
maybe I'm working on another book actually as we speak,
but I'm not gonna I'm not gonna bring that up
right now. But yeah, so I am actually working on
which would be my fifth book. But not easy. Not
easy to do when you have kids. Most of the
books that I've written or before the house got as

(14:55):
full as it is. But I'm certainly thankful for that.
But kind of hard to write a book for sure.

Speaker 11 (15:00):
Yeah, So a couple of things. Third Brilliant, Absolutely love it.

Speaker 6 (15:06):
I love the guy.

Speaker 11 (15:07):
I think it's a really good deal, no downside. And
you watch this year when we've got CD and Pickings
and Colbert buzzing around. You see the space that Third
gets now and what he can produce. And I'm really
excited to see all four of them on there.

Speaker 5 (15:28):
Just praying that they.

Speaker 10 (15:30):
All stay healthy.

Speaker 11 (15:33):
So the one, you know, slight question mark that I'm
going to bring. The Rams are coming in next Tuesday,
I think, and I remember last year when the Rams
came in. I vividly remember it Nate Newton. I can't
remember the exact words to use, but it was basically,
oh right, we've got a problem, because as soon as

(15:57):
someone else rocked up that was, you know, competing with us,
we didn't look so good. And he saw it straight away.
So I'm going to be really interested to hear how
Nate is talking and how all of you and your
colleagues are talking after we've.

Speaker 10 (16:11):
Seen the.

Speaker 11 (16:14):
Rams in town. And my other thing is and then
I'll get off and the next person in is on
social media we've been seeing it looks like a really
good vibe in camp. It looks like a lot of
good things happening. I'm seeing slightly more kind of on offense,
and I don't know if that's just because it's a

(16:34):
more positive thing to kind of put out there that
everyone wants to see touchdowns, don't they? So how are
the defense looking? And one guy in particular, I saw
Jay Toyer getting a mention as getting a few reps.
How's he looking? Do you think he might be any
kind of any kind of answer? And with that, I'll lead.

Speaker 6 (16:53):
You to it.

Speaker 1 (16:54):
Thank you make the defense has been just as good
in my opinion, as the offense. I think it's back
and forth. I mean, yeah, from what you might see
social media eclipse and things like that, because when it
goes well, you know, in practice, it is a thirty
forty yard catch down the field. When it doesn't go well,

(17:17):
it's like three defensive linemens swarming the run and they
didn't even get to the line of scrimmage. And that's it.
And that's not a play that gets posted a lot.
It's just not kind of boring, but it's a huge
play for the defense, So that's part of it. If
it's not an interception, even the sacks are as Dante
Faller getting around the edge and touching Dak on the

(17:38):
back and that's it. I got you, you know what
I mean. So it's not as exciting of a play,
but it still doesn't mean the defense isn't being productive.
I think it's been pretty fifty to fifty back and forth.
Jay Toya he got surprisingly, just like a lot of
the guys, he got banged up a little bit. I
don't think it's that serious. Again, really hard to tell

(18:00):
where he is and how how well he's doing. Those
defensive tackle positions. I mean, everyone goes. Everyone's half speed
is different. So he's another one. I know, I keep
saying it. But these guys in the trenches, you know,
what kind of strength do they really have? What kind
of playmaking ability do they have in there? So he's

(18:22):
a he's a guy. We'll be watching all right. We're
gonna go to break real quick on Cowboys storyline. Be
right back after this.

Speaker 2 (18:28):

here we go. Let's speaking of Chris. We're gonna go
to Chris in San Angelo.

Speaker 5 (20:30):
Hello, mister Nick, how you doing today, my friend?

Speaker 1 (20:32):
How are you doing?

Speaker 5 (20:33):
I'm doing well. Thank you for asking. Yes, I can
be very quick.

Speaker 1 (20:38):
Oh.

Speaker 5 (20:38):
First of all, I echoed the congratulations on the accolades
you got very deserved, sir.

Speaker 1 (20:45):
Thank you appreciate that. Thank you.

