Speaker 1 (00:00):
What's up Dolphins. This is Juice and Big Seth.
Speaker 2 (00:02):
From the Fish Tank Podcast. But right now you're listening
to the Dolphin UK podcast and Juice, I can't wait
to dive in. Let's go on, Jee, take them away
(00:36):
way around.
Speaker 1 (00:45):
Hello and welcome to the Dolphin UK Podcast. A little
bit delayed this week for some festive celebrations, not quite
victory celebrations, but festive celebrations, but we are back. We
are going to look forward to Sunday's match up at
hard Rock Stadium against the San Francis confidence we will
grow over some of the news from the last week
(01:06):
and look at the limb playoff picture that still exists
for our Miami Dolphins. But first I want to welcome Simon.
How you doing so?
Speaker 3 (01:17):
Yeah or very well? Thank you?
Speaker 1 (01:18):
Lee? Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:18):
A little bit later later in the week, as you say,
due to our respective Christmas parties, and I'm a little
bit worried. I know, we lost to the Texans League,
which we're not going to go into too much detail
around that, but you were currently waving a pair of
scissors around and a little bit worried about what you
were going to do with those scissors.
Speaker 1 (01:35):
It's not that kind of show. I just fidget terribly,
which is probably why we shouldn't have a YouTube version
of the show. But yes, let's start with some news,
and I think first of all, we want to wish
Grant the bo's well after that nasty hit that he
suffered last Sunday against the Texans and after spending I
(01:56):
think it was three days in the hospital, wasn't it
before being released. Obviously, it's scary when you see something
like that happen. You don't want to see any player
on any team or anyone else for that matter.
Speaker 3 (02:08):
Yeah, it was great to see him or hear that
he's on his way home now and whilst worrying time
when it happened, of course, and we've all seen it.
It's not going to delve too much into that, but
the main thing is that he's going to end up
fitting well and healthy, and he'll be home for Christmas,
Lee and hopefully I'll have a nice time with his family.
Speaker 1 (02:24):
Absolutely more wide receiving news. The Dolphins and Odell Beckham
Junior parted ways this week after coming to a mutual
agreement on that. It seems like Odell wanted to leave
and the Dolphins are happy to grant him that. I
think that probably slightly coincides with the emergence of Elie
Washington in the past game as well as everything else.
(02:44):
But side some thoughts on ode Beckham and his short
time with the Dolphins.
Speaker 3 (02:49):
Yeah, and it's unfortunate it didn't work out. And if
it's the best for both parties that he moves on,
then so beyet. But it's a shame. But and we
always knew there was a bit of a risk there
because he was coming off an injury at the end
of last season. He's been hit by injuries over recent
years and we weren't sure how much he would contribute
on the back of that. As it turned out, he missed.
He did miss a chunk at the start of this season.
(03:11):
Hasn't really settled. I don't think we wishing well wherever
he ends up. But it's probably down to, like you say,
the emergence of Malik Washington, and that's kind of what
we've got to focus on now in terms of he's
the effectively the number three receiver on the team now,
isn't he?
Speaker 1 (03:26):
And Odell Beckham, Yeah, I was going to say performance wise,
I think you know, it's it's kind of neither here
nor there is it, But having a veteran who doesn't
necessarily still want to be there only impedes the progress
of a of a young ascending player who you just drafted,
So you know, these snaps are extremely valuable to him,
(03:48):
to Milie Washington this time of the season. So, like
you say, mutually agreed part ways is probably a really
good you know, this is what those times. That's actually
the apt way to put it because it suits everybody
be involved, when I don't think that's always the case
when people people say that, But I digress slightly, and
then I'm going to use the week seventeen matchup on
(04:09):
the road against the Cleveland Browns has been moved out
of prime time and moved into a nine oh five
slot here in the UK on the Sunday to twenty ninth.
I think we speculated on this. I think a last
week's show kind of makes sense, and I think we
even chose the matchup that was going to get put
(04:29):
in its place as well.
Speaker 3 (04:31):
So I'm pleased it's been moved out anywayly because I
didn't fancy getting up and yeah hours to watch another
difficult game so great that it's been moved to a
more respectable hour as far as UK fans are concerned.
Speaker 1 (04:44):
Yeah, definitely good for the UK fan base. But after
talking about Week seventeen and we hope to get there
still in playoff contention, I know it's slim. Don't shout
at me down the radio, down into your headphones, but
we are going to take a quick look how the
playoff picture stands after the defeat on Sunday to the Texans,
and what the possible scenarios are for the Dolphins to
(05:07):
get in.
Speaker 3 (05:09):
It's funny, isn't it. You see all these different outlets
with their playoff probabilities, and we've always taken hours from
the official NFL dot com website, which currently stands at
seven percent. The Dolphins only have a small chance of
getting into the playoffs. But I saw something earlier. I
don't know what the outlet was. It said the Dolphins
have a twenty two percent chance of getting into playoffs,
(05:30):
which given the series of results that need to go
their way, that just seems to be a bit of
a stretch.
