Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is Drivetime with Travis Wingfield. What is up Dolphins?
And welcome to the Draft Time Podcast. I am your host,
Travis Wingfield. And on today's show, the Dolphins are winners
in Detroit. And this is normally where I would insert
(00:22):
the Jay Rock song, but we're not gonna do it
for the preseason.
Speaker 2 (00:25):
Sound good?
Speaker 1 (00:26):
Another strong start capitalized by an even stronger finish from
the Dolphins offense, and they beat the lines by the
final twenty four to seventeen in Detroit. And if you're
keeping track of the series, we won one practice and
the games, I guess we took the series.
Speaker 2 (00:38):
We've got the things.
Speaker 1 (00:39):
I wanted to see checklist, general takeaways, individual standouts and
stand downs, five takeaways, all of that much more from
my house, not the Baptist Hill Studios. This is the
Draft Time Podcast. So we're gonna do this thing I
do every week this year. That's a sentence that was real.
I'm gonna take a checklist of things I wanted to
(01:00):
see before the game and see how they performed against
those things within the game and for the preseason. Those
are always going to be a little bit different, as
you can imagine. And today that list looked like this
reset the line of scrimmage with consistency, be a tough
football team win the trenches, and we saw Kenny Grant
doing it with regularity, Butnito Jones as well. I thought offensively,
(01:22):
Daniel Brunskill had some of that. I thought Jonas and
I Naya had some of that. In some reps. It
was a bit up and down. Not nearly as dominant
as the Bears game in that regard. Jordan Phillips and
Derek McClendon had some big physical reps. Talk about all
of that coming up here, but I thought they passed
it barely with a check mark. Not as emphatic as
it was last week, but I am going to give
him a check mark on this particular spot. I wanted
(01:43):
to see some showcase performances from the question spots on
the roster right now, the starting cornerbacks. They got the
run right. We heard coach McDaniel talk after the game
about the decision to play certain guys and not play
certain guys and getting all the young guys reps. The
entire draft class got reps in this game, and trying
to get guys in the defensive backfield who are competing
for starting spots, get them reps to further unveil what
(02:05):
that competition looks like at this point in time. And
we saw those that position, to me, not really have
anybody stand out and seize the moment. And then the
tight end position, I thought Pharaoh Brown really struggled in
this game. I thought Tanner Connor had some really nice
moments but also had a couple moments he probably wants back.
And the tight end group in general didn't really do
(02:28):
that either. But the backup offensive line I felt did
do a little bit of that. We'll talk more about
that in a second. And the quarterbacks I thought was
one up, one down. So for me, this was not
a check. This was an X on something I wanted
to see pregame that did not play out that way
during the course of the game. Something else I wanted
to see was which of the running backs might emerge
in the absence of Alex Madison. And you came into
(02:50):
camp this year thinking Madison was going to be like
the fourth guy that maybe had a tough time making
the roster, and the way he played through camp and
that Bears game, at least the start of it, you
might have been thinking he was in line for running
back two responsibilities, and he gets hurt and you wind
up putting him on IR and now all of a sudden,
the running back room complexion looks a lot different. So
I wanted to see between Jalen Wright and Allie Gordon
(03:15):
the second and we also got Aaron Shamplin and Mike
Boone out there as well. Will someone emerge as kind
of that, you know, like pop the next guy that
stands out.
Speaker 2 (03:23):
And I think that we did see that.
Speaker 1 (03:25):
You know, Jalen Wright fumbled and that's been an issue
for him this training camp, and I thought had some
runs where he didn't really see it the right way.
And you saw Shamplin and Boone both have Shamplin had
a run against outside zone, cutting back against the grain
that looks like he had been in an outside zone
system before. Go figure and Mike Boone had some good
work as well. But Allie Gordon the catch and run
(03:46):
on that opening his first drive of the game, the
third and one play where he converted that kickoff play,
I just think that was that tells you about the
way his mind works and the way he processes the game.
We'll talk more about Alli Gordon here in a second,
but I'm gonna give this one a big check mark,
and it was the rookie that did it for me.
I wanted to see another surge in the non Reek
and Waddle wide receiver position group, and I think the
(04:07):
Dolphins told you who the top four were today, and
I don't think there was any surprise about that with
both Malik and Nwi getting days off today. But Taj
Washington and D. S. Gridge showed out, and Aszukama had
a chance, I thought he didn't quite stand up to
that chance. We'll talk about that more in a second,
but d S. Gridge, my goodness, what a game from him.
