Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is Drivetime with Travis wing Fields.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
What is up, Dolphins, and welcome to the Draft Time Podcast.
I am your host, Travis Wingfield, and on today's show,
our fourth consecutive day on the grass and these practices,
I just think.

Speaker 1 (00:24):
They keep getting better.

Speaker 2 (00:25):
We had a day of pressure and heat from the
defense that took it to the offense early on, but
then the offense settles in, finds its rhythm and concludes
the day with some fireworks.

Speaker 1 (00:35):
We'll talk about that battle.

Speaker 2 (00:36):
Plus Zach Wilson with a handful of really quality throws
in this practice. We'll talk about him, Tua and quinn Ewers,
Devon a Chan doing Devon ah Chan things, my orange
jersey player from the day, and the accumulative player from
the first four days of practice. Another plus lots of pluses. Today,
Jack Jones is here. He bought out. We'll talk about
him and Mike Hilton. We'll run some audio and a

(00:57):
heck of a lot more from the Baptist Hell Studios
inside the Baptist Health Training Complex.

Speaker 3 (01:01):
This is.

Speaker 2 (01:04):
The Draft Time Podcast and I am just having the
time of my life through these first four days. I
think in years past practices were more unbalanced. Most days
like you'd have the offense with a big win, the
defense the next day, and the back and forth battle
this year, these chess matches like it kind of makes

(01:24):
me think about this. And this is I guess sort
of conjecture on my part, which is a lot of
this job. You're trying to forecast things you see in
things you think you might get as a result of
those things you see. But I think there's something to
the idea that the confidence of a second year in
the system defensively for the first time since McDaniel has
been here, and then obviously that fourth year of continuity
on the offensive side of the football allows them to

(01:47):
get deeper into the bag and have a better feel
for what types of looks they want to simulate particular
plays against. And this is a conversation I had with
the great Kyle Krabs and the Lockdown Dolphins podcast earlier
this week, and something he was pontificating for a potential
question for Mike McDaniel. This idea that do you manipulate

(02:07):
the way you structure practice or the calls you make
and go tell coach Weaver, like, hey, give us this look,
which is the ideal look that we want for the
rep and maybe that helps you guys decipher like how
to defend when the offense gets you the look they want,
or maybe you call the look that provides the worst
look for us offensively, and we have to find the
answers against a look we don't want, whether it's checking

(02:29):
out of that play staying with that play, I don't
know the answer to that, but I do know that
the story of the day was how the defense came
out swinging with the pressure looks and the exotic looks
and getting after the quarterbacks and bringing different guys from
different spots. No details on that, but they went deep
into the bag, and the offense was able to kind
of weather the storm, settle in and then start to

(02:49):
expose it by the end of the practice. Like if
it were a game, the offense probably had, you know,
three or six points going to the locker room at halftime,
but explode for twenty eight in the second half. And
speaking of things, I pontificate the concept of letting the
cornerback position sort itself out for a week or maybe
two into camp before you go look at the veteran

(03:10):
market or go look for answers elsewhere. Yeah, that kind
of age like milk, because we have one official signing,
and we'll talk more about Jack Jones in just a second.
With a strong first day out here at Dolphins camp.
And then it's being reported that Mike Hilton, the veteran
cornerback we spent all eight years of his career in
the AFC North, will bring his talents to South Beach, which,
by the way, is about a forty five minute drive

(03:32):
from where we actually play our games, so don't call
it South Beach for those that don't frequent South Florida.
Let's go ahead and talk about their games real quick,
and we'll get right back to the practice notes. In fact,
here's what I wrote on these players back when I
was doing my film reviews or deep dives on free
agents way back in the winter. Jack Jones signs and
that's official. He was out here on the field today,

(03:52):
and I think he has a really, really good chance
to win a starting job in Week one, just based
on his tape alone, which, as Travis has learned, there's
always more to it than that. But he's got such
a good feel for zone coverage and playing from off
coverage and then keying the concept and feeling it based
upon how it develops. He's got a good peripheral skill

(04:14):
set to kind of take into account what multiple routes
do at once and how that can inform him on
where to go and where to jump and where to play,
and then keying that concept and kind of you know,
making the play based upon how it develops. I mean,
that's the calling card of this defense. Talk about what
makes this defense go.

Speaker 1 (04:32):
It's that.

