Speaker 1 (00:00):
What's up Dolphins is juice and Big Seth. You're listening
to the Dolphin UK podcast and Juice. I can't wait
to dive in. Let's go on, Jeep Stevens take them
(00:29):
away way around. Hello, Welcome to the Dolphin UK Podcast.
We are back, unfortunately not to review a victory, but
(00:51):
we will talk about the game versus and your Jets.
We will also give some thoughts on Chris. Creator Mike
McDaniels presser for the end of the season. We're going
to recap some team awards that we're given out. But
firstly I have to introduce my co host Simon. How
are you doing, Simon?
Speaker 2 (01:10):
Yeah, not too bad. Consideringly, I have a feeling that
the old clip that we used to use when we
were two and six, Hello Darkness, my old friend might
be appearing in the show at some point.
Speaker 1 (01:24):
It might be making a reappearance. Yeah, but let's start
off on a slightly brighter note because I prefer positivity
and do you want to take us through some of
the team awards that were.
Speaker 2 (01:37):
Given out in the last week yeap So, before the
game against the Jets, the Dolphins announced their team award
winners for the twenty twenty four regular season. Defensive tackle
Zac Seeder was voted the Dan Marino Most Valuable Player.
Defensive tackle Kalais Campbell earned the Don Shuler Leadership Award,
Linebacker Jalen Phillips was named the team's ed Block Block
(02:00):
Courage Award winner, and tackle Toront Armstead was honored with
the Natsmore Community Service Awards. They were the major award
winners league. Should we start with just talk about them
briefly and start with Zach Sina winning the Dan Marino
Most Valuable Player Award, which is an award voted on
by the South Florida media who cover the team, and
(02:23):
it's been named after Da Marino since year two thousand
and It reflects the achievements of the Hall of Fame
quarterback and twelve time MVP. A worthy winner. I think
he performed at such a high level of season, didn't he?
Speaker 1 (02:35):
Yeah? He did he? I mean probably.
Speaker 2 (02:39):
No.
Speaker 1 (02:39):
Bigger compliment is how much the team looked like they
missed him when he wasn't able to play those games
when he got poked in the eye, which sounded like
a horrendous, sorry, a horrendous and unfortunate injury to suffer
in training, but yeah, it just showed you the rest
of the time how important he was. And I think
they did a good job in the broadcast on Sunday
(03:01):
of pointing out the selfless work that Claires Campbell was
doing to help get sax Seela at Zack seina at a
sack and vice versa. And you just see that and
it plays in durially. But yeah, definitely a word he
went on. His play somehow has elevated from the great
play that we've seen throughout his time in Miyomi.
Speaker 2 (03:18):
And I think there weren't too many obvious candidates were
there this season, Unfortunately he was one. I think von
ah Chan was probably the standout player on the offensive
side of the ball, and that was kind of reflected
in Chris Greer's comments in the press that he delivered
yesterday when he wasn't very complimentary. And think about either
of those two forementioned players not being selected to the
(03:41):
Pro Bowl. So they were the two that stuck in
the forefront of his mind. And I think that's probably right,
isn't it.
Speaker 1 (03:48):
Yeah, absolutely, and both of those definitely deserved Pro Bowl spots.
But this is what happens when your team was struggling
through the season. I think it gets reflected in Pro
Bowl voting, and especially when it kicks off and you
are well under the five hundred mark. I think unfortunately
the players bear the brunt of it when it comes
to something like this, when you know it should be
awarded on individual performance, not necessarily in the team's overall record.
Speaker 2 (04:12):
So the Don Shuler Leadership Award was given to Clais Campbell,
which is voted on by the players and given to
the teammate who best exhibits leadership on and off the field.
I mean, he said a tremendous example. Hasn't he as
a player, as a leader, as a mentor, And it's
a shame we've only had him for a year. And
we'll touch on it later. I'm sure when we cover
(04:33):
Chris Grears and Mirke McDaniel's press conference and that he
was talked about was potentially coming back. But I'm certainly
a worthy winner of that leadership award.
Speaker 1 (04:41):
Yeah, absolutely, a tremendous addition. It looked like he enjoyed
his time with the team so far. Hopefully there's some
more to come and say, we'll talk about that a
little bit later, but yeah, definitely a worthy winner, and
I think we'd probably have done the same thing and
given to do so.
Speaker 2 (04:59):
Jane and Lips was the team's ed Block Courage Award winner,
which is selected by the Dolphins Athletic Training staff and
symbolizes professionalism, courage, and inspiration while also serving as a
role model in the South Florida community. Again, another worthy winner.
He's had another injury set back as we know, but
(05:21):
from what you see on social media, it's not let
him get but it's not let it beat him. He's
certainly fighting back to be roill to go for next season,
and I think confirmation he's confirmed he will be fit
for the start of the next season as well.
