The following He is a production of Dallascowboys dot Com
and the Dallas Cowboys Football Club. Cowboys This is Cowboys
storyline presented by Gillette, the official shave of the Dallas Cowboys.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
Here's Nick Eatman.
Speaker 3 (00:25):
What's up? Welcome to Cowboys storyline presented by Gellelette. It's Thursday,
October the thirtieth. Winding up here this month of October.
It's been kind of scary, just like just like Halloween
is supposed to be, right, it's been a scary up
and down. Is this one of those haunted house seasons
where you know it's you know what's coming, It's still
(00:46):
scary any anyway, that's probably what the What the next
when we look at the schedule is kind of what
it looks like. But we'll let you guys talk about it.
Eight eight eight eight five five two two nine seven.
Chris says, the lines are open today. There is one
color on the line. But this might be your day
if it's one. If you're one of those that says
I can ever get in, well maybe today's your day.
(01:08):
Let's see if we can we can hear for some
new callers, or at least ones we haven't heard from
in a while. But let's go to Chris and Saratoga Springs,
New York. He's first, Chris, what's up?
Speaker 4 (01:20):
Happy Thursday?
Speaker 5 (01:21):
Nick? How are you?
Speaker 6 (01:21):
My man?
Speaker 7 (01:22):
Good?
Speaker 3 (01:22):
Thank you?
Speaker 8 (01:24):
Just need to comment a little bit on the defense,
and then we've been talking about it on the show.
Linebackers obviously have to play better. It's you know, there's
no doubt about it. I'm hoping we go out a
Gates to some kind of linebacker. Jerry said it, we're
not just one player away. I agree one hundred percent
we're not. But if we can get a linebacker, get
(01:46):
Demo back, get Revel back, and get our two safeties back.
I think that's not just one player. That's four or
five players that can really help our defense. And it's
definitely needed. During the offseason, I said, we should have
shined Greenwaw from San fran and we didn't want to
pony up a little bit on the money to get him.
But now we're you know, fast forward now to you know,
(02:06):
this time the season, we're looking, you know, we need
linebacker help. So I really think we should go out
and sign a linebacker. I would be willing to give
up like a second round type pick to get somebody
that can step right in there and play and help
Demo when he comes back. What are your thoughts on that?
Speaker 3 (02:21):
Yeah, all right, well thanks for the call, Chris. You know,
Drake Greenlaw was a player that I actually was told
to start working on a story when it was that
time of free agency. That looked like he was going
to agree to terms. It was really close, and then
last second he changed and went went to Denver. And
(02:44):
I don't believe the money was that was was different
at all. Honestly, it was just the last second thing.
And again I don't know all the details. I just
know that it's not like they didn't want them or
they didn't think they could get him. It was it
was so close that it was like, yeah, it looks
like we're going to they're gonna be signing him, and
then all of a sudden, you know, it's not the
(03:04):
first time that's happened. Right with Randy Gregory too, I'm
sure we had a story done on that as well.
So I don't know. I don't know. I don't want
to speculate. I can speculate on some players, but on
green Law, I don't really know why that happened. But
you're right about linebacker, and you're right about getting some
help in here. It's a it's a it's one of
(03:25):
those tricky positions because you want those guys to be quick,
be able to get to the football, be aware. And
usually those guys that do that are aren't the biggest
guys in the world. And so we saw that with
Shamar James. He can he can definitely get to the football.
But everybody I'm sure has seen the touchdown run from
Denver in the first run of the game for the
(03:46):
touchdown where the guard basically got to the next level
and blocked James into the third level and then turned
around and blocked another guy down and another guy and
so he had a nice little highlight. But Chamar James,
that's kind of what you get when you get a quick,
speedy linebacker that can get to the football. Marquis Bell
(04:08):
showed us that, you know, he had one hundred tackles
one year, but when when the guards wanted to get
to the next level and block them, it was a mismatch.
So remember mismatches worked both ways. Irene and Falls Church,
Virginia is next.
Speaker 9 (04:22):
Hey, good morning, how you doing there?
Speaker 3 (04:24):
How are you.
Speaker 10 (04:26):
All right?
Speaker 9 (04:27):
Looking at Cardinals. You know, we got Kyler Murray with
his runs. He's had at least twenty five yards per
game each of the games he's played this year, so
I always have to look out for that. That hasn't
killed us as much this year since the first game
of the season, so maybe we can contain it.
Speaker 11 (04:43):
I don't know, but their offense isn't that amazing, although
I will say when I was looking at fantasy football
waiver wires for running backs, Bam Knight apparently is emerging.
Speaker 9 (04:53):
So I hope that's not the Bam Knight breakout game
of the year, you know whatever. On running for running,
but what we'll see with our defense on their end,
their defense, I mean, I wish we were nineteenth in
the league. They're nineteenths in the league.
Speaker 12 (05:07):
They don't.
Speaker 9 (05:07):
They're a third worst pass rushing team, So I think
that Dak will drop them down in the rankings. I
think he's gonna have a clean pocket put up the yards.
Speaker 5 (05:19):
I guess I'll give it.
