Speaker 1 (00:02):
The following is a production of Dallas Cowboys dot Com
and the Dallas Cowboys Football Club.

Speaker 2 (00:08):
Cowboys.

Speaker 1 (00:11):
This is Cowboys storyline presented by Gillette, the official shave
of the Dallas Cowboys. Here's Nick Eatman.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
What's up? Welcome to Cowboys storyline presented by Gillette. I
am Nick Eatman and the Cowboys. Tough loss on Sunday
in Denver, something that should, I guess be expected. Haven't
won in Denver since nineteen ninety two, haven't beaten the
Broncos at all since nineteen ninety five. Don't play them

(00:45):
a lot. Maybe that's a good thing for the Cowboys
because the success against that team certainly isn't there. Definitely
in Denver, where you know, the crowd was a factor
for it seemed like it for the Cowboys. That had
a lot of pre snap penalties, just a lot of
issues on offense that we just haven't seen this year.

(01:07):
No doubt they're a different team from home and away,
but for sure, playing in Denver, they have a great
home field advantage and it showed in that game. They
get to win forty for twenty four and the Cowboys
are three four and one, one game to go before
the bye week, I guess you call this the midpoint season.

(01:28):
Eight games in nine to go, so right about now,
the Cowboys have a Monday night game against a very
well rested Arizona team that's coming off of bye week.
They've lost five in a row. Don't let that fool you, though,
because those five losses are by combining thirteen points, a
couple of one pointers, two points three here. I mean,

(01:48):
they're close. They're not winning these games, but they're certainly
right there. So I'm sure that they're with a bye
week and looking at the way the Cowboys defense is playing,
I'm sure the offense and from Arizona's excited about getting
to AT and T Stadium this Monday night. So we'll
see how that goes. All right, let's hear from you guys.
Let's start it off with the phone lines, Travis and

(02:10):
San Antonio.

Speaker 3 (02:10):
We'll start us off that cappy Tuesday.

Speaker 2 (02:13):
All right, appreciate it, thanks, just I know.

Speaker 3 (02:16):
We're gonna be quick, so I want to get right
to this. I want to build on Dylan's point yesterday.
He was talking about like this team, the defense not
having any bones to it, and the more and more
I thought about this Nick, it's going to ruffle some
feathers and maybe it'll spark some conversation for you today.
I'm okay if they give up a one or even
two ones, if it means they're finding a guy that

(02:37):
is going to be part of the bones the defense,
that can help you for the last nine games, but
also be somebody you build around for next season. There's
a couple of names out there, but I know we're
not saying names. But I know the only reasons I
say that are you know, people are getting hung up
on the two first round picks, and I've tried to
tell people to in most drafts, there's fifteen first round players.
Right if you're drafting twenty or later, you're drafting the

(02:57):
second round player anyways, And those two Green Bay picks,
if you were to move those two, they're probably if
we're being realistic, I'm probably going to be right now
it's thirty one, but they're probably both going to be
twenty years later. So I just want people to be
open to the fact that we haven't drafted the best
on defense the last four or five years. So if
you go out and get somebody proven, go get someone proven.
I guess my point to be the bones of this defense,

(03:19):
and I just want to see what you got to
have a great one.

Speaker 2 (03:22):
Thanks Travis. I don't hate that. I've said that as well.
You know, whoever, whatever you do, I mean, it's not
a this year thing. It's it's this year, but it's
also you know, next couple of years. I mean, that's
that's that's what you would have to give up if
you're going to part with a first round pick. I mean,
that's the kind of kind of player. And so that

(03:42):
kind of player is going to be part of your
your team for the next few years. He's part of
the core, and and you know that's what you expect
out of your first round pick. But you're right, I mean,
when you look at drafting in the twenties, I mean
the Cowboys, haven't you been super at it. Tyler Smith's
are a good player. I mean they let's not forget that,

(04:04):
but they also have drafted Mazzie Smith and Tyler Goeyiton
the last few years. And and you know that hasn't
necessarily that hasn't worked out yet. I mean, now Tyler
Goyiton's starting for you, but I mean he's got his
issues too. A left tackle I think he's a young
player that will continue to develop. I think he's gonna
be a good player. But you know, you can't say
that about Mazzi. He's not playing he's not playing on

(04:26):
in a position of need, and he's not playing a
lot and and and making an impact. So but yeah,
I mean, I'm I'm totally with you. I don't know
if everyone believes that. I do. I think that that's
a good that's a good plan, but you know, it's
got to be a good fit. It's got to be
somebody that they would want to sign long term. So
not those guys aren't just always sitting there ready to

(04:48):
be traded and then another team just come in and
sign him. So there's there's it's got to work out perfectly.
And I don't think those those situations aren't aren't there
as much as people think they are. I think there's
good players teams want to move, but for whatever the reason,
that player is probably not inter students and in signing
a new deal, or they would have already done them

(05:10):
and they wouldn't really be a guy that you would
be trading anyways, all right. Irene in falls Church, Virginia,
Irene Hey good morning.

Speaker 4 (05:18):
I'm not gonna be emotional about whatever that was. But
two things on offense, so I'm self scouting. If I'm shoddy,
i am abandoning the or I'm not abandoning the rundown
in the red zone. I don't understand. You're at the
one yard line. Why don't you go four times?