I like Taj Washington's work as well, so to me,
(04:30):
the fact that I feel like you have six pretty
good ones right now, I'm going to give that a
big check mark as well. And then I wanted to
see guys that were trying to push for roster spots
show more of that, and I'm going to give us
one a big check because I thought both Derek McClendon
aka Derek mcbendon and Brayden Daniels and Grays and Murphy
are all guys trying to carve out a role on
this roster, and I thought they had really good games
across the board. For those guys, I thought both the
(04:51):
new running backs looked good. It might make a decision
come cut down day for a possible fourth back in
that room where it looked like it was going to
be the four obvious ones going into this.
Speaker 2 (05:00):
Then you lose Madison.
Speaker 1 (05:01):
And upcamp from Gord maybe a bit of a downcamp
from right, and that changes the equation there a little bit.
But I think that those guys, you know, maybe give
you another option that running back room, and I wanted
to see, you know what. This isn't really for the roster,
so this doesn't really include this part. But Quinn, Youewers
and theowiest junior both had big games and what that
might mean going forward. More thoughts on that in one second,
but I'm gonna give that one another big check. So
(05:22):
I think we are one for five on those things,
maybe or sorry, four for five, maybe three and a
half for five, but I'm gonna go with four for five.
One things I wanted to see in this game accomplished
by your Miami Dolphins. Next, I want to talk about
my general thoughts, and this is gonna be a much
more what's the word I want to use here, applicable
segment come the regular season, as we'll talk about, you know,
(05:45):
certain scheme designs that worked, things we saw previously on
tape versus the opponent that maybe they saw in the
in the preparation for the game. It'll be more in
depth with that regard to the just general administration of
the game and also kind of take away the big
moments in the big call in the games and how
certain things play out at the crucible moments. For this,
it's a little bit less so, but I do want
(06:06):
to talk about this because Juice and I referenced the
article that came out on the Athletic or in the
Athletic however you would phrase that nowadays it's not a
print publication, So I guess on Theathletic dot com about
Mike McDaniel's vision for how to quote unquote rebuild the Dolphins,
And we had a discussion about do they need rebuilding
because they've kind of been you know, within the same
(06:28):
frame of the build or different you know, different cycles
of the build, but the same framework of the original
build for five six years now, so and they haven't
gone below eight wins in that five years, So that
was kind of a curious headline, but I get the
idea behind it because this is for the first time
I feel like, you know, McDaniel inherited a roster that
wasn't really his and it was a good one. Like
it was a really good roster back in twenty two.
(06:50):
And I still contend that if two it doesn't get hurt.
In twenty two, that team had just as much potential
as the team in twenty three did. Hell, they went
to Buffalo and pushed them to the brink and we're
fifty yards away from a game winning touchdown. Was Skyler
Thompson at the helm and Scott is probably gonna be
a quarterback three in this league this year and beyond.
But within that year, that was kind of a roster
that he took over, and I felt the Dolphins felt
(07:12):
they were pretty close and got aggressive and went after
you know, Bradley Chubb that year and and got Tyreek
Hill previously and Jalen Ramsey and you know a lot
of those picks that you know, if they maybe had
kind of stayed the course a little bit and would
have had more young talent akin to what you have
right now, and Chop and Pat and Kenneth and Jonah
and Jordan Phillips and these guys that are emerging as
potential young hits on the roster, that maybe you would
(07:34):
have this different outlook for how the Dolphins are right now.
And I think that, you know, kind of the the
takeaway from that article in general was that the like
idea of a seven eight year like a longtime veteran
roster veteran in this league who's been on multiple rosters
and has made his money, maybe this isn't the place
for them, because you kind of get the sense that
those are the guys that were checked out, and that
(07:54):
was kind of what they talked about in the Athletic article.
But beyond that, I wanted to discuss this because Mike
in the article that he feels like stronger, healthier, and
fresher than he has in a long time. And it
got me thinking about that twenty twenty three start to
the season and the exit motion against the Chargers that
was unveiled that nobody that had gone to a Dolphins practice,
and this includes me, knew that it was coming because
(08:16):
they keep that stuff under wraps and last year, like
you were, I pontificated the exact same thing on the
podcast what is it going to be?
Speaker 2 (08:24):
This year? And last year wasn't really eye popping.
Speaker 1 (08:26):
It was kind of a screen game, a screen collection
that didn't really pop off. But it's got me thinking
about what might that be in twenty twenty five. And
it wasn't anything eye popping today. But there was a
lot more how do I say this, not game plan,
but like intentional design with the concepts that I thought
were schemed open some looks for both Quinn and Zach,
(08:49):
like the touchdown that Zach missed in the back corner
of the end zone to an open aj Henning. I
think it was I could be wrong on the receiver there,
but he had the open man in the back of
the end zone. The fourth down play was the sack turnal.
If he threw an accurate ball back there, it's a
touchdown on the Dolphins. You know, go when this game
going away. That was a cool play design. There was
some cool run design, some cool screen designs. There was
some cool stuff in terms of freeing space in the
(09:11):
middle of the field with how they orchestrated their looks
versus the defense. So I'm really curious to see about that.