Speaker 9 (05:21):
I think it's gonna be I think this will be
another like thirty five. I don't like thirty eight. Let's
give him thirty eight to twenty seven Cowboys.
Speaker 3 (05:31):
All right, thanks, the average goes down. Remember this team
scored forty points in each of the three home games
this year, so thirty eight twenty seven would be still
pretty good and probably would keep the average at forty.
Maybe I don't know about that math, but I think so.
I think it would still be around forty. But you know,
(05:54):
with this defense, I mean there's been games we've seen
thirty eight points wouldn't win two of the games in
regulation this year, so we I take that back. I
guess it was thirty seven, thirty seven against the Packers,
so they would have won. But uh, you know my
point there, I mean, thirty you got to score points
with this defense.
Speaker 8 (06:13):
We know that.
Speaker 3 (06:13):
And and Ireen was talking about how, you know, the
offense for the Cardinals hasn't been that great and there's
there's a few teams, you know, I mean denver Den,
I mean Sean Payton was I mean, the storyline going
into the Broncos game was, is Sean Payton gonna give
up the the play calling duties? That's how that's how
(06:34):
bad it's gotten. And he said, no, he's gonna They're
gonna stick with that, but they're gonna make some big changes,
So I mean that's where their offense was at the time.
So you know, the Cowboys have been a get right
game obviously for a lot of offenses. So with a
with a week off, for the Cardinals to just look
at this and look at what they're doing, Uh yeah,
I expect them to come in and give the Cowboys
(06:56):
a lot of problems, just like every other offense has
this year. Josh and Princeton, Texas's next.
Speaker 7 (07:02):
Hey, Nicky, Josh, Hey, I have no idea what to
think about this game. Haven't had great experiences recently, so
I want to play along with the fantasy game that
your dad came up with. Yeah, and I can give.
Speaker 13 (07:19):
You mine real quick.
Speaker 3 (07:20):
Okay, let's do it quick, because that's it's eleven. It's
eleven people, but let's let's do it quick. What do
you got?
Speaker 7 (07:25):
Okay, I'm an just name Moore?
Speaker 4 (07:27):
Okay.
Speaker 14 (07:28):
On offense, I got Romo, Emitt Smith, Dad Bryant, C
d Lamb, tight end, Jayan noverchecked offensive line, Terrence Smith,
Barry Allen Travis, Frederick, Nate Newton, Eric Williams. On defense,
I got Michael and Charge Haley, Jay Radlift and Leon
(07:49):
lett I got Dion and Trayvon as my corners, Darren
Woodson and Charlie Waters as my safeties and linebacker. I
have Sean Lee, dat Wynn and Ken Norton.
Speaker 7 (08:00):
Nice.
Speaker 3 (08:00):
Okay, good stuff. Who's your kicker?
Speaker 7 (08:05):
All right?
Speaker 3 (08:05):
Sounds good? All right, all good?
Speaker 15 (08:08):
All right?
Speaker 3 (08:09):
Josh, appreciate that. You know that that's a that's a
fun game, and especially if you do it like that,
I mean, like because it's gonna come down to how
old you know people are and what they've seen what
they haven't seen. Obviously, Josh seems to be a little
bit younger generation. Now Charlie Waters makes the list, So
I'll give you a lot of credit for that. As
far as you know, mixing it up a little bit,
(08:32):
I don't know, leon Lett Ratliffe, I mean you know
that's where I was like, Okay, those are great, great
picks you made me. Maybe you didn't see Bob Lily
and Randy White. I didn't see Bob Lilly, I saw
Randy White. But I love I love this perspective because
that's kind of that's kind of what it is, and
you can't go wrong. That's one of these things. These
are great because it's undefeated. You're not going to be wrong,
(08:56):
you know, but there's some that's a really good defense.
And I and I see some some great players, you know,
the DeMarcus Wears and Randy White, Bob Lily, any of
your linebackers really on Lee Roy Jordan. I mean, got
a lot of Ring of Honor Hall of Famers not
in there. That's what makes this thing good because it's
a it's fun. But I but I don't think we're
(09:16):
gonna We're not gonna do that for the re call
because that's one of those things. It takes a little
bit of time. But that's good. Thanks for doing that, Josh,
you got at that end. Today, let's go to Big
Mo in California. Big Mo.
Speaker 4 (09:26):
Hey, it's Big Mo from CALLI. Man, how you doing today?
Speaker 3 (09:28):
I'm good man, How are you?
Speaker 4 (09:30):
I'm doing okay?
Speaker 5 (09:31):
Man?
Speaker 4 (09:32):
Hey listen. You know I've been looking at tape and
you know, at the end of the day, these guys
are professional players, and it looks to me like they're
not buying into this scheme. You know, they look lost
their There are two steps behind the offense out there,
and I just want your thoughts on.
Speaker 12 (09:53):
Has Eberflus lost the defensive locker room.
Speaker 8 (09:57):
Yeah, and my yeah.
Speaker 4 (09:59):
And my second point would be, do you think this defense.