Speaker 5 (20:49):
Not a problem, but I was gonna. I was gonna.
I was just gonna go with one quick one. How
what's your confidence level at the backup quarterback position as
far as basically Joe Milton in particular, and my own
personal opinion is I think he's gonna be fine. I'm

(21:11):
not worried about it. I think once it starts to go,
he's gonna go in there and do well. I just
want to know what you think, sir.

Speaker 1 (21:19):
I do not have an answer for you. Chris. I
don't know because I have no idea what he's going
to do. I really don't. He is exciting to watch,
but I think he I think he's one of those
quarterbacks that when he's in the game, I think he

(21:40):
scares the crap out of the defensive coordinator and the
offensive coordinator. At the same time. I think the defensive
coordinator would be kind of worried about, Oh my god,
I watch this guy. He takes off and all that,
and I think the offensive coordinator calling the plays is like,
I don't really know what's gonna happen here. I don't
know if he's gonna throw the pass. Even though I've
called a pass four times in a row, I don't

(22:00):
know if he's gonna throw it. He might just take
off and run. And if he does, are they gonna
go thirty yards? Forty yards? Is he gonna find I
don't know. I don't know what he's gonna do, to
be honest with you, So.

Speaker 5 (22:10):
But yeah, well that that was exactly what I was
gonna kind of say. I didn't want to ramble about it,
but I will say that I think that based obviously,
I'm christ, I'm san Angelo. This isn't anything scientific, but
I do believe that once once it comes on, with
the ability he has, he's gonna make something happen.

Speaker 1 (22:32):
That's just my personal Yeah. Yeah, I mean I would
I would think so as well, he's gonna make something happen.
You just kind of, you know. One of my favorite
one of my favorite shows was A Movie's Football Movies
was was a Varsity Blues when he said, you know,
I was trying to make a play and he goes,
yeah for which team? And so I always think about that.

(22:55):
I I like him, but he's fun to watch. He
brings a lot of energy. I think he's pushing da
in the you know, in the right direction, because he's
much more of an athlete. And backflipps and and all
these things. Can throw the ball, you know, over those mountains,
you know what I mean. He can throw it far,
but but can he process it? Can he make plays?
We're gonna find out. He's gonna get a lot of reps.

(23:17):
He might be Trey Lance. He might be a cheaper
version of Trey Lance. I don't know if that's good
or bad. Honestly, just don't know what to what to say.
But I say this, it's a he's a get your
popcorn ready type of type of guy. He will be.
He will make the preseason games a lot more fun
to watch. All right, thanks for the call, Chris. Let's

(23:38):
go to Irene Falls Church, Virginia.

Speaker 10 (23:42):
Hey, I guess this morning there?

Speaker 1 (23:46):
When When when am I gonna say Irene from Oxnard, California?
When is that gonna?

Speaker 7 (23:51):
So?

Speaker 10 (23:52):
Yes, we'll be there Sunday, like you said Sunday ones.
I'm looking forward to that Rams practice for sure, but
I'm sure we'll.

Speaker 11 (23:58):
Be there for both.

Speaker 10 (23:59):
So hey, anyway, to be quick, So and you've talked
a lot about the shot and her making people run.
First thing. I thought it was Rob will be happy,
and yes he was, but more than just okay, you
can have a hard ass as a coach, and I
hope that's okay to say, but it's done anyway, but
your players have to buy into it.

Speaker 5 (24:18):
See he loved it.

Speaker 10 (24:20):
I'm looking forward to not having fourteen penalty raiders Thanksgiving
games or I think fourteen penalties is also. I was
reminder last night how we lost the forty nine ers
first playoff game, So you know, it's a good sign.
Doesn't mean we're gonna win the super Bowl now, but
do I hope that means we're at least not going
to show ourselves in the foot and give us a

(24:42):
good chance to at least stand games and see where
it goes from there.

Speaker 13 (24:46):
Absolutely, So that's it.

Speaker 7 (24:48):
I'll talk to you all right.