Speaker 2 (04:33):
And he's athletic enough to allow them to get flexible
with their man calls. He's got some inside versatility, less
than I thought when I went back and looked at
the numbers, but he can play inverted coverage and get
into the you know, a deep third or a deep half,
and we do that plenty. He was the guy that
I thought made the most sense, and in particularly more
so than Rasul Douglas or even a Sante Samuel Junior,

(04:55):
who I think does fit. But I think that Jack
Jones was the best option because of his skills and
his ability to do multiple things and how he fits
the defense. Now, as for the why was Jack Jones available,
It's pretty simple. He's had some issues away from the field,
and that's why you're able to scoop him up here
on July twenty six. But if he's locked in, if
he's you know, hasn't gotten past that rookie contract yet,
if he views this as his last chance to kind

(05:17):
of make it stick and maximize those abilities and go
find his money, you can have the conversation about what
you do next. But if you get that player motivated here,
that's how you can kind of strike gold on these short,
cheap deals with guys that can come in here and
kind of rehabilitate their career and find success and help
you get to where you want to go as a team,
and then you can revisit the fact afterwards. But that's
why you know he's available, and I think he's a massive,

(05:39):
massive upgrade for us. His playmaking and ball skills are
flat out insane. I posted some clips of him on
social you know, playing off in cover three and basically
having all the routes go to the opposite side of
the field and feeling that backside post and get himself
forty yards down the field, making a play on the football,
jumping a screen route with anticipation and picking that off

(06:00):
and going back to the house.

Speaker 1 (06:01):
And that blowout game against the Chargers a few years back.

Speaker 2 (06:04):
The ball tracking the closing speed doesn't have like exceptional
long speed, but it's better than requisite level a four
to four six guy, so you know, he's got the chops.
And that's probably one of the better forty times in
our entire cornerback room. Quite frankly, I kind of view
this move as like kind of our Kalaeis addition, which
was what last June.

Speaker 1 (06:23):
End of June.

Speaker 2 (06:24):
I think that was in the sense that you were
so terrified of your defensive tackle position at that point
of the offseason, and then Kalais arrives and it's like, okay,
well now we got a six hundred snap guy, and
you know, Kalaeis kind of faded down the stretch, but
he was a very valuable piece of the defense along
with Zach Seeler, and that kind of, you know, provided
you stability in a spot where you were pretty concerned

(06:45):
about it going into the or going into training camp,
and it was fine. I would like to see, you know,
Storm Duck, Isaiah Johnson, the other guy, someone else kind
of step up before I'm all the way to that
position that I just put out there. But I think
Cater and Jack would be a pretty under rated duo.
Provided Caterer get some good news about the injury he
suffered and practice, they will come back and talk more
about that here in just one second. But to put

(07:07):
a bow on Jack Jones here, he played over one
thousand snaps last year. Eight hundred and eighty two of
those were out wide, only about forty five snaps inside
in the slot. I thought there was a little more
inside flexibility than that. But he's really a perimeter cornerback
first and foremost. And then we also have a report
of another addition, which you know he talk about again,
Travis saying that the cornerback position was gonna maybe he

(07:28):
gets played out here and that's a good thing for
the team's overall just approach. And then we go out
and there's, you know, one official signing and now one
reported signing by and it's Mike Hilton, who was a
veteran smart, tough dog mentality. I wrote this about him
back in the in the winter. He was the glue
of the lou Ana Rumo schemes up there with the
Cincinnati Bengals back when it was a championship level defense

(07:51):
in twenty twenty one, and I spoke about that in
the preview, how I thought that Anna Rumo was a
really good option for the Colts as the defensive coordinator
there who the Bengals let go because the Bengals defense
really struggled last year. But I kind of attribute that
to funneling in a bunch of young players and draft
picks that quite frankly didn't work out for the Bengals,
and I thought that that was the benefit of the

(08:12):
Colts to get a coach like Anna Rumo. And I
say all this to tell you that Mike Hilton was
kind of the glue in that defense, especially in those
championship years, but kind of holding things together over the
last couple of years with his durability and his intelligence
and how he's done things to really help kind of
the middle of that defense, which has been a big
focus here in Miami to get stronger down the middle
with Kenneth Grant, with Jordan Phillips, with Matthew Butler, with

