Speaker 2 (00:05):
Boys.
Speaker 1 (00:07):
This is Cowboys storyline presented by Gillette, the official shave
of the Dallas Cowboys.
Speaker 3 (00:15):
Here's Nick Eatman, what is up?
Speaker 4 (00:21):
Welcome to Cowboys storyline presented by Gillette. And today is
a different day because we've got Darren Woodson in the house.
I almost said hall of Famer because I know that's
gonna happen.
Speaker 5 (00:34):
Let's get it.
Speaker 2 (00:35):
Wait, first of all, why is your chair always higher
than mine every time I come in here?
Speaker 5 (00:39):
Well?
Speaker 2 (00:39):
Is it like I feel like you're looking down at me?
Speaker 4 (00:42):
Well, I'm certainly not. I'm never looking down as you.
I just called you a Hall of Famer ring of honor.
Speaker 5 (00:49):
A little sensitive.
Speaker 4 (00:50):
Yeah, anyone that's ever seen my office knows only have
one picture in there. It's this guy, which you've signed it,
which you might need to resign that again because it's
but I don't know, maybe it's just you know, the
ego and me of the show. You know, I got
my home show. I got my own chair, you know,
big chair. Anyways, man, Darren, so good to have you.
I know that you've you've been on a couple of
times with this first time this season uh. And a
(01:12):
lot of the fans are like, when When'soody coming back?
When's Woody coming back? What a perfect time to do
that because I want to talk about not only Cowboys
trying to get this thing turned around, but this last weekend.
How awesome that was. So you guys to see a
bunch of former players, so real quick though, and this
is a fan show. We'll get to some callers, but
I want to ask you what are you seeing from
this football team right now? I mean, their defense is
(01:33):
not defense that you you remember seeing when you played,
but they're trying.
Speaker 2 (01:38):
To play much better, you know, And it's almost like
week to week but in figuring out what's happening with
eber Flus's defense, but it seemed last week they played
with a lot more intensity. They played with a lot
more understanding of what their roles were.
Speaker 5 (01:51):
And you know, I couldn't I was at the game.
Speaker 2 (01:53):
I couldn't really see all the coverages and what they
were exact, you know, exactly what they're running. I they're
run his own or I know they played a lot
more manned. I'm used to seeing them play, but I
just saw them play with more discipline than this game.
Speaker 5 (02:05):
And maybe it had.
Speaker 2 (02:06):
Something to do with you know, look, the Commanders didn't
have their top guys out there, but there's no excuse.
Speaker 5 (02:13):
I mean, this team came out and played extremely well,
ran to the ball.
Speaker 2 (02:17):
And one thing I've known about this Eberflus defense, even
when they're not playing well and they gave them giving
up big plays, they still play hard.
Speaker 5 (02:25):
I mean they're still trying to run to the ball.
Speaker 2 (02:26):
They may get out physical or whatnot, but they're still
running down the field and trying to make plays and
guys are trying to scramble around and get there.
Speaker 5 (02:34):
But this past.
Speaker 2 (02:34):
Weekend, uh, they had the They played by far their
best defensive game that I've seen this this year in
a discipline, not giving up the big play, keeping things
in front of them, and then had to turnover with
Bland with the interception return, which was which is awesome, man.
But you know, defensively is going to be a work
in progress every single week. Offensively, man, you know what
(02:56):
you got. I mean, this is this is fun. It's
fun to watch, it really is. It's fun to watch
Dak and the wide receivers in the offensive line get
after people. Man.
Speaker 5 (03:06):
It's it's been a joy to watch.
Speaker 4 (03:08):
I mean, having a dog at ride receiver is great,
but two dogs.
Speaker 5 (03:13):
Two of them, man, and so you got two ones.
It's hard.
Speaker 2 (03:16):
Look, I've been on the on the defensive side of
the ball when you have a Randy Moss or you
have a guy or a Jerry Rice. But you know,
it was a time when I remember playing San Francisco
and they had Jerry Rice and t O on the
other side and was an upcoming dog at the same time,
so you knew they had number one, and it's hard
to double. It's hard to double one guy and then
(03:37):
you have to play another guy one on one, or
you try to double two guys and then you leave
yourself open to the run game.
Speaker 5 (03:43):
You know, it's it's it's a Viking.
Speaker 4 (03:45):
Yeah, Chris Carter.
Speaker 2 (03:47):
Yeah, And I would say this, look, I think this
this this due was better than that Moss Carter duo.
I mean because Chris Carter was gonna run the underneath routs.
He wasn't gonna take you deep, take the top off
the defense. That both of these guys, right, you can
take the top off the defense. Both of these guys
can run the mid range routes and when they get
the ball in their hand.
Speaker 5 (04:06):
They're dangerous.
Speaker 4 (04:07):
All right, Let's let's get to some callers quickly before
we get into we'll talk about the weekend and just
how awesome that was. Let's go to it. This is
a new caller for us, Charlie. He's in Lancaster, California. Charlie.
What's up?
Speaker 5 (04:21):
What's up? Nick?
Speaker 2 (04:22):
What's up?
Speaker 5 (04:23):
Hey, Charlie?
Speaker 4 (04:24):
Man, how's it going?
Speaker 6 (04:27):
Pretty good?
Speaker 7 (04:27):
Man?
Speaker 6 (04:27):
It's the first time caller. I've been a big fan
of E since the break. I would follow you. I
think you're like the man when it comes to h
the cowboys and reporting on them, So I always follow
your stuff.
Speaker 4 (04:36):
Man, A thank you, you're embarrassing me. Thanks you for
the Woodie we do have. Yeah, first time calling, Charlie,
you you got, you got lucky. Your first time. Your
first call is with Woody. You don't have to ask
me anything. You can ask Woody what what do you got?
Speaker 6 (04:51):
Yeah? Okay, you know, I know you guys talked about
the defense and Woody as a as a forward player.
