Speaker 1 (00:01):
The following.
Speaker 2 (00:02):
He is a production of Dallas Cowboys dot Com and
the Dallas Cowboys Football Club.
Speaker 1 (00:08):
Cowboys.
Speaker 3 (00:11):
This is Cowboys Storyline with Nick Eatman.
Speaker 1 (00:19):
What is up?
Speaker 4 (00:19):
Welcome to Cowboys Storyline. It is Wednesday, March the twelfth.
It is the first official day of the free agent
signing period. But free agency is certainly already underway.
Speaker 1 (00:32):
We know this, and the.
Speaker 4 (00:33):
Cowboys are, surprise, surprise, been relatively involved. They've they've got
some some things happening here. I had to write some
of them down. I mean, that's how many things have
already taken place here. Nothing earth shattering, but still I
think just just a few moves here and there, and
that that the Cowboys have made, you know, some to
(00:56):
be excited about, some somewhat expected. You know this, They're
gonna bar and shop. We know that. That's what that's
what they do, and that's what that's what selectively aggressive means.
But but so far, you know, the Cowboys have have
have made a few moves here and there. They've signed
some of their players. Some have are expected to sign
it elsewhere, and that was also expected to So eight
(01:20):
eight eight eight five five two two nine seven is
the number to call. I'll have my cell phone handy
here and trying to keep track of things that are
that are happening as we speak. But uh, I want
to hear from you guys, see what you think on
some of the moves. I can run them down or
I can just let them. They'll be discussed here as
(01:41):
you guys will talk and what we'll sure we'll probably
touch on all of the things that have happened.
Speaker 1 (01:46):
So let's do that.
Speaker 4 (01:46):
Let's start us off with Casey Joe, I assumes in
Kansas City.
Speaker 1 (01:52):
Yes, sir, what's up man?
Speaker 5 (01:53):
How are you doing today?
Speaker 6 (01:54):
Nick?
Speaker 1 (01:55):
I am good. What's up with you?
Speaker 5 (01:57):
I was they're in the draft, not the draft, but
where they doing. The players at Jackson Dart looks really
good out of Mississippi. I know we might not need
a quarterback, but might not be bad to put one
on the shelf, you know, in case Dak gets hurt again.
Speaker 1 (02:12):
Which game did you watch?
Speaker 2 (02:14):
Well?
Speaker 5 (02:14):
I was watching, not the game, but where they did
the tryouts.
Speaker 1 (02:19):
Yeah, okay, yeah.
Speaker 7 (02:20):
He looked good.
Speaker 5 (02:21):
And then that running back from sm you, the one
with the little mustang on the side, That running book
looks quick. Yeah, I know, I know, I don't I
know we may not get Gentry the one we were
looking at, but if we don't get him, i'd really
like to see him. Take a look at him.
Speaker 4 (02:38):
Yeah, you know, I'm not honestly, I'm not familiar with
his name. I think I know who you're talking about. Yeah,
for them, but you know, I'm not one hundred percent
sure who that is.
Speaker 2 (02:48):
Now.
Speaker 4 (02:48):
I know Jackson Dart following him in the SEC and
you know he's he's got the arm talent for sure,
but he's you know, he's had some like he's kind
of a gunslinger. That's what it looks like to me.
The Florida game is the one that is gonna be
puzzling for a lot of teams, just the way he
(03:10):
just kept throwing it and getting an interception and then
throwing it and get another interception. He's got some really
good talent though, and he's got a strong arm. But
you know, he'll he's probably moving himself up into this,
maybe even the first round.
Speaker 5 (03:26):
So Yeah, the one signing that we had that I
was happy was was keeping Turpin. Yeah, really happy with Turpin.
And I think we kept our punter too, didn't we.
Speaker 4 (03:36):
Yes, Yes, Brian Anger that he agreed to terms last
night on a deal.
Speaker 2 (03:41):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (03:41):
Special Teams looking pretty good. Uh, well, obviously lost the
coach John Fossil. Nick Sorenson takes over, but he's gonna
have pretty much the core seeing this snapper. Uh, he's
gonna have the core guys, because when you think about
like the five main guys, the snapper, the kicker, the punter,
the main kick returner, and your main special team's ace,
(04:03):
which is CJ. Goodwin, that they they've kept all of them.
Aubrey's obviously not a free agent this year, but the
whole course coming back, aside from the coach, so not bad,
not bad for those guys.
Speaker 7 (04:17):
I want to let.
Speaker 5 (04:18):
Everybody else get in, So I just wanted to say
good morning, and you have a great day to day.
Speaker 1 (04:21):
Okay, I appreciate it.
Speaker 4 (04:23):
Thanks so much, Casey, Joe, thanks for calling. And I'm
not sure if you're going to just hand the phone
over if you're next to your man, Brian, but Brian
in Kansas City is next Brian.
Speaker 1 (04:37):
What's up?
Speaker 8 (04:38):
Good morning, sir?
Speaker 1 (04:39):
How are you.
Speaker 8 (04:40):
I'm doing all right. I'm doing all right. We got
some beautiful weather here and enjoying that instead of sub
zero temperature as the last couple of times I.
Speaker 1 (04:48):
Called Brian, No, I know, we don't talk about the weather.
It's free agency. Let's go, let's go.
Speaker 2 (04:57):
Hey.
Speaker 8 (04:57):
So you know, the one thing that I was a
little disappointed in is after they cleared all the cap space,
I thought they would keep jaylu When I looked at
the contract that the Jaguars sound into, I know it's
being reported as a three year deal, but it's really
a two year deal because the third year they can
get out of it for a three million dollar cap hit.
(05:18):
I was just really surprised that they cleared all that room,
and then the draft and develop strategy didn't come into
play there because he's probably you know, depends on who
you look at, you know who you know, people that
rank players, but he's probably on every board in the NFL,
a top five Nickel corner, and at least one of
them he's number one.
Speaker 1 (05:39):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (05:40):
I was just a little you know, when I say surprised,
what I mean is annoyed.
Speaker 9 (05:44):
Nick.
Speaker 1 (05:45):
Yeah, well, so ten million a year you want that?
Speaker 8 (05:50):
So that's not really what he got. When I looked
at the contract, he got five. The cap hit this.
Speaker 10 (05:56):
Year is five, next year is twelve the third year,
they can get out of it for only a three
million dollar tap hit. That to me, if you cleared
fifty million off of your cap and that's after osa
that Yeah, I think if he's considering that right now,
we only have one healthy, proven corner on the team.
Speaker 8 (06:21):
That's my issue. So anyway, my question, my question for
you is, you know, is so you know, based on
what you've seen so far, and I'm I'm with the
with with Joe, you know, I'm glad to see their
resigned terp based but what based on what you've seen
on the resignings and the outside guys, has this changed
your view of what our needs are? So to me,
(06:44):
corner just skyrocketed to the top. Right all we got
is bland and then a bunch of guys. Yeah, and
that's that's skyrocketed. And of course linebacker, I mean, we're
you know, I don't know, you know, I don't know
that we could play a game tomorrow unless we're putting
out the special teamers, you know at linebacker. So that's
that's my opinion. And I'll hang up and listen, brother,
(07:05):
Good to talk to you.
Speaker 4 (07:06):
Good, good to talk to you, you know, And going
back to the Jordan Lewis thing. You know, you can
you can dissect all of the contracts, and you should
because it's it's very you know, unless it's a one
year deal, it's you know, it's pretty rare that it's
straight up exactly the way it looks. I mean, Marquise
(07:28):
Bell signed him three year, twelve million a year. I
mean twelve you know, twelve million total. That's not exactly
that way. It's you know, a lot of interurpence is
the same thing, three for eighteen, but you know it's
really more four and a half a year, and then
he can get up to eighteen million based off incentives.
And from what I learned, those incentives are really more
(07:48):
offensive based catches, yards, touchdowns on offense, not so much
kick returns, not accolades on Pro Bowls and All Pro.
It's more about if he plays offense to the to
the tune of so many catchers and yards that they
put in there, so he can get those incentives. And
you know, it has to be more than what he
(08:09):
did last year, which you know he had I think
maybe four hundred five hundred yards. He hit five hundred
receiving yards. He was the only player in the NFL
last year with a thousand kick return yards and a
five hundred receiving yards.
Speaker 1 (08:21):
So he's got some value. Cowboys kept him for sure.
Speaker 4 (08:26):
As far as the needs go, I mean, you know,
I think your needs, your needs are going to be
great players. And so when it comes to the draft,
you're still going to draft, you know, the best players possible.
Like you said, linebackers is very thin right now. You know,
cornerback as well, so that's still a need. That's what
(08:47):
you want to do is kind of get rid of
all your needs to go play a game and then
try to go on top of that, I think with
with with quality players in the draft. But yeah, and
they're not done. I mean but but you know, clearing
up the cap space was to was to go and
and sign players add add them to this football team.
(09:09):
I mean, they that that's one thing that a lot
of people were forgetting when they're like, look at all
the cap space, But they weren't. They weren't figuring in
that there was only forty one players on the on
the roster that that you know, that's why they have
so much cap space, and in some degree because they
don't have a full roster yet, so these guys, you know,
you got twenty five free agents, went off the team,
(09:29):
so that now they're not counting anymore. So you've got
to replace them. And that's kind of what's happening.
