Speaker 1 (00:03):
It's now officially open.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
This is Draft season, a rare draft season in studio
with Tony Pauline.
Speaker 1 (00:15):
Tony, how are you, man?
Speaker 3 (00:16):
I'm okay a little believe that the draft is over.
You know things, Things are gonna be a little bit
easier than the past couple of weeks. And uh, but
it was an eventful three days, wasn't it.
Speaker 1 (00:29):
Yes, it was an eventful three days.
Speaker 2 (00:30):
We'll talk about that and a whole lot more right
here on Draft Season, brought to you by Moody's, a
proud sponsor of the New York Giants and a partner
of the Giants Decode Risk, Unlock Opportunity. Learn more at
Moody's dot com. All right, Tony, we're gonna split this
into two.
Speaker 1 (00:47):
We're gonna do our NFC first.
Speaker 2 (00:51):
We're gonna do AFC later in the week with a
focus on on the quarterback position with the shud Or
Sanders and quin yours bit. So we'll do that for
you in two parts, this one. The first one will
be going up on Monday, which would be the NFC
and some general takeaways and some of the best players
that are still left on the board. So, Tony, why
don't we start here with what were the kind of
(01:11):
major themes of this draft as you got through it,
Surprises and kind of other things that you were thinking
about as you went along.
Speaker 3 (01:16):
A major theme in the media obviously was the Shador
Sanders precipitous drop down draft boards. But I think overall,
for me, I was surprised the running backs went later
than they did in the sense that I expected a
ton of running backs to come off the board late
in round two through the third round. We saw a
lot of those third round backs end up as Day
(01:38):
three picks. I also think that we knew that the
cornerback class was not a good one, and I think
that bared itself out. I mean, the cornerbacks went later
than expected. A lot of the guys you expected to
come off the board weren't drafted. There were some names
that you didn't expect to be drafted, you thought were
(01:58):
free agents that were taken late in Day three. I
think the overall theme is when I broke it down,
when I looked at each team, there's no team out
there that I think had a head scratching draft.
Speaker 1 (02:12):
There was no really bad draft.
Speaker 3 (02:14):
I agree with you as far as what I could see,
and I picked and I and I looked hard because
I had to write an article about the best teams
that did well and the teams he did poorly.
Speaker 2 (02:23):
And Tony loves killing people like that's his favorite thing
to do. He wants to put people over the calls.
He wants to beat him at that.
Speaker 3 (02:29):
That's a totally conservative, let's say, in my entire life.
But they weren't really weren't any bad drafts where you're like, Wow,
what the heck was this team thinking? You said, well,
maybe why didn't they address this position, which we'll get
into or these areas. I think all the teams came
out of it pretty good. Now, whether that's whether as
(02:50):
the result of the fact that this was a mediocre
draft and you know, there were a lot of second
round picks and third round picks, or whether you know
they're just to kick in gear. I was surprised with
some of the Day two picks. There were some guys
selected the Day two who I thought were more undrafted
free agent types. But those things happen.
Speaker 2 (03:09):
And we're gonna go a class by class here in
terms of team by team again, I mentioned we do
the NFC today. We'll start out west, work our way east.
So let's go to the Arizona Carlos first. Tony Walter
Nolan gets to pick sixteen. Makes sense a good selection.
They needed his love help on the defensive front. Will Johnson,
cornerback out of Michigan dropped all the way to the
middle of the second round. Can't argue with the value there.
(03:30):
Jordan Birch, I think we both expect him to be
a third round type of pick. That's where he goes.
The defensive end. Outside linebacker out of Oregon. Cody Simon,
linebacker at of Ohio State, is one of your favorites.
You're a big Cody Simon guy in the fourth round,
denzol Burke as teammate, the cornerback in round five, and
then Hayden Connor and Kitten Crawford out of Nevada who
actually has a good size testing thing.
Speaker 1 (03:52):
I think that's a good promising picking round seven.
Speaker 3 (03:54):
I think overall, I mean big ten flavor in this
when you look at it, Michigan, Oregon to Ohio State guys.
Walter Nolan could be tremendous value with the sixteenth selection.
I mean he's a playmaker, he's a good system fit.
Just has to get a little bit bigger and stronger.
Will Johnson if it wasn't for the injury. Will Johnson
is mid first round talent. They got him in the
middle of the second round. So if he's able to
(04:16):
stay healthy and try and get his play back to
where it was in twenty twenty three, I think they
hit a home run with this pick. Jordan Birch another guy.
He was struggled with inconsistency and injury throughout his career,
first at South Carolina, then at Oregon. If he's ever
able to pull it all together, this is another potential
home run. Cody Simon is solid three down linebacker. I
(04:37):
thought he's more third round value. They got him in
the fourth round. Denzel Burke has shown ability in the past,
but he really hasn't played well. Didn't play all that
well last year. And you mentioned k Crawford started his
career in Texas. A size, speed guy with a lot
of upside who really just needs to complete his game.
Speaker 1 (04:55):
All right, let's go to the Rams here.
Speaker 2 (04:56):
They had six elections Tony after trading out of round one,
they get a first round pick last year, which I thought,
by the way, was a really good trade for them.
Speaker 1 (05:03):
I know it doesn't help you.
Speaker 2 (05:04):
Now, but I thought they got really good value in
that trade down with the Falcons. So in the second
round they picked Terrence Ferguson out of Oregon. We all
kind of felt like the Rams would want a tight
end in this draft. Last they get one, Josiah Stewart
in round three. That's where I had him, the outside
linebacker out of Michigan, the edge player, Jarquiz Hunter. He'll
fit right into that backfield. They want guys that'll put
their head down and bang it, and they have it
(05:25):
with Blake Rum, they have it with Kyron Williams, and
now they have it also a jarquiz Hunter. Ty Hamilton.
I think fifth round is a really good value for him,
defensive tackle out of Ohio State. And then Chris Paul,
the linebacker and cut out of Mumfield, the wide receiver
of Pittsburgh who had a nice Shrine Bowl.
Speaker 3 (05:40):
I think the only thing that surprised me here is
the Rams didn't address the cornerback position. I think when
both of those top tight ends were off the board,
you know, they found themselves on the outside looking at
the position. Remember a year ago they wanted brock Bowers,
So they move into the second round. Get terres Ferguson.
I had him as a third round pick, but he regardless,
he saw it in all areas. He's a good locker,
he's a good pass catcher. He's not gonna split the seam.