Speaker 12 (10:03):
At some times should maybe consider going to a five
man line to help stop the run. And also, you know,
maybe put deron bland On Arizona's number one receiver and
roll the coverage to the other guys. And I'll get
your thoughts on that and watch you next time.
Speaker 3 (10:25):
All right, appreciate that. You know, somebody mentioned that to
me the other day as well, and I thought, yeah,
I hadn't even thought about that, but like bland On,
Courtland Sutton or somebody like that, that sounds good. And
and this is where this is. This is probably not
(10:48):
good for Cowboy fans to hear because they just paid
him a lot of money. I don't know if he's
that corner. I mean, I'm he's a good corner. He's
a really good corner, and he's and he's made it,
and he's a playmaking type corner. But I don't know
if there is a shutdown corner and you don't see
it happen a lot. And and you know, credit credit
(11:08):
Denver for being able to do it for a while
there with with Sutton on on pickings and and then
they they didn't let CD really burn him at all.
So that that's that's a great defensive scheme there. Uh,
there's been so much in and out of this defense
that to go back to your question of has eber
(11:29):
Flus lost the defense, I mean he's lost the players
like that he thought he was going to have. I mean,
that's that's what he's lost. I don't think he's lost
them as far as them buying in. I just think
that that it has been a carousel so much of
this guy's been coming in here and then this guy,
and now we're moving this safety to the corner, and
(11:50):
and and that he's on the practice squad. Now he's elevated,
Now he's up. Now, you know. I mean Zion Childrens
goes to the Texans, he come back, and he's probably
gonna have to play this week. There's so many things
moving parts going on, and it's not in a good way.
I mean, you're losing some really really key players. I
don't think they they I don't think they're not buying in.
I don't think he's lost them. I think it's it's
(12:11):
just been it's been a it was an uphill battle
from the start. This year. It was an uphill battle.
If Michael was on the team, then he's not on
the team. And and they have not replaced them. And
that's that's just the quarterback sits there for too long.
So we we look at it and go, man, who's
whose guy is this? It's it's nobody's guy. I mean, like,
(12:34):
like the quarterback had six seconds, so of course he's
gonna get open. I mean, and so and I'm not
saying there's no bus. I'm not saying that they have
not done a good job. It doesn't look like they practice.
I get all that, you're you're not wrong and all that.
This is an excuses. It's just saying that that. I
don't think he's lost the team, I think or the defense.
I think he's lost too many key players to make
(12:56):
this work. And and it's just it's been a bad mix.
It's just there's no other way around. It's been a
bad mix. All right. Ali, He's next. Ali? Where you
at Portugal?
Speaker 15 (13:07):
Good morning there?
Speaker 10 (13:09):
Yes, it's not very Portugal. Have you been there?
Speaker 3 (13:12):
No? Just kidd if if the Cowboys haven't played there,
I haven't been there. No, I have not been there.
But man, it sounds nice.
Speaker 10 (13:23):
Is there January of everybody to have the biggest surf
contest to have one hundred foot waves, people that come
all the big surfaces that come from all over the world,
and it looks like a joint mountain the surf right down.
So I'm here a little good practice shot, but I've
gotta take for you, and I have a question. Okay,
(13:47):
I'm gonna give a shout out to all the storyliners,
because truly is not easy to be a Cowboys fan
go up and down every week.
Speaker 12 (13:58):
I'm not a coach.
Speaker 10 (13:59):
I can judge the defensive coordinators and all that that's
above my pay grade. But sitting in my little room yesterday,
I tried to figure out if I can pinpoints, see
if you agree with it. Since twenty seventeen, only first
round and the second round draft picks, we only have
(14:22):
three people, three players on our team that CV Dicks
and Tyler Smith, and most of them don't not even
with the team or.
Speaker 8 (14:34):
At the best our average.
Speaker 10 (14:37):
So I'm saying to myself the lack of producing every year,
maybe one or two, I mean lower level, the lower draphtics,
we do good, but I don't know if the pro
scout or national scout or front office. I think we
should do a lot better, so we supply just live
(15:00):
better play every year. That's not including Michael Parson Marsa
being traded them. But I want to see your take,
what you think just the first and the second round
be emphasized that we only every year you have fifteen
or sixteen first rounders, So just trying to trade the
second round and get some sure bets versus mediocracy. Love you, brother,
(15:28):
I will talk to you later.
Speaker 3 (15:29):
All right, thank you? All right, Ollie, be safe wherever
you are, Portugal. But wherever you're going sounds like you're
over the all over the map. I think I'm understanding,
I mean understanding. What you're saying is you're not drafting
that well past the first round, so why not load
up and get some first guys with first round grades?
(15:50):
And that is the key. I mean, like some year's
first round talent, there's about you know what they would
call first round grades about fifteen seventeen, sometimes sometimes twelve thirteen,
and uh, you know you're not gonna always get that.
Even if you're drafted in in the twenties, you're still
gonna get it's a first round pick. But it's not
(16:10):
necessarily you know, what they consider to have a first
round grade happens, happens a lot. You know that they
don't if they picked two guys the next year, that
they probably won't have two first round grades. I would
imagine they have one. But uh, and I think to
all these point is to you know, make sure you know,
(16:30):
package some things up, package your second package, your first
move up. Uh, don't be sitting there on the borderline
of eighteen nineteen twenty and get getting the top fifteen,
getting the top twelve. Yeah, I mean, and that's that's fair.