I think we had the first taste of that today
and OJ and I spoke on the post game show
about you know what it might look like with regards
to you know this week well, because there was a
report from the Lions that they kind of shifted their
practice methodology this week to go away from what can
(09:35):
this offense do to stretch its limits and how much
can they get away with? Versus what does Jared God
feel comfortable with? And they went to the what does
Jared God feel comfortable with approach this week and he
looked awesome in those practices. So I'm curious if the
Dolphins will make that shift this week or next or
at some point and kind of go from evaluation mode
and when that happens to a game plan mode. I
thought we saw a little piece of the design and
(09:57):
makeup of the offense today.
Speaker 2 (09:58):
Something else.
Speaker 1 (09:59):
General thought the under coverage continues to pop for me,
and what I mean by that is the guys that
are pinning in the gunners and punt team. Like on
the first return the d s Ridge fumble, he had
acres of space and it was because of the way
they knocked out the gunners and it continued throughout the game.
It was a theme last week. They've been giving these
return guys plenty of space to make plays. I tell
you what, if this Dolphins team starts winning games in
(10:20):
the margins, they're gonna be really freaking good because they
haven't done it in four In three years previously, they've
won games off of explosive offense and timely defense. They
can start winning games in the margins too. That's going
to be make them really tough out this year. And
speaking of that, the special teams was not as good
today as it was last week. Three of the first
four plays were a block in the back, a fumble,
(10:41):
and a short punt. But they did bounce back with
some better plays later on in the game, including some
big returns and some nice punts from Jake Bailey. On
the special teams coverage there short yardage conversions a continued
commitment this week and putting that stuff on tape. Third
and fourth and ones, and in short yardage that one
yard Jalen run, Jalen run, Jalen Wright run. I thought
(11:01):
was a really impressive piece of blocking. And anytime you
can get the running back one on one at the
line of scrimmage with a linebacker or a safety, it's kind
of what you want. It's his job to make that
guy miss and the lines are gonna sell out to
fit the run that way and create that one on
one situation. And so you hit that with a one
yard conversion, you hit one on a pass play conversion,
which if you keep putting those runs on tape and
(11:21):
you keep converting them, those pass players are going to
open up for you.
Speaker 2 (11:24):
So I thought that was good to see.
Speaker 1 (11:25):
And Kyle Krabs had a great tweet about hanging the
banner of the Dolphins converted a third and short. Of course,
that's what the Dolphins fan, based on social media, wants
to see more than anything. Another takeaway and I put
this on Twitter and you guys seem to like it,
so let's talk about it some more. Was the sideline
shots throughout the course of the game. There was a kickoff.
Was it after like a go ahead touchdown on the
fourth court, maybe the one that put him ahead by
(11:45):
the field goal, whatever the heck it was, man, there
was a clip of that sideline and it looked like
my little league baseball team. What I mean by that
is that the big leaguers they don't, you know, sit
there on the edge of the dugout and chant all
their stupid songs about b A b A yeah A
sah dot t bass hit. I did that wrong, Leave
me alone. It was thirty years ago. That was what
(12:06):
baseball coach as well as you do, was to be
on the sideline and say I'm like, hey, pitch, pitch, Yeah.
We wound up being bad at not a broken ladder.
I don't know why I turned jersey there, but that's
what you saw on the Dolphins sideline today.
Speaker 2 (12:17):
And it was everybody.
Speaker 1 (12:18):
They were all up and engaged and into the game
and into what was going on and celebrateing their teammates.
Speaker 2 (12:23):
We saw two a tongue of I.
Speaker 1 (12:24):
Lowe was the first person to congratulate a guy making
a tackle on special teams. He was engaged with Quinn
and Zach throughout the course of the game. Minka Fitzpatrick
had a call sheet and was taking notes. We saw
aj Henning make a mistake and fumble a muff upunt
and then come back and have a big kickoff return
and everybody's there tapping him up and tapping him on
the helmet and say I'm like, hey, like good way
to bounce it back right there. Ollie Gordon makes a
(12:45):
great smart play on special teams to put his foot
on the sideline and grab the ball, because if you
do that on a kickoff, it's a it's a legal procedure,
it's a kickoff out of bound. So great heads up
play there. Everyone came down there to celebrate with him
on that play as well. So man talk about McDaniel
building this thing to his vision and really taking over
a roster that was you know it was his. I
(13:06):
don't want to say it wasn't, but like this is
I think the first time that he's really kind of
opened up his imprint to put on the entire team
and try to be like, no, this is how we're
going to do things. It's not like, hey, we got
these really good players, let's just let him go play football.
You can tell like McDaniel got to this point because
how did he get through Yell and play football for Yell?