(08:35):
the additions of Terrell Dotson last year with kJ Britt,
with Willie Gay, with Mika Fitzpatrick, with Ifi Mela Fund
with Ashton Davis, like the Dolphins have been all in
on building the middle of the defense and trusting that
pressure up front off the edges as well. And that's
kind of where we go here with this because Mike
Hilton's a slot cornerback. It's what he's been his whole career,
and you know, he was able to withstand the changes

(08:57):
in that secondary and kind of still be productive and
including last year when things really came undone on that
back end of the defense. But forty seven hundred career
snaps in the slot, one hundred and thirty nine out wide,
he is a slot He can play some safety as well,
But that's kind of what you've got Mika Fitzpatrick, who's
the converse of that, where he can play, you know, safety,
but also come down and playing the slot. If I

(09:18):
Mela Fond who was a college cornerback converted to safety,
so he's got those flexible chops. You just dropped another smart, tough,
physical dude who's gonna know the defense, going to really
excel on zone coverage and play downhill against the run
and blitz with a feisty mentality. He's been a picture
of consistency going back to his time in Pittsburgh. He
played seven hundred and thirty seven total snaps last year

(09:38):
better than eight hundred and five snaps the previous two
years one thousand. The year before that never went below
like five hundred and ninety four snaps. So a guy
that is durable and plays, you know, every year eight
years of his career, and this really shows you what
kind of player he is. The run stops the last
three years, thirty eight, thirty seven, and thirty four. Those
are tackles within the constitute defensive wins. So you got

(10:02):
them stop short of the goal to gain, to reduce
the yards on first and second downs and converting on
third downs.

Speaker 1 (10:08):
I mean, that's impacting the football game.

Speaker 2 (10:11):
He also has seventy seven quarterback pressures in his career.
He's a big time blitz option inside. We saw Jalen
Ramsey kind of take those inside blitzes last year and
excel with them. There's a clip of him, you know,
someone posted it on Twitter of him talking about blitzing
off the edge against Josh Allen in that playoff game
in the Snow a couple of years ago and saying
I'm going to give him all one hundred and eighty
five pounds that I've got and then they cut to

(10:32):
him running through Allen for a sack in that game.
So the new complexion of the defense, and we're going
to get into the connectivity of the backside here and
just how we saw more examples of that today. But
with Minka being a you know, do everything piece in
the middle, if Emla fan was ability to play the post,
to play split safety, to play in the box, Ashton
Davis being a true post safety trader, and mc morris

(10:55):
being guys and all at John sounders of this list
too after his week of practice so far. Their ability
to kind of spam the middle of the football field,
and then Jack and Hilton can be outside inside specific guys,
Cater can do it all, Duck and Johnson and Cam
probably more outside guys. But the depth and the options
are starting to look a lot like the front seven,
where you've got a big menu of things to choose from.

(11:15):
I was fired up about Jack Jones. That was kind
of that made my morning. We were out shooting a
social media promo for training camp and I saw the
news out there and I was kind of celebrating with
some of the fans and he has himself a heck
of a day. Then I go back inside after practice
and see the report of the Hilton deal, and I'm
just in a pretty good mood about all of that.
So now there is a question with anybody who sign

(11:38):
especially this time of year, and what was it with
Mike Hilton. Only's thirty one years old and there's usually
a decline that comes at a certain age with cornerbacks.
I think you began to see that with Jaylen Ramsey
last year. You saw with Xavier and Howard to a
big time degree, and I think it's probably true of
Mike Hilton. And that's kind of what I read about,
you know, some of the reports of people that covered
him in Cincinnati. But that position in this scheme, I

(12:00):
think you can ask, or rather you can mask a
lot of the athletic regression that you kind of saw
last year from Mike Hilton that naturally happens with age, and.

Speaker 1 (12:08):
Kind of button it up that way.

Speaker 2 (12:09):
Why don't we stay there for the practice notes, in
that defensive backfield. And since yesterday's show was much more
narrative driven, I want to go ahead and unload the
notebook today because we had a ton of reps of
eleven on eleven and let's go ahead and stay in
that defensive backfield. Here one of the first reps. In
one on ones, Tyreek broke a route to the outside
and got some separation on Caterkohu, but he twisted up

(12:30):
and went down and we'll have to find out an
update on the extent of that injury. But he left
practice early and did not return. We'll hear from coach
on Monday, so we'll look forward to the update on
Cater Kohu and what the extent of that injury looks like.
Here coming back after the weekend, and man, he was
off to a great start in camp. His first rep
he strapped up Erica Zuokama in one on ones. I

(12:50):
thought he had been showing the same progression through four
days of camp or three days of camp that we
saw down the stretch last year where he was playing
on the perimeter more so than the slot.

