Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is Drivetime with Travis Wingfields.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
What is up Dolphins and welcome to the Draft Time Podcast.
I am your host, Travis Wingfield. And on today's show,
the preseason has come to its conclusion. The Dolphins get
through it undefeated as they finished two to zero to
one after a fourteen to six win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Here in the finale, our first and only test run
(00:32):
here at hard Rock Stadium, we'll go through the things
I wanted to see and see how the Dolphins fared
in those categories. My general thoughts, will get the standout performers,
and the five takeaways from the game from the Baptist
Health Studios inside the Baptist Health Training Complex. This is
the Draft Time Podcast. The best part of the entire
game was the updates after the fact from head coach
(00:54):
Mike McDaniel. He discussed the injuries to Jordan Brooks devon
a Chan as well as Jason Sanders, who exited tonight's
game before it began. He said that he doesn't think
it'll be a concern for week one on Sanders, and
that Sanders wanted to kick some extra points in the game,
but coach told him we needed to work on the
two point conversion stuff anyway, So that's what happened there.
Jordan Brooks almost tried to fight coach per coach to
(01:17):
get himself back in the lineup tonight, but they had
to hold him back and he was able to see
the bigger picture, coach said, and not put himself in
harm's way.
Speaker 1 (01:24):
And then Devon A.
Speaker 2 (01:25):
Chan has had no step back so far and nothing
has changed per the week one.
Speaker 1 (01:31):
Timeline approximation. I don't know.
Speaker 2 (01:34):
I was going to try to say a word that
I didn't know what it meant there, but the week
one timeline for Devon ah Chan appears to be on track.
So the things I wanted to see in this game
as we kick things off here with the how did
they fare against the things we were hoping to see
in this game? And number one was the offensive fluidity,
which obviously did not track right away. Two drives, six plays,
(01:55):
two sacks on tu a tongue of Bailoa. Wasn't the
clean operation that the night start guard with a nine
yard gain on a screen pass to my league Washington
that was really close to going out the gate. But
on that play, Jonas avit Naya was five or six
yards down the field.
Speaker 1 (02:11):
You can't do that.
Speaker 2 (02:12):
That's a flag comes back five yards and then Tua
has a little naked boot where he's got a man
wide open once again against a crazy blitz or a
free rusher, i should say, from another crazy blitz package
the Jags throughout the Dolphins offense, which we'll hear from
Mike McDaniel on in just one second about how crazy
that was. And they had a wide open man in
space with all kinds of room to run, but the
(02:33):
ball got batted back into to his face and damn
near picked off as well, so that was good to
see it not get picked off.
Speaker 1 (02:38):
But the offense.
Speaker 2 (02:38):
Struggles out of the gate, and after that first penalty,
they went the next fifteen plays with the first team
offense and we're not penalized, so that was good to
see from an operations standpoint. In fact, they only had
four penalties for eighteen yards on the entire night, which
I thought was also great. Let's go ahead and positive
right here, and that was an X by the way
it didn't come out and show offensive fluidity.
Speaker 1 (02:58):
That was an easy X to get.
Speaker 2 (03:00):
Let's go ahead and hear from coach McDaniel though, on
what he saw from this team tonight and what they
faced from a Jacksonville front that really got after it.
Speaker 3 (03:07):
You know, we had some self inflicted stuff. I hadn't
really planned for the exact presentation of of what what
kind of the defense was doing, and uh, you know,
both get putting yourself behind the eight ball. We're a
little little loose in a route or two, so you
(03:29):
end up not converting and and having to give the
ball back. So you know that that's that happens in
some of your best games, or it can happen. It
can be it can make the game go one way.
You need people to start executing and and make some
plays together, and I thought the group did so as
(03:52):
I was pumped about the resolve. But we'll get back
to the tape and and uh, you know, there's there's
some stuff to get out of it, but overall, the
main thing is that you want to see guys, you know,
find a rhythm and you know, finish a drive in
the end zone. And they did that. So I was
(04:14):
happy with that piece for sure.
Speaker 2 (04:16):
I feel like that kind of further confirms some of
the stuff we talked about all camp long about trying
to focus on the process over the result of making
things difficult on yourself to prepare yourself for the season.