Speaker 1 (05:37):
Yeah, I suppose it is a bit of a stretch.
But we had this conversation last week, didn't we When
you look at some of the games. Everything becomes a
little bit interesting. With Denver and Indianapolis having played each
other last week, and we've Denver this week now playing
the Chargers. There's kind of a little bit of cannibalization
going on, isn't it, Where all the teams are kind
of facing each other, which makes it slightly more likely
(05:59):
for you to get the results you'd want. You're still
obviously relying on a lot of help from other people.
Obviously you still have to do the business yourself. You're
still going to have to go out and win these
remaining games, including that game on the road in Cleveland,
which will probably be cold, maybe warmer at four o'clock
than it would have been as a primetime game. But
(06:20):
you know, there's still tough games on the slate, including
and this weekend against the Finners, which we'll get into
in a little bit. But so how do you look
at it now? With the way that the other teams
schedules pan out.
Speaker 3 (06:34):
First and foremost, the Dolphins have got to win out.
That's that's a given. They need to win all of
their remaining games. If they lose to the Thinners this weekend,
their playoff probability drops to less than one percent according
to NFL dot Com, And we kind of know that anyway,
don't we They've got to win out. If they win,
their probability does increase slightly to eleven percent. But in
(06:56):
order for the Dolphins to get in the playoffs, in
addition to the Dolphins winning their last three games, Indianapolis
needs to lose at least one of their three remaining games,
and either the Chargers need to lose two or the
Broncos need to lose all three of theirs. So given
all of those permutations, I think we all know why
(07:19):
INDI need to lose at least one because they're having
They've got the tiebreaker over the Dolphins, having beaten the
Meat earlier in the season. But they've got a series
of games. Their three games are all against teams that
have been eliminated already. They've got the Tennessee Titans at home,
followed by the Giants away, and then the Jags at home.
At least, we focus on Indy first, as they're the
ones sitting immediately above us in the in the playoff table,
(07:42):
if you like. On paper, it seems as though they've
got the easiest run in by far, but the Titans
have just made a change at quarterback and Mason Rudolph
has to name the starter, and seeing what he did
against the Dolphins when they played early in the season,
you'd like to think that if the same thing happens again,
it will make Tennessee team even better.
Speaker 1 (08:02):
Yeah, it feels like that does give the Titans the
best chance to help us. We mentioned it before, the
Mason ry door's far less erratic. His ceiling might be
far lower, but his floor is far higher. So it
kind of gives you a bit of a steadier performance.
And some teams that's all they need. They just need
you to not lose the game for them, as opposed
to putting the team on their shoulders and winning the game. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (08:25):
And of course Titans have already gone into Houston and
won there, so they can go away from home and
beat a playoff contender, So let fingers cross they do
it against the Colts as well. The Broncos are sorry.
The Chargers are next on the list, sitting slightly above
the Colts in the playoff table. Within it currently an
eighty seven percent chance of getting the playoffs. Most importantly,
(08:48):
they play the Broncos this coming Thursday night. At home,
followed by two away trips to either sorry to New England,
followed by the Raiders. So not a couple of not
an easy sleigh of games there, And looking at that,
I'd perhaps want the Broncos to beat them this Thursday
night because it seems more likely that the Chargers are
(09:09):
going to lose two than it does the Broncos to
lose all three. And suddenly if the Bronx, if the
Chargers do lose to Denver on Thursday, that means they've
got to only lose one of their two remaining games
away from home in order to give the Dolphins a chance.
So you agree here, you are you rooting for the
Broncos to win this?
Speaker 1 (09:29):
Yeah? Yeah, I think so. I think it makes the
most sense, doesn't it, because they're already on the nine wins.
That's the you know, you're going to play in the
averages as much as anything else. Also, it actually go
on the road. Both of those things have to go
on the road twice only in the next three.
Speaker 3 (09:50):
Yeah, the Broncos obviously away, it's nearly said San Diego
La this week, then away again at the Bengals, who
are effectively eliminated. They are eliminated thing. No, they're not.
They're still alive just so they're playing. Their probabilities dips
to be low one percent if they lose this week,
but they're very much still alive. Sat behind the Dolphins.
(10:12):
So hopefully the Bengals can win this weekend. They'll still
have something to play for.
Speaker 1 (10:16):
And they've got.
Speaker 3 (10:17):
Burrow and Chase who are playing really well at the minute.
Speaker 1 (10:20):
Yeah, and they're not really in that position where they
can kind of where they're really playing for a pick.
They are, they're paying these players high money. They're in
that window where they need to win, so there'll be
people trying to save jobs and stuff there, but they go.
They welcome the Cleveland Browns in a divisional matchup this week,
so you know, they get the three win Browns that
(10:40):
have just made a quarterback change. So you know, we
also want to route for a Bengals win because we
need them to be competitive. And I think that's where
it becomes a little bit interesting, doesn't it with some
of these matchups coming up.