Speaker 1 (09:34):
You know.
Speaker 4 (09:35):
Well, I still think the Cowboys are going to continue
to be active. They got a lot a lot of
room to go, and they got a lot of players
to sign. We'll see how much, you know, if there's
a splash or two in there.
Speaker 1 (09:44):
I don't know if there has been.
Speaker 4 (09:49):
I don't think that there's been a huge splash just yet,
but but you know, there's been moves, and that's better
than what we've seen in the past. All right, let's
go to and and and going back to that first caller,
first caller from Casey Casey Joe. He's talking about Brishard
Smith from SMU, the running back Chris helping him with
that and he ran a four three forty.
Speaker 1 (10:09):
So I like that, And.
Speaker 4 (10:12):
Yes, yeah, I mean that that's what has to happen.
Speaker 1 (10:16):
When you when you want to.
Speaker 4 (10:18):
Get up the draft charts, you you run like that.
I'll never forget. East Carolina had a guy named Chris
Johnson ran in the four to two range the next thing.
You know, he's a first round pick and so yeah,
you run like that, and I think that is the
type of running back that I would be looking at.
And you know, if you don't get gent I think
Gentcy's at all around proven guy. But if it's that
(10:40):
that's not what happens, then then I'm looking at maybe
a thunder lightning situation. I really like the Javonte Williams addition,
as long as it's what it is, and he's the
second guy, he's young, he runs really hard, catches the
ball out of the backfield. That's a nice compliment. Back
(11:02):
to another little bit more change of pace speedback that
is not on this team just yet. But whoever it is,
I think it's a it's a good one to punch.
So I like what they've done with Williams, not as
the main guy, but as another lead, uh you know,
another runner in the backfield.
Speaker 1 (11:21):
Ronnie in New Jersey is next Ronnie?
Speaker 11 (11:23):
Hey, how you doing? Next?
Speaker 1 (11:24):
Good? How are you doing? Ronnie?
Speaker 11 (11:26):
Not too bad? I mean we expected, But yeah, I
do like the them keeping some of the guys that
they've kept so far. And but wasn't the point of
she Now they waited for Garrett to get resigned and
(11:46):
all this stuff. That's the point that I think that's
where I'm starting to I'm afraid to say it, but
I'm starting I'm starting to lean towards Ralph from Vegas's
side when he started saying like, why do we wait? Right?
Are the Cowboys always the last one to wait to
sign their big star player to a contract? And now
you're letting it escalate where it's like a ridiculous number.
Speaker 4 (12:11):
Now, Okay, well Michael wants forty five, so let's just
get it done.
Speaker 1 (12:15):
You want to just get it done.
Speaker 11 (12:17):
I mean, Michael, that's what I'm That's what I'm saying
that now it's going to be where he's gonna want
forty five or he's gonna want you know, in the forties,
because they waited for Garrett to get forty a year
when it was thirty five, so they thought thirty five
was too much. The same didn't happen with Dak. Dak
wanted what was it like in the forties? I think
(12:38):
it was at that time and they thought it was
too much when now they're print sixty, like, oh that was.
Speaker 4 (12:43):
That was a different contract to go. I mean that
that's two different contracts. That was four years before he
got the forty and then this year at the sixty.
I think what you're saying is is that maybe they
you know, they're but see DAK wasn't DAK was asking
for more than sixty. CD was asking for more than
thirty four to come down to that number in both cases, So.
Speaker 11 (13:03):
You know, and any negotiation, you're always going to say
a ridiculous number because you're really looking for this number.
You know what I'm saying, like, I'm gonna take sixty
five because I'm looking for sisty. So yeah, they're going
to say whatever number they're looking for. But you know
what they're what they actually want is a little lower,
and they're are that's susceptible. You know, they got a deal,
the only deal I think we've gotten so far that
(13:24):
that's going to work out, and I don't see it
like because just because of the de tackles where they're getting.
It's also as this deal seems to be an actual
like team friendly deal and all that stuff, so that
that that's kind of, you know, the only one that
I seen that they've gotten because that was a late
deal too that they threw out there. But when I
(13:45):
was telling you, like I know, I've mentioned a few
times where they they gave up that fourth round pick.
Now is when they're actually going to feel that fourth
round pick, because with this draft, they're deep in the
tackles and running backs, and you need another running back.
I hope they don't draft gent in the first round,
to be honest with you. Look, get them running back
(14:06):
in the second or third round. They need defensive linemen.
They need a nose tackle at least who's gonna stop
the run. We still don't have anybody. Solomon Page is
a pass rusher who's going to stop the runs. But
that's my point. Okay, but thanks for taking my call.
Speaker 1 (14:24):
All right, thank you. A lot of stuff there.
Speaker 4 (14:27):
I'll just start with the Solomon Thomas is the is
the defensive tackle that they signed from the Jets. Solomon
Page was a tackle from the two thousand, two thousand
and one area. Solomon Thomas, they picked up from the
Jets third overall pick in the draft in like twenty seventeen.
(14:48):
Hasn't lived up to that obviously. He's been a solid
player and a guy that has played under the new
defensive line coach Aaron Whitecotton who with the Jets for
three years, so he's he's been that's the connection there.
And you know Thomas is a local, local guy here
from right nearby in Coppel, Texas. So uh, you know
(15:11):
that that's that's a good homecoming for him.
Speaker 1 (15:14):
We'll see. I don't know if he's a you know,
clear run stopper.
Speaker 4 (15:17):
He's a lot like Johnt Golsten when you just look
at body type, versatility to play end and tackle depending
on the scheme. It's a lot what Golston was a
little bit cheaper in the draft pick there. To answer
your your stuff about about Micah and and waiting too
long and all that, you know, I I personally think
that that you've got a floor and a ceiling now
(15:40):
with with with Miles Garrett and with Max Crosby. I
think that I think MICA's deal goes somewhere in between there.
And yes, he might ask for more than Garrett Miles Garrett,
but I don't know if he gets that. And you
know he said that maybe doesn't need that, So we'll see.
We'll see what happens. You know, Dak kind of sets
things too, didn't play for the money, ended up getting
(16:02):
sixty million years. So we'll see what happens. But I
certainly would like to see them get get a deal
done there. This is the time to do it, obviously,
with a lot of guys, you know, this is the
time to sign these guys in free agency.
Speaker 1 (16:17):
All right.
Speaker 4 (16:18):
One thing I want to point out too, is that
in the app we have the chat box features now
live something new that we're trying want to interact with
you guys.
Speaker 1 (16:29):
In the app.
Speaker 4 (16:30):
You can chat with each other, you can ask questions,
you can ask questions to me. We have people monitoring that.
You can also just kind of chat amongst yourself. That's
from the feature in the app. So I want you
guys to be aware of that. Let's keep back to
the phone lines. Gavin in Oklahoma City is next.
Speaker 1 (16:48):
Hey, Hey, Gavin.
Speaker 12 (16:49):
Good how are you. I'm good man, I'm good. I
came on the show a couple of weeks ago and said,
I think the Cowboys need to try to find some people,
give them some prove it deals in our cap situation.
I think that's exactly what they have done so far.
I'm a fan of the runner back signing. I'm not
(17:10):
so much a fan of some of the others like
the d N. I may not see the upside there yet,
but you know every player is different. As far as
new look new field.
Speaker 13 (17:20):
They can from the Saints, yes I got I got
some stats on that or not not stats, but I
got an opinion on that here in a second.
Speaker 1 (17:30):
But I'll let you keep.
Speaker 12 (17:32):
Going so you can get kind of lost in all
of their stats. And I don't think either free agent
signing we got looks too good on paper, but I
think you have a lot of upside with the running
back I keep forgetting his name for Williams. Yeah, yes, sir.
And my opinion on where we're at with this is that,
(17:57):
although I like what they've done so far, I think
you have to try to find a starter in free agency,
whether that be at receiver. A name that comes to
mind I said before his digs, and that's not just
because his brother plays for the team. I think he
can really come and contribute to this team. Dalvin Thomason
is still out there at the tackle. I think he
could help you in that rotation and he has starter potential.
(18:21):
And then there's a couple of other players, maybe Russell Douglas.
I think they have to go find a couple of
starters to fill in this team, because when you try
to go into the draft and fill all these needs,
we have corners of blinking light defensive line, offensive line.
You could even argue, I don't think they're going to
(18:41):
be able to fill all those holes. I think that's
the problem we really had last year. I just wanted
to get your opinion on that.
Speaker 4 (18:48):
Yeah, I mean, that's that's going to be the key
is who they bring in to help, you know, as
a starter, because some of these guys, most of these
guys I don't really see as starters. Gavin, thank you
for the call. You know, Solomon Thomas, I think is
is going to be a role player. But but that's
(19:10):
that's kind of what you have at defense of the
defensive line, you know. I think he will be a
solid starter type player. Depends on, you know, what kind
of looks in fronts they have. But he'll play a
lot to be considered a starter. I'm not sure a
lot where on on the offensive line. With Robert Jones,
(19:33):
you know, there's there's a lot of moving parts there.
