Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is Drivetime with Travis wing Feast.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
What is up Dolphins and welcome to the Draft Time Podcast.
I am your host, Travis Wingfield. And on today's episode,
don't just feel good? Don't it just feel good to
beat the New York Jets? You know what time it.
Speaker 1 (00:24):
Wanks win win win, win, win. Yeah, everything goes win
win win win.
Speaker 2 (00:31):
Oh, I got more, win the whole thing. Let's not
get too crazy here. It is one win, but we
are gonna milk it for a little bit here. The
Dolphins are twenty seven to twenty one winners over the
New York Jets. Will go over everything from the game,
(00:52):
including the biggest stories, the pregame checklist, the themes, general
takeaway standouts, thoughts, and everything from this Dolphins win. But
it was not as close as that twenty seven twenty
win score indicated with a late Jets touchdown. We'll get
into all of that from the Baptist Hell Studios inside
the Baptist Health Training Complex. This is the Drive Time Podcast,
maybe Gaffe. It is twelve twenty five in the morning
(01:15):
on Tuesday. We just finished postgame Radio with Jermon bush Rod.
Another great episode with us there. He and I are
finding our groove together. So if you haven't checked that out,
do that as soon as possible. Please, let's go ahead
and talk about this game, because I mean, I'm getting
a little bit annoyed by the script of these games,
not just for the Miami Dolphins. It is more of
a Dolphins thing, but across the National Football League, with
(01:38):
how few possessions there are, Like, there's not as many yards,
there's not as many points, and I like a twenty
six to twenty one game, don't get me wrong, but man,
three possessions in the first half for either side, it's
hard to find your offensive rhythm and continuity and put
up points when that happens. Now, there was some bad
football in this game, most of it by the New
York Jets, but the Dolphins had their fair share of
(01:58):
bad football as well. I thought Miami's takeaway set the
entire stage. They get three takeaways against the New York Jets,
a potential for a fourth. They lose that challenge on
a kickoff that looked to me like it was pretty
obviously out, but the referees disagreed. The Dolphins don't get
their quarterback sacked a single time, and that's the difference
in the game. The Jets commit more penalties, they commit
more turnovers, three nothing, and they get their quarterback sacked
(02:19):
twice and you had zero sacks to your quarterback. You're
not gonna lose many football games when that happens. The
big story of the day the inclusion of Darren Waller
in the Dolphins offense. I mean, if we look back
at Buffalo and New England, are those winnable games if
you have that element of your offense, like I maybe
those Dolphins two drives that stalled out against the Patriots,
you know, on the doorstep of victory, maybe those maybe,
(02:41):
maybe those are Darren Waller plays for wins for you know,
a three to one record with three wins in division.
I'm getting pie in the sky here, I understand that.
But what a big inclusion he was in the offense.
And we're gonna talk about exactly how that happened. But
Darren Waller three catches, two for touchdowns, one on a
third down on that first drive that would later lead
to his first touchdown as a Miami Dolphin, and the
on side kick recovery.
Speaker 1 (03:03):
Hard to have a better debut than that.
Speaker 2 (03:05):
The second half began with another takeaway and I thought
Dante Trader fighting his butt off for that football at
the bob of the pile was a critical part of
this game. We had a Tyreek Hill getting injured on
the very next third down, a critical third down conversion
for the Miami Dolphins, but we score on the next
two drives. The Dolphins distribute the ball across the entire offense.
All in all, it was a spirited performance. I think
(03:26):
there was a lot to like. I thought Tyreek in
the pregame kind of hype up video I saw on
ESPN of him going around pushing guys in the huddle
and getting guys pumped up. The quarterback, I thought played
his best game of the year. The offense spread it around,
the defense found their takeaways three compared to zero in
the first three games. But I do kind of wonder
if the biggest takeaway from this game is not just
(03:46):
the fact that the Jets are really bad. I mean
three fumbles. I wrote down ten for eighty six to
start the fourth quarter. They finished with thirteen for one
h eight in penalties. I think I have that number right.
But they were down fourteen at the end to the
third quarter and a first down in the red zone
and they go offensive pass interference, then personal foul, just
(04:06):
dreadful football. It put them behind the chains. They couldn't
overcome it. They kick another long field goal, and quite frankly,
if the ghost of Nick Folks not kicking fifty eight
yard field goals, this game is never closed. So the Jets,
I think, have a long way to go. If there's
one thing Travis is always right about, it's at the
Jets stink, and they did in this one.
Speaker 1 (04:25):
I wish we had finished a little bit better.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
You know, the four minute offense with the von eh
Chan was not what I expected to see. But also,
you know, they go up two touchdowns and you had
two drives to make it a three score game, and
you went three and out on both those drives, pump
punt back to back on those. They did kick a
field goal on the third drive though, So that's like
the initial storylines of the game. Let's go over my
pregame checklist, which was this, I wanted to see violence
(04:49):
by the defense, right and you didn't get that. That
was a big X on the checklist This week. They
came out and punched you in the mouth. And in fact,
if Jack Jones does not put a peanut punch on
a football on Bresee Hall.