I know when you look at the guys, you see
how hard you're playing and you're analyzing that. I truly
believe what the help they got coming do you see
that spirit in them? You know, since you're a defensive guy,
do you see that spirit of them coming together and
really truly, you know, getting to the middle of the
back of the defense. I believe in them. I think
(05:11):
they're going to be able to get to that point.
And I see it. I see them coming together and
you know who got them back. So it's very exciting.
I appreciate you being a fan of you man, and
you guys have a good day.
Speaker 4 (05:21):
Thank you so much. Calls back Charlie. I know we
have to be quick, but it's good to hear from you.
What do you think they got this? They got the
dog in them on defense?
Speaker 2 (05:28):
Well, you look, you talk about the dog in defense
that I've played on some great defensive teams, and talent
is it shows itself right, So talent's got to pop
in aggressiveness and.
Speaker 5 (05:38):
Knowing what you're doing.
Speaker 2 (05:39):
I don't know if they have the personnel just yet
to be that dog that you're expecting, like a shutdown defense.
That's probably not gonna happen. Let's just be real about that.
I mean, they're not going to be a shut down defense.
But can they can they maintain and not give up
the big place. I think this defense has those capabilities,
but I think there's got to You got to give
ebra Flu some credit for he's had a lot of criticism.
(06:00):
He's had to deal with a team that's, you know,
a new system that's come in is deep that the
personnel is just getting to know his schemes. He's not
put he hasn't implemented everything. They just came off the
Zimmers scheme. So there are some growing pains that are
going going along with us. And you just lost your
best player on the defensive side.
Speaker 5 (06:19):
Yeah that's I mean, look, let's not forget you.
Speaker 2 (06:22):
You just lost your best football player on the defensive ball,
the guy who's made the most impact in the last
four or five years. And now you're adjusting to all
those things. So they're gonna have to adjust to this.
It's not gonna this is not an overnight situation.
Speaker 4 (06:37):
I know, but but the first time we've had you
on here.
Speaker 2 (06:39):
Look, he's a phenomenal player football player. I just watched
him Sunday night Arizona. I guess Arizona he is. He
is probably the best pass rusher. If I think he's
the best pass rusher in football hands down, just one
on one.
Speaker 5 (06:54):
Uh, I still thought that the Cowboys.
Speaker 2 (06:58):
You know, look, I felt like the Cowboys got down
the road in these negotiations and something happened that turned
them off. And I'm not sure what happened, and I
still don't know. I do think that he's he's in
a better place. He's happy and where he at. The
Cowboys are happy where they are, and they got picks
for it. I wish they would have got more, you know,
the trade partner was a little different. Yeah, I wish
(07:20):
it would have been, you know, the Carolina Panthers or
something like that. But at the same time, I think
both parties are happy now where they where they are.
Speaker 5 (07:28):
But yeah, I thought it was a it was an okay.
Speaker 4 (07:31):
I mean, you know, if for you as a veteran,
if you if you saw one of your teammates laying
down on the table in the middle of a preseason, yeah,
that's problem.
Speaker 2 (07:39):
Yeah, there were a lot of those problems, right, So
I knew there were some incidents that probably took place
behind the scenes.
Speaker 5 (07:45):
And I won't even get into those.
Speaker 2 (07:46):
I won't even get into those because that's that's a
locker room deal and you got to handle that. But
if the character is not there and you don't you
don't like that character.
Speaker 5 (07:56):
Then yeah, I mean then it's time to go.
Speaker 4 (07:58):
Yeah, all right, well let's let's take We're gonna take
a quick break here, real quick. We got a couple
of calls on the line. We're gonna take quick break.
We'll be right back here on Cowboys storyline.

Speaker 4 (09:50):
All right back here on Cowboys Storyline. I've got Darren
Woodson in the house, So excited for that Woodie. We
talked in this last segment about what this Cowboy team
needs to do, and last week was a great win.
For them before the game. You guys, it was forty
two former players. They called it homecoming. I mean, why
not high school college? Everyone else does it cow Boys homecoming?
(10:13):
Forty two players? You had to play? It's five they
went five years or more. They weren't going to go
six years or more. And then Charles Haley was like, hello,
five years, you know what, Okay, five years or or more.
I think they should make a ring of honor exemption
for whatever. But how fun was that? And who did
you see that you hadn't seen them forever? And that
(10:33):
it was just so great to catch.
Speaker 2 (10:34):
Up with, uh man, so many guys man that hadn't
seen you know, Roger has been a mentor of mine,
not only in mostly on the business side of things.
Speaker 5 (10:43):
And it was good to see Roger Staubach.
Speaker 2 (10:45):
And Drew and Bob Runick was I mean, Bob's been
fantastic for me in the business world as well. So
those are a lot of the guys I didn't play with,
and it was great to see them. But the you know,
the usuals, man, I haven't seen a guy think Herban McCormick.
Probably most of you probably wouldn't even know that name,
but Herban McCormick was a guy to play up. We
played with for a long time. I hadn't seen herven
(11:07):
he went five. Yeah, really, yeah, I hadn't seen Herban
in easily twenty some years. Yeah, that's a live He
lives in uh in Orlando, so he was good to see.
And of course the usual, you know, Kevin smith Man,
me and Pup. People don't realize. I was talking to
my wife and I was like, Kevin and I were.
We came in the same year. We room made it
nine straight years, likely on the road. Like, he's like
(11:29):
one of my best best friends ever.
Speaker 4 (11:33):
Yeah, well you start making Pro Bowls like ninety.
Speaker 5 (11:36):
Five, ninety four, ninety five somewhere in there.
Speaker 4 (11:39):
Yeah he still were You still had a roommate for
nine years.