(06:02):
But he's a guy that you know when his number
is called, he'll step up. I thought Josiah Stewart was
outstanding value where he went. It is surprising though, that
they take another undersized pass rushers. Granted, he said, they say,
you know, you can never have enough pass rushers. I
guess the that's what the Rams are buying into jar
Quees Hunter. You know you mentioned his tenacity, his physicality.
(06:23):
He's also fast. He's explosive. I mean he can run
the daylight. If there's a small amount of room, he's
going to beat defenders into the open field. Ty Hamilton again,
they like those smaller three technique types. We saw it
last year with the kid they took from Florida State
who had a great rookie season in the league. Ty
Hamilton is another one of those smaller but quick, explosive.
(06:45):
It plays very.
Speaker 1 (06:46):
Hard chris Ball.
Speaker 3 (06:48):
Some people will say they got great value with him
in the fifth round. That's where I had him all along.
He just never really lit it up for me. But
he's a I think he's a nickel linebacker, rotational player.
Cannaut of Mumfield. I had him as a seventh round
free agent. Not big, not fast, but dependable, runs good,
it gets open and catches everything through in his direction.
Speaker 2 (07:08):
All right, let's go on, and one more thing on
the Rams. Taylor got picked four picks before Ferguson did,
but they did pick Ferguson over a Royal, which I
thought was interesting. But I think mc veigh wants more
of a two way tight end, and I think that's why.
Speaker 3 (07:22):
They wanted that they've always had in the roster.
Speaker 1 (07:24):
Yeah, a guy that can block.
Speaker 2 (07:25):
I think Ferguson has probably a little bit more blocking
potential than a Royal. All right, let's stick in the
NFC West. Let's go to the Niners. Eleven picks in
his drafts of the forty nine ers, and they gonna
have same thing next year because they lost a lot
of free agents. They're gonna keep racking up these compacts
and they have to make the most of these picks, Tony,
and I think they did with some of these selections.
Curious to get your take. Michael Williams at eleven good
(07:48):
value out of Georgia. Alfred Collins in the second round.
I thought maybe he was a leader second round, early
third round pick. But he's certainly a big body that
can help you stopped to run a defensive tackle, Nick
more Than out of Oklahoma State in round three, along
with up to Stout the corner out of Western Kentucky.
I love the CJ. West pick in round number four.
I think that's really good value. I'm not sure there's
much difference betwe him and Alfred Collins, to be honest
with you, with the way I had those two guys ranked.
(08:10):
Jordan Watkins wide receiver Ole miss also on round four.
Pair of round five picks. I know you love the
Jordan James selection. They're at running back, he'll back up
Christian McCaffrey. Marquis Siegle out of Kansas State also on
round five, and then in the out of quarterback Curtis Rourke.
I think a good developmental spot for him with Kyle
Shanahan a round seven Iowa guard Connor Colby, and then
Junior Bergen, the wide receiver out of Montana.
Speaker 3 (08:33):
You know we knew they wanted defense going into the
draft because they lost a lot of free agency. They
also cut some guys, which was surprising. They got the
guy that they wanted, mckail Williams. They had been on
the phone looking to trade up into the top ten
to get Mikail Williams. When Carolina took Ted McMillan. When
the Saints took the offensive line, McKelvin Banks Williams fell
(08:53):
in their lapse. Very happy, great system fit. As is
Alfred Collins. I would agree with you. I had Collins
as a third round pick. We've seen him with the
Javon kinlaws of the past. They like those athletic, quick,
explosive defensive lineman. Collins has just got to learn to
play to his size. Nick Morton, I love the pick.
I had Nick Martin as a third round selection. He
(09:14):
is an explosive, fierce, violent, one gap defender who goes
sideline to sideline and plays with great speed up in stout.
We saw him at the senior ball. Is he a corner?
Is he safety? He's a diningback. I thought this a
little bit early. CJ. West, I'm with you. I had
him a little bit later in a draft but that's
your gap occupier. That's the guy who's got great size
and get great strength and will free things up for
(09:36):
the other players on the defensive line. Big fan of
the both receivers that they took, Jordan Walkins from Old
Miss in the fourth round and Junior Bergen of Montana,
who no one talks about. Matt Bergen is a smaller guy,
exceptionally quick runs great routes. Can also help as a
return specialist. You mentioned my fondness for Jordan James. I
thought Curtis Rourke was an excellent bit in the seventh
(09:58):
round with him. They hit a home run with Brock
Berdy in the seventh round. Why not Curtis Rock. You
don't need him to play. He's coming off that torn
acl which he played with all of twenty twenty four.
He improved his game playing with the injury last year
in Indiana, and he's shown Curtis Rock he has the
tools and when he got good coaching, he elevated his game.
(10:18):
So I think that was an outstanding selection by him.
Speaker 2 (10:21):
All right, let's go to the Seattle Seahawks. Tony eleven
picks for them. You now that Gray's able pick whoever
gave you that information. You've been all over that for
almost two weeks. Good job out of you. They pick
him at eighteen. Nick Emmin Warie, the safety out of
South Carolina. I thought good value pick for him at
thirty five second rounder Elijah Royal another second round pick.
Seahawks had a lot of picks in this draft, folks.
(10:42):
I thought good value pick for him at fifty. Jalen Morrow,
good developmental quarterback in round three to goal behind Sam Darnold.
I like that fit for him and for the team.
Riley Mills and this is all fifth round three, fifth rounders.
Now Riley Mills a defensive end Notre Dame. Love the
Tory Horton value in a round five out of Colorado State.
Speaker 1 (10:59):
I think he's a chance he could.
Speaker 2 (11:00):
Start for them this year if you look at their
depth Chartoni if him starting is not out of the
question for me. Robbie Oots the running the he's tight
end right out of Alabama. Made a mistake on the
oh maybe the thing to have him as a fullback. Huh,
that's why he's listened as a running back here, all right.
Then in the sixth round, Bryce Cabldoo out of Kansas
then they had Damien Martinez in round seven man offensive tackle,
(11:24):
Mason Richmond of Iowa, and then Rooky White out of UNLV,
who's a nice little receiver who had a nice little
Shrine Bowl.