And we're going to find out right like whether or
not that was that was something of value for this
team in this first game or going forward to the
first month of the season, which hopefully looks like it
(04:36):
was in twenty twenty three when you broke all kinds
of records in September versus what it was last year
when it was sluggish before the starting quarterback got hurt
and then it fell off the track entirely. But I
thought that was pretty interesting stuff. And you know, we
heard him talk about the routes being a little bit loose,
and I'm curious to get a look at the tape here.
We'll have a podcast for you guys tomorrow breaking down
all things Dolphins and Jags on the All twenty two.
(04:58):
But that was a separate thing that I had on
my list here of things I wanted to see was
the wide receiver depth battle. And there's a check mark
for a couple and an X for one. And I
don't think it changes who makes the roster as far
as what I would do and what I think will happen.
But I do think I have a change in my
pecking order. First off, Malik Washington was awesome. I think
(05:18):
that he's got a huge role on this football team.
And I keep getting asked the question about who's the
third receiver versus who's the fourth, Like, I don't. I
think you're looking at it wrong when you put it
that way. I think it's more about role based and
different guys do different things, Like Malik Washington is not
going to insert like a tight end like Nick Westbrookakine does,
and Nick's not going to catch punts and run him
back for you. So just different players in general there.
(05:40):
But the player that jumped off the screen to me
once again, not just for how he moves at the
top of the routes off the line of scrimmage with
the football in his hands, but with his blocking, Like
there was a down block he had in a safety
I'm talking about TOAJ Washington's probably go ahead and say
that for you guys, But he got a down block
on a safety where he took him out of the
play for an Oli Gordon like impressive run. And that's
(06:00):
one hundred and seventy four pounds put in the face
and the fan and he plays that way. Man, He's tough,
he doesn't shy away from contact. He runs through you know,
tackles and can bounce off of him for big plays.
Really impressed by him. I think the Dolphins have something
here with the receiver position, you know, five to six deep.
Speaker 1 (06:15):
I thought d.
Speaker 2 (06:15):
S Gridge was the one that kind of had the
step back, wasn't really much of a separator in this
In this game, that's been the case for him and
throughout practice, which is why a lot of those catches
are contested. Which it's good that you can make though,
and we can trust you to make the catch when
guys all over your back, but you got to find
a way to get open too, And I think Malik
has done that, Taj has done that. Westbrook Akine does
that at times when he's asked two in the routes
on top of his blocking. And this Dolphins Dolphins receiving
(06:37):
corps is by far the deepest it has been since
the Reek and Waddle era began. So that's a big
check mark there. Something else I wanted to see Ali
Gordon with the ones and what a massive check mark
that was, right, I mean, he ran awesome in this game.
He had a blitz pick up that you know, spoke
to his ability to be counted on that fourth and
that fourth down conversion was a massive blitz pick up
where he comes across the formation and scan protect and
(06:58):
picks up the last line of of rush there before
Tua gets popped to help him get that pass off.
He was just awesome on critical downs in this game,
and coach talked about his progression so far and how
excited he is about Miami's rookie running back.
Speaker 3 (07:11):
Jalen's uh, you know, we're kind of evaluating a couple
options procedurally. It appears to be the week week to
week category. So you know, I think Allie did a
very good job today, you know, mastering the non uh
(07:33):
non on ball assignments. I thought he he did a
better job with that. I thought he competed uh and
uh uh. For the most part, I think his his
tracks were good, his assignments for so it was it
was a good day for for rookie back in terms
of getting his feet wet, and it didn't look too
big for him. But uh, we'll we'll keep pressing forward
(07:56):
with the group and I look forward to those guys.
Continued improvement.
Speaker 2 (08:02):
Decided to go ahead and run that opening part about
Jalen Wright, I don't think I touched him in the
open with the injury. But some good news there is
this Dolphins running back room with eighth Chan Gordon and
Wright seems to be in a pretty good spot. And
I liked what I saw from Mike Boone in this
game as well, defensive dominance against the Jags. Two massive
check mark there, sack party, the quarterback, had some nice
scrambles getting out of the pocket and making some plays
(08:23):
after the fact. They had like one nice run, but
they did almost nothing the entire game really scored six points,
but those first couple of series for the Dolphins defense man.