Speaker 1 (05:00):
Who's gonna score on that play?
Speaker 2 (05:01):
If he just puts the ball away, He's gonna land
in the beautiful pitch blue paint in the end zone
there at hard Rock Stadium for an early demoralizing twelve
play drive. Because they ran that drive twelve plays. Eleven
of those were runs, and they punched you in the mouth.
It was runs of six, nine, six, five, five, fifteen,
nineteen four to four and two, which was the fumble
going into the end zone, and the defensive line got
(05:23):
pushed around all night. Not all night, but most of
the first half. Once again, a big X on that one.
The next thing I wanted to see was Darren Waller's
inclusion into the offense. What does it look like? What
does it change? Do you use him in bunches and
stacks to get better releases? Sure enough they did, because
his first two catches of the game a third down
conversion on third and five for fourteen yards and a
touchdown on fourth down in the back of the end zone.
(05:45):
What do they do on both those plays? They motioned
Darren Waller into stacks, into bunches. He gets off the
release gets easy access over the middle of the field
and makes a big play for you on a critical
fourth down that touchdown as well. Pretty impactful first half
and game for Darren Waller and im to talk about
what he can possibly do for the offense, not just
in this game, but now in the absence of Tyreek Hill,
(06:06):
who Mike McDaniel confirmed after the game had a dislocated knee,
which you don't usually get dislocations without.
Speaker 1 (06:13):
More than that, we'll.
Speaker 2 (06:14):
Get more on that technical information for you guys tomorrow,
but you're gonna be without Tyreek Hill most likely, right.
I mean, that's there's no real ifs, hands and buzz
about that. So there is a possibility for this Dolphins
offense to pivot off of this, and I'm curious to
see if they do that. More on that in just
one second. So a big check mark on that one
for two. The balance in the run game. We saw
Alli go off on last Thursday. We saw Jalen Wright
(06:38):
is back active, but we saw the touches go to
a Chan and Ali Gordon. No touches for Jalen Wright
and Olie Gordon was in on the first drive, the
second drive as well as kind of a spell back
there to devon eight chan, so it feels like you're
kind of getting a look at what this run game
is gonna be with plenty of manufactured touches from a league.
Washington had that big end around with guys in space,
Pat Paul and Aaron Brewer hitting brought blocks out there.
(07:00):
Then they go back to Ali for some change of
pace down the middle. We kept seeing Elik at work
as a ball carrier two rushes for eight yards in
the first half, also caught two screens for thirteen yards.
This run game diversity has to be one of the
more intriguing things to follow throughout the first four games.
And now I wrote that down before Tyreek Hill got injured.
I think goes up another stratsphere in terms of the
(07:20):
level of importance there and how this run game can
be diverse. And the play action game you got off
of that where two a Tongue Ofailoa had the fourth
highest EPA of the week and it was fewer shifts
and motions of the last scrimmage and more play action.
I like that play a whole lot, So a big
check mark there for that one. And then my fourth
one was the only the last one I had here.
Could we get vertical and eat up yak This defense
(07:40):
was not built to stop this offense. They don't tackle well,
they bust coverage in the backside, they don't defend outside
zone very well. Can we look like the old Dolphins?
And in a lot of ways, I felt you did.
We talked all week about this, right in the pregame coverage,
in the preview coverage, with the ability to get the
Jets to walk up in their man coverage on third
downs and run Tyreek and waddle by a bunch of
(08:01):
cornerbacks who are not very good outside of Sauce Gardner.
Speaker 1 (08:04):
And that's what happened.
Speaker 2 (08:05):
A rub route that got a natural pick that caught
Wattle free in space and Tua puts it right on
him for a big third and ten conversion. We saw
Tyreek catching balls over the middle of the field and
running around this defense like crazy twenty eight yard catch
and run on one point on a nice little boot
action from Tua. We saw the outside zone game get
cranking late in the game. Ah had some big runs
outside in particularly a nine yard touchdown run in the
(08:26):
third quarter that put the Dolphins at head by two touchdowns.
So I would say a big check mark here. It
wasn't as flashy and as exciting as it has been
in the past, but it was effective and I thought
that was a good thing to see in this game.
My themes for this game, the takeaway came back. There's
no analysis for this. Three for one in the check mark,
three for four in the check marks, by the way,
but you got three fumble recoveries in the first thirty
(08:47):
minutes and ten seconds of the game. The Jacksonville Jaguars
have been turning teams over and they are three to
one because of that. Really, sometimes it's that simple, and
it's nice to get some fumble luck. I wish we
had maybe given one of those fumbles in the pay
game to get a win there, or maybe the Bills
game to get a win there.