Speaker 5 (05:36):
Anyway?

Speaker 4 (05:36):
So on that note, and then the defense, if I'm shoddy,
I don't know what to do because I don't think
he has the ability to get police out of there,
and I do think that is what needs to happen,
among other things. It's not just him, But I'm having
conversations with all my coordinators to see who philosophically likes
to blitz and I'm asking Jerry for permission.

Speaker 3 (05:57):
To do that.

Speaker 4 (05:57):
But on the offensive side, please keep running the ball,
stop with the short passes.

Speaker 2 (06:02):
All right, Yeah, I mean I agree with you. I mean,
what's gonna get Dak Prescott and the MVP talk is
winning games. That that's what's gonna do it. It's not
about the stats. It's not all that stuff. So I
don't know what that is. I don't know why you
want to throw on the ball. Second one try to
throw it up to pickings. I don't I don't understand that.
You know, there's an all Pro sitting there covering him,

(06:23):
but there's not an all pro. And they got good defense,
but there's not like an all pro right there the
defensive line. You get you went from the four to
the one on first down. Try it again, see what happens.
Jontay Williams, you know, who used to play in Denver,
probably feels a certain way about the way that game went.

(06:43):
I mean, he did score twice, but they got cute
down there to me, and throwing the ball is not
considered cute, but it is when you're on the one
yard line and you're and you're running back is averaging
five yards of pop. I bet he can score. I
bet he scores there, take advantage of that interception you
just got and go a touchdown and then you know,
but they didn't. I mean, and you know we've seen it.

(07:07):
They've thrown the ball from the one and they throw
it to Ferguson and it's a touchdown, and no one
says anything about getting cute and all that. It's only
cute when you end up kicking a field goal on
that same drive and you didn't score. But you know,
I just think, hand the ball to Davonte Williams two
or three times in a row and see if they
stop him every time, then we'll let's talk. But I
don't think that's gonna happen. All right, Casey Joe in

(07:28):
Kansas City. What's up?

Speaker 6 (07:30):
Good morning, Nick?

Speaker 7 (07:31):
How are you doing today, sir?

Speaker 2 (07:32):
Thank you?

Speaker 7 (07:33):
Good Hey. The only bright spot I seen yesterday from
the four defense is Bridges.

Speaker 5 (07:40):
Now.

Speaker 7 (07:40):
I know he's green. They said he came from the
Chargers practice squad. That's what they said on another show.
And uh, but he at least is willing to go
after the ball and that's kind of what we need
on defense.

Speaker 8 (07:54):
I mean, he might not.

Speaker 7 (07:55):
Be for this year, but I'd like for him to
keep him around and develop him.

Speaker 2 (08:02):
Thanks for the call. He's young. I mean, he he
gave up some plays. It kind of reminded me of
the Washington game last year in Washington when Josh Butler
had like twelve tackles and he was fighting scrappy, gave
up an eighty seven yard touchdown as well, gave up
some plays. There was a reason why he had twelve tackles.

(08:23):
They were throwing at him. A lot, and you know,
I Bridges kind of the same way. They weren't afraid
of them. I mean he was out of position and
the past was so bad that he got an interception.
I'm you know, he's a young player. He needs to
get better. He's not I don't think he's the answer.
But like like you just said, you said it though,

(08:45):
he needs to develop, can continue to develop. Uh, you know,
maybe there's something there. But but you know, they they
got issues on defense for sure. I mean we know this.
I mean, of course the issues that they're they're they're
worst than the league. So I'm not breaking any news here.
But there's different guys to try. I mean, I mean

(09:05):
obviously with with trayvon z injury and him being out,
this was a guy that was supposed to be there
with with Bland, with Elm. When those three are out
there together, I think that you know that they could
have been a good, good trio, but we haven't really
seen that and definitely haven't seen it playing kind of
a man to man defense. All Right, Daveon and Illinois, what's.

Speaker 9 (09:25):
Going on there? I know we gotta be quick. Hey, uh,
still still coming in. I'm coming to hot But it's
gonna be. It's gonna be a good one. First thing. First,
we got to get over the fact of trying to
get rid of the plus is gonna be here for
the rest of the year. We just got to accept
that it's gonna be. It's what it is. I think
we need to on offense, we need to just try

(09:46):
to abandon the idea of punt. We need to really
just try to go forward a lot. Basically, if it's
fourth and five and under, we gotta go especially when
we're on the road, because we're not really getting anything
from the defense on the road, and we got to
try to cut some dead weight on some of the defense.
We've got to get a lot of guys that really
just is out there that's not really doing it to

(10:07):
help us. So we need to try to move some
of the guys around and just bring some guys that
really want to like win free and stuff like that
that we've seen. Uh, it's trying to make some moves,
get some cups peep out of here and try to
get the same savage thing or we can make a
run at this thing.

