Speaker 4 (00:19):
Here's Nick Eatman.
Speaker 1 (00:25):
Good morning, Welcome to Cowboys Storyline presented by Gillette. I'm
Nick Eatman. It's Thursday, November the twentieth. Let's get this
show on the roads. Get it started. Cowboys Eagles Week.
It's a short week, but it's all right. Let's good
after it. Philadelphia winning every game by touchdown or less.
(00:46):
They have eight wins this year, eight and two. Seven
of their eight wins are by a touchdown or less.
The Giants. They defeated the Giants by like seventeen points
foot but everything else has been close, including the Week
one against the Cowboys. Give them credit. They're they seem beatable.
But but it's it's a lot harder than it looks apparently.
(01:07):
You know, they're a weird team to figure out their
their offenses is near the bottom of the league. Their defense,
I'm like, okay, well their defense is gonna be rate,
you know, top five. Now they're they're like seventeenth, eighteenth.
That they're like, you know, points allowed that they're maybe
top ten, but where they're where they're number one is
(01:28):
is is giveaways. They don't they don't give the ball away.
I mean at all four turnovers this year, so, I mean,
I don't know if the Cowboys have had a four
to one game, maybe three, but but for for a
season's pretty pretty great. One interception, three fumbles, so and
you know they get the ball every now and again.
(01:48):
They have like ten takeaways, but man, they are protective
of the football. They keep it and they go and
they do just enough to win. So it'll be a
fun game, obviously, Cowboys coming off with a really really
big win, an emotional win that now, I mean that's
been the narrative all year long. You can beat these teams?
Can you beat these teams? Well we're about to find out.
All right, let's get it started. On those calls. Danny Henderson, Nevada,
(02:12):
which is a first time caller, How you doing.
Speaker 5 (02:18):
I'm doing great. I want to say thanks for coming
over to the sideline and meeting me and my family
at the game the other night. That was really special
for us.
Speaker 1 (02:27):
It was awesome.
Speaker 6 (02:29):
Yeah, yeah, going.
Speaker 5 (02:32):
Back to that game, just real quick. I know we're
onto a Philly, but I want to give a shout
out to Hunter Limpke. I thought he played a really
good game and was really determined. I think he ended
up with like forty yards of total offense. And again
shout out to Shaddy for the play calling. I don't
think that was on the Raiders defensive coordinator's BINGO card there.
(02:54):
And I do think the way he's calling things, I'm
really happy with with Shady as a coach and as a.
Speaker 6 (03:02):
Play caller.
Speaker 5 (03:05):
Defensively, I'm really excited now. I can't believe I'm saying that.
A few weeks ago I was I was burying my
head in the sand. But the players we got back,
plus the players we traded for, I think they like
they did in the Raider game. You know, they gave
up a few chunk plays and then when they got
to the red zone, they shut it down and made
(03:27):
them kick field goals. And even when they got the
turnover on us, they went backwards and kicked the field goals.
So if our defense can do that, our future is
bright with the offense we have, and I just think
we get an edge rusher in the draft or some
island free agency. This defense can really be good in
(03:48):
a hurry.
Speaker 1 (03:49):
Yeah, totally totally agreed. Yeah, all right, Well Danny was
great to meet you and your family, and yeah, he
had had a great spot there behind the bench in
pre game. I think his tickets, he said, we're not
too far from that up in the stands. But got
to see him in pre game and chatted with him
a little bit, and you know, it was it was, Uh,
(04:13):
he's right about the defense. The defense. You know, that's
what's what I've been asking for for a while. You know,
I just need some stops. I don't you don't have
to score, you don't have to you know, sacks and
turnovers and defensive touchdowns, all that's gravy, okay, but I
just need need a few stops here. And then they
did they they they did it. Now that was against
(04:34):
the Raiders. The Raiders are not good at all. They're
not They're not a good team. So let's let's see
some stops against against good teams. Couldn't stop the Broncos,
you know, and and and their their offense was struggling
going into that game and has struggled afterwards too. But
you know, they but they look great against the Cowboys,
(04:56):
you know, and there's been other teams like that this
year too, so let's feel another one.
Speaker 6 (05:00):
Now.
Speaker 1 (05:00):
Their offense hasn't looked that great. What's wrong in Philly?
What's going on? Well, let's see what happens, you know,
against against the Cowboys. All right, Anthony and Miami.
Speaker 7 (05:10):
Make the quick. What's up, my guy?
Speaker 1 (05:12):
How you doing?
Speaker 7 (05:13):
I'm doing pretty good. I hope he gave me on
the road man, from the head up there on that end,
we got some of the callers, some of your callers,
give me give me one second? Why god man, ay,
I'm all that within an hour from them. So I
had to all let them to win and pick it
up and take a can you know what I'm saying.
To win and pick it up. You know what I'm saying. So,
(05:34):
in the words of my one of my favorite new restlers,
l A. Knight, Baby, let me talk to you. Yeah,
so let's talk about these Eagles, man, and what's going
on is gunet We got the face so I heard
you doing doing titles and show titles possibly, so let
me give it to you role like you're supposed to
(05:55):
be given. It's simple. You got two titles and this
how this game saiting this out of this gauntlet. We
gotta go if you want to get to this tenth
section one which I predicted, and you're gonna make that
seventh spot if you get there. So it starts with Philly.
So two titles you may use on how we need
to do and all of this mess we got right now,
no excuses. First one, win the game by any means necessary.
(06:22):
The second one, how bad do you want it? It's simple, man.