We're gonna talk about that more as we go along here,
but that was a big check check mark in that department,
possible key contributors stepping up and guys competing for reps.
And I thought Jason Marshall Junior had a nice first
quarter in the slot with the ones, which was a
(08:45):
big kind of step up for him this week and
practicing in the game. Jordan Phillips, I think you've all
of a sudden got a nose tackled dilemma in terms
of who starts games and who's your number one guy there?
They're both gonna play him and Benito Jones. But I
think Jordan Phillips is ready to be a good player today.
He is there, he is, he is on point. I
thought it was a tough game for Pharaoh Brown jonas
oft Naya. I want to get a better look on
(09:06):
the film room for him. He's obviously gonna be a
major contributor. But I thought that that illegal man down
Phil penalty, like, we can't have that. So they're gonna
check take a look at the rest of the film
and check to see how his day went. Elijah Campbell,
kJ Britt guys kind of trying to carve out roles
in the back end of the defense.
Speaker 1 (09:21):
I thought struggled in this game.
Speaker 2 (09:22):
So I'm gonna go ahead and put an X on
that one because there was only really one that I
thought checked the bucks there. I wanted to see as
if it was gonna be a bunch of work for
Zach Wilson in this game, because my thought was, you know, ideally,
no quarterback outside of tu Us he's a snap the
rest of the season, aside from possible garbage time mop
up duty, and with Zach. You know, you're trying to
build this progression for him in the offense. Get him
(09:43):
as many reps as you possibly can, was kind of
my thought. But they did go to Quinn. You were
as late in the third quarter. I thought you might
see Zach for maybe the entirety of the game, especially
after Thursday's practice when Zach got pretty much all the
reps ahead of Quinn in that practice, but Quinn got
multiple possessions. I thought both played well, but Zach especially.
We'll come back to that. I thought this was the
best I've seen Zach look on a football field since BYU,
(10:07):
which I don't really count that, so we'll come back
to that in one second. And then I wanted to
get more information on the cornerback position. I don't think
we really got an answer here because the past Qush
kind of ruined that right and you can't really evaluate
the corner play too much when there's not a lot
going on down the field. But also, isn't that a
good thing? I mean, isn't that kind of how it
was built. I did like seeing Jason Marshall, and mostly
(10:28):
because of the variety in which the ways that he
was used. There was a rep where he wheeled out
and wound up covering a split field safety look and
it might have been quarter quarter a half. I have
to get a look on that on film. But he
was in the slot and wind up being deep safety.
And he's one of those interchangeable pieces in that way
if he can become that and be a quality player
in that regard that Minka Fitzpatrick is, and that allows
(10:48):
you to mix up your back end presentation the same
way you mix up your rush presentation, and it's going
to be a lot for quarterbacks to figure out when.
Speaker 1 (10:56):
You do that.
Speaker 2 (10:56):
So I thought that was we'll call that a neither
check nor X because I just didn't get enough info
in that position. Because of how this game played out
with the pass rush up front. Some general thoughts before
we go to the first break here, check the Mariner score.
They're losing on the tenth thing not good. I really
liked the energy on the sidelines all preseason, Like Willie
(11:17):
Gay was dancing like a madman out there.
Speaker 1 (11:20):
He had to be held back a few times.
Speaker 2 (11:21):
Jalen Phillips and Bradley Chubb going after Derek mcbendon after
his sack that he made really cool to see this
team so engage the way they are. They were out
of sorts offensively in those first couple of series. Right
had a nice drive starter, but Jonah was five yards downfield.
Good coaching opportunity there for him, and course of course
that rule is different in college.
Speaker 1 (11:38):
So perhaps you can kind of hang your hat on
the idea that he.
Speaker 2 (11:41):
Would have been in a better spot had he, you know,
put that thing on tape and you know, coming to
the pros, you can't do that. I thought to, you know,
play a little bit anxious at first he stepped into
that sack. I know it's popular to bag on Larry Borham,
but a three man rush where you widen the guy
and then the quarterback steps up right into the B gap,
he can't really be expected to, you know, to block
(12:02):
ten yards of space.
Speaker 1 (12:03):
And Tua kind of ran himself into that one. I
just thought to.