Speaker 2 (10:23):
All right, all right, Daniell, I appreciate that no punting.
He says it's probably probably better, you know, analytics to
do that. Keep going, because here's the deal. Pinning the
penning the offense down at the ten yard line. When anger,
anger can get that punt down to ten fair catch. Okay,
does that change anything, because if you're not stopping the run,

(10:44):
they're just gonna move the ball out of it, you
know what I mean. Yeah, you're you're more conservative down there.
But but it's one thing if if you know, if
you can sack the line of scrimmage and they're gonna
bring me those screen passes, you can get off the
field and you you know, get the ball back you know,
brown midfield. But if you're not stopping the run, then
you just gonna they're gonna run it though a little
short pass, another run here, and now it's first down,

(11:06):
and now they're moving out of it. And so whether
they drive at ninety yards or not, at least you
know getting back there. So my point is is I
agree with you fourth and four, fourth and five. You know,
if you if you like the play calls that you have,
and you like the route runners and you know, Ferguson
and all that, I mean, you've got some ways to
pick up the first down. I don't know if I punt,
you know, I don't know if I go for it

(11:27):
every time. But I like what you're thinking because I
do think it probably gives you the best chance to
keep moving the football. All right, let's go to break
real quick on storyline and be right back after this all.

Welcome back to Cowboys storyline. Let's talk some Cowboys football.
They got the Cardinals coming up Monday night. Let's go
back to our phone lines. Blair in Newport News, Virginia. Blair,
what's up, hey, Just.

Speaker 13 (13:31):
Trying to salvage some optimism after this last weekend, and
I'm wondering is a trade. Is a trade really off
the table? And the reason I ask is because, like,
if you don't think the trade can really fix what
you're doing, wouldn't it be better to wait and just
get the picks next year? I realized after ZONEA we

(13:54):
got to buy and then of course overshown maybe coming back,
But will trade be enough to really restore this defense
to credibility moving forward? And of course Arizona is a
big mystery game. You never know what you're gonna get there.
I'll take your comments off their Thanks so much, Nick,
appreciate you.

Speaker 2 (14:13):
All right. I said this earlier this week. I I'm
not I'm not trying to find Charles Haley move okay,
I'm not trying to find that one piece that's going
to take you to the super Bowl. What I'm trying
to find is a player that can give you enough
of an impact that that can get you off the
field on third down. That's that's all I need. I mean,

(14:34):
I need. I need that guy that gives you more
pass rush than you've seen. He's maybe two guys that
can block to this guy. Maybe you need a double team.
I mean, really do they does anyone double team anyone.
I need somebody like that that can make a play,
whether it be a pass rush up maybe he's in
the back end, safety, another corner, somebody that is a

(14:56):
playmaker that that can get you off the field. Because
if I get off the field a couple times, you know,
more than I've seen, then your offense can can do
something with it. So all right, but that's my take. Yeah,
I think a trade can help because because your offense
is really good, you have a really good offense, so

(15:16):
you just need a little help on defense. If your
offense was just average and just so so here and there,
then no, you probably one player is not going to
change things. But if I didn't you got off the
field a couple times, Yeah, I think I can do something,
all right. Brian in Kansas City.

Speaker 9 (15:30):
Good morning, sir, morning.

Speaker 14 (15:32):
You know I was thinking last weekend exactly what you
brought up yesterday, that this reminds me of twenty eighteen.
Pass rush by committee didn't work any better than than
receiver by committee, right right, you know, that's exactly what
I was thinking. I do think though, that we when
if we think we're going to make a move, it

(15:52):
should be for the long term, not just hey, what'll
give us to nine or ten wins this year? Yeah,
and because I think that might drive us to overpay
a little bit, you know. Yeah, And we didn't for
a Mari. We did not overpay for a Mari. We
got about what they should have got.

Speaker 5 (16:10):
You know.

Speaker 14 (16:11):
And I think that we need a pass rusher or
a middle linebacker, meaning long term, And I'm with you,
this has to be somebody we have control over for
a couple of years, so on and so forth. So
just my thoughts on that. Hey, I wanted to ask
you a question about Bebe. I know he was close
to playing last year last week, so I hope that

(16:32):
means he's going to play this week. But any any
update on him, man, that's it for me.

Speaker 2 (16:35):
Thanks, thank you, Bryan. A little early for updates this
week on baby, But you're right he did. I mean
I talked to him and he said he thought there
was a shot he could play against Denver, but you know,
he wanted to The player doesn't always, you know, give
you the best update because they all think they can play,
they all think that they're fine or whatever. But I

(16:57):
think for sure this week was a good opportunity. And
I think what now that we've seen these losses the
Cowboys have had against Carolina and Denver, they're getting whipped
up front. That's a big key that they're not running
the football. I mean, look at look at what you
know wins and losses. Look at what Javonte Williams is
doing when the wins versus the loss. I think that's

(17:17):
the real key part of the of these games. And
and they they've got to get better there. I think
that there's a thought that there's a little bit more
better communication up front when BB's in there, maybe maybe
a little stronger too one way or another. Though, they
got to get better in the middle. And I would
I would think BB could come back this week. Gerald
and port Allen, Louisiana.

Speaker 15 (17:38):
Hey, what how you doing? Good?

Speaker 2 (17:39):
How you doing?

Speaker 15 (17:41):
Oh Man?

Speaker 9 (17:41):
Hanging in there being a Cowboys fan loving.

Speaker 15 (17:45):
Son over real quick with it. As far as like
the defense as a hole in the in the scheme,
do you feel as if they would have played more
in the preseason that we would have seen a lot
of the you know, the holes or the the miss
communication or where they've got it tightened up in the
preseason versus seeing it, you know, in the middle of

(18:05):
the season where they've got that, you think they would
have got that tightened up. And I hang up and listen,
all right, and thank you.

