Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is Drivetime with Travis Wingfield. What is up Dolphins
and welcome to the Draft Time Podcast. I am your host,
Travis Wingfield. It on today's show, we are celebrating the
sixtieth anniversary of the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. Now we're
gonna do it today as well by hearing some of
the alumni that will be out there for the game
(00:22):
on Sunday. OJ McDuffie, my guy, Juice, Richmond Webb, and
John Offerdahl all join me plus the week sixteen picks
across the National Football League from the Baptist Hill Studios
inside the Baptist Hell Training Complex. This is the Draft
Time Podcast. Manie Daffee Sirs. Joining us today here on
the Drift Time Podcast is We try not to play favorites,
(00:43):
but I'm gonna do it anyway. Here my favorite of
the entire Dolphins alumni, good friend of mine, friend of
the podcast, coworker for a long time, OJ McDuffie, Juice,
how we doing, Mobe, Welcome back in the Drive Time man.
Speaker 2 (00:54):
Man oh man, it's been too long. Man.
Speaker 3 (00:56):
You know it's amazing that as many times as I've
driven beside you, you know, I don't get on the
drive time a lot.
Speaker 4 (01:03):
Man, that's a mess, Travis. We've got to work on that, bro.
I agree wholeheartedly. I feel like it's been a long
time since you and I have done something like this.
It's usually, you know, the big dog with us, big
seth and then the fifth tank is cruise along right now.
I enjoy your guys' content jump on from time to time,
and you know, I'm sure you guys are diving into
this this week as well as the Miami Dolphins are
sixtieth anniversary of the organization right back in nineteen sixty six,
(01:26):
kicking off with the Joe Hour touchdown run back in
the opening game. I want to just first start with
this with you, Jews, because we're celebrating the alumni this weekend.
Just tell us about how great this alumni is because
you're a huge part of it. You know, I rub
elbows with not more all the time. And he's got
this this rollodex of list of guys that can come
on the show and help us out and just so
many guys connected. How special is this alumni to you?
Speaker 3 (01:49):
Honestly, Travis, there's no better alumni association when it comes
to and then we're not necessary association, but alumni group
when it comes to NFL or other sports than the
Miami Dolphins. Honestly, there's probably you know, I don't know
how many one hundred plus guys that actually live down
here still always continuously in the community, always doing things.
(02:10):
When the current players can't do it, the alumni guys
they step up. And then we've got the best owner
of mister Ross who provides a suite for us every
single game that holds about sixty to seventy people for
every home game. You know, it's sweet that they could
sell easily and make a lot of money off of
but they still give it to us alumni. And you
missed mentioned mister nat Moore. I mean that more is
(02:32):
the glue. You know, he's the catalyst for what we
are able to accomplish as an alumni. And Erica Erica
has you know his I know their co equals to
me because both of them are just super amazing people
that make sure that we stay in line as a group,
because we got a bunch of alpha males that might
want to act up on occasion, but Erica is just amazing.
(02:55):
So the fact that we're offered so much down here
in South Florida, Florida community. It's just a it's amazing, man.
And for me, the pride of being a Miami Dolphin.
The only team that I cheered for, other than the
Browns the Cowboys at times, has been the Miami Dolphins,
just that day in nineteen ninety three when they drafting Man.
Speaker 2 (03:15):
So it's like, you know, this is my team.
Speaker 3 (03:17):
But the fact that we all get to get together
and hang out, I mean, guys come from around the country,
some might come from somewhere else in the world to
be a part of the Alumni WEEKND.
Speaker 2 (03:27):
It's amazing. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (03:29):
I love how the organization leans into it too, with
you doing the pregame hype a couple of weeks ago,
right that was before the Saints game. Yes, not mistaken,
you doing that, the pregame coin toss. We get alumni
out there all the time. They do a great job
of celebrating the rich tradition of the Miami Dolphins here
and you know, you're obviously a big part of that.
And I love that you mentioned that you because it
still kind of blows my mind, Juice that you went
(03:50):
season tickets after your playing career. I feel like there's
probably not many dudes that went that route. And so
you know, I'm sitting here thinking about you know, I'm
were watching or listening on radio to the ninety four
playoff loss against the Chargers, the story on miss right.
That was my first Dolphins memory that I can I
can like recall where I was and that happened. There
was a couple of more in the late nineties, like
(04:11):
Brino had a five pit game on Thanksgiving for some reason.
That one stands out, I think is at my grandparents' house,
and like saw for some reason, the ninety nine wild
Card game in Seattle. But the one that really really
sticks out as a formative like first memory for me, Juice,
was your one handed catch before the Jed Weaver touchdown
to tie the game in the Lamar Smith overtime winner.
And so I bring it up because that was my
(04:32):
favorite or maybe my first memory is a Dolphins fan.
But I also have a favorite that I'll wait until later.
But I'm curious if you have your favorite moment as
a player, but if you also might have one as
a fan post playing career.
Speaker 3 (04:44):
Yeah, you know what's so crazy about that Travis that
that catch against the Coast was. You know, I can
only cut off my right foot. My left foot was
a mess at that point. So they made sure I
was on the left side, made me run out to
the left, you know. I mean Jay Fie threw a
perfect ball man just making that grab man, and that's
all I had left at that point with my hands.