Speaker 1 (13:00):
And I thought that was the best football of his
career so far.

Speaker 2 (13:03):
So again, cross your fingers for Cater We need him
on the football field. Jones might have had the best
day among the defensive backs not named Minka Fitzpatrick. There
was a rep where he was lined up over Tyreek
Tyreek motions you know, back into the formation, and he
becomes stacked with a receiver where you have one receiver
up front, one behind, a very common thing in the NFL.

(13:23):
And he goes inside with reek and then seamlessly passes
off to the inside corner and winds up covering the
outside receiver and just transitions beautifully, stays in phase, and
takes away any type of window that the quarterback could
have had to that receiver. It's a no throw, but
I was watching him intently and there was no window
to throw to, so that was impressive. He also jumped
a pass in one on ones and basically had a

(13:44):
pick but he couldn't squeeze the finish. And he had
a pass breakup on a Quinn you Weres pass later
off script where he showed up with like this cat
like quickness from out of nowhere. That springiness, is that
a word to his game, to his athletic profile, kind
of reminds me of Brent Grot where it was like
this cat like quickness. He tests well in the GPS world,
really smooth mover. I'm excited about Jack Jones. Cornell Armstrong,

(14:08):
another newcomer, also had a pass break up in practice.
I thought it was cool to hear him ask be
asked about what's changed in the eight years since we
last saw you, and he was like a lot of progress,
A lot of work went into that. So cool to
see him, you know, make an NFL career for himself
and come back here. So this defensive backfield is already
kind of turning and burning, right We also had Bja

(14:28):
Adams leave practice with an injury. We lost Lardy Burns
earlier in the week, so that room seems to be
taking on you know, taking it on the chin with
the injuries. Right now, let's go ahead and just hope
for the best with Cater Coohu and Bjay Adams. We
saw two picks today and it could have been three
with a two pick day from Jason Marshall Junior. I
thought he had the first one measured up really nicely

(14:50):
against Quinn Ewers, who tried to thread the needle over
the cornerback under the safety to the corner and Marshall
like had it teed up like he was waiting for it,
licking his chops and he just misstimed his and it
went for a completion of Tarik Black and Marshall looked
like despondent afterwards, like how the hell did I not
pick that pass off, but he would get one later
on on a rep that was far more challenging and

(15:11):
more impressive, where after a pass breakup on one rep,
the very next rep he draws man coverage against quinn
Ewers and I forget the receiver, so forgive me. But
he stays in fade on the takeoff and gets his
head back and locates the football and makes the catch
going to the ground and the sidelines keeps his feet
and bounce, and his coaching staff love that and dapped
him up. I thought the safeties were also in their

(15:31):
bag today. And first I want to play some audio
here from Jalen Waddle, who I asked about the connectivity
on the back end of the defense and how tough
it is or what he's noticed from the receiver position
about how connected this defensive backfield is.

Speaker 4 (15:43):
Definitely, they sended it out saying in the press in
the spring, they look for minute, they know where they
help it. They plan together one R three levels. So
when you have defense plan like that, they're gonna be
very tough.

Speaker 3 (15:58):
To move the ball on.

Speaker 2 (15:59):
And I really tied this into the safeties as today
we saw the ball skills Amenka Fitzpatrick on full display
with the other pick and team Wilson tried a deep shot,
but Minka came off his spot from one side of
the field and just gets on his horse right as
the ball goes airborne, sky's through the air, contorts his
body and pulls this thing down. He also capped off
a deep shot that Tua wanted early on in practice

(16:21):
and stuffed an outside run and fell on a fumble
from Devon Hchan. Minka looks like the real deal man.
I also think John Saunders probably making the most noise
among the undrafted guys for my money, and one of
Emery Hunt's picks to make the team. Back in May,
he was involved in some bang bang plays. Yesterday today
he broke up a fifty to fifty ball against Tarik Black,
who was very involved in the offense. And I thought

(16:43):
there was a big height discrepancy there, but I look
him up on the roster six' three versus six to,
two so he's a big. Dude goes up and knocks
that thing away and then comes off the pile with
this real primal you, know, ah like you, know you
know how guys get one of those big. Yells he
is bringing the juice so far through a few days of.
Press let's go ahead and conclude this segment with some
sound here From Storm. DUCK i asked a similar question

(17:04):
to him AS i did To waddle there about how
the defense being multiple upfront and being able to get
pressure from multiple guys with different fronts and, looks how
that helps you guys on the back end in the defensive.