Because he outworked everyone and did the Nordic sled ab
(13:27):
workouts that Marcel Louis Jack wrote about in the ESPN
dot com article back in February. How did you get
to this place as a professional football coach where you know,
maybe his looks and his quirk were not the pro
typical you know what a coach looks like on ES
Central casting.
Speaker 2 (13:41):
And so how did he get through that obstacle? He
outworked everybody.
Speaker 1 (13:44):
And so for a football team that that loves this
stuff and puts it together the way that he does
and wants to be the smart, hard working, you know,
I'm doing this because I freaking love it type of
stuff that's gonna resonate and you're gonna get guys that
do that. And I saw it for eleven days in
that road trip, man, I was there for that. They
showed that to me at a dinner and I thought
it was cool to see, and I think you're seeing
it play out. I just think that this is really
(14:06):
really a team that is not gonna have the pitfalls
of previous years happened because I think they built it
in a certain vision and everything was funnel through that
key vision, and I think you're seeing the fruits of
that labor payoff so far. Something else that was a
standout was if you're not gonna be on your p's
and q's with snap counts and alignment and stuff of
that nature, then you can't be here, and I'm not
(14:27):
gonna call him out as far as like not making
the roster, but Rikazukama has to find out where to
get lined up. I think people are gonna dunk on
Larry Borum for the two procedural calls. It was two
receivers both times. In fact, after Azukama got popped and
took a big play off the board. Before that, I
should say, he was on the wrong side of the
field and you see Zach Wilson call him over and
say you're over there, dude, and he goes over and
lines up and covers up the tackle or the tight end,
(14:49):
I should say, and it gives us a five yard
procedural penalty. And you see Larry Borr on the next
play like check for the ref for him, like, hey,
is he good?
Speaker 2 (14:56):
Because I don't want to get flagged for this again.
And we're in year four.
Speaker 1 (14:59):
We got to get lined up those guys that can
get lined up, and if you can't do that, then
you can't play on this offense and we're not going
to deal with it. I think anymore should be the
message going forward, and I expect expect that to be
the case. First break right there. Come back and do
the stats from the football game. We'll do the standouts
and the standdowns. We'll have five big picture takeaways as well.
All of that coming your way here on the Draft
Time Podcast, brought to you by Auto Nation. Dolphins twenty
(15:23):
four to seventeen winners to move to one to zho
to one in the preseason. In twenty twenty five, they
take out the Detroit Lions, who I believe fall to.
Speaker 2 (15:32):
Oh to two on the season. Is trouble in Detroit brewing.
You have preseason football. Let's go ahead and.
Speaker 1 (15:37):
Look at some stats here from this game. The Dolphins
twenty one first downs to the Lions eighteen. That's pretty
much on line with how the game went, I felt.
But how about this discrepancy? Seven for thirteen were the
Dolphins on third down? The lines were one for twelve.
There's that coach Weaver defense right now. And I will
peel back on that thought a little bit, because I
thought they missed a lot of open opportunities in that
first quarter and I had a chance to kind of
(15:58):
put this game, you know, away a little bit early
or maybe get some some a big lead because they
dropped a lot of key passes and missed some key
thrills on guys that were opened down the field.
Speaker 2 (16:06):
Miami iszer for one on fourth down.
Speaker 1 (16:08):
The lines converted all three of their fourth downs to
help that bad third down percentage. Miami had three hundred
and fifty six yards to Detroit's two hundred and seventy four,
so a pretty big discrepancy there. Miami had two fifty
nine through the air, ninety seven on the ground, Detroit
one to seventy and one oh four. They had sixty
three plays, we had sixty one, one turnover a piece.
We got three sacks onlines quarterbacks. They only got to
(16:30):
Zach and Quinn one time. The Zach Wilson fourth down
sack the only fourth down attempt of the day for
the Miami Dolphins. Nine penalties for sixty yards from Miami,
thirteen for eighty six for Detroit. Juice kept talking about
how pissed off Dan Campbell's going to be about that
stat and Miami had the ball for thirty minutes in
nineteen seconds, So just a bit of a discrepancy there.
In top Let's go ahead and talk about those standouts offensively,
(16:52):
so D s. Gridge I think made the football team
this week with the work in practice in this game,
and maybe it wasn't even up for discussion before that,
but I don't see how you can cut this guy
after what he's shown. Maybe you can, I don't know,
but I think he's on the football team based upon
my own evaluations, my own scouting, and.
Speaker 2 (17:07):
My podcast It's all about me on the show.