Speaker 2 (18:10):
I appreciate it. I know there's a thought out there
of that. I I I, you know, not to be
argumentative or anything like that. I just I don't ever
believe that, only because everything is so vanilla. Nobody shows
anything anymore. So those guys could have all played. But
I don't. I just don't know that that the your

(18:33):
your teams that you're playing. I can't remember who they
played in the preseason. I mean Baltimore, the Rams, Falcons.
They had their own issues anyways, just stopping them on defense.
But but I just think you're not you know, most
teams aren't playing their starters, and then they're certainly not
going to throw out some of their more exotic plays
and stuff. So I just think you're right. They could

(18:57):
have done. You know, they could have seen the little
bit more of this, They could have played more, they
could have been a little bit more crisp. But what
you're gonna see and how long you're gonna play him,
versus the thought of losing them to a season ending
injury in the preseason game would just be catastrophic. I
just I think the risk award just isn't there for me,

(19:17):
because I don't think you're gonna get as much value
of them just being out there for I mean, think
about the last preseason game was Friday, August twenty second,
and then the next game is September the fourth, So
I mean that's you know, you're still talking like two
weeks pretty much. It was two weeks, so you know,
there's there's a chance that you can get you know,

(19:39):
knock the rust off and then play three games and
then get more rust for the next game. So I
don't know, I'm just not a huge proponent of that
because I just think the risk is just too much there.
All right, let's go to break here one more time

Speaker 2 (21:08):
All right, welcome back to Cowboys storyline presented by Gillette. Tuesday,
October twenty eighth. We got to this is the day
we tape our TV show, and we had to get
those two segments out of the way. Now we can
roll a little bit and I didn't want to didn't
want to have to rush for our next caller here,
Randy text or can I know you got things to say.
Let's make it somewhat quick, but I still want to

(21:29):
hear from you.

Speaker 8 (21:30):
I'll try. My brain hurts on this defense thing, all right,
I just okay, you know, I've never called in in
bad mouth anybody. I'm not one of these people that
want to talk bad about coaches and players because I
can't do what they're doing, so I don't want to
bad amount them. But I almost had to just to
get this conversation out. So one guy will talk bad

(21:52):
about auto. What's a manualato? Is that his name? That
he used to play for us? He's got his own show.

Speaker 2 (21:57):
No, No, he didn't play for other Cowboys. Okay, well
that yeah, he did some stuff with the Cowboys, but
I mean he played in his ten games that he played,
they weren't with the Cowboys.

Speaker 8 (22:07):
Okay, all right, Well I've never really cared for him,
but anyway, I saw a dyl on that he was
a pinpoint in a bunch of plays from this past
game with the defense. Yeah, yeah, I saw that, and
you saw that. Okay, is it the coach or is
it the players, like they the the Broncos literally had

(22:27):
an answer for everything we did. At one point, we
had six players covering four guys and he's still caught
a wide open touchdown in the end zone and it's
so there do you lean toward okay? The players are
just not up to par and smart enough to handle it.
Or is the coach calling bad plays or Slash not

(22:49):
coaching the players to do the correct thing. I just
don't know where to go with this. I don't know
that any of us do, really No.

Speaker 2 (22:57):
I think it's a it's a combination of a lot
of things, and it's not it's not good. I mean,
like you don't have your pass rush. These guys are
the guys that that you that they are going to
war with. I mean, once they traded Micah, they said
they'll be fine with these guys, and these guys are
not fine. And then to make it worse is that
on the back end, I mean, we're about two players

(23:17):
away from Colin Darren Woodson in for to play uh safety.
That's going to really set him back for the for
the Hall of Fame even more because if he comes
out here and plays but that's about where they are
at safety. So you take the lack of players there,
the lack of pass rush here. The linebackers in between
are getting knocked off their ass. I mean, like, I mean, well,

(23:42):
you got me. I'm not gonna go there. But I'm
just saying it's just a bad mix all the way around.
So it looks like bad coaching. And it could be.
I mean, it really could it could be. I'm not one,
though I know what you're referred to. I'm not one
to just say he fire him, fire him, he needs
to lose his job.

Speaker 18 (23:58):
All that.

Speaker 2 (23:58):
I don't know. But that's easy, the dude say, because
you don't have to be accountable because you're not here.
I mean, and that's not just him, that's anybody. It's
real easy to say, fire this guy, fire that guy. Yeah,
you change it for who. I mean, this is my
Ricky Waters statement here for who?

Speaker 18 (24:15):
For what?

Speaker 2 (24:15):
Who's coming in here and do and and and all?
This guy's this guy's better. You know this guy.

Speaker 8 (24:22):
And I'm really wanting all the fans to ease up
on the overshown thing. Man, this guy hadn't played football.

Speaker 14 (24:27):
In a year.