Speaker 3 (11:30):
I mean, he's able. Like you said, I knew that
they wanted him. They took him versat alignment. They need
a lot of help on the offensive line, and he's
able to to play multiple positions. Listened to. His offensive
guard was a tackle at North Dakota State. Some people
project him to center Nick Emminawari. Listen, this is a
franchise that had great success with an oversized safety by
the name of Cam Chancellor. Nick Emminawari is bigger, and
(11:53):
he's more physical, and he's more athletic than Cam Chancellors.
So they hope they hit lightning in a bottle twice.
Elijah Royer was one of my favor tight ends. I've
gone on record saying I believe he will be one
of the better tight ends to come from this class.
More of a pass catcher down the field. Got a
guy Jaln Milroe. I mean, could he end up in
a better spot. Jalen Milroe has all the physical skills
you want in a starting quarterback. He just needs a
(12:15):
lot of work. And the Seattle Seahawks, as we've seen,
have been able to develop quarterbacks, whether it be Russell Wilson,
whether it be Gino Smith. They've got the ingredients there.
And I think Jaylen Milroe ended up in a great spot.
Riley Mills thought it was a little bit early off
the injury, but he's a type of player you want
in the locker room and on the field. Tory Horton,
you know they needed help with receivers. They lost a
(12:37):
lot of receivers trade DK Metcalf had cut some guys.
Hort and I would agree with you can line up
as a slot on or a third receiver on Sunday,
cable do another interior alignment. I think he's gonna surprise.
We saw him at the Shrineball. He was a solid
player throughout his Kansas career and then had a real
good proday. Damian Martinez was one of the steals of
(12:58):
the draft. I think injury and some other issues got
led to his fall into the seventh round. But again,
you know Seattle has had success with these bigger, explosive
running backs in the past. I think Martinez is one
of those guys that they'll have success with.
Speaker 2 (13:16):
Yeah, trapped behind a couple of good young backs right now.
But we'll see if that depth chart opens up at
some point in Seattle. Just a couple of notes on
the West before we go to our next division here, Tony.
I thought Seattle probably had the best draft of this group.
Speaker 1 (13:28):
I thought were really good.
Speaker 2 (13:30):
The ram that thought made a really nice trade, even
though that reduced their draft class issue.
Speaker 1 (13:34):
I thought they got some good players.
Speaker 2 (13:36):
I was surprised the Niners didn't walk away with some
type of offensive tackle at some point in their class.
I thought they could use one of those. And I
was surprised the Cardinals and I wind up with a
wide receiver at some point in the draft too. I
thought they could use up with that spot.
Speaker 3 (13:46):
I had them taking a receiver in my mock first
round draft. I think the Niners, I'm surprised that they
didn't take a corner at some point in the seven rounds,
and especially with all the picks that they had, and
the Seahawks, I would agree with you. You know, you
look at Zabel, you look at him and Wari, you
look at Arroya, you look at three potential starters, right
there hort and a guy you expect to produce as
(14:08):
a rookie. And you know Jalen Milroe is either quarterback
or the future. If not any they are able to
produce him, you got a chip to trade, as the
New England Patriots did under Bill Belichick all those years.
Speaker 1 (14:19):
Absolutely.
Speaker 2 (14:20):
All right, let's go to the NFC South, Now, Tony,
We'll start with the Atlanta Falcons. They do not have
a lot of picks here. They didn't have a lot
of picks coming in. They had even fewer picks coming out.
So Jalen Walker in the first round. They end up
trading next year's first round pick to move up to
twenty six. Though, Chase, like James Pearce, saw a couple
of edge players Xavier Watts, and of round three, I
(14:40):
thought that was a nice value. There a pick ninety six,
the safety at a Notre Dame, then another safety at
picked one to eighteen, Billy Bowman out of Oklahoma. He'll
play the slide a little bit too, and then jack
Nell's at offensive tackle Wisconsin. Look, I'm always leary about
trading your next year's number one pick, Tony, because you
never know what your record is going to be. In
how your season's going to go. A lot of times,
(15:01):
if it's not for a quarterback, I won't even consider
doing it. We saw two teams do that this year.
Trading next year is wondering for a non quarterback. And look,
James Piers is a very fast, productive edge rusher. But
it was a steep price to pay to get back
into that first round.
Speaker 3 (15:15):
We'll see. I mean, I mean they wanted to improve
their defense, and you have to say, on paper right now,
it looks like their defense was improved. Yep. Jaylen Walker,
why did he fall? I was told, and I wrote
my notes before DA two that Jalen Walker has a
shoulder issue. He may need a surgical procedure which would
set him back. That's why he fell down. People don't
know what he's read, what he's going to be ready.
(15:36):
James Pearce was actually the player that Atlanta wanted at fifteen,
but you know when they saw the opportunity to move
up and get him, they got two players. Jalen Walker,
who could play linebacker or rush the passer. James Pierce,
who is a terrific edge rusher and should only get
better as he physically matures and puts on more bulk.
I mean, it is a steep price to pay, but
(15:59):
if you hit on both of these pass rushers, your
set for the next next decade at the position. I
thought they double dipped on the safeties. Jefvier Watch went
a round later than expected. Billy Bowman went a round later,
and they compliment each other. Bowman's more of a free
safety sideline to sideline type of guy, Zavvier watches better
between the numbers. Jack Nelson in the seventh round was
(16:20):
real good value. A lot of people, including myself, thought
that Jack Nelson, excuse me, would be a top sixty
pick coming out of the sophomore season. His game is
kind of leveled off. Played left tackle at Wisconsin, projections
to the right side. You get a guy like that
in the seventh round. Don't know if he makes the roster,
but at the very least practice squad player.
Speaker 1 (16:38):
All right, let's go to the Carolina Panthers Tony. They
had eight picks.
Speaker 2 (16:41):
Tenoro McMillan, T mac hat picked number eight. I thought
they go defense there, but they addressed defense shortly. But
again I thought McMillan was probably grade wise that was
the right selection there. Nick Gordon out of Texas. A
and m at picked number fifty one. I think good
value there. Pick fifty one for Scrton Prince Uman Mealen
out of Ole Miss in the third round.
Speaker 1 (17:03):
I think that's a sweet spot for him.
Speaker 2 (17:04):
Trevor ATN and in round four the running back out
of Georgia. Remember their first round pick out of Texas
or second round pick out of Texas last year to
retwards ACL, so he's not going to be ready. Treble
Hubbard is there as their starter, so they'll be the backup.
Lathan Ransom out of Ohio State. Also on round four
the safety and then the big defensive tackle, Cam Jackson.