I mean, it's fair to say. I think going back
and looking at the draft, I mean, I'm pretty sure
(16:52):
they told us that Tyler Smith had a first round grade,
that they had a first round grade on Tyler Smith.
Nobody believed that. No one thought, No, wasn't even I mean,
there's a lot of the draft experts that covered everything
that had him in the third round. I know there
was a lot of scrambling going on on draft day
that year, when when you know, words started coming out
like who you know, who are you gonna take? And
(17:12):
I remember fitting, well, I'm gonna take this Tyler Smith
out of Tulsa, and I remember we had some some
people around here that that didn't have him rated that high.
There's some scrambling going on. But but but they they
had him as a first round pick. Males Smith was
not did not have first round grade. I don't believe
Goeyton did, either Booker or twelve. Obviously he did. Uh,
(17:33):
So you know it's uh that's where that's kind of
where it is. But still draft, you know, second round,
third round, fourth round, that that's that's kind of where
the problem is as well as you know, I look
at the third round. The third round to me is
why this team hasn't been that great. You know in
(17:54):
the draft. Third round is where do you expect him
to be a starter or No. I mean you can
go back the last ten years or so, and I'm
looking at Chaz Green, Malik Collins, Jordan Lewis. That was
a good pick, Michael Gallup, Yeah, Connor mcgovernor, Neville Gallimore, Osa,
(18:18):
Chauncey Golston, nay Sean Wright. I mean that's that was solid.
I guess with Osa, Jalen Tolbert, Overshown bbe so revel.
We'll see, we'll see. But that's to me where those
are some solid players, but you're not. I don't think
(18:38):
any of those guys have made a Pro Bowl. And
that's asking a lot for a third round pick, but
that's kind of why teams get to where they are.
I think you have to steal something. Now, I picked
the third round. I could have gone with the fourth round.
The fourth round there have been some success. I mean,
how many guys have been franchised out of the fourth
round for the Cowboys? I mean Dak twice, Elton Schultz
(19:00):
was franchised. I mean yeah, I mean I think I'm
missing somebody here that for sure. Pollard maybe, I mean
like they they you know. And then Jake Ferguson's been
really good. So fourth round has been a better round.
But the third round is one of those where you
kind of just expect that once in a while they're
gonna hit big and they just haven't yet. They're all right,
(19:21):
let's go Randy in San Antonio.
Speaker 6 (19:25):
Hey, Nick, how are you doing, sir?
Speaker 3 (19:27):
Good? How are you?
Speaker 6 (19:29):
I'm doing well? Love the show. Nick Gedle hasn't allowed
me to call in as much, but love the show.
Love how much of a neighborhood the storylines become so
love that didn't want to weigh in. I would really
like to see a trade. I love the draft, so
draft capital cum draft I love. But right now, if
you tell me you don't make a trade, you're saying,
(19:52):
after eight weeks of what we've seen that the defense
is fine if you don't do anything. And I know
you have to have trade partners. You know, I don't
need to see the first round, but do something to
show you're trying to make it better this year. Yeah,
that's what I'd like to see. And then real quick,
I won't do the offense, but I wanted to weigh
in on my fantasy storyline defense. So I'll go Lily
(20:16):
and White will be my tackles. I'm going Hayley and
Harvey Martin as my ends. I'm going Chuck Halley at linebacker,
with Sean Lee playing my week's side. I couldn't think
of who to play strong side. I know he ended
up in the middle, but I'll go Ken Norton Junior
playing my strong side linebacker. I know eventually he moved
to the middle permanently, but that gives me three great linebackers.
(20:38):
And then I'll take Dion and Everson as my corners
and Woodson and Waters as my safeties.
Speaker 3 (20:45):
Nice, all right, I like it. That's good stuff, Manath,
thanks for the call. Just just so you know, you know,
I've said this all the time. You know, like opinions
are undefeated around here and all that true. But if
we're doing a team here, I mean, better just pick
one safety because other one's locked in. I'm not locking
in any other position, no other position. Take any quarterback
(21:08):
you want, any running back, and the receiver. I tell
you this, there's only one safety available for this spot
because I mean, nobody else is sat in this chair.
So Woodson's come here several times. Woodson's on the team.
Speaker 4 (21:21):
Now.
Speaker 3 (21:22):
Luckily, I think the three people that have turned theirs in,
I'm out. This isn't a project. I'm not saying turn
it in. The three people that have have given their
answers all have had Woodson. And if I hear one
that doesn't have Woodson and be like what I didn't
hear you, you're missing a spot here. Darren Woodson's on
the team. That's the only picture that I've that I've
got in there. Good stuff though, a lot of fun
(21:42):
to do that. Let's go to break real quick. On
story one be right back.

Kin, sir, I'm good. Thank you for asking.
Speaker 19 (24:24):
That's good. I'm glad to hear that.
Speaker 5 (24:26):
Hey.