And so it worked out in that situation.
Speaker 1 (05:04):
Man.
Speaker 3 (05:04):
But you know, there are so many amazing moments that
I had playing for the Dolphins. You know, first of all,
I talked about Draft Day. That's that's what that's probably
the most amazing. But then you get to see all
these milestones. Shuler winning, you know, it's you know, it's
record breaking win in Philadelphia with Doug Peterson as the
head coach. And then there's Danny had a milestone seemed
(05:24):
like every other week. And to be a part of
you know, him going over four hundred touchdown passes is
probably one of my most epic memories of being a
Miami Dolphin. He goes into the game in three ninety eight,
I catch three ninety nine and then they pulled Lamar
Thomas out of the game and put me in because
they knew that it was a quick out for it
could be a touchdown for so I could get four hundred.
(05:46):
You know, not necessarily that they didn't want Lamar to
get it, but they we've been together so long that
they wanted me to be a part of that history.
And shure as hell, I got the four hundred. And
then I caught four to one on that same game
against the Saints, who I just did the chant for.
So you know, that's that's one of the greatest moments ever.
Speaker 2 (06:02):
Man.
Speaker 3 (06:02):
And then as a fan, Travis, there were so many
different times I've been I love this team, Man, I'm
getting a little passionate about my squad. Is that, you know,
just just being able to, like you talk about, get
season tickets and watch the team play was great. But
then when you get a chance to watch certain things,
like you see certain players come along that you've become
(06:23):
fans of. But man, I was probably one of a
thousand people that didn't leave, you know, for you know,
the Miami miracle. You know, as a fan, come on, man,
First of all, I don't leave any game early for
the Miami Dolphins. But to be a part of that
and to beat the New England Patriots, who were such
a dynasty, and you know, and being in the stands
(06:44):
for that was just so much fun. And what it
did to New England knocking them out of the position
they were in the playoffs and had to go on road,
something they hadn't done in a long time. That was
that was probably one of my most you know, one
of the funniest moments I had as a fan.
Speaker 1 (06:57):
It's a tough one to be. I was in intention
for that too in the press box. It is actually
one of the first games I covered as a credential
media member, and it's like, I almost say, like a
kind of kicksart of my career in this whole thing.
So I'm with you on that. I also was going
to bring up to you, I will never forget Juice
driving from the radio station, the old WQAM stations in
North Miami, back to the facility to do the postgame
(07:17):
podcast after you and me and Seth had just done
the postgame podcast, but twenty two Ravens come back and
we were like, we were just I felt like I
was on like the drug of life. I was so
excited about what they had just done, like the future
of a young quarterback and you know, they went to
be Buffalo the next game as well, so that one's
right up against it. But because I was in attends
for the miracle, I think I think being there is better.
(07:38):
Right when you're in person for the game.
Speaker 2 (07:40):
Well you know what happens.
Speaker 3 (07:41):
We always feel like our post game show is so
much better, you know, when you're actually in person, cause
you see other things that you don't see that the
TV copics not giving us, you know, and so yeah,
being a part of that and being a part of
hysteria is like, it's amazing. And this team, this organization
has had so many amazing moments, man, and just to
be a part of it for the lass, Hell, what
am I ninety three?
Speaker 2 (08:02):
I got drafted?
Speaker 3 (08:03):
That's if you do the math and carry the one
travels like thirty two years to me. Man, you know,
it's bit's been out. That's that's probably when you were born.
I started being a you know, one of these guys.
So yeah, so it's been pretty incredible.
Speaker 1 (08:14):
Not not too long before that, not too long before
I'll give you this one.
Speaker 5 (08:18):
I won't.
Speaker 1 (08:18):
I won't. You know, you go the agra. I'm not
going to bring up the former first round draft pick
thing the way the way Seth does I'll go ahead
and give you a break here on your draft time reappearance.
I got two more for you here, big dog number one,
Like again, going back to what you know, being the
the guy in the stands after your playing career ends.
What was it about the Miami Dolphins? And I know
you've mentioned you like the South Florida weather here. You know,
(08:40):
you built a you know, entire life for yourself done here.
But what was it about the Miami Dolphins that made
you a life for Because it's not just you know,
you came down here and retired on you know, your
your nice house on the nice weather. You committed yourself
for the organization by being around them all the time,
by doing jobs, doing radio. We're gonna be doing radio tonight,
Juice and I recordings on a Monday here doing the
pregame show ahead of two those game. What was it
(09:00):
about the Miami Dolphins that made you a lifer man?
Speaker 2 (09:03):
You know what?
Speaker 3 (09:03):
Just everything about them? You know, you come to an
organization that's the winning this organization, it's pro sports, not
just football, you know.
Speaker 2 (09:10):
And then the way they carried themselves.
Speaker 3 (09:11):
When you come into a situation where you've got the
Robbie family as your owners. You got Don Stuel as
your head coach, and then you move on to the Heisingas,
and now we're on to the Rosses. You know, I
mean everything about its class man. There's nothing about this
organization that that lacks.
Speaker 2 (09:28):
They don't lack anything.
Speaker 3 (09:29):
And the fact that they look out for us so much,
they treat us so well, Uh, there's nothing. And then
of course playing my whole career, you know that that
helps a lot when it comes to you know, you know,
being loyal and just being a fan of the team,
because a lot of guys don't get an opportunity to
play for one organization, you know. And I was blessed
to be able to do that with the Miami Dolphins.
