There's the regular calendar that we use and have used
all our lives, but there's the NFL calendar, and we
know how it goes. And then Defending the Kingdom we
just kind of follow that NFL calendar. All of the
excitement in that time of year, and that time of year,
at this time of year is the reveal of the schedule.
In this edition of Defending the Kingdom, we reveal to

you the sixty sixth schedule of the franchise that started
as the Dallas Texans and since nineteen sixty three has
been the Kansas City Chiefs. And it's all brought to
you by Ticketmaster. Let's teach it on an RPO at
the five, it's a lead plot.

City. How everyone, I'm told this voice of the Chiefs,
and I am joined by senior team reporter Matt McMullen.
We're on let's say location here, Matt, in our practice facility.
We have been a show to other locations, but I
thought only appropriate then on the announcing what the sixty

six team in our franchise history will face is what
a very interesting schedule, maybe the most interesting schedule in
franchise history, I'd bring a friend with me, So I
brought Patrick Mahomes with me. Those of you who are
just listening and not viewing, I've got Pat reaching for
the pylon against the Colts back in a glorious playoff
victory in twenty eighteen. It was Pat's first playoff victory.

And of course we know he's seventeen and four, the
most successful quarterback in NFL history in the postseason in
his first twenty one games. So Matt, that being said,
we have the schedule and we're going to unveil it
here in a second. But first overall, well let's use this.
Let's go around the world.

Well I was going to ask that the title of
this episode, is it What major holidays will Mitch and
Matt be spending together in twenty twenty five?

Speaker 2 (01:53):
This is the life we've chosen.

Speaker 1 (01:55):
That'll be one that I don't pick. We're scheduled on
maybe we are, and I think who lewis scheduled a
very pre season game and we're on that at the
fourth of July, and we're going to be playing in
Iceland in recent and maybe a few for the fans,
I think they know about that one.

Speaker 3 (02:11):
I heard about a doubleheader as well on New Year's
Eve and New Year's Day. That's in the works. We'll
see if that comes to fruition. But yes, around the.

Speaker 1 (02:18):
World streaming partner we're in. I mean, that's just what
we do. We're want to help those streaming partners of
the league as much as we can.

Speaker 3 (02:25):
Again, this is the life that we've chosen. It's a
good problem to have. People want to watch the Chiefs
of national television. So we're going to go on national
television on major holidays.

Speaker 1 (02:34):
By the way, with this sixty sixth schedule, we wore
our Hank Stram shirts today. We did. You got to commemorate.
We feel like we're back in nineteen sixty three when
the Chiefs had just moved here to Kansas City from
being the Dallas Texas and you'll see this Chief football
on the pictures of Hank Stram and his hats and
the shirts the coaches wore. So Matt and I thought

only fitting on the schedule reveal for the twenty twenty
five season, that we would bring a little heat to
the podcast.

And I think Hank Stram would be pretty fired up
about playing the Cowboys in Dallas with the chance to
beat them on Thanksgiving. So yeah, let's do it for
Hank Stram. So we have a busy day to day,
so just one quick around the world. So I hosted
an event over at the Stadium with Trent Green, Jamal Charles,
and Dante Hall last week. It was super cool because obviously,

as you know, those are not just three Chiefs legends,
but three of like the greatest guys like you'll ever meet.

They're all incredible and.

Speaker 1 (03:28):
This way, that's taking you back to your oh yeah, childhood. Yeah,
we got three of your heroes.

Speaker 3 (03:36):
I mean, Trent Green and Dante Hall were on the
Chiefs teams that I grew up watching. Then of course
Jamal was on the teams. That was like, you know,
my teenage years really getting into football, like hanging out
with those guys And obviously I love them as players,
but to get to know them and for them to
be like awesome people is that much sweeter. So it's
cool hanging out with them. But at the event, there
was like fifty people from around the country and I

met Rex.

Rex came up and talked to me for a while. Uh.

Speaker 3 (04:02):
He a big Chiefs fan, and we talked to Chief
Football for a little bit and he was awesome. So Rex,

So in my haste, I don't know.

I don't know if I actually scribbled down where he's from.
I scribbled something down that I don't quite understand why
I wrote this. Uh, So I don't quite know where
he's from. So Rex, when I see you again, let

camp like three years ago, we met people from Azerbaijan.

Joe at training camp.