Speaker 1 (19:38):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (19:39):
You ask the you asked Schottenheimer and we talked to
him a little bit about I've talked to Schottenheimer, talked
to Clayton Adams, uh, talk to Connor Riley, the offensive
line coach, on what what we're going to see out
of Cooper Bebie and where he's going to play. That
one's gonna that's just interesting. I don't I don't think
(20:00):
they want to move him from from from center as
after a productive year at center, but if he's the
if it's the best option, then they will. If they
find a center that would be better than that. So,
you know, Robert Jones, I think is going to be
more of a guard kind of you know, guard tackle
type guy I played at Miami. But in another guy
(20:24):
I want to throw out there too. I'm going to
talk about Peyton Turner for a second. This is a
first round pick that didn't did not pan out for
the Saints obviously four years, not very productive five sacks
maybe just two and a half. Last year has been
hurt a lot. They obviously, you know, see some some
potential there. The one thing that I'll I'll throw out
(20:45):
there is that, you know, depending on your expectations, don't
forget the Mica factor. With Mica being on the other
side in twenty twenty two, Dorance Armstrong had eight and
a half sacks. Okay, that that was that was a
career season for him. Playing on the other side, Tank
also had over six sacks, made it to the Pro Bowl.
(21:07):
Twenty twenty three. Dante Fowler had his best season as well,
had six sacks, best season in a while. He had
had a ten sacks season way back before, but he
you know, came back and kind of resurrected his career
six sacks last year. Carl Lawson had a really good
season for him and he had had zero the year
before it had five last year. I know Micah plays
(21:30):
a factor in that, not just Micah Dang. You can
say Dan Quinn as well in some of those but
but you know, scheme, but but having a guy on
the other side like Micah certainly changes things. So I'm
not sure. I know Peyton Turner didn't have that uh
in New Orleans and and you know he's got to
He's got to turn the corner if you will, U
pun intended, but that's what he's got to do and
(21:52):
and and get the coaching and all that, but also
be in a scheme that that you know, can can
help him, uh make some plays.
Speaker 7 (21:59):
There.
Speaker 4 (21:59):
So, so that's that's the one thing I would look
at is, you know, this is a good situation. It's
a good place for guys that have some potential to
to really magnify that from the defensive line and pass
rusher standpoint. So, uh, let's let's don't don't forget that
part right there. This is a this is a topic
from UH and a question from the chat. So from
(22:22):
our chat, this is Bart, He's in Spring Texas. Do
you expect any splashes or even a ripple this week?
If so, what position would you like to see us
go after big, big splash type stuff. I think corner
would be would be a spot i'd like to see there,
because you know, you don't know what you're win. Diggs
(22:45):
is going to be back. I don't think he'll be
back in time to start the season.
Speaker 1 (22:50):
Bland.
Speaker 4 (22:51):
I feel confident in Deran Bland, but but still I'd
like to see a corner there that would be the
splash move. From an offensive standpoint, I still think a
younger receiver, I would be more inclined to draft the
receiver than than to maybe make a splash and move.
(23:14):
Not sure how all that all those guys would fit
with CD and and and you know, you try to
get the ball to to a lot of people because
you think about, you know, you've got Jalen Tolbert now
last year of his deal. It's about to you know,
it's the fifth year for CD, sixth year for CD,
so it's about time to start getting another new, you know,
new young receiver in there. So that's kind of what
(23:37):
I would be. My thought is maybe draft a younger receiver. Uh,
it doesn't have to be in the first round, but
that that second round pick.
Speaker 1 (23:46):
That would be great for a receiver.
Speaker 4 (23:47):
To me, that's where you can get a guy that's
got a lot of speed and and maybe you know,
just needs to get bigger, run routes better or whatever
it is. But I'd be okay with the receiver there.
But but to add to the question from a splash move,
you know that there's a linebacker that fits. I know
they were very close on green Law. I think the
(24:08):
Cowboys thought that they had Drake green Law who just
decided to go to the Broncos. I mean a couple
of guys that I know, and I'll just say this,
guys that they were pretty close on. And you know,
close doesn't count, but it just shows you what they're
trying to do. They thought they had to deal with
Drake Greenlaw. They were very close with the cornerback Brandon Stevens,
(24:33):
who I'm personally really upset about him not being here.
Speaker 12 (24:39):
You know, that was a.
Speaker 4 (24:39):
Local kid as well, a kid I actually covered it
when he was in high school. Would have been great
to have him here, and he took a deal with
the Jets for more money in paper less money. At
the end of the day, when it comes to taxes,
I give a lot of credit to OsO Diggizua, who
he understands that it's the agent's job to understand and
(25:00):
the finances of when it comes to state income tax
and things like that. But players that know it, you're
ahead of the game. And Osa even made a comment
the other day that his eighty million dollar contract is
actually more than a ninety he could have gotten in
New York. I guess maybe the Giants or Jets were
interested in him, but he understands that understands that. You know,
it's one thing to say I want to be one
(25:22):
of the top receivers or players or whatever at my
position based off of you know what, they'll show up
on the screen and graphics on. This guy's making this over.
This also is looking at the money in his pocket.
You know how much money might really going to get
at the end of the day. And I think not
all players do that. You know, everybody has a different agenda.
But I give credit to him for knowing that and
(25:43):
understanding that. That was pretty good. All right, let's go
to Zach in Atlanta. No, sorry, Carolina in Longview?
Speaker 1 (25:50):
Carolina? Sorry? Man? What's up?
Speaker 2 (25:53):
What's up?
Speaker 1 (25:54):
How you doing?
Speaker 11 (25:56):
There?
Speaker 1 (25:56):
You go?
Speaker 2 (25:57):
I'm doing good, man. I see he keeps slitting the
days up on man, I keep forgetting what they is
with us. I'm never gonna get back on.
Speaker 4 (26:04):
I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I know it's been it's been crazy.
We've been trying to fit all these schedules in. But
but you guys, you're on now. So what's up.
Speaker 2 (26:14):
Got a couple of things, man, like you were saying, Man,
a new scheme, and you know, got some some new
guys who've already played, hoping they can, you know, revive
their careers. I want to start with you know what
I'm gonna say. I need them to revive my guy, dude,
or give him a decent amount of you know, playtime
(26:36):
to where he can actually show. I hope, I hope
this preseason they just give him the ball and let
him go wild, you know what I mean, give him
a chance to show what he is and hopefully they
can figure out something that. Of course, I would like
for us to get another you know, premiere running back
in the draft because once again he's unproven. But whose
(26:56):
fault Day's unprove with him? Or is it just certain
says that he's been given you know what I mean?
Speaker 1 (27:02):
Both?
Speaker 2 (27:03):
But yeah, I said both.
Speaker 4 (27:05):
I mean, he's had some chances to do stuff. I mean,
but I you know, he's okay this. He's got the
best chance he's ever had to do anything right now
because he's got his coaches that that coached him and
and helped him thrive at Kansas State.
Speaker 1 (27:21):
Two of those guys are here, so.
Speaker 2 (27:24):
Yeah, you're right, I'm hoping they can get the best
out of them. But my next thing is, man, I
kind of agree with Davin. It's just how he said
his name of guy before me with the with the
running back sounding because I went and sat down and
watched a little bit of tape on the guys. I mean,
even though his stats don't really show it. I mean,
(27:44):
that guy's he's a hard runner. I mean, and he's
kind of shifty. I've seen him running through people. I mean,
he's not like what they call that a guy that
he's gonna run and get sixty eighty yards every time
he touched the ball. But the way that he runs,
with his aggression, I like it. He looks like a
very aggressive runner. I think we are missing that exactly.
Speaker 1 (28:08):
I totally agree with that.
Speaker 4 (28:10):
He's the physical He's the violent runner that Clayton Adams
described when he said he wanted a violent players on
the team and the old line in the running game.
That's exactly the type of guy that that Javonte Williams
looks like to me, just in the stuff that I've seen,
runs hard, kind of scary. You don't think those guys
(28:32):
are gonna be in the league for a long time.
Speaker 1 (28:34):
You gotta be.
Speaker 8 (28:35):
Careful, you know, Mary Barbara.
Speaker 1 (28:37):
But I mean, I'm just saying.
Speaker 2 (28:39):
He runs two people, man, right, I mean, I was like, wow,
I know how when it looked the stats up, I
was like, well, from what he does, it really doesn't
translate to paper. That's why sometimes people say you just
can't get caught up in the stats. But you know,
when you need a third and two, he's trying to guy,
you get a ball too, you know what.
Speaker 4 (28:57):
I mean, That's the thing that a lot of people forget.
You're right, third and two and it's at the end
of the game. I mean, how many yards do you
want Javonte Williams to get if it's third and two
and the and the box is stacked and he's getting
the ball?
Speaker 1 (29:11):
How many how many yards too?
Speaker 2 (29:15):
Right?
Speaker 9 (29:16):
You know?
Speaker 4 (29:16):
You know what that does to your average? It drops
it pretty good. But did he do his job? He
certainly did. And I think a lot of people forget
that when Zeke was getting his yards and his average
was going low.
Speaker 1 (29:26):
But you know, for the most.
Speaker 4 (29:28):
Part, Zeke didn't get stopped on third and one, third
and two, And that's the kind of back that you want.
And if you can provide a push as well, even better.
But I do think that he's going to be a
guy that can help this team, help the running game,
help in the red zone.
Speaker 1 (29:42):
But he can't be the only guy.
Speaker 11 (29:43):
He's not going to go biking it.
Speaker 2 (29:46):
Yeah, God, somebody has to do the dirty work, man,
somebody has Yeah, But also, I got I got one.