(09:50):
And ever since I've been here, they've treated me so well.
The fans have treated me so well. You guys over
in the building have treated me so well. So I
mean that it's it goes without saying that every Sunday,
no matter if it's football season or not, you're gonna
find me in Auckland Orange.
Speaker 1 (10:06):
I love it, man, It's it's my favorite thing to watch.
Like in terms of you know, the team that drafted you,
they got you for life. Man, that's how it should be,
and it's great to see and man, being a one
team your entire career. I don't know if we're ever
gonna see that, Like, you know, the way I was
just looking at the who is the Nebraska quarterback? He
just transferred to his sixth school, seventh school or six
school and seven years? I'm like, I don't know if
we're going to get the Olja mcduffi's and Edgar Martinez anymore. Man,
(10:28):
it seems to be pretty rare of these days.
Speaker 3 (10:29):
They have that much eligibility left. Mark, I know COVID happened,
but damn right, that's exactly what we're uplicats here.
Speaker 1 (10:34):
Freshman year in COVID, it becomes an eight year college career,
fan Wilder style. Last one for you here, Juice. An
impressive guest list for the game on Sunday. There's gonna
be all kinds of alumni here. What are you most
looking forward to about coming out and seeing a bunch
of guys. I'm sure you haven't seen it in a while.
Speaker 3 (10:48):
Yeah, you know what, we do this every year, man,
But you're right though, every every year it takes you know,
those those those times that we miss seeing each other.
And that's what it's all about a lot of times
for us, is that we got that same locker locker room,
that vibe, that camaraderie that we've always had.
Speaker 2 (11:03):
Man.
Speaker 3 (11:04):
And so I love the fact that I get to
hang out with all the wide receivers from all these
different Generationsravis is crazy now. Most of them I didn't
play with, but then somebody did play with him some
after I played. So when all these guys get together, man,
we all have great stories. And I love hearing the
older guys. You know, and I'm an older guy, but
there's some older older guys out there that sit there
and they, you know, tell these stories and I've heard
(11:25):
them a million times, but I still enjoy them just
as much.
Speaker 2 (11:27):
Bro.
Speaker 3 (11:28):
So it's just great to be able to get together
with the guys that we consider the best athletes on
the football field.
Speaker 2 (11:34):
That's the wide outs.
Speaker 1 (11:36):
If you could have a love of them, you would
take a love of them.
Speaker 3 (11:38):
Eleven eleven. We ain't blocking nobody. We're gonna be wide open,
though it's.
Speaker 1 (11:45):
Gonna be the Miyam miracle, play every single play, just
run around. We'll play some sad love football the way
it used.
Speaker 2 (11:49):
To be about ten and we'll take Marino with us.
Speaker 1 (11:52):
That's hey, you're not in the Hey, Phil River is
just I think Dan's got a couple more throws back
in he is Oja McDuffie Dolphin's legend of Fish Tank pod. Yeah,
so je's what's come up on the fish Tank here
coming the next couple of weeks.
Speaker 2 (12:03):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (12:03):
Man, So we got a piece for doing with Johnny
Alfred All that's going to be really good. But well,
you know, we just dropped Robert Wilson. Man a great
story man. So it's so crazy for me is that
some of the best stories, as you know, Travis, are
the ones that people don't really know a lot about.
But this guy played fullback play for Cowboys, play for us,
and those guys get so little recognition, but what they
do behind the scenes is absolutely amazing.
Speaker 6 (12:25):
Man.
Speaker 3 (12:25):
So Seth and I we dove deep into what he
was talking about and what he's went up to, man,
and it was a great podcast.
Speaker 1 (12:31):
That's what the Fish Tank does the very best. I
always tell you, guys, those deep dives and those stories
are always my favorite part of the entire show. Juice
will see you here in about three hours. Man, thanks
for your time today.
Speaker 2 (12:39):
Yeah, thanks Travis.
Speaker 1 (12:40):
I love that man. I love that man. I'm not
ashamed to admit it. I love that man. You know,
it was fun talking about that game back in two thousand,
because it's like Quinn you Weers on Wednesday said, like
if I talked to my ten or twelve year old
self about, hey, you're going to be starting the NFL
on this date, Like if you told Travis that he
was going to be like going to OJ's house for
thingskiving when I was twelve years old, Like, you know,
(13:02):
probably a pinch me type of moment. So appreciate Juice
is time. Let's go ahead and pause for our first break.
We'll come back and do a bit of a detour
on this special episode and pick the Week sixteen games.
Then we'll hear from Richmond Webb and John Offerdahl all
of that Next Draft Time podcast brought to you by
AutoNation in eleven and five. Week fifteen brings the season
(13:24):
record to one forty seven sixty two and one. That
damn tie Man get rid of ties somehow because they
ruined the pick segment. We had no ties in the
NFL for the last two seasons. We had two ties
back in twenty two and a tie back in twenty one.