Speaker 1 (24:50):
It sounds good. Thank you for the for the quick call,
and you know I'm not with penalties it's always it's
always tough to figure out what that is. And he
can do all he wants to, you know, here to
try to cut down penalties, but a lot of a
lot of it's on the player. It's just on the

(25:10):
player at the end of the day, some of these
pre snap penalties. And also, are you good enough to
do your technique right? Is your technique good enough where
you're not holding where you're not, or if you are,
you're doing it the right way and not getting caught,
you know, things like that. But you know it's it's uh,
I just I just will see. Well, I'm not gonna
sit here and say that they're not going to be

(25:32):
They're not going to have a lot of penalties. They're
going to be much more disciplined. Well, we're about to
find out. I've just in all my years of covering
the Cowboys, I've never really had a rhyme or reason
of the teams that get penalized a lot. You know,
some of the team's very aggressive and and and they
go get the ball, they get the turnovers. Does that

(25:52):
mean they're offside sometimes? Yeah? I mean Marcus Ware got
an off side penalty about every other game. Flows Adams
got a fall start penalty just about every other game,
trying to anticipate that snap. If if you produce the
way DeMarcus Ware and Flows Adams did, you would take that.
DeMarco Murray and this is not a penalty, but DeMarco

(26:14):
Murray fumbled I think every game for the first eight
games of the season in twenty fourteen fumbled. Didn't lose
them all, but did fumble. I think the first eight
games of the year. You also had one hundred yards
rushing in those games and ended up with eighteen hundred
yards and Offensive Player of the year. You take that.
So my point is is you take the aggressions if

(26:37):
it's controlled the right way, and sometimes that might mean penalties.
Just cut out the dumb stuff, line up where you
need to line up, don't punch the guy in front
of the referee after the play because you're mad, you know,
and get a fifteen yard penalty. You know, second and
two is now second and seventeen. Stuff like that that

(26:57):
you can control, but you know, penalties happened. I hope
this is a tough, aggressive team and sometimes with that
you do get penalized. That's why I'm just I'm not
really sure what my stance is there. You just want
a good, tough football team that can play smart. If
you got that, then I think I think you can
go a long way. Let's go Joe and Stanford. You
got in, I got it, I got it all. I'm good.

(27:20):
How are you doing? For those that don't know, Joe
Man is one of the OG's when it comes to
this show. When we first started it, he was a
guy that called all the time. I understand you have
a different job, different hours, things like that, but I
do appreciate you calling in when he can.

Speaker 9 (27:33):
No, I got so the specific time frame that you're
doing it right now, next up, a little bit of
great time I have it works. So of course I'm
gonna be upset, upset with the show regardless, but apprecire. Yeah.
Absolutely Man. First of all, I'm so jealous that all
story are coming to Colifornia. I talk about robbers. She's

(27:54):
like no, and I'm like, oh, come on, but yeah,
maybe next year.

Speaker 1 (27:58):
I'm oh, I have a question. You don't you don't
run your own household? Yeah? Me either. All right, let's go,
let's go. Yeah, I know you right, Yeah, yeah, yeah,
I don't. I don't control anything at all.

Speaker 9 (28:14):
Uh So, you know, I'm excited about a kind of things.
You know, I have a thousand things I weren't talking about.
But I watched the Drawn Blade Energy yesterday with the
film and I've always spot this way.

Speaker 1 (28:29):
But I mean, he is.

Speaker 9 (28:32):
The kind of guy that the Trawboys should want to
sign to a long term contract. I love that kid.
I wish every player to be like him.