Well, I love it. One of our DTK Kingdom defenders,
Paul Hansen, who is just enthralled with every episode, comes
up to me where was this at? But it was
a casual acquaintance and he goes, ohe i ohei was
oe I, thank you so much for educating us on OEI. Paul, Sure,
I told you at the time, OEI is going to

get very real here for the Chiefs in twenty twenty five,
because that's the twenty three sovereign states, basically Spanish speaking,
Portuguese speech speaking, and Captain Leese catales I said that
right anyway, Catalan Catalan Catalan catalog, eastern Eastern Spain. Right,
So anyway, I said, Paul, this is going to get

real real OEI. And yes, part of rookie mini camps
all kind of come together in one big world. But
an exciting schedule, a demanding schedule, a compelling schedule. There's
just a lot to this. And let's just start with
the opener with this sixty sixth season. And we began

this way.

Yep, flagged you like that. That's cool. Why do you
have that though?

Speaker 1 (06:05):
Honestly it ties into Chief's history because and he's still
in the league amazingly. Cairo Santos, who's just a terrific
young man and was a good kicker for the Chiefs.
He injured a groin. He was the first Brazilian born
NFL player, and he was with us in twenty fourteen,
and honestly, everywhere we went Matt on the road, there

(06:29):
was a large contingent of Brazilian fans that love the NFL,
but that love Cairo and he was representing, of course,
his nation, a Portuguese speeching speaking nation member of the OEI.
And so we'll play our first game of the twenty
season full of Brazil. But we had this when I

(06:49):
had Cairo Santos on the Kingdom Show.

Speaker 3 (06:52):
Yeah, for those just listening, Mitch is holding up a
Brazilian flag because you're playing in Brazil. Yes, a Brazilian flag,
but sorry, continue, So I try to have the flag.

Speaker 1 (07:01):
It's one of the things I try to keep the
flag of all the nations in my office, so you know,
it's cat a quite a collection. But anyway, with our
ever increasing appearances now in foreign countries, and we do
have a German flag up and where I spend my
time here at the practice facility. But Week one and

(07:23):
we will go to South Paulo, Brazil, and first time
we've been in the South American continent to play an
NFL game. And we'll play the Chargers in Week one
on a Friday night game, which is kind of turned
into another deal that the NFL has done. We know
that defending world champions, We've done it the two years
prior to this one start on Thursday night. The Eagles
get that now by being Super Bowl fifty nine champions.

(07:45):
But now the league has started a major kind of
new field international game on the Friday after the opening Thursday.
And so it's in Brazil again and the Chiefs will
play the Chargers. Thoughts, I'm going through Brazil to play
a football game and to play the Chargers.

Speaker 3 (08:05):
Well, so I love traveling and i love seeing new places.
So I'm actually pretty excited about this, just to go
to a new place and to see the Chiefs play
football in South America. Years ago, just growing up a
Chiefs fan, I never thought I'd see the Chiefs play
on all these different continents, and it's cool we get
to go along for the ride.

Speaker 2 (08:23):
I have a few notes about this.

Speaker 3 (08:25):
So this will be the fourth country outside of the
United States the Chiefs will have played a regular season
game in, so not including like the American Bowl stuff
in Japan or any of that from years ago, but
just regular season games the Chiefs have played already in Mexico, Germany,
the United Kingdom and now Brazil, it's four countries. When
the Chiefs take the field in Brazil, they'll be the

(08:46):
first team to ever play in four separate countries. Now
the Dolphins, I think will actually pass us later in
the year because they're playing in Ireland and Spain, but
at least for a little while, will be the first
team and the only team to have done that. And
then we'll also be the only team to play in
three different countries outside of North America, so throughout Canada
throughout Mexico will be the only team to have played

(09:09):
three regular season games in NFL history outside of North America. Again,
the Dolphins will pass us later in the year, but
will be the first team to do that, which I
think is pretty cool. I think this is the sort
of thing Lamar Hunt would have absolutely loved to have,
not just NFL players and NFL games that mean something
taking place overseas, but his team, the Chiefs, are the
one that are brand ambassadors for the NFL and for

(09:32):
our sport. I think it's pretty cool. So says a
lot about what the league thinks of the Chiefs and
thinks of this franchise. And let's go start the season
with the w hopefully in South Polo.