Speaker 1 (05:33):
Yeah, I mean yeah, I had to see see how
well he did to get himself back in contingent to
play this season and play in Week one. You know
the amount of hard work that went on there from
the training staff as well as Jadan Phillips himself. So yeah,
definitely again a worthy recipient of that award.
Speaker 2 (05:52):
And then finally the nat More Community Service Award was
given to Toronto Armstead, which is given annually to a
Miami Dolphins play recognized for his exemplary commitment to serving
the South Florida community. I mean, we're not too familiar
with the ins and outs of all the work they
do in the community. But the man's a professional and
(06:13):
a worthy winner. I'm sure of that award.
Speaker 1 (06:15):
Yeah, I think we've seen him before. I'm pretty sure
we've seen him pick up the award from the journalists
that they give out for being good with the journalists
as well. And like Toront seems like he's a consummate
professional in everything that he does, and I imagine that
he's working in the community is no different. So that
doesn't surprise me, want it?
Speaker 2 (06:38):
Yeah, I say they're the award winners for this year.
Speaker 1 (06:40):
So those the kind of guys that you want as
pillars of your organization, isn't it. You can see why
Toron Arms has been here so long and why it's
someone like Colletus Campbell's are highly respected and had the
career he had because he clearly puts in the work
in all facets.
Speaker 2 (06:56):
It's probably worth noting we'll be giving out our own
season awards in an upcoming show, won't we when we
do our end of season review, probably in the next
couple of weeks. But it'll be interesting to see what
players we've selected for each of the different awards ourselves.
Speaker 1 (07:09):
That's it. Prestigious awards.
Speaker 2 (07:12):
I think, yes, yeah, we need to We need to
create a little trophy, don't we. For the MVP of
Dolph u K podcast MVP of twenty twenty four is.
Speaker 1 (07:22):
It would be very interesting to see the reaction from
the players when they get delivered that trophy.
Speaker 2 (07:26):
Yeah, no, it is interesting, but a good quick story.
Back in the day Dolph and UK, the fan club
did have a trophy which was presented annually to their
their vote for team MVP. It was a tradition that
went on for a number of years, I believe, and
I can't recall why it came to a standstill, why
(07:47):
it stopped happening. Maybe the trophy got damaged or went missing,
but it was a trophy that was presented annually to
the team MVP. Admittedly not necessarily at the time like now,
but the following sea and when members were making trips
over they were able to present that award to a
particular player.
Speaker 1 (08:06):
Maybe we should restart that and we'll take one out
of us for the next season to present it. But
with that being said, I'm going to have to go there.
I'm sorry, but we're going to talk about Sunday's defeat
in New York against Jets, the one that brought the
season to a close. So I don't think we want
to cover it too much, as the performance and results
(08:29):
kind of speak for themselves. But tell me where it
went wrong.
Speaker 2 (08:35):
Well, first and foremost, the Broncos did their job, and
they did it well by beating the Chiefs to nil
in the end, So congrats to them they made the playoffs.
But for the Dolphins, I'm sure you agree, Lee, it
should never have got to that point in the first place,
in not being able to control their own destiny. We'll
discuss more on that in our end of season review,
of course, which I just mentioned is coming up over
(08:57):
the next week or two. But in terms of this
particulicular game and where it went wrong, I just think
the Dolphins didn't simply didn't fulfill their own part of
the equation at all. In most facets, the failure points
were not surprising I either performance or the backup quarterback,
failure to convert first and goals into touchdowns, being able
(09:17):
to deal with a pass rush behind a weeken o line,
and of course there was what four consecutive drives where
they turned the ball over as well, So I think
they are those failure points are pertinent in that they
are the kind of important areas that they were only
looking at heading into next season. Now, it's not all
(09:39):
how we wanted the season to end. They did well, however,
to get back from a two and six start to
go six and three the rest of the debt the way,
and it would have been seven and two had they
won that last game. But for me, the damage was
already done early and they just couldn't recover from it,
could they.
Speaker 1 (09:58):
No, like you say, the damage was done early. You
never want to be a positioned where you don't control
your own destiny. It was great to be in a
position where you were still potentially playing for a playoff
sport in week eighteen. I think that is still an
achievement based around everything that went on. But like you say,
(10:19):
it felt early in the game like things. You got
handed a bunch of opportunities on short fields and you
weren't able to convert them. Then the turnovers started to
come and the penalty started to come, and it felt
like it kind of snowballed, not quickly, but it's snowboled
kind of slowly into oh, this is the way this
(10:40):
is going to end. And I don't maybe that's just
the feeling you get as a fan watching it and
a fan reaction online, but it's that's kind of the
way it felt, is like, Hey, the opportunities were there.
This game could have kind of been over pretty early.
It felt like, you know, with the interception and the
short couple of short fields and not be able to
(11:01):
get punch it in in the red zone. You know,
I think set the tone for what was about to happen. Unfortunately.