Speaker 4 (29:53):
I just want a guy that can go fifty sixty.
I want that guy. I want you know, I want
to I want to have that guy as well.
Speaker 1 (29:58):
All right, go ahead, But yeah.
Speaker 2 (30:00):
My last thing, man, like you were saying about Fregency,
you know, he said you would like to see a
maybe on defense linebacker. I mean who who's really who's
really out there still? I mean outside of us not
getting green Law, Like, who who's out there that we
can say, Okay, this guy's veteran, he's proven, he's gonna
(30:21):
come to our team and make a difference. I mean
at this point, I mean, if Kendrick's still there or
did he gets not signed yet?
Speaker 1 (30:28):
I honestly have you not seen his name anywhere?
Speaker 2 (30:31):
So yeah, So I mean outside of green Law, I
mean I would I would suggest you just bring the
guy back because he did his job. I mean, he
had a little bit of injury, you know, but for
the most part, he held it down. There a lot
of tackles, he helped out and run as much as
I mean, he's not the greatest cover linebacker, but the
guy gets in there and he does what need to
(30:52):
do and exactly, and he's the leader, So I know,
I don't I don't.
Speaker 1 (30:57):
Know no problem if if they that, I really have
no problems with that.
Speaker 2 (31:03):
All right, all right, man, And last last thing I'm
gonna leave you. I glaranee. Who would you get to
replace the nickel? Who would you go for it? In
his dram?
Speaker 4 (31:12):
All right, appreciate it. I think Dern Bland can slide
in there. But you've got to get you know, you've
got to get somebody else on the outside at corner.
That would be a position that I would I would
go after here in free agency or trade, you know.
(31:32):
I mean, that's that's another thing that's on the table too.
I mean, you know it's not just gonna be free agency.
This is the time to make some trades as well.
So I'd be I'd be looking at that. I do
like the fact that Deron Bland can play it. He
can play the slot. And when Jay Lou was hurt
his rookie year, Bland's rookie year Bland played it had
in he had five interceptions, so he can definitely play
(31:54):
the position. Let me go to break real quick. I
know we've got some callers on the line. Let me
go to break. We'll be right back after this.

comments that you want to add to the show, feel
free to drop that in on the Cowboys app and
the new chat feature there. Wanted to bring up something
from one of our callers early on, Brian in Kansas City,
(34:19):
talking about his disappointment with losing Jordan Lewis. Kind of
looking at some of the stats. Chris helped me find
some stuff there. It is ten million a year. I
mean it's not It may not be three for thirty,
but it's two for twenty and that is ten million
a year for at least for two years. It's a
twenty million dollar guaranteed, which is twenty million is guaranteed
(34:42):
over the first two years, So that is a ten
million a year hit. Now, your base might be lower,
but when you're talking about you don't have a whole
lot of years to spread out. So when they give
a you know, twenty million guaranteed and divide it up,
especially if they can get out of it in the
third year, that still means that they're gonna pay twenty
million over to.
Speaker 1 (35:05):
Jacksonville.
Speaker 4 (35:06):
To me, is becoming sort of like the Raiders were
back in the day, where they put out deals that
they they're just spending money to spend money, and look
at all these guys that they're cutting two or three
years later. I mean, you go back and look at
man Christian Kirk got a lot of money three or
four years ago or whatever, a lot of these deals
and then you know, the Raiders used to do it
(35:28):
all the time where people will be like, well, this
guy got that, and they're like, no, now the Raiders,
just because you're overpaying for someone doesn't mean that's the
market and doesn't mean now that another corner shouldn't be
looking at it and going, oh, well this guy got ten.
Speaker 1 (35:43):
Million a year. I mean again, I don't know.
Speaker 4 (35:46):
I'm not sitting here talking bad about any other team,
because everybody's got their own strategy.
Speaker 1 (35:50):
We know that.
Speaker 4 (35:51):
All I'm saying is is that there are teams with
a lot of money already and then now with the
cap going up, they've got they've got more money than
they know what to do with, and they're throwing it
out there and it's and they're overpaying for players, and
so I don't know if if you know, the Cowboys
just weren't going to do that. For Jordan Lewis, as
good as he's been, as good as he is in
(36:11):
the locker room. You know, he's overcome so much, but
still at the end of the day, at his age,
in that position, that just they weren't going to hit that.
And I respect the fact that they had a number
in mind and they weren't going to go over that.
So that's kind of the way it is now. Zach
in Atlanta, he's been holding them for a while.
Speaker 1 (36:30):
Zach, what's up been?
Speaker 17 (36:32):
What is up?
Speaker 2 (36:33):
Nick?
Speaker 18 (36:33):
How are you many? Thanks for holding Oh yeah, that's
what I do. Sometimes it's all good. Hey, I'm gonna
submit a new sponsor for not just the show or whatever,
but for the franchise and particularly the free agency strategy.
Can we get band Aid band Aid the official partner
(36:54):
for healthcare of the Dallas Cowboys, because I just feel
like we're doing band aid free agency signings. I don't know,
not my best word, but I'll say this, it's.
Speaker 1 (37:01):
What agency is though. That's what it is. It is.
Speaker 4 (37:04):
You are putting band aids over things, you know, now
it depends on what kind that you're getting. Are you
getting the little flintstone kind that kind of you know,
would fall off in the shower. Are you getting this
big ace bandage wrapped around you know, I mean that
that's not going anywhere.
Speaker 1 (37:19):
So which one? Which kind of band aids are you getting?
Speaker 18 (37:22):
He has like a cars pick Star Cars. You know,
you struck me as a cars band aid guy. I
don't know, No, no.
Speaker 4 (37:29):
No, we actually we don't really honestly, we don't have
band aids in the house. We need to, we need
to get some, but yet we don't really have them.
Speaker 1 (37:37):
Yeah, I don't know what the official sponsor is for that.
Speaker 18 (37:39):
Yeah, but yeah, I mean, you know, the draft and
developed strategy, we've leaned on it. I'm not saying anything
too new, but yeah, it just hasn't panned out. And
so you know, your band aid and your band aid
and you don't draft well and you don't draft well,
and yeah, we're we're hoping that a lot pans out.
(38:02):
But I don't think this upcoming season is going to
be too much different than what we just saw. But
it's you know, it's gonna be what it is. But
Mishoda actually put this out John Mashoda, and he he
lined up all of our draft picks for this year,
like the round and the number, and he said, he said, Hey,
(38:24):
if the Cowboys draft like this, all their problems are solved.
If we draft Micah Parsons, Larry Allen, DeMarco Murray and
the third Orlando Scandrick, Deron Bland, Leon lest Jay Ratless,
Larry Brown, Miles Austin in the seventh.
Speaker 15 (38:38):
There we go.
Speaker 18 (38:39):
That's the winning formula.
Speaker 12 (38:41):
Can we do that?
Speaker 18 (38:42):
Do we have that in the tank?
Speaker 1 (38:43):
No?
Speaker 4 (38:44):
No, no, No, that's that's impossible.
Speaker 19 (38:47):
No.
Speaker 4 (38:47):
I mean, that's that's that's John Mishouda being John. That's
what he I mean, that's he's we just covered thirty
five years of the draft, you know, like in picking
the best fifth round or the best third round or
the best for that.
Speaker 1 (39:00):
I mean yeah, I mean, but you're not going to
do that. I mean you're not. You're just not.
Speaker 4 (39:04):
But but I understand what he's Maybe what he's also
trying to say too, is that you know you've got
to you've got to hit in some of these in
the fifth round. You you've got they haven't been drafting
as well lately, and that's what happens. All these teams
that are going crazy in free agency have the money.
Why they have the money because they're not drafting very
(39:26):
well to re signing their guys. Now the Cowboys are
resigning some of their guys, but they haven't also drafted
as well too in the last two or three years.
And now you're starting to see it, because what it
comes down to is the free agents that you're losing,
would you rather re sign them or would you rather
maybe see if something else is out there? And I
(39:47):
think over the last few years of not drafting as well,
you're finding.
Speaker 1 (39:51):
Better options out there.
Speaker 4 (39:53):
So most teams that are going crazy in free agency,
it's because they haven't been drafting well or they haven't
been playing very well. And the Cowboys are sort of
in both now after this last season exactly.
Speaker 18 (40:04):
So yeah, yeah, I mean it's tongue in cheek, but yeah,
last question for you then I'll get off the line.
Just in your time covering the team, is there someone
they brought in or someone who departed during free agency
that was memorable? Share a story about that if you
wouldn't mind, sir. Yeah, I'll talk to you all later.
Speaker 4 (40:23):
Thanks, well, I appreciate it man free agency stories. I mean, yeah,
there there's definitely there's definitely some of the the best
free agent that I that the Cowboys have brought in.
I mean it's a long time ago, both since I've
been here. Without a doubt, the best one for me
was was Leroy Glover, just because it was one of
(40:44):
those that they waited a couple of couple of weeks
into free agency and then they finally they got him
in the building and he was supposed to go to
two or three other teams, and I was one of
those where he got inside the building and they didn't
let him leave and they signed him, and that you know,
he he played for four years in a row and
got made four Pro Bowls.
Speaker 1 (41:03):
That was a really good pick up.