Speaker 3 (17:14):
Backfield, YEAH i mean it makes it a lot. EASIER
i mean as A. DV i, mean if the front
gets there, faster the less we have to. Cover you,
know the front doesn't get, there the more we have to.
Cover SO i, think you, know it works that. Way
but you, know it's always good to you, know have
a great d line to you, know get to the,
quarterback get the ball out. Quick you, know you make more.
Plays BUT i mean if even if they, don't we
still got to do our job and.

Speaker 2 (17:35):
Cover let's take a break right, there come back on
the other. SIDE i have more sound From Nick Westbrook
akine as well As Jalen. Waddle that's all Next Draft time,
podcast brought to you By Auto.

Speaker 1 (17:44):
Nation yeah it was.

Speaker 5 (17:48):
GOOD i feel like there's some give and. Take there
were some some opportunities there where you, know we had
to get the ball out hot and we. Executed there's
gonna be, times you, know when they get, us and
they get us with their, Disguise SO i feel like
it was a good back and.

Speaker 2 (17:59):
Forth apologize for the level of those. Audio it's as
high AS i can get it. Here it's a little
bit quieter sometimes to certain guys in certain spots in
the press, Conferences SO i apologize for. That but that
Was Nick, Westbrook Akine dolphins wide, receiver talking about the
ebbs and flows of practice and the assessment of the
defense's early success with their, pressure but also how the
offense settled in and found their, rhythm and it was

(18:21):
more of the same with the stars on. OFFENSE i,
Mean tua had a couple misses early AND i was, like,
man fans back in the stands, here and he missed
a couple throws like in one on ones and didn't
really get the offense going the first period.

Speaker 1 (18:33):
Or, two and it was just like.

Speaker 2 (18:34):
That that kind of stinks to, see AND i know
it's not a big, deal but just for the perception
of the fans out, there it was a. Bummer but
then then it turned around and he was ripping things
like he usually, does and there Was he had a
twenty twenty five yard rip To waddle to kick things.
Off he was letting things develop when he had, time
letting it fly when it was, hot moving around a little.
Bit he found devon Ah chan quite frequently when he

(18:57):
had to get the ball out against all this pressure
and all the quick you know guys in his face
that he saw throughout the.

Speaker 1 (19:02):
Day just to go through some of his best.

Speaker 2 (19:03):
Plays he had a touchdown To Andrew armstrong and Aj
henning in the one on one portion of, practice which
that's kind of tilted towards the, offense but it's still
worth getting in the. Notes had a twelve yard hit
To waddle on a little boot action that was a
good little throw on the. Run a twenty yard throw
down the middle on a timing throw To. Wattle he
also Found wattle hot with an overload pressure for a
short catch and run, opportunity which you Know waddle can

(19:24):
make those turn into big. Plays he has sixty yard
touchdown The tyreek hill with a nice clean pocket off play,
pass uncorksit Over Ashton davis And Storm duck for the long.
Score also had a couple of quick hitters To tyreek
for conversions and short yardage and hot, routes and then
he came back with a twenty five yard play To,
wattle who had some room after the catch as. Well
So wattle eight, today mostly off Of. Tua he had

(19:45):
some early incompletions where the defense was just swarming, everything
but finished with another good. DAY i also Thought Zach
wilson had his best practices In Miami dolphin and probably
the best practice A dolphins backup quarterback has had Since
i've and. HERE i remember saying that About Mike white
during the twenty three off. Season he had a kind

(20:07):
of rough start of camp and then came back with
a really big, day and it was, like, oh that
was the PROCESSING i saw on tape that maybe think
it could be a fit in the. System and it
didn't quite work out For Mike white here, obviously but
that was the best Day i've seen by a backup
quarterback probably since twenty twenty When tool was here as
the backup To Ryan. Fitzpatrick But zach threw with, confidence
tons of. Zip at one POINT i was, like, man