Speaker 2 (11:10):
I think the tone was set as well by the
quick start of the Broncos as well, because the Jets
were very clever in terms of putting highlights of that
game on the big screen, where inevitably the Dolphins players
and stuff are going to see that. You just can't
avoid it. And psychologically that must have had an impact.
(11:31):
Seeing how quickly the Broncos were scoring on the on
the Chiefs, so inevitably that would have had a psychological
damage in some part to their performance on the field.
So that certainly didn't help.
Speaker 1 (11:45):
It doesn't help, but I mean, to be fair, if
you've been to hard Rock Stadium. You know that the
out of town scores are being shown during the between quarters,
and they're always on that smaller board around the kind
of mid section stage, Like that stuff is alway available
if you want to see it. I think coaches and
announcers that they say players don't pay attention, but that
(12:07):
would kind of make them inhuman, do you know what
I mean? Because we were all doing it. If you
were there, if you were at the game, you'd still
be doing Would you've been ignoring it just because there
was a game going. I don't know if it's that
easy to just not look at those scores when your
game depends so much on it, and it's not like football.
(12:31):
It's not like when Notting and Forest are playing. They
don't have time to stop and look a because they're
heading towards the top of the premier league. But also
because you know, when the Dolphins take the field, only
one half the team is playing it any one time,
or one third of the team. If you're looking at
it that way, you know one side of the ball,
so there's always opportunity to see it, you know, and
(12:53):
fans are not going to let you not know what's
going on either.
Speaker 2 (12:56):
Maybe you should. You should have said title chasing Notting
and Forest League.
Speaker 1 (13:00):
Hey, I'm just trying to pump you out. Dolphins may
not have been able to give you the season that
you hope, but not even Forest certainly are they are?
Speaker 2 (13:08):
They are. That's a story for another day. But how
many of us sat there with watching the Dolphins game
on the big screen on the TV and had the
Donver Kansas City game on our iPads? A lot many?
Probably we wouldn't they because it's human nature to want
to know what's going on in the other game.
Speaker 1 (13:25):
That's it. So I think it's you know, and I
think it's ironic because you know, you said the Jets
were smart for doing it to make sure that the
Dolphins know. But all it really did was hurt the
Jets as much as it hurt the Dolphins, because the
Dolphins could have won and not gone to the playoffs.
So all it did is what it had dropped the
(13:46):
Jets about four draft positions by winning the game. They
with a bunch of players it seems like very well
may not return, So I don't really know if it's
even in their favorite.
Speaker 2 (13:56):
Well, looking at the way the Jets played and credit
to them. They got off to a rocky start, but
ultimately played played okay, and Rogers went out if that
was his last game, then he went out with another
good performance against the Dolphins. I said when we played
them the first time. He likes playing against Miami, doesn't he?
Speaker 1 (14:13):
Yeah. I mean he had that great performance against in
a comeback win on Christmas Day, and his best two
games this season were against the Dolphins, So I mean
take for nap.
Speaker 2 (14:23):
So it wasn't to be. It wasn't to be in
the end, which is most disappointing. But it draws the
end to a up and down season, which we'll go into,
as I say in our season review, in a couple
of week or two, we'll do a further dive into
the ins and outs of the season. But shall we
end the season on a positive note and deliver some
(14:45):
Finns facts because we only normally deliver these when the
Dolphins have won, because there are plenty of facts to
share with the listeners, but there are some genuine end
of season facts that I think the listeners would benefit
from hearing because they're recognized the absolutely.
Speaker 1 (15:02):
So I'll kick off with some Johnny Smith facts from
the game Johnny called nine passes for fifty six yards,
averaging six point two yards per reception, and a four
yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to cut the New
York lead down to one possession. Smith's four yard reception
(15:24):
gave him sole possession of the Fanchise record for touchdown
receptions by a tight end. We spoke about this the
other day, but he finished the sceneson with eighty eight
receptions for eight hundred and eighty four yards and eight touchdowns.
Speaker 2 (15:36):
And when we talk about in NFL circles, Jamar Chase
won the triple crown for a wide receiver in terms
of receptions, yards and touchdowns. Well, John new Smith has
done it internally with the Dolphins. Has He's now got
the record for receptions by and like you say, for
yards and touchdowns by a tight end, so well deserved,
(15:56):
I think absolutely. Now I'm going to continue with a
player on the offensive side of the ball in Devon
ah Chan who recorded eleven carries fo one hundred and
twenty one yards, which was in eleven point zero average,
And that eleven point yard eleven point zero yards per
attempt was the fourth highest rushing average by a player
any player in a game this season, and a Chan
(16:18):
is the first player in franchise history to have six
rushing touchdowns and six receiving touchdowns in a single season,
and one of five active players to do so. I
won't ask you to name the other five leaguers. I've
no idea. And he totaled fourteen hundred and ninety nine
scrimmage yards on the season, which is the third most
(16:38):
by Dolphins running back in franchise history, behind two Ricky
Williams seasons of two thousand and two two thousand and
three when he got two two hundred and sixteen and
seventeen hundred and twenty three yards respectively, which I think
was just before your time becoming a fan. Yeah, I
mean I remember certainly twenty two, who was a tremendous
(17:00):
season by Ricky Williams, and you do wonder whether we'll
ever see the likes of that again. But the one
nine chen is now third on that list.