Speaker 2 (12:05):
His feet were not what they usually are, a little
bit antsy, a little bit dancy, if you will, as well.
And the other sack was Farrell Brown got beat across
his face. And so between that and Tua not being
on the same page with Tanner Connor a couple times,
which seems to kind of keep happening this this training camp.
That was one of the big picks the Bears had
in practice against him was Tanner, Connor and Tua being
on different pages. So that was kind of a frustrating
(12:27):
thing to watch. But they also we were playing a
certain type of game, and you know, I made this
point to Juice in the post game show and he said,
if this is the case, you shouldn't be playing. And
I don't know, I'm just I'm just kind of pontificating
this for speculating. Is that the wrong word I use there?
But like, the number one goal is to get too
out of the game healthy today, right like, And that
was accomplished, but it just looked like it was a
(12:47):
little bit jittery and anxious at first. And then my
last general thought and we'll get on this on the
takeaways as well as the defensive potential I thought really
showed itself in this game, albeit a very limited sample size,
but the overload and pressure opportunities, the sim pressures. We
saw Jordan Phillips peel back into a hooks oone coverage
and one of those big defensive tackles this year is
gonna get themselves a pick. I just know it's gonna happen,
(13:09):
and I can't wait for the day that it does,
because whether it's Benito or Jordan, or Kenneth Grant or Zach,
it's gonna be a lot of fun to watch. So
those are the general thoughts and takeaways. Let's go ahead
and take our first break, come back and talk about
the standouts, the standdowns, all that in segment two coming
up on the Draft Time podcast, brought to you by
Auto Nation. It's the portion of the show where we
(13:30):
talk about the stats from the game. And in this game,
the Dolphins out gained the Jags two thirty nine to
two oh seven. We're four for twelve on third down,
but three for three on fourth down. Jacksonville five for
fourteen on third down, one for one on fourth down.
Miami had sixteen first downs to Jacksonville's twelve. We threw
it for one fifty two, ran it for eighty seven.
(13:51):
The Jags only passed for eighty six yards, ran for
one twenty one in this game, only one hundred and
eight plays. That's why the game got over in less
than three hours. You'd love to see that. Miami four
penalties for eighteen yards. The Jags eight for sixty. We
had our quarterback sacked six times. That was kind of
the big one that jumped out of you in terms
of the bad stats for the Miami Dolphins in this game.
Speaker 1 (14:10):
So there you go.
Speaker 2 (14:11):
Let's go ahead and talk about the individual standouts from
this game. That's the most important part of these preseason contests,
and start with Malik Washington, who my goodness, man. The
punt return stuff has been apparent for a long time,
but you saw it Morgan today. Two for twenty seven
in this game. Three catches forty one yards and a touchdown,
a critical fourth down catch, a twenty five yard catch
and run for us for six where he makes a
(14:32):
guy missed by stopping on a diamon changing directions. You
know this guy, man, he's got a lot of traits
in the toolback. And when you hear the coach talk
about a player like this, well, you know he's gonna
be here for quite a while.
Speaker 3 (14:43):
His personality and his play. He's a competitor that really
is super fearless and the moment is not too big
for him. You know, we as a rookie in the
middle of the season last year in a game that
(15:04):
you're you're I think we're two and six at the time.
On on national television, he made the third down big
big was it third down? Or he made the big
corner route completion, and I think that everybody saw that,
on top of how he started the game with a touchdown,
(15:24):
that he was a gamer. So his competitive greatness is
kind of defined by John Wooden as being your best
when your best is required, and that's that's Malik Washington.
Speaker 2 (15:37):
To a t.
Speaker 1 (15:37):
You certainly need guys like that on your football team.
Speaker 2 (15:40):
Did you see the block that Nick Westbrook had on
his touchdown run. That's if you want to know what
NWI does, well, that's it right there, Ollie Gordon. I
mean I kind of already had my answers on his
running and pass receiving. He just looked even better as
a runner in this game. I think with more touches
that he gets and more outside zone opportunities, he's going
to continue to shine that way in a big way.
(16:01):
And my goodness, man, that blitz pick up just told
you everything you wanted to know about his game.
Speaker 1 (16:06):
McDaniel talked about him continuing.