Speaker 1 (09:03):
But we'll take him as we get him.
Speaker 2 (09:04):
Hopefully there's more to come of those, because it's easy
to win football games when you take away possessions from
the opposing offense and you put your offense in position
to score off of those takeaways. Number two Dolphins exploiting space.
We talked about this all week in the preview coverage
on tape. There was all kinds of soft spots in
this jet zone coverage, miscommunications, guys running free, and that
was the case in the first quarter. If you give
(09:26):
Tyreek Hill access to a release in the as a
number two receiver to the field side, the wide side
of the field, he's the second receiver into the formation,
and you give him free release and free access to
the hook zone, and you don't ever put a guy
on him. That seems bad, and Miami exploited that. Did
the exact same thing with Darren Waller. There was some
shot plays in this game down the field where they
(09:47):
took advantage of the space there. So the Dolphins did
a good job creating and exploiting space in the passing
game against this Jets back seven. The first down success
rate continues to struggle for the offense and it caused
more true drop back situations that they were able to
clean up later on in the game. But Tua consistently
in third and eight and third and ten, he's making
plays and creating and he's giving you a better version
(10:10):
of the quarterback that we saw in the first couple
of games of the season. But like, that's not a
recipe for success long term. So can you find a
way to get more first down success, and to me,
that looks like more in the passing game, more play
action game. The boot legs they were beautiful tonight. Run them,
cross them over. Layer these guys, you know funnel flood
flood concepts. Bring your high low you know, your high
(10:31):
low concept over to that side of the formation with
two and he can go to work. That's what the
the Darren Waller second touchdown, Julian Hill on the flat,
Darren Waller to the back pylon, Tua against his body,
makes a perfect throw. They were wide open. They bust
the coverage. Give me more of that, give me some
more Ollie Gordon Downhill runs and see how they can
continue to find their way to get more success on
first downs, which will create more chances on second and
third downs for the offense. It struggled tonight. It needs
(10:53):
to get on track. Brandon Stevens, I wrote this down.
Nothing came of it, but he really cheated inside on
that third down pass breakup that all of you guys
told me was defensive pass interference.
Speaker 1 (11:02):
I believe you.
Speaker 2 (11:03):
I did not see the replay on that, but I
do believe that was an opportunity for Miami to run
like a stutter go at some point as I stuttered
for the word as I get on a roll here
it's twelve thirty five in the morning.
Speaker 1 (11:13):
But it never happened.
Speaker 2 (11:14):
I thought they were the Jets in those band cover
looks will cheat to the leverage they think they need,
and Miami could have exploited it. Never came back to it.
The Jets first drive. This this is going to go
back to the negative stuff here. The Jets first drive
was eleven runs, one pass, and they got it going
on the second drive. They ran it a few times
in a two minute drill. And it's funny because you
go to Jets Twitter and they're mad at Aaron Glenn
(11:34):
for running the ball in two minute drill, for running
the ball on third or medium. But that's what I
would have done because Miami had no teeth to stop it.
And we go to the locker room, you know, up
ten three. It felt like that was too close of
a score for how that game played out. And it
began on the the Dolphins defensive line. They had it
third and five to start the second half, and they
run it and sets up a fourth and one, and
(11:55):
that leads to the Justin Fields forty three yard touchdown
where you had bad gap discipline, you sold out on
the front side.
Speaker 1 (12:01):
I liked that, but you got to have a hat.
Speaker 2 (12:03):
Per gap and they didn't, and it created a long
run for a quarterback that has punished you in the
two games he has played against you as the quarterback
of this offense. So you've got to find a way
to fix this. Because as much fun as it was
to beat the stinkin Jets, and they played bad football,
and the Dolphins pretty well handled him in this game
for the most part, that's not going to play against
the Chargers in two weeks. Might work against the Panthers
(12:23):
next week, but you better stop the run in Omarion
Hampton and quin Shawn Judkins and b John Robinson coming
up here and Derrick Henry like in James Cook. The
load of running backs coming down the straight the pike
here is significant. You better strap your freaking buckle, your
chin strap, and get ready because this run defense has
been embarrassing and it has to get better. The last
part here, the second half offense after the Reek injury
(12:46):
and in particular the running game. Look, I think Miami
is gonna have to make a pretty significant pivot here
without Tyreek Hill.
Speaker 1 (12:53):
I mean he was. He was who the offense went through.
Speaker 2 (12:57):
And the first and second and third progression of every
single play, every single thing you designed for this offense
was around Tyreek Hill. And we've talked about that with
Kyle Krabs, we've talked about on the show by ourselves.