Speaker 4 (41:05):
It's sad that you have to go that far back
for the for the best one that I can remember,
but uh, that's the one that always kind of stands
out just because I remember being there and I remember
him being in the building and he's supposed to leave
to catch a flight and he never caught that flight.
I think he stayed in Dallas, And so that's the
one I remember the most.
Speaker 1 (41:22):
And and you know, he was you know, he was.
Speaker 4 (41:25):
He was a great player and in any scheme, didn't
matter what it was. He was one that that was
that was really good. And you know, I mean, yeah,
they they've had some leave and free agency, but nothing
really stands out as far as like a guy that
that left that was really really you know, really a
tough move that you know, I couldn't believe that he
(41:47):
left and and look how well he's done. I mean,
it happens. I mean, without a doubt it happens. But
I mean, I think it's funny looking at Chavarius Ward,
who was was here as an undrafted rookie and they traded.
Speaker 1 (42:02):
Him for you know, like I think I forgot.
Speaker 4 (42:05):
His name, Parker Ellinger or something like that, a guard
or from Kansay that never played but various word is
now you know, two contracts deep into his career and
a free agent, and you know, so there's some that
that that get away for sure. All Right, Lester in
Minnesota's next?
Speaker 17 (42:26):
Hey, Nick, how you doing?
Speaker 20 (42:27):
Man good?
Speaker 17 (42:30):
I'm all right. I've been looking at some stats here
of the people that we got on the offensive and
defensive line. Here, let's see Turner. He doesn't look too
he looks like a backup to me. But you know,
I heard you say earlier that, uh, you know, Parker
(42:50):
was on the other side, so that could be good.
Solomon Thompson definitely a backup. I'm looking at his stats.
I know he was a very good player a few
years ago, but right now, back up. Now, I am
impressed with this Jones. His stats look pretty good.
Speaker 11 (43:11):
I think.
Speaker 17 (43:12):
I'm sure he's probably not going to initially start over
anyone on the line, but we'll see. But even if
he is a backup, very good backup, could be a starter.
He looks pretty good. I like his weight and everything.
So right now, I know it's just a free agency
and in just the first few days, and I know
(43:34):
we don't usually do too much in free agency, but
I'm a little well, actually, I'm kind of glad that
we've looked into a lot more than usual. And I
know he signed a few of our guys. I was
good too. I hate that Lewis got away, but hey,
that's just the price of doing business. We can't keep everyone.
(43:59):
But I think for now i'm pretty pretty even kill.
I'm not disappointed as usual on free agency time. Right,
So that's all I got, man, Yeah.
Speaker 4 (44:10):
All right, Lester, I appreciate it. I think that's kind
of the sentiment for everybody.
Speaker 17 (44:13):
You know.
Speaker 4 (44:14):
And uh, and I fegure and you probably got caught off.
You were going to say, until they get an offensive
defensive line. At the same time, Uh, this is why
it's going to be. I'll say your line if you
didn't get to. I do think that it's somewhat positive
vibes around here. And again it's just getting started. I mean,
it's the free agency officially starts today. They you know,
(44:38):
they've had some agree to terms on some of the
other players.
Speaker 1 (44:41):
But the fact that they're you.
Speaker 4 (44:45):
Know, not waiting so much because you have to think
about these these got you know, Davonte Williams and and
Solomon Thomas and Robert Jones and Peyton Turner. I mean,
you know a lot of times you wait until you
know free agency, you know officially is underway two or
three days in to see what the market value is.
And uh, they're they're going ahead and you know, at
least being competitive enough to get these deals done. I know,
(45:10):
you know, Jones had some other options. I think Javonte
Williams did as well, so so you know, this isn't
I don't think the Cowboys just getting guys that nobody wants.
I think they're being somewhat competitive. But like you guys
are saying, these these aren't you know, these these aren't
the answers to the problems.
Speaker 1 (45:28):
These you got to have depth.
Speaker 4 (45:30):
And and they had forty something players on the roster
here just just this last week. So that's what they're doing.
They're adding the depth. And unlike in the other years,
and I've said this before, I just thought it was
going to look different because they are going they have
to sign players, and they're probably not going to sign
as many from the outside or from the inside as
(45:51):
they have in the past. Because there was a year
or two years ago where the Cowboys signed eleven of
their own guys and in maybe one or two from
the outside, and there's the thought was, oh, the Cowboys
aren't doing anything. So yeah, there's a narrative that people
believe that if you signed your own player, you didn't
do anything in free agency. So you know, twenty million
(46:12):
a year for OsO, I mean not didn't count, I guess,
but it does.
Speaker 1 (46:17):
It does count. And but I.
Speaker 4 (46:19):
Do think the Cowboys are just doing more because you know,
let's face it, when you go seven to ten, your
players aren't as good as some of the others out there.
Simple facts. Yeah, you got hurt in some you know,
some areas, but they can be better. And that's what
they're doing. They're they're looking to see they're doing it
with the coaches, they're doing it with the players. All Right,
this is a question from the chat here. Don't have
(46:40):
a name for it. I'd like for you guys to
throw in your names for a chap. There's still good question,
good topic. We can talk about wanting a true middle
linebacker Irlack or ray Lewis type of player.
Speaker 1 (46:51):
Yeah, that would be great. Let's get that.
Speaker 4 (46:53):
If you got the ir Lock her ray Lewis almost
bring those guys down. Eric Kendricks is still available. Where
are your thoughts on at linebacker going into the season. Uh,
if Kendricks is the best available linebacker, I definitely would
would look into that. I liked what he did last year,
liked him in the locker room. You know, pretty dependable player.
Speaker 1 (47:14):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (47:14):
Into the season last year he had a chance, you know,
he he was banged up, played that last game against
Washington that that was impressive to me. That's a guy
that wants to play football. You know, there's other guys
on the team that didn't do that injured, you know,
coming back for what. Eric Kendricks came back to play.
Speaker 1 (47:32):
So I like that.
Speaker 4 (47:34):
I think that that that's good for your locker room.
I think he's a good football player too, so depending
on the scheme. But but I'm sure you know, a
guy like Eric Kendricks could fit in the scheme. So
I'd like to see that. I'd like to see at
least some linebacker come back or sign maybe one or two,
because that is a position. It's not one you're gonna
draft at twelve in in any draft really, and especially
(47:56):
this one. So you you better, you better, you better
get some guy in here that that can do some stuff.
I think they're counting on marrislefl to be a good player,
but still I think he needs some help around him
as well. All right, back to the phone lines, Chris
in Saratoga Springs. You're back with us, Yes, sir, what's up?
Speaker 1 (48:15):
How you doing?
Speaker 21 (48:17):
Disappointed we didn't get Drake Greenlaw. I'm not gonna lie.
Speaker 4 (48:20):
Yeah, me too. I thought I thought that was happening.
I actually, you know, I actually wrote some I wrote
five or six paragraphs there. So I don't like wasting
you know, some paragraphs. So last year, didn't didn't we sign?
Speaker 21 (48:36):
Feel like Kendrick from the Niners last year when he
agreed to terms with yeah, the forty nine ers and
he came to us, can we like call call him
back and say listen, let's we're gonna give you a
little bit more money here. Sure, And I just Denver
always seems to get Dallas. I mean, like in the draft,
they've done it. He's taken players from us. They did
(48:56):
it with Randy Gregory a couple of years ago. Denver
is like a Thorigner my side. To be honest with you.
Speaker 4 (49:02):
Are you saying Denver taking Randy Gregory away was a
was a bad thing because I mean at the time
it wasn't good. But looking back, like, I mean sure
that that was that was a bad one.
Speaker 21 (49:16):
I mean fifty million years, I hear you. But the
thing with Dallas with Randy Gregory, he had a good
structure with Dallas. They took care of him. They know
how he operated, and he thrived with the structure that
he had with Dallas. I don't think he had the
structure when he went away to the other team. That's
(49:37):
where I thought he lacked. He didn't have that structure
in place.
Speaker 4 (49:42):
They got different laws in Colorado than they have in Texas,
so it was different structure for sure. But yeah, I
mean I think but the Cowboys got more players out
of that, you know. I mean, I remember they signed
Dorian's Armstrong because they didn't sign Randy Gregory, and that
was a better deal. I mean that that turned out
to he was a much better football player in those
(50:03):
two years with the Cowboys. But you're right, I mean,
Dan dan quinn is is is a good coach, uh
for a reason. And and you know he would have
been better, you know, obviously with dan quinn then then
maybe with the Broncos. But you know, I don't look
at that Broncos as you know, that one got away
the green Law though it did. I mean green Law,
that that one Devin got away. That that was one
(50:24):
that the Cowboys really were trying to get and you know,
they just didn't.
Speaker 1 (50:28):
It just didn't work out.
Speaker 4 (50:29):
But it goes to show what you know, they're looking
for linebacker, just like you know they were looking for
corners as well. They were pretty close on Brandon Stevens,
so corner and linebacker. I mean look for that to
happen at some point.
Speaker 21 (50:43):
Yeah, what about I said, I heard you say you
like to get a young wide receiver, but I don't know.
I like Cooper Cupp. I think he has familiarity with
our coaching staff, if I if I'm not correct, and
I think with our four fifth round picks we have now,
I don't see why we couldn't ship one of those
for Cooper Cup and get him in as a number
(51:04):
two to go along with Turpin and Tolbert, I think
that would be outstanding.