So here's my score. You know, I've been using some
of my old Cowboys. I use my two favorites last
week thirty three twenty two door set, and in it,
I'm going back with mister Dorset because you gave me luck.
And the second is to be thirty three Cowboys, and
(06:42):
we're going with Timmy Newsom thirty for them for them,
sigels a Nick. That's all I got to say.
Speaker 6 (06:48):
My ain't.
Speaker 1 (06:51):
Why Anthony fired up this morning. I like it all right,
you and I said this yesterday about you know, I'm
just I'm just trying something here. We'll see. You know,
it's been two days. I've I've used some of the
titles or I use the words by some of the
(07:13):
callers to create my title. You know, I don't use
AI uh for that unlike others. But you know, I
try to create my own and and so but I
but I'm using you guys. You guys are the are
the my version of AI. But it's up to it's
up for debate. You know, he can't just be throwing
out stuff. You know, it's got to get voted on
by me on the fly. I like some of these.
(07:36):
We'll see how it goes. You want to go back
to the first caller, Danny and Henderson Nevada said something
about Hunter Lipke and and I didn't. I kind of
glossed over that when I was talking about his call.
But but yeah, Lipkey. A couple of times this year
he's made a play where you know, should be two, three,
four yards and he makes like nine or ten, gets
(07:57):
the first down or gets close. He didn't get a
first down in that Raiders game, but that was a
dump off to him. He did the work, he did
extra efford, he did a spend, he dove, he got it,
made it fourth and one, and then they went for it.
You know that he changed That was a four point play,
you know, getting four yards turned into four points because
they didn't kick a field goal, they went for it,
(08:17):
they got the touchdown. So you know, it's those type
of plays, and he's doing that quite often where you
think maybe he needs to be out there a little
bit more. I know, you guys love him, but he is.
You know, it's that time of year where I give him.
You know, I gave him the nickname. No one else
has called him that, but I give it to him.
I call him Thanksgiving. And we're getting to that point
(08:38):
because he is. He's like you're played at Thanksgiving. You know, yeah, Okay,
put the turkey here. But you know what, m yeah, maroon,
let's do this. Oh what if we put this on there?
That's what they do to him. A little bit of
tied end, a little bit of full back, a lot
of special teams, a little bit of running back. You
could probably pun it if you need him to. All right,
let's go to Brian in Kansas City.
Speaker 8 (08:59):
Good morning.
Speaker 6 (09:01):
I'm doing pretty good man.
Speaker 7 (09:03):
You know, I was thinking the I.
Speaker 8 (09:06):
For a couple of years, people have said, what's the identity?
What's the identity on this offense? What you just said
about Lipke, you could say about Williams. You could say
about Pickens. They're all fighting tooth and nail and just
pushing for that extra or whatever a couple of yards,
(09:30):
you know, and maybe that's the identity of our offense
is just you know, that that scratching, fighting, fighting mentality,
pushing forward like you know, yeah, Pickens looks like nobody
like he's offended if somebody tries to tackle him, you know.
Speaker 4 (09:47):
Yeah, just a thought.
Speaker 8 (09:49):
He and I have a my nickname for Big ninety two.
It's an aviation term that I learned in the Navy,
but I'm.
Speaker 7 (09:57):
Calling him Max Q.
Speaker 8 (10:01):
Because man, that is what we got in him.
Speaker 1 (10:03):
Yeah, yeah, Well, hopefully he'll he'll keep that going. You know.
Obviously he hasn't been as consistent as you wanted, you know,
as you would want him to be. The Jets obviously,
you know, it felt like they could part ways with them,
and they did, and so you know, there's a reason
why he's had one sack probably in eight games. So
what is that? What? What? And that's what the Cowboys
(10:23):
have to you know, figure out and and unleash him
to play at his max like you said, So that
that's what if the Cowboys are getting that that type
of guy then then a first and a second round
pick is a steal. It would be I mean, that's
hard to say, but but it would be if if
you can get that type of player to play like
(10:46):
that and play and make the other guys around him
suddenly better than than what they were. All right, Irene, next.
Speaker 9 (10:53):
Morning, Good morning, How are you good?
Speaker 1 (10:55):
How are you doing well?
Speaker 9 (10:57):
I just watched the Sounds of the Sideline shuts up
Speam and Alex Lilly. My favorite thing in there. Well,
there's a lot of great stuff, but my favorite thing
coaching wise, I guess our player coach, Queen Williams coaching
up Azaraku. I love that. I love that man. He's
impacting already, so very cool. I have a couple of
questions from Joseph and Lincoln Park, New Jersey, who you
(11:20):
met last week on our space, will be doing one tonight.
He wanted to know, of all the coaches you've been around,
who you've had the best rapport with.
Speaker 6 (11:33):
Okay, I think he would.
Speaker 9 (11:35):
He would go with head coach, I think, But that's.
Speaker 6 (11:36):
Cool, that's awesome.
Speaker 1 (11:37):
Should be I'll answer that off the air, Yeah, okay,
get with them, okay.
Speaker 9 (11:43):
And then his other question was if Ryan f LLINOI
might get more involved in kickoff and punt returns, and
then my score prediction. I'm going to reverse our first
game with the Eagles twenty seven to twenty four Cowboy.
All right, bye.
Speaker 1 (12:01):
It was twenty four to twenty Cowboys, wasn't It doesn't matter.