Maybe there's a silver lining here that you can be
now forced to pivot away from that style of approach.
And the Dolphins run game after Tyreek got hurt was
this eight Chan for ten, eight chan for four that
(13:18):
led to a nine yard play action bootleg touchdown to
Darren Waller, so it makes it seventeen to ten. After
a Jets touchdown, comes back the other way Ollie Gordon
for four devon a. Chan's next run was a nine
yard touchdown. We also had two on a boot leg
to Waddle for sixteen yards in that drive. Eight chan
for two, eight chan for nine, h chan for minus three,
h chan for thirteen, eight chan for twenty two.
Speaker 1 (13:37):
So it got cranking.
Speaker 2 (13:38):
We'll come back and talk about what that might look
like here in the second half of the or the
I guess the next portion of the season in a
post Tyreek Hill world. We'll talk about that on the
other side of the podcast. Here, Draft Time Podcast, brought
to you by Auto Nation. Right, we're back here early
(13:59):
on Tuesday morning, we're late on Monday night, depending on
how you classify this. Let's talk about some Dolphins and
Jets stats from the dolphins twenty seven to twenty one
win over the New York Stiage. The stage did have
twenty three first downs to our nineteen, doing large part
to four for twelve on third downs from Miami off
of ten for fifteen last week, the Jets were four
of nine. The Dolphins converted their only fourth down play,
(14:22):
the touchdown to Waller. The Jets were one for two
on their fourth down plays, and New York out gains
Miami four hundred and four to three hundred yards. But
that is always kind of a weird discrepancy, especially when
they get what seventy yards on that last drive and
Miami had three shorter fields because of the Jets fumbles. Well,
I should say two because the one was a ninety
six play ninety six yard drive off the first Jets
fumble but made by Jack Jones two oh seven to
(14:45):
one seventy seven. Jets have them have more passing yards,
they outrushed Miami one ninety seven to one twenty three.
They three turnovers, though none for Miami, two sacks of
the Jets quarterback none for Miami, and thirteen penalties for
bucko one and six penalties for forty yards for the
Miami Dolphins. Top was just about even. Dolphins head for
thirty minutes and forty eight seconds in this game. Let's
(15:05):
talk about the critical moments of the game and break
them down, the biggest plays and how they happened. So
the Jets have a third and five at the plus
fifteen on the opening drive of the game, and they
run it right down the middle for a first down,
and they move the sticks.
Speaker 1 (15:18):
That's the theme of the entire drive.
Speaker 2 (15:20):
And they knew they could do it because they knew
if they got three or four yards they could saddle
up on fourth down and run the football for a
first down. And you know, our backers couldn't fit the run.
And it's hard to blame them because when you have
no you know, definitive way go off of a two
way go opportunity, because your defensive line keeps getting pushed
into your lap and gett knocked on the ground and
(15:41):
allows those first and second. You know, combination blockers to
climb into that second level, you're not going to make
any plays. And so I think it's made tough on
both Tyrel Dots and as well as Jordan Brooks to
make plays behind a defensive line that keeps getting pushed back.
So the Jets one big win there in that category.
Let's go ahead and track these Dolphins and Jets. Third
and ten, the plus forty six starting the second quarter,
(16:02):
and the Dolphins Tua had dropped the snap the play
before and Waddle wins off of line scrimmage with a
wicked release wide open two.
Speaker 1 (16:08):
It hits him.
Speaker 2 (16:09):
It was a nice man beater on a natural rub
down the field on that wheel route. So that is
a explosive play to get Miami back into this game
after a long Jets drive there. And it was going
to be a third down play on the second drive,
as the Dolphins have one win there too, but they
went forward on fourth down, so the third down play
got batted back into his face and fourth down they
went for it. And I like the aggressiveness I always do.
(16:31):
And it's a ten minutes left in the second quarter,
fourth and goal with the four yard line, Dolphins lead
the game three to nothing. They go tight trips. I
love this formation with Waller in it, where you motion
him into those stacks. You mess with the communication of
the defense. With him in that group, you can't get
hands on him. It makes it tough. And Tua throws
an outstanding ball in the back of the end zone.
Remember front five yards of the end zone. Put it low,
(16:52):
put your guy in the ground, protect him so he
can't get hit in that spot. Hanging onto the football
back five yards of the end zone. If you come
out to practice, the end zone has a line down
the middle of it, five yards front, five yards back.