I thought good pick by them to try to solidify
(17:26):
that run defense next to Brown. Their big defensive tackle,
Mitchell Evans, I think in round five is a good
pick of two way tight end to kind of play
with Tommy Tremble and then Jimmy Horne out of Colorado.
Round six, speedy, quick wide receiver. I thought Carolina did well.
Speaker 3 (17:39):
I think this kind of changed the tone of the draft.
When they set selected Teed McMillan with the A selection,
everyone thought, as you said, they were going to go
pass rusher. Mickel Williams maybe jalm Walker, and.
Speaker 1 (17:49):
We thought McMillan might get the Dallas at twelve. He
never did.
Speaker 3 (17:52):
But you know what, good for Carolina. As I said
in the preview show that we did on wfa N,
when you asked who my favorite players were, it was
teed McMillan. He is a large, game controlling receiver. He's reliable,
he's dependable, he's fundamentally sound, he's football smart. He's not
the fastest guy in the world. It's not the quickest
guy in the world. Some people were just kept leaning
(18:13):
on comments that he made a couple of years ago
that he doesn't watch film. Well, he didn't watch film,
but you know what, he went out and produced every
single week and he was always my number one rated
receiver throughout this entire process, and he was the number
one receiver selected. Was very happy to see that. I
thought Scourton was great value at fifty one. There was
talk that he could end up in the bottom part
(18:34):
of round one. He didn't. He's an outstanding system fit.
People talked about the weight fluctuations playing at two hundred
and eighty pounds coming into the combine two fifty five.
I was told Texas A and m had their players
purposely heavier than they should have been, and his playing
weight is about two hundred and sixty five pounds two
year producer going back to his days at Purdue, Prince.
Speaker 2 (18:56):
Uman and by the way, just real quick, they did
that with samor Stewart too. Yes, he played a lot
higher than it actual weight as well.
Speaker 3 (19:01):
So Stewart, as will talk about, should have been about
two ninety ninety five. He's playing over three hundred and
ten pounds of Texas A and M. Princeton and play
whatever's last name is, Sorry, prince Ley, I'll just say Princely.
Speaker 1 (19:11):
Uman, Mealen, thank you you wilcome listen.
Speaker 3 (19:15):
I had him as a fourth round pick. He's a
guy when he's hitting on all cylinders will impact the game.
He's tall, he has a thick build, He's athletic, he
creates havoc. The problem is the fire is not always
going with him with him. So if they get somebody
to give him a boot in the rear end and
play the way, he's capable of every single down. They
got a player there, good speed rusher for trebar atn
(19:37):
and the fourth round I thought was great value, very
creative ball carrier, sort of like his brother, outstanding position
receiver out of the backfield. Kind of runs hot and cold,
and you saw that last year at Georgia. But when
he's on his game, he is tough to stop. Lathan Ransom,
solid overall safety who rebounded from injury. Cam Jackson a
(19:57):
bigger interior lineman. Mitchell another two ways tight end, good
pass catcher, is a short and intermediate range pass target,
can also block. And then Jimmy Horn, like you said,
I mean they had four shird door. Sanders had four
terrific receivers to throw the ball to a Colorado. Jimmy
Horn was one of them. A little bit smaller but speedier.
Guy needs some space to work.
Speaker 2 (20:19):
All right, let's go to the door with Saints. Here
they had nine picks. Tony Kelvin Banks aid ninth overall.
He was one of my guys with the first round
grade good pick at number nine. They continued to invest
in the trenches and again and again and again and again.
Then they go quarterback at pick forty. It had gotten
around the league that Tyler Shook was the Saints Sky
the quarterback that they liked. They might need to play
(20:39):
right away with the Derek Carr shoulder injury, so he's
picked forty. Vernon Broughton out of Texas at picked seventy one,
kind of a run stoffing defensive tackle Joni Sanker out
of Virginia in round three at ninety three, Danny Stutsman
fourth round there linebacker Oklahoma, Quincy Riley fourth round corner Louisville.
Devin Neal, great value of running back out of Kansas
in round number six, Maliki Moteveo out of Ucla in
(21:03):
round seven alone with the Deil Diggs out of Syracuse.
I think those are two good value picks in round seven.
Speaker 1 (21:07):
I thought the say, it's that nice draft on paper?
Speaker 3 (21:09):
They did? You know, I like Kelvin Banks. We both
like him. Potential guard, maybe a tackle. Unfortunately, you know
New Orleans is the place where offensive lineman go to die,
because I mean that's a truth be told because it
continually take offensive lineman in the first round, some of
the second round, and they were always looking for offensive line,
which lets me believe there's a problem there. Tyler Shuck.
(21:30):
I mean he, after cam Ward, was probably the most
NFL ready quarterback, and like John said, you may need
him to play based on Derek Carr's injury. But the
fact is this is we don't know which Tyler shuck
we're getting. Are we getting the Tyler shock in twenty
twenty four? If so, good for the Saints. If we
see the inconsistency and the injured quarterback that we saw
at Texas Tech for four years, that's gonna be a problem.
(21:52):
Vernon Broughton was selected probably around earlier than I thought,
but he's a big, athletic interior guy. Jonas Sanker had
been moving up draft boards. We saw him at the
Senior Bowl, made some nice plays, can play his free
safety position. Not a liability and courage. Danny Stutsman is
a two down run defending linebacker who felt because of
injury concerns Quincy Riley. I thought he went right where
(22:13):
he should have gone. He's more of a nickelback. Devin
neil John likes him a lot. He's big, he's fast,
runs with a bit of an upright style. As far
as I'm concern does Mataveo of Moliky Moniveo the tight
end out of UCLA. He's efficient, he's good, but he's
not fast and he's not super athletic. Can't say that
for their seventh round pick for Deal Diggs. I love
(22:34):
this kid. I thought he was a fourth round, fifth
round value all along. He's fast, he's explosive Texas, A
and M as well as Syracuse. He's all over the
place making plays. I thought there was an outstanding selection.
Speaker 2 (22:48):
All right, let's go to the bucceteers. Only six selections
in this draft, Tony. They do not have a sixth
round pick. Otherwise one pick in each round A mechag
Buka a nice player, but a wide receiver in round
one when you're already of Mike Evans and just signed
Chris Godwin. Round two Benjamin Morrison. I love watching his
phone call. He was very emotional that he got drafted
by the Bucks. That he was crying, you know, talking
(23:11):
to the Bucks. Jacob Parrish at of Kansas State Corner
on around three and pick eighty four, David Walker, the
kind of misshaped edge rusher for lack of a better term,
at a Central Arkansas. Elijah Roberts at of SMU, I
think has potentially be a really nice edge rusher. And
then Test Johnson, my guy seventh round out of Oregon.