It used to be a common thing. Now we don't
have any ties for a couple of years, and then
the Packers and Cowboys tie way back in like what
(13:45):
was that Week four? Week five? Anyway, let's do some
live math here on the show. One forty seven plus
six two equals two toh nine, So one forty seven
divided by two oh nine seventy point three percent. I
don't think we're going to get there this year. We're
gonna keep trying. We have to win a whole bunch
more games. Agaet this having two percent? Did we win
on Thursday night? Took the Rams over the Seahawks and
(14:06):
what has been billed as the game of the year.
Quite frankly, here at eleven am on Thursday, I am
very excited to watch that game. I do think the
Rams rolled in it. I picked it on the Thursday podcast,
But who knows. I could have a big shake up
in the NFC if the Seahawks are able to pull
off a victory there On Saturday. Two games Philly over
Washington is my first pick. I think the Eagles are
(14:28):
gonna benefit from a soft landing here down the stretch.
They pretty much already put the clamps on the NFC
East given the Cowboys struggles losing to nine on Sunday Night,
So kind of a tune up a couple of weeks here,
a preseason for the Eagles ahead of their inevitable home
wildcard playoff matchup. That passing game has to get a
lot better, good chance to get it right against the Commanders,
who have struggled against the pass all year long. I'll
(14:50):
take the Packers over the Bears. What a treat man
this weekend? Huh? What a tree on Saturday night? Packers
and Bears in primetime at night? Is it going to
be snowy? I know it would be cold out there
in Chicago, So looking forward to watching that one. Taking
the Packers though, even without mackel Parson. I just think
that they're a much better football team than the Chicago Bears. Now,
(15:11):
I will say the Bears. Travis pretty wrong on the Bears.
That run game is awesome, Ben Johnson, the offensive line,
all those things worked, and I didn't like the way
they handled those practices back in August. But maybe in hindsight,
maybe maybe there was something to that, you know, And
I think Caleb Williams, I think I'm kind of turning
the knob on my belief in him as well. I'm
(15:33):
not saying I think he's gonna be an elite quarterback
the way some folks pegged him as, but I do
see that he has gotten a lot better in the
way he reads out defenses and progressions. So he has
a chance against a Packers' defense that everyone's gonna expect.
It's gonna be reeling out for the part mackel Parsons lost,
But I do think that the Packers will have enough
offensively to get over the Bears in this one, sweep
them and take a stranglehold on the NFC North. I'm
(15:56):
taking the Bengals over the Dolphins. You know about that already.
I'll take the Bills over the Browns. Josh Allen, I
hate to admit this, I think he's about to go
on a run here, and I think the Bills. This
is the best year for the Bills to make a
run through the AFC, and I don't think it's even
close to the best team they've had since Josh Allen
(16:17):
and Sean McDermott have been there. But it is the
weakest the rest of the AFC has been. If you
get Buffalo and Denver in the playoffs, I would pick
Buffalo in a landslide in that game. The same with
the Patriots. Not a landslide for the Patriots. But I
just trust Buffalo far more than anybody else in the
AFC once we get to January, and it's because sevent
team's gonna put that team on his back once again.
(16:38):
They can't stop the run. The defense is a mess.
But I just think Josh Allen can score whenever he
has to. I think he'll do.
Speaker 5 (16:43):
It this year.
Speaker 1 (16:44):
So it's going to be at Cleveland on Sunday and
get that train rolling. I got the Cowboys over the Chargers.
I would bet if you had to go back and
look at every single team at my record predicting these
teams this year. I probably have my worst record picking
Chargers games, which is, hey, dummy, why don't you learn something?
But then that watch that Chiefs game and it's like
Mahomes is throwing picks into the end zone. Wh they're
down by three and they get into field goal range
(17:05):
and Gardner Minshew throws a pick when they could have
tied the game. Like they just find these crazy ways
to win football games, and maybe maybe that's what they do.
It is what they do. Shoot Dan Hanss on the
Heat The Call podcast had a great reference saying, some
great rider talked about how don't wrestle with the pig.
Number one they like it, and number two you're not
(17:27):
gonna win. I just push here, But basically, if you
get into a sixteen thirteen game against the Chargers, they're
gonna win. They like get messy, they like being in
the mud. But the Cowboys offense, I think, after a
rough game on Sunday and kind of playing loose in
this one, after the Chargers just had their biggest win
of the year, essentially punched our ticket to the playoffs.
Gave me the Cowboys over the Chargers in that one,
(17:47):
Titans over Chiefs. What a two win team gonna beat
the defending world champions. Well it's Gardner Minshew, go Koogs.
But he does not have it anymore. Well, oh my god,
I'm gonna keep it in. I'm keeping it in. I
don't care. That was an act, a completely involuntary sound
(18:08):
you just heard come out of my orifice, And we're
gonna keep it in. We're gonna keep it in. I
think I told you guys, I had the stomach flew
this weekend. I'm still not feeling very good, a little
bit loopy. So there you go. That's kind of deep. Bro.
No one's gonna care about the rest of these picks
now that we have that, we're keeping it in. I'll
take these Saints over the Jets. I talked about on
(18:29):
the freaking was it the preview podcast? I forget how
would the Dolphins be able to climb into the top
ten of the draft. And one of the ways to
do it was to lose out. But also the Saints
might have a chance to win out. They played the Jets,
the Titans, and the Falcons. They could win out. They
could go seven to ten. They're gonna beat the Jets
on Sunday. I have the Vikings over the Giants. I'm
done picking the Giants. They've been a train wreck all year.