Speaker 1 (17:10):
But d I've talked about this at length before, Like
for him to come in last September and then acclimate
to the offense and play significant snaps in week three
ahead of guys that have been here for years. I
thought was instructive. So has been his summer training camp
because he's making tough catches. He's reliable and have two
A trust you you're gonna get the football, and I
(17:31):
think to a trust D s. Gridge, and I think
he blocks well down the field. He made some tough
catches that touchdown catch and run showed you the actability,
which I was a huge fan of his coming out
of college, and he showed it on that play. But
even more so catching a football off your back hip
on a really bad located throw from Zach Wilson, then
turning it up and take it in for six. That's impressive.
I thought there was a I think it was his
first catch of the game. He had three for fifty
(17:53):
three on the one drive, and I think it was
the same drive the first catch where it was a
third down. He runs this little drag route from the
backside of the formation and Zach rolls to his right.
You see him win his release and throw a little move,
and then the way he paced the route to stay
in line with Zach. There's a smart football player and
the that's hard to quantify and to properly describe exactly
how good he is at that, but to me it
(18:15):
tracks so good hands, reliable hands. Made one bad play
with a fumble, but bounce back in a big way.
And I thought McDaniel man his answer after the press
conference or his press conference after the game talking about
how the most important play to him is the one
after a mistake, and the way Dee hung in there
and bounced back was really important. I think that goes
a long way. I thought Larry Boren played well for
(18:36):
the second straight week. I thought it was more up
and down last week, but today I thought it was
pretty good. We'll watch the tape and you know, make
our corrections to get back to it next week. No,
I'm just kidding, but we will watch the tape and
do a podcast for you guys that should come out
sometime Monday morning.
Speaker 2 (18:47):
I'm thinking for that one, but less up and down
this week.
Speaker 1 (18:50):
I thought he had a great block on the big
screen to DS Gridge and had some really good pass
pro scanner recognition from that right tackle position. We'll talk
more about Larry what why anybody watching practical Jokers? That
was a good show back in the day. Daniel Brunskill.
To me, you've seen him grow into what to me
was a really rough, like first week and a half
(19:10):
two weeks in training camp to get into these games
and show more.
Speaker 2 (19:13):
And I thought today was his best day as a
Dolphins so far.
Speaker 1 (19:16):
And I think that's that's only natural for a guy
that went to a different scheme last year. But now
that he's back in a scheme that he grew up
in with the Niners, I think he's going to be
a nice interior depth piece for us. Had some nice
uproot turn and then sealed the guys in the gap
and especially in short yardage to create some lanes for guys.
He's getting some run there with you know, leam Meikenberg
and and Andrew Meyer both being down, but when they
(19:36):
get back, it looks like we have four guys that
can play center, which in the past, you know, we've
had like one guy in the past they could play center.
So that's that's a nice little boost there, Ollie Gordon.
I mean that catch and run for a first down
and third down, comes out in the third with a
little bit of a heavy step and gets skinny and
puts the football away and finishes the run. Man behind
those pads and lower the boom on some guys. That
was fun to see. And the short yarde vision and
(19:57):
ability to get lateral to the line of scrim manager
or I should parallel and get up downhill and find
the first downs. The first run in the fourth quarter
was a one yard play where he plows ahead for
six because you didn't block it very well, but he
found yards anyways. You just don't get him down with
one guy and at the point of attack. And the
next run after that was another one that has attitude
downhill and I just think that's gonna play. That's a
(20:19):
really nice change of pace what we have with you know,
Devon a Chan, Brandon Daniels. He stands out among his
group every single week the way he gets underneath guys
and gets that knockback in resets and the line scrimmage.
He had a nice surge on a successful first down
all the Gordon run late in the third quarter, and
he looks to me like one of these you know,
tackles converted to guard that looks like a pretty good player.
(20:39):
And I think he might be a guy that could
work his way into the back end of the roster
if he continues this throughout the course of training camp
next week and maybe cars out a role here in
this Dolphins offense. I thought Quinn had a really good game.
I thought the way he threw the ball was of
poise and comfort was what it looked like to me.
He played on time, which I didn't feel that was
the same way with Zach. I love the touchdown throw.
(21:00):
He had a shot to Tarik Black at the end
of the third quarter that he dropped, and the second
touchdown throw was a really nice feel with the Owiese
Junior kind of you know, being on the same page
and coming back against the grain of a defense that
had overplayed and overflowed the broken pocket and scrambled drilled there.
I don't think he knew about the clock on the
delay of game. It looked like it was a total
surprise to him. But then to bounce back on the
(21:21):
third and seven after you were third and two and
drill that shot into the gap between the two defenders
to aj Henning like it was on Heading's back shoulder.