If you're behind that red line in the back of
the end zone, in the middle of the end zone,
put that thing up on the crossbar. Let your tall
player go get it. That's exactly what he did. The
play looked dead, but he puts it up on that
crossbar and Darren Waller pulls it down like a rebound,
(17:14):
a touchdown that reminded me a lot of the twenty
two touchdown to Kasiki and Baltimore. Dolphins get their second
critical win and lead the category two to one. Fourth
and five plus thirty six yard line for the Jets,
there was four to twenty three to play in the half,
and there's a ten tozhing game, and you get a
sack fumble, not just a stop on fourth down, but
a sack fumble. Tyrel Dotson comes on the blitz Jalen
(17:35):
Phillips on the recovery. How do they do it? They
showed four, they only brought three. And then you green
dog Tyrel Dotson, who has the running back, is in
pass protection. But Tyrel Dotson's going to convert to a
rusher because he stayed in that pass protection and fanned out,
and Dotson got an inside run on his green dog
blitz and it allowed him to not be accounted for
in the protection scheme. He runs free and on justin
(17:57):
fields and doesn't miss. And Jalen Phillips did a great
job on that play of denting the edge to create
that run for Tyrel dots and then he finishes the
play by following it up and gets the fumble recovery.
So the Dolphins win that one three to one. In
our critical moments, the next one is a third and
seven at the minus forty yard line with twenty three
seconds to go in the half, ten to nothing game,
and fields converts to Wilson. The Dolphins have just been
(18:18):
so soft in those hook zones over the football, and
I mean on top of the running game, and this
is part of it too, probably, but I would like
to see us play a little bit tighter in those
hook zones in coverage.
Speaker 1 (18:28):
And it was a pretty easy conversion, which the Jets.
Speaker 2 (18:30):
Got a few of those in this game, and the
opponents have gotten a few of those all year long.
So it's three two Dolphins in the critical categories, which
is probably why you lead the game ten three at halftime.
Five seconds to play at the end of the half,
the Jets have it at the plus forty yard line
and they have a time out. It's a tricky situation
here for the offense. I could not believe they did
not snap that thing to justin fields with no defensive
lineman within the A or B gaps on the Jets
(18:53):
offensive line. Quarterback drawed that thing and run it for
eight yards or for four yards and get.
Speaker 1 (18:59):
Down and call their time out.
Speaker 2 (19:00):
They try a quick pass at Garrett Wilson, who gets
no separation and almost tips it up into an interception.
They did kick the fifty eight yard field goal, so
good for them, but Miami won that play to end
the half to take a four to two lead there
into the locker room. Third and eight at the plus
thirty four started the second half, and this was right
after the Dolphins got a fumble back from the Jets
return game and Tua hits Tyreek for fourteen yards. Tyreek
(19:21):
was hurt on the play. You saw the entire Dolphins
team come over to him on the sideline and Tyreek
was kind of like maniacally laughing and saying like yes
on the like on the cart, which was like, dude,
are you just like going through it right now? And
he said after the game or tront Arms had had
FaceTime Tyreek, who said that he was trying to like
do that to keep from passing out after the play happened.
Speaker 1 (19:41):
So Tyreek went to.
Speaker 2 (19:42):
The hospital after the game for that leg and for
that dislocated knee, and then we wish him the best,
but he goes out on that particular play, a fourteen
yard gain from Tua tureek a third and eight, a
critical play, but he, you know, he was in good
spirits and the Dolphins came over to say, you know,
we'll get you on this one for their teammate there,
so the Dolphins get a big momentum swing there. I
(20:04):
thought it was a chance for the Jets to get
the momentum back in their favor after giving it to
Miami on the fumble, and the Dolphins get it back
with a big third and eight conversion and eventually go
score on that drive. So they take a five to
two lead in our critical stats category. The fourth and
one with nine forty to play in the third quarters
of Justin fields forty three yard touchdown run, and they
had that strung out on the front side, but the
(20:25):
backside just didn't have their contain. They fall on Zach
Sealer and put him on the ground, which is he's
been in that position a lot this year. Then Jordan
Brooks loses backside contained and then Justin Fields just gets
into space and it was Curtains from there. It got
him back in the game there for a minute, and
they win their third critical moment of the game to
go down three to five in this category. And then
the last one I have here is a third and eight,
(20:46):
seven minutes into the third quarter plus forty yard line
two has a six yard scramble and they tack on
fifteen yards and Miamis had been faring quite well on
this category in terms of these third medium's third longs.
Speaker 1 (20:57):
And the Jets.
Speaker 2 (20:57):
You know, I thought two was ability to create in
this game was a bigger story than it has been
for you know a lot of these games this year.
And he did it well in this particular moment. Got
down and you can't go hunting for quarterbacks heads, dude,
I don't know what you're thinking. So the Dolphins win
the critical moments six to three in this one. I
tracked all the third downs on that Jets driving the
fourth quarter when it was twenty four to thirteen, because
every stop was like calling game, and they eventually got
(21:19):
it on third and fifteen Tyrel dots and made a
big play. So actually it was seven to three Dolphins
in critical moments and Tyrel dots and played his best
game of the year. Some additional thoughts here, I was
doing pregame radio in our radio four out of the
South Plaza, and they got me a customized jersey, a
Rivalry jersey, and there they're so cool.