Speaker 1 (09:43):
There were rumors five years ago that the NFL was
going to expand on a consistent basis in Brazil, and
we've seen what the league has done in Western Europe, right.
It's a staple now in the UK and becoming so
in Germany. Well. Now all of a sudden in the
South American continent, it's being that with the country of
Brazil hosting these games now and presumably on a consistent basis,

(10:07):
and this Friday after the Thursday is starting to become
a deal now in Week one in the National Football League.
But we're also on a fast track to have a
everybody's going to play an international game every year. When
the seventeen game schedule was set up, it gets clunky
because you're hosting nine on the road eight. It's not
an even symmetric thing, but an eight eight to one

(10:31):
certainly is. Or when you get to a nine to
nine or you get to an eighteen game schedule, and
so it's we're getting there. But for the Chargers, someone
think it's a competitive advantage just because they have not
beaten the Chiefs in the state of California, whatever venue
they've been in since Andy Reid's first year in twenty thirteen,

(10:52):
and that was the Chiefs backups playing the Chargers and
nearly won the game on a Cairo I'm sorry, Ryan
Suckup missed a forty one year field goal. Well, the
Chiefs backups would have beaten the Chargers. Then in San Diego,
that's the last time the Chargers won and beat the
Chiefs in the state of California. And that's we through
San Diego, the move Parson for a while and in

(11:15):
SOFI stadiums. So there have been some classic games, overtime games. Wow,
the Chiefs have dominated Sin's twenty thirteen. So for the Chargers, like,
let's just change the scenery year, so let's go to
Brazil and let's host the Chiefs. So there's some there's
some impact and a lot of ways to look at
this week one game in South America.

Speaker 3 (11:37):
Yeah, it'll be tough for both teams. Just the circumstances
are weird. Obviously, it's a long flight for both teams.
For US, it's like thirteen hours or something going straight there.
The good news is it's different than like a European game,
or if the Chiefs are going to Australia or Asia
or something where it's pretty much directly south. So I
think it's like a two hour time difference, which isn't

(11:59):
too big of a deal. So a long flight, but
at least there's no like jet lag involved where you
feel like you're playing in the middle of the night,
So I think that's a positive. I mean again, I
think we're fortunate that we have a lot of this
international experience too, because our athletic trainers and our doctors
and our coaches know how to handle these kind of
things really, really well. The Chiefs have never lost a

(12:20):
regular season international game. They're three to oh and if
they can be four and oh after this Chargers game,
they would match the Vikings for the most wins without
a loss of any team on the international stage. So
our team knows what they're doing when it comes to
these kind of games, and that gives me confidence, even
though this is kind of a weird situation that we
can get the job done.

Speaker 1 (12:40):
It is taxing an entire organization, Chargers included here. But
let's just take the Chiefs, the equipment staff that they are,
the athletic training staff, and think of this. They just
have moved our operations back less than a month prior
to that from Saint Joseph, which is also taxing. But

(13:02):
this is a chore and you sign on for it,
I get it. But for fans can just turn on
the game and it appears this is a YouTube lide game,
so we've got another way of viewing this game, and
a looks like it's free YouTube live, which will be yeah, phenomenon.

(13:22):
But the point is this creates a ton of work
and a ton of science and a ton of research. Now,
the good thing is there is no game preceding this game,
and the international travel throughout the year is very difficult,
especially if you play on the road before you play
that international game. We saw this happen two years ago

(13:45):
when we went to Denver and then had to go
to Germany, and I did the research. You can follow
this up. I'm not updated that research, but the winning
percentage of teams on the road before they go to
the international game is less than forty percent. And the
reason is there's so many distractions for the entire organization

(14:06):
on the football side to get ready basically for two
weeks at one time. Now that won't be the case
with week one. However, you will have this team, the
Chiefs on the move because they go to a third
party spot for training camp, moved back a couple of
weeks the preseason games, and then head to Brazil on

(14:27):
the fifth of September. It will be a Friday night,
five September. And we started this with the seventeen game schedule.
Used to be the NFL would break down. You could
easily look at it in quarters because of sixteen games
divided by four quarters. Not so much with the seventeen
game schedule. And I think where the Chiefs have been,
especially the last year being seven straight games in the