Speaker 2 (11:42):
Oh yeah, dude, you kept a roommate, You kept the
room room. Yeah no, when when pop leup, I didn't
have a roommate. Kevin left, So but it was uh,
I mean, it was just awesome to be around those
got Tony Tober, Charles Haley. You know, all the stories
got you know, all the stories got bigger and bigger,
and the lives got bigger and bigger. I saw Ken
North on the side of who was coaching for the
Washington Commanders who walked on over man. It was just
(12:05):
it was just an awesome setting for for the guys
to get back. And I still think we need to
do more of that. We don't do enough of that
within this organization.
Speaker 4 (12:13):
Yeah, and I know they're working on it. I know
that Emily, Yeah, she's doing a great job. And I
got Tony helping that, Tony Harrison helping with that. Tony
dor set though was there. Yeah, see Tony, Tony D.
I snuck a picture of Tony D and I was
just like, you know, you can tell him his's face.
He wasn't really happy about it. Shocker, but you know,
(12:35):
here's what he wants to be by hisself. Here's a
little you know or normal. I don't know, it was good.
It's just good to see. No, I mean, you can't
have that stuff without Himmett. So, you know, I don't
know where Michael was. Michael, I guess, I don't know.
Speaker 2 (12:49):
I may have been out of town, but you know,
E's guy usually making I saw Dez Dez walked in
out it. Dees wasn't a part of our you know,
the teams that I played on but man, you know
Dez's energy man is still the same, still just you know,
he just brings so much.
Speaker 5 (13:02):
I wish I would have played with des Brant. Yeah,
I always one guy I wish I could have played.
Speaker 4 (13:07):
I always say this abouts was he made practice so
much better. He took the intent because he would talk
so much trash, right, the dvs would get so pissed.
Next thing, you know, you have a great practice in
the Yeah, and he would do that sounds familiar.
Speaker 5 (13:22):
Yeah, he's got him another eighty eight.
Speaker 4 (13:24):
My god, I played all right, let's go speaking of
Let's go to Mike in Birmingham, England. Mike, I know
you've been waiting. Thanks for waiting.
Speaker 11 (13:33):
Oh, that's not a problem at all. It's great to
listen to you both chatting and how are you both doing?
Speaker 5 (13:38):
Great?
Speaker 11 (13:39):
Good, excellent. Well, we're known for our royal family over
here and it's great to be talking to two members
of Cowboys royalty today. Three let's throw Chris into that
so real honor to the to the Speaking to Woody
so on Sunday, I was really really pleased for Matt
Eberflu's One of the features of this season has been
(14:00):
on the telly. They keep cutting the camera to Ebasloose
when things are going badly, and they cut to him
on Sunday when things are going rather better, and his
expression is exactly the same. He's not someone who kicks
water bottles around when it's going badly. He's not someone
who's jumping around. But nick I just wandered behind the scenes.
On a personal level, how do you think he's been
(14:21):
coping with the challenges this year? And wood he from
a player's point of view, how hard is it when
there's such a disparity between what the offense and defense
are able to do. How hard is it to kind
of keep that squad unity and togetherness?
Speaker 4 (14:37):
Yeah, all right, thank you for the call, Mike.
Speaker 5 (14:40):
That's great. That's a great question. Have you had you
oh yeah, oh yeah, absolutely.
Speaker 2 (14:45):
When the defense has played well in the office hasn't
and vice versa, you know, you have to stay connected
within the locker room. It's obvious that there's going to
be some issues like when the defense is playing or
the office is playing the way they're playing right now
and the defense can't carry us weight, you'll see a
lot of you know, hymns and halls on the sideline,
and you know we gave them in the first down.
We can't get on the field as an offense. You know,
(15:07):
we're giving up these big plays. We always got to match,
you know. You you get a lot of that going on.
We're people, We're no different, you know, it's just a
microcosm of society, right, So you got to handle that.
The leaders really have to stand up in these situations.
The leaders have to in that locker room have to
diffuse that. Guys like Dak are going to have to
defuse any of those situations. And I heard after the
(15:28):
game what Dak said. They asked him a direct question
about the defense and how they played, and he just
he jumped right on it. Man, he said, man, we cheering.
We're cheering those guys on. You know, there are teammates
that you know, he said all the right things. And
that's the way you have to act because you're gonna
have some some situations. There's gonna be some some animosity there.
They have diffused it for now, but again this changed.
(15:50):
This does I mean, this happens both ways now. I
mean you can you can look here in the next
few weeks and watch offense who puts up six points
in the defense.
Speaker 5 (15:58):
Who played shut down? We'll go back way back and.
Speaker 4 (16:01):
Forth, especially with the weather turning, and sometimes there'll be
some games old weather that all of a sudden it's
just tougher to move the ball. So all right, let's
go to Michael and Bowling Green, Kentucky. Michael, what's up?
Speaker 12 (16:13):
Oh lord, I'm talking to our NFL legend here.
Speaker 4 (16:20):
Yeah, let's already should already be. What do you got, Mike?
Speaker 12 (16:26):
I just got one quick question because I know people
are dying to get on.
Speaker 13 (16:30):
Uh.
Speaker 12 (16:31):
The Cowboys they against Washington, they played a lot of
man and blitzed a lot, a lot more than half.
Do you think that was designed for that game or
do you think that will continue this season?
Speaker 5 (16:46):
Good question? I think I think it depends on the personnel. Honestly.
Speaker 2 (16:50):
Look, you know you saw the I want to call
them the risk and about you saw the commanders, and
they were they were depleted at the wide receiver position.
So if you feel like you have a good matchups,
and you know you like your corners matchup against their
guys in one on one situation, that's a game time
not a game time decision, but it's like a game
plan decision to say, Okay, yeah, they don't have a
guy that can really hurt us in certain in these situations.
(17:13):
Now you play this week. Who they have this week?