Speaker 1 (17:07):
Two thousand and five was my first season, just by
a couple of years. But that brings us on to
the defensive side of the ball and sack sealer recording
ten sacks for the second consecutive season. Sela totaled six tackles,
four silo, a sack and a half, two quarterback hits,
(17:29):
and a tackle for a loss in Sunday's game. Seila's
first Dolphin to record consecutive ten plus sax season since
Cameron Wake in twenty sixteen. In twenty seventeen and Seela
led the team and it's set to finish second among
the interior defensive linemen with ten sacks on the season,
trailing only Leonard Williams of Seattle by one sack.
Speaker 2 (17:55):
Did you see the tweet sent out by Travis when
he talked to Zach Seder about the fact that he
was the only interior defensive lineman with ten sacks two
seasons in a row, and all he wanted to know
about was has anyone done it three times? Yeah? It
says a lot about him, does it? Yeah?
Speaker 1 (18:14):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (18:15):
And last, but not least, Jason Sanders. He converted two
field goal attempts and to extra points against the Jets.
His thirty seven field goals this season marked a new
career high and a single season, the fourth most in
the NFL this season and is the second most in
the single season in franchise history behind o Lindo Mara
(18:37):
in nineteen ninety nine hit thirty nine field goals, and
with his eight points on Sunday, Sanders is twenty to
twenty four season total one hundred and thirty seven points
for the third highest point total in franchise history and
the second best output of his career. He previously got
one hundred and forty four in twenty twenty. And Jason
(18:57):
Sanders is the only kicker in the NFL to make
a field goal in each game played this season, and
he joins garrow Ya premier in nineteen seventy three, as
the only kickers in franchise history to make a field
goal in each game of a season. So well, great,
great season by Jason Tannders.
Speaker 1 (19:18):
Absolutely, But with that being said, that brings us on
to halftime in the show we have. So now we're
at halftime, do you want to go over last week's
trivia question?
Speaker 2 (19:38):
Yeah, just a reminder, we asked you who was the
first member of the Miami Dolphins to be elected to
the Hall of Fame? And I seem to recall neither
of us would have got that one, but the answer
we had al Arizonka be Jim Langer, see Brian Greasy
or De Paul Warfield, and it was, in fact Paul Warfield,
wasn't it. It was, Yeah, didn't know that one interest
(20:00):
in fact there, So give us a new one to
end the season. Certainly the well, I guess we might
carry on delivering trivia throughout the offseason. But what's the
new one for this week?
Speaker 1 (20:12):
So the new question for this week and I can
see how you try to catch me out here was
who was the last team Miami beat in the playoffs?
And your options are a the Baltimore Ravens beat the
Seattle Seahawks, see the Indianapolis Colts, or d the Buffalo Bills.
Speaker 2 (20:31):
And most people you think would have got that. But
just for reference or should we give them a clue?
I mean, you can give them a clue if you want.
Twenty three to seventeen win on the thirtieth of December
two thousand and the reason I want to mention that
is because a lot, a lot was a lot of
emphasis was placed on acknowledging the fact that it's been
(20:53):
a twenty four year gap since our last playoff win.
I know Coach Mike addressed it a lot the beginning
of the season. We talked about it, but it's going
to stretch to almost literally twenty five years now, isn't it,
because we've got away another year for any potential playoff win. Okay,
should we deliver our final weekly pick them table of
(21:14):
the season league? Who finished at the bottom and who
was the ultimate winner and the champion?
Speaker 1 (21:20):
Interesting? Yes, we should absolutely do that. Let's start off
with the bottom half and I will give you the
bottom half as that is where I resided. Come the
end of the season, Blue Co finished bottom with one
hundred and forty eight points. I finished in twenty fourth
place with one hundred and sixty four points. The only beaver, Yeah,
(21:41):
finished in twenty third place with one hundred and sixty
five points. Miami five oh one had one hundred and
seventy points and Jojo Chiemia had one hundred and seventy
six points, finishing in twenty first place.
Speaker 2 (21:54):
I feel really sorry for the only beaver because I
mentioned last week that was Steven and he missed his
picks for couple of weeks, and that's plummeting, plummeted him
down the table. Prior to that, I think he was
doing reasonably well.
Speaker 1 (22:05):
Yeah, as I said, do you want to give us
the top half of the table and some home supremacy.