Speaker 1 (21:37):
They look really good.
Speaker 2 (21:38):
I haven't owned a jersey since they bought a Jarvis
Landry jersey back in twenty fourteen. It kind of goes
against my old guy code. I've graduated to T shirts
and golf polos, but I got to say I'm a
huge fan of these jerseys in the pitch, blue end zones.
I know you all know what I'm talking about when
I say it reminds me of the Lamar Smith touchdown
run against the Colts once upon time, the overtime winner
in the playoffs last time we had the blue end zones.
(21:59):
So that was something I really enjoyed throughout the course
of this game. The new uniforms and the colors. I
think Cole Strange could be something I want to watch
the tape first, but I thought he was the best
guard performance we've gotten this entire season and could be
a nice piece for you even maybe depth when James
Daniels comes back, And I would say Larry Borham has
proven to be a pretty good swing tackle too. Hopefully
JD and AJ both do come back, you know, relatively soon,
(22:21):
and that would give you a pretty good swing interior
guy and a pretty good swing tackle.
Speaker 1 (22:24):
So I feel pretty good about that.
Speaker 2 (22:26):
Something else I want to point out here is again
the defense kind of got run in this game for
large portions of it and a friend of the podcast,
former Finalysis podcast co host My first ever podcast co host,
Kevin deurn is kind of a defensive savant. He was
talking about how some of these structures just haven't really
made sense to him this year. He thinks that Anthony
Weaver has called kind of a five to zero one
or a six to zho one course, right like your
(22:47):
PhD level courses, and the players are kind of playing
at one on one. I thought that was really a
depthly put by Kevin, and we'll get more into that
in the film podcast tomorrow. I just positively loved the
close out drive to put him asleep. With the running game,
they're a little boot action of Julian Hill for a
big game. Just nice, nice closer all the way around.
Even though the Jets made it close and had a
chance to onsite kick it and get back in the game,
(23:08):
but it felt like Miami kind of closed it out
at that moment. Let's take our last break right there.
Come back to the standouts, the stand downs, the five takeaways,
all that next Drive Time Podcast brought to you by AutoNation.
Speaker 1 (23:21):
The Jets killed Carl. Yeah, they probably did kill Carl.
Speaker 2 (23:24):
They probably killed a lot of people with how they've
played football over the last yeah, forty years.
Speaker 1 (23:29):
You know, could be worse. You could be a Jets fan.
Speaker 2 (23:32):
Let's talk about the standouts offensively for the Miami Dolphins.
Tyreek Hill was playing in passion. I thought he looked fast,
caught it clean, created after the fact, getting into the
sticks on those tatic throws coming back to the quarterback.
He of course leaves the game with an injury, and
it looks like we're gonna be without Tyreek Hill for
quite some time. I thought Cole Strange did some really
nice stuff. The giz with the Dolphins offensive system focused
him a few times and he had some real displacement
(23:53):
in the running game. I thought two have played really
well the third down conversion's fourth down conversion, playing on
the move, not getting stuck in his footwork, and his drops.
That third nine ball he threw on the move that
was broken up was really nice. We'll talk more about
two here in just one second. Darren Waller, I mean,
you can just see it formationally. Some of the stuff
they can do with him that they couldn't do with
other players. So I'm excited about what he can do
(24:15):
in this offense and how it can kind of unlock
hopefully a different feature of the offense. Tavon a Chan
That run after the Tyreek injury was really nice job
stretching at it and finding that lane when he needed it.
They started feeding him after the Tyreek injury. That touchdown
run was one of his best runs of his career.
You know why the defense find that cutback lane, get
skinny and get through that gap. He was really impressive
in that way. I'll do more offensive line stuff tomorrow.
(24:37):
It's hard for me sometimes when a million things going
on in that press box to get o line take
breakdowns for you guys. Defensively, Jack Jones the peanut punch
saves a touchdown. He wasn't called upon a whole lot
because the Jets didn't put the ball up in the
arrow whole lot, but he made it count when he
was I thought the Garrett Wilson OPI was pretty good coverage.
Maybe a little bit soft of a call on that
push off, but he was in good shape there. So
(24:57):
Jack Jones continues to have some nice games here the
Miami Dolphins.
Speaker 1 (25:01):
I think Douglas rasseuls Douglas Rasoulo. Douglas has played nice.
I wrote, Rasoul's sack he had on Justin Fields was
a nice job staying wide and coming after the quarterback
as he broke contain almost got that pick on like
a vintage with Suole Douglas player where he undercut an
inbreaking route and dang near picked that thing off. Jalen
Phillips made the play to begin that t Dot force
(25:21):
fumble on the inside slant rush to get him as
the Green Dog looper and then hustles after the football
for to continue the to get the phumb recovery. I
thought his pass rush like it did last week, it
came alive in the second half of the game as well.