Speaker 8 (24:28):
It's gonna take him four games to get in the group.
So he's not gonna be the savior. H Yeah, he'll
be a good addition, but he's not gonna come in
immediately and make that big of an impact. Everybody needs
to ease up. And actually, yesterday Jesse said, and I
almost agree with him, if we drop one or two
more games before he eats scheduled to come back, it

(24:50):
might be best just to not let him come back
and just get one percent fully healthy for next year
and come in fresh next year and not risk hurting
him again. But that's about all I gotta say. I'm
just it's just a frustrating, defensive situation, and I hate
that we may waste away a really good offense and
waste away a year with Pekins if we're not able

(25:10):
to keep him. And they I want them to make
a move, but I don't have the answers to tell you.
I don't know who to get what to get. You know,
it's it's it's crazy. I think this is just what.

Speaker 3 (25:22):
We got to deal with.

Speaker 8 (25:23):
I think this is I think this is our season
and we just all need to accept that.

Speaker 2 (25:27):
You know, all right, Randy, I mean and it could
be I mean, it's just this is uh I've said
it several times. I mean the Cowboy. Being a Cowboy
fan is like a you know, it's one of those
six flags roller coasters, and this is this year more
than ever because it's up and it's down, and it
looks it looks good here, looks like it's going to
be over then and then and then it goes backwards

(25:49):
and then it goes around and you know, you lost
your cap and it fell down, and you know. But
I mean it's that kind of roller coaster that that's
what kind of season this is. Uh, they're just they're
just good on offense and really bad on defense, and
and the mixture is gonna be probably gonna put you.

(26:11):
I mean they're probably headed for eight eight and one.
The back half of the schedule looks tougher, looks tougher,
but I mean, I don't I don't know. I mean,
there's none of these games that you couldn't go win.
Kansas City and the in Detroit are both playing better,
way better. I mean, they look pretty elite, so those
are gonna be tough ones. But it doesn't matter. I

(26:34):
mean a quarter I mean, you're putting quarterbacks that are
just average quarterbacks and making them look like they're ready
to go in the Hall of Fame. So all right,
I'll say this about the overshown thing, though, I couldn't
disagree more with that. I mean, if he's not healthy,
then don't he shouldn't be playing at all. It doesn't
matter if you're undefeated or winless or whatever. If he's

(26:56):
not ready to go, then then don't put him out there.
If he's rehabbed, ready to play, Uh, play, I mean
football players play, I mean I don't know, that's what
they do, right, That's the job of a football player
is to go play football. So if he's not ready
and you're like, well, I don't want to risk more injury,
well then just don't ever play him then, you know.
I mean, but I think he's ready to go, and

(27:17):
I want him to go play and and and get better.
He's still a young player that hadn't played a lot
of football. Play some more football, get better, figure out
the right spot to use him, when to blitz him,
when to play him at linebacker, and all that stuff.
Use these games for for you know. I mean, that's
what's funny. I hope whoever says that is not saying

(27:38):
that they need to play in the preseason. Okay, you
got people that are saying, why don't they play in
the preseason, And then if there's anyone that's saying, I
would just shut him down. What are we talking about here?
All right? Josh in Chicago?

Speaker 19 (27:50):
Hey, Nick, how's it going good?

Speaker 2 (27:52):
How are you?

Speaker 18 (27:53):
Well?

Speaker 8 (27:53):
You know, I could be better?

Speaker 19 (27:55):
I think, you know, looking at this optimistically, you had
a lot of teams that low in front of you
in the playoff spots, right, that would have been really
nice to get a win, but at least you didn't
kind of lose ground against.

Speaker 2 (28:06):
Them, right A definitely won the battle if there was
like an NFC versus AFC challenge or something like that,
which they call the Pro Bowl.

Speaker 19 (28:16):
But anyway, yeah, they count it really had had their.

Speaker 2 (28:20):
Day, even last night too, or Monday night whatever that was.

Speaker 19 (28:23):
Yeah, it is last Yeah, I'm I'm counting on I'm
at I think they won seven of the of the
game of the matchups and I think they went like
seven to one. It looks like yeah, so, I mean,
I mean, just insane, but I think, uh, you know,
I called during the off season, I'm kind of with
you on the trade. If it's the right person for
the right price. I'm doing it because I think brought
us brought up a good point yeh yesterday on the

(28:45):
break of you kind of get a jump start to
next season, too, right, So if it's the right person
and you get a long term deal done, or if
it's somebody who's got years in their contract, then hey,
why not do it. I brought up during the kind
of jokingly during the off season about hey, individuals still
out there, and I'm looking, you know, at the list
of free agents who are still out there, and I

(29:06):
think when you talk when Brian Schottenheimer talks about a
team that competes, there's a lot of cornerbacks, safeties and
linebackers who are still out there as free agents. And
I kind of wonder if they should bring some of
these guys in they will at least kick the tires around,
let them practice, let them have a tryout, and see
if any of them might be give you more than
what you're getting right now, because they a competition, you know,

(29:27):
creates better players hopefully, right, Like that's the goal. So
I kind of look at the list of you know,
the linebacker, safeties and cornerbacks that are out there, and
it's like, hey, why not bring some of these guys
in and give them an opportunity and see what they
have and if they have anything left in the tank.
But that's kind of my thought. I'll leave the tower.