Speaker 2 (22:13):
I see, yes, indeed so her Man Am eighty five
I think if I remember rightly finished in fifth place
one hundred and eighty eight. Danny Meyers finished in the
fourth place in one hundred and ninety one one perse
just behind his dad me one hundred and ninety five,
but he did get bragging rights over his uncle. He
(22:33):
beat his uncle, so he's happy with that and the
top two as they were last week. So unfortunately, ray
Bots seventy nine couldn't hang on to his season long
lead and was overtaken at the death by Keith aka
seventy two equals perfection, so who had two hundred and
four points to raise two hundred and two. So well
done Keith, and hopefully we'll get a prize in the
(22:56):
post to you very soon. So yeah, we'll be back
next year, of course, won't we do. But this was
a lot of fun this year doing it on sleeper,
and I'm sure we'll do the same again next season
and hopefully if you've not joined in this year, hopefully
you can take part next year.
Speaker 1 (23:12):
Absolutely, it was a lot of fun, but that would
be said. We got on to the second half the show,
and we're going to talk a little bit about Chris
Career and Mike McDaniel's end of season presser.
Speaker 2 (23:23):
Yeah, they delivered it yesterday, as they always do, shortly
after the end of the season, so it's expected to
come through relatively soon. And it was made for interesting viewing,
didn't it. As always just hearing their thoughts and perceptions
on how the season's gone, what they've got planned for
the future. And they certainly delivered a few talking points,
didn't they. And I know you've got a particular talking
(23:45):
point that you want to discuss first, shall we say?
Speaker 1 (23:49):
Yeah, So this is not really based on what they
said directly in the press conference, but this is more
kind of to set the tone before we go through
some of this because it's still some of the action
immediately after the game. And I understand, you know, people
hurt after the game. The season hasn't ended the way
you wanted to, not only the you know, the game itself,
(24:10):
but the season as a whole. But it just it
just wanted to put me to you know, even after
the press are seeing some of the tweets and social
media and some of that stuff, just wanted to bring
this up the difference between excuses and reasons, And I
think it's a really interesting line. But you know, between
(24:32):
what someone perceives as an excuse and what someone perceives
as a reason. I would say, all it is is
your own threshold for whether you believe it or not.
Speaker 2 (24:41):
So what's your excuse for finishing bottom near the bottom
of the prediction legally, or what are your reasons?
Speaker 1 (24:47):
My excuse is my reason isn't rubbish. My excuse is
I hit the wrong buttons. But you see what I mean.
It's it's kind of where you're It almost feels like
the that the true difference is how much stock you
put in what I'm saying. You know, if I tell
you something, can I consider it to be a reason?
It's because I think this is the reason that's happened.
(25:09):
If you don't believe me, you'll call it an excuse,
But if you do believe me, you'll call it a reason.
So I think it's just important to kind of really
think it through. When you know, we talk about some
of the things that happened throughout the season, and I'm
not making excuses or given reasons. We're just going to,
you know, talk about what was said and you know,
(25:30):
you kind of have to make your own mind up
where you fall into whether that constitutes a reason is
an excuse. But it seems like a lot of social
media just want to say excuse, excuse, excuse for everything,
and they say, I don't personally agree with that. I
think some of those things definitely fall into the category
of reasons, but that's just my opinion. I just wanted
(25:51):
to get your thoughts on that as well before we
start it.
Speaker 2 (25:53):
Yeah, agreed, And I think if you look at the
talking points that we're going to discuss in a moment
and think with a lodge head and try and put
yourself in the shoes of Chris Greer and Mike McDaniel,
you can understand where they're coming from because they're much
closer to the operation than we are. We're just fans
looking from the outside. We don't get exposed to every
(26:14):
single thing that goes on within the organization. All we
see is the product and the field, and that's what
we have to as fans, have to base opinions on,
is what we see on the field, isn't it, rather
than what goes on behind the scenes, And we're not
pertinent to that knowledge. We don't know anything that goes
on behind the scenes. And Chris Greer and Mike macdannllan
are effectively running that team, aren't they, So they do
(26:37):
know what goes on behind So their opinion is more
based around the whole bigger picture, isn't it, rather than
just a small portion of a product that we see
on the field.
Speaker 1 (26:46):
Yeah, it's more rooted in fact, I would say, because
everyone else is trying to build a picture based off
having missing information. You know, a certain amount, you surmise
a certain amount, you know, to kind of build the
rest of the picture for yourself. I think this definitely happens,
you know, on social media, and I think things can
(27:08):
kind of spiral a little bit out of control. But
I just think it's relevant to think of, you know,
to listen to something and then make your mind up
if you think, rather than jump into the conclusion of, hey,
that's an excuse just because somebody said it as a
reason for something happening. I think I think there's a difference. Yeah,
and you've got to articulating really badly.
Speaker 2 (27:30):
No, you don't. You're articulating it really well, and you're
coming across as if you've got to base your your
opinions on facts rather than stuff you read in social media.