(20:27):
that ball was jumping off his hands And kyle's, like,
yeah he was a second pick in the draft for a, reason,
right yeah he, was and he's playing better on time
every single. DAY i think With, zach and this is
sort of the gunslinger, experience Right like for, him it's
about ironing out the floor and raising that because he
did have the one pick he should have been picked
off a different time in, practice that's kind of been
the Bugaboos. Zach so far in practices there's a bunch

(20:48):
of like high variance, explosives but match with these turnover
worthy plays and if he can iron those out and
kind of raise the, FLOOR i think we'd be in
really good shape behind. Two AND i already think we
are better than it has been in the. PAST i
thought Quinn ewers had some moments not as good as,
yesterday but like most of the, roster the quarterback room
is just deeper than it has been in years. Past and,

(21:09):
truthfully getting those showings from your quarterbacks on a day
like this where they would have had a lot of
good veteran quarterbacks heads, swimming in my, Opinion and this
is just day four of, camp AND i honestly felt
like a Mid august practice something you might see in joint.
Practices let's go ahead and run a clip here From Jalen,
waddle our last sound by of the, day talking about

(21:31):
the defense and the pressure they bring and how valuable
that has been for the.

Speaker 4 (21:34):
OFFENSE i think we did good, defense did a good
job disguising sitting blade send them where we wasn't able
to pick up. SOMETIMES i think we know learned early in.
Camp defense looked real good, Man so kudos. Today, Man
you're just gonna try to get better and go from.

Speaker 2 (21:51):
There and like Like i'm not gonna give away secrets
here on the, Show but there was so much variety
that we've has at his disposal with the edges and the,
tackles and they're flexibility who can play multiple positions and
the linebackers that have these diverse skill, sets and the
safeties who can you, know have so much slot box
corner flexibility among, them but more so. Upfront it just
allows anybody to walk, up you, know mug up and

(22:13):
rush or back out and, coverage to stack your, rushers
to go with amba, fronts to flip the tackles with the,
edges like you, KNOW i saw a stealer have a
win outside today as like a heavy end which was not.
New he did, that you, know against The seahawks last,
year AND i Saw, phillips which is also not, new
have a win from the inside, position and that just
presents a ton of problems for your protection scheme when
you don't know where guys are gonna line up and

(22:35):
then where they're going to go after the. Snap so
What i'm kind of hoping was the case was the
offense maybe not being privy to how this plan might work,
out or the fact that they were going to see
these pressures and overloads and, different you, know exotic looks
like you would get in a, game and like you
didn't game plan for that because it's new on. Tape
then you adjust and find the. Answers And i'm just
pondering if that's how it went. Down but if it,

(22:56):
was then what a great day of work it. Was
and it was a great day either, Way but it
inspires a lot of confidence about how the team could.
Adjust if that is in fact how it played, OUT
i know that we were in for some good. Stuff
When Minka fitzpatrick came over and Joined Chop, Robinson Bradley,
chubb And Jalen phillips with the boxing gloves and the
handswipe drill and, individuals And minka's a dynamic. Blitzer and

(23:18):
That's Mike hilton's game. TOO i showed you all the
clip on social Of Jack jones playing up in the
box and jumping the screen for a pick.

Speaker 1 (23:24):
Six i'm excited about the. Possibilities.

Speaker 2 (23:27):
Man let's go ahead and stay up front here and
flip it back over to the offensive or to the defensive,
side or before we go back to the offensive, SIDE
i should Say Jordan brooks is going to get an
orange jersey here sooner than. Later i'm guessing next week.
Sometime because you guys remember How Peyton manning would complain
That Zach thomas was so annoying to play against because
like all the prep work That peyton that Made peyton,

(23:49):
Special zach was like right there with. Him so he
would just negate that by calling out all the, colts you,
know formations and shifts and changes and their tails that
they would put on. Tape that's What Jordan brooks was
doing today certain. Extent he was running off the angles
Before achan could get. There he was banging inside with
physicality and the way That Tyrrel dotson plays off of.
Him we talk, about you, know backers scraping off defensive

(24:11):
linemen all the, time and that's where you stack up
a block and the linebacker has to stay tight to
that block to kind of fit the gap and then
go hit the run because otherwise he might get picked
off by a different, blocker or you create some daylight
for the running back to cut inside of. You they
almost do that together as linebackers on outside runs Where
brooks can go crash the tight end first and kind
of take him out of the, play and then here

(24:32):
comes T dot from the weak side further, away scraping
off of that, collision getting over the top and beating
the ball carry to the spot on the outside, run
and the way that they can scrape over the top
and force those, cutbacks you often See Zach, Seeler Kenneth,
Grant Jordan, Phillips Benito jones find their way through the
backside to cut that. DOWN i Saw minka in there
one time as the backside cut back.