Speaker 1 (28:46):
And let's say Stall got brother I appreciate. Yeah, he's
he's a He's a really, really good guy. There's no
doubt about it. He's one of those players that if
the PR staff is and careful, he'll say yes to
every interview request and he'll do it. And you know
that's one of those things while you can get Deron

(29:06):
to do it, he won't turn you down. You know,
he's just he's just a good guy. The the contract
thing with him is it's interesting. I don't know where
where you know where that where they stand right now.
His agent's obviously going to push, you know, a certain angle,
and he's had some great success. You know, this is

(29:27):
one where I'm sure they look at the you know,
PFF rankings and things like that on on where he
is you know, with coverage and you know, man coverage,
zone coverage, down the field, all that, because we see
the pick sixes from a couple of years ago. But
you know, it's not a lockdown guy. I don't know
if there is a cornerback anymore that is that. I
don't think you would call him that. But he's very

(29:49):
opportunistic when the ball's in the air. He's a playmaker,
and you want that kind of guy in a lot
of ways. Now is the price right? And also who
stands to to benefit if you wait? If you you know,
he's one season removed from a record breaking year. What

(30:11):
if they go another year and it's he's not gonna
have five pick sixes? What if he has one? What
if has none? If he got three four interceptions and
you know, gives up some plays, makes a few plays
here and there, good, good, solid year. What's that price
tag look like? You know, maybe the Cowboys would benefit
to wait? Maybe he should wait. That one's a tough one. Uh,

(30:33):
dron Bland is certainly a guy that you want, Joe,
You're exactly right about that. This price has got to
be right, and I think I think they can make
that work. I really do I think that they will
make that work. All right, Lester and Minnesota's next. How
you doing, I'm going all right, but I get on

(30:54):
your nerve.

Speaker 3 (30:55):
But I got a.

Speaker 1 (30:58):
Go for it.

Speaker 13 (30:59):
You guys, we're talking Tuesday about Jerry's comment about not
working hard or something.

Speaker 1 (31:09):
I'm not sure.

Speaker 13 (31:10):
Exactly what was said.

Speaker 1 (31:11):
He said, it doesn't feel like he's really worked quote
unquote worked in thirty seven years or thirty five years
because of how much fun he has doing this job
and how you know, just how much he's how he
feels like it's a privilege for him to have this job,
so he doesn't feel like it's it's work. That's why.
That's what he was saying, haven't truly worked worked because

(31:34):
I love what I'm doing. That's basically what he's saying.

Speaker 13 (31:37):
Oh, okay, well I took it the wrong way. Well
I'm still gonna say what or what I plan on saying.
So and then I remember you were saying at the
end of the caller, I forgot who he was. You
were saying, if you haven't won a super Bowl, then
you you relate that to someone working if you haven't

(31:59):
been the top of your job at which I have twice.
It was very hard to do, but I did it.
Two out of three years, I was top. I was
a salesperson. I was top salesperson in the whole country,
not just in my area, the whole country. So but
I think what I want to say.

Speaker 1 (32:18):
Is that.

Speaker 13 (32:20):
Be in a gym.

Speaker 9 (32:22):
I've never been to gym.

Speaker 13 (32:23):
Okay, so, but I'm just saying, when you're building something,
and I'm relating it to what I did for those
two years, it takes a long strong commitment. I mean,
and I'm not saying jer and not committed, but I'm
saying it just takes. It's like it almost takes everything.
I mean, it's like you eat, sleep, and breed that.
And I know Jerry has other interests and I'm not

(32:45):
saying he doesn't care, and I'm not saying he doesn't
do a good job, but I'm just saying to be
at the top, and in his case, to win the
Super Bowl, it takes everything. You see what I'm saying,
Oh yeah, it.

Speaker 1 (32:59):
Takes a guy that yeah, like you said, and he
sleep during uh Dallas Cowboys and you know, and I
think he's he's right there. I don't know any sleeps,
to be honest, with you. I'm serious, he's he's he's
as dedicated as it could be. And and and you
know what, good for you And like you said that

(33:20):
about your job. That my point what I was saying
was is I think a lot of people are kind
of forget when they say that that he he hasn't
done his job in twenty nine years. He hasn't won
the Super Bowl. He hasn't been the absolute best the
Cowboys have it been the absolute best. And that's that's
what it is. But that's his goal. That's your goal

(33:42):
as a fan, that's everyone's goal. So there's nothing wrong
with that. That that is that is cool because there's
there's teams out there that maybe you know, they put
banners up for winning the division. We go to places
and we see hey, AFC South Division champs, like awesome, cool,
that's the goal. That's the goal. But Jerry's over here
getting criticized because the team hasn't won the Super Bowl,

(34:03):
has had doesn't have a six trophy. What a great standard.
And you know what, he'll take it. He'll take it
all day, he really will. All right, all right, appreciate it.
But you got anything.