She's speaking to win favorite best report from a head coach. Well,
it wasn't Chan Gaily. I was here for one year
with Chan Dave Campo probably that was maybe one of
(12:24):
part of the problem. But I mean camps was one
of us. You know, I really really like him as
a person. He's good, I mean he was obviously as
a head coach, was tough. It was an uphill battle
and he wasn't one that anybody really could win. You
don't have a quarterback. You don't have any money, so
you don't have that. If you don't have any money
for the salary cap and you don't have any a
(12:44):
quarterback not gonna win. I didn't have a you know,
I mean Bill, it was. I had a few run
ends with him a little bit. He knew my name,
which isn't a which wasn't a good thing. You know,
it turned out to not be a good thing. But
I actually, you know, over the years I've had you know,
got a chance to do some interviews with him, and
I mean absolutely fascinating. He was my favorite coach ever,
(13:08):
and so yeah, I mean I probably you know, be him.
I mean Jason Garrett though every now and again would
have you know, would have some some good conversations with him,
didn't really have much with McCarthy. I really like Shoddy,
but you haven't had a lot of those relationships yet.
I mean, it probably could be him, you know, over time.
But uh, there's so much respect that I had for
(13:29):
Parcels and just you know, I just think he was amazing,
just because the details he would have his press conference
were just must must watch. But if you're asking me
about any coach, uh, you know, assistant, I mean Joe d.
Kamelis by far, I mean, that's that's my that's my guy.
I didn't really want to text him about the South
Carolina game this last week, but uh, I still keep
(13:50):
in contact with him for sure, all right, Sergeant Sue
and fort Worth is next.
Speaker 10 (13:55):
EDI's everybody was going on, Nick, are you good?
Speaker 4 (13:58):
Brother?
Speaker 6 (13:58):
Good? Hey?
Speaker 10 (14:00):
So I was just thinking about this game, man, you know,
I know it's gonna be kind of tough to run
on this team. You know, they got like their big
guys up in the middle. I feel like this is
a game where offensively you really have to utilize pre
snap motion, you know, to get the mismatches. You know,
have CDs in motion over maybe into the slot, you know,
have GP motion. I think this is a game where Turpin,
(14:22):
who has been relatively quiet, way quieter than I thought
he was gonna be, unfortunately. But I think this is
a game where Turpin can you know, do some of
those end rounds or get some of those quick screens,
kind of those like quote unquote extension of the run
game type plays. I think if he doesn't really show
up this week, then maybe he's not even like the
gadget guy that we thought he was, you know what
I mean.
Speaker 11 (14:40):
But but I do have a lot of.
Speaker 10 (14:42):
Faith in this offense. Man, I think it's gonna be really,
it's gonna be a great The superstars got to show up. Defensively,
I think that you got a spy hurts obviously we
get we do a better job of that this time around.
And for me, man, I'm blitzing and I'm and I'm
playing a lot of Man, I'm forcing Hurts to make
those tight windows throws that he doesn't really want to make.
I'm definitely doing that if I'm the DC. That's what
(15:03):
I'm trying to focus on, you know, and a lot
of interior pressure, you know, hit him where it hurts,
you know what I mean. So I think Dallas, you're
gonna win twenty seven twenty four, and thanks for taking
my car. But I'll listen to off.
Speaker 1 (15:13):
There, all right, thank you. Yeah. I mean it's always
it's always tough with them to blitz, just because if
you don't, if you don't get home and you don't
get him down, then when he when he breaks, you know,
free of the line, and then he's got a lot
of room. That's what happened a lot in the in
that game when they did start blitzing him a little
(15:36):
bit more in the second half, with different blitzes, things
that he wasn't used to seeing. I think Bland came
off the edge. I think Diggs came off the edge
and it rattled him a little bit. They weren't the same,
so you know, they made some adjustments, but it wasn't enough. Obviously.
I thought they did a decent job against Barkley. Again,
it's so hard to talk about that that game because
(15:56):
you know, it's been eleven weeks and feels like a
long eleven weeks too, like you know, that's three months
pretty much. But it's it's a lot, I mean, a
lot of has happened, a lot hasn't happened, a few
changes on defense. I mean, I'm sure that they're a
different team now too, so everything's just kind of different.
(16:17):
You can go off the of that that game if
you want to, but I just feel like this is
one that could just take on a life of its own,
like most of them do. All right, our next caller,
We've got Hector and el Paso. Hector, Yes, sir.
Speaker 12 (16:30):
How are you doing to date?
Speaker 13 (16:31):
Man?
Speaker 1 (16:31):
How are you doing?
Speaker 7 (16:33):
Doing good?
Speaker 6 (16:33):
Doing good?
Speaker 12 (16:35):
Feeling very hopeful on how this defense looks this past game.
I know it's against the Raiders team, but again, when
we first played Philly this year, even then, that was
a really close game and technically I think should have
been a win.
Speaker 1 (16:52):
Yeah.
Speaker 12 (16:53):
Anyways, my curiosity here and I don't know if anybody
else is talking about much and Jerry Jones, you know,
making these moves and saying he's all in. Don't you
think that being all in? I mean, what are we
waiting for on signing GP? Why are we taking so long?
(17:13):
Why are we waiting for the off season? Why not
get them done in seasons?
Speaker 1 (17:18):
Because it's thirty seven million a year, uh, thirty seven million,
and justin Jefferson's contracts thirty five and CDs is thirty four.
So you wanna do that? Pickings thirty seven?
Speaker 12 (17:32):
I mean the way CD Pickings and Beck are you
know that chemistry that they got going on? Yeah, I mean,
why not we have those draft picks that we're going
to use. I would assume defensively, you have your offense set.
Give him the thirty seven. The later it gets off
into the off season, I mean, we're gonna end up,
you know, the way Jerry is, we'll end up with
(17:55):
another forty million dollars a year player. Yeah, if he
waits as long as he likes to wait. But anyways,
thank you very much, go ahead, listen.