Speaker 1 (24:54):
Lane.

Speaker 2 (24:54):
Phil it just reminds me Of weaver's comments back in the.
Spring you, know whoever is out, there if we play
connected and, together we're gonna play good. Defense and that
just tells me the coach is confident in his scheme
and if you do what it's designed to, do we'll be.
Okay AND i saw a ton of buy in from.
Guys guys believe in Coach. Weaver they're bought into his.
Scheme there's no egos to worry about this, year and

(25:15):
they're just playing for each. Other it's a treat to.
Watch Channing tindall has had a nice. Camp he had
a couple more, tackles including a tag OFF. TfL Eugena,
sante the very fun energetic rookie From, auburn had one as.
Well kJ britt had a couple of. Plays he's another
guy THAT i just enjoy. Watching there's an early down
bas guy that he keys it so well and goes
with bad intentions to knock your teeth. In he reminds

(25:37):
me so much of A Landon roberts in his play.
Style Willie gay is in the running from my cumulative orange.
Jersey of the first four, days he broke up a
two a pass by elevating the line of scrimmage and
getting that thing knocked. Down he has made a play
in coverage every single day in. Camp he also buzzed
a throw to a deep out From Zach wilson that
he got in the way of that and disrupted. It
his range is really quite absurd outside excuse, Me Jalian

(26:01):
phillips is so gosh darn good at taking on, blocks
keeping the outside shoulder, clean and funneling things back. Downhill
he had another one of those reps where he won
with strain and sniffed it out to the outside and
just won with pure effort and. Physicality Chop pad what
would have been his fourth sack in as many, days
one per, day with a would be crushing blind side
hit On Zach. Wilson that kind of shut the play,

(26:23):
down But zach continued it and then threw the pick
To Minka. Fitzpatrick but one sack every single day For,
chopp and he got one On Larry. Borum here, Today
Grayson murphy had a would be sack where he got
upfield and took the short corner to the. Backfield AND
i want to talk About Bradley. Chubb let's go ahead
and into the defensive tackles, first Because chubb helps me
transition to the offensive. Line sealer was. Dominant that's probably

(26:43):
not any news to. You he was back dooring guys
in the front. Side he Hit Patrick paul with that
patented swim move from a heavy end position like That
seattle game last. Year he won with. Power he is
just the freaking. Man Kenneth grant was. Disruptive he's gotten
better every. Day in my, Opinion Jordan phillips makes up
every single.

Speaker 1 (27:00):
Day he had a.

Speaker 2 (27:01):
Repper he Shocked Addison west with a punching the chess
play and then disengaging at the hole to make a
stop On Olie. GORDON i have so much faith in
those two rookies Alongside, zach along With Benito jones who
also had a sack today early in practice with a
first step quick move inside Of Andrew. Meyer and Then
Ben stilly had a nice backside contained on a quarterback
pressure on a bootleg. Play and we'll conclude with the

(27:24):
defense with my comment About Bradley chubb because at parlays
back into the offensive. Line we'll do that next on
the other. Side Draft Time podcast brought to you By Auto.
Nation So Bradley chubb is in the running for the
Accumulative orange jersey through four, days And i'll get to
that here at the. End BUT i think today was

(27:44):
his most, challenging and not by any fault of. HIS
i just thought That Patrick paul battle with him was.
Awesome there was a repper Eight chan won the corner
and the only reason he did was Because Patrick paul
got his hands to the chess plate turned him inside
And chubb tried to disengage and just couldn't do.

Speaker 1 (27:59):
It he kind of got swallowed up.

Speaker 2 (28:01):
There and that's the kind of Rep i've talked about
That Chris greer talked. About And i'm parlaying off Of
chris's work, here but when he refines that, technique coming
from college where he was a little bit more raw
with his physical, skills he's going to be a. Problem
and we saw that on a handful of reps today
and really quite frankly throughout the course of training camp so. Far,
NOW i think when you give the line all this
praise earlier throughout the course of the, week and you,

(28:23):
know talk about the defense and making the plays that
they had With seeler And cage and all the, BOYS
i thought they got the better Of James daniels And
jonas Ofvit naya And Andrew meyer And Keon smith today
and that's. Good we want to trade wins, there but,
man staying on the offensive, line you talk about playmakers
at the tackle. Position you want to keep expectations for
a first year starter to a. Minimum But, BUDDY i

(28:45):
am so damn confident In Patrick. Paul and he was
confident in himself and the way he spoke at the
press confidence of the. Day i've just seen the good
stuff on tape from last year carry over in the
best way, imaginable and he's getting better and he's so
just in his bag in terms of how to approach this.