Speaker 1 (51:09):
Yeah, I think it would be.
Speaker 4 (51:12):
I mean I would Again I've said earlier in the show,
I'd lean a little bit more towards if you're doing
that move, I'd go with a corner over a receiver
because I think there's a little bit more depth at receiver. Plus,
you do have one of the best in the NFL
in CD Lamb, So I would be okay with that
with with you know, a young receiver Tolbert Turpin CD,
(51:34):
I think you can get the job done there corner,
though I'd like to see a little bit more help
there at corner. But you know, it's it's they're not done.
They're gonna make some They're gonna make more moves. So
they're just kind of getting started.
Speaker 21 (51:50):
Yeah, one corner I think out there left is what
a Sante Samuel? Is He still available?
Speaker 1 (51:56):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (51:56):
I believe so. Yeah, his name, I heard his name yesterday.
I believe he's a free agent. But don't roll out,
don't roll out trades. I'm just telling you, don't roll out,
don't roll out a trade opportunity here. I think I
think there's some. I'm not I don't know anything specifically,
but I have a feeling if they make a splash,
it'll be through a trade, not free agent. That's what
I think. But we'll see, we'll see. It's still still
(52:18):
a lot of room to go here.
Speaker 21 (52:20):
I appreciate it. Nick, Thank you so much.
Speaker 1 (52:22):
All Right, see you later.
Speaker 4 (52:26):
Chris points out here Randy Gregory played in eleven games
after he left the Cowboys, played in twelve in his
last year here.
Speaker 1 (52:32):
Yeah, it didn't work out.
Speaker 4 (52:34):
And in the your point, Chris's point was, I mean,
Christ from Saratoga Springs says, you know the structure was
better here in Dallas.
Speaker 1 (52:43):
Sure, but but.
Speaker 4 (52:44):
He didn't want it. He didn't want that structure. I
mean he he took you know, that was a weird deal,
and I remember it happened very surprised Jerry big time.
Speaker 1 (52:53):
And I think it hurt him too.
Speaker 4 (52:55):
I mean, you get nobody in Gregory's life, his family,
nobody supported him better than Jerry. I mean, Jerry took
care of him when the league was not even taking
care of him as much. And Jerry stood by and
and and then he got things turned around and he
started playing better football and become time for fregency and
(53:16):
there was a big time deal on the table and
he goes to Denver. I think that I think that hurt.
But you know, they moved on from that, and I
think the Cowboys were a better football team actually because
of it, because they got more players, and one of
them was Dorin Armstrong, Who's who's just been better and
more reliable and the more versatile and all that. All right,
let's go to Robin Vegas.
Speaker 1 (53:38):
Rob what's up, hey, Nick? You loving the moves?
Speaker 15 (53:43):
No, it's a disaster, like we thought, they're worse now
at this time. Well, it's a fact you lost Jordan's
just losing Jordan Lewis made your worse.
Speaker 7 (53:56):
You're you're you're a worst team.
Speaker 15 (53:59):
I would assigned you to Lewis and I would have
let Conva de Turpin go if I had to choose
between those two Turpens that on the field enough to
make a difference. And I don't see them using him
as a slot wide receiver.
Speaker 7 (54:11):
Which they should.
Speaker 15 (54:12):
But you know, you keep talking about you know, free agency.
They got to use it for depth players. You have
to have starters first, and they don't have any. And
that's their business model is whacked. They use free Free
agency is where you bring in proving guys, and yes,
you have to pay. If you would have brought in
(54:33):
a Drake Green Law, you have to solidified that position
for four to five years. You know Gulpha bid he
would got injured. Instead. You keep going to, well, we'll
get this guy for you. It's like buying a thousand
dollars car and expecting you to last. Like, no, you're
going to keep buying thousand dollars cars. And that's what
we keep doing. We don't use free agency correctly. You know,
(54:58):
the caller says we were a draft and develop team, okay,
but you can't do that with free agency. Also, we
bring in these guys with hope. Jerry loves to ooh,
this guy was a first round pick. This guy was
a third round pick, Trey Lance. It doesn't work out
because Jerry doesn't know anything. You know, Jerry, Jerry thinks
he's out smart. You know what's smarter than these teams?
(55:20):
They don't know? Now, I'm sorry they're not. They're smarter
than you. Your front office is awful. And why did
you extend Dak for this? If anything, you want to
get out from under that contract as fast as possible,
or you build the best team around them, because the
only way that money makes sense is to win a
(55:42):
super Bowl, and you're not trying. And I got to
tell you, I love Michael Parsons, but he should never
sign with the Dallas Cowboys. Why would you you're a
young man, You're going to get the top dollar. Go
to a team that is really put football first. Dallas
don't put football first. They put marketing first. Why would
(56:05):
he want to sign here? He'll be wasted like Zach Martin,
Tyrone Smith.
Speaker 11 (56:10):
He'll just be that.
Speaker 1 (56:14):
I'm sorry.
Speaker 4 (56:14):
I'm just saying I'm sorry, I'm sorry that that that's
that's the mentality that you have, right now.
Speaker 15 (56:20):
But but no, no, no, but why why would Mike
and not have that Mentime he went to the owner
in Doke, State and said to the guy, I want
to be here. I'm willing to take less, but I
need you to take the money that I would save,
that you would save and build a team. And Jerry said, nah,
So why would you sign here if you could go
(56:40):
anywhere to play? And state tax is only when you
play in that state, so that's eight games unless you
play in Florida. So so come on, why would he
sign here? He's going to get forty million. If I'm Micah,
I asked for forty five, now, forty six, forty seven
because the owner is not going to take the savings
(57:03):
and invest it on the field. He'll invest it off
the field. And I'm sorry.
Speaker 4 (57:09):
Michael Parker said, Rob, how do you not understand that
that is not Do you think that that money that
you save in the salary cap goes.
Speaker 1 (57:18):
To and go to market?
Speaker 2 (57:20):
Neck?
Speaker 11 (57:21):
What?
Speaker 20 (57:22):
Listen?
Speaker 15 (57:22):
Listen. It's been talked about when you sign players and
you give them a signing bonus that comes right out
of your checking account. Today, if I give you one
hundred dollars signing bonus, I write you a check for
one hundred million dollars. Jerry does not want to do that.
He was forced to do that with DAK, He was
(57:44):
forced to do that with CD. He rather have that
liquid money. Don't you have any friends that use a
credit card even though they got cash in their pocket,
And I would say to them, why you use a
credit card? Because I want to keep that cash just
in case. That's what Jerry does. Jerry wants to keep
cash in his pocket because if he sees an oil deal,
(58:04):
or if he sees a puppet John's pizza deal, he's
got the cash. Why invest in the Dallas Cowboys? They're
eleven billion dollars, they keep going up in value and
they haven't done anything in thirty years. He's top dog,
So that's why he doesn't want to do this. I
don't know why everybody finds it so hard to believe.
Speaker 4 (58:23):
Right, you think he's worth eleven billion dollars, You think
that's what the cab work.
Speaker 15 (58:27):
He's worth close to the twenty billion, Okay, the Cowboys
are worth eleven billion.
Speaker 1 (58:31):
Okay, well then whatever whatever one you want to do.
Speaker 4 (58:33):
Take the salary cap that the that the NFL has
and divide like eleven billion into that.
Speaker 15 (58:40):
It's not the salary cap. We know there's a salary cap,
but that's the signing bonus comes out of the owner's
pocket immediately. That's why the Eagles sold ten percent so
he could free up seven hundred and fifty million dollars
cash so he could write these checks. That's what it's
about out, okay. And that's why he brings in these
(59:02):
guys three million for what kind of play are you
going to get paying three million dollars? Drake Greenlaw was
twelve million dollars. Spa lane was twelve million dollars.
Speaker 7 (59:14):
You couldn't drop.
Speaker 15 (59:14):
That for a linebacker that you don't have. Jordan Lewis
ten million, okay, but he's the best at what he
does and you don't have anybody. So I just don't understand.
The business model is no good. You don't use free
agency as a draft and develop hope. No, those are
where you get the proven starters at least in the
(59:37):
first two days, and you do the draft and you
hope in the draft you get two to three players
a draft that actually make a difference on the field.
Speaker 1 (59:47):
All right, that's what we have a thing.
Speaker 4 (59:48):
Thanks yeah, that's you know, you get nine calls and
you get you get eight that are somewhat positive, and
you know, and Rob's going to do what Rob does
and that that's that's okay. But you know, I'll say this,
and I know he's not here too, because he had
that opportunity. But the thing about it is is, Jerry,
(01:00:13):
I think I've done the mask the math Jerry can do.
Can can cover sixty or sixty five salary caps. So
to think that this over here, this salary cap, that
have two hundred and sixty two hundred and eighty FA
whatever it in two hundred eighty million whatever, it is
like that that that money affects the other you.
Speaker 1 (01:00:35):
Can do that.
Speaker 4 (01:00:35):
He can make sixty one salary caps. So I want
instead of paying into this one, I'm gonna go get
a new marketing deal. That's that's ridiculous, Okay. So it's
it's not about that. It's it's about building the team.
And have they done a perfect job. No, obviously not.