Speaker 2 (16:08):
To approve the work without having the football in his hands,
and we saw that. I thought more in this game
as well, the way he can press and get parallel
to the lastcrimadge and get vertical for that linear yardage
accumulation we talked about with coach talking about Raheem Mostert
last year, the last couple of years, just I don't
know what else to say, Like he's getting to the
point to where I think he's earning like significant touches
(16:30):
during the season, because not only does he improve your
ability to convert short yardage if he can do all
those things in those critical areas with pass pro with
run game, with pass game, but you want to grind
a game out in the fourth quarter and run your
four miint offense, doesn't it kind of seem like his
ability to press gaps and then get vertical and get
downhill and push piles for additional yards the way he
(16:51):
did in this game, Isn't that kind of what you want,
especially in a South Florida heat, Like if you've got
to lead on the Buffalo Bills here in the fourth
quarter and you got to put him away, let's put
Alli Gordon downhill on those guys. It seems like a
nice competition there in that running back room, and Alli
Gordon has really given us something I don't think this
team has had in the Mike McDaniel era through three
preseason games and training camp. He's got to prove it
(17:11):
in the season, but right now he looks like he's
giving you something you haven't had in that time.
Speaker 3 (17:16):
Here.
Speaker 1 (17:17):
Aaron Brewer just is awesome. What a great player he is.
Speaker 2 (17:19):
He gets downfield and puts guys in their backs over
and over again. Had multiple pancakes in this game once again.
Patrick Paul had a nice clamp and seal off the
edge where he kind of kicked in the four eye
technique and created a lane for Ollie Gordon. But I'll
look more at the offensive line and get to those
guys film on the show tomorrow again. Zach Wilson I
thought was his best showing as a professional football player.
(17:40):
Like I'm sure he had better games for the Jets,
but the accumulation of that tape was ugly, right, And
what he did for the Broncos last year and the
preseason was okay, But there was some flashes tonight. He
threw to spots with good timing and rhythm and put
the ball in positions for his guys to make plays
and run through catches and like man, the fourth and
(18:00):
sixteenth throw was sick. Had one bad sack where he
got going backwards and took a big loss there, but
bounce back with the fourth and sixteen play. I thought
Zach played really well in this game and showed you
that the trajectory and progress you wanted to see from
him within this offense. Keon Smith I thought was his
best showing of the preseason by quite a wide margin.
He had some nice widening blocks in the running game
and a good anchor and pass pro I thought Braden Daniels,
(18:22):
I'll check the tape on these guys tomorrow, but I
thought he continued to get movement off that front side
three technique and had some good second level climbs in
the running game as well. I mentioned Taj Washington in
the earlier portion of the show, just explosive at the
top of the route, good release game plays so much
bigger than his size would suggest a one hundred and
seventy four pounds, You just don't notice it when you're
not field level with him. I thought Mike Boom looks
(18:44):
to be like a pretty good in season, or rather
in camp veteran ad to the roster I imagine he'll be
a guy that, if he doesn't make the team, can
be called back to the practice squad as a potential
game day call up if you need him. I love
the way he feels outside zone that touchdown that he
ran there, Like Jackson Carmen got beat pretty bad and
Hayden Rouchie hold Rooch dog sealed that thing down to
(19:05):
create that lane. But the way he pressed it inside
to compress the defense allowed him to bounce outside and
win the race to the corner for six.
Speaker 1 (19:12):
That was cool to watch from him.
Speaker 2 (19:14):
And he didn't get the big eyes right away, right
He kind of pressed that thing and stayed patient and
ran the way you're supposed to. I thought Addison West
did a really good job getting movement at the point
of attack, staying connected on combination blocks. Had a really
nice anchor on a third and long pass pro rep
where Quinn Yewers got dumped by somebody else that got
beaten that play defensively, the three edges man Jalen Phillips
(19:35):
that the pass rush arsenal that he has along with
his size and power and you know, starting to build
more and more towards the athletic combination that he offers
as an athlete in terms of the movement skills. I
think that getting him back is going to be so massive.