(18:52):
And Jackson Dart went back into the Blue tent again
for his sixth time for a concussion evaluation. That's not great.
I'll take the Bucks over the Panthers and the epic
battle for the NFC South seven and seven. The Bucks,
I remember like three years ago when I had that,
I would talk to you guys in the podcast all
the time about how, like man they could imagine being
one of these eight to seven teams trying to crack
the playoffs when you know you just are gonna be
Lambs the Slaughter in the wild card round and if
(19:14):
you win that game, certainly in the divisional round. Like now,
I'm like, I don't want to be eight inside them again.
But the Bucks like got out of that, and now
they've reverted right back into that and they're competing with
the dregs like the Panthers, which, hey, that Panthers went
over the was it the Eagles?
Speaker 6 (19:28):
Like?
Speaker 1 (19:28):
Awesome? No? No? The Rams? Right, they beat the Rams great,
But I mean that's that's a one week it's a
one week league, right, And their inconsistencies are to me,
are a bigger picture of who they are. Give me
the Bucks as they begin to get healthy here to
win their final three games and get back on the
winning ways and right back on track into the playoffs.
Give me the Broncos over the Jag What a fun
game that is. I don't trust either picking that game,
(19:50):
but that's kind of my own I guess faults in
terms of not trusting these teams that have been pretty
good all year. But I'll take the Broncos to continue
to solidify their place a top the AF. I'll take
the Falcons over the Cardinals. Eh, Cardinals are basically a
stat patting team at this point and the defense has
been atrocious, So the Falcons I think, even with old
Kirkie Turkey back there can get it done. Detroit over Pittsburgh.
(20:13):
I think Pittsburgh. If Pittsburgh wins this game and then
the Ravens lose, they would have a chance to a
magic number of one with two weeks to play. But
I still think it's gonna come down to Week eighteen
against the Ravens. I think the Lions, with their backs
against the wall, are a far better football team and
have the stuff to really blow this game out in
my opinion. Texans over the Raiders. Obviously, this is the
(20:34):
one that I'm probably gonna get picked off on. It's
like Travis's preconceived notions back in August versus what's actually transpired,
and I usually get a lot better down the stretch.
I mean, every week you're hearing me talk about eleven
to twelve win weeks, but this one I can't shake yet.
I'm taking the Ravens over the Patriots. The Patriots coming
off a huge loss and maybe a chance to lose
(20:54):
their grip on the AFC East, but I think it's
gonna happen. Give me the Ravens over the Patriots to
keep their season a lot, and the Patriots suddenly fighting
for a wildcard spot here down the stretch, not fighting
for but trying to, you know, get the division, but
more likely a wildcard spot. And I'll take the Niners
over the Colts on Monday night, Football's go ahead, cut
the music and pick it up here with Richmond Webb
(21:15):
and his chat with me about Dolphins history and Dolphins alumni.
Our next alumni guest here on the Draft Time podcast
is the great Richmond Webb, hopefully soon to be Hall
of Famer. I think he should be. I know all
you do out there as well, Big Webby. What's up man?
How are we doing?
Speaker 6 (21:29):
Sad?
Speaker 2 (21:29):
Was how you doing?
Speaker 5 (21:30):
Man?
Speaker 7 (21:30):
Glad to be on the show with you think. I
appreciate you spent a few minutes with me.
Speaker 1 (21:34):
Yeah, and likewise to you as well. I spoke with
you on the Dolphins Fish Tank live show a couple
of weeks back and doing all kinds of great content
with some of those guys. And Juice just joined us
for this podcast, so you're gonna be on the same
show with him as well as John Offerdhal, just talking
about some Dolphins memories and you know, big guest list
on Sunday. Man, we're gonna have a lot of ex
Dolphins players out on that field pregame and in the
(21:56):
sweep during the game, and Juice is talking to us
about that. Can you just tell us from your perspective
just what the Dolphins alumni means to you. I know
it's a big deal for so many folks, but for
you specifically, what does it mean to you?
Speaker 7 (22:05):
Well, it's a chance to reconnect with, you know, some
of my teammates, and not only my teammates, but the
guys that either played after me or the guys that
paid the way for me that played before me. So,
you know, to be in the room with like a
you know, a Larry Zanka. I've seen Mster Greasey a
couple of times, but you know some of the guys
that played during the seventies, Larry Little, you know those guys.
(22:29):
And then you know in the eighties, the wife Stevenson,
of course, duper Clayton, you know, just just being able
to kind of you know, we all got the same
thing and come and be able to sit there and
just talk. And then we have the same love for
the for the Dolphins, and we want to see the
current team do just as well as we did back
in our day. And it's just good to see old teammates.
(22:49):
The stories get better as we get older, they keep changing.
So it's really just a really good time to count
of fellowship with the brothers.
Speaker 1 (22:57):
Yeah, I've had I've had the luxury of of you know,
hanging around you guys from time time, just being a
kind of fly on the wall and just hearing some
of the stories and just having my ears open nothing
else really, And I think for a lot of fans
that would be like the ultimate experience. And so, you know,
I'm curious because I go to Indy for the Scout
in Combine, I spent a bunch of time with other
you know, podcasters or writers, people in the industry, and
we talk a lot of shop. You get coaches together,
(23:18):
they're going to talk about football. When you get together
with some of the old guys that maybe played before you,
Like you mentioned, were you guys talking about like hand
placement and footwork and like the proper technique or do
you ever get like that nitty gritty into the footba
stuff at it all?