It's not been good enough to meet the standards of
(01:00:57):
what they're trying to do. We all know that we
don't need to be re minded of that. But but
they do have a strategy here and and they always
believe that that signing these guys in free agencies, signing
these big name guys right off the bat is is
not what's going to help your football team. And so
there's other teams that are doing it doing it. You know,
(01:01:19):
they do a pretty good job with it. And I
think we're starting to see a change there. But you know,
it's it's been two days. We don't we don't know
exactly what's what's happening just yet. There's gonna be some
stuff that that goes on. And I know this that
that that all those things I've seen I've heard like
Rob from Vegas and a lot of you guys, you know,
(01:01:40):
really respect the stuff that that he says, which is great.
But I've seen it flip and flip flop many times.
Speaker 1 (01:01:46):
The Dak deal. It depends on the call. Rob.
Speaker 4 (01:01:49):
Sometimes it's it's a great move, Sometimes it was it
was the right move to do. Sometimes you got to
get out from under this contract. So that's just kind
of the way it's been. I'm gonna take a breaker
on start on to be right back after this.

Speaker 20 (01:03:25):
Good morning, sir.
Speaker 11 (01:03:26):
Are you pretty good?
Speaker 2 (01:03:28):
Buddy?
Speaker 8 (01:03:28):
How about you?
Speaker 1 (01:03:29):
I'm good?
Speaker 21 (01:03:31):
First of all.
Speaker 20 (01:03:31):
Four to July is four months away. So today we
have a fireworks, but I'm gonna go easy on you
to bring it to reality. A couple of things. I
think rams they're gonna release Scooper today, so if the
(01:03:54):
Cowboys wish to get them, we don't have to give
up any draft picks. That's one second. The Darren's picture
you want in color of black and white?
Speaker 1 (01:04:09):
I don't know, uh, whatever, whatever is easier? You talking
about Darren Woodson. Yeah, it doesn't matter, is it? Whatever?
Speaker 4 (01:04:17):
Whatever you have, whatever.
Speaker 7 (01:04:19):
You when do you need it? By I don't know.
Speaker 1 (01:04:24):
I just I just related the question to him.
Speaker 4 (01:04:26):
I don't think we need it. I think you asked
the you know, what's when? What's what's the favorite animal?
He answered it. So I don't think there's a timetable
on anything.
Speaker 7 (01:04:33):
Okay, okay.
Speaker 20 (01:04:35):
So the last thing I just want to.
Speaker 22 (01:04:38):
Give you little love, Chris rob all the storyliners. The
reality is I'm involved with the Sanchuz Hospital and Make
You Wish Foundation.
Speaker 7 (01:04:51):
And I did a charity auction so.
Speaker 20 (01:04:53):
They raised money to pay the bills for all the parents.
I thought, the twelve year old boy fourteen brain tumor,
fourteen brain surgery. So you know, we're all having fun here.
I just want to give a love to everybody on
the storyline to have children. The reality of the world
(01:05:13):
is just just be nice and take it easy and
at the end everything's going to work out. The most
important is our help up to our children. Love you, buddy,
I'll talk to you later.
Speaker 4 (01:05:27):
All right, thank you, well said, appreciate that puts it
in perspective. You're exactly right. Let's keep going here. Well,
you mentioned the Cooper cup stuff, you know, something to monitor.
There's no doubt about it. I mean, whether smoke, there's fire.
(01:05:47):
I think there's some definite interest there. But we'll see
kind of what happens, how the day, how the day
goes out, And I would imagine that would change some
people's thoughts on what the cowboys are doing if they
if they do a situation like that Nico and Colorado Springs, Nico, Hey.
Speaker 7 (01:06:07):
What's up?
Speaker 8 (01:06:07):
Nick?
Speaker 7 (01:06:08):
I'm not gonna even ask how you're doing. We know
that Rob fires you up, and I'm actually gonna come
right behind him and fire you up again. But actually
I'm gonna do it in a different way. I'm gonna
fire us up. Usually I get a little.
Speaker 1 (01:06:21):
I'm not fired up. I'm good.
Speaker 4 (01:06:23):
I'm not fired up. Like honestly, you ask anybody in
my face.
Speaker 7 (01:06:27):
You had to take a break, buddy, Huh. I said
you had to take a break.
Speaker 4 (01:06:32):
We we take breaks. That's what it's time to take
a break. It was twenty five, it was it was good.
Speaker 1 (01:06:38):
It was good.
Speaker 7 (01:06:38):
One commercial break. Nick, you needed a breather. We know
you did.
Speaker 21 (01:06:41):
That's okay, Niko.
Speaker 7 (01:06:42):
We know you're just like, it's.
Speaker 1 (01:06:43):
Up, Niko.
Speaker 4 (01:06:44):
You're not gonna fire me up. If anything you're going
to do, so let's go bring it. If you think
you can bring it.
Speaker 7 (01:06:50):
Going, we're going to go for it. I usually look, Nick,
you know I love you. I've read your book, I've
fought your books. I've met you personally. I've met you personally.
Speaker 1 (01:07:00):
What do you got?
Speaker 7 (01:07:02):
You are exactly like Schottenheimer right now. You are a
Jerry Jones yes man. And that's because Batman pays your check.
And you know what cool be that this is We're
done hearing that we suck, Like you said, we know
we suck right now, but we don't want to hear
you so us that these are great players.
Speaker 9 (01:07:26):
They're not.
Speaker 7 (01:07:26):
They're bargain bin we know it. But like you said,
this is where I was gonna agree with Rot. But
you just said it just now, Nick, and it didn't.
It just hit me. It's only day two. We could
be making moves. We don't know yet. Michael could be
signed tomorrow, we don't know. So I'm usually on the
whole side of Jerry sucks and this team sucks, and
(01:07:51):
I'm not this time. Here's the thing I actually am going.
I've been listening to you lately and how you talk
about Shotimer and the crew and all of our signings
staff wise, and I've done some research on these guys
and Okay, you might pull me back in. Just when
you think I'm out, they're gonna pull me right back in.
(01:08:13):
Welcome to the Dallas Cowboys. As you have said, I
just can't understand why Jerry isn't actually listening to the fans.
We have these shows for a reason. Jerry, listen to us,
go out and pay the money to get these people.
Speaker 2 (01:08:32):
You say it all the time.
Speaker 7 (01:08:32):
I'm gonna write a check well, you ain't written a
check in thirty years. His name was Beaton. He was
on your books for like fifteen of those years. Like,
come on, get better, Jerry, get better with that. Nick,
have a great show. I guess hopefully i'd empire you
up too much. I still love you and respect you.
I just don't do the guests. Man, come on, Nick,
be Nick.
Speaker 4 (01:08:55):
Okay, the thing that you said that you said, yet
you were listening to to what I've been saying. Did
I say any of these players were great players? I
I haven't said one of these guys is a great
football player. They're they're not. They're not going to bring
in these great great play not not for that price.
(01:09:17):
Look what the salary cap is, and look what these
guys are getting. Uh so I haven't said any of
these guys are are are great players. Turpin is it
was a All Pro as a kick returner, and that's
who they re signed. These other guys probably aren't going
to be starters on a team that's that was below average,
(01:09:38):
probably around that that average part. So so I don't
I don't consider them great players. But because I'm not
here like spitting fire on all these you know, and
and saying, oh, why didn't they do this? And that
you know that that you want to say that I'm
I'm a yes man or whatever. I like Schottenheimer. How
(01:09:58):
many times have I said that?
Speaker 9 (01:10:00):
So?
Speaker 4 (01:10:01):
I like him as a person. I like him a lot.
I like what he's done, I like what he says.
What else have I said that?
Speaker 3 (01:10:09):
No?
Speaker 4 (01:10:10):
Nobody in the NFL history has ever won a game
in March or April or May or June July probably either.
So nothing matters right now. It's just, yeah, he's good,
he says the right things, he's doing something. You know,
they're building a good staff, everyone's excited, everyone is feeling
good about things because nothing's happening. The minute he could
(01:10:33):
have the greatest offseason, they could sign up all great players.
The minute that that they lose a game, then you
guys are gonna gonna change your tune. I get it
that that's the way it is. And I've and I've
said that, so I don't I don't understand. I don't
understand where that's coming from. Nico, You make that don't
(01:10:53):
make any sense to me. Some of the stuff that
you said the same same with Rob. You know, you're like,
why doesn't he listen to the fans. Well, I think
he's listened to to some. I mean, you know, you
obviously listen to some of the narratives. But if you
got some people that out here that actually believe that
that they don't make moves because they don't want to
spend money because they'd rather spend it in marketing, if
(01:11:15):
you really believe that, he didn't need to be listening
to those fans because those fans don't understand that that
is not anywhere close to reality of how it works
and how the salary cap works. These guys, these NFL owners,
there's more money out there in their pockets than you
guys can anyone can even fathom. So it's you're playing
(01:11:36):
on a completely different level. There's some really knowledgeable fans
out here, you know, and a lot of you guys
are are.
Speaker 1 (01:11:42):
But in certain.
Speaker 4 (01:11:43):
Aspects of it, it's it's not necessarily raality. We don't know,
we don't know some of the conversations that are that
are had behind it closed doors. It's the same that
goes back to that why aren't they signing people earlier?
Because if they signed them earlier to the deal that
was on the table, you would criticized him more than
you ever would because you're like, why did you sign
(01:12:04):
him to that deal? Well, he wanted to get it
done early, and getting it done early meant signing as this.