They got Denver with Sutton. Yeah on the outside, that's
going to be a different game. Do you leave your
guys wanting one on one with with a Suddon out there,
and and I think Ebau is gonna have to he's
gonna have to his hands full again this week. As
far as what kind of game plan, I'm not gonna
They're very good this week. When they kept it simple,
(17:34):
we used to call it keeping it simple stupid. You
go play Manda man. Everybody in the world knows how
to play one on one man to man, and that's
keeping it simple stupid. But they did bring some pressure
behind it for the first time, and I really, I
really enjoyed to see them, you know, put those corners
out there on the edge by themselves one on one
and get some pressure on the quarterback.
Speaker 4 (17:51):
You know, we talk about the fact of you don't
have micro We know that they have to generate a
little bit moressing and by doing that, it's easier to
play man. When when you're blitzing.
Speaker 2 (18:02):
Right, Yeah, it's a lot easier to play man when
you're blitzing, but at the same time, you.
Speaker 5 (18:05):
Gotta get there. Yeah, you can't allow guys.
Speaker 2 (18:08):
You can blitz all you want, but if you can't
get to the quarterback and you can't cover on the
outside and you're getting double moved because the pressure isn't
there and you're thinking that the ball needs to come out,
There's there's some times I'm serious, like when you're as
a defensive back, do you want to play man to man? Absolutely,
because simplify some certain things, but that pass us needs
to get there and if it doesn't, then that you
(18:29):
get exposed on the back end.
Speaker 4 (18:30):
And also when the playing zone, when you play zone,
you got to have some great safety play. Yeah, and
I've said this before in my life of working in
front of the Cowboys, is they missed number twenty eight
at safety. Like I've said that several times, you know,
referring to you mostly now they do miss Mollie Cooker
as well. Yeah, miss twenty eight. I don't know why
they haven't returned it, but that's okay. But but still,
(18:53):
you know, they don't retire numbers. But still, but twenty
eight Milik Cooker. I think that you know, he's been
he's kind of a quarterback back there as well. Obviously
they miss him as well.
Speaker 2 (19:01):
They do, and it's you know, when you're the quarterback
of that defense getting guys lined up again.
Speaker 5 (19:06):
It goes back to the minimal mistakes. You know, one thing.
Speaker 2 (19:08):
Jimmy Johnson used to always says, Look, I can get
over the fact that physically you may get beat physically,
the guy may be faster than you, may be stronger,
and you're not gonna win those one on one battles.
But he would never do it. Was no excuse for
giving a blowing a coverage. There was zero excuse for
blowing the coverage. And that's that's the key to great defenses.
When you guys are all connected, you understand where you're
(19:30):
supposed to be, and that's how you play good zone coverage.
You can pass off guys, you can have your eyes
on the quarterback and hopefully the pass rush gets there.
But that's how you play good zoned coverage is when
you have a guy in two safeties who can get
guys lined up.
Speaker 4 (19:45):
All right, All right, well we're going to take another
break here on the Cowboys storyline and then, Darren, it's
been so good to have you here for this, for
this portion of the show. But we'll be right back

just roll for a little while. Randy and Texas Canada.
What he is one of my favorite callers ever. He's
from the same hometown where my mom lives. Randy texta Canda,
(21:36):
what's up? Man?
Speaker 13 (21:37):
Hey, man, you ain't gotta go through all that, Darren.
Those who line the man prayed for me and I
pulled through.
Speaker 4 (21:42):
That's true, that's true, that's right.
Speaker 15 (21:45):
Right.
Speaker 13 (21:46):
I recorded that on my photos on my phone. I've
showed everybody that video. I was proud of it.
Speaker 4 (21:52):
That's right, man.
Speaker 13 (21:53):
That was pretty cool.
Speaker 4 (21:55):
You you have You've had the biggest win of anybody
so far.
Speaker 5 (22:00):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (22:00):
So, and I know you hate talking about it, so
let's just keep going. Man, what do you got for Woody?
Speaker 13 (22:05):
Well, first of all, I know what he could hit
back in the day, so I'm I'm assuming he can
still hit reach over and smack Nick for me.
Speaker 5 (22:13):
You gonna ask me to do that? Randy?
Speaker 13 (22:17):
Yesterday, Miss Camil called in and to me, it just
felt like he was trying to rush his own mama
off the phone. I'm like, dude, let Robin Vegas can wait.
Let that woman talk.
Speaker 16 (22:28):
She didn't even bring up me.
Speaker 13 (22:29):
I was waiting on her to talk about me. She
didn't even do it. I was like, come on, Nick,
let the woman talk.
Speaker 4 (22:34):
Hey, Hey, in the world, Randy. Randy, when when you
were younger and then wood he can relate. You got
your mom on the phone. I mean, you're just trying
to get off the phone. Don't matter if whatever. He's
just like all right, you know because if the longer
he talks the horse, he's gonna ask you to take
out the trash or do something.
Speaker 13 (22:53):
Just you just you just praise you was gonna tell
us something you don't want too?
Speaker 15 (22:58):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (22:59):
Maybe all right, Rady?
Speaker 4 (23:01):
What you got, man?
Speaker 15 (23:03):
Uh?
Speaker 13 (23:03):
Not much. I just won't talk to day and I
was just just man. I saw him on that. I
was like, hey, I got to get in already.
Speaker 9 (23:10):
Yep.
Speaker 13 (23:10):
Uh No, Man, that was so exciting for me to
talk to you last time. I had to get back
in and talk to you again and let you know
everything went well. I'm back in my truck, I'm back
at work, guys.
Speaker 16 (23:19):
Really heck.
Speaker 13 (23:20):
Yeah, so that was awesome seeing you on TV the
other day too. Over on the sideline in New Jersey.
I like that.
Speaker 2 (23:26):
Yeah, man, you know what, Randy, we had a great time,
and it's been a long time since all the guys
have gotten together. But to sit there and watch the
game and then you know what's crazy is you play
this game. I played this game for thirteen twelve years
here in the in the NFL, and you know, all
those years in college. But you get on the sideline
and you've been away from it for a while, and
then you see these guys walk out and you're like, damn,
(23:48):
they're huge, man, Like why, I mean, I played this game,
but like you really have to reset yourself in mind
to think, man, this was these guy's big.