Speaker 7 (23:30):
Most of the time that nita gritty. I think we
look forward to some of the funny stories. I think
one thing we could always relate on is if you
played for coach Shue, regardless it was seventies, eighties, or nine.
Everybody has stories and you can tell this a believable
story because Coach Hue was kind of the same.
Speaker 2 (23:48):
Way throughout the decades.
Speaker 7 (23:50):
But some of the stories from those guys in the
seventies and the creativity that they had to come up
with certain things to either play jokes on each other,
play jokes on shoe or find ways to get out
of practice is just hilarious. And I love just sitting
back listening to those and soaking it in. So, yeah,
that's mainly what we talk about. Yeah, we don't get
(24:11):
that technical.
Speaker 1 (24:13):
Every ex athlete, whether you stopped in high school or
at the highest level, you miss the locker room the most, right,
Like the chatting with the guys and being around them.
That's what the alumni association here is all about, is
a chance to reconnect with those guys and really kind
of relation to Pride. There's this franchise, and that's what
I wanted to ask you about next, Britchmand because you know,
I joined on twenty twenty, but even like twenty years
removed from your playing career, like, this is still a
(24:34):
very proud organization and this was one that for a
long time was the winning this organization and all of football.
I'm just curious from your perspective, like what it meant
to enter this franchise knowing the storied history of it
all and to be such a big pillar to carry
that tradition forward.
Speaker 7 (24:47):
Yeah, you know, for me, Travis, like I said, I
played in Texas. I grew up in Dallas, and so
I was a huge you know, Dallas cowboy thing growing up.
But then you know after, you know, I would always
see like Marino du Bring Clayton on Monday Night football
while I was in high school or either in college.
And so when I got that call from Coach Shuler,
Coach Shuler was a guy that I put in that
(25:08):
same tier with like a Tom Landry, you know, Chuck
Noll at Pittsburgh.
Speaker 2 (25:13):
He's one of the icons of the.
Speaker 7 (25:15):
Game, and so I knew I was in good hands.
And then you know, getting the opportunity to play with
like Mark Duper, Mark Clayton, those type of guys, and
then actually getting in the huddle with them and meeting them,
it was it was, it was mind blowing. So when
you've been in a good system, like I came out
of good system in Texas A and M, and then
transitioning into that and seeing the discipline, the way the guys,
(25:37):
you know, work, the way the guys carry themselves professionally,
owning off the field, you understand why they had so
much success back then. And so I didn't have to
reinvent the wheel. I just say, Okay, this is what
these guys are doing. I just need the fall in
line and continue to you know, work like they do,
and I should have some of the same success.
Speaker 2 (25:57):
And that's just the way I approached it.
Speaker 1 (25:59):
That's a big reason why so many you know, great
organizations stayed great for so long, right because you have
that established culture of the way things are, and a
player like yourself can just step in and just be
you and play a high level of football. But I imagine
that came with like, you know, you had to acclimate
right away, right. They trusted you to protect the franchise, man,
protect Danny. What was that like stepping into that situation
knowing I'm like, if I get beat at any time,
(26:20):
that could be the end of the year for our
star quarterback.
Speaker 7 (26:23):
You know, Dan, Dan and Koshu already Hall of Fame
worthy before I got there. And so, you know, stepping
into that situation one of the you know at that time,
but I know Dolphin fan is always the best quarterback.
But you know him lway. You know Montana top three,
you know he was always in. He was always in
(26:44):
that or the ranking. No matter who else looked at,
they knew he was that guy. And for me coming
from Texas A and M, where we were a heavily
run option team this and that, and we go from
throwing the football, I get it was a ton and
tremendous amount of credit to my off line coach, John Sandusky,
the way he worked with me and Keith Sims to
get us prepared for what we're going to face and
(27:07):
the transition from going to running the football to throwing
the football. He really got us prepared, and I think
that attributed to a lot of early on success we
had as well.
Speaker 2 (27:18):
As you know, we got.
Speaker 7 (27:19):
Signed pretty early on, so we in training camp, so
we didn't miss much training camp, so we got a
ton of reps. And then working against guys like Jeff
Cross of course offered all Hugh green ej Jr. Those
guys like, we got to get you guys ready to play.
So it wasn't like they weren't just trying to beat
us just to beat us.
Speaker 2 (27:39):
They were saying, look, this.
Speaker 7 (27:41):
Is what you're gonna face every Sunday, so you might
as well get used to it and adjust to the
speed of the game. And they did a great job
getting us ready to play.
Speaker 1 (27:50):
The old adage of make practice as hard as it
can be, so the game feels easier right get out
there and it's a less competition, hopefully than what you
see there in practice. And you got a good baptism
by fire in that regard and all your players production
in those years of you know, the Dolphins being what
they were, playoffs pretty much every single year, you know,
deep runs. It made for a lot of memories for
Dolphins fans for a long time, and millennials like myself
that you know, hang on to those memories from the nineties.