(14:49):
seven straight years in the AFC Championship game in NFL record,
by the way, it almost I think we've lived being
in thirds. So in Matt, you and I have talked
about this a lot. It becomes a a six six'
five if you, Will and that five is a fight
to the finish because it's all In, december basically After.
Thanksgiving so let's take the rest of the first third

(15:12):
of the. Schedule after the. Team The chiefs will play
The chargers In, brazil then they'll have the home, opener
but the home opener just happens to be the rematches
a rematch Of Super bowls fifty seven and fifty, nine and, Yes,
matt it is a rematch of Also Super bowl fifty
seven that we seem to have. Forgotten maybe in the

(15:32):
land of brotherly love did they forget that? Game, anyway
it seems to me like it's one to. One but
here we. Go we're gonna play The eagles in the
home opener in a Late sunday afternoon, game which would
be The week two, game and a rematch Of Super
bowl fifty nine and fifty.

Speaker 3 (15:48):
Seven, yeah it's funny how Super bowl fifty seven has
kind of just been forgotten about.

Speaker 1 (15:54):
Here but you, know oh we did play and win.

Speaker 3 (15:58):
Though, listen The eagles great last year they won The Super.
Bowl you, know we move we move on The. Chiefs
The chiefs have won Three Super bowls in the last
six years, too so we move. ON i like starting
out early with that game, though for a lot of,
reasons and the same can be said for The ravens
game In week, four because those are tough games against

(16:18):
teams that know each other very. Well and we've seen
in the past where it's a long, season, right you
might have some injuries and you have a game against
The eagles or The ravens looming in like week, twelve
and it's, like, man that's and it's on a short
week or something. LIKE i like getting these games out
of the way In september when the teams are healthy

(16:39):
and The chiefs are always so good out of the,
Gate SO i like having The eagles game early. EARLY
i also like having The ravens game early. Early it
reminds me of last, year you, know starting Against baltimore
and Having cincinnati In week. Two it was, like, man
that's a tough. Start but if we can get through
that first couple of games undefeated or one to one or,
whatever we're going to set ourselves up for a great.

(17:01):
Season and it's the same thing with, This, like if
you can start strong against The chargers and beat The
eagles In week, two they're going to feel great about
the rest of the year and where you're.

Speaker 2 (17:11):
Headed so it's a tough, start but this is the.

Speaker 3 (17:13):
Reality when you're a team like The, chiefs it's going
to play a first play schedule every single. Year you're
going to have to play tough, games and in my,
Opinion i'd rather play those tough games early on in the.
Season when you're healthy and your body isn't hurting too,
much not playing off a short, week and you can
get after these.

Speaker 1 (17:27):
Guys, yeah and so both The eagles And chiefs will
have a bit of an extended time before Because eagles
will open On thursday. Night we'll play On friday. Night
now we'll get kind of wiped out on that flight
home because that'll wipe Out saturday basically with the thirteen
or fourteen hour flight that you had going north to,
south south and north on the return. Flight The, eagles,

though we'll play on the Opening thursday, Night so both
of these teams will have ample. Time it's not like
you're playing The eagles on a short. Week and that's
a little bit your. Point, NOW i hope you have
your night goggles for this first third of the schedule
because The chiefs will be somewhat nocturnal in these, games

and the fact that The chiefs now have become we
joked about, streaming But Monday Night football wants The. Chiefs
Sunday night football wants The. Chiefs The fox AND cbs
when they get an exclusive, window which they take turns
getting that three twenty Five sunday, window they want The.
Chiefs it's not. Arrogance the league has admitted. It Mike

north admitted. It like The eagles pull a, number, right
and So I'm i'm, sorry The chiefs pull a. Number
so The chiefs pull a. Number let's put them in
there every slot we can. Find that's the feel of
this actually throughout this whole, schedule but this first third
is definitely that way because the next game is a bit.
Surprising but It's sunday night football in The meadowlands at
The New York. Giants now here's your, Note Chiefs kingdom

for this. Game The chiefs have never beaten The giants
In New, york not that we play them a, lot
but The chiefs are over In New york against The
giants in sixty six. Seasons so this is a chance
On Sunday night football in week three to get rid
of that goose. Egg that's.

Crazy when you told me that, YESTERDAY i couldn't believe.
IT i, mean like you, SAID i, know we don't
play them a whole lot In New, york but, still
like of all, team it's just random to. Me but you,
know there's the first time for, Everything so hopefully we

the last time we were, there we lost to that

not all of It's sunday night football On Monday night.