Speaker 19 (24:28):
My prediction for tomorrow, or my prediction in case I
don't get in tomorrow is thirty twenty seven Dallas, okay.
And then Brian from Casey brought this up. He was
on the break the other day. He was talking about
maybe the lack of communication is Murray the one that
has the green dot.
Speaker 8 (24:46):
Maybe he's not.
Speaker 19 (24:47):
Communicating what E reflus once on the defense, Maybe he's
not communicat kting right may He said, maybe we should
give that green dot to somebody else.
Speaker 4 (24:58):
What do you think?
Speaker 3 (25:00):
Ah, I'm fine with that. I mean, I mean there's
more to it than just saying all right, well you
know now you have it. I mean, like, because the
position that you play is also kind of where you
know you would want those calls to come from. So
it's not just about switching helmets so much, but it
could happen, and a bye week is a time where
(25:21):
where that that could happen. I'm just reluctant to say
everything goes back to overshown, you know, I don't. I
don't think he's gonna play at that level. Not at
that level. He's not gonna play that much to you know,
to start off with, to say, all right, you're taking
all these responsibilities. He just needs to ease in there
and play. So I don't know if he's if he's
(25:41):
the guy for it. And you know, I don't know
if we're too far removed from Sandborn coming back and
playing some I mean, he was leading the team in tackles.
I know he wasn't setting the world on fire or
anything like that, but I mean he was playing, you know,
just as good as anybody else. And maybe maybe that
that's a situation that they could go roll back into.
(26:03):
But you know, whatever you do, whatever you give that
that duty to whoever you're playing in there, you've got
some issues. Nobody's perfect. Murray Sanborn, smart James, He's not perfect.
They're over shown. He's not going to be you know,
ready to be to play all those snaps that got
to keep him on a pitch town a little bit.
So you know, that's that's one of those words. It's
(26:26):
gonna be a little bit before I think Overshown is
a you know, one hundred percent of the snaps type
of guy. So all right, Robin Vegas is next?
Speaker 20 (26:36):
Hey? Nick?
Speaker 3 (26:37):
Hey, Rob?
Speaker 21 (26:39):
Well he did it, Nick, he said the quiet pot
out loud. Oh, mister Jerry Jones, something that me and
you been going back and forth on for years.
Speaker 3 (26:51):
What do you say?
Speaker 11 (26:52):
Oh?
Speaker 21 (26:52):
I always I always, well you said, he said. He
basically said, the Cowboys are my number one priority, uh,
oil and gases. And I always said, this guy is
He said that he just invested a billion dollars into
oil and gas and and he says, that's why I'm
(27:14):
talking to you, and I'm not trying to fix the
Dallas Cowboys defense. And I know it sounds tongue in cheap,
but it's the truth. And that's you know, I've said
this for years. The man is a businessman. Oh, every
owner is a businessman. The difference is most owners hire
people to run the football team, but Jerry doesn't. This
(27:40):
is his fantasy football team. And in the beginning when
he invested one hundred and forty million, Yeah, he gave
it his all. He was all hands on, whatever it
takes to win, let's do it. I gotta make money. Well,
that mission has accomplished.
Speaker 4 (27:53):
It's a level he made.
Speaker 21 (27:54):
It's the team's worth eleven billion. And now he's moved
on to other stuff. And now when you invest a
billion dollars into oil and gas, that's going to be
your number one priority because he said he could turn
that billion into a hundred billion. So i'm you know,
and that's why as a fan and the players.
Speaker 3 (28:13):
That's why I can't stop the run.
Speaker 21 (28:15):
I mean no, but yes, that is why they can't
stop the run because the man doesn't is not trying
to win a championship. He is not trying to build
a championship caliber team. I'm sorry. At eighty something years old,
you can't be concentrating on both. If you were going
to hire somebody for your company and you told the guy,
(28:35):
you know, over time is required, and the guy said, well,
I can't work over time because I have another job
I have to go to. You wouldn't hire him because
you want somebody to give one hundred percent to your company. Well,
Jerry's not giving one hundred percent. You cannot And I'm
sorry that that's terrible for US fans. It's it's and
(28:56):
it's bad for the players. And the best thing he
can do is step down and let actually other people
run it. But he will not do that. And he
just said the choiet part out loud. And I always
said he's he he would like to win. He just
doesn't want to do what it takes to it. He
wants to look into it. And you're seeing that. I
(29:19):
don't see him doing anything at the trade deadline that
would that should have been done already. He should have
made that move already. He's going to wait till where
a couple of games back and he's going to say,
I'll hold on to the picks. And why because he
doesn't want to take on these contracts. He rather draft
guys he has control for four or five years and
(29:40):
you know, doesn't have to pay them big contracts. And
then unfortunately when the superstars come up, he kind of
reluctant to pay. Look what he did with Micah. You know,
he has no problem playing paying. Like you said, Deron Bland,
who is a good player, but he's not a great player.
Osa you know, good player, but he doesn't you know,
(30:02):
Like I said, it's not his number one priority, and
he just said it out loud, and as I said,
it just sucks.