Speaker 3 (10:55):
Yeah, and then lastly, the Broncos are playing the Chiefs,
and I mean at the moment, the Chiefs are still
trying to secure home field advantage, and we don't know
the status of what Patrick Mahomes is, like, he's week
to week apparently, so we'll see whether he's playing in
that game and whether the Chiefs need to win that
against the Broncos in the last regular season game to
secure home field. So's not beyond the realms of possibility.
(11:18):
Is it ly that the Broncos could lose all three?
Speaker 1 (11:21):
Yeah? This is what I mean. This is what we
spoke about kind of in depth last week. I think
it really is possible. But also, like you say, there
is any question over Patrick Mahomes and they decide maybe
to not play him, bearing in mind they're thirteen and one,
that game in week eighteen becomes really interesting. Were eighteen
Week seventeen? Yeah, yeah, losing my mind. But you know,
(11:45):
Kansas City player home this week, but they played the
nine to five Houston Texans, who was also playing for seeding.
But there is a chance for Kansas City sorry to
drop a game, and dropping a game probably helps the
Dolphins because it keeps that number one seed competitive. We
don't want them to win and the Bills to lose
(12:06):
in that gap to appear where they can they can
take the foot off the pedal and in the last
week the season. We want that game to be competitive.
I'm sure there will still be players that are that
are arrested with the playoffs ahead and stuff like that,
but having that be a meaningful game would be in
our favor.
Speaker 3 (12:23):
I think, like we said, the Dolphins have got to
win out first, and they've got the forty nine ers
this weekend, which we'll go into, followed by the Browns
and the Jets away from home. The Browns is likely
to be a cold weather game, and there's obviously a
possibility the Jets will also be a cold weather game.
But they've got to step up at those two games,
haven't they if the season's still alive?
Speaker 1 (12:43):
Yeah? Absolutely?
Speaker 3 (12:52):
Okay, so we reached half time in the show. Shall
we move on, Lee to our regular feature of our trivia.
Speaker 1 (12:59):
Absolutely, let's do that when I find it on my document.
Speaker 3 (13:04):
Just to remind you the question last week, Jalen Model's
four thousand and eighty five career receiving yards are the
most in the player's first four seasons in Dolphins history.
Which player did he just overtake against the Jets to
reach top top? Would you known the answer?
Speaker 1 (13:19):
Lee? I did know the answers to this one.
Speaker 3 (13:22):
Yeah, yeah, I mean Jarvis Landry four thousand and thirty
eight was the previous mark, And I do remember a
lot of attention was given to Jarvis Landry as he
was in his first four seasons because he was a
pretty awesome player for the Dolphins, wasn't he and rightly
received a lot of attention for his production.
Speaker 1 (13:38):
Absolutely, I think the interesting thing looking at because you've
put in the list of the top five, and the
interesting thing to me there is especially the number of receptions.
It took two yet there Jarvis Landry, it took four
hundred receptions to get to four thousand and thirty eight yards,
and for Jalen Model to get to four thousand and
(13:59):
eighty five, it took three hundred and five ninety five
less receptions to get to hit that number. So it
shows the explosiveness of Jalen Model.
Speaker 3 (14:07):
And yeah, talking of explosiveness is explosivenesses if that is
even a word the name. Yeah, going three, four and
five on this list, who are Clayton, Chambers and Duper respectively.
They're in the top five, but the number of receptions
they've got for their respective yards is obviously a lot lower,
(14:29):
and I think that's reflective of having somebody like Dan
Marino behind center, isn't it. Certainly for the case of
Clayton and Duper.
Speaker 1 (14:36):
Yeah, exactly. And also, you know there is what a
thousand yards between between Jalen Model and Mark duber, so
like one hundred and fifty seven receptions compared to three
hundred and five. That's about half as much for another
thousand yards. It's interesting, isn't it when you see it?
But it's just going to show how explosive the team
(14:58):
have been at times in the past.
Speaker 3 (15:00):
And the current as well, given the number of reflections
in the first four years. Absolutely, Okay, do you want
to set the trivia question for this week then.
Speaker 1 (15:09):
I would love to so. Johnny Smith's having an outstanding
season and currently has six hundred and ninety two receiving yards,
which I believe is are personal best for him as
it stands, which is still you know, it's quite an achievement.
Bear in mind, I think he broke that mark a
couple of weeks ago. Which Dolphins tight end has the
most receiving yards in a single season. You wrote the question,
(15:35):
did you know the answer before you wrote it?
Speaker 3 (15:37):
I probably would have guessed the person who is second
and fourth on this list, who's got two entries in
the top five. I would have given it was thought
it would have been him, but obviously it's not. And
I'm not going to say the name because you don't
want to give any clues. Whatever the number, I think
Johnny Smith is going to reach the top spot by
the end of the season. He's got three games to
(15:59):
get one hundred yards one.
Speaker 1 (16:01):
Hundred yards exactly, one hundred yards exactly.
Speaker 3 (16:04):
Yeah, so we should do it, and we should see
a new tight end record holder. But would you have
got this one?