I was happy he got drafted.
Speaker 3 (23:31):
You know, the Buka pick surprised a lot of people,
even the Abuka camp, because they had not spent a
lot of time with him. He had just got a
visit with them. There had not been a lot of calls,
so when I spoke with him, they were even surprised
about that. But you know what, Mike Evans can't go
on forever. I mean, they got to start to get
some guys in there to replace Mike Evans. I think
(23:52):
of Buca, he's efficient, he's reliable. I'd like to see
him taking next the next step. Obviously, the Bucks and
the league thought, you know, he could because he was
going to be a first round pick. Benjamin Morrison a
lot like Will Johnson. I mean, the injury was the
main concern which pushed him down, as well as the
fact he didn't play as well in the beginning of
twenty twenty four as he had the previous year. Listen
(24:13):
a year ago. If we were going to preview the
twenty twenty four five draft at the end of twenty
twenty four, Benjamin Johnson, as well as Will Johnson, is
a potential top ten pick. Jacob Parrish had been rising
up draft boards. I had him as a third round
choice smaller guy, but well built and he's explosive. John
talked about David Walker, the Central Arkansas edge rusher who
(24:34):
we saw at the Senior Bowl who could not be stopping.
Speaker 1 (24:37):
He was great there.
Speaker 3 (24:37):
The only reason he didn't go earlier is he's six
to one in change and it doesn't have great growth potential.
Elijah Roberts is sort of the same type of edge rusher.
Not the biggest guy in the wall, but athletic, explosive,
can bend the edge, change direction, and make plays in
backside pursuit. Tedes Johnson, I think Ted Johnson probably has
a chip on his shoulder. He probably felt he should
(24:58):
have gone in the middle rounds. A smaller guy, he
didn't run as fast as every one thought. We all
thought he's gonna be a four to three to five guy.
He runs a five one guy. But you know what,
he's football fast.
Speaker 1 (25:08):
Yeah, you watch him on tape. He runs away from everybody, he.
Speaker 3 (25:10):
Can separate from defenders and basically he's fast when he's
on the football field, which is all that matters.
Speaker 2 (25:16):
All right, let's go to the NFC North here, Tony.
Let's go to the Bears. First eight selections for them
Coaston level and then round one Luther burning A round two.
I don't think you can complain about the value, but
I am surprised they went for two weapons early already
with DJ Moore and Rome with Doonese on the roster,
but heck, they want to get players around Kayleb Williams.
Speaker 1 (25:35):
I get where you're coming from.
Speaker 2 (25:36):
Then they add an offensive lineman out of Boston College,
Ozzie Trappelo, to help protect Kayleb Williams right tackle, not
a left tackle, which is interesting. Schamar Turner, the defensive
tackle of Texas A and M with their second second
round pick. I thought pretty good value there. Rubin Hippolyte
the second out of Maryland, and around number four one
of the surprises of the draft. Zah Frasier, the corner
(25:56):
out of utc UTSA University of Texas, San Antonio. He
was at the Shrine Bowl. We saw him there. He
did pretty good at there. Luke Newman in Michigan State Guard.
I think he was at the Shrine Bowl too, I
remember correctly, and then Kyle Manungai. I had a Rutgers
who look. I just think round seven. He doesn't have
the physical traits, but if you watch him. He can
play running back. He's a good player that the Bears
(26:17):
need a guy to go with DeAndre Swift. So I
think overall, I think the Bears Again, I was surprised
they won two weapons early with their first two picks,
but it's hard to argue.
Speaker 1 (26:25):
With the value.
Speaker 3 (26:26):
Yeah, I'm not and I wrote about this at the combine.
Ben Johnson was going to bring his type of players
in and basically start to build around Caleb Williams to
hopefully get Caleb Williams up to the level they think
he deserves to be. Colston Loveland, No, I'm not surprised
he went before Tyler Warren. I didn't have him going
for Tyler Warren my Mott, But if you read anything
I reported from the combine, teams had him rated higher
(26:47):
than Tyler Warren. I had him ated higher than Tyler Warren,
and teams had Colston Loveland great as a top twelve pick.
As I said time and time, he's more brought hours
than Tyler Warren was, which is what Ben Johnson wanted.
Lup de Burden could be great value at number thirty nine.
A terrific receiver who coming into the season was great.
Is the number one prospect by NFL scouts, not the
(27:10):
number one receiver. The number one prospect needs to expand
his route tree and just improve the details of his game.
Ozzie Trapillo, as you mentioned, I had written before Day
two started that he was rising up draft boards. I
thought round two was a little bit rich, but he's
a versatile guy who will be a terrific swing tackle,
a swing offensive tackle, Shamar Turner. I thought it was
(27:30):
excellent value late in round two. He's explosive, he's athletic.
He's just got to learn to play a little bit bigger.
Ruben Hippolyte was a surprise in round four, five eleven
and a half, two hundred and thirty five pounds. We'ren
a four to four to five on his PROTA, but
he plays like that if you've watched Maryland in the
past three years. He is a explosive sideline to sideline,
one gap defender who was great in pursuit struggles, making
(27:53):
plays in reverse. But they drafted him, I'm sure on
the inside to chase the action and play special teams.
Zoff Frazier, great size, great speed, flashes, ability and each
work on his game. Luke Newman a smaller zone blocking
offensive lineman. Started his career at Holy Cross, where he
played tackle, played guard last year at Michigan State. It's
got to get a little bit stronger. But six round
(28:15):
was good value. And you know you mentioned a Managa,
one of my favorite running backs. Don't be surprised if
he makes the active roster because he's just smart. He's tough,
all right. We interviewed Kyle Managhi. He had cole scholarship
play football at Ivy League schools and he went to Rutgers.
Maybe you can question that decision, but he's a tough
(28:36):
guy and he really carried the load for Rutgers the
past couple of years. He was their offense.
Speaker 2 (28:43):
Let's go to the Lions, Tony, and what I wrote
down is that this tracks for them. This is a
very Lions draft, and that's not a bad thing.