And like you talk about what is this guy going
to be as a pro after two injuries, Like you
know what he is. He's a great He's a really
(19:56):
good football player. Bradley Chubb to me, looks really good
back on his old track. Powerful enough juice though to
threaten the edge and the power to redirect back inside
the way you can combine the power that him and
Phillips play with to the speed with Chop Robinson and
Willie Gay like issues man, that first damn play of
the game, you widen out the JAD and Phillips to
(20:16):
cover up of a slot receiver. He winds up coming
and the right tackle gets all that's with and you
open the freaking gate in the B gap and Chop
Robinson running full speed down. That is an easy room
service sack. The same is true of Willy Gay working
behind Bradley Chubb getting a similar type of a pressure
with the rep that way coming off the edge, Minka
and if he back on the back end, you know,
(20:36):
very brief. I thought did well in coverage, communicated well, passed,
off and rotated, did all that kinds of stuff you
want to see. But again, tough to assess the defensive
backfield because the front was so dominant in this game.
Changing Tyndall I thought was awesome the first drive of
the second half, that run fit and then he wins
a foot race of the perimeter and gets over a
block and has a big collision outside there as well.
I don't think he'll make this team because the linebacker
(20:59):
position is too That's just my prediction, but I think
that he's earned the right to be on somebody else's
roster and could possibly be like the one guy that
gets claimed off waivers. Waiver claims don't happen that often,
so usually you can bring guys back to the practice squad.
But I could see Changing Tendall going to a team
that needs some linebacker help because he's he's played well
as preseason. Jordan Colbert is pretty controlled, playing from depth
and run support. He got notes a lot this summer,
(21:21):
something I noticed from him throughout the course of these
practices and games. I thought Isaiah Johnson was pretty solid
and coverage and run support, but I gotta check the
tape on that again before I can really rubber stamp that.
Alex Huntley had some good disengagements and rode the wave
out wide a few times. John Saunders a game clinching pick.
Nice job feeling that coverage and getting underneath the route
taking it back to the direction for a big return.
Both he and Ethan Robinson had some pretty good camps
(21:44):
and could be developmental pieces that you can maybe steak
on the practice squad. They both get takeaways to close
out the last two weeks, and then Cameron Danceler had
two good tackles down the stretch in space. I'll give
him some credit for that. The standdowns offensively, I didn't
think TWA played well. And you gotta watch the feet, man,
if the feet are out of sorts, so as Tua,
I thought they were out of sorts tonight. I thought
Pharoll Brown, you know, damn near dropped that two point conversion,
(22:06):
got beaten pass pass pro for a sack, and also
tripped over a guy in the route. Combination just didn't
really put it together for me. Tanner Connor, like you know,
it's you don't see him make these tough catches and
they keep coming up in opportunities like they always seem
to go incomplete when it's bang bang or in contested
catch area. Gotta find a way to make those catches.
(22:27):
And there was the third down before the fourth down,
he had a drop. He's been on the wrong page
of two a couple times, and I'm not gonna blame
two for that because two knows the offense better than anybody.
So it'd been a rough I think preseason for Tanner
Connor that way. D s Gridge had to drop another
catch he could have made that he didn't make. Did
get a later catch on a ball that was put
on him, but I thought he struggled to get open
in this game and didn't catch the football when he
(22:47):
had opportunities. Thought Banito Jones kind of got rolled out
of some things early in the game, especially in the
in the quarterback run game.
Speaker 1 (22:54):
In those successful plays, the Jags.
Speaker 2 (22:56):
Quarterback had running a round back there and the way
Jordan Phillips is playing too, like you know, it's I
kind of have my thoughts on who knows tackle one
is at this point, and I think the young guy
is pushing for it. Elijah Campbell. I thought the angles
from depth weren't that great and didn't make some tackles
that he had a chance to make in the game.
kJ Bray, I didn't think saw as well as he
usually does tonight. Quintin bell I thought had a tough
(23:16):
night as a rusher and had one that he got
through and he didn't finish. And then Patrick McMorris the
coverage continues to be something that seems to be a
little bit for him, but also the run fitting from
depth was a bit of a struggle in this game tonight.
Speaker 1 (23:26):
So there you go.