Speaker 1 (16:09):
I would have got this one. That would have been
my first guess. I was surprised number three on the list. Yeah,
but I loved him as a player, I must say.
I really enjoyed his time as a Dolphin.
Speaker 3 (16:19):
Yeah, excellent. All right, let's move on to the We'll
give you that to next week. Let's move on to
the Pickham Leaguely, how are you getting on at the bottom?
Speaker 1 (16:26):
Badly? Really badly? And this week I can tell you
because I put my picks in yesterday in a blind
panic because I couldn't remember what blooming day it was.
Someone had told me it was someone else has just
mentioned it being Thursday, and obviously they had the day wrong,
and I my first thought was not, oh God, I
haven't gone you know, I haven't done something, or I
haven't gone to work or whatever it was. I haven't
(16:48):
set my my pick them league because I've become quite
paranoid about the whole thing, because usually I do it
when we do the show, So having not done the
show earlier in the week, I hadn't done that. But
I must say this week I've tried to take a
few chances to see if we can catch them get
some points just for the fun of it.
Speaker 3 (17:07):
So we've got Brismark fifty nine, who didn't make any
picks last week and has dropped and rooted firmly to
the bottom now one hundred and four, followed by Bluey
Cow one hundred and eighteen. He's self Lee one hundred
and thirty four, Imeo fiveh one hundred and forty, Joe
Day one four one, and Dan Crowe also on one
four one. And how about the top league? Am I
(17:28):
still ahead of Danny?
Speaker 1 (17:30):
You are ahead of Danny because Danny sits currently in
fifth place of one hundred and fifty four points. He said,
he ninety nine has one hundred and fifty five points.
You come in the third place with one hundred and
sixty one. Seventy two equals Perfection is on one hundred
and sixty five and Robots seventy nine is one point
ahead with one hundred and sixty six, so it's getting
(17:53):
close at the top.
Speaker 3 (17:55):
He's getting close. Seventy two equals Perfection got a league
high fourteen correct prediction this week, alongside Rob Ashton who
also got fourteen, so well done for those two. And
Peter w ninety nine makes his first appearance in the
top five this season, so he's coming with a run
up the rails right at the end. Yeah, well done
(18:15):
Peter for getting into the top five.
Speaker 1 (18:17):
It's quite interesting. I was just thinking they're between the
gap between the bottom five and the top five. So
Dan CROs it's five places from the bottom one hundred
and five and Danny's five places from the top one
hundred and fifty four. It's not a huge gap over
that many weeks.
Speaker 3 (18:35):
Probably one guess a week, isn't it.
Speaker 1 (18:36):
Probably one guess a week almost, So it's actually relatively close,
isn't it. Yeah, just an observation.
Speaker 3 (18:48):
We'll be back with the next season with this, of course,
won't we lea It's been good fun throughout, But yes,
certainly looking a two horse race between Ray and Keith.
I believe he's seventy two equals perfection. So that's one
of those two. Look because though they're going to win
it with only three weeks remaining, I don't think I'm
going to be able to catch either of those two,
to be honest, we'll see.
Speaker 1 (19:10):
Right. Absolutely, So that had been said, should we move
on to this week's match up on Sunday?
Speaker 3 (19:17):
Yeah, absolutely, So we do have some Finns facts to
go through this week. Don't we about a Dolphins win?
Speaker 1 (19:23):
Would we do? Would you like to deliver this? So?
Speaker 3 (19:28):
A Dolphins win would give the Dolphins a five and
three home record for the twenty four season, and their
fifth consecutive season with a home winning record. Another winning
record also that's on the line is their end of
season winning record. They are one of four teams that
have had a winning record over the last four seasons
along We've said this before on the show, along with
(19:48):
the Bills, the Chiefs, and the Steelers. Now those three
teams are all going to secure another season with a
winning record. It would be nice if the Dolphins could
continue that trend of recent years. Absolutely, a Dolphins win
would improve Miami's lead to nine to six in the
all time regular season series with San Francisco, and a
Dolphins win would be Miami's third win in the last
(20:10):
four with San Francisco. And finally, a Dolphins win would
mark the thirty second win in the last fifty three
games started by quarterback two a tongue over lower, dating
back to the start of the twenty one season. See,
I find that really interestingly. I always think that San
Francisco have been one of Miami's spogy teams over the years.
But yeah, I didn't realize they'd lead nine to six
(20:31):
in the all time series, and if they do win,
it will be three of the last four.
Speaker 1 (20:35):
Yeah. I mean, it's funny, isn't it as well, especially
teams that are as old as obviously the forty nine ers,
but also the Dolphins that they don't think they've actually
played that many times seventeen times in total. I know,
obviously that's an AOFCNFC thing. Yeah, it just doesn't seem enough.