Speaker 1 (28:50):
By the way.
Speaker 2 (28:51):
Tyler Williams at twenty eighth overall, I think both of
us saw him as a movie an early second round guy,
but he's a he's a really good player, safe player,
improve your run defense. Tyler Williams of twenty eight solid
as a rock. Tate Rallige ended the second round. Again,
I saw him as a early third round guard. He's scrappy.
That dude just says. Dan Campbell were in all over him.
It's like if Dan Campbell could build an offensive lineman
(29:11):
in a lab, they would look exactly like Tate Rallige.
So that made sense. They're a pick fifty seven. Isaac Tesla.
I thought it was a little bit early. It picks
seventy in round three, but man, his team's better than
you think it is when you look at the numbers
and he runs really well and he's big. So I
thought that was a good pick. Miles Fraser in round five.
I thought that was good value for the guard out
of LSU. He could work his way into the starting
(29:34):
lineup at some point. Met hassanin again just talked to him.
He just a Dan Campbell personality. I think it fits well.
Dan Jackson another type of Dan Campbell personality out of Georgia.
And then finally dom Dominic love at his teammate in Georgia,
the wide receiver. So this just felling. It's such a
Lion's draft. They just want to add to that character
(29:54):
and personality they have on that team.
Speaker 3 (29:55):
Williams was a guy that I had going in my
first round box right around com by time, and if
you watch this show during the college football playoffs, I
had said that I thought he helped himself more than
any other player in the college football players because while
Jack Sawyer was making the splash plays and getting a
lot of the you know the headlines, it was Tyleek
Williams who was occupying double gaps, who was taking on
(30:17):
double team blocks, which freed up a lot of things
for both Sayer and JT. Twoo. Maloa athletic, explosive and
he's also shown an improved game the past two seasons.
You got to like that Rat Legit and Miles Frasier
are both the same type of offensive lineman. Like you said,
Dan Campbell, punching the mouth type of blockers. That's what
they take. Took him Tesla. I would agree. Tesla had
(30:40):
a fourth fifth round choice. Obviously they like him in
the third round. He's big, he's athletic. The production isn't there,
but he didn't get a lot of opportunities. I guess
the Lions think we'll just throw him the ball. He
went out for the contested pass, but he can also
run past opponents.
Speaker 1 (30:55):
Markinso's quarterback situation wasn't the best of this year.
Speaker 3 (30:57):
Yah Ahmad Hasanian, As you mentioned, good in that four
man line, great story, Incredibly athletic Dan Jackson, very workmanlike,
who I think ran fashion than people thought during his
pro day, Dominic love it. I mean, he's got decent speed.
Those Georgia receivers had problems holding on to the football
last season, so he's got to be able to do
(31:20):
that in camp or he'll be looking for another job.
Speaker 2 (31:24):
All right, let's go to the Green Bay Pack. Heres here, Tony.
They start off with three offensive players and they picked
three defensive players before wrapping.
Speaker 1 (31:31):
Things up with a corner and a guard.
Speaker 2 (31:32):
Matthew Golden. Very excited to announce their first wide receiver
in the first round. Well, two thousand was free. They
did that two two thousand and two. Walker, right, Jamon
Walker was the pick in two thousand and two.
Speaker 1 (31:43):
Right.
Speaker 2 (31:43):
Then they picked Anthony Belton in round two out of
NC State. I like Belton. I thought that was a
little bit early for him in round two, but I
think he g has a chance to be a good player.
Then saveon Williams, who he's listed a wide receiver, but
he's gonna be used I bet as a running back
and a bunch of different ways as a weapon, but
the Packers just continue to load up that wide receiver room.
(32:03):
Then you had Baron Soerell out of Texas the defensive
end in round four, Colin Oliver, Oklahoma State defensive end
in round five. Another trench guy defensive tackle, Warren Brinton,
a guy we both like. In round six. I thought
that was good value. Michael Robinson round seven, John Williams
round seven. A corner and a guard.
Speaker 3 (32:19):
I mean, Golden is the guy. I'm sure they were
surprised he dropped to him. I mean they needed speed
at receiver. He's the speed receiver, so they added a receiver.
I knew they were going to add a couple of receivers.
With Golden, they got the speed that they needed. Belton,
like you, I was surprised. I mean Belton. I mean
it's hit or miss with Anthony Belton. Scouts at one
point in time had him as a potential first round pick.
(32:41):
He's big, he's athletic, but he's inconsistent. He blocks with
terrific fundamentals, but he doesn't finish blocks. So second round
was a little bit early. It's interesting you talk about
savvy On Williams potentially playing running back because that's what
I reported before the draft.
Speaker 2 (32:55):
I should mention, by the way, Christian Watson is out
for the year. He's their speed wide out, which is
why Gold was even more important for them. Part of me,
I'm sorry, that's right.
Speaker 3 (33:03):
A bigger contested catch guy who like the last bigger
contested catch guy that came out of TCU, struggles catching
the ball times, but you know, I like his game.
Sorell was a good edge rusher. Colin Oliver's more. They
have most at a defensive end. I don't know if
they can use them as a linebacker. Struggled last year
with injury to Oklahoma State Warren Brinson, as you mentioned,
(33:24):
a player we both like, was terrific to shrine ball
good at the Combine, had a great Pro day. Michael
Robinson is an athlete more than he is a football player.
But he's a developmental prospect. John Williams played left guard
at the Cincinnati Projects to left tackle at Cincinnati Projects
to guard a solid small area blocker.
Speaker 2 (33:43):
All right, let's go to the final NFC norteen. They'll
get to the NFC East Minnesota Vikings, Tony they only
had five picks in the Jefs surprisingly never did actually
trade down to pick up more selections.
Speaker 1 (33:53):
We thought they were a prime team to do that,
and I'm sure they had the opportunity.
Speaker 2 (33:56):
The Giants traded up to twenty five to get Jackson
Dart to pick after the Vikings. So I'm sure the
Giants called the Vikings and offered them the same deal, right,
and the Vikings decide not to do it. They say,
Donovan Jackson the twenty fourth overall, good pick your guy,
ty Felton a round three, the wide receiver out of Maryland,
Tyry and Ingram Dawkins kind of like that end tackle
(34:18):
Tweeter flex guy in round five. Kobe King, a brother
of Caleb King in round six, the linebacker at Penn State,
and then Gavin Bartholomew, the big tight end that at Pittsburgh,
also in round sex.