Speaker 3 (30:09):
All right, Thanks for the call, Rob. Let's go to
a jr. In Evandale Arizona. Hold on right, Jr. What's up?
Speaker 6 (30:21):
Hey?
Speaker 5 (30:22):
Good morning, Nick? How's everything in Dallas's good?
Speaker 3 (30:25):
How are you all right?
Speaker 5 (30:26):
A little bit more optimistic than I've been, I guess
because I'm just an optimistic person. So the Cowboys are
in the playoffs. The actually they every game is a
playoff game now if they want to actually make it
to the postseason, So they have to win probably at
least seven more games, That's what I think.
Speaker 3 (30:48):
Yeah, I seven out of nine.
Speaker 5 (30:52):
Yeah, everyone trying to hit on the points I was
going to make. I watched I was watching the Chiefs
game and watching Bolton and channel play and hears Shtel
screaming out crack crack, because you saw that toss crack
coming from the Commanders And just don't ever hear that
for the Cowboys. No one's calling that I and I
(31:13):
was it the Kansas City friend about Murray and the
green dot and I completely agree with that, but also
you don't have Hooker. Hooker's not out there, and Wilson's
not out there, and just no experience on the defense.
I don't think they're helping it helping the defense as
a whole out. If you look at the offense, the
green dot guy in the offense, he sees everything, he's
(31:37):
moving people around to making decisions, and I just don't
see that happening on our defense. And I don't think
it's going to get better. We just have to outscore everybody.
Speaker 7 (31:46):
That's how I feel.
Speaker 3 (31:47):
Yeah, And that's and that's the way it's happened for
the wins that they've had, they have outscored people. You know,
this isn't a twenty to seventeen type team that's gonna
win some games like that. I don't see that.
Speaker 5 (32:00):
And you know what I don't see. I was watching.
I don't even know what game it was, so I
watched way too much football. The linebacker runs up and
moves physically moves the defensive path of over because that's
where the play is going. And I just don't ever
see that from our guys. And I don't know why
that is, but I think we need when that and
Overshown won't share that problem. But we got the best
(32:23):
we can and hopefully we can get better. That's all
I got. Had a great day and go Cowboys.
Speaker 3 (32:28):
All right, thanks appreciate that. Uh yeah, I mean that's
not sounded It sounded optimistic. You said optimistic to start
the call, but uh but yeah, no, I hear you.
The defense is just it's so alarming that you don't
even you don't expect it to be, like, you don't
(32:49):
expect the way. Well, if this guy comes back, this
guy comes back, and we can you know, see this
this happening. No, not not really, I don't. I don't
expect Overshowing to fix a lot of things. I mean,
I mean, I think he's a better player than what
you have, but I think it's going to take some
time revel I can't imagine him doing a whole lot
(33:10):
this year. I mean, he hasn't played football since Week
three of East Carolina season last year, so you know,
there was a lot of projections that he is a
first round type player, but we still have to see
that and he had you know, he has, he's been out,
so I don't I hear them say like help on
the way. I don't necessarily see that like where the
(33:31):
where the help is? It's not stuff of guys getting
you know, injured coming back the safeties those guys like, yeah,
they're better than the others. But it's not like Malie
Cooker and and Donovan Wilson haven't been criticized for their
play when they are healthy. So just them coming back
is certainly going to cure everything. It's a it's a
(33:52):
problem on defense, and and you're asking your offense to
do you know, to just be absolutely perfect, and they're
just not able to do that all the time, all right,
you know. And and to go back to Rob, I
don't have an answer for that quote. I don't know.
I didn't see it obviously, you know, until I mean
(34:13):
or obviously didn't hear it, you know, so you know,
whether it was a joke or not, I mean, I
don't know. I think what it shows though, and that
you know, there's there's other there's other people that are
doing more of the things here. I mean, that's that
is certainly happening here. I mean, so you know, Jerry
is the owner, no doubt about it. He's and he's
(34:35):
the you know, the general manager. But as far as
you know the day to day making the moves and
the decisions and all that, I think I think we
know and we've seen that over the time that you know,
it's Steven Jones is doing most of that. Will McLay
as well, so those guys and they're all doing stuff.
(34:55):
You know, we don't know what's happening behind the scenes
and all that. But I think don't really believe that
quote as being true. And if it, if there is
some truth to it, then I think it goes to
show just just where just who's doing what around here,
uh with the cowboys. So but again we're all just
(35:15):
would just speculate and I and I get it. I mean,
there are certain people fans, you know, callers on this show,
media members, any chance if they could rip Jerry, they'll
they'll do it, you know, and that and that's that's
what happens. And it's a bad week to say it
too after a loss. You can say it after a
win because we know how these fans are, especially the one,
you know, our captain. I mean, there's no more roller
(35:36):
coaster than than Rob So and that's what being a
Dallas cowboy fan is all right, Zach in Germany's next?
Speaker 5 (35:44):
Nick?
Speaker 3 (35:45):
You all right? I'm good? How are you good?