Speaker 13 (34:15):
Yeah, I also think you know, we as fans. Man
will take at this point, will take being in the
NFC Championship. That's not the super Bowl, but we will
take that. I mean it would be awesome. I mean
that would be like a step Yeah. All right, all right, oh,

(34:35):
I got the call. Appreciate that.

Speaker 1 (34:37):
All right, Let's go to our next caller. My man,
all right, this is you're Riyah in Stanford, TESSAs Eyah,
what is up? My man? How you doing? This is
my nephew. You're right, and I'm sure Jeremiah, you're your
twin brother is not too far from the phone.

Speaker 10 (35:01):
Jamaiah wanted to ask about the CD Lamb and George
pickt zero.

Speaker 1 (35:08):
Okay, okay, yeah, we're gonna talk about that. Yeah, what else?
What else you want to talk about? This is your time, man.
I'm not I said in and out to everyone else.
But you know what, when my my nephew, who is
eleven you're eleven, right, yeah, yeah, eleven year old twin
nephews call in, you know what, I'm gonna extend the
time a little bit, a little bit. So what what else?

(35:29):
What are the questions you got? Turn it down? Turned down?
The are you listening to it on the on the computer. Yeah,
turn it down a little bit.

Speaker 10 (35:40):
Yeah, okay, he said turn it down a little bit.

Speaker 1 (35:44):
Okay, what else you got, Jamia?

Speaker 8 (35:51):
Uh?

Speaker 6 (35:51):
You got any of these questions?

Speaker 4 (35:53):
Your tickets?

Speaker 6 (35:54):
Time?

Speaker 1 (35:54):
No, I'll say this, Okay, I got a question for
you guys there because because I've seen I've seen a
video when they cut Zeke a few years ago. Jeremiah,
you weren't having it.

Speaker 13 (36:06):
Man.

Speaker 1 (36:06):
You went outside, you threw your stuff down, you were mad.
I think you might even have shed a tear. He
was your guy. That hurts you. So who's your guy? Now? Though?
Who is your guy? We all move on from fans.
Who's your guys at CD? Pick Travon? Okay? All right,
hopefully And if both you guys are playing football, right,

(36:29):
you play flag football? Who's what's the quarterback in the family?

Speaker 6 (36:35):
Is Ryan?

Speaker 13 (36:36):
Me?

Speaker 1 (36:37):
Who's me? All right? And you throw it? And so
when you're out there playing, I mean, are you throwing
to the other kids? You just throw your brother?

Speaker 5 (36:47):
I mean I give everybody you.

Speaker 1 (36:51):
All right, I love it? I love it? Or do
you just take off and run like like Joe Milton does.

Speaker 4 (36:55):
I mean I wish we could do that?

Speaker 1 (36:57):
Rules all right? All right? Love it. So, So the
question is about duo of Pickens and C. D. Lamb.
I will answer that. You guys, Uh, I'm gonna keep
the line moving now, you guys have a great summer.
Two calls from Stanford, Texas? Are you serious? That's also
been w one call? All right, see you guys, a bye.

(37:21):
So you're you're right, Jeremiah. They're one year older than
than my son Jacob. When the three of them get together,
oh lord, like, it's it's they're playing, they're yelling, they're
they're they're fighting, not really the playfight. They have a
good time together that they're they're two awesome kids right there.
You're right, Jeremiah. They are great uh older brother types
for for Jacob, the three of them are. It's it's

(37:43):
quite a trio right there. And I miss all of
them for sure. I'm gonna go to break real quick though.
When I come back, I will answer that question about
the duo. We'll be right back after this.