And then Mika Fitzpatrick didn't have a lot of plays
to make, but watching him play from depth and finish
at the catch point and hit guys and his anticipation,
I think that he really patched up some things on
(25:42):
the backside. And if this run defense can figure it out,
I think it'll give him a chance to make some
more plays. Best game for Tyrel Dots in this season.
The sack fumble was his best play as a Miami Dolphin,
and then on the run fits the Jets backed up
on that fourth quarter drive where they fair caught it
for some reason on like the two yard line. Had
a really nice runfit on that play as well. Jordan
Phillips I thought, had.
Speaker 2 (26:03):
Some some nice reps in the second half of the game,
but didn't really start the game so strong. But he
had some good moments in the running game late in
the in the contest. And then Elijah Campbell the release
on the punt that was fair caught the three I
thought was, you know, he kind of got down there
quickly with a good release. And again, want to dig
on the offensive line on the show tomorrow. I think
there was more than met the eye before. I know
(26:23):
that I can get into here, but I think by
and large played pretty well. No sacks, ran the ball
pretty well, and then special teams was just really good
all night long. Roley Patterson tip of the Captain, Rolly Patterson.
Jake Bailey kicked the ball well in this game. Good
job all around on special teams. My standdowns. I thought
Larry Borum got kind of you know on that holding
call that turned the first intentent the plus twenty eight
(26:44):
to a third nineteen to forty eight yard line was
a drive killer which takes points off the board. That's
worth being mentioned here. Jonasavit Andita continues to struggle. We'll
talk more about that on the tape tomorrow, but I
just didn't think it was good for him. Malik Washington.
I think some of those screens that he had and
some of the running plays like there was room to
hit it up inside the crease, and he kept trying
to get on the outside shoulder of an outside leverage block.
(27:06):
So I thought that was kind of strange decision making,
and I think it cost the Dolphins some yards maybe
even some points in this game. Didn't think it was
his best game defensively. Kenneth grant Man, he's playing high
pad level. His pad levels high. Come on, guys, his
pad levels been high. He's kind of getting tossed around
little bit. Zach Seeler continued to get pushed around. He
did make two consecutive TFLs that were like vintage Zach Steeler.
Plays more of that man because it's been tough upfront
(27:28):
for him. I don't think Jordan Phillips go off blocks
the way he has all season long. Bradley Chubb, I
thought had a really really difficult game trying to set
the edge and get pressure off that side chop. Robinson
didn't do a whole lot either. Ashton Davis got caught
in the wash, slipped and fell down and got sucked
into the formation for some reason on a long breeze
Hall run so defensively a long way to go. Takeaways
(27:49):
number one, the stars were the stars, like Tua's placement,
his ball fakes. He just looked the part for us.
His creativity will talk more about him in the final takeaway.
Tyreek Hill. All the explosive plays, the energy he brought
was great, but we're gonna have to figure out life
without Tyreek Hill here coming up. Devon a Chance's touchdown
run was sick. The way he closed that game with
some good running there, Gilian Waddle, the big third down
(28:10):
go ball was awesome. But really, my biggest part of
the first takeaway here is, and this is really I
guess that was kind of a precursory a you know,
before the takeaways Takeaway one is that I really want
to see what his offense is gonna look like in
a post Tyreek Hill. I mean, he goes out and
the next two drives are touchdowns. They score seventeen points
on five drives, after Tyreek leaves the game, and I
(28:32):
think that you're gonna learn kind of where the wins
come from here for the Miami Dolphins is Alfredo Artiego
would say from the three Yards per Carry podcast. But
you know, Tyreek was force fed in the offense, Like
everything structurally about how this offense operates from other systems
and other coaches changed when you brought in Tyreek Hill,
and he became a guy that demanded, you know, ten
targets a game. And I'm not saying you shouldn't because
(28:53):
one hundred and seventy targets. So that guy makes sense.
He was a really, really, really good football player. But
when you don't have as much of a secondary plan
as a passer, you take away targets from a guy
like Jilan Wattle. And I see all the time on
the tape open receivers that we're just not looking towards
because we're trying to get the ball at ten. I
think there could be a net impact from that.
Speaker 1 (29:15):
I watched this.
Speaker 2 (29:16):
Team all all summer long in training camp, and OTAs
throw the ball to waddle and play without Tyreek Hill
and mix it up in the running game, in the
passing game and be effective and be a good looking
operation offensively. From that standpoint, I think you can get
to that. I think you can find more targets for
Waddle from A League Washington, for Nick Westbrook, a Keene,
you can call up Taj Washington. But the part that
(29:39):
I'm most curious about is the ability to possibly insert
an entirely new type of offensive approach with your eligibles
that you have. I mean by that, we know about
Devon a Chan, we know about Jilen Wattle, but how
about Ollie Gordon as the one be which he has
been to Devon a Chan in your inside zone game
and your power game. And how about using Nick Westbrook
a Kinne and some of your big heavy personnel packages
(30:01):
and inserting him into the blocking game in the running game.