Speaker 3 (20:52):
Obviously, the big game that they played was Super Bowl,
isn't it back in early nineteen eighty five, so nearly
forty years ago, and that got me thinking earlier in
a week, knowing that this matchup was happening and the
significance it has for because it was our last Super
Bowl appearance. But it also was around the time that
season when I first started to support the Dolphins. So
(21:14):
I've actually been a fan for forty years this season, league,
would you.
Speaker 1 (21:18):
Believe two years? Yeah? Yeah, has been alive?
Speaker 3 (21:23):
Yeah, how long has it been? It's not been a
good forty years, I have to say, most of it.
But the Da Marino years were good, of course, because
there was there was always the Dolphins were always in
contention more often than not, and there was always that
hope that they would win it every year. But obviously
it's been a bit balanced.
Speaker 1 (21:39):
But also you've had the podcast since then, so that's
obviously a great time.
Speaker 2 (21:44):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (21:44):
Absolutely, So tell me about the forty nine is then, Ley,
how's their season going?
Speaker 1 (21:50):
Not as planned? I would say, as a team that
are coming off a Super Bowl defeat at the end
of last season, and they're currently six and eight and
fourth in the NFC West with a one percent chance
of making the playoffs. So it is slim. It's even
slimmer than the Dolphins chances. Right now, their offense ranks
ninth overall in the NFL, the rushing attack is eighth.
(22:11):
They're passing a rank is twelve. Obviously, those are obviously
reflective of where the team is over the course of
the season, but not necessarily where the roster is as
of today. They have sustained so many injuries over the
last couple of weeks, not going to listen all because
they're just so profuse, there's so many of them intensively.
(22:32):
They ranked third overall against the run, a second against
the pass. Seems to have been a bit of a
team lately, doesn't it. Playing teams that are good against
the pass and not so good against the runs. Definitely
need to try and find a way to get that
run game back on some sort of track.
Speaker 3 (22:49):
I mean forty nine. Ers have lost another running back today, potentially,
Isaac god Greendo is reportedly going to miss the game
due to hamstring injury, so they're not only they lost him,
but previously they've lost Christian McCaffrey, Elijah Mitchell, Jordan Mason,
so they seem to be losing all of their running
backs don't they, Which in addition to having injuries across
(23:13):
the roster and some personal tragedies as well, so they've
not had it easy this season. Of the forty nine ers.
Speaker 1 (23:22):
In English football leagues, we have a term on the
beach when the club finds their season over and players
ready to depart on their holidays. What's been going on
with the forty nine as they've struggled this season. Do
you consider them now on the beach as they're coming
to South Beach or I know that irks people when
they say it in commentary, I had to do it.
Speaker 3 (23:42):
Yeah, Well, they'll feel right at home then, won't they.
Speaker 1 (23:44):
Again?
Speaker 3 (23:44):
I mean, as at the time of recording, they have
a less than one percent chance of making the playoffs.
As we've said, however, Carle Shanahan, being the man he is,
won't let them check out and we want to get
a win over his friend and rival coach Mike. However,
they haven't had a great season by their usual high standards,
and you do wonder if they're suffering from a Super
Bowl hangover. Plus they've been hit hard by numerous events
(24:06):
that have caused dark cloud to linger over the team.
As I just mentioned, they had Ricky Pearsall being shot
in an instant Before the season started, there were rumors
Brandon Ayuk wanted to be traded in the absence of
a contract extension. Then during the season, they've as I said,
they've been badly hit by injuries, with fourteen players currently
on IR including McAffrey and Ayuk, and a further eight
(24:29):
missed the game against the Rams last week. A couple
of players have had personal tragedies, which of course impacts
the whole squad, and then more recently, linebacker Devondre Campbell
refused to play against the Rams and has just been
suspended for the rest of the season for conduct detrimental
to the team. Now, the forty nine ers have already
come out and said they won't use the remainder of
(24:50):
the season to find out who truly wants to be
on the team. So we'll see how that looks on Sunday.
But they do appear, on the face of it externally
to be in a bit of a state this season.
As you say, it's not gone according to lab.
Speaker 1 (25:04):
So you mentioned that you know the possibility of it
being a Super Bowl hangover, and I think if you
look back over they're deep runs they often have followed
by this kind of hangover. So where do you place
the blame for that? Is it? Not? Is? It's not?
Only where do you play the blame? But how would
you fix it? I don't know how you figure it.
Speaker 3 (25:24):
They're a strange one because they're either in contention for
Super Bowls and conference championships or they're not in contention
at all, isn't It's always one or the other, no,
no in between. But I think all of the aforementioned
factors I mentioned have been too much to cope with.
It's it's taken its toll, and the season has just
collapsed under its own weight. But at the end of
the day, the buck stops with the head coach, Kyle Shanahan,
(25:46):
at least with the performances on the field. The NFL
is a production business, and Shanahan will have to wear
the stain of the team's substandard performances. I was looking
at their results earlier and they have just two victories
against teams with a winning record, Seattle and Tampa Bay.