(28:11):
Curious for you, Richmond, whether it was playing after your career,
it can be anything. Do you have a favorite Miami
Dolphins memory that sticks out above all the rest?
Speaker 7 (28:22):
Favorite memory? I think the favorite to this stick out
to me. You kind of asked me a question, Travis,
is I think when I got the call from coach
she was saying, hey, are you ready to be a Dolphin?
And getting drafted by Miami Dolphins and man to actually
have him on the phone, you know what I'm saying,
Coach she would even though it was the first round pick,
(28:44):
but actually hear his voice and be like, man, he
actually caught rather than just somebody from the organization. That
sticks out to me.
Speaker 2 (28:51):
That was big.
Speaker 7 (28:52):
And then I remember after my rookie year, I made
the Pro Bowl, and I can remember we were all
in in the meeting room team meeting room, offense, defense
and everything, and he called out the guys that actually
made it, but he saved my name the last. And
that was a pretty that was pretty big feeling. And
then what really made it good was the way my
teammate celebrated that they were really happy I made it
(29:14):
those two things. That first thing came online.
Speaker 2 (29:16):
When you asked me that question.
Speaker 1 (29:17):
I was gonna say that room probably went nuts when
they heard about the rookie uh making it all the
way to the Pro Bowl. A great rookie season for you,
in a great career, Richmond. Appreciate your time on the
show today. Man, have a blast on Sunday. I know
it's going to be a fun time for all you guys.
And let's go get this one man.
Speaker 2 (29:30):
Sounds good. Thanks for having me on, Travis.
Speaker 1 (29:32):
And I won't I won't make you talk about the
game on Saturday either, not on the show at least.
Appreciate you, Richmond. All right, thank you, last break, finish
up with John Offerdall on the other side Drivet Time
podcast brought to you by Auto Nation. Joining me today
is another Dolphins legend. And if you've been to you
(29:52):
know Fort laud or Airport or around town, you've seen
his restaurants. He is, John Offerdall, one of my favorite restaurants.
By the way, John, when I Dolphins players of all
time as well. John, thanks for joining the show and
how you doing today, Man.
Speaker 6 (30:04):
Great to be on the show, Travis. I'm doing well,
and thanks for plugging my restaurants.
Speaker 5 (30:10):
Off the ground.
Speaker 1 (30:11):
Hey, hey, seagates at fl Man every morning. Every time
I flo out of there, it's a must stop by
John Offer doll As a restaurant and grab yourself a
little bagel and some coffee and get on that plane.
So we appreciate that. We're gonna we're gonna talk about
some meals here in just one second. But I want
to start John with a Dolphins alumni weekend here the
sixtieth anniversary of the Miami Dolphins. And I had Richmond
and jus On and asked them this question, lost the
(30:33):
same one to you. Just tell me about being a
Miami Dolphin man. What it meant to you to be
part of this organization, to be part of this alumni.
How excited you are to see the guys again. Just
take us through what it's like to be part of
that fraternity.
Speaker 2 (30:44):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (30:44):
So I've had the opportunity, along with a lot of
other players, to be part of the Miami Dolphins.
Speaker 5 (30:50):
And it started early when I was a kid.
Speaker 6 (30:51):
I used to watch the Miami Dolphins and their undefeated season.
Speaker 5 (30:55):
Right then it came along the Killer Bees.
Speaker 6 (30:58):
I got to the Super Bowl, By the time I
was drafted, I thought to myself, Oh my gosh, I'm
going to be in that Super Bowl every year with
Dan Marine.
Speaker 5 (31:09):
And I'm honored to.
Speaker 6 (31:10):
Be with Dan this coming weekend because he's one of
the five that come come out of the era of
the eighty five to ninety five, of which I played
along with Richimon Vian.
Speaker 1 (31:19):
Well, yeah, pretty good company. Lots of storied players in
this franchise. You're certainly one of those guys. What's that
conversation like when you get back with Dan? What are
you guys talking about when you and Dan Marino are
chopping up at a Dolphins game.
Speaker 6 (31:31):
Yeah, well, he usually me and says, why wasn't our
defense better? Because I think we would have gone to
the Super Bowl a couple of times at least if
we had better defense. But sadly, back in the late eighties,
the Killer Beams were kind of losing their buzz and
I was on the team but struggling with our defense
to get us to the Super Bowl.
Speaker 1 (31:50):
Do you have a favorite memory from your time with
the Miami Dolphins. Maybe it's maybe it's your post playing career.
The Super Bowl sounds like maybe it was one of
those things, but I'm just curious if they're memory that
sticks out above the rest and your entire life as
a dolphin Miami Dolphin.
Speaker 2 (32:05):
Oh.
Speaker 6 (32:05):
I have a lot of great Shula stories that end
up being memories and sometimes nightmares.
Speaker 5 (32:12):
But I remember my first rookie year.
Speaker 6 (32:14):
It was so memorable because I immediately was called into action as.
Speaker 5 (32:22):
Inside linebackers starting my first game.
Speaker 6 (32:25):
And I'll never forget it was maybe my second or
third game when Coach Schula came up to me before
the game while I was stretching out in the corner
of the end zone, and it was actually the first
Monday night game I ever played in, and he goes offered,
all you're nervous, and I didn't have a lot of
time to respond, but a thousand thoughts went through my head,
(32:47):
and I came up with the wrong answer. I said,
Coach Shula, not really, and he looked at me and
he goes, you go all darn f and better be.