Speaker 2 (29:42):
Yeah, I mean, you know, you're kicking the tires again
on some of those guys that were here. You know,
there's always a question of why white guys are available.
I mean, there's a there's a reason why, and then
how long is it going to take them to be
kind of up to speed. I just don't believe there's

(30:03):
anybody that's sitting on the street that can that can
help really any team. I don't think. I don't know,
I could. I could be wrong, but it's just hard
to think these guys are gonna get get here, get
ready to play and and and help you that much
when none of the other thirty one teams wanted them

(30:24):
to even be on their practice squad. I mean that's
the thing too, Like practice now. Part of it too,
is that these guys are like, I'm not doing it
for this price. I'm not gonna do it just to
do it. I'm not gonna do it to just be
on the practice squad. Fine, I get it. But that
doesn't also bode well for guys that are gonna come
right right in off the street and help you. We've

(30:44):
seen certain times where that's happened, you know, every now
and again. A few years ago, the Cowboys brought in
remember t Y Hilton at receiver. He'd been sitting there
all year. I think he was just coaching his little
his son's little league team, or you know, pee wee football,
and then when that season was over, he was like,
all right, I'm ready to play. And now he's talking

(31:06):
about a really good player. I mean, there are rare cases.
I'm sure there's somebody out there that that could help.
But I think that the best way to do is
get a guy that's playing on a team and and
and you know, at least somebody that's practicing every game
every week. All right, Jr? In Avondel, Arizona.

Speaker 18 (31:26):
More than that, How you doing are you? I've been
under the weather. I haven't heard the show in a
couple of days, so I'll probably talking about the stuff.
A lot of stuff y'all he talked about.

Speaker 2 (31:37):
So sorry, what do you got?

Speaker 18 (31:39):
I just I the best team doesn't always win, but
they did this weekend. You know, the Roncos. If you
got realize RONC is like a team and they're really
well coached team. I don't know if you heard Sean
Payton talking to the sideline reporter during the game, but
he talks about targeting bridges and targeting their second secondary

(32:00):
because we have a bunch of people out you know,
my hat tip my hat to him. He's a great coach.
But far as the defense goes it, you know, when
when you see players that just the fundamentals out there,
and it's the simple stuff that I coached for a
quite a while and stuff you teach guys in high

(32:22):
school and in the league that these guys aren't doing
a professionals, and you got to wonder the want has
to be there. I think coach went to told me tackling
is eighty percent wants. You gotta want to tackle. And
it's like I'm always talking about em. He's just not
very good as a football player. And there's not really
an There's not really an answer.

Speaker 17 (32:42):
But I do believe that coaches coaching.

Speaker 18 (32:44):
Players play and at some point the players got to play.
That is something to playing. So that's why I'd like
to see that. You know, I don't want to lose
their job or anything, but shake something up. Something's got
to change to get something out of the players that
they're not getting. And that's what I think. And that's
all I got, and I'll such, I'll go and go Cowboys.

Speaker 2 (33:06):
All right. Well, yeah, you know, Schottenheimer didn't say what
it would be, but he he he promised. He's like, oh,
you're gonna see some changes. You may not see it
all this week, but after you know, by week coming up,
you're going to see some changes for sure. The scary
part of that is is because if because if there's

(33:27):
any part of you that says, good, good man, that's good.
I can't wait to see that. You know that Vegas game,
we got to get through this, get this win, and
the Vegas is gonna be some changes. If you're excited
about that at all, just know that you're facing an
Arizona team that's lost five straight games, mostly by two
or three points, if not one point, and they're coming

(33:49):
off of buy so I bet they're they're gonna bring
some changes, maybe at quarterback. So just know that that's
what you have going up this week against Arizona. But uh, yeah,
I mean, I don't know. I don't know what these
changes could be or will be. But yeah, don't wait
that long. I mean, I try to fix something here.

(34:11):
You got an extra day for Monday night football. Try
to try to make a change, do something. I get
it that you know the bye week could be the
time to do some of that. But I'm all, I'm
all for it. I'm not. I'm not looking at next year.
I don't think this team's looking at next year. I
know the fans are, but I don't think anyone's looking
at next year. They're looking at how to figure out

(34:31):
a way to win this game, get some things altered,
try to beat the Raiders, and knowing after that it
gets really tough schedule wise, and so they're going to
have to be as good as they can possibly be.
All right, Michael and Bowling Green, Kentucky.

Speaker 20 (34:48):
Well, I could not call yesterday. I had to just listen.
I couldn't speak anything yesterday because it would have been banned.

Speaker 2 (34:55):
All right, Well, I appreciate that, and thank thanks for
the listen.

Speaker 20 (35:00):
Yeah, I listened to the whole show, but I was like, nah,
I can't call. Uh, Phoebe's coming back. That's good. But
I believe if we don't if two things don't happen,
that our season is gonna end with five or six wins.
And I think those two things are overshown. Demo has

(35:24):
got to come back with just a vengeance. And I
believe we have to get a new body in here
or pass rushing somebody who's gonna make a difference. I
just I think we have both of those things have
to happen that. I mean, I'm the secondary. I'm sure

(35:46):
it's just you know that, injuries and everything.

Speaker 18 (35:49):
But.

Speaker 20 (35:51):
I think if that happens, then we we're gonna win
some games. I'm not looking the next year. You said,
a lot of fans are. I'm still on this year.
It's the off season is too long to give to
give up after you know, not even half one.

Speaker 2 (36:08):
No, I mean, you're right, there's nine games left. Thanks
for the call, Michael, you.