Speaker 5 (23:57):
They're hitting hard and you know they're getting after it,
and uh.
Speaker 2 (24:00):
They just felt like they were that much bigger than
than I remember.
Speaker 13 (24:04):
Well that that's kind of crazy that you bring that up,
because that was gonna be my question for you, and
if you if you got something off the top of
your head there to tell us a quick little story
about is there. I know you was a good hitter.
I like how you hit. But was there a player
in your day that when you saw him you were like, uh,
I'm gonna do one of these deon?
Speaker 5 (24:25):
No, man, you know why, let me tell you why. Like,
of course you saw.
Speaker 2 (24:29):
There were guys that I saw and I was like, man,
that's a They had a running back in that land.
I can't remember his name, big boy man. He's tall
to sixty three or so. He was just running over people. No, no,
he was like he was the backup. He was number
forty something.
Speaker 5 (24:44):
I remember.
Speaker 13 (24:44):
He was probably a little crazy too.
Speaker 5 (24:47):
Said he was a huge.
Speaker 2 (24:49):
He's a huge if I saw him hit John Lynch
in a game, and I was like, goodness, lord, not
I mean on his butt, but I was, you know,
I saw him. And there were a few other Brandon Jacob's.
I think it was coming in right when I was
going out. But there are some big big run Rodney
Hampton was a big running back. But here's the thing.
When you when you play a guy and you play
(25:10):
the position that I played at the safety position. You
can't have that mentality of back down, like there's no
back down in you, like there is a there's a
mindset that you have because not only are you having
to do your job, but there's fifty three other dudes
who are watching you do your job, Like I'm serious,
So watching film the next day and you're cowering and
(25:32):
your your teammates are watching you. Not feel that hole, No, man,
that ain't happening, dude, like I'm feeling it. I am
feeling it, and and.
Speaker 4 (25:41):
It's it's it's feast or famine right Well, Randy, thank
you so much for the call. Man. You know, we
got to keep it rolling, always doing to hear from you.
Speaker 5 (25:51):
You're hearing from you ready.
Speaker 4 (25:53):
You know, we've done the documentary on you and where
you grew up and had some tough times early on.
You know, some of the some of the places where
you're around, where you lived, and some of the people
that you kind of ran around with or whatever, and
so being scared wasn't something that do a lot. So
when it's almost like when you got to NFL, it's like, no,
(26:15):
I'll show you what.
Speaker 2 (26:16):
Yeah, you know what I think there's always fear, like
there's there's a misnomer there.
Speaker 5 (26:20):
I think there's always some type of doubt in you.
Speaker 2 (26:23):
Like how the question is how do you overcome the doubt?
Speaker 5 (26:27):
Like I firmly believed in.
Speaker 2 (26:29):
Myself, Like I believed in my abilities until this day.
Speaker 5 (26:34):
Even in the business world.
Speaker 2 (26:35):
Man, I believe in myself because I do what I
do do well is I prepare well. And when you
can prepare the right way and firmly believe in your
skill set, then that's you. You become dangerous. You really
become dangerous. And the great ones that I've watched over
the years of Dion Sanders, man there was true belief
in his capabilities, Like he walked on the field knowing
(26:56):
he was the guy. Michael Urban walked on the field
knowing he was a guy. And I firmly felt like
when I walked on that football field, man, we could
I could be as nice as I wanted to be
in the locker room and have a fun and all that.
But when you cross that line, dude, it's it is
a totally different game. It's yeah, could you know here's
the thing. People again, they count on you. Your teammates
(27:19):
are counting on you to be that dog. So be
that dog.
Speaker 4 (27:22):
Hey, I remember a time, you know when you weren't
so nice in the locker room either. Man, I was
always nice in the locker really when the dominoes were out.
Speaker 5 (27:30):
Oh yeah, when I was different. Man, that was.
Speaker 4 (27:34):
A quick story around that stuff. The team wasn't good,
the two thousand and two teams, it wasn't wasn't that
good and had a chance to be, uh, just just
competitive all the every week. And I remember Woody saying, hey,
we got to get because a lot of people were
playing dominoes and cards in there. We got to get
the dominoes out of the locker room. Well, the problem
was the guy that was playing the dominoes was Emmit Smith.
(27:58):
He was he was the main guy, so he was
I remember that being kind of tricky because you're trying
to do your thing being lead. But it was like,
you know, well now you got.
Speaker 2 (28:06):
It, and then it understood. I mean he absolutely understood
where we were. I mean it was just a conversation
and hey, look, I think every locker room is different,
but there's a point, a time and point when you
got to feel it, like, you know, where are we
in this season, you know, things were going good. Hey,
I don't care guys playing much dominards they want, but
the reality is things weren't going good, and you know,
(28:27):
we were missing assignments and thinking guys weren't showing up late,
and we weren't as a discipline of the team. So
I think that's when you got to, you know, really
get your mindset back on what's important and what's important.
Wasn't you know, the card games and dominant? What was
important was the football?
Speaker 4 (28:43):
All right, let's go back to the phone lines Robbie
and Koco Beach, Florida. Robbie, what's up, Nick?
Speaker 6 (28:48):
What's up?
Speaker 17 (28:48):
Mister Woodson?
Speaker 3 (28:49):
How you doing?
Speaker 5 (28:49):
Rob?
Speaker 17 (28:51):
I am outstanding man. Every time I've called, I never
I never got you. I did ask Nick a couple
a year ago, maybe if I, if I, if you,
what should I call you? And he said, call him
Darren or call him Woody. That's how he'd introduced himself.
And I was like, that's nice to know, man, So
appreciate that.
Speaker 5 (29:08):
Yeah, Yeah, I'm man. That's my dad's man.