How about Darren Waller doing some of that. It's not
the best part of his game, but he's willing and
can't do it. I've seen him do it on Giants
tape in the past. And how about Julian Hill, who
continues to I think, play some of his best balls
in Miami Dolphin Like you have an opportunity here with Waller,
with NWI, with Julian Hill, with all a Gordon with
alec Ingold to be a power running football team, and
(30:23):
you have the offensive line to do it too.
Speaker 1 (30:25):
And you can still.
Speaker 2 (30:26):
Keep your bread and butter, your RPO action, your play action,
your boot action, your crossers.
Speaker 1 (30:31):
Your wattle, your wattle, your wattle, your wattle.
Speaker 2 (30:33):
You can keep all of that in your back pocket.
But I think this team a kin to the twenty
six team Miami Dolphins can play a brand of power
football where they can get big buys in the field.
They can go twelve personnel and run play action off
that personnel and punch you in the mouth and be
a physical team that can be adaptable in terms of
how they want to do things here, and I think
(30:54):
you have an offense that can be more of a
you know, let's throw against coverage and throw the spots
against open coverage and not be like where's ten and
then figure the rest out. I think there's an opportunity
for all of that to take place, and I'm excited
to see what that looks like. Takeaway number two Darren
Waller in one game just adds a different element to
the offense. I mean, we kind of covered it there,
but it makes us deadlier in red zone. It makes
(31:14):
us deadly from those stacks. When you go empty, you
create more matchup issues for Tyrek and Wattle. Now just
waddle on that rub route. But you can just see it.
Darren Waller kind of a factor. Number three. The run
defense has to find a solution that Jack Jones force
football changes the entire complexion of the game.
Speaker 1 (31:31):
And a great play.
Speaker 2 (31:31):
But he was going in and that was going to
be a twelve play touchdown drive with eleven runs, and
the first play of the next drive is a twenty
one yard run. The next drive you got a fumble
because you won enough plays to create a third and long.
So it's disingenuous to say the only reason they were
stopped was because of the fumbles. But if they knock
that first drive in, then they kick a field goal
on the second drive and it's ten to ten. With
(31:53):
how that offense is running the ball down your throat,
it might have been tough to overcome, especially if you
had a couple of drives where you stall out and
the Jets offense could it back with a lead or
a ten to ten game. I mean they ran the
ball in the two minute drill on third medium. It
tells you about yourself, how the opposing team calls their
game against you. Zach Seeler hasn't has not been good,
not as a pass rusher either. Kenneth Grant off to
(32:15):
a slow start, Jordan Phillips struggling in this game, man,
and then the pass rush. If you're setting four guys,
they're not getting anything done. It's been bad upfront. Number four.
The takeaways, I mean you save points on the Jack Jones,
punch out the dots and sack fumble. We talked about
this in the preseason. In the structure of the defense.
They had to find a way to be ballhawks to
make up for maybe some of the personnel shortcomings in
(32:35):
terms of the roster.
Speaker 1 (32:35):
And we saw it tonight. And you can do that,
you can win football games.
Speaker 2 (32:38):
And they did it with effort on Jack Jones and
through scheme on the tyrel dots in play, and then
more effort on the kickoff forced fumble. Number five. That's
the too. We know I have been hard on the
quarterback from Miami. That was the good too. And then
the numbers don't even tell you the whole story. He
was exceptional tonight. Solid ball fakes helped get to all
the bootleg stuff, really good accuracy and process. The ball
to Waller was elite. The throw to Tyreek on the
(33:01):
sidelines that the throw to Wattle did down the field,
just nails all game long. I thought the ball on
third down where he spun out of trouble on the
Will McDonald pass rush to Waddle across his body was
a dot got broken up. Whether it was instructure creating,
you know, that was easily the best tool we've seen
all year. Really nice game from two. He goes seventeen
for twenty five a bucks seventy seven, two touchdowns. I
(33:22):
know it's a low total, but seven point one yards
per attempt. Third and five to Waller for fourteen yards,
third and seven for Tyreek for eight yards, a fourth
and goal touchdown to Waller. That was the first drive alone.
The next drive, third and ten, twenty five yards to Wattle,
Third and eight, ten yards to Reek sets up a
second Waller touchdown. Third and eight in the second half,
Scramble takes a shot, moves to change with his legs.
(33:44):
Just good stuff all around from QB one in this game,
and it helps Miami get their first win of the season.