Speaker 1 (18:02):
Thanks thanks very much, all right, thanks Hector? Why Yeah,
I don't know if he's called before. If he has,
it's been a little bit, so he's still worthy of
the Here we go, Here we go, really shouldn't be
first time caller, should be you know, first time caller
in a long long time. And so whatever that is
good to hear from you. You know, I was having
(18:24):
that conversation with the colleague of mine just just right
before the show, just about pickings and what do you
do there? And you know, it sounds like the Cowboys
will will franchise tag him if if a deal isn't
you know, hasn't been made, and then but not necessarily
to keep him. It could be, you know, franchised to
(18:46):
trade him. I don't know, I don't love the idea.
I think you got to keep him, you know what
you what you know, the the worry is okay, so
what happened in Vegas? What? What? What? What was going
on there? What what happened? And is at the first
time has it been? Is that a pattern? It is
just gonna continue to happen, you know, can they corral this?
(19:07):
Is this the kind of person you want to give
the money to, the same with CD. Let's don't let's
don't you know, exclude him from the conversation. He was
a part of it too. It's kind of like the
old Cabo thing when Tony Romo went went to Cabo.
We know Whitten was there, you know, I mean, Bobby
Carpenter was there. It didn't matter, but Witten was there,
(19:27):
you know, So like let's don't let's don't just say,
you know, put it on one guy. Same with CD
and Picking. But you know, you don't fool these agents
and the Micah Parsons trade. In my opinion, it was
was big for a lot of reasons because to that point,
(19:48):
all the agents, you know, they they talk, they know, oh,
I gotta I got a big contract coming up with Cowboys.
I got my guy whoever, and you know he's I
got to meet with Jerry and him. He's in the
narrative is Jerry's not gonna let him go, So don't
take a deal because Jerry's not gonna let that guy
get out the door. He doesn't look at all these guys.
He never lets a great player out the door until
(20:10):
he did, until he sent him out the door with
Micaeh Parsons. So now that's not that's not on the
table as far as as that goes. I mean, I
think I think Jerry kind of got some leverage back
that way, and I think taking a deal, you know,
if if George Perkins listens to Dez, which I don't
know if he will or has. Dez has been screaming this.
(20:33):
He said it to me at the game a few
weeks ago, Washington game. He was down there and he
said it. He tweeted it out the other day too.
About you know that George needs to realize that a
few extra dollars here in this city is not going
to go as long as it would be right here.
Take the best deal the Cowboys can get and be
(20:55):
a Cowboy because it's better for you long term and
also even even currently. So we'll see, we'll see if
that's the case. But the agents are if you want
to sign them now that you know it's it's going
to be high, it's it's not going to be, you know,
a great deal. So I think that they do franchise
(21:15):
them and then from there maybe they work out a deal.
We'll see how the season plays out though as well.
Let's go to break real quick on Cowboys storyline. I'll
be right back after this.

Speaker 1 (23:42):
That that was discussed this morning that maybe Wednesday's show
might be one I thought about Monday or Tuesday. But
if it was Monday or Tuesday, it wouldn't be just Jacob.
They would be the little five year old and she
would steal the show and she would ever want to
get off the ball and see. And I don't know
(24:02):
if that's going to be the best plan. Wednesday. We
might get old curly curly hair Jacob. You know, he's
got a perm now, so.
Speaker 16 (24:10):
You know, we'll say he's eleven, now he's ten.
Speaker 1 (24:13):
He's ten, So we'll see if I can get screech
on the show. He doesn't even know the reference, but
it's I do good, you do, but he doesn't, which
is funny. All right, what do you got?
Speaker 16 (24:25):
Speaking of body Carpenter man, I had such high hopes
for that kid. You know, the first talk so good
about him, like he's one of my kind of guys,
you know, just I always had expectations that he was
going to be good.
Speaker 5 (24:39):
That man was just the trash man.
Speaker 1 (24:41):
I'm gonna you know, I'm gonna tell the story. I'm
gonna tell the story because I wrote it in the
book about him.
Speaker 16 (24:48):
I read it, and I'll let you tell it. Off
the air and give my score production in case I
can't get a get in there, get in again. I
think it's gonna be thirty three twenty eight.
Speaker 1 (24:58):
Cowboys always Cowboys win.
Speaker 16 (25:03):
All right, all right, we'll talk later the story again there.
Speaker 1 (25:05):
All right, Yeah, I always I always had a hard
time with this one because I mean it's not nice
at all. But I mean it was told to me
by a couple of scouts and it was just it's funny.
But you know, Parcels obviously coached in the eighties with
you know, with the Giants, and he had a running
(25:27):
back early in the eighties, uh name Rob Carpenter. Full back.
He was your hunter lipkey type, you know. I mean
he was that. He probably a little bit more of
a bruiser. This is the eighties, you know, big, big,
tough running back. You know, just could do whatever, pick
up the blitz, catch the ball, get those extra tough yards.
It's just one of those tough football players, you know.
(25:49):
Rob Carpenter, Well, his son Bobby Carpenter played it, played
at uh Ohio State and played with a j Hawk
and they were really good, you know, together, those those
guys flying around the ball. I was just good. He
was a good college player, and so anyways, I think
after they drafted him a year into the draft, I
think Parcels was doing some complaining in a meeting room
at training camp about him and just not very good
(26:13):
and thought he would be better and all this stuff,
and the scouts were like, well that was your guy, Bill,
I mean you you wanted him. You're the guy that
wanted him, stood on the table for him. Why are
you saying what are you saying to us for You're
the one that wanted him. He's a guy. Oh, I know.