Speaker 17 (29:15):
Two questions. One, you guys probably can't answer. And if
even if you know, you probably aren't allowed because the
pr what's going on with Trayvon?
Speaker 5 (29:25):
Two?
Speaker 17 (29:26):
How did you two become friends? And I'll take it
off the air and listen and God bless you and
think and I really hope you make it this year.
You know you deserve it.
Speaker 4 (29:33):
Thanks brother, thank you, Uh Trayvon. I mean, honestly, they're
really not saying, what's what's going on? He had he
got a concussion at home? What the story is? Which
of which of the four stories should I believe? And
I don't know, doesn't really matter what matters. I mean,
(29:55):
what really matters is is he going to be able
to play, you know, this week or next week? And
that's something they still don't know the answer to. They're frustrated.
They're frustrated because there are players, not just players, there's people.
Think about your own office, think about people you go
to school with. If it ain't one thing, it's another, right, Okay,
(30:16):
it always is, And that those people are frustrating because
you know they're talented, but it's just hard to trust
on and off the field. Then I don't know how
to say it.
Speaker 2 (30:26):
I don't either, and I don't know the situation. I'll
just call it what it is. I don't know the situation. No,
I didn't play this week, and I heard it was concussion.
That's as much as I actually know about the situation.
Now I can tell you this, it ain't good.
Speaker 5 (30:39):
Whatever it is.
Speaker 2 (30:40):
He's not here at the facility, and I'm not sure
if he showed up at the facility. If he has
not shown up at the facility, then it is definitely
not good.
Speaker 4 (30:47):
Showed up yesterday. He showed up yesterday, but it's still
I don't think he was one hundred percent cleared concussion
protocol and all that. I think they sent him home.
From what I was being told there the other question,
you know, I don't know. I mean, I don't know
if you'd say we're like great friends or whatever. I
don't know. Every time he mf's me, every time he
(31:10):
sees me, that's my friend. But this is what I'll
say about about Darren. I'll answer this part. I was,
oh god. It was probably second or third year working
for the Cowboys, might have been two thousand and one,
and it was a training camp. Joe Avazana was singing
up at some bar in which it's all falls and
(31:32):
I remember talking to you there. You know, it was
just who was just one night out and wichitall whatever.
And I remember talking to you and you were asking
questions like so you worked for the team or your
media or whatever, and I was kind of explaining a
little bit no player did. No player cares. Players don't
really know the difference between your mediator in the locker room,
you're not you're with us. Who knows who cares? You
(31:52):
were kind of asking questions, and I just remember that
you always were that way, where like you always treated
every person like a person, not just well he's media
or whatever. You just treat people the way.
Speaker 5 (32:04):
Yeah, we're regular folks. I just played a game.
Speaker 2 (32:07):
I mean, it's no different than and I guess in
my life, I've always been inquisitive too, man, And that's
the reason why I'm in the business, why I'm in
the commercial real estate, is that I'm I've always been
inquisitive to understand who's who am I working with one.
I'm going to see you every day, and you know,
I'm going to have my good days in my bad days,
(32:28):
just like anyone else. Just I'm no different than anyone else.
But I just want to know and get to know
people that I'm going to see every single day.
Speaker 5 (32:36):
Now why wouldn't I want to know?
Speaker 4 (32:38):
Well, you're just the most humble, humble superstar player that
I've ever seen. I mean seriously, because and I joke
about it all the time. Is that like you kind
of know the lay of the land here. There's one
side of the building is all cowboys and then the
other side is commercial businesses. And your office is over there,
was over there right still It is okay because I
(32:59):
know y'all we're talking about moving it. But this guy's
he can go anywhere he wants and he knows it,
but he doesn't. He's like he'll call me. He's called
me before, like hey, can you escort me over here?
Speaker 5 (33:09):
And I'm like, your.
Speaker 4 (33:11):
Name is on the floorda yeah, man, But you don't
ever act like that. You don't ever act like you're
five time pro bowler that's in the Ring of Honor
and is going to be in the Hall of Fame.
Speaker 5 (33:22):
I just you know what that means. Man. That's my mama.
My mom used to found it.
Speaker 4 (33:26):
Chris, Chris, Chris is finding this big running back for
I think you found it.
Speaker 6 (33:30):
D D.
Speaker 5 (33:31):
Duck There you go, that's it.
Speaker 6 (33:33):
D J.
Speaker 4 (33:34):
Duckett A six four Michigan State.
Speaker 2 (33:37):
You got to understand our locker room is back there, yeah,
from Michigan State, and our locker room back there at Dion,
Kevin Smith and all these guys. And we would watch
film and we would see like the opposing team and
the duck it was running guys over all the time,
and they're looking at me like, what you're gonna do?
What what you're gonna do? Like and you know there
ain't no again, you can't. You got to stick your
(33:57):
chest up and show that you're gonna show up.
Speaker 4 (33:59):
Hey. Now, if there was a T. J. Duckett for
the All Storyline Team, it's this next caller here right,
Sergeant Sue in fort Worth. All right, guns.
Speaker 18 (34:09):
Magee here, hey, at ease, everybody.
Speaker 13 (34:12):
Nick, how you doing, brother?
Speaker 4 (34:13):
I'm good man? How you doing them?
Speaker 12 (34:15):
You're doing great?
Speaker 18 (34:15):
Woody?
Speaker 15 (34:16):
How are you?
Speaker 7 (34:16):
Hey?
Speaker 6 (34:17):
Don't let them talk. Don't let them talk me up. Man,
I'm not a big guy.
Speaker 4 (34:20):
Nah, you're you're the king of this medium, though you
know you are.
Speaker 18 (34:24):
It's just great angles, great angles. But hey, first of all,
Woody Man, thank you so much for coming again on
the show. The YouTube chats blowing up.
Speaker 13 (34:33):
We all love you, man.
Speaker 18 (34:33):
We appreciate you. And you know you have a whole
army of storyliners in your corner. I'm not sure what
that means, but just so you know that you know
that's the.