That can be way off the mark because people can
write any old stuff on social media, whereas when you
hear it from directly from, as I say, the people
that are effectively running the team, you've got to put
(27:52):
more emphasis on that. I think.
Speaker 1 (27:54):
Yeah. Absolutely. So that being said, should we start the top?
We've got a list. That's why I'm saying up.
Speaker 2 (28:01):
Yeah. So they broke the Tyreek Hill topic early on
in they in the press are in what was reportedly
said after the Jets game in him wanting to get
out of Miami, and they addressed that and said essentially
that they've had good conversations with Tyreek and that they
won't reveal the content of those conversations, but they were
(28:23):
productive and it's been addressed. So only time will tell
in terms of what happens to Tyreek Hill long term,
but at least they've addressed it early and they've not
let that particular issue linger. And it remains to be
seen what happens, But it doesn't seem as though it
would be a particularly bad cloud that's gonna hang over
(28:44):
the Tyreek and the organization for much of a period
at all.
Speaker 1 (28:50):
No, I think it's really it's really difficult as well,
isn't it? Because I apologize because I don't remember who
put out this piece of information. It is one of
the beat writers because obviously they were there when this
was happening, but apparently Tyrek had originally declined to talk
to the media and then did, and obviously, like it's
(29:13):
a high pressure situation, might not be the right but
it's definitely an emotional time, like the season has just
come to an end. Everything that you work for all
year has come to an end. We know Tyreek has
played banged up and worked hard throughout the season and
obviously had the ups and downs of having success with
two being in there, and you know, things being much
(29:33):
more of a struggle with the backup quarterbacks in there
as the entire offense did. So I think catching someone
right after the game and getting that immediate reaction I
think sometimes gives you that sort of response, and I
think maybe had he had some time to think about it,
that may not have been his response. And I'm not
saying that means you know, what he said was wrong,
(29:57):
just I think it's, you know, it's a highly charge situation.
In regards to you know, we're all out put this
way if we've taken fans at the word as soon
as the game had ended to be a lot of
fans that are no longer supporting the team. And I
think that's not the case. It's just you're, you know,
adrenaline is running high.
Speaker 2 (30:17):
Should we move on to the next topic, Lenley in
no particular order, And one of the more interesting points
which Chris Greer acknowledged he thought would have been brought
up sooner in his pressor was the addressing the issue
of the offensive line. And he's basically come out and
said that going forward they will need to address the
(30:39):
offensive line and recruit new players. So I think that's
something that we can expect to see on the basis
of that comment throughout free agency and through the draft.
Speaker 1 (30:50):
Yeah, and I think, you know, it was inevitable he
was going to get that question. I think you know
when he said during the last off season that he
thinks as fans, we are more worried about it than
he is. Again, it comes with that caveat of if
if this O line performs and stays healthy, we believe
(31:12):
that it's good. As he mentioned in his presser. It
was very good last year, and really the main change
you made when healthy was to replace the center with
Aaron Brewer, who I thought played incredibly well through the season.
Obviously had a bit of a rough start with the
some injury. I think it was a thumb injury as
a hand injury in training camp, and you know, when
(31:34):
I spoke to him at the start of the season,
had played in the cast and you know, played really
well and I think it's definitely the sort of player
that you want here for the long term. But you know,
health really bit that position group badly, and you know,
this is again, this is where you come down to
excuse versus reason. That did happen. That was a fact,
(31:57):
like it actually did happen to me. That definitely constitutes
a reason. I suppose you can call it an excuse
you if you think it was a foreseeable outcome. But
it's an interesting one, but clearly one that you know,
Chris Greer is showing that he is not stubborn. He's
(32:20):
not gonna say I'll prove you right by doing it
again this year. He said, Okay, based on the new
information which you've got this year, the equation has changed
and this is now the needs addressing in a different way.
So I think you know that makes sense.
Speaker 2 (32:35):
I was quite pleased he came out and addressed the
comments that he made last year around not being too
concerned about the offensive line and explained why he thought
that with the obviously with Keon Smith missing the season
through injury, as I Win missing the season a large
portion of the season through injury, Austin Jackson missed a
(32:56):
lot of the season through injury, and the line effectively
bled out when Austin Jackson went and was done for
the season. But he was kind of the point he
was trying to highlight was that those three players alone
gave them were important and gave that line the all
important depth that they wouldn't have had otherwise when obviously
(33:16):
when those players were out. So I was glad he
tried to address the rationale behind his comment last year.
Speaker 1 (33:23):
Yeah, and I think you know the point he made
was good. They're one of the best rushing teams in
the NFL last season. Now you can't it's hard to
not attribute any of that to the offensive line. But
I think fans and media gets something in their head
and decide this is what we want to do, and
then when it's not completed by the GM who doesn't
(33:44):
necessarily agree, it's like, hey, you know, when it doesn't
work out, you know, that's that's what we're going to
throw back at you. I think the Dolphins have invested
in o line, do you know what I mean. They've
brought in Patrick I thought played well this year. They
did bring it out and Brewer, you know, as a
(34:05):
free agent that wasn't just disregarding the position altogether, that's
arguably an upgrade. So it's difficult because I think the
truth as usual probably lies somewhere in the middle as
opposed to being particularly black and white.