Speaker 15 (35:48):
That's fun to rip Jerry for a second. Kidding whatever,
What I really want to talk about? So I saw
something the other day Marcus Moser a post that it
was related to our defense, right, And what it was
referring to is over the last six or seven seasons,
there's only one player that we actually drafted under the
(36:09):
consensus average draft position for that player's capital, and it
was Micah Parsons. I looked through the stat line and
what it's basically referring to is we tend to overreach
on those players and most of them haven't worked out.
Not all because you can you can add guys like
Bland or maybe Osa in there that that have. But
(36:29):
do you think that there's a different strategy we need
to approach when it comes to those players. I look
at defensive tackles a great example. I've said at the
last few seasons when I called in, we just cannot
draft that position. Well, one, do you think we need
to do to fix drafting when it comes to defensive players?
And then the second question I had do you see
us being buyers or sellers or are we going to
(36:52):
stay put when it comes to the trade deadline. What
is your opinion on.
Speaker 3 (36:55):
Well, I'll say this, I because I got you know,
we've got nine games of this and we're doing this show,
you know what, fifty more times. I want them to
be buyers. I don't want. I don't want. I'm not
not interested in every single week going through, you know,
and this team struggling, and then we talk about the
(37:16):
Vikings game, the Chargers game and all that, when all
people really want to talk about is this guy looks
pretty good at this college and he could be drafted
in the top ten. And I hope that we lose
games because I want to have a better pick. I
hate all that stuff. So I want them to be buyers.
I want them to to kind of, you know, you know, compete.
I mean, do what your what your signs say, what
(37:39):
your t shirts say, what your backpacks say, and all
that kind of stuff. You know, if you want to
compete every day, then compete every day. Compete every day.
And that's why I think the biggest problem is is
it doesn't look like they're competing on Wednesday and Thursday
and Friday. It doesn't. It doesn't look like it. It
doesn't look like we've got the great practices out there
where you know, the off is given it to the defense,
(38:01):
but then the defense comes back. Now, we don't see
that happening because it doesn't translate that way. Man, I honestly,
we're not allowed to watch practice. How bad do you
think that is? Seriously, your first team offense going up
against your second team, now the second team defense, not
(38:21):
the guys that are starting on this defense, second team.
How bad do you think that is every every day
in practice? It's gotta be terrible. Now, the answer another
part of your questions act about the draft. There's there's
a couple of things to this that that Again I'm
not I don't want to throw an excuse, but the
(38:44):
fact of the matter is is that you're drafting guys
and to develop them. But how many defensive coordinators since
twenty twenty? How many defense defensive coordinators have we seen?
I mean, it was Nolan and then he it didn't
last long obviously, and then dan Quinn that was that
was pretty good. I mean it was a really good coordinator.
(39:06):
But then since then we've seen a lot, we've seen changes.
You know, and you're probably gonna see more. You know,
when we talk about Zimmer and you talk about Eberflus,
just think, just think if a new coordinator comes in
next year, if that, if that does happen, I'm thinking
of an overshown that's been here since what twenty twenty one,
(39:30):
twenty twenty two, I mean overshown, I mean or twenty
twenty three for overshown. But he would have four different
coordinators in four years, because I mean you'd have Dan
Quinn and then Zimmer and then ebra Flus and if
another guy comes in then I mean. So what I'm
saying is I'm looking at the at the at the
Osa's and the Chauncey Golstons and and any of these players,
(39:51):
you know, Mazzie Smith, of course, I mean, yes, they
they aren't as good. These guys haven't been as good
because Michael Parsons could throw and other coordinators as well,
but guys that need a little bit more developing. It
hasn't been a great place for defensive players to be
because there has been so much change. That's the problem.
I don't know if it's drafting right, it's getting the
right coordinator to come in here and fix this. I
(40:15):
need to go to break real quick on story on
and be right back after this.

What's up?
Speaker 11 (41:50):
Man?
Speaker 7 (41:51):
Ah?
Speaker 3 (41:52):
I'm good.
Speaker 20 (41:54):
I just wanted to concur on a couple of the
callers that they're right, and then I'll put it into
my perspective. I forget who it was the caller who
who ran down the draft the last ten years or
whatever it was right and Rob right, And here's my perspective.
(42:15):
I'm going to tie it all up. As I was
saying a few weeks ago, as you know, when we
had the GM question, what would you do or whatever?
My thing is, you have to hire the right people
and you have to stay with them. First of all,
you gotta come up with a philosophy, whatever it is.
(42:35):
You hire that person, those people, and you stick with
that philosophy. As far as the draft, you know, I
did some numbers here, I mean, we got thirty two
teams right.
Speaker 3 (42:48):
And Lester, hold on, Lester, I'm going to cut you
off for a second. I want to ask you said
hire you said, hire staff and keep that philosophy. What
what Okay, what if that doesn't work? Because the philosophy
has not changed. It's been draft, draft and maybe steal
some value in free agency. That hasn't changed. They haven't
(43:11):
gone and said this year we're gonna go big into
free agency. That that doesn't happen. So the philosophy hasn't changed,
and everyone's frustrated. Maybe the philosophy needs to change.