Speaker 20 (36:12):
Know, yeah, thank you.

Speaker 2 (36:14):
The nine nine games left. You've got five of them
at home, and you got five of them at home.
You're averaging over forty points a game at home. I'm
not saying that that's gonna continue, but even if you
slip a little bit, you should be okay there. This team,

(36:35):
this team plays well at home this year at least
what we've seen, and you know, you've got some you've
got some games that you can you can do something
with and any and even on those road games, I'm
looking at the schedule, Raiders, you know, on the road,
first time to ever play in Vegas, you should have
a lot of fans there. You should be able. There
should be a place where you go there and play well.

(36:56):
Coming off of by Lions is gonna be tough on
a Thursday night after the Thanksgiving That's gonna be a
tough game for sure. And then you know at at Washington,
a place where they've won before and that's Christmas Day.
We'll see what happens there and not the Giants. So
you know, I mean winnable road games for sure, maybe not,

(37:17):
they're all winnable. Detroit's gonna be the tough game that
there's no doubt. Uh, But then you know, also at home.
My point is is that there's there's some you know,
there's no reason to be looking at next year. There's
the reason to kind of fix a few things. Uh,
the schedule. Still, you know, you still got some opportunities
to to win some games, but you're gonna have to
you're gonna have to win some of these that that
you you guys have probably put the W in the

(37:38):
L and all they're gonna win this. They're gonna have
to get some of those l's. They're gonna have to
flip those around because I you know, the most optimistic
Cowboy fan didn't have an L at Carolina probably uh
so probably even Chicago either. So they they they've got
to get some of these and they have it yet.
That's one of the big things. They have to beat
some teams that that you're expecting them to beat. All right,

(38:01):
Casey in la Hey.

Speaker 21 (38:04):
Nick, how's it going good? Good transitioning from despondent to
rationalization and hope comes tomorrow. So at least we're going
in the right direction. I feel like Sunday just a
missed opportunity on that opening drive. I know we needed seven,
but keep Hammer and Javonte right there. Dude, you do that,

(38:25):
You stoke him out, you stake the team out, you
set that physical edge, you know, and it just gets
everybody hype. Being the former Bronco there, I think it's
sets a different tone too cute down there. I'm not
sure it mattered for the whole game. But at least
you're saying we're physical and we're gonna take it to you.
So hate when they get cute down there, and I

(38:50):
agree with you, do we gotta make We got to
make moves for this season. It's not a guarantee that
this offense comes back and it just lights out next year.
Do what we can to improve the team, and just
got got to get some pressure on the quarterback.

Speaker 20 (39:04):
Man.

Speaker 21 (39:04):
We're making these guys look like all pros. Look what
Caleb's done since that game against US, So it can
be fixed, but takes action, so hopefully we get there.

Speaker 2 (39:15):
You're exactly right, Thank you so much. You should never
have lost to Bryce Young, Caleb Williams, Russell Wilson. I mean,
Jordan Love had a great game. I mean Justin Fields
didn't play that great. It's okay, obviously bo Nick's played great. Yeah,

(39:39):
you know, Patrick Mahomes is sitting there in a few
weeks heared goff Justin Herbert after that, So yeah, I
mean there's there's some quarterbacks that that are are considered
really good that you're gonna have to go up against.
So there's no doubt about it. They got to try
to fix all that. Let's go back to our phone
line here, Corey and Buckeye Arizona. Corey. What's up hey, Nick?

Speaker 6 (40:02):
Uh hey, yeah, thanks for having me on. I'll try
to make this as quick as I can. I'm not
a normal caller, but more of an example followed up
by maybe some thoughts or question for you. Ah man,
it's probably the first year, y'all, y'all started this, this
great show, but it's it's been a long long time.

Speaker 2 (40:22):
I was trying to give it the here we go, Well,
you definitely didn't get that, all right, what do you got?

Speaker 6 (40:30):
There we go? So kind of an example is we've
all seen that that defender that dB that it's third
down and they celebrate because they made them punt. Right,
a pass was thrown to their defender that they were
guarding and and uh, they forced a punt and he's celebrating.
And it's a little embarrassing because it's like, what are
you celebrating for. The receiver dropped the pass, your defender

(40:51):
was wide open. The quarterback through a terrible ball, right,
And it's that's kind of our defense I feel like,
is we don't necessarily just make plays and force them
to punt. It's more we need a lot of help
from that offense to shoot themselves in the foot. And
I think in general it's a little I feel like

(41:12):
fans are waiting to see what direction the Jones are
going to go with any change that's going to going
to come up, right? Are they going to just lean
on returning players coming back from injury and just hope
that the draft is going to eventually propel us this
defense into what it needs to be, which would be
a long wait because we have personnel on the defense

(41:35):
right now that we're brought here to play in Quinn's defense,
and so to see that that turnover to Fluce's defense
would take some time. Or is it going to be, hey,
let's make a splash or trade and let's try to
get some some help in now to com you know,
to compliment the prolific offense that we can be. So

(41:56):
that's just my thoughts and what I feel like a
lot of the fans are waiting to see what direct
and the Jones.

Speaker 15 (42:00):
Are going to go.