Speaker 1 (39:00):
All right, welcome back to the show. Here, got a
few more minutes. We got time for at least one
more caller. It was really cool. I got to to
talk to my two nephews there, Aryah and Jeremiah, both
from Stanford, Texas. Stanford Texas is about our outside of Abilene.
It's it. I'm not sure on the on the population,

(39:22):
I would say two five hundred. I mean, like a
decent percentage of it has called this show today. So
that's really cool and kind of lost in the shuffle there.
I forgot to mention, but first time callers obviously for
for both of them. So here we go for for them,
all right. And their question was about the duo between

(39:42):
CD and Pickens, and man, I think I think it's
pretty dynamic. You hope that they they I'm not saying
get along, but you hope that they kind of understand that.
You know, it's gonna be hard. It's gonna be hard
for both of them to get the football and all
the time and for their stats to be great. But

(40:02):
I think it's going to be dangerous for defenses to
try to stop both of them. You can't stop CD
with one guy, I mean, he is not getting a
lot of double teams. Pickens I don't think. I don't
think that many guys can stop him as well. So
we are gonna double both of them. I mean That's
why they signed Jake Ferguson to a big contract because
he could have a monster season this year. And also

(40:24):
I think they're gonna run the football as well. So
it's one of those things. Something's got to give you.
Double team those guys. Ferguson makes a lot of catches,
Jaalen Tolbert makes catches. You run the ball. Now you
start to change up a little bit. Now George Pickens
is going deep. I just think the threat of both
of them is going to make the entire offense better.
All right, let's go to our next caller, Jeremy from
Salt Lake City.

Speaker 9 (40:46):
Hey, what's that Nick?

Speaker 7 (40:47):
I'll try to be quick here.

Speaker 1 (40:48):
Appreciate it, Thank you good.

Speaker 7 (40:50):
Yeah. I just wanted to kind of talk a little
bit on what Lester was talking about a couple of
minutes ago.

Speaker 1 (40:56):
Okay, and your point about if.

Speaker 7 (40:58):
You haven't been best in the world, it's something you
really don't have any room to criticize, which is basically
what you were saying, right, And I think like those
three years when we were twelve old.

Speaker 1 (41:10):
No no, no, no, no no, let me let me let
me clarify on that one. If your argument to Jerry
is that is that you haven't you haven't. Like it
was basically like he hasn't done his job. He hasn't
done his job in twenty nine years. And that's when
I kind of came back on, like, you can criticize
and criticize of how it's done and the process and
maybe why they haven't won it and they haven't changed

(41:32):
things up and their philosophy has been the same. You
have some things to criticize, There's no doubt about it.
I'm just saying if the standard of you haven't done
your job because of that, then then let's be careful
on what we're saying about everybody else and their standard,
you know, because of the same. Now I hope you,
I hope you hold yourself to the higher standard if
that's how you're holding Jerry. That's what I'm trying to say.

Speaker 7 (41:55):
Absolutely I agree wholeheardly with that. And to back that up,
are those two years we went twelve and four the
reason we lost in the playoffs?

Speaker 1 (42:03):
Do you?

Speaker 7 (42:05):
I will say, and I've said this before on the
forum too on Twitter, when we get it's never been
roster issues while we lost those games, you know what
I mean? They were teams that First of all, we
had we we had a home field against the Niners
that we blew that one right, right, And then then

(42:27):
there's another one in twenty twenty three where we were
second seed in the whole NFC and we didn't show
up to play there. Those aren't roster issues, Those aren't
Jerry issues. Those, in my opinion, were coaching staff issues
and having your team ready to play and having the
right mindset throughout the year. So I just kind of

(42:47):
leave with that anyway. Yeah, I see what you think about.
Do you agree with that?