Speaker 3 (34:29):
It's also interesting you mentioned potentially trading with the Giants
because of my final mock. I had Donovan Jackson going
to the second round to the Giants, and they took
him in the first round. You know, a guy who
did a great job coming back for a senior year
after a very uninspired twenty twenty three campaign. He's a
good zone blocking lineman who just needs to get a
(34:50):
little bit stronger. Tye Felton one of my favorites. Good size,
good downs, reeled speed, consistent catching the ball. You mentioned
Ingram Dawkins. Solid athlete. I mean, is shown the ability
to rush the passer. We saw him at the Senior Bowl.
He could also rush the passer from end or inside
at the tackle. Kobe King Moore of a run defender.
Gavin Bartholomew. You know, he looks the part, but he
(35:13):
doesn't always play it. I don't know whether it's because
of the system with a quarterback play at Pittsburgh which
was uninspired last season, but he's got some upside. I
am surprised they never addressed the cornerback position at any
point with their selections.
Speaker 2 (35:26):
Okay, now let's go to the NFC East, Tony. Let's
start with the Dallas Cowboys. I'm just going on the
order of my list here, folks. They we mentioned Tyler
Broke a couple of times already. He was their pick
at twelve. Donovan Azaraku, as Tony has teased me many times,
you know, I like that pick at forty four. I
thought he could be a first round they' dropped into
the second. Savanna Ravel, who both of us are a
big fan of. We thought he would be an early
(35:47):
second round pick, and if he did not get hurt
this year, he could have been a top fifteen pick.
In this year's draft, he goes at seventy six, no
fourth round pick for the Cowboys. In the fifth round,
they select Jayden Blue, running back out of Texas. Kind
of a big play running back. I think that's good value.
And then a bunch of guys that fill out the
trenches on both ends along with one more running back
also kind of he looks like a trench play every
(36:08):
though he plays running back. Schamar James, the linebacker out
of Florida. In round five, Johnny Cornelius, tackle out of Oregon,
and then three seventh rounders, Jay Toua, a defensive tackle
out of UCLA, Phil Maffa, the big, bruising running back
out of Clemson, and then Tommy Akin bisati Agen Bissetti
out of Maryland the defensive tackle.
Speaker 3 (36:28):
And the interesting year is, I think here is no receivers,
and you know I reported and it was picked up
that they were gonna look receiver. In fact, there was
a report that they were trying early on that they
were from ESPN, that they were trying to get into
the top ten to take a receiver. Never came their fruition.
Tyler Booker outstanding a blocker fits the Cowboys system, twelves
(36:48):
a little bit rich for my as far as my
board was concerned, but still a real good player. Ez
A Roku. I think the interesting thing with him is
are they gonna have him standover tackle? Are they gonna
have him come out of a three point stay? Are
they're going to use him at both? But a guy
who can rush the passer and a smart, tough player
Shannon Revel Shavon Revel. If they get him back to
where he was before the injury, they hit a home
(37:10):
run with this pick. Jaydon Blue needs work on his
running back and his ball carrying skills. Chamar James is
a slower one gap for seat one gap of linebacker.
Cornelius is gonna be a good swing lineman. I think
he started his career college career at Rhode Island, played
right tackle at Oregon. I think he's more of a guard,
but still an inexpensive backup. Jay Toya is a big
(37:32):
bodied interior defensive tackle who has to learn to play
big football. Phil MafA is your short yardage ball carrier.
And then Tommy I'm not even gonna try and say
his le game has shown as athleticism has shown some flashes,
but just needs to develop his game. I think the
interesting thing here is I was told and I reported
(37:52):
that the Cowboys could look defensive line with their first
round pick. They didn't do it, but they did take
three defensive linemen throughout their nine picks.
Speaker 2 (38:01):
Yeah, and as Araku, and then the Jerry Jones said,
or Stephen Jones, I think, get which one of one
of the Joneses said after the first round that they
had a player with a first round grade still left
on their board. It could have been Azraku for all
we know. So they end up getting one of those
guys in round number two, and you know, they kind
of teas the fact that they had trades lined up
and stuff like that. So we'll see if they make
a trade for a veteran wide receiver now, which sometimes
(38:23):
do pop loose after the draft. This team's draft a
bunch of wide receivers, so I'll see if that comes
to thru ushit at all all right, let's go to
the New York Football Giants. Tony Abdul quarter third overall.
They trade up trading pick ninety nine this year in
a third round pick next year to the Houston Texans
to select Ole Miss quarterback Jackson Dart at twenty five.
Darius Alexander at sixty five, a third round pick out
(38:43):
of Toledo. I thought that was a nice pick. I
had a second round great on him. Cam Skataboo top
of the fourth round, pick one to OZH five, Marcus
bow the versatile offensive lineman. Giants will try and tackle
first at pick one fifty four and round five, and
then to sevenths Thomas Faedoni at a Nebraska who's a guy.
Speaker 1 (39:03):
That can move.
Speaker 2 (39:03):
He's a good athlete, also showed he could block it
in Nebraska. And then Corey Black, the cornerback out of Oklahoma.
Speaker 3 (39:08):
State Abdul Carter. We've beaten this to death. They got
the best player in the draft with the twenty fifth selection,
Jackson Dart. I'm not a big fan of trading back
in for quarterbacks because I think they're always overdrafted. But
the Giants basically gave away nothing for this. They gave
away a third round pick this year, which was a
compensatory pick found money ninety nine selection is more like
a fourth round choice. I think they did a good
(39:28):
job there. Darius Alexander's John mentioned very athletic. He's got
good size. He just needs to learn to play his
size at some power to his game. Cam Scataboo, I
think is gonna be a legend with giant fans. You're
gonna hear a lot of ooz and os as he
drives through defenders rather than trying to run around him.
He's a great compliment to Tyrone, Tracy, Marcus Bow. You
(39:49):
know you said he's gonna they're gonna try and tackle.
Very athletic, has an upside, little light in the on
the bottom. Needs to add some power to his game,
but has an upside a. I think he's got a
great future. Thomas Faedoni was kind of pushed out it
in Nebraska because that offense didn't fit his system. The
coaches told transfer enter the draft. He decided to enter
(40:09):
the draft. He's gonna be, I believe, a very good
number two tight end. He can block, he can catch
the ball. He's more is an intermediate type of pass catcher.