Speaker 2 (42:01):
Yeah, I think we all are. Thanks for the call, Corey,
And you know you mentioned about defensive players on this
team celebrating after you know, a pass deflection or whatever.
That that's kind of football, right, that's everybody means to
every every league, every level, high school. Everyone's doing the
seat belt on defense. It doesn't matter what the score is.

(42:21):
It doesn't matter if the past, you know, hit a cheerleader.
It didn't matter if if the past wasn't caught. Everyone's
making some great play. Cool and you know, and it
is embarrassing, and it also kind of shows that you
don't really care. That's what I look at. I look
at when you when you're celebrating some play when you're
down by seventeen points, twenty one points. It kind of

(42:41):
shows exactly what matters to you, and that's your stats
and how you're doing and how you're playing and all
that not not so much. You know, who's what the
score is or stuff like that. Believe me. And it's
happened forever. I remember antonio'briant catching a touchdown in the
Meadowlands down thirty seven to nothing, caught a touchdown, slammed
it over the goalpost, so that score finished thirty seven

(43:04):
to seven. You know, he got his touchdown. I mean,
you know, it's nothing new, it's the way it is.
And yeah, it's what it is? Rick and Saint Charles Missouri?
What's that?

Speaker 14 (43:16):
Rick?

Speaker 18 (43:17):
Now? Much?

Speaker 5 (43:17):
How are things going today?

Speaker 2 (43:18):
Good?

Speaker 5 (43:19):
Are you good? I don't think you can fix this defense.
It is what it is. I thought about a month
or so. I think I called in and said something then.
But I think there's a mismatch and talent and I

(43:40):
don't know if it's style or coaching or whatever, but
that's where it is. And I don't see how you
can fix that at the trade deadline. There's just too
much it needs to happen. Probably going to need at
least one draft, maybe more than one, to fix what's
going on. And I don't know that many people expected
the defense to be much better than what it is

(44:02):
going into the season, or a preseason rather or a
training camp. And then you take Mike out of the picture,
and you know, how's it going to be the same
or any better. It's just not, you know. And I've
watched him some and I don't I don't lament it anymore,
but I just see him play for Green Bay and
they're a very talented team on defense, so he's just

(44:25):
eating it up, you know, And it's just like I
expected him to do. Ye, So and I don't think
me personally, I don't look forward or back anymore. We
are where we are if you really analyze it, and
I will for ten seconds that the number of games
that are left, they have to win most of them,
are not nearly all of them to get into playoffs,

(44:46):
and so I don't see that being possible. I like
the process. I like to watch them build a team
and that kind of thing, and that's the way I'm
going to focus on it. And then after the Sea
reason's over, count up the wins and losses and see
if they're qualifying and then go from there. So that's
pretty much it, just a little rant commentary. I like,

(45:09):
I like watching football, and I'm gonna watch it. I'm
disappointed in how the season's turning out, but really it's
not that outrageous. It could have gone either way at
the beginning of the season. So hopefully they'll get a
couple of wins. I'm a little worried about the Cardinals
on Monday, but hopefully they'll get another win.

Speaker 2 (45:25):
All right, thanks, thank you, all right, appreciate that. Yeah,
good stuff. And they are going to have to They're
gonna have to win more games than they lose for
without a doubt down the stretch, we know that uh
five and four in the final nine games is going
to put them into you know, eight, eight and one.
That's probably that's not gonna get it done. So they're
gonna have to even be better than that. Let's go

(45:45):
to break one more time on story that I'd be
right back.

It's a Cowboys Storyline presented by Gillette, the official shave
of the Dallas Cowboys.

Speaker 2 (47:05):
All right back here on Cowboys Storyline here to wrap
this thing up. And man, the Cowboys need to get
a big win Monday night against Arizona. We all know that.
And that's kind of the way this this season has
gone a lot of seasons here in the last few
years of the up down, back forth, and and you know,
the Cowboys have been really good at home and that's

(47:26):
where where they're going back to. Now they're gonna face
an Arizona team that has also been pretty good here
at at AT and T Stadium. And and their quarterback
issues are interesting. I mean they you know, they've they've
lost five straight games and Kyler Murray's had a foot injury.
He supposed to be eligible to come back. I don't
think it's a slam dunk that he will be back

(47:46):
for this game. Jacobe Brissett's played pretty pretty well. They
have won game, so they've had close games. Now Kyler Murray, though,
is has done He's I think he's undefeated at AT
and T Stadium. I know he's won a couple of
games with the Cardinals, but he was his legendary quarterback.
And most these guys were in high school, but Kyler
Murray was pretty legendary with Allen High School and they

(48:09):
won all these games. They won a lot at AT
and T stadums, but very familiar with this place. We'll
see what happens on Monday night. Like I said, Arizona's
lost five straight games, all of them by combined thirteen points.
So they're very very close in these games. They're coming

(48:30):
to go into it. We'll see how they are. I
know there's a lot of injuries that a lot of
people want to say, hey wait wait till next week
coming back from the Raiders, but they got to get

(48:51):
one call away from getting Darren Woodson back here. But
we'll see. Been a fun show. Love to hear from
you guys. Appreciate all the calls. And we'll see if
we can get this thing turned around. It should be
a lot of fun. We'll see what happens next week
when the Cowboys take on the Arizona Cardinals on Monday
Night Football. We'll talk to you next time.