Speaker 2 (34:23):
Yeah, moving on to injuries. Then obviously the availability of
Tour was addressed as well, and they were asked the
question in how would they evaluate the play of Tour
after they signed him to that extension and commented on
the fact that they signed him and then he went
and missed six games, and he commented around how it
(34:46):
was great to see him display an element of growth
as a player, and also leadership as well is an
important factor. I think it was. I can't rememer whether
it was Chris Greer or coach Mike said that some
of the free agents they brought in were really surprised
at just how good of a leader Tour was in
(35:07):
terms of his standing in the in the changing rooms.
But they at the same time, whilst giving him praise,
they both acknowledged he needs to be made He needs
to make himself available, doesn't he in terms of learning,
And we've said it on our show, control what you
can control, i e. Making sure that he doesn't put
himself at risk by scrambling too much and he's taking sacks,
(35:30):
needs to throw the ball away, minimizing the risk of
injury and such like, And so it was good to
see that they addressed that as well.
Speaker 1 (35:39):
Yeah. Absolutely, And you know, I don't think it's particularly
a secret, is it. We all agree that this team
stands its best chance when Tour is under center, and
if that involves him not making a play in the
game before and having to throw the ball away, the
next two games are far more valuable than the one
(36:01):
play in the one game. So but again that's I
think it's hard because to us learning where that line
is obviously made great strikes last year to go to
the season without suffering any injuries, and this year wasn't
able to do it, but he made changes in the
off season last year to try and improve his game,
(36:23):
and I'm sure he'll do the same thing again this year,
because that's again, it's a forever evolving process. It's not
as simple as just come back and do the same
thing and expect a different result.
Speaker 2 (36:34):
I think that's a nice segue into the conversation they
had around searching for a QB two next season, isn't it,
Because they did acknowledge, they did address the play of
the backup quarterback, and then they were asked directly how
they will approach that position in the off season given
to his injuries, and they acknowledged it was a good question.
(36:55):
Commented on Skyler by name didn't necessarily refer to Tyler
Huntley by name, but did acknowledge that that's a process
they're going to work through in the entire offseason, leaving
no stone unturned in terms of determining who is going
to be the best player for that quarterback to position,
(37:17):
and that includes the draft as well. He ended that
question by referencing the draft. So I think that they
acknowledge that that is a position that they've got to
address in some form, which is clear to see because
obviously we know and everybody knows when and you've said
it just now when too, it goes out the team
(37:38):
underperformed so great that they've kind of acknowledged and been
open and honest that that is a position position they
need to address.
Speaker 1 (37:46):
Yeah, and obviously they last year, we know that a
few players left a free agency, and Chris Greer mentioned
specifically that they were in other quarterbacks as well in
the off season. Then financially it wasn't doable. But also
it puts some of those compensatory pigs in jeopardy as well,
and that was part of the building process. And obviously
(38:07):
coming off a year where two didn't need the backup
to play, you make that calculated decision based on those facts.
And that again that the equation is forever changing, and
it's changed again this year, and it sounds like it
will be addressed differently. I do think Tour might be
one of the hardest quarterbacks in the NFL to find
(38:29):
a backup, to find a backup that plays a similar
game to him, because I think if somebody plays with
the main attributes that to it has, which is accuracy
and anticipation, they're probably not backup quarterback, and I think
(38:49):
that's difficult. I think Tyler Huntley makes perfect sense as
a backup for a Lamar Jackson because his game in
some ways matches what Lamar is trying to do. And
I think sometimes if you can have a quarterback that
kind of meets somewhere along the line's skill set wise
with the starter, it probably makes that transition easier, you know,
(39:14):
if they have to come in and play.
Speaker 2 (39:18):
One of the topics that was addressed quite early on
in the press, and this was asked directly to Coach Mike,
was around the team discipline and some particular concerns that
they've got in that space. What did you make of
those comments that at first of all the question that
was asked and then Coach Mike's response.