Speaker 1 (28:59):
STUFF i have a lot of confidence In Patrick paul this.

Speaker 2 (29:02):
Year and you're probably asking, yourself where did the run
game success come? From if you're talking about all these
wins from the. Defense, well there was a lot of
short runs runs for no, game but there was plenty
of explosives, too which is kind of how you want
to go. RIGHT i Think Alexander madison had his best
day with some really smooth cuts and some backside. Vision
he hit what could have been construders a long touchdown
run early in. Practice he had some big runs later

(29:22):
on as. Well he caught a massive block around the
edge From Pharaoh, brown who got up and did that
third base coach wave and LIKE i just made that key,
Block let's go ahead and get this thing in the end.

Speaker 1 (29:30):
Zone Tanner connor.

Speaker 2 (29:32):
Also had the other best block by a tight end
going around the other side on the offense on a
play where H chan one with speed to Beat chubb
And brooks to the edge and Then connor blocked the
cornerback out of the play and that's Where hchan took
off for the. Explosive But madison was. Awesome Ah chan
continues to really flourish also in the oranger as he
was To. Bond H chan And Nate nol had some
nice runs in this practice. Too that leaves us with

(29:54):
the wide. Receivers waddell is catching everything and it's mostly
been that twenty twenty five five yard range akin to
his twenty twenty two season where he'd make those, catches
neither get down or find someone after the catch and
average what was it like nineteen yards per catch that.
Season and then we ended practice with three consecutive. Explosives
The monterey ball went. TOUCHDOWN i thought was the best
ball by quinn ewers and one of the better balls

(30:16):
by quarterbacks on the, day and it was a cool
route concept where they kind of ran like a double
move and they Gave Cam smith and this off position
a route underneath to kind of lure his eyes. Downhill
and he took That cheese And. Quinn as he goes
to throw the deep, Ball cam drops down and it
goes over the top To Mono rae ball went for
a sixty yard. Touchdown and, yeah that was the first
of the. Explosives and Then tua came in and Hit

(30:38):
tyreek for the sixty yard. Touchdown then A chan had
a long run and then it goes back To wantle
for twenty five yards or. So so like the last
four plays was like boom, boom, boom explosive after. Another
Tyreek hill had some really nice, plays more notably as
a hot in the short, game which is a, hey
we got to have an answer. There and if It's
Tyreek hill doing, that if they're gonna play off and
give him the short, space we'll take. It he also

(30:58):
had an explosive plays a ball. CARRIER i Thought Tarik
black made a case for himself today with a handful of.
Plays he has some intriguing size and leaping, ability and
he's been here for a couple of years, now so
keeping an eye on. Him let's go ahead and wrap
it up with a couple of things. Here My Monday
Orange jersey, prediction WHICH i. WAS i talked about the
run game Of devon A chian, yesterday BUT i was

(31:18):
going more towards the offensive. Lineman he won it. Today
i'm STILL oh for four, though or oh for, THREE i.
Guess so For, Monday i'm Taking Jordan brooks as my top.
Guy Minka fitzpatrick is number, Two Zach steeler's number, Three
Jalen wattle number, four And Patrick paul number. FIVE i
gotta pick more guys BECAUSE i gotta get this thing
right eventually my Cumulative Orange. Jersey there's so many choices.

(31:40):
HERE i Think Jordan brooks is probably. Tops Willie gay
might be. Next with two, Linebackers Jalen WADDELL i think
is in, There devon A chan's in, there AND i
would go with TWO a tongue My. Lowa that's my
five for the best practice performances four days in top
five guys. There, also we had our first practice fan

(32:00):
of the. Day the Legendary big e Ien berger brings
the first one. Home he is voted for by the
fans there on the stands us all over our social,
channels so you can go find out more about that
there and you can put your name into the hat

see the fans, back a good buzz in the, building

(32:21):