Football but we'll talk about The thanksgiving length game, later
The christmas, game the game In brazil counts to all,
this but half your schedule is. Standalone it's, again if
you would have talked to us ten years, ago like
half the chief schedule is going to be either in
primetime or a standalone game when there's no other games going,
On i'm not SURE i would have believed.

You, yeah and by the. WAY i forgot to mention,
historically the first Ever texans, game going back to the
first franchise year was at The, chargers so it wasn't In,
brazil but it was The chargers and on the road.
Essentrally and then the First Kansas city year nineteen sixty
three with The, chiefs their home opener wasn't Until october the.

Eighth WHAT i think they had conflicts at The Kansas
city baseball team at the. Time home opener, everybody and
we have a, month So i'll get your. Tickets and
the week before they played The chargers on the road
before they played at home their home opener On october the,
eighth nineteen sixty. Three all, right let's just get into

more of this after The sunday night football. Game, oh
let's see it's a rematch two years AGO Afc championship,
game because here come The Baltimore ravens with the next,
game Another sunday afternoon game where these games have all been.

Classics yeah, AGAIN i like Getting baltimore early in the,
season same situation as last. YEAR i felt the same
way going Into week one last year Against, baltimore Like
baltimore is really good you're going to have to play
them at some, point and they're going to be a tough.
Game i'd rather play them In september than have that
game looming on the calendar in week thirteen or. Fourteen

we'll play them whenever we have to play, them but
IF i had my, CHOICE i like playing them In
september because you'll be, healthy you'll be fired, up ready to,
go the weather will be. Nice like it's just, CONDUCIVE i,
think to your best. Performance and also if you have
to see him again in the, PLAYOFFS i prefer not
having to play them twice in like a month or
a month and a, half you, know like we've done

before with some teams Like cincinnati And. Houston so, YEAH
i mean it's tough playing a team Like baltimore this
early in the, year but you're gonna have to play
them at some, Point and IF i had my, PICK
i like playing them in week.

Yeah another in this schedules. Incredible now we keep your
night gla all goggles on or borrow them from your,
dad because now we're because this, year in the twenty
twenty five, season every three, years you'll play an ENTIRE
afc division other than yours in addition to. Yours so
IT'S Efc south this. Year so we go To, jacksonville

but It's monday night football In. Jacksonville and again one
of those where you kind of emoji think up another,
sky because you wouldn't take A giants game would be
A sunday night football. Game and it's interesting to me
That jacksonville is A monday night game In.

Jacksonville you, know there's some excitement around, THEM i think
With Travis hunter going to be In jacksonville. Now BUT
i think the timing of this game is a major
blessing that people might not. Realize we've had to Play
jacksonville before at noon In, september like Early, september and
there are a few places On EARTH i Think i'd

not want to be more Than jacksonville in Early september
in the middle of the.

Day it is brutally hot and.

Humid and we had that game a couple of years
ago there where we were doing field pass and it
was like the surface of the. Sun LIKE i think
the game against The dolphins where it was twenty below
was more comfortable than it was In jacksonville when it
was like one hundred and ten. Degrees that's, debatable but
it's rough and you don't really think about it because,
it's you, know just hot In, florida but it's. Miserable

so to have that game In, october Early october and at,
night it's probably going to be really, pleasant which is
a major benefit BECAUSE i think it's a competitive advantage
for The. Jags they're playing that all the time that
when a team comes in and it's just like brutally
hot and, humid they're used to it and you're. Not
at LEAST i think this kind of levels the playing

field where we'll go in, there it's going to be
a beautiful night most, likely and we don't have to
worry about the. Heat that's one of the major GAMES
i had circled WHEN i was looking forward to the,
schedule is when is That jacksonville, game because it'd be
our luck would be like week one or week, two
And i'm glad it's. NOT i Think october and at
night is perfect for.

That, yeah and this has been up and down. Historically
there remember The Sammy Watkins balooza where he had over
two hundred yards. Receiving that was kind of, fun but
some not so. FUN i Remember Maurice jones drew like
having the time of his life against us. There and
you have just broken news in the fact that THE
nfl is looking to, expand of course even more so

across our. Planet when our planet is, covered they're going
to move to other planets in The Solar system them
and they're looking At. Mercury, wow.