Speaker 1 (39:35):
Yeah, I mean the question that was asked my perfect
sense based off some of the player feedback that came yesterday,
and I think we heard that in some of the
media clips as well. You know that there had been
some kind some kind of issues with it. I can
also see why it must be a very hard thing
(39:56):
to police because your option are kind of limited in
your actions depending on who the player is. And I'm
not going to guess who the players are. But let's
say it's an upper echelon player. They're probably getting paid
enough that the fines are very difficult to have a
fine that's going to impact them in a way that's
going to seriously change behavior. And I'm sure there's people
(40:21):
screaming at me saying, well, the only other thing to
do is affect playing time. But when you do that,
you affect the outcome of the whole team. So you're
now punishing the entire team and us as a fan
base by doing that. So I don't know if that's
an option. I think it must be very difficult to
overcome that. I'd be very interested to see how Mike
(40:44):
McDaniel kind of answers that question as we head into
next season, when undoubtedly it'll be brought up, but when
there's been some time to maybe affect change or see
what happens. But I can see how you could be
in a situation where you say, you know, we're finding
people as per your rules, and if it's not having
the effect, it must be very hard to escalate it
(41:07):
and take it to another level. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (41:09):
Absolutely, that brings us on to the last point that
we wanted to talk about was the potential return of
Kalaise Campbell. They were asked around what the future holds
for Kalais and as it stands right now, externally, we
don't know. They may well know internally, of course, but
they did answer the question and suggest that, given the opportunity,
if Kalais Campbell decides to return to the NFL next year,
(41:33):
they acknowledged that hopefully the Dolphins would be in some
consideration for a return because he enjoyed his time here.
Speaker 1 (41:40):
I think that's a good thing, isn't it. Like he
obviously enjoyed his time with the team, enjoyed playing in
the defense, obviously enjoyed being in Miami as well back
home as somewhere that he played in college. But yeah,
you'd like to think that if he was to return,
that the Dolphins would be in the mix, because I
think it's anyone they wouldn't be happy to see Khlais
(42:03):
Campbell back in the Dolphins jersey again next year, And
obviously that's something for next year. But yeah, I mean,
he's been so much fun to watch play and made
such a big impact I think on the defense and
also was a great partner to Zach Seder. In the
middle of the defense throughout the season.
Speaker 2 (42:20):
Just to quote what Chris Career did say about that
topic was that when they spoke to Kalaius Campbell, he said,
and I quote, we would be a very strong consideration
to come back if he decides to play again, and
we would welcome him back with open arms, as they
rightly should.
Speaker 1 (42:36):
Yeah, and obviously we wish the best for Claires Campbell
and in whichever decision he makes, and definitely look back
on this season fondly, you know, as a as a
silver lining to some of the bad stuff that as
you know, some of the stuff that hasn't gone as
well as we wanted some of the stuff that did go,
(42:59):
as well as watching Klai's can will be a member
of this team, So I think we should definitely will
be pleased with that, and if he returns, definitely would
love to see it in Akron Orange.
Speaker 2 (43:08):
And I'm sure we'll be talking about him a bit
more on our end of season review episode as well.
So they're the kind of the Yeah, they're the main
talking points that we've kind of picked out, aren't they?
For following the end of season pressing yesterday, there's anything
else you want to add Lee around that. I know
there's one one thing that you did notice that you
(43:29):
put in our notes that you wanted to mention.
Speaker 1 (43:32):
Yeah, Chris Gred definitely mentioned that he was that they
were going to review everything they reviewed coaching and that
his job is obviously reviewed and they review Mike McDaniel
and the coaching staff and the players, But he didn't
say that he was going to review the podcasts. So
hopefully we can look forward to a contract extension in
(43:53):
the off season as well.
Speaker 2 (43:55):
Yeah, maybe we should sign for life Lee.
Speaker 1 (43:59):
Absolutely, I think we've done that. I think we side
as fans for life. That's the important part. But with
that being said, I think that kind of brings us
to the end of this show. Hopefully we're going to
bring some fun stuff during the offseason. We will look
ahead to some of the playoff games. We didn't do
that this week, but we will do going forward, I think,
(44:21):
and obviously onto the Super Bowl and turn our attention
to draft stuff. We will also have some great guests
coming on over the next few weeks as well. But say,
is there anything else from you before we get out
of here?
Speaker 2 (44:35):
Only one last thing in that spare thought for Andy Davis,
who I mentioned on the show last week, was given
a trip to New York by his girlfriend to see
the Jets and the Dolphins game on the back of
never having seen the Dolphins win in his lifetime in
person and his winless record. Unfortunately, he has been maintained
(44:56):
I shouldn't laugh. I do feel sorry for him, but
never the less, I hope you had a great time
on your New York trip anyway.
Speaker 1 (45:02):
And absolutely and when it changes, when they win that
first game, it will be the best experience. I know.
The first few games I went to, they also lost.
I went to home games, I must say the first
few that I went to, they got beat. But I
always say to people, if you get beat in my area,
(45:23):
it could be worse because at least I'm going back
to the beach afterwards watch some more football. But yes,
So that's it for this episode. Don't forget to check
us out on social media. You'll find us a Dull

their content coming up. Travis and the Drive Time podcast Daily.
I don't know that schedule changes during will change during
your season, but it's currently daily and also the Fish Tank,
who have awesome guests the entire time. I might say
(46:07):
this is the start of the time of the year
where I start really diving into the fish tank where
I can give it my full attention. So I look
forward to that. But until then, from being Simon, we
will see you next week.