But if you look at the location of the football
in comparison to where the Lions defenders was, he like
split them perfectly, and that's where you have to put
that ball the receivers up. The rest of it's up
to the receiver, but he put the ball right in
(21:42):
that window and that was really cool to see. The
oisee a couple of touchdowns six for eighty. Both of
those touchdowns were nice plays, especially the second one. Really
nice feel to get back against the grain there and
come back down to the football. Me and OJ were
pissed off at him on his first play because Quinn
threw a good ball and he didn't angle his route
back down to the quarterback instead of stayed on a
parallel plane. Why don't keep saying lateral on a parallel plane,
(22:04):
and it allowed the defensive back to not stay stacked
and make a play on the ball. And then there
was a catch in the late in the fourth quarter
where he went to the ground and plucked it off
the ground on probably Quinn's worst completed throw of the night.
It was off target, but he made a good catch there,
So nice day for theo Weese. I thought both Aaron
Shamplin and Mike Boone looked good. That cutback run by
Shamplin I talked about earlier. That's exactly how you drawn
(22:26):
up when you want to press play side and get
back to the cutback lane against overflow on outside zone.
So we'll see about that running back. We're and curious
about it going forward. We'll talk more about that here.
In the third segment on defense, I thought Kenneth Grant
looks He looks like a freaking start of me. What
else do you want to see from the guy? The
way he explodes into his reps and extends and locks
guys out. They are just at his mercy. It's like,
(22:48):
have any of you guys seen weapons yet. I'm not
gonna spoil it, but like the way he controls guys
is akin to what you see in that movie. I'm
not gonna go any further than that. He will do
with you what he pleases, but uh, shedding blow the
point of attack when the back arrives, retracing screens, dropping
into the hook zone, and like doing a decent job
covering the stick route as a three hundred and thirty
five pound man.
Speaker 2 (23:08):
I saw enough of him. He's the real deal, and
he's been awesome.
Speaker 1 (23:10):
He's gonna be an absolute problem, especially especially next to
Zach Sealer. I think Zach would tell you he's a
more talented player. Zach is just better, just is elite
at every other thing in terms of the game. But
I think kind of raw ability probably is better than
Zach Seelers, Willy Gay that screen loss man man coverage,
(23:31):
read the back, don't get too far extended, don't let
him get back inside of you. Just stay on him,
gets downhill, diagnoses it and goes before the ball comes
out and makes the play. He also had a really
nice tackle, and this was something that always drove me
crazy about Jerome Baker. I love Bake, great dude, good player,
but he would always get into those hook drops and
then just whiff. He would overrun the tackle after they
(23:53):
made that five yard you know, harmless catch. And it
would turn into a twelve yard play, which is a
harmful play. But the way Willy Gay squared that up
and hit him and locked him back short of the sticks,
and how the hell did you give him a first
down there? He was a half yard at best short
of the first down and they gave him the first down.
But I don't carry about that because process was great
and it shows you how good will he Gay is playing.
Cam Good to me, made this football team today. And
(24:13):
that's just Travis Wingfield talking on Travis Wingfold's podcast about
Travis Wingfold's preseason Travis Wingfield thoughts, I thought that his
tackle on the first special teams play, beating a block
and then making the stop. He had a nice condense
and attack play where you squeeze the edge and then
the full back comes across the formation to kick him
out in the running game, and he went and got
that and knocked him back and created a play for
(24:34):
the edge with Ethan Bonner and Dante Trader Junior. He
gets the sack in the third quarter beating the kickout
tight end. He had one arm pinned inside and still
got the quarterback by straining. I thought Cam Good really
showed well today he showed good. I should say Dante
Trader had that really nice week side seagap Rashad Jones,
feel it and go get it play against the run.
I thought he lost contained on the big run that
got called back on the holding call on the cam.
(24:56):
Good play I referenced earlier. So up and down for
a Trader, But I think there's something there with him
as well. I believe that kJ Britt looks like a
better version of a Land than Roberts. Excuse me, we're
all the same recording here, so we're gonna keep rolling.
It looked like the tape in Tampa. There's no false steps,
it's instincts. It's downhill, chop those feet, read it and go,
(25:16):
and he runs downhill and runs through you like a
freaking bulldozer. He's rock solid, he's smart. He's a big
hitter in alpha type. I love our linebacker room, probably
more than name of the room on the football team,
and maybe more than linebacker rooms across the league. I
think it's five, four or five deep right now. If
you talk about him, Willie Gaye, Jordan Brooks, Tyrrell Dotson,
and Eugenis Sante, who is also in my standouts list
(25:37):
here because I love his energy and speed. Those kickoffs
are fun to watch because of Eugena Sante getting his
butt down there. He flies down there and he whiffs
because it's impossible to, you know, tackle a cheetah when
you're a Ferrari driving one hundred and twenty miles now
down the turnpike there. But the way he hits on
defense too, he comes with a trigger and he runs
through guys man. Excellent fit on that wide stretch run
(25:59):
where he won the race corner and squares up the
big tackle.