It's like I thought I was getting his dad, ended
up getting his mom, and so what could you say?
(26:36):
All Right, he's actually doing really good on the on
the TV. If you've ever seen Bobby carpent draft forgot
where they have him now, I've seen a couple of
times he's actually he's really good at that. But yeah,
he wasn't just wasn't ever a great player there. All right,
let's go Joe Casey. Joe is in Kansas City.
Speaker 17 (26:52):
Good morning, Nick Cary doing today, sir?
Speaker 1 (26:54):
How are you doing?
Speaker 17 (26:55):
I'm doing real good, sir.
Speaker 7 (26:56):
Hey.
Speaker 17 (26:57):
I was gonna ask you, who do you think he's
going to be the strong always with the defense. Now
is it gonna be cue the new guy or do
you think it'll be over shown? I mean, kind of
lead them, you know, get them all set up.
Speaker 1 (27:09):
Or yeah, you know that that's a good question. I mean,
But whoever it is needs to be a badass player,
you know. I mean, like being a leader is you
can't you can't just be average. You can't give up
plays yourself, you know, so if you're gonna be the
vocal leader of it. So that's why it's it's it's
(27:30):
not as easy as people think of, Oh who's the leader?
You have to be really really good, you know. And
so when you think of leaders, like in the NFL,
like it seems like two guys always come to mind
the most, right, I mean, it seems like it's always
Michael Irv and Ray Lewis type. Well, they were really good.
So when they're yelling and barking at the at their teammates,
(27:51):
they're also making plays. Not gonna name names, but we've
had a couple of guys here when I was here
that tried to be the leader in like okay, but
you know you give up plays too, like you're not
that good. So it's hard to be that leader. So anyways,
whoever it is has got to be backing it up.
And you know, maybe it is Quinnon Williams. I mean,
maybe he can be that that that type of guy.
Speaker 17 (28:12):
True, well, I have one oddball question for you. It's
kind of off the wall, so have you what's up?
Speaker 1 (28:20):
Let's bring it. I mean, if I played baseball, I'd
be a left fielder because I mean everything I say
comes from left field.
Speaker 4 (28:25):
So let's I hear you.
Speaker 17 (28:27):
Anyway, this one's kind of strange.
Speaker 7 (28:29):
The only one I know.
Speaker 17 (28:29):
That did this was Sean Payton because and it was
after halftime at the Super Bowl. I was wondering if
anybody ever did an on side kick at the beginning
of the game to get the advantage so that they
could have the the second half as well. Do you
know anybody that has done that in our league?
Speaker 1 (28:48):
Well, you know, since we're playing the Eagles, thanks for
the call. Since we're playing the Eagles, I think we'll
bring that up. They they did that. I mean in
two thousand, first game of the season, Dave Campo's very
first game, Andy Reid and the Eagles come in here
and do it on side kick and got it and
ended up winning forty one to fourteen in the hottest
(29:11):
game in the history of Texas Stadium. And it was
and in one of the worst games ever you could
think of to start a season, and that was you know,
that wasn't good. But they tried it again too, and
when Parcels got here, they tried to do the same
thing and started the game with an on side kick,
and the Cowboys got it. Randall Williams picked it up
(29:34):
and scored a touchdown and it's claimed to be the
fastest touchdown in the history of the NFL because it
was like three seconds. He was a forty two yard touchdown.
So I don't think he's running three seconds. I think
the guy didn't hit the button early enough because he
didn't assume that you know, they were gonna get the
ball either way, the Cowboys were ready for it. I
think the Cowboys have started a game with an on
side kick. I want to say in Tennessee Christmas Night
(29:57):
in two thousand, maybe that's same season they started the
game with an on side kick and got it. Didn't help.
They lost thirty one to nothing, So it had to
have been they did an on say kick. It had
been to start the game because they didn't kick off again.
So yeah, I think the Cowboys have tried it before,
and I know what's happened to them a couple of times,
and I think other teams around the league have done it.
(30:18):
But I can't do that now. I mean now, you
can't do a surprise on sidekick. You have to set
up for it, so you wouldn't be surprising anybody. All right,
let's go to Katie and Henderson, Nevada. So we're just
passing the phone around here, Katie, what's up? How are
you good?
Speaker 13 (30:38):
Just talking about so my dad just called. He was
so punned to get through, and I'm listening at my house.
Speaker 1 (30:44):
You bought Okay, So you guys aren't together. You guys
are sitting at different places.
Speaker 7 (30:48):
All right, that's right.
Speaker 13 (30:50):
So yeah, like we like to sit and listen to
the podcast and then call each other and talk about
the podcast, just like we do on Sundays. So yeah,
once again, just.
Speaker 16 (30:59):
Reiterate with my dad.
Speaker 13 (31:00):
It was so special meeting you the other day. You're
so nice, and meeting Derek and Ambar from the break
was awesome for us. So it just really made our
experience so special.
Speaker 1 (31:08):
Yeah, yeah, you guys were You guys were great, and
I'm sure you enjoyed the game because it was a
lot of fun, a lot of emotion, a lot of great,
big plays. So it was fun. You know, everybody needed that, everybody,
you know, the Cowboys, Sure, the Raiders need to win,
but you know, well you can worry about that on
Raiders storyline, but the Cowboys, this team, this fan base,
you guys needed something to smile about. And that's you know,
(31:31):
that's what Marshall and Neiland did all the time. He
was always smiling and it was great that that wind
let everybody kind of kind of have some smiles for
a little bit. So it was fun.