And that's a narrative we've heard before. And I've suffered
(26:07):
close losses to division opponents after squandering late leeds. I
saw clips of Shanahan's presser after the Rams loss, and
he just looked downbeat and broken. To be honest in
that press that he said he wants to I quote,
come back and play better football and challenge the character
around team. And this supports the view that are not
just going to roll over against the Dolphins. It's going
(26:29):
to be a tough one.
Speaker 1 (26:31):
Absolutely. I think they've got a thing to prove. I
think that this is another one of those matches this
year where there is a personal connection between head coaches
heading into the game. Like you say that the Niners
are always competing or out of contention, but again they
fall into that bracket of teams that aren't really in
(26:51):
contention for a top draft pick, which means they now
have to compete, do you know what I mean? And
there's a lot of bog players, like you say, with
the injuries, still in a situation where there's a lot
of players. Again I mentioned it earlier that you know,
people are playing for job set. They're trying to put
tape out there for other teams for the you know,
for the forty nine ers, but for other teams. You know,
that's just players with coaches as well. You know, everyone
(27:15):
is trying to do their do their best. I think
when you're in that situation, there's there's no real benefit
to losing, Whereas I think for some teams, like we've
had this conversation before, but I think there is an
incentive for teams to lose. And you know, if you're Jacksonville,
(27:37):
it's pretty appealing option. Might not be for the head coach,
but for the franchise, it's got to be an appealing option.
And any of the other teams that are sitting right
at the bottom there because it's you are technically rewarded
for not being that good. Say Niners aren't in that situation. Yeah,
it's going to be a tough game. The Dolphins need
(27:57):
to be need to try and bring their a game
because they need to secure a victory to keep to
keep the slim hopes alive. So with that being said,
do we move on to our past the victory? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (28:10):
Absolutely, join your first Yeah, okay that mind. For me,
it's very simple ly, they've just got to play a
complete game of football on both sides of the ball. Recently,
we've sinned to a lead the offense to a high
standard of play and on other occasions. We've seen the
defense step up too, and they did it at Houston
because they kept the Texans on offense relatively quiet. But
(28:31):
I'm not sure we've seen both units play well in
the same game. I don't recall a game where both
units have played well. It's usually been one or the other.
But with no margin for error, both units now need
to step up together. It's it's do or die. I
think the fourteen nine ers are there for the taking
if they really want it. Do the Dolphins want it
more than them? If they do, then hopefully they'll win
(28:53):
the game. But I don't think it's the case now
of hoping for the win. They've just got to go
out and deliver, haven't they absolutely?
Speaker 1 (29:03):
I like the way that you that you phrased it.
Do they want it more? Because this is one of
those weeks nothing else, nothing else matters. You need to
secure a victory one way or the other, and your
season depends on it because this will be the last
straw almost I think mathematically, if you lose, obviously it
still relies on other results and there's always ways I
(29:26):
think when you still got a small percentage chance if
all of those teams lost except the ones playing each other,
they'd probably still be a mathematical chance. But you know,
it puts you in that on the beach stage, doesn't
it if you go and drop this one. So yeah,
you need to need to do that, And for me,
you've got to find a way to get things going.
(29:49):
I think we've seen in the last two games possibly
things haven't been going all their way. Like you said,
on both sides of the ball, I think they struggled
more against the Jet and obviously that's the difference between
playing the second year quarterback and a Hall of Fame
quarterback in Aaron Rodgers. But the Jets moved the ball
pretty freely. It took a two terrific drives from the
offense to win that game. Then last week, like you said,
(30:11):
the defense steps up and the offense really struggled and
the timing seemed off. I think the change at tackle
made a huge difference. And when you see the way
the run game performed, and I know the run game
has struggled a little bit over recent weeks, but last
week especially, you saw a lot of instances where you
ended up with three linemen blocking two guys and then
(30:31):
a free rusher and nowhere for a running back to go,
and that's not something that we've seen. When the run
game has been good, the blocking has been superb across
the board, and it's a huge obviously, it's a huge
change to switch out two tackles and have a rooky
playing in Patrick Paul and I thought he played really well.
That this is not a dig at those guys, But
(30:52):
I think if you're trying to run a complex a
complex scheme, having two guys start in their first games
at the positions is not a position you really want
to be in. And I think it really hurt the
Dolphins last week. And if that means simplifying the run
games slightly to do only what those guys do best
in regards to blocking, do that because you have to
(31:14):
get on track. You have to keep things moving. We
know the Dolphins are generally better at home, but you
need this to be you need things to be on
track because you know you have to go back on
the road. You know you're going on the road for
the last two weeks of the season. This is your
last chance to have that home field advantage. So I
hope the crowd gets behind them and that we can
stay positive and support the team get through a win
(31:36):
this week, because say that gives us the momentum. As
you said earlier, the most important thing for the Dolphins
is to win out and the Chips were four where
they do. But the games you have coming up, you
have every chance to beat the San Francisco forty nine
ers on Sunday. You have them in a position that
at the beginning of the season you didn't think they
(31:56):
would be in, so you have to take advantage of that.