Speaker 5 (34:42):
Truth, you know.
Speaker 18 (34:43):
And and yes, sir, yes, sir, my question for you,
and I know we touched on it a little bit,
and this is something that I talked to you before,
and I mentioned that I played safety like yourself. I
was very close to going the NFL, except I was
five to six, you know, so I.
Speaker 6 (34:56):
Didn't really make it. But my question for you is is.
Speaker 18 (34:59):
With with transitioning to his zone defense. I was trying
to explain to a lot of people and maybe I'm wrong,
and I'm not too proud to be to be corrected.
So when I was explaining it to people, I was
just talking about the eye discipline, you know, zone eyes
versus man eyes, and being able to see wide receivers
coming into your zone, wide receivers leaving your zone, communicating
(35:20):
when someone's leaving your zone into somebody else's zone, things
like that versus a man eyes. When you're kind of
watching the wide receiver's hips, you're trying to stay on
their hips, watching their eyes, washing their hands can you
kind of explain the difference between the two for maybe
linebackers and defensive backs and kind of explain why it's
stricty transitioning even for professionals. I'll take your call off.
I'll take your answer off the call.
Speaker 2 (35:39):
Thank you have so much, Thank you perfect. I mean
you just described as such. I think you know better
than anybody. When you're playing man to man, that's your
guy and you're locked in on his hips. You're trying
to figure out where he's going to break. Is it
inside or is it outside. You're doing the count in
your head like you're covering him. Man, demand one thousand
and one, one thousand and two. That ball better be
out at one one thousand and three, right, So you're
(36:01):
trying to anticipate breaks. That is Manda, Man, he is
your guy. You get beat. That's on you zone. Totally
different zone is My eyes are more focused on the
quarterback and being able to pass off players. When players
in my zone and he interns another one, you pass
(36:21):
them off. You stay stay putt with My eyes are
directly trying to focus on the quarterback at all time.
Speaker 4 (36:28):
How much did Dion ever play zone?
Speaker 2 (36:30):
Not much, dude, you know what I came in the league.
We played two coverages before Dion even got here. We
played what we call Cover four, which is like kind
of man zone, a little bit, a little mix. Uh,
and then we played Cover one. Yeah, we didn't play
Cover two. I didn't play Cover two until years the
year seven or eight in my in my career. Dion
(36:51):
came in and we try to play a little Cover
four and didn't work. We had to play Manda Man
and that's what we were, a Manda Man team.
Speaker 5 (36:58):
That's funny.
Speaker 4 (37:00):
Dean could play man and zone at the same time
because he would bait his receiving Yeah he would. He
would like, you know, trail they so he can get
a play.
Speaker 2 (37:11):
Yeah, so he could get a play. I mean he
used to watch this guy. I mean, man, just you
talk about just being a phenomenal you know, God made
Deon Sanders play cornerback.
Speaker 5 (37:21):
Yeah he did. He's like, hey, man, Jesu, this is
what you do in baseball and baseball right.
Speaker 2 (37:25):
But but at the cornerback position, he had the best hands.
And you always measure an athlete by great hands, great feet.
Speaker 5 (37:32):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (37:32):
And people don't realize how strong he was at the
line of scrimmage. I mean, Dion was a strong football player,
but when he played the game, he was smart. He
you know, study his butt off and do all the
little things. But he was gifted. He had a gift
to play that position. But you know, watching him prepare
week in and week out, man, it was phenomenal. I
(37:53):
was one of those guys that used to just admire
Hi because all you hear about is Prime Time and
see on Monday, you know him putting this time man good.
Speaker 4 (38:00):
That's awesome. Okay, we got a chance for a couple
more calls here, Rick in Massachusetts. Rick, what's up?
Speaker 15 (38:06):
Hey, Nick? How you doing good?
Speaker 5 (38:08):
Man got with this?
Speaker 15 (38:12):
Yeah, what's up, Boddy? How are you doing great?
Speaker 5 (38:14):
Man doing great?
Speaker 15 (38:16):
Yeah? As far as said that, the uh Cowboys nation
and storyliners believe you're you're in the Hall of Fame.
I know you'll get there soon, but uh we all
agree that you know you're in the Hall of fame
as far as we're concerned.
Speaker 5 (38:32):
Well, thank you. I appreciate that you got a question.
Speaker 15 (38:38):
Yeah, no, just call and talk. But uh talk to
Buddy and you Nick and everything. But keeping with everything
going and I'll talk to you guys later.
Speaker 4 (38:49):
Thanks. Appreciate. All right, We're gonna keep it rolling now.
Josh in Chicago, Josh, what's up?
Speaker 16 (38:55):
Hey, guys? What are you good to talk to you?
Thanks for being here. I was actually giving Nick a
hard time a couple of sco saying when's what are
you going to be back?
Speaker 5 (39:02):
Right?
Speaker 4 (39:03):
That's right man.
Speaker 16 (39:04):
I was trying to get on here so bad today.
I was like, if I don't get to talk to Woody,
I'm going to be so.
Speaker 4 (39:08):
Upsetsh you pulled some strings, you got it working.
Speaker 16 (39:11):
Yeah, thanks, thanks for being with us. And I'll just
echo what everyone says when the Hall of Fame announcement comes.
Please you know something somehow NFL has to do it
on this show for you, you know, like that's what's
got to really happen.
Speaker 4 (39:21):
What's weird is that you're gonna know right now? The
way it is like that, I don't know how well
they find out. They kind of tell you beforehand, right
a little bit or.
Speaker 2 (39:31):
Okay, So what's the they do? They show up at
the house. I've been watching them show up at Guy's house.
So the guys I know. Eric Allen didn't know. Last year,
he and I talked a lot. He had no idea.
Speaker 4 (39:41):
But but when you go up like this year the
Super Bowls in San Francisco.