And I'll never forget that because everybody in the corner
of the Orange Bowl end zone hushed up, and I
think everybody in the fan in the stands, the fans
(33:09):
in the stands heard that response, and I tell them
that's the first.
Speaker 5 (33:15):
And maybe the only time I damp my pants and uniform.
Speaker 1 (33:20):
What happened next? Did you go out and you play
a big game? Like? What happened after that? Oh?
Speaker 6 (33:25):
I played good? I mean that my whole rookie year.
I was unbelievable. I was fortunate enough to be the
the rookie of the Year in the NFL.
Speaker 5 (33:34):
And I use that story.
Speaker 6 (33:38):
In many ways for the rest of my life because
it's amazing how some people just don't get the get
it that when they're out and performing or doing something
that matters in life, they don't.
Speaker 5 (33:53):
Seriously take it as as serious as they should.
Speaker 6 (33:59):
And Coach Shula had the amazing ability to pull the
best out of his players.
Speaker 5 (34:06):
When it mattered.
Speaker 6 (34:07):
And you know, I jokingly tell my kids, hey, kids,
are you nervous? And uh, you know, they grew up
with a dad that kind of said, geez, dad, leave
me alone. I'm just playing a you know, pick up
game of basketball. But in life, the things that matter
better be few, and you better get serious about him
and nervous about him in a good way.
Speaker 1 (34:27):
Yeah right.
Speaker 6 (34:28):
Coach Shuler reminded me early in my career that this
was the NFL. This is where professionals play. It's not
a place to be thinking about other things on a
Monday night football game.
Speaker 1 (34:39):
I always say that the nerves just made you care
about something, But it sounds like it sounds like you
were justified to not be nervous, the rookie of the
year that season and playing some good football there.
Speaker 5 (34:47):
Well, put it this way, I was very nervous.
Speaker 1 (34:50):
You want to tell him though, right you look, I
tell the head coach, I'm nervous. So yeah, coach, I'm
ware you to go. So so we have you on
for that reason, John, But also I want to talk
about something larger than football here, and you've been part
of this really cool program here, Handoff Meals for Seniors,
and could you just take us through what that is
what you're doing to get involved with that?
Speaker 5 (35:07):
Sure?
Speaker 6 (35:08):
Well, the Handoff Meals for Seniors actually started when COVID
hit and co owner Stephen Ross went out to his
alumni restaurant tours and gave them an opportunity to serve
the needs of the needy around the stadium and those
who were vulnerable, and amazingly, it was a great gift
(35:30):
and it also opened up doors of opportunity for us
to then provide meals to seniors across Broward County during
the COVID years that lasted their after and the next
thing you knew, we had an opportunity to get a
five year contract through the federal government program that seed
(35:50):
Seniors at homes. Many people know that program as meals
on wheels. Well, we ended up getting the contract. We
were one of a couple providers who got the contract,
and as of today, we're the largest meal provider of
seniors in Broward County and it is an honor and
a blessing to do. That comes with a lot of
(36:12):
responsibilities and opportunities to really not just feed seniors, but
to really connect with them relationally. And we've there's no
doubt that a volunteer who can deliver a meal to
a senior once a week by just picking up the
meal at offered Alls or one of our restaurant vendors
(36:33):
and then taking it to the senior is a lot
more impactful for that senior. And as the new year
starts and holidays come across, we're just trying as best
we can to make that a weird handoff. Meals dot
Com is where people can onboard to volunteer and give
them an opportunity to start the year off with a
(36:54):
relationship that might be new, but one that hopefully will
last for a lifetime.
Speaker 1 (36:58):
I was going to ask you, how can people involved
in you covered right there? For me, this kind of
reminds me of you know, Jason Jenkins is the one
who hired me, and he was a big part of
that as well. I remember handing out meals with him
way back then in those COVID days. So it sounds
like we're continuing the fight there and feeding the need.
Speaker 5 (37:12):
Right right exactly. And you know, I've been very privileged.
Speaker 6 (37:15):
The Miami Dolphins really showcased the opportunity to impact community
and so many of us alumni, the OJ Doc McDuffie's
of the world, you know, Matt Moore's of the world,
they're doing that on a constant, day to day basis,
and it's just a great tribute to the organization to
be able to follow in many of the people who've
gone before us to set the tone.
Speaker 1 (37:37):
That's great stuff, John, the community, Yeah, really really good stuff, man.
I appreciate you coming on talking about that, talking about
the sixtieth anniversary. Enjoy the game Sunday. Enjoy your time
and I'll try to confine your pregame. Sound good.
Speaker 5 (37:48):
All right, let's get away. Thanks for having us.
Speaker 1 (37:50):
As always, John, Thanks man. All right, So there we go.
We will be back next week with the Sunday recap
pod and next week's schedule'll be back to normal for
the final three games of the season before we kick
it into off season mode. We kind of had to
shorten some things. That's because of the the Monday night game,
and I have some stuff on the Wednesday podcast I'm
excited to get into here as we get, you know,
more into prospect talk and the off season and things.
(38:11):
All of that coming into the pipeline here. But until then,
you all please be sure subscribe, rate, review the show,