And then you go on the road to play a
three win in Cleveland Browns team and then play a
team that you've just beat, so you have the opportunity
to reel off three victories. But it's do or die now.
Speaker 3 (32:11):
They've played a couple of good defenses over the last week.
The Jets at home were ranked over all number three
overall I think when they played, and the Texans last
week were a good defense as well. The forty nine
ers have, as you said earlier, ranked currently third overall.
I think yeah, overall rank of third, passing ranks second,
so they've got a good defense as well. And the
thing that concerns me lee is last week. And I
(32:34):
don't want to keep popping on about last week. But
Houston's game plan for nullifying the Dolphins on offense work
perfectly because DeMarco Ryans knows Mike McDaniel inside and out,
having been coaching alongside him and with him for many years,
And the same thing applies to Carl Shanahan this week
as well. Shanahan perhaps obviously he's very familiar with the Dolphins'
(32:57):
offensive scheme and we'll certainly know the way to tack that.
So my concern is if the Houston Texans can do
it really well last week, there certainly the possibility that
the forty nine ers will be doing exactly the same
this week. Given all of these coaches are from that
same coaching tree.
Speaker 1 (33:15):
Do you think the difference is offense versus defense in
regards to Damico Ryans being a defensive coach, taking on
a scheme that he'd seen for such a long period
of time in San Francisco and knowing, you know what
Carl Shanahan would do as well as Mike McDaniel and
their tendencies as opposed to, for instance, when the Dolphins
(33:37):
played the Rams, Sean McVay knows the same stuff, but
he's coaching on more on offense defense, so it's not
such an advantage. Obviously, we saw the same thing play
out against Green Bay. They seem to have answers for everything.
So how do you think that makes a difference this
week heading into the game with Carl Shanahan being more
of an offensive guy.
Speaker 3 (33:59):
I think you you hit the nail on the head there,
DeMarco Ryans is a defensive guy, isn't he, and coaching
together in that same coaching tree, seeing them in practice
every day, He's going to know the weak spots of
that offensive scheme, isn't he? More so than an offensive
coach would perhaps do. So it was it's significant. I
think in that sense you're right in terms of Shanahan
being more of an offensive guy. He's going to still
(34:21):
have that knowledge, isn't he, and of the weaknesses of
that kind of scheme. That's why he's a head coach.
So there is some emphasis there around the tendencies between
offensive and defensive. But at the end of the day,
they're head coaches. They're the best in the world at
what they do for a reason, so they're going to
be intelligent enough to identify the strengths and weaknesses whatever
their coaching tendencies, I guessed.
Speaker 1 (34:41):
And are we slightly ignoring Miami's ability to do exactly
the same thing. You're right, but knows what they want
to do and is able to help his defense. We
see his scheme all the time. I don't think there's
an answer to this. It's just interesting to try and
tak it down and see where a team may or
(35:01):
may not have an advantage.
Speaker 3 (35:03):
It's a fascinating kind of chess game, isn't it. Because
it worked for the Dolphins when they played the Rams,
it didn't work for them when they played the Texans
or the Packers. So there are many factors that go
into it. Yeah, you can have a game plan, but
it's all about how you counter the game plan, isn't it?
For both sides of the boys? Fascinating?
Speaker 1 (35:21):
Be interesting to cev the a team can go away
from what how diverse they can be from their general
philosophy to try and catch out the other team. I
know you can't change things too much, but you think
that this would be one of those seasons where that
would be an interesting wrinkle to have where you go
slightly off your own tendencies because you were playing so
(35:45):
many people who were familiar with the scheme we just
mentioned four I think throughout the season. So yeah, interesting
stuff heading into Sunday's matchup. But with that being said,
do you have a weather report for Sunday?
Speaker 3 (35:58):
The weather this Sunday is going to be a mile
twenty two degrees and cloudy at kickoff times, so not's
going to be overpowering by any means. And of course
only part of the game is going to be in
daytime because it's a later kickoff, so we're going to
get a lot of the action under the lights at
hard Rock Stadium, which is always a great spectacle, isn't it.
Having done that a couple of times over the last
(36:20):
couple of years, that I do love night games. That's
there's something about night games generally, whether it's Dolphins, English,
Premier League games, whatever, there's something different about night games.
Speaker 1 (36:30):
I think, yeah, there is. I think it changes the
atmosphere almost feels closer rather than open. I don't sure
that's absolute nonsense, but it makes sense to me that
it feels I don't know, it makes everything feel close.
Speaker 3 (36:46):
One thing we have, yeah, one thing we haven't touched
on this week that we have mentioned it before is
the Niners are obviously having to travel from west to east.
Is that going to be much of a factor in
the overall scheme of things, do you think?
Speaker 1 (37:01):
I absolutely hope. So they blew a lead in the
Super Bowl. It kicked off in the daylight and ended
in the note right, Yeah they did. That was our
half rog Stadium just saying we can hope. I hope
they haven't learned from that experience.
Speaker 3 (37:19):
Yeah, I mean, I'm interested in seeing Brock Pardy play
because they want to still give him a long term contract.