Speaker 5 (31:42):
Yeah, we were talking about how it put it in perspective.
Speaker 13 (31:44):
You know, we're not having a great season, so if
we had, we're having a great season and we beat
the Raiders, we'd be like, oh whatever, But this this
was a lift. It really gave us, yeah, a moment
that we needed for sure. So talking about you know,
signing Pickens and how expensive that will be, it seems
like like the Chiefs and then you know the Patriots
under Tom Brady, they found me leave to structure their contracts.
(32:05):
So these star players could stay happy while we still
have like they have like that cap flexibility and they
have a deeper, you know, competitive roster. But like what
what do the Cowboys need to do? You know, what's
just they need to make like contract philosophy or you know,
roster construction so that we can have that like wins
the same team friendly deals that doesn't alienate these like
(32:26):
core players.
Speaker 1 (32:27):
No, that's a that's a great question. That's that's that's
what every GM, every capologist from the you know, from
the NFL team, That's what they set up late at
night trying to figure out. That's that's the biggest question
is how do you how do you to you know,
work the salary cap to your advantage and and the
biggest thing you have to do is draft well, because
(32:49):
if you draft well, then you're getting cheap players that
that are good players quickly, you know, you know, draft
and develop, but they have to be good from the start.
So because that's that's how you you know, now you
can keep trading for guys doctor Cowboys have done, but
they're trading for contracts. It's not it's not always a
great a great situation. So it's it's not easy. You know,
(33:13):
and not that many players do what you just said
about taking less, you know, money and all that Brady
did that that was at Brady's point in his career
where you know, he he was he was chasing a
different thing. You know, he was trying to get get
those rings and all that. And maybe Mahomes is at
that point too, But that's not where a lot of
the players are. It's not where Dak was. So uh,
(33:35):
it's it Usually it doesn't really happen that often where
players take less money to go to go win. That's
not that's not a normal thing. So all right, all right, well,
great to hear from you. And and I'll say your
dad and we got to I'm about to say, I
was about to say, you're on it. Christ's say, hey,
we got to get for that first time caller as well.
(33:57):
So it got two first time callers, both from Henderson, Nevada,
both from the same family, and uh, you know, both
with with really good, good questions and good points. All Right,
we're gonna stay on the West coast or that Pacific region,
I guess. So in Arizona Jr. And Avondale, Arizona Jr.
Speaker 6 (34:17):
Good morning, Nick House. Anything in Dallas.
Speaker 1 (34:19):
Good, how are you well?
Speaker 6 (34:21):
Doing good? Getting better every day? So anyway, we talk
about the Eagles game. So first of all, say Hunter Lipkey,
I know we kind of talked about it earlier, but
I like to see more of him. I think his uh,
his two those are two huge plays that he had,
his two catches, especially the one that set up the touchdown.
So I need to see more of him, and kind
(34:46):
of want to talk about the Eagles passing game. The
first game, they had one exposive play and that was
Brown getting over the top on Elam get a good
job against Smith and A J. Brown. So I see
them double double Smith because I think he's a that
over the top threat. I don't think a J. Brown
(35:09):
is going to run by people like he used to.
I think we single cover him and be physical with
him because he'll get frustrated and go sit on the
bench and read a book or something. So worried about
that guy. So, Dallas Goddard, he had seven catches in
the first game, and every time they needed to play
he made it. And if you watched the Eagles play,
(35:29):
and he makes that play all the time when they
need it. So do you think we may see doan
Bland covering him kind of like they did with Rock Dowers,
or what do you think they can do there to
shut down Dallas Godard Because I think he's he's going
to be a key to this game.
Speaker 1 (35:47):
And that's all I got, brother, have a great day
in go count thank you. That's what That's what makes
him so good is that is that he's not their
top player. You know, if you want to, you want
to take brock Bauers, you you can say, you know,
I'll put a corner on him. You know, I'll put
I'll put a really good corner because they don't have
(36:07):
a ton of other options you're worried about. That's not
the case with the Eagles, And you know, the minute
that you dismiss AJ Brown, I feel like there's a
two hundred yard game coming or something like that. I mean,
the guys, he's a really good player. I don't know
what's happening there. And it kind of worries me a
(36:28):
little bit when you when we've talked about George Pickens
and signing him and all that, because that's sort of
what they did. You know, they they had Aj Brown
big contract and then DeVante got paid. You know, really
well too, And so you get to two guys that
are getting paid, you know, twenty six million a year
or something like that, and I mean at least twenty
(36:48):
six I think that's what what what DeVante got. Aj
Brown's in the thirties, like thirty one or whatever. But
you get that kind of money, you want the ball
and you just can't. You can't get that. He also
had a two thousand yard rusher, you know, and you
have and then they get to the one, two three
yard line they're just gonna push it in. So you're
not gonna get a lot of touchdowns anyways. But to
(37:10):
answer your question about Goddard, I mean, he's just so
tough because you can't. You know, you have to worry
about these other guys. You have to worry about the
deep ball, you have to worry about Barkley, you have
to worry about Jalen Hurts running, and then what do
you know, there's Dallas Dallas Garter Goddard. Got to say
his name, right, Dallas Goddard just running through and making
plays and so that that's what a good offense has,
and that's what the Cowboys are trying to get to
as well. You know, who you want to take away?
(37:32):
Which which receiver? Which back? When you got Turpen flying
around here, next thing you know, Jake Ferguson's over the middle,
wide open with a touchdown in the middle of the
field because of you got other players. So you know,
it's a problem for opposing teams. It's a problem for
the Eagles. I mean for teams that are trying to
stop the Eagles. All right, let's go to Ronnie in
New Jersey.