Speaker 1 (42:54):
Agree? I mean, you know, you put the roster together,
you do everything you gotta do, and at some point
you know you gotta go. I mean, it's it's it's
just like with any chef. I gave you the ingredients,
I gave you everything, and now you have to put
it together and you have to put it together and
and hopefully you know it's it it tastes good, you know,
and but that's that's kind of what it is. And
so you're you're right now, I'm not saying that they

(43:15):
don't get some of the blame. And because you know,
some of those years, what about the other years when
they haven't gotten that far and sometimes it is. But
but this team has been good enough in the last
thirty years to go to the Super Bowl. They haven't
and there's different reasons for that. Some of it on
how its structured, some of it on how they performed,
some of it on the coaching, all of it. For

(43:36):
whatever the reason, it just hasn't been perfect for those
thirty years. But that's that's again, that's the goal. Thank
you Jeremy for the call. Good stuff. Let's go one
more caller, Eric and Amarillo. Eric, what's up man?

Speaker 7 (43:52):
A long time?

Speaker 1 (43:52):
Well, I appreciate you. You get in yep, yes, all.

Speaker 15 (43:56):
Just real quick. I've really enjoyed, uh the shottenheimmer. I
think he's just so knowledgeable.

Speaker 1 (44:03):
He is. He is like his dad was a great coach,
and he has just been around and he just was
like a sponge for his whole life. It's almost something
like that.

Speaker 15 (44:11):
Oh it's not a got a doubt. I mean, you
listen to him, it's just knowledge just comes out everywhere,
and you can tell he knows what he's talking about,
you know, and it's easy to you know, with MacCarthy,
you know, I've just never heard that from him. Last
year I don't know if it's because he's not as
transparent and he didn't want to say as much, but

(44:32):
I mean, just the knowledge that comes out of Shottenheimer
is just, uh, it's just yeah, uh, I think we're
going to be in good hands.

Speaker 1 (44:41):
I do too. I do too. Now he's got to be.
There's a lot of really, really great people in the
world that can't coach football, you know. I mean, you
could be one of them. But but what I'm saying
is is that it's obviously more than this. But from
what I see so far, man, it just seems it's exciting.
It's a exciting to watch for sure.

Speaker 15 (45:01):
Oh is it definitely seems like the most the moved
there and practice is completely different.

Speaker 1 (45:08):
Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker 15 (45:10):
Last thing I was gonna say, were you surprised that
Perguson got a long term deal? I really thought they
would let him go like that did Schultz and just
bring in another young tight end. Did it surprise you
that he got a little contract a little and then
I'll hang out?

Speaker 1 (45:24):
Yeah, yeah, all right, thanks for the call, Eric, I
appreciate that good good stuff, and yeah it did. It
did surprise me a little bit, and it was one
of those deals that I think if he would have waited, uh,
he could have you know, he could have maybe had
gotten more money depending on what kind of season. But
but I think they they anticipate him having a really

(45:45):
really big year, and so you know, the timing was
right for it. I mean, uh, he was coming off
a year it wasn't that great for him, injured a
little bit. But they they their anticipation for him is
to have a really really big season and they didn't
want to fight that battle, you know, afterwards and so
and Stephen Jones said it. You know, it's all about deadlines,

(46:06):
it really is. This is the last year of his deal,
a little bit more of a priority then. You know,
the deadline is closer than it is for Micah. And
obviously it's a different neighborhood of money. But you know,
they Michael's not going anywhere. This is last year of
the deal. They will franchise him. He is not going anywhere.
They can franchise him two years in a row. So
he's not gonna go anywhere. But the Ferguson they felt

(46:29):
like this was the time to strike, and that's what
they did. All right, guys, great great show, a lot
of fun, got some fun callers. My favorites, I'm not
gonna lie. My favorites were my two nephews there you
Ryah and Jeremiah calling in. Uh so awesome. And I
know my son Jacob's watching and Julie and the whole
family watching back at home as well. Missed them for sure,

(46:49):
but let's uh, we'll do it again on Monday. Next
week we go three times, maybe even more than that
if we can sneak another show in with the storyliners
that are coming out here should be a lot of fun.
So for Chris Bey and Nick Eatman, see you next
time on Cowboys Storyline.