Speaker 2 (26:02):
He was flying all over the field.
Speaker 1 (26:03):
Eugenis Sante gotta find a way to keep this guy,
if on the practice squad, if not on the roster,
on the practice squad, because he is a player. Grayson Murphy,
I thought, big bounce back from a game that everyone
loved last week, but I thought showed some flaws in
his game. But I thought that inside swim move to
compliment his get off and speed around the edge.
Speaker 2 (26:20):
That's what he needs to be.
Speaker 1 (26:21):
He can pass rush two posts that way inside outside
post two way go. He also nearly gets in on
a third down, hitting the ball back behind the last
garage and gets the incomplete, too so great game from
Grayson Murphy Derek McClendon. He sets up that sack for
Jordan Phillips by setting the edge and forcing the hookbacker
back inside to or the sorry hooker to force back
inside to the jaws of Phillips, who I thought also
(26:42):
had a big game that he took guys several yards
for rides into the backfield. But you know he's He's
a nondescript fifth round player, right. I don't understand how
you can watch this guy and not see a really
good player.
Speaker 2 (26:52):
And then Zeke Biggers he is strong. Look at these
these man.
Speaker 1 (26:56):
It's early on these guys, but the way Phillips is
playing and making me question how the hell these guys
made to the fifth and seventh round of the draft
this year. They're too good for that. His length and extension.
He plays a little bit high at times, but man,
his skill to push and pull guys and toss him around.
I'm curious to see how he plays against the ones,
because past the test so far has been passed. He
is throwing around the twos and threes. He forced that
(27:17):
hole and the Lions drive the end of the third
quarter where he took the guard off of his feet
and the only recovery he possibly had was to pull
Zeke to the ground. Like That's impressive, and so is
Alex Huntley. When you watch this defensive line, you can
just see Coach Clark's impact across the board. I mean,
how many guys make it into the notes every week.
It's all of them pretty much. He was getting off
the football, winning the punch and taking it two guys
(27:38):
on the third and one the lines illegal shifted on
he destroyed his man on that play. I thought Jordan
Colbert had a good game covering kicks on special teams.
Had a really nice split of the jammers on a
punt on one punt return where he made a nice
tackle on a third and twelfth the end of the
third quarter as well.
Speaker 2 (27:51):
Good game for him.
Speaker 1 (27:52):
I thought Cam Smith had his best game as a Dolphins,
which sounds crazy, but it was the same stuff I
saw in practices, where he was being physical and enjoying
himself there, which I don't think I've seen from him before.
That textbook coverage wrapped to break up a pass in
the fourth quarter, Then the rep where he felt the
receiver coming across on a little flat route and re
routed him and took away the passing lane and then
got off that and went and tackled the quarterback and
(28:13):
got up and celebrated it. That's what I got to
see from you. Cam Smith, keep it going, Ethan Robinson.
I mean, one play, but it won the game. So
how great was that playing to pick off that pass
at the end. And Jake Bailey, I thought he kicked
the ball well. Two punts of fifty yards plus no
returns on either of those, including a fifty nine yarder
in that third quarter last break right there, we'll do
the guys that are looking forward to next week next
and the five takeaways from this game. That's all next
(28:35):
Draft Time Podcast, brought to you by Autoonation. We do
standouts and stand downs, but I hate that name, so
we're gonna call it guys. We're looking forward to week
three here and a chance to bounce back next week.
I'll start with Zach Wilson. I don't think it's worth
belaboring here. Just a little bit too late, a little
bit too often, like Taj almost got murdered on that
(28:56):
one ball that he threw to him. The deep shot
was wide open, which it wasn't underthrown. I mean it was,
but it was underthrown because he was just way too late.
You gotta like he double hitched into that thing. You
gotta step up and rip the football man if youre
gonna play at this level. Every time he was hot,
I felt he didn't do a good job seeing it.
More guys rushing than you have to block, you cannot
get to your second hitch because if they have more
than you can block, that means they have less than
you can then they can cover something or or something
(29:19):
I did. It takes two to tangle, but secondary reads
like you just can't get to that kind of stuff.
Even the completion that Tanner Connor on the first drive
for a nice catch and run.
Speaker 2 (29:27):
Like get it to him, oh now, and don't lob it.
Speaker 1 (29:29):
Throw it quick throw now, there was one there before
the sack turnover. On downs, he had aj Henning open
on the back corner of the end zone on a
beautiful design that he missed.
Speaker 2 (29:39):
So there were some good stuff in there. There has been.
Speaker 1 (29:41):
But he's got to play on time better because that's
how this offense operates. And then Jalen Wright, you just
can't fumble the football man. Non starter and it's gonna
dip into your REP count if you keep doing that.