I believe they haven't quite done that yet. Obviously, Dan
Marino is his all time hero, wasn't he So be
interesting to see whether he's extra fired up, a little
bit extra because he's going to be playing in front
of his hero.
Speaker 1 (37:37):
And also it could be an interesting full circle moment,
couldn't it. I Mean, he came in to start that
game again, sorry to play in his first game against
the Dolphins after Jimmy Garoppolo went down and beat the
Dolphins on that occasion. So this might be a good
time for some payback. So I think, as you mentioned
(37:58):
this in a nine to twenty five kickoff, we're going to
be able to watch it here on game Pass. I
think Sky have announced their games. It's not the Dolphins.
Unsurprisingly at this stage of the season, you're just really
seeing the matchups that are for division leads and seeding
in the playoffs right now, and that doesn't include teams
that are sitting with a seven and one percent from
getting into the playoffs. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (38:18):
I think we'll be lucky to see the Dolphins on
Sky again this season unless they make the playoffs. League
with games away to Cleveland and the Jets. As we said,
I don't think those two are necessarily going to be
the ones chosen by Sky. The Jets game is to
be confirmed, though, so if they some reason put it
on a Saturday and that will be possibly covered by Sky,
(38:39):
won't it.
Speaker 1 (38:40):
Again, this is going to depend on results in the
next two weeks, and you hope to be in a
situation where that is even under consideration, because it means
you've probably got to the stage where it's in people's
thoughts that you may qualify. But I think that's it
from us side, unless you have anything else.
Speaker 3 (38:55):
Yeah, I just thought we're seeing as it's Christmas coming up, Lee,
I just thought we could chat a lit about what
our plans are, respectively for Christmas, and do you have
any Christmas wishes or do you wish for any Dolphins
related presence coming your way this year?
Speaker 1 (39:08):
So I always like Dolphins related presents. People tell me
I'm hard to buy for, and I'm like, I don't
think that's true. If you buy something to do with
the Miami Dolphins, I'm probably gonna love it. So it
seems pretty simple to me. And actually, as I say that,
I have my secret Sandi gift on my desk next
to me as I record here at work, and it
(39:28):
is a Miami Dolphins trivia book. So someone definitely took
that route, and I'm pleased that they did. Say.
Speaker 3 (39:35):
Actually, ly what we should be doing in future is
taking our quiz questions from that book.
Speaker 1 (39:41):
Yes, maybe we should try that, but yeah, other than that,
it will be at home with the family. Definitely enjoy
some stress free football when the Dolphins are not playing
over Christmas. I quite enjoy watching the NBA on Christmas
Day as well, to the displeasure of the rest of
(40:01):
my family, but to at least have it on in
the background, because I just like like sport like that,
and I find it fascinating that there's games being played
on Christmas days. It's not really a thing that I
would see happening here, So yeah, that always intrigues me.
But how about you, simon heading into Christmas week.
Speaker 3 (40:19):
Spending time with the family. I tend to switch off
from sport and TV on Christmas Day unless the Dolphins
are playing, of course, and they did against the Packers
a couple of years back, so I tend to switch off,
but I shall be there watching at a more reasonable time.
As we said, this coming Sunday, but also following a
lot of the games because it's playoff Fantasy weekend, isn't it?
(40:39):
For a lot of semi finals this weekend?
Speaker 1 (40:41):
And I mean.
Speaker 3 (40:44):
Four leagues where I'm in the playoffs at the minute,
So it remains to be seen whether I get to
any Fantasy super Bowls, but I'll certainly be keeping an
eye on a lot of the other games going on
this season.
Speaker 1 (40:56):
Absolutely. I am actually in a final which is this week,
and it's a league with not so many teams in it,
but that's the first time I've ever been in one,
so kind of exciting, kind of lucky, probably lose, but
I'm going to give it a go. See if we
can get that team over the line. And I've got
another team in another league in the playoffs as well.
Speaker 3 (41:15):
How many Dolphins players have you got in these teams?
He said the other week that you.
Speaker 1 (41:20):
Sunk my team last week in another league, that I
got knocked out of the playoffs in last week. But
I have faith in the guys and they're staying in
my other teams. And I'm looking at one now and
I've got three Dolphins players in there, but obviously one
of those is General Wardle, so that would be dependent
on if he plays or not. And how about the
other one. So I have in front of me on
(41:43):
two and three in that team as well.
Speaker 3 (41:48):
Just a quick note hot of the press, Kender Lamb
was back at Dolphins practice today, as was Tyreek Kill,
Klais Campbell, and Jordan Poyer. So hopefully they'll all be
hinuing to trend in the right direction and play without
any issues on Sunday. Absolutely, So it's I think that's
(42:09):
it from us then, Ley, isn't it. I have nothing
more to bring you this week other than to wish
all of our listeners a very happy Christmas. We hope
you enjoy the festivities. But in the meantime, thanks again
for listening, and we shall talk to you very soon.