Speaker 2 (23:27):
We'll come back and have the full film review tomorrow,
but we're gonna finish up this podcast on the other
side with five takeaways from the dolphins fourteen to six
win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. That's Next Draft Time podcast,
brought to you by Auto Nation, last takeaways before we
get to the regular season against the Indianapolis Colts, and
the first takeaway from this game, and it kind of
(23:49):
plays into the Colts preview with two offensive linemen they're
new there on the interior and Daniel Jones at quarterback,
is the number of types of looks this defense can
give opposing per detection plans looks to be an absolute
issue again. The chop sack where they widen out Jalen
Phillips and he gets a free rundown. The big gap,
Willie Gay has an unblocked pressure as well. I know
(24:10):
that that was a backup offensive line, but the way
they can threaten two players on the line with with
you know, two man pressure, and I can beat you
to either post inside or outside at the guard and
tackle position, or I can stunt, or I can drop
into coverage and I can bring a linebacker, I can
I can bring a defensive tackle around and pick stunt you.
Speaker 1 (24:26):
It's a lot to contend with.
Speaker 2 (24:27):
And all those guys are damn good football players, and
I think it's it's gonna be a lot for teams
to deal with, especially bad quarterbacks. You know, Daniel Jones
I think is in that list justin fields and week fours.
In that list, we'll see about Drake Man week two,
Bryce Young in week five, the Browns quarterback whoever the
hell that is in week seven, you know, the Saints
quarterback in week thirteen.
Speaker 1 (24:47):
Fields again in week fourteen.
Speaker 2 (24:49):
Like, there's some quarterbacks on this on the schedule now
that I think you're gonna really really kind of have
a hard time scoring on this front because of all
they can offer, and I thought we saw that in
this game today. Number two, a slow start offensive certainly
was not what you wanted to see, but I'm glad
they got the reps out of the way for that reason.
Obviously not a pretty start. We talked about that. That's
why I think you do these preseason games. And you know,
(25:10):
this offense got four drives with two at the Helm,
sixteen plays in Chicago, what was it like fifteen plays
again here, so thirty snaps on tape for the first
team offense with you know very you know, mixes of
lineups there with.
Speaker 1 (25:22):
Who play with Tua.
Speaker 2 (25:23):
But I'm glad to see that on tape without eight
Chan Austin, Julian Tyreek and alec Ingold. But again, you're
gonna have games here banged up, so there's value value
there and working with the backups with Tua as well.
Number Three, uncovering young talent at the skill spots. Think
about what Olie Gordon if he continues to go the
way he's looked so far, and Lake Washington as well
in that regard, like talk about the lack of depth
(25:45):
at the skill groups over the course of the McDaniel,
Tua Tyreek and Waddle era, they've got some juice there now.
And you talk about rookie contracts, you know, Malik with
you know, three more years in his contract and Ali
Gordon still in the first year of his four year
rookie contract, and gosh, you can really round out your
depth the receiving spot, the running back spot, and continue
to find ways to beat teams with options beyond your
(26:06):
first two or three guys. And Ali with the power runs,
the decisiveness, the way he moves, piles, the blitz pickups,
the pass receiving game. Just cannot feel better about Olie
Gordon right now, the way he can convert you know,
short yardage a four minute offense back.
Speaker 1 (26:19):
I like all that.
Speaker 2 (26:20):
And I add Malik here because we've known about Reek
and Waddle and eight Chan for years. But you know,
Malik got some rundown the stretch last year. But it
looks like you finally developed some young guys that can
contribute on this team beyond the top two guys, and
especially in that receiving corps with Malik Washington. And my
fourth takeaway was gonna be Jason Sanders related, but we
got the update there from Mike mcdails. We'll go ahead
(26:40):
and pass on that and just finish up with this
and get the hell out of here.
Speaker 1 (26:44):
We made it. We're here.
Speaker 2 (26:45):
Camp is over, the preseason is over. Enjoy your last
week with your families. I kind of kid there before
football begins, but really, I mean, we're not lying there, right.
We'll go ahead and review the film of this game
on the show tomorrow and have a roster cut down
content the following week as well. This coming week presser content.
We're gonna hear from Chris Greer and some players later
(27:06):
on this week and Mike McDaniel, and before you know it,
we're gonna preview the season and preview the Colts. But
until then, it's twelve thirty at night. You all please