Speaker 5 (39:44):
Oh you can't.
Speaker 2 (39:44):
Yeah, you already know, you already know before you get there. Yeah,
but there was a problem be able to tell.
Speaker 4 (39:48):
Me whether or not I should get my fight.
Speaker 16 (39:50):
Or hopefully you'll have one.
Speaker 4 (39:54):
I'm going, man, I'm doing.
Speaker 2 (39:56):
That's probably why they won't put me, because you know
I'm a blast and I'll put it on all social A.
Speaker 4 (40:01):
Great day though, that's going to be a party. I
cannot wait for you to come in. This isn't gold,
This is kind of brownish. I can't wait for you
to come in here with with Are you not gonna
wear your gold because you're so humble, You're not ever
going to do that?
Speaker 5 (40:13):
Wear it everywhere. I'm wear it everywhere. Man, I almost
go show up.
Speaker 6 (40:16):
You know.
Speaker 2 (40:16):
I saw Drew Pearson were here. Is everywhere for the
first nine months.
Speaker 16 (40:21):
Yeah, it's gonna be Brian Broadest at the airport too, right,
Brian Brodis is going to see it on Twitter and
he's gonna be the one blowing it up to everyone.
Speaker 4 (40:29):
All right, Josh, if you got a question for Woody,
let's do it quick.
Speaker 16 (40:32):
Yes, sir, so, I actually so the question occup at
light today. The question that I asked Nick yesterday was
over the the past weekend with the homecoming game and everything.
Who is somebody that you really like seeing in a
good conversation you had. And also if you got any
Doll Parcels or Antonio Bryant stories, I think those would
be cool to hear. I've read the book.
Speaker 14 (40:54):
Yeah, yeah, that.
Speaker 5 (40:56):
Was a great one.
Speaker 3 (40:57):
Man.
Speaker 2 (40:57):
You know, he's crazy. You forget, I forget about the story.
And I just saw ab about three four months ago
at the barbershop. He's doing well doing the straight it
owns a little business. He's doing well, very well. So
I was there when when that happened, when the when
uh Antonio threw his jersey, And it was crazy because
he threw his jersey at Coach Parcels and and I
(41:18):
don't think he I don't think he meant to throw
it at coach parts. I think he threw it, meant
to throw it and act and it hit Parcels. And
Parcels will tell you. He used to always tell me.
He says, hey, Woodson, I got one fight left to me,
and I'm saving it for your ass. That's what he'd
always say to me. Right, But Parcels is, you know,
he's a Jersey guy. He's tough. He got that you know,
a little tough man about him. And he had no
(41:39):
back down, he had zero. Like he got so old pissed.
I mean the jersey hit him. I think I think
Ab wasn't throwing a jersey at him. I think he
was trying to throw it and it hit him and
they had to pull Parcels charged him, they had to
pull him back. But it was it was funny and
it all happened. It was one reason why it happened.
It was because of Keishawn Johnson. Oh great, was the
(42:00):
reason why it happened. Ab was getting all the routes
on scout team. Everybo he ran a nine route, he
had to come back as a starter and and then
run a route again. And Keith Shan and some of
the older guys didn't want to get those routes, and
and Ab was walking back, running back, and he was like, man,
somebody else get me, and those guys didn't come in.
And then that's when he got pissed off, and and
(42:20):
just just the snowball from there.
Speaker 5 (42:22):
But I look, man, Ab was a dude. Man he was.
Speaker 4 (42:25):
He was talent these other ad like he really had
he was, man, yeah it all you know, just you
gotta yeah, it's gonna be everything, you know, everything and everything.

To Cowboys storyline presented by Gillette, the official shave of
the Dallas Cowboys.
Speaker 4 (44:29):
All right back here on Cowboys storyline presented by Gillette. Boy,
it was great to get Darren Woodson on the show today.
He's got so much, so much wisdom, so much uh uh.
He's great with philosophy when it comes to football, but
also he breaking it down x's and those talking about
zone defenses and things like that. So so great. Uh,
it's good to hear from you guys as well. We
(44:50):
had Uh we had a few calls uh today, I
know not as many because Darren, you know, was here
and we wanted to hear a lot from him. Big
game this week Denver, I mean this is where the
Cowboys can can really kind of take advantage of the schedule. Uh,
these are winnable games. I mean Denver's they won eight
(45:10):
in a row at home. They're five and two this year.
If you see that game last week against the Giants,
should have lost. Everyone knows that. But but they're winning.
They're finding a way to win games. They had a
lot of close games this year and so that they're
winning some of them. Some of them they haven't. But
but this it'll be it'll be that kind of game
I would imagine. I think the Cowboys can can score
some points on anybody. They're just gonna have to get
(45:32):
get stops, figure out a way to get stops. It'll
be a lot tougher to cover those receivers than it
was against Washington. They got more talent there in Denver.
But you know, bow Knicks is a runner. He's a
guy that you that you certainly have to to, you know,
watch when he gets out of the backfield. And also
they have designed runs for him, so it'll you know,
they haven't won. I was going to say this to
(45:53):
to Woody. They haven't won in Denver since Darren Woodson
was a rookie nineteen ninety two. That's how long it's been.
Now we're talking about Darren going into the Hall of Fame.
But they haven't won since then, and so they haven't played.
Of course, they haven't play every year. They haven't won
at all since nineteen ninety five they beat Denver at home.
(46:13):
It's been thirty years. So then they've beaten the Broncos.
So maybe this will be the year to turn things around.
The Cowboys certainly need to figure out a way to
do that. See if they can get some defensive stops.
We'll see what's going on with tray Von Diggs. See
if he returns to practice this week. All right. For
Chris Beam, I'm Nick Eatman, and for Darren Woodson, been
a lot of fun here on Cowboys storyline. We'll see
(46:34):
you next time.
Speaker 1 (46:35):
This has been a production of Dallascowboys dot Com and