Speaker 6 (37:51):
Hey, how you doing, Nick?
Speaker 1 (37:52):
Good? How are you good?
Speaker 6 (37:54):
Good? Uh?
Speaker 12 (37:55):
Nick?
Speaker 6 (37:55):
I had a question. I was I was wondering when
when Diggs was coming back, and if he was to
come back this year, what will you do? Because I
mean Carlson, Carson, Kaitlin, he's looking good and and and Rebel.
Look for a guy that had an a c L
it's been out for a year. He looked really good.
(38:15):
And I wasn't expecting that he looked really good in
that game. I get it as the Raiders, but he
looked good as the way he was moving, he look good.
And so Carson is man that guy has he's hitting people.
I mean that guy that that's what we need. We
need guys that are tough mentally tough and they hit
(38:36):
like that. That kind of makes it, you know, the
rest of the team gets decided. I get a sited
at my house in the living room. I'm like, I'm
jumping up and down. I'm like, yeah, so so, yeah,
so what was happening with Diggs if he comes back?
Because I wouldn't say any of these two young guys.
Speaker 1 (38:53):
Yeah you think, all right, well, thanks thanks for the call.
And this is one of the biggest dilemmas that that
just ahead scratcher that nobody seems to have a good
understanding of what's going on. You know, Diggs is eligible
to come back next week. He could, he could play,
he could play the game with the Chiefs. There's some
(39:16):
in the building that I'll say he's he's played his
last snap with the Cowboys. There's others that will say, well,
we'll see how it happens. It's up to him. There's
something going on between Digs and and and the people
behind the scenes and how hard he's working or not working,
and how he handles rehab, you know, with with his
you know, injuries and things like that. And then there's
(39:39):
there's clauses in the contract about that they could get
money back based off of him, you know, because of
the injuries. And I don't know. What I know is
that when he covers people, man demand, he's pretty good.
He's pretty good. And and with with this defensive pressure
that we saw the other night, that they can continue that,
I think it would make him better. I think he
(40:01):
makes Bland better. So where do you play him? You asked?
You play him right there at the best ride receiver
that lines up, and you go up and say, cover
him because he's the best cover guy you want when
he wants to cover, when he wants to play, and
when he wants to cover. But when that is I'm
not sure. And I know it's my job to try
to answer questions, but nobody in this building knows what's
(40:24):
going on with Trayvon Diggs. They just don't. And I
don't know. I wish I did, because I wish he
was out there covering people because the Cowboys are better
when that happens. But for why that it's not happening,
and if it happens again, I wish I had an answer,
but I don't. But we are going to go to
break right here on Cowboys story that I'll be right
(40:44):
back after this.
Speaker 4 (40:47):

Good morning, Nick? How are you?
Speaker 1 (42:07):
I'm good? You just play your name with an E
or an I.
Speaker 11 (42:10):
It's with an e. It's kind of where it's a
it's actually a German name. It's the way it's spelled
in Germany.
Speaker 6 (42:15):
Believe it or not.
Speaker 1 (42:17):
No, you know what, that's the way Chris always writes it.
So I yeah, he always writes that way. But there's
a few people that just kind of I'm always like you,
how do you Maybe we're not saying this or are
spelling it right? But good to know? All right, good?
Speaker 6 (42:31):
Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 7 (42:31):
So just a couple of things, Nick.
Speaker 11 (42:33):
I know, last week we talked about who who would
make the biggest difference, Quinn Williams or like Sauce Gardner,
and I think we both kind of agreed, and I
think a lot of people have Obviously, Quinn Williams, you
know what, did what he did, and I just don't
believe that South Gardner would have ever put that kind
of you know, performance out there like that to change
the game and make the defense look as good as
(42:53):
it did. And the other thing people been kind of
talking about Diggs and as anybody really thought or you
thought about possibly, I know he's kind of kissed the
Cowboys off, probably like Mark Cooper probably did. But moving
him to possibly safety. The guy's got good ball skills,
got good range, height, and I don't know if that
(43:14):
can salvage his career with the Cowboys or not. But
I want to get your thoughts on that.
Speaker 1 (43:18):
Oh man, you're not gonna get You're not going to
get my thoughts on that. No, I don't think that's
a good idea. I really don't. Okay, What Digs does
the best is cover and that's what you need from
your cornerback to do. It's not always about communication and
(43:41):
all that. This guy doesn't talk much. He's not He's
communication isn't good. The Cowys didn't know where he was
all off season. Part of being a safety is doing
that right, is communication? Getting people lined up right? That's
not going to be his thing. What's the other knock
that on Digs a lot is tackling. You got to
(44:01):
go hit people at safety and I and I've never
had a problem with what Trayvon does because he plays
corner and he does that and he's he's not very big,
and he you know, just go I don't need you
to go be you know Rod Woodson from the Steelers.
I need you to just cover your guy, so, you know,
line getting people lined up, knowing where you're supposed to
(44:23):
be understanding, Okay, now we're we're gonna blitz here. So
now this guy's got him and he's gonna slide over
and all. No, no, no, that's why he's not really
been that great in zone. He's more of a cover corner.
That's what he does. So I think from a from
a communication and physicality standpoint, that's what you need from
your safeties. I think a lot of people kind of
(44:44):
think over the years that if you're if you're a
corner that's lost a step, maybe you just slide in there.
Speaker 10 (44:51):
You know.