Speaker 1 (01:12:09):
So I don't know.
Speaker 4 (01:12:10):
When it comes to business, there's different. You know, there's
two sides to it all, and I think we know
that all right. We got to keep it going. Here
Dylan in Northport, Florida, Dylan.
Speaker 19 (01:12:18):
What's up, hey, Nick, what's going on today?
Speaker 12 (01:12:21):
Dude?
Speaker 19 (01:12:22):
This is kind of nuts here, Yeah, a little crazy?
Speaker 1 (01:12:25):
Yeah? Well, yes, yes, Dylan.
Speaker 19 (01:12:30):
Well, I'm pretty monitoring. I think I'll call him down
here and bring it down a notch. So the salary
cap thing doesn't make sense to me because owners got
to pay ninety percent of the cap and cash money
from twenty twenty four to twenty twenty six for the CBA,
so like he has to spend the cash, so don't
I don't get that argument. I called the floor and
said it, they got to spend the money. I disagree
(01:12:51):
with the way they spend their money sometimes, but the
money has got to be spent. Another caller was asking
about defensive tackles linebackers. The best one that are left.
The highest rated ones is Kaleis Campbell, even though he's
like eighty thousand years old in football years, he's still
the highest rated nose tackle, and then Eric Hendricks at linebacker,
So maybe make a play at those guys.
Speaker 12 (01:13:11):
And then, you.
Speaker 19 (01:13:13):
Know, we kind of all talked about how we didn't
think Dallas was gonna really participate in Wave one because
they have so many holes to fill, so they're gonna
have to sign a bunch of death players. And I mean,
I guess they participated in Wave one with the Osis signing,
so you can say that, Okay, I'm disappointed a little
bit that they didn't go after or didn't win. I
guess you could say the linebacker deal with green Law
(01:13:34):
or really, my guy was Splaine that I really wanted.
There was also some nose tackles out there like Tart
and Puna Ford. Didn't go after those guys or didn't
win those. I don't know what those negotiations were, if
they had any, But you know, as the fans right now,
they have nobody kind of in the middle of their
defense to stop the run. So I'm hoping they just
do something there because they keep signing free tackle or
(01:13:55):
three techniques, some edge flayers, and like, we need a
nose tackle, man, we don't have one. I think, Mazi,
like you said, my last call is a three tech
more than a one tech. So like, let's get somebody
in the middle who can do something against the run
or it's going to be twenty twenty four all over again.
Where teams that are just running for two hundred yards.
Speaker 6 (01:14:12):
A game on us.
Speaker 4 (01:14:13):
Yeah, I mean, I agree. The defensive tackle and linebacker.
I mean they have got to figure out how to
stop the run. And Osa, as good as as he
has been, that's not necessarily that his strength is is,
you know, as a as a run stopper. So it's
got to be a focus. It's one way or another
that they got to figure ot how to stop the run.
Speaker 19 (01:14:35):
Yeah, one more thing, man, just a quick pivot. Last week,
Rob called in and said something about a rebuild, that
we're not in a rebuild.
Speaker 8 (01:14:42):
I disagree.
Speaker 19 (01:14:43):
I think we are in a minor rebuild, and I
know I think you disagree as well with me. I
just think there's too many holes to fix in a
single off season, especially given kind of the history of
how the team does free agency. I think we're looking
at this free agency period in draft plus next year's
until we're really competitive again. Our cornerstones like Dak and
Seed and those really good guys might keep us afloat,
(01:15:05):
But I don't think we're really in shit, especially given
we have a new coaching staff as well, and that
takes a year or two to kind of get going.
In most cases, I think we're really in line for
twenty twenty six, and then twenty twenty seven is when
I'm kind of anticipating for us to be if everything
goes right, to be in that contention conversation again with
like the Lions and the Eagles and some of those
other teams. But I just want to get your thoughts
(01:15:26):
on that.
Speaker 4 (01:15:26):
Yeah, they're probably not, like, you know, ready to compete
at that high level this year, but some different, you know,
wild cards will throw you know, you'll have a factor
here and there of somebody like you know, like your
Dern Blands, Jake Ferguson type of guys. You got to
make those those leaps if you get some surprise players
(01:15:48):
that way that really take another level, or or you
you hit big in the draft, I mean a guy
that's ready, you know, think about what Micah Parsons was
able to do right off the bat. So it's gonna
take something like that and you know, a lot less
injuries and a lot more guys that that take that
that next leap, which just it just doesn't happen a
(01:16:09):
whole lot. So I agree with you on the fact
that they're probably in that same range of trying to
you know, you're gonna be competing for a playoff spot.
It's not gonna be easy in the division they're in
with with Washington now you know, getting better, uh, or
they're they're there. I mean they're Washington's in a championship
game and then they're only getting better because they they
got you know a lot of young players and they
(01:16:31):
got money to spend. So, uh, they're in good shape.
Philadelphia obviously in good shape. And then this is gonna
be a challenge for the Cowboys to to get to
the to the playoffs. But you know, I think they're
there as far as competition wise, They're gonna have to
get you know, somewhat lucky with some of these draft
picks and free agent hits to uh to take you know,
(01:16:51):
another leap this year. But sometimes do coaching staffs, it
can it can work that way. It can It can
happen that way when you kind of you know, you
change the culture completely. And right now they're in the
process of doing that. But again, we'll see what happens
when they get on the field. I mean, like, you know,
you can culture can be great, but if you're not
good enough to win games, then it doesn't really matter.
(01:17:11):
All right, one more real quick Tamra in Iowa.
Speaker 1 (01:17:15):
Hey, how are you?
Speaker 2 (01:17:18):
Yeah, I'm good.
Speaker 15 (01:17:18):
How are you good?
Speaker 1 (01:17:19):
What's up?
Speaker 9 (01:17:21):
Hyeh think about it. Then, So I thought everybody was
joking around about how many calls it takes.
Speaker 15 (01:17:27):
No, they are not.
Speaker 9 (01:17:30):
I called in five hundred times.
Speaker 1 (01:17:31):
Oh my god, we'll thank you.
Speaker 7 (01:17:34):
I know.
Speaker 9 (01:17:34):
That's why I told Chris I need to hear you go.
Speaker 1 (01:17:37):
Yeah, yeah, we'll give.
Speaker 17 (01:17:39):
You that for that.
Speaker 9 (01:17:42):
And so then I said, I don't buying a holding
because I remember why I called it in in the
first place. And so one of them, so you know me,
I always come in with a couple serious things and
then a couple of fun things.
Speaker 1 (01:17:53):
Gotta be quick with we with all of them.
Speaker 9 (01:17:56):
So let's right, Okay, Well, okay, so McCarthy, I told you,
so he's gone not sure about the new coaches, like
what they're saying, let's put the let's put it where
you know where it counts, put your money. But yeah,
you put your mouth where your money is or whatever
that's saying is you know what, I want to see
what they do. And then the other one was, oh,
(01:18:20):
it's something else. Oh uh so people are talking a
lot about it's about Jerry Jones and how he's being quiet.
I don't mind that because I didn't like the whole
we're all in when he clearly wasn't. So I think
being quiet is a really good move for him. And
there I am, and uh, Brian brought us kind of
(01:18:41):
said it, well, he said it better than I did.
He's like, make smart decisions, and I'm like, yes, whatever
Brian's saying, I'm picking up what he's laying down. And
so my fun things are when are we doing the
storyline teams? And if I'm not on there, I'm okay.
So you're pressure, but I would like to know, like
(01:19:02):
I would like to hear the roster. I'm sure everybody
else is anxiously awaiting that as well.
Speaker 4 (01:19:07):
Yeah we're getting there, uh, not being voted on today,
that's probably a good thing, but uh no, we're getting close.
Usually it's it's like the end of this fiscal year,
which is like right now.
Speaker 1 (01:19:22):
So I would imagine in the next but I don't
want to.
Speaker 4 (01:19:24):
I don't want to do it during a show where
we're talking free agency and stuff like that. I was
definitely by the end of the month, and I'll see
if I get adding an extra show for the week.
But you know, if the bosses allow me to do that,
I can maybe get one more show so I can
put that team.
Speaker 9 (01:19:40):
Out there and you can't a sponsor right this year,
working on it, working, I have one more fun things. Well,
I don't know if it is or not fun. Fun
for me, maybe not for you. It's so hard to
get in here. You to think about expanding on the
storyline and having like two different pots, like I think
Brian would be excellent, by the way, not that I
(01:20:02):
don't love you, because I do love you in my
favorite but it's just hard to get in and so
I'm cooking up now.
Speaker 4 (01:20:08):
Nice all right, have a good one, Thanks for the call,
Thanks for all the calls today.
Speaker 1 (01:20:14):
Good stuff.
Speaker 4 (01:20:14):
We will talk about it next Wednesday when we do
our next show.
Speaker 1 (01:20:18):
See you.
Speaker 4 (01:20:19):
How many different things have happened between now and then.
All right for Chris Beam, I'm Nick Eatman. Thanks to
everyone for helping on the chat line as well. We'll
see you next week on Cowboys Storyline.
Speaker 7 (01:20:27):
See you.
Speaker 3 (01:20:28):
This has been a production of Dallascowboys dot Com and
the Dallas Cowboys Football Club