Jonas and vit Naya, I thought, I don't want to
put him in here. Actually, I'll probably talk about him
as a guy that kind of showed some growth, but
there's just been some plays and I think in pass
protection where he hasn't been seeing it as well, And
I don't think it's an indicator of what's gonna happen
(30:02):
going forward, but I just think it's worth noting.
Speaker 2 (30:04):
I'll have a better read on his game tomorrow.
Speaker 1 (30:05):
When I watched the film Keon Smith, I thought started
off really good, but then the feat just go down
on these redirect pass rush moves and he keeps losing
on these pass rush games up front from the defensive front,
and it cost us with big sacks and turnovers. There
was a fumble last week. It was a fourth down
failure this week. Gotta clean that up. Farah Brown I
thought had a rough day as an in line blocker.
Eric Azukamway talked about the illegal formation penalty. Get lined up,
(30:28):
that's all there is to it. Tarik Black, same thing
and catch the football too, bang bang play like that
was a good play by the defender. But he was
juggling that ball before it even got there. And then
Hayden Rouchie there was a bad hold. He did have
a one nice block in the running game, but there
was also that on the hold like he was head
down and really really bad technique on that play. So
I thought that was a rough look. Defensively, Cornell Armstrong
(30:49):
I thought was late to react to so much stuff,
no quick twitch, the run support was lacking. I think
he's been the backup slot. You kind of saw it
today for Mike Hilton, who, by the way, Mike Hilton
one dB who didn't dress, who could have seen that coming.
He's sorry nickelback big surprise. But Cornell Armstrong I thought
really had a rough day. Jason Marshall I thought was
late to see stuff and zone Jack Jones had a
really good reroute on Isaac Teslaw route on fourth down
(31:11):
that they converted, but Marshall was late to come over
and pick up the pass off. He also had a
totally unnecessary block in the back on the big s
Gridge return, Ethan and Bonno are getting hurt puts him
in this part of it. But he also was kind
of not good in coverage today. But I hope he's okay,
because I think he's gonna be needed this year. And
then Shang Tendall, I just don't know how you missed
that sack. He had it cleared up and there was
down the elevator chaft like there wasn't room for him
(31:31):
to escape. There's some flashes there. What the inconsistencies are, well,
they're too consistent. The five takeaways, I think the receiver
room depth actually have more than five here, if you
guys are cool with it. The wide receiver room depth
continues to come into focus. I just think de and
Tage are they I have a hard time cutting either
of those players. I think they're both impact players. And
your football team. Number two is that all of a sudden,
(31:53):
the running back depth doesn't look the same because you
lose Alex Madison last week and then Jalen Wright continues
to kind of struggle hearing training camp. And we'll see
if that comes to fruition in the season. But I
think Alli Gordan's pushing for the number two. But I
just don't feel like I did at this time last
week before the game on Sunday about that running back
depth in that room. Number three probably time to start looking,
(32:15):
you know, for cornerback help right, especially with Ethan Bonnard down.
If it's long term or not, I think you just
need more there. You know, Storm had a bust in
coverage for a touchdown there that was on him. It's
a banjo call, first in, first out, like that's he
was in the wrong coverage there. Cornell Armstrong had a
really rough game. Ethan Bonner I thought got beat and
got hurt. I just think it's probably gonna have to
(32:36):
look elsewhere for that to make it better. Number four,
I feel great about the defensive tackle position. Zach Stealler,
Zach Sealer, Kenneth Grant did everything in a few series.
Phillips and Viggers looked like draft hits to me. And
that's before you get to Matthew Dickerson, a butler who
can both play and again that Coach Clark influence man,
the technique, the explosion to extension, locking guys out. I
feel awesome about that. I feel pretty good about the
(32:58):
potential swing tackle that takeaway. Number five looks like it
could be Larry Boram at this point just because of
how he's played. I think they've given ke On Smith
some chances there and They've brought some guys in like
Jermaina Fetti and now Yadnika Juice will get their work
at it. But I think Larry Boram has solidified his
hierarchy in that room as the guy that's filling in
for Austin Jackson. Right now, nothing decided just yet, but
I want to tip the cap to him because I
(33:18):
think that he's doing a good job in that third
tackle position, and Keon Smith has kind of helped that
as well by how he's played in the wrong direction.
Number six backup quarterback play was better, but I think
that two versus three battle, which is not really a battle,
seems closer than I thought it was before. Number seven
special teams wasn't good enough. We talked about that earlier.
I don't think you can fault Craig Ackerman for fumbles
(33:39):
and you know, muff punts, but there was some penalties
and some things out there too that Warren's good as
last week. And we'll go ahead and call right there
seven takeaways for you guys this week and call it
a podcast.
Speaker 2 (33:47):
We're gonna come.
Speaker 1 (33:47):
Back tomorrow or sorry, Monday and review the film of