Speaker 1 (44:52):
It's the same with like a tackle, like offensive tackle. Well,
you know, it's not what he used to be. Maybe
he just plays guard, you know, and maybe he could,
but it has to be because that's for the right
reasons of it. So I said I wouldn't give you
an answer, and I did. I just don't think that's
a good fit for him. I think he's a corner.
I think he's a cover corner, and I think he's
a good one when he wants to play. I just
(45:12):
don't know when that always is. I would love to
see him back this year. I would love to see
him playing a lot of manned man defense opposite of
Bland like this. Revel can get in there at Carson,
those guys can get in there. But i'd like to
see him with this defense. I don't know if it'll happen.
Let's go to Brad in l A'll be our last caller. Brad,
what's up?
Speaker 6 (45:32):
I'm good?
Speaker 1 (45:32):
How good? It's been a little bit, right.
Speaker 20 (45:36):
It's been about a year. Yeah, and it's crazy. I
had pretty much where one was about Diggs, So I
guess we'll just move on from that because it was
about safety as well.
Speaker 11 (45:45):
You answered that.
Speaker 1 (45:46):
That's my that's my opinion, you know, I agree. Yeah,
and some corners have done it. I mean, you know,
I've seen it happen. Doesn't happen a lot, but you know,
it takes. It's more. It's more than just the just
lining up back there. I mean, I don't know if
his body type and his skill site as skill set,
(46:06):
I don't think he's fit for safety in my opin, I.
Speaker 8 (46:09):
Agree, I agree.
Speaker 20 (46:11):
My My second question was, I know the defense is
kind of starting to maybe jail, but I know there's
still a possibility that we might move on from eber Flues.
If we did, what defensive coordinator would you like to see?
And are you a fan of Rex Ryan sliding in
that position?
Speaker 1 (46:28):
Uh no, not really a feel of that. But but
let's let's let's wait on eber Flues. Let's just see.
Let's just see how it goes here. Let's see if
we can, you know, see this defense get off the
field a little bit more. See if they can beat
one of these teams and beat one of these really
good quarterbacks. Then you can go back and go. You
(46:49):
know what, he needed some players, He needed some players,
and he didn't need you to trade his best player
right before the start of the season, when he was
going all off season planning to have this kind of defense.
And now the next thing, you know, boom, you don't
have digs. I mean, you don't have parsons, you don't
have digs. For most of the time, you know, you
didn't have overshown and all that. So let's see when
(47:10):
you got some of these pieces in just how good
this did. He can be a great defensive coordinator because
he has but you know so, but I'm and I'm
not comfortable with with talking about possible replacements when he's
here asked every day and night to try to get
this thing better. When it doesn't happen and they move on.
(47:31):
If that happens, then we'll talk replacement.
Speaker 7 (47:34):
Okay, yeah, another one.
Speaker 20 (47:36):
Yeah, one last question. I know it's early, just like it,
you know, talking about eber flu. But I know it's
I know this year isn't over, but it's kind of
you know, I know, I see a lot of people
online that are kind of already getting excited about next year.
I know the draft is coming up, and I know
it's a very deep draft. It's kind of a two
part question. How do you think we'll go first round
offense or defense? And who do you like coming out
(47:56):
of the first round for us with either pick?
Speaker 1 (47:59):
Yeah? Well all right, thanks Brat. You know I'm not
I'm not huge on being a draft guy. You haven't
seen me on the draft show things like that. We
have people that do that, they study it. They love it.
It's the passion in them. It's not really for me.
I think it's tough, you know. I think it's it's very,
very difficult to evaluate players when you're trying to play
(48:20):
catch up. You know, these scouts have been doing it
for two to three years that they you know, they've
been following these guys. So to come in here and
watch a guy for three three games and the cut
up and to say well he can do this and that,
you know, I think it's it's it's difficult to do.
So I'm not I'm not a big fan of that.
I'll say this. I can talk about what the needs
(48:40):
would be and as it stands right now, Yeah, you
would love to see a pass rusher that can really
come in here and do some stuff. Maybe a corner,
you know, depending on what you've got, you know, at
corner and linebacker. Safety. You know, safety could be one
where the guys that are starting right now may not
be on the team next year. I'm so there's you.
You've got questions all across the defense. On offense, if
(49:05):
an offensive tackle is there in the first round, that
would be better than what you have that I'm for it.
I mean I would definitely do it and just figure
it out. So that would be one where I would
say that, And then I don't know about running back.
Running back's gonna be tough. I mean, I know there's
a guy Notreed Dame that everyone loves. But the thing
about it is, you know, Rico Dalla went for a
(49:26):
thousand yards undrafted, and then Davonte Williams nobody wanted him.
They got him for you know what, three million a year,
and he's he's gonna have He's he might make the
Pro Bowl. So I think it's going to be a
tough sell to say, do we need a first round
pick on a running back? I mean, like it's it's working,
you know what they're doing right now. So I'd be
fine with offensive tackle though the first round. But we'll see.
(49:49):
I still think one of those two picks will get
moved to go backwards because you do not have a
second and a third as it stands right now, and
I think that's I don't know. Cowboys are going to
show up on Friday of the draft and then they'd
like to have a pick. So I'll be surprised if
they don't move one of those first rounders to get
you know, to get backwards to do that. All right,
But that's that's for April next April. That's next year.
(50:09):
We're still talking about the Eagles, and we'll talk about
that and wrap up the week of shows. We'll do
it tomorrow on Cowboys storyline for Chris Beam. I'm nick
even see it in.
Speaker 2 (50:18):
This has been a production of Dallascowboys dot Com and
the Dallas Cowboys Football Club.