Corey Black maybe a bit of a surprise, but a size,
speed guy who consistently showed improvement in his game and
played his best football as a senior. That's what you
want out of a cornerback entering the draft.
Speaker 2 (40:30):
All right, Now, let's get to the Philadelphia Eagles Tony
who just continue. The reason good teams are good is
because they draft all right, and the Eagles I think
had another really nice draft.
Speaker 1 (40:39):
Ifough, the Giants had a nice draft too.
Speaker 2 (40:41):
Johy Campbell get to thirty one because of the injury
stuff we talked about leading up to the process. Andrew
mccoubi at sixty four, it's a little high for me
for him, but he's a really fun football player to watch.
They need to replace Chauncey Gardner Johnson. I think he
does fit into that type of category with the way
he plays, so I think that's a good fit there.
Ty Robinson a round four I think that was good value.
Three technique, five technique upfield type of guy. Then in
(41:05):
the fifth round, Mac McWilliams, Smelmandon mclewilliams cournerback of UCF
linebackert Georgia Manden Jr.
Speaker 1 (41:12):
And then Drew Kendall, who again is an.
Speaker 2 (41:14):
Athletic moving center, great backup for camp Jurgens at that position.
And then in the sixth round Kyle mccorr development a quarterback,
Miles Hinton at tackle, a lot of Michigan on the
offensive tackle, Cameron Williams offensive tackle, lot of Texas. He
again you get him with with with Jeff Statlin down there.
He's got a lot of talent if you.
Speaker 1 (41:31):
Could develop into something.
Speaker 2 (41:32):
And then Antonine Powell Island who's a speed rusher coming
off the edge that'll kind of go into that Eagles
rotation at edge rusher.
Speaker 3 (41:39):
Yeah, the rich get richer. I mean, I look at
all these selections and I said the biggest problem with
this draft is there's not going to be enough room
on this roster because the Eagles have only a certain
amount of spots they're looking to fill. And I think
that these guys will make a roster in some of
another team in some form or another. Johan Campbell I
had reported that shoulder issues was pushing him down draft boards.
Could be it could have fall out of the first round.
(42:01):
Howie Roseman trades up gets him. Now he has them
for five years. There's some concern Johad Campbell may miss
a portion, if not his entire rookie season because of
the issues. But Howie Roseman, you saw what Landon Dickerson.
You know, is willing to roll the dice on these guys,
and it really usually comes up, you know, double six
of snake eyes. I don't know. I'm not a gambler
whatever they call it. Andrew mccooba, I thought is a
(42:23):
really good player. I had him as a third rounder.
He goes late second pick, late second round, sidelight to
sideline safety with good ball skills. Ty Robinson one of
my favorite players throughout this entire process the past two years.
Line him up on the inside, line him up on
the outside. He can play three downs, rush the passer, smart, tough,
He's got some growth potential. Mac Williams a bigger corner
(42:46):
who showed a developing game last year. Smell Mondon smaller linebacker,
but very good in all aspects of the game. Drew Kendall,
you mentioned his athleticism, you mentioned his football intelligence. You
didn't mention his bloodlines. The son of he Kendled. I
think he's got an outstanding future. Colin McCord definite a
developmental quarterback. I think they were looking for shador standers.
(43:08):
Colin McCord's got better physical trades. He was the best
deep thrower at the Combine. He's just going to learn
to move his head a little bit quicker and stop
staring down the primary target. Miles Hinton. Another guy with
good blood lines. Athletic tackle Cameron Williams. Like you said,
you get him in the sixth round. I don't know
if they're going to try and put him in in
your reserve this year or what if you get Cameron
Williams to play consistently the way he played the first
(43:29):
four or five games this year. You hit a home
run in Antoine Powell Ryland, the type of pass rusher
that the Eagles have success with, Small but quick, explosive
and can bend the edge in Recavoc no question.
Speaker 2 (43:43):
All right, let's go to the Washington command this year.
Tony just five picks, the Marshawn Lannimore trade last year,
the Deebo Samuel trade last year, no third round pick,
no fifth round pick, Josh Connelly, and of round one
offensive tackle. We'll see where he fits in there with
Larry Tunzel is their left tackle. Trey Amos and the
round two cornerback out of All miss They needed help
with that position after letting go of Emmanuel Forbes, was
(44:04):
their first round pick two years ago at that spot.
Good value there. They wanted to add some helping wide
receiver for their quarterback. Jalen Lane out of Virginia Tech
in round four, and then round six Kane Madrono, the
linebacker the UCLA. And then in round seven I think
a sleeper pick here Jacory Krosky Merrit who was.
Speaker 1 (44:21):
Great at the Shrine Ball when we were there. Fast,
speedy guy.
Speaker 2 (44:24):
You know, Austin Eckler stolen their contract, but he's getting
on the wrong side of thirty.
Speaker 1 (44:28):
I that could be a nice replacement for Eckler. As
we moved down the road.
Speaker 3 (44:33):
Here, surprised they didn't take an edge rusher, which was
an area that I know coming in a draft, they
wanted to address. Connolly, one of my favorite offensive linemen.
Multi purpose, can play guard, can play tackle. Like you said,
it'll be interesting to see where they line him up.
I had him as my number one blocker. The fact is,
you got Jayden Daniels there, you better be able to
protect him. Trey Amos fell because of injury concerns. There
were a lot of injury red flags leading up to
(44:54):
the draft, which is why he fell the way he did.
But a developing cornerback whose game really took off lat
this year at the Old Miss Jalen Lane, a speed receiver,
a ky madronal smart, incredibly athletic, tough. I got to
speak with him, actually, he came up and spoke to
me at the Shrine Bowl. Was incredibly impressed with him.
(45:15):
More of a nickel linebacker, a special teams guy. Jacory
Krusky Merritt, as you mentioned about him. I think he
transfer from Alabama State, was injured last year, only played
a couple of the games at Arizona State, didn't get
a large workload, but had some physical skills and has
some upside.
Speaker 2 (45:33):
All right, Tony, that's the NFC. Any closing thoughts before
we wrap this sucker up? No, I mean really, no
bad drafts. I think a lot of these teams helped themselves.
I think in the case of the Eagles, that's why
they were always competitive.
Speaker 3 (45:47):
You saw what Harry Roseman did. I think the Bears
really helped themselves and will make themselves contenders in the
NFC North, which is going to be one of the
toughest divisions, not the toughest division in that conference.