Speaker 20 (43:24):
Nicks as you go along, I mean, you know, he's
been a GM for about forty years, almost thirty years
or whatever. As you go along, you adapt, you say, Okay,
this philosophy not working. So let's start you know, doing
other things a little bit more, but stick with our
basic philosophy. But let's start doing this, you know, more
drafted whatever it is. If we're not doing whatever that is,
(43:46):
let's start doing it more. Okay. But so we got
thirty two teams, right, and so that's roughly you know,
they they get seven picks most of the time. I mean,
I mean some years it's more or less whatever. So
but I did the numbers. That's two hundred and twenty
(44:07):
four picks. You know, with all the teams. Now, if
you if you look at all the college players that's
coming out, and if you include you know, the black
colleges and and some of the players that come out
a little earlier, that's roughly about three thousand players. So
(44:28):
I mean, I'm just looking at this. So we can't
And when I say we, I mean all the gams
we can't find barn injury because we don't know about injuries.
Barring that, we can't find seven picks that shifts fit
whatevery system you're running. And I'm talking about all thirty
two gyms. That doesn't make any sense. You've got three
(44:48):
thousand picks roughly you can't find you can't find five.
I mean every year you should be at least find
five buy an injury. We don't know about injuries. That's
all I have. I want more to course BB playing
this week Cowboys.
Speaker 3 (45:06):
I hope, So I hope he does, and I think
he's on track to do that. All right, let's go.
Chris and Saratoga Springs started the show. I guess he's
gonna end it. Chris what's up.
Speaker 8 (45:18):
I just wanted to give you my two things my
fantasy defense, So I got Leroy, Jordan, Shawn Lee, Chuck
Holly's my linebackers. Defensive ends, I got where and Haley
the defensive tackles. I got Randy White and Bob Lilly
uh safety. Obviously, Will Woodson not my other one. I'm
gonna go Roy Williams. And then the DB's. I'm gonna
(45:41):
go Dion and Everson for my DB's and my last
thing real quick, as far as our draft strategy and
my opinion, I think they should lean more on William
mcclacause I think he's one of the best in the
business is talent evaluators, instead of more leaning towards who
we have at that defensive coordinator at that certain time,
(46:02):
because we're going through the defensive coordinators a lot, in
my opinion, so I think they should lean more on,
you know, Will mcclay's expertise and let him do more
of the picking of these players than more such as
like Dan Quinn. I think I'm pretty sure he wonted
Bobby Smith a lot that didn't go too well for us.
But I think they should lean on Will McClay and
give him more autonomy as far as you know, the
(46:25):
draft picks that we that we pick.
Speaker 3 (46:27):
That's all I got, all right, And I don't know
if that that they don't do that. I mean, and
you know, he he's he's in every press conference, he gets,
he gets his say in things. I mean, he's a
big part of it. He runs the draft meetings all
of that. So he's a big part of it. To me,
I just don't believe that that this locker room has
(46:49):
a ton of guys that are just one all football
all the time. And and you can argue, know based
off of the quote that Rob throughout that okay, should
we you know, I mean like like should we be
all in and all that? I mean, can't we have
(47:09):
other things going on to because that's that seems to
be okay. But what I'm saying is is that I'm
drafting players. I'm looking at players that that that you know,
winning matters, it really really matters to them. And and
you know, one of they just traded away a guy
(47:31):
that that that loves you know, loves to play football.
I don't know if he loves to, you know, to
do everything it takes to be the greatest player, but
right now he he is, and we we've seen that.
You know, you can kind of get away with it
for a few years, but they that's one of the
things that that I you know, I wonder that that
we see people say he loves football, but but I
(47:53):
don't know if you if the guys really do all
the time. And I think that's a that's a huge
thing that they're looking at. When you look at all
these three thousand players that Lester's talking about, you've got
like what fifteen scouts to do it. That's one of
the things that needs to be addressed a lot. You know,
captains on your on your team in college film room, study,
(48:13):
guys that are trying to get an edge, that are
trying to get better all the time, Guys that don't
celebrate because they make a tackle when they're down by
twenty points. You know, make sure winning matters. Because if
winning matters all the time, that it's gonna matter during
the week when they're trying to study, and it's gonna
matter in the offseason when they're trying to get better.
So you know, not just playing for contract, but playing
(48:35):
to win. There's a way to play for both I
really do. I mean, if you play to win and
you play well, you're going to get a contract. And
I and I think that and I'm not saying it's not,
but I think that needs to be the number one
emphasis because these guys, you get them in here, guys
that absolutely love to play football, they'll figure out how to,
you know, to do everything it takes to win that possession,
(48:58):
to win that drive, to win that quarter, to win
that game, and then you can win from there. But
I think the love of the football, it's not just
a cliche. It's something that needs to be addressed even
more because I think you got too many guys in
here that are looking for that next contract and not
necessarily looking for that next opponent that they're going to
be facing. And I think I think it hurts them, honestly.
(49:19):
All Right, we'll do it again tomorrow on Cowboys Storyline
for Chris Beam. I'm Nick Eatman. See tomorrow.
Speaker 1 (49:24):
This has been a production of Dallascowboys dot Com and
